Rare female magician to take stage.
Scarlett will spice show at V Theater on Strip with dancing, characters.
By: Jerry Fink/Ls Vegas Sun

Female magicians still form an exclusive club.

Even in the age of gender enlightenment and equal opportunity, men dominate the world of illusion.

A few women have broken the magic barrier: Luna Shimada of Australia, Ava Do of Vietnam and Arian Black, a Canadian who has lived in Las Vegas for several years.

“I feel there’s some bias against women in the business,” says Scarlett, a 22-year-old, one-named magician who’s about to debut on the Strip. “But I’ve been lucky. Everyone I’ve spoken to has been very receptive, although I feel a lot of established magicians like the male dominance of it.”

Scarlett, Princess of Magic, opens Friday at the V Theater inside the Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood. She replaces magician Nathan Burton, who recently moved his show to the Flamingo.

Vegas paper drops sections, not jobs.
R-J’s move to cut costs follows price hike. By: Sam Skolnik/Las Vegas Sun

Having just raised the newsstand price for weekday and Saturday editions by 50 percent, the Las Vegas Review-Journal announced Monday it has eliminated sections of the paper as a cost-cutting measure.

On July 1, the non-Sunday rack cost of the Review-Journal rose to 75 cents.

Beginning this week, the Review-Journal will stop publishing Living, its lifestyle and entertainment section, Mondays and Tuesdays.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Saying so long to Second City.

If you go all the way back to the very first press conference, The Second City turned out to be a promise unfulfilled.

Oh, don't get me wrong. The sketch comedy revue delivered everything from an Afghanistan version of "Dirty Dancing" to a hip-hop instructional on office politics, and it's one of my favorite shows on the Strip. It has been — albeit some years more than others — ever since it opened in a converted Flamingo Las Vegas lounge in March 2001.

The show closes there Friday. A return is likely but never guaranteed, so anyone who wants Las Vegas entertainment to be more than eye candy should get there this week for a quality send-off.

Chip Lightman, producer for the Donny and Marie Osmond show coming to the Flamingo Las Vegas on Sept. 9, says the duo already have sold about $850,000 in pre-sales, or about 8,500 seats at an average ticket price of $100. That sort of flies in the face of the Sin City, adult-Disneyland thing, doesn't it?

The venerable afternoon revue "Viva Las Vegas," is taking the rest of the summer off and returns Sept. 15.

No surprise, but "Wizard: The Musical Journey of Oz Composer Harold Arlen" packed it in early at the Greek Isles. It closed July 13 after two weeks, short of even its modest goal of a limited-run showcase. Though worthy in the right context, the revue was more suited for off-Strip locals than for the tourist zone in a tough summer.

Sunday's Las Vegas Review-Journal described a series of renovations going on over at the Riviera. Since Riviera brass are usually pretty close-lipped, the piece made for interesting reading, detailing a $17 million upgrade that will include adding WiFi capability and iPod docks to Riviera guest rooms. President Robert Vannucci says the Riv is not for sale for the time being and reiterated his faith in a business model that sees 60% of the room inventory set aside for conventioneers.
A news report has Eva Longoria and Victoria Beckham joining forces to open Beso II, an offshoot of Longoria's L.A. restaurant, to Las Vegas, featuring cuisine by Todd English. The oddball news item states that the former Posh Spice and the current "Desperate Housewives" star were lured to the casino capital "due to their interest in dominoes" (surely they mean pai gow?) and hope to open a mini-casino within their restaurant. Bar-top video poker is old news around here, but dealing up '21' in a restaurant? That'd be a stretch, to put it mildly.
Via Veneto at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino is now closed. In its place Salvatore’s Italian Steakhouse will open Aug. 4, 2008.
A wild rumor that comedy magician Amazing Johnathan had suffered a stroke turned out to be unfounded. The rumor started after the headliner fainted over the weekend from either a diabetic condition or inner ear problem, he told friends.
Two big grand openings are set for September at The Palazzo. Lavo, a sister operation to Tao Las Vegas, has a Sept. 13 opening extravaganza for the Moroccan-themed, bilevel dining and dance nightspot. The 300-seat restaurant, with a menu borrowing from Spanish, French and Italian cuisine, features a patio overlooking the Strip. Sushi Samba, already open and boasting a fusion menu that blends "fiery Brazilian, zesty Peruvian and fresh Japanese culinary influences," has a Sept. 19-20 grand opening. Co-owner Matt Johnson is hinting that a major Brazilian supermodel will be part of the debut weekend. The Sugarcane lounge at Sushi Samba opens Aug. 15.
REDESIGN OF FLAMINGO GUEST ROOMS: County checks Harrah's for safety.

