Everything Las Vegas Issue # 672

July 18th, 2008

The Everything Las Vegas Slot Tournament

Monday morning, July 7th, 7am. I awake on the day that I have been waiting for for over nine months. This is the day for a Las Vegas first, a slot tournament sponsored specifically for members of the Everything Las Vegas website. All the time, all the emails, all the people that it took to orginize this project was about to come to fruition in about 6 hours.

I was surprised I fell asleep so easily the night before.

At 8:30am on the 7th, I hop on the monorail for a 9am meeting with Ira David Sternberg who is Vice President of Communications and Community Relations for The Las Vegas Hilton and Jason Grossman who is a Slot Shift Manager at The Hilton. Ira has been very involved with the tournament since it's inception and really went above and beyond when it came to his committment to the tournament. Without his help, there never would have been a tournament so I owe Ira a BIG "Thank You."

We all went over the itinerary for the day and everything started to fall into place. To my surprise, I felt no pressure. There was actually a feeling of relief that everything was going so smoothly.

At 11am, I was meeting Jane and Marty at the buffet area. They were to be my helping hands and my extra shoulders to lean on. Jane was going to be our greeter and Marty, who has a vast amount of restaurant experience was going to be our Mr. Congeniality in the buffet room.

At noon, the members started to arrive for the buffet. Jane greeted them and sent them back to our private room where Marty would take over. I tried to say hello to everyone as they came in but that was impossible, so I made the rounds during lunch. The buffet room was set up table and booth style with varied amounts of seating capabilities. You could sit with as many or as few people that you wanted to. There was a lot of mingling between members which was great to see.

In addition to our 40 members, I asked my friend, Las Vegas entertainer Larry G. Jones if he would like to act as emcee for the tournament and come to the buffet. It was nice of him to do this and he was a big hit with my members.

The buffet started at 12:30. Before heading to the buffet I made an announcement welcoming everyone and I explained the rules of the tournament and exactly how to use the tournament machines. I also announced the extra prizes that the LVH was donating to the random prize drawing I was having after the award ceremony. A 2-night/3-day stay at the LVH, 2 pairs of tickets to the Scintas and 2 pairs of tickets to Menopause. Along with these prizes, Jay Kornegay, the Executive Director of the LVH Race and Sportsbook gave us a goodie bag filled with hats and T-shirts as additional prizes. In all we had about 25 additional prizes to give out.

By this time, everyone was hungry and we all headed to the buffet. Everything went smoothly as everyone got their food very quickly and it was great to see people heading back for seconds and thirds.

I want to mention that the service at the buffet was excellent. The hostesses were very nice to us and the waiters kept all our glasses filled and our tables clean.

At 2pm, we headed over to the area where the tournament was going to be held. Richard the slot tech was there and set everything up so fast, we actually had time to kill before the 2:30pm start time. That's when Larry took over and did some of his impressions to pass the time. It was great fun for all.

We had a total of 45 players who were ready to go. At 2:30pm the tournament started and the button banging began. The Red, White and Blue sevens (800 points) were being hit left and right. It was hard keepng track of them. After 15 minutes we took the 24 highest scores and those people advanced to round two, After another frenzied 15 minutes of slot play, the 10 highest scorers advanced to the final round.

By that time we had our own players along with people from the Hilton along with regualr casino patrons picking their favorites in the final round and rooting them on. It was really exciting! When the smoke from the final round cleared, Wayne from Canada had the highest score, followed by Diane from Hawaii in second place. For the life of me, I can't remember who was third. Wayne won $650, Diane won $350 and our third place finisher won $200. After the money awards were handed out, we gave out all the other prizes. As it turned out about 30 out of 45 players won something.

I think this entire event went better than I ever could have imagined it would go. I felt I did a good job as the announcer. I was really intimidated with the thought of speaking into a microphone but once I started, you couldn't get the microphone away from me, I gave kudos to the players that were doing good and was sarcastically funny to the people doing bad, Just ask Rebecca and "Mom." I was running up and down the rows of slot machines like a maniac announcing the scores. I really had a lot of fun.

I think everyone had a great time, even if they were eliminated in the first round. This was my objective with the buffet and tournament..for everyone to have a great time and I think this was accomplished 100%. It was great to meet all my members and some of them go as far back as my old AOL Las Vegas Chatroom days.
So let me thank all my members that made this a special day for me. I am not patting myself on the back but I did put a lot of time and effort into this venture, but it was the members that made it al worthwhile. It was never a job, it was always fun. The cost of the buffet and the tournament was $42 per person. We spent a total of 4 hours between the buffet and tournament. That comes down to $10.50 a hour. This has got to go down as the best Las Vegas value in history!!

I also can't stress enough the cooperation that I got from everyone at The Las Vegas Hilton. The Hilton is a great place to play; they have great entertainent, great restaurants and most of all, great people working for them. Please give them your patronage on an upcoming trip; I know you will enjoy yourself. Don't forget to sign up for a Player's Card while you're there.

As for next year, I think things are looking good for another tournament. I will let you know all details as far in advance as I can.

Season Seven of the World Poker Tour will soon be a Sunday-night mainstay of Fox Sports Net. Twenty-six one-hour episodes of WPT are slated for prime time, beginning with coverage of the final table of the Bellagio Cup. After five seasons on the Travel Channel, the tour hopped to GSN for the '07-'08 season, but show and channel elected to part company, opening the door to Fox. Airdates and the time slot for the '08-'09 WPT season are yet to be announced. Said Fox veep George Greenburg, "The World Poker Tour has a track record as the ultimate brand name in televised poker … FSN is very happy to televise such quality content."