Electrician filed complaint that triggered investigation.
By JOAN WHITELY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The county has launched a probe into whether Harrah's Entertainment broke safety laws when it did an award-winning redesign of guest rooms at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

The investigation comes just before the Harrah's parent corporation and two hotel employees head to court in late August on misdemeanor charges of breaking safety laws at several other properties in the same group.

"Remodeling of (all Flamingo guest) towers … exceeded the scope of permits issued," according to a copy of a complaint filed with the county July 16, which triggered the present investigation.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards BY Rick Garman

The Guaranteed Playground Taunting Award goes to Celestial, the name bestowed on a newborn that would make for some really tough recesses… if the name had been given to a human. Instead, Celestial is the new official name of one of two white tiger cubs now in residence at the Secret Garden of Siegfried and Roy at The Mirage. The other cub’s name is Star. Both were chosen from submissions sent in by school children.

The Foodie Award of the Week goes to all of the epicureans who are practically giddy over the leaked news that chef Theo Schoenegger is coming to Las Vegas. I know… most of you are going, “Who?” Schoenegger was the chef at Patina, a famed restaurant in Los Angeles that received more glowing reviews and awards than they knew what to do with, so I guess it is a big deal. The Italian with California influences eatery will open at Encore sometime next year.

The Bad Timing of the Year Award goes to South Point, which just opened their new 800 room tower right at a time when the economy and fuel prices are really smacking the local’s market hard. Granted, when they started building the place things were just fine, but this really isn’t a good period to be adding inventory. Good luck with that.

The Hopefully Things Will Be Better in 2011 Award goes to Durango Station, the next local’s joing from the Station Casinos empire. It’ll be located on the far southwest side of town near Interstate 215 at Durango Road and will feature 201 rooms, a casino, restaurants and entertainment, a movie theater, and a big outdoor shopping complex not unlike the one next to their Green Valley Ranch project. Construction should begin next year.

Casino Cage Match: Bally's vs. The Golden Nugget
By: Rick Garman/www.vegas4visitors.com

So far in the Casino Cage Match series I've been comparing hotels on The Strip - Mirage vs. TI, Palazzo vs. Planet Hollywood, and Bellagio vs. Wynn Las Vegas. But I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen when we looked at what comes down to a battle between The Strip and Downtown.

You may be thinking this a no-brainer - that The Strip will win every time, but hold on there, Bucky, it might not be that easy. Downtown may not offer the breadth and depth of exciting restaurant, nightclub, and entertainment options that The Strip does, but there are undeniable benefits to staying in the area such as cost and friendliness of service.

In picking which hotels to pit against each other as the representatives for their respective areas, I tried to come up with two that could compete effectively. Putting someplace like Bellagio against Fitzgerald's wouldn't be a fair fight and likewise, putting a very nice Downtown hotel against the low-end places on The Strip that are in a similar price range (like The Riviera, Tropicana, or Imperial Palace) wouldn't be effective either.

So I picked one of the nicest hotels in Downtown - The Golden Nugget and put it against Bally's, a nice but not excessively nice hotel on The Strip that isn't too expensive. Seems like it could be a fair fight. Let's see:

Location
This is a new category for the Casino Cage Match since all of the other hotels previously pitted had been on The Strip.

Obviously Bally's has the better location since it's not only on The Strip but right in the middle of it so it's within walking distance to most of the stuff most visitors will want to see and do.

The Golden Nugget has a great Downtown location - right on The Fremont Street Experience and just steps away from a dozen other casinos. But the bottom line is that it is Downtown and therefore not quite as attractive from a location perspective.

The clear winner here is Bally's.

Parking and Access
Bally's doesn't actually have their own parking garage anymore - you have to park next door at Paris Las Vegas and then start an almost epic journey to get to the front desk of Bally's. After negotiating the parking structure, you have to go down an elevator, take a long walkway to the back of Paris, go down an escalator, navigate through a shopping and restaurant area, then cross the Bally's casino. The whole thing is kind of silly.

The Golden Nugget, meanwhile has a parking garage that isn't even attached to the hotel. You have to cross the street then traverse a longish hallway to get to the front desk. Being outside when it's 110 or when it's raining or blustery and chilly isn't fun, but it's basically just crossing a street and the hallway isn't anywhere near as long a walk as the one at Bally's.

The winner in this category is The Golden Nugget.

Checking In
Both Bally's and The Golden Nugget have the much preferred single-line check in, where guests get into a roped off queue and then get the next available agent. This is so much better than the alternative where each agent has their own line and you have to try to figure out which one is going to move faster.

So since they are equal in that regard, we have to go to the surroundings. The Golden Nugget lobby is small and because of its location has a lot of cross traffic that can make it difficult to navigate.

Bally's lobby area is less a lobby than a side of the room with a long check-in desk. It too acts as a glorified hallway but since it's bigger than the Golden Nugget area it becomes less of an issue.

Gotta throw this one to Bally's.

Getting To Your Room
At the Golden Nugget, your walk to your room will depend on which tower you are staying in. The North Tower elevators are literally steps from the lobby whereas the South Tower elevators are a little further away but down an unobstructed hallway. No lively jaunt through the casino while loaded down with luggage here.

Bally's has a straight shot to their guest elevators but you do have to walk through the casino to get there.

Golden Nugget wins this one by a mile.

Rooms
For this category, the experience depends on which type of room you are booking.

At the Golden Nugget, the North Tower rooms have been recently updated to feature 42 inch plasma television, nice furnishings, and the kind of clean/crisp decor that is all the rage these days. The older South Tower rooms will be getting a similar treatment eventually but for now the look is a little more florally dated.

Bally's "classic" guest rooms also have some older and simpler furnishings while their "deluxe" rooms feature more stylish appointments throughout.

The size between the two hotels is about the same as is the list of standard amenities.

This is a tough call since there are a lot of variables here but if I'm being honest, I have to go with the new North Tower rooms at the Golden Nugget over all the other options.

Casino
Both casinos have some positives and negatives.

The Bally's casino is bigger, brighter, and much more navigable. The spacing between the machines and tables is great and it's a comfortable place to play. The problem here is that it's a really boring room - totally forgettable.

The Golden Nugget casino, on the other hand, is a gorgeous space after a recent multi-million dollar facelift. All golden browns, with luxurious fabrics and wood treatments, the meandering space is a stunner.

But they cram a lot into their very small area so personal space is at a minimum here especially during busy times. The low ceiling and tight quarters put the claustrophobia factor off the charts.

This in combination with the fact that I have won more and more often at Bally's makes me give this category to The Strip hotel.

Service and Amenities
I was expecting that Bally's would win this category in a walk. It's a bigger hotel so you'd think it would have more to offer but it really doesn't.

The Golden Nugget has six restaurants plus a buffet and several bars, lounges, and a nightclub all of which are cheaper (in general) than comparable restaurants on The Strip. There's also a nice pool area, a spa, and a showroom to complete the offerings.

Bally's has eight restaurants but several of them are little more than food court style eateries and they no longer have a buffet. They also have a spa, a shopping arcade, and a showroom, but their pool area is not that exciting although they do have tennis courts so that's a plus.

The benefit for Bally's is that it is located so close to so many other exciting food and entertainment options but we have to look at this in terms of what is offered inside the building so The Golden Nugget, despite offering a little less, feels like it is offering much more.

Add in the fact that the service from the front desk to the dealers in the casino is much more down home friendly at The Golden Nugget and I have to award this category to the Downtown representative.

Cost
Although Bally's has room rates that can go as low as $99, the Golden Nugget goes even lower than that and more often. This one is an easy call to The Golden Nugget.

The Decision
It was a tough fight and some of the calls were very close but by winning 5 of the 8 categories listed above, the victor in this Casino Cage Match is The Golden Nugget.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values: August 2008

1. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 Hours - $6.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island is the best-value meal deal in a city full of good-value meal deals. It’s a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, which comes with salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and fresh microbrewed beer, all for $6.95. You can’t beat that with a stick.

2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-2 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate shrimp cocktail went up a buck last April after more than 15 years at 99¢? The one that shocked the bargain-city faithful to their collective core? The one whose 100% increase should’ve been enough to drop it entirely from consideration? That shrimp cocktail? Well, there’s more to this than meets the eye. First, all you have to do is show a players club card to get the shrimp at the old price. Sure, the extra step (if you’re not already a member) might’ve docked the deal a few spots, but a coupla sign-up bennies mitigate the five-minute inconvenience. More important, the shrimp are bigger and better.

3. Breakfast Special - Wild Wild West - 24 Hours - $1.49
The $1.49 breakfast special at Wild Wild West is the same one we’ve been touting for the past several months that’s also served at Wildfire, Gold Rush, and Magic Star. However, now it’s available 24 hours at WWW, as opposed to just midnight to 11 am at the others.