Today's Wall Street Journal contains a big story on LA entertainment empressario Sam Nazarian's plans for the Sahara. It's a bit light on details, but reinforces previous beliefs that Nazarian plans to revamp, rather than implode, the resort. It also designates 2010 as the target for completion, which suggests that things should start happening there soon.

"Toxic Audio" out  After being rumored for a while, it's now official: Toxic Audio closes at the V Theater on July 30. Its 2:30 p.m. time slot will be filled, starting Aug. 1, by the magic show Scarlett, which will play Fridays through Wednesdays.

Having been tapped as Celine Dion's opening act, Gordie Brown will be winding down his commitment at the V Theater, at Planet Hollywood. Brown's show will be dark Aug. 12-13 and close on the 23rd, to resume "sometime in early 2009."

Sunday night saw the curtain rung down on the final performance at Wynn Las Vegas of the Monty Python musical Spamalot. After the curtain calls, star John O'Hurley made a speech praising his cast members as a great family and hailing the Spamalot experience as one of the capstones of his career. His 18-month-old son also put in an appearance — costumed as King Arthur.

Steve Wynn
has asked Clark County for a waiver for the animated sign that will herald Encore, at the the meeting of the Desert Inn arterial and the Strip. The 130-foot-tall sign will accommodate nearly 4,000 square feet of signage, half of it animated. As the planned sign will not interfere with pedestrian traffic, it is expected to be approved.

On his LA Times blog, Richard Abowitz reports that unobstructed-view seats for Cirque du Soleil's forthcoming Believe are going for as little as $59, the lowest of five price points (maxing out at $150). Abowitz notes that the cheapest seats for Love and Zumanity, respectively, are $93.50 and $60 — with obstructed views.

The latest official opening date for Cirque du Soleil's "Believe" show at Luxor is Oct. 10. Already pushed back from September, the premiere had been rescheduled for Oct. 9. Explains Steve Friess, on his blog, "it's because nobody in Montreal realized when they picked Oct. 9 that it was the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur." So the Criss Angel vehicle will bow on a Friday night instead of the planned Thursday.

Due to open this fall in the space formerly occupied by 55 Degrees Wine & Design in Mandalay Place, Minus 5 will be an ice lounge where "you can touch, feel, and explore intricately handcrafted ice sculptures and one-of-a-kind ice architecture made from 100% pure Canadian ice."

While we're not sure what the mystique about specifically Canadian ice is, apparently everything in this New Zealand-originated concept bar will be made from pure, crystal-clear, glacial ice — from the seats you sit on to the glasses you sip your premium vodka cocktails from. It takes the ice bar and Vodka Locker at MBay's Red Square to the next level and will be open from 10 a.m.-3 a.m. daily and available for private hire for receptions hosting up to 150 people.

Win Cards are now available at the Mandalay Bay, offering $30 for $20 in casino table game chips. These special, non-negotiable chips actually "stay-in-play" until lost.  The Win Cards packet also includes playing strategies and instructions and even a token tip for the dealers.

The "sensual" Cirque show Zumanity at New York-New York is offering its customary summer discount, with 35% off select performances now through Sept. 30. The show performs at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly (dark Mon. & Thurs). Call 866/606-7111 or visit zumanity.com for tickets.

In the ongoing poll being conducted by Steve Friess to determine the worst pool in Vegas, it looks like the Imperial Palace has the dubious honor sewn up. Although voting is still in progress, the IP has opened a commanding lead on Harrah's Las Vegas and the Riviera. Friess' earlier "Best Pools" poll was won in a landslide by Mandalay Bay, which also sits at the apex of LVA's own Top 10 Pools list.

Sam's Town's
former Fresh Harvest Café is now called Café in the Park and has been moved to the location formerly occupied by Fellini's, which is gone (and is not coming back). The space formerly occupied by the former Fresh Harvest Café will be turning into a TGI Friday's (opening in or around October 2008). Got that? Good. Then please explain it to us!

AGASSI EVENT DETAILS by Norm Clarke

Major changes were predicted when Andre Agassi moved his Grand Slam for Children to a smaller venue this year.

Details were confirmed this week with the arrival of invitations to the Oct. 11 mega-event at Wynn Las Vegas. Crowd size will be significantly smaller than previous events that averaged about 7,000 people at the MGM Grand Garden, and the tickets will be much higher.

The specific venue at Wynn was not specified.

The move to the Wynn, after 12 of the events were held at MGM Grand Garden, was announced in April.

Because of other major charity events it was supporting, the MGM Mirage stated there was no way it could continue at the previous commitment level. MGM Mirage agreed to continue its $1 million commitment.

Agassi has raised about $70 million for his foundation through the Grand Slam event.

One of the biggest disappointments is bound to be the format change that makes the event more exclusive and doesn't include seating for the concert alone.

No individual tickets will be sold, meaning it is table-only sales, with 10 to a table.

Pricing levels include silver ($10,000 per table) which are sold out; gold tables cost $17,500; and platinum sells for $40,000.

The highest-level option, diamond, will cost $85,000 per table, and includes 10 invitations to a private VIP performance hosted by Agassi on Friday, Oct. 10. It will feature entertainment by James Taylor and John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and 10 invitations to the unveiling of the commemorative 2008 Grand