4. Sign-Up Promotion - Hooters - Daily - Free
The power of the Hooters players club sign-up is in the free tickets for the Bobby Slayton show, although some other goodies come with the deal.

5. Happy Hour - Blue Martini - 4-8pm - 50% off
New this month is a non-casino happy hour at Town Square’s Blue Martini. Of the many good HHs around town, this one stands out with 50% pricing on fantastic food and drinks for four hours every evening. Plus, the happy hour has become a sizzling social event that attracts lots of Las Vegas locals. It’s the perfect excuse to head down to Town Square, which continues to develop into a dining, shopping, and entertainment force.

6. Magic Show - Greek Isles - Nightly - $2-$19.95
Get the free tickets to The World’s Greatest Magic Show by calling the box office the day of the show and requesting them. We’ve heard that the allotment of freebies has been reduced from 100 to 50, but you should be able to secure them (up to four) by calling 702/734-0711 and leaving your name at the box office for pick-up that evening. There’s a $2 “printing” charge, but otherwise this good show is totally free.

7. Buffet - Mirage - Daily - $13.95-$24.95
The Mirage Cravings buffet is convenient at center Strip, has better hours than most (opening for dinner at 3 pm), and features an expansive choice of gourmet offerings. Tour the large selection first to take in the variety: a half-dozen soups; dim sum, sushi, Chinese appetizers, and salads at the Asian station; antipasto bar; barbecue station; bagel fixin’s; made-to-order salads, extensive desserts; and more. The Mirage is the best-value gourmet superbuffet, with the highest quality and lowest prices, among Las Vegas’ best spreads.

8. Fontana Bar - Bellagio - Daily - $6
The $6 charge at the Fontana Lounge is the cost of a beer to satisfy the one-drink minimum and see the show in Las Vegas’ classiest lounge.

9. Hot Dog - South Point - 11 am-5 pm - 75¢
Removed from the Top Ten is the Tropicana’s “Comedy Stop,” which implemented a surprising $2 price increase after years of standing pat and at a time when most prices in town are going in the opposite direction. (What can we say? The “Comedy Stop” is independent, but it’s still the Trop.) Taking its place is the hot dog sold from the sports book cart at South Point. It’s just 75¢ for an all-beef Vienna, with kraut and onions added at no extra charge. The same deal is available in the Suncoast sports book, but South Point is more easily accessible, and you can check out the casino’s new tower.

10. Lunch Comp - Crown & Anchor - 8 am-2:30 pm - $20 buy-in
The hours of the lunch comp at the Crown & Anchor appear to have been extended; we’re now told they’re 8 am to 2:30 pm. However, these times seem to jump around and are anything but etched in stone. If you show up anytime between early breakfast and late lunch and ask for the comp, you’ll likely be accommodated. Play a $20 bill through a machine and get your drinks and any menu item for free. You can’t lose, even when you lose.

There are six 30-inch coffee table-like size surfaces providing guests with a distinctly personalized and engaging social experience. There is an innovated suite of custom applications from games such as High Roller bowling, multiplayer pickup pinball, and Last Call musical memory game to a program for creating and ordering your own signature cocktail. Sushisamba Strip at the Palazzo is open on the retail level of The Shoppes at The Palazzo. Sushibamba Strip is the group's first location on the West Coast, the seventh in the group, and largest location at 14,000 square feet.

The restaurant offers a dining room that seats 150 people, a 21-person sushi bar and a main bar accommodating 35 customers. Eclectic dinner menus are being offered now and Sunday brunch and lunch are expected to begin later this year. Another first for the Las Vegas location is Sushibamba's distinctive robata grill that complements the restaurant's extensive menu of classic Japanese tempura, Brazilian churrasco and feijoada and Peruvian anticuchos, or marinated skewered meats roasted over an open fire.

Patrons are greeted by an architectural glass facade, while 16-foot ceilings create a soaring atrium and a Carnavale-inspired environment. The area is anchored by an oversized art installation, and a robata station encased in semi-transparent Frit glass to offer a glimpse of the grill. Projections move continuously throughout the space on scrims and walls, with visuals of Japan, Brazil and Peru. A dark corridor leads guests to the Sugarcane Lounge.

In early August, Sugarcane Lounge, the first extension of Sushisamba's New York boutique nightclub concept will open. The lounge will open and provide an additional 174 seats and a VIP section seating 20 people. Sugarcane Lounge will offer a stage, dance floor and D.J. booth, as well as d‚cor elements such as gold and brown leather, bamboo, and a custom-made, simulated "sugarcane" ceiling fabricated of mixed materials such as glass, acrylic, resin, paper, wood and metal tubes.

10 ways casinos keep you at your game, and what you can do to keep temptation to a minimum.

By Frank Legato from CASINO PLAYER magazine.

When it comes to gambling, the goals of the player and the casino are, naturally, diametrically opposed. At the most basic level, the player wants to walk away a winner, and the casino wants to rake in as much money as possible from the player’s losses.

But when you examine the nature of the casino business more closely, several other levels emerge. Sure, the player wants to walk away a winner, but beyond that, the player is seeking entertainment. To many players, getting a fair dose of entertainment for the gambling dollar is at least as important as the prospect of winning money, maybe even more so.

Total 21
Just Say NO! to 6:5 Blackjack
By Henry Tamburin from
Casino Player magazine

It’s Time For Players to Stand Up & Fight
There’s a cancer growing in the game of blackjack—those abominable single-deck games that only pay 6:5 for a blackjack. If players don’t do something about it, the game will continue to spread. But you can help get rid of this game, and I’ll show you how in a moment.

Historically, a blackjack hand has always paid 3:2. So if you bet $10, you will be paid $15 (a 3:2 payoff). This assumes, of course, that the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack on the same hand.

Single-deck games have traditionally attracted more blackjack players because they believe they have a better shot at winning playing against one deck. In fact, knowledgeable players who use the basic playing strategy in a single-deck game can reduce the house edge to virtually zero.

Upcoming entertainment for Sept. is still in the works.

Entertainment, swimming, dancing, volleyball are all free. the events are free and open to the public. The only cost incurred by our guests are food and beverage (and gaming of course). We are positioning it as "A Real Pool Party for Real People" so laid back and relaxing unlike the very club like atmosphere at other pool parties around town.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News. August 2008

August days in Las Vegas are certainly the dog days of summer—instead of a hot and dry 115 degrees, it's 105 with enough humidity to make it uncomfortable.  Monsoonal showers are always a threat at this time of year, and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere, anytime…and there are a lot of warnings about flash floods and the dangers of driving through them.  (It really hasn't been a problem this year.  After six months, we have still had less than an inch of rain all year.)  According to all of the weather records, July is the hottest month in Las Vegas…but for some reason, August always seems hotter.  There are still a lot of pool parties and summer concerts going on.  There are a couple of new shows on the horizon, and the convention season is just starting with a couple of big conventions coming to town.

The first convention of note will be Creation Entertainment's Official STAR TREK Convention at the fabulous Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, home of STAR TREK: THE EXPERIENCE, the $50 million dollar attraction that literally is Star Trek live! The 2008 edition of the convention continues in the enduring spirit of offering our attendees the absolute best time ever, a full four days of non-stop entertainment honoring Gene Roddenberry's legacy of a positive future for mankind. With an amazing array of celebrities, events, parties, food functions, autographing, photo ops, vendors, auctions, contests, live music, comedy and surprises: you are invited to leave the "real" world behind and join the fun. As the crown jewel of Creation's 36 year history of fan conventions, this event is "the one" to be at. And unlike all other "huge" fan conventions Creation Entertainment never sells a ticket that does not include a seat in the main theatre. You won't miss a guest or event or spend your time waiting on lines to get into a theatre! Make your plans to join the celebration from August 6th - 10th.

MAGIC is the convention that really kicks off the season.  This monster show, showing off the winter collections, comes to town at the end of the month and well over 140,000 people are being expected to attend.  The men's garment convention is always a popular and well-attended event.  From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.

A surprising little show, which just recently opened up, is Wes Winter - A Tribute to Liberace.  This production takes place in the afternoons at the Steve Wyrick Theatre.  It is just Wes and a piano out there, but the evening with the music is just great.  Wes is a self-taught pianist, and he doesn't even read music, but he has certainly mastered the instrument and does a terrific job at emulating the style of Liberace.  It is not an impersonator show…just a wonderful show with music.  You don't have to be a Liberace fan to enjoy the show; you just have to enjoy good piano music.

Scarlett - the Princess of Magic (a.k.a. Scarlett the Deceiver) has signed a deal with the V Theatre for the next six months…with the hope, of course, that it will be successful and then extended.  She is a bit of a phenomenon in that she has been in Vegas for less than a year and has landed her very own show. Scarlett's daytime show should be a memorable experience: she performs illusions, dressed as memorable Hollywood stars throughout her family friendly show. The eclectic list includes everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Michael Jackson. David Saxe, V Theater's show producer and managing partner states that "I have not seen such stage presence in a female magician since my sister, Melinda: The First Lady of Magic."  Scarlett opens the first of the month.

There are several shows that have closed, or are closing…

Toxic Audio is leaving the V Theatre.  The a capella group had a good run here, and they have a lot of touring gigs to fulfill.

Rosanne Barr was initially going to take August off and then return to her one-woman show at the Sahara, but sluggish ticket sales made the decision for her to just not return.

Criss Angel along with Cirque du Soleil will be opening their show "Believe" at the Luxor sometime soon…  The original opening was scheduled for September, but it was (of course) delayed until October…by mid-September, Cirque should announce another delay in opening the show…and then there will be previews for three months while they figure out how to cut is down from three hours to ninety minutes…  It has happened with every Cirque show that's opened here…  It will be great…when it actually opens.

And there were a couple of other small shows that appeared and disappeared so quickly that I can't even recall their names…it is just more evidence of a lethargic economy.  When there is a slow down in Las Vegas, then we know that there is a problem.  A year ago, we thought that gas would never reach $4 a gallon, and now, we're thrilled that it has come down to $4.  It has caused fewer people to make the drive across the desert.  A lot of people's disposable income is no longer disposable, and they think twice about that weekend away.  I realize that there is an ebb and flow to everything, but I'm not sure how much more we can ebb…we're ready to start flowing again.

The month starts off a bit slow as far as the headliners go, but it certainly picks up steam, and of course, September will be crazy.

For dates and times, be sure to log onto the Las Vegas Online Entertainment Guide: ( www.lvol.com ).

I Go Shows ( www.Igoshows.com ) is, of course, the place to read the reviews of all of the shows that are in town so that you can be better informed as to what you should expect from a certain production.  The reviews are updated as needed to give you the knowledge you need to spend your entertainment dollars better.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Off to the races.

This is for all you horse racing fans out there, me included. It’s that time of the year again “where the turf meets the surf” at Southern California’s beautiful Del Mar racetrack. Jerry’s Nugget will host the Del Mar Handicapping Contest every Saturday, now through Aug. 30.
Every week you will have a chance to pick your favorite horse in any five of the first eight races on the Saturday Del Mar card and accumulate points for Win, Place and Show. The first place prize is $400 with $100 for second. Contest winners who are More Club card holders will receive a bonus dining certificate of $30, good for any restaurant at Jerry’s Nugget. Each entry is only $10 and you can enter up to three times per week. Visit the casino’s race and sports book for a complete listing of contest rules. Good luck.
Bye Bye Barr. You’re out of luck if you had planned on seeing Roseanne Barr at the Sahara. She has vacated the premises as of last week. She had originally planned to take August off, but then said that because her youngest son will be in school in California, she wanted to be there in September.
Some of this may be true, but I think the real reason for her departure is that she wasn’t doing boffo business and the fact that the Sahara is going to be featuring a new show called "Raw Talent Live" sometime in August, even though that show will be in another theater at the resort. No replacement has as yet been named for Barr. It looks like the Platters, Coasters and Marvelettes, whose contract is up at the end of August, will be given an extension.
One of my favorite performers is also saying goodbye to the Strip, but there’s only good news connected to this move. Singer/impressionist Gordie Brown will be ending his run at the V Theatre (Planet Hollywood) on Aug. 9 to begin a five-month gig as the opening act for Celine Dion's North American leg of her "Taking Chances" tour. He will join Dion in Montreal, the starting point of the tour, a week after he leaves his current gig.
The tour ends in Sunrise, Fla., on Jan. 30, but Brown will return to Las Vegas where, according to his manager Bernie Yuman, he has a long-term deal waiting. Don’t be surprised if that deal is working once again for his old boss, Sheldon Adelson at the Palazzo. Brown had a long, successful run at The Venetian before being replaced by Wayne Brady, but at that time there were rumors that Brown would be given his own theater at the Palazzo once it was built.
But wherever he goes, it will be great to see him back in Las Vegas. If you’ve never seen him, make sure you do when he returns. Without doubt, one of the best shows in town.
Another show that will bite the dust this week after a long run at the Flamingo, is The Second City. Great show, good response, as there had to be for it to have lasted seven years. This comedy revue was clever, irreverent, and oh so funny. My colleague Mike Weatherford reports that according to an exec with the show, The Second City was vacating the premises because, in his words, “We just didn’t have enough seats.” Whatever the real reason, the Strip loses another quality show. No word on a replacement.

Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel to Open August 28

Despite a nationwide slowdown in the gaming industry, Cannery Casino Resorts (CCR) will open its second casino in little more than a year — the Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel — on Thursday, August 28. The first major casino to open on the east side of Las Vegas in more than a decade, will officially welcome guests at 8 p.m.

Located in the Boulder Highway gaming corridor, the $250 million
Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel features a 16-story tower of bronze, glass
and steel, with a distinctive saw-tooth roofline, making an iconic
impression. The opening will take place a little more than a year after CCR
opened a successful temporary casino at The Meadows Racetrack & Casino in
Washington, Pennsylvania. Construction is on schedule for the opening of
The Meadows' $175 million state-of-the-art permanent casino in the spring
of 2009.

"Cannery Casino Resorts has been able to move forward during these
uncertain times with projects such as the Eastside Cannery because we
surround ourselves with talented people who have passion for their craft
and are among the most talented in the world at what they do," said CCR
Principal William Wortman. "Eastside Cannery is a reflection of that
passion and our ongoing vision and commitment to providing the best service
for our clientele. Given the state of our current economy, I cannot say
enough about the work our construction and design team did to build this
incredible facility on time and on budget."

"We take great pride in providing a first-class casino to the local Las
Vegas market, but we take even greater pride in the jobs we create for
hard-working local families," said fellow CCR Principal William Paulos.
"Close to 500 local construction jobs were created and 800
family-sustaining jobs were created by Eastside Cannery are welcome news as
our region endures some of the toughest times in recent memory."

Guests will enjoy a casino that features more than 2,100 of the very
latest and most popular slot machines, 26 table games, a 450-seat bingo
hall, live keno lounge, a first-class poker room and a Race and Sports
Book.

For meeting planners, the Eastside Cannery provides 20,000 square feet
of ballroom and meeting space to service a variety of meeting and
convention needs. The main ballroom is 17,000 square feet and can be
divided into five rooms. There are two additional meeting rooms, as well as
two boardrooms located near the main ballroom.

Eastside Cannery will offer an array of dining options to fit any
budget and craving, from the succulent prime rib served at Carve(SM) to the
delectable seafood ceviche at Casa Cocina(R). The soon-to-be locals'
favorite, Sweet Lucy's Tableside Buffet(SM), offers up a warm family
atmosphere with a variety of dishes to choose from that the whole family
can enjoy. The Deli(SM) will provide a quick pick-me-up while watching the
action in the Race and Sports Book or taking a break from the excitement of
the casino floor. Snaps 24-Hour Cafe(SM) will feature traditional favorites
from super-sized sandwiches to garden-fresh salads to hand-cut steaks.
Slated to make its debut in the fall is the much-anticipated lounge and
kitchen, ONE SIX(SM). Set atop the 16th floor, the ONE SIX will feature an
amazing view of the Las Vegas skyline.

Guests can choose from more than 300 oversized rooms and suites that
showcase floor-to-ceiling glass windows, providing spectacular views of the
nearby picturesque mountains and the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.
The 450-square-foot guest room decor and furnishings are reminiscent of the
ongoing industrial theme of the property, but have a fresh 21st century
feel with wide-screen plasma televisions in every room. Guests who book the
600-square-foot corner window suites are treated to an exceptional view
while soaking in their in-room spas. Five 900-square-foot executive suites
on the top floor also are available with the finest amenities.

"We will never waver in our commitment to construct and operate
world-class casinos," Wortman said. "Eastside is a fantastic venue that
people will enjoy for years to come."

New Restaurants on The Strip by Robin Leach.

Open less than a month, the new Yellowtail Sushi restaurant at the Bellagio is quickly building a celebrity clientele. The latest star to visit was actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Malcolm and friends ordered up eel, yellowtail and sashimi while sipping on Kirin beer.

The actors who make up the cast of Jersey Boys at the Palazzo have begun calling the new Sushi Samba restaurant a second home! Owner Matt Johnson (in less than three weeks since opening) has decided to offer an authentic Sunday Brazilian brunch with his unique Japanese-Latin American cuisine. He’s also set Aug. 15 as the opening date of the new Sugarcane nightclub and lounge inside Sushi Samba.

Tattooed chef and DJ Steve Martorano is back behind the grill and his kitchen turntables at Café Martorano in the Rio through next week, and he’s created a new, Italian summer menu for the best season for ripe tomatoes and fresh vegetables.

His eggplant stack is a unique masterpiece not found in any other Vegas eatery. It features lightly breaded eggplant layered with fresh mozzarella and vine-ripe tomatoes, topped with arugula, extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar and slices of thinly shaved, imported parmigiano-reggiano.

Rapper Ludacris, members of the Team USA basketball team and Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy Sinatra, along with longtime Blue Eyes confidante Jilly Rizzo were in to enjoy the feast. Summer seasonal cocktails — especially the strawberry basiltini, combining the sweetness of basil and strawberries with a touch of lemon tartness — make for a refreshingly delicious accompaniment.

During dinner, Steve plays the mellow music of Sinatra, Darin and Dino, then picks up the tempo with old-school Motown to go with scenes on the plasma screen TVs that encircle the dining room. When Steve mixes Lou Rawls with Barry White, diners jump out of their seats to dance table-side, and he told me a few have even done their version of Dancing with the Stars on top!

In other restaurant jottings, LBS, the new classic American burger joint opening this fall at Red Rock, has begun the hiring process. Applications for the 150 positions both in the kitchen, at the bar and in the restaurant should be made at Red Rock on Saturday. "LBS is a completely new take on the traditional burger joint," said Billy Richardson, well-known Vegas strip nightlife and restaurant entrepreneur who is the creator and operator of the new restaurant. "We are seeking energetic and experienced staff that will help shape our vision and create an unparalleled guest dining experience.

"The focus of LBS is to deliver the best hamburgers anywhere in Las Vegas. Executive Chef Anthony Meidenbauer has a culinary philosophy that incorporates artisan handmade ingredients and earth-friendly menu items. We have no pre-packaged, frozen, mass-produced or flavorless items, just the best ingredients simply prepared. LBS burgers will have fresh all-natural, hormone-free Hereford beef and organic turkey, selected by the in-house highly skilled butcher and ground fresh every day. LBS will also offer a totally vegan burger, filled with farm fresh vegetables, grains and herbs."

With contemporary and retro design elements, the interior of LBS is reminiscent of the quintessential American roadhouse. The 101-seat restaurant will feature a rugged exposed brick and wood interior, with distressed leather accents and brushed steel fixtures. On the ceiling above the main entrance will be a dramatic 25-by-30-foot American flag, constructed using automobile license plates representing every state in the Union. The wall opposite the entrance will feature an 8-foot-wide blown-glass sculpture of a Texas Longhorn head of cattle, especially created for the restaurant. The bar at LBS will feature more than 40 different micro brew blends and bartenders schooled in the nuances of beer making who act as "beer sommeliers." LBS will join nine other restaurants at the casino resort.

Triple-8s a wedding jackpot in Vegas By Robin Leach

In Vegas, we used to think 777 was our lucky number, but this year 888 is proving a bonanza — at a time our troubled economy really needs a boost.

Hundreds of romantics are invading Sin City starting to ready for their weddings and marriage vow renewals at chapels downtown and up and down the Strip. “Definitely busier than any other day this year except maybe Valentines will just beat it out by a little” said one restaurateur who is booked solid almost around the clock with wedding parties. “It’s a date that all superstitions point to as good fortune — especially for newlyweds.”

The number 8 is considered “very good luck” in the Chinese culture. Tipped on its side 8 becomes infinity -– and thus a positive omen for those tying the knot or saying “I do” all over again. Vegas HD TV is even shooting over 100 of the best, the most outrageous and the wildest and wackiest weddings at different chapels during the 24-hour period for an upcoming world-syndicated television special. Crews with 12 hi-def cameras in different chapels will capture the weddings at 10-minute staggered intervals.

Even the BOA Steakhouse and Sushi Roku restaurants in the Forum Shops at Caesars have created special eight-course menus to celebrate the fortuitous date. The “Infinite Experience” meals include a $75 wine pairing option. At BOA, its Blue Fin Tuna Carpaccio, Truffle Nachos, Classic Caesars, Jumbo Lump Crab Cake, Grilled Jumbo Prawns, roasted crispy duck, American Kobe Fillet on mushroom ragout and a handcrafted artisan dessert specialties. Next door at Sushi Roku its Yellowtail sashimi, Tuna Carpaccio, Sea Bass, Stone Frill Kobe Beef, Tuna, Yellowtail, Japanese Snapper, Salmon, Eel, O’Toro, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, avocado eel, rainbow, California, Toro and Jalapeno sushi – all served family style with one piece per person capped off with a dessert sampler! So yummy it might just pay to get married!
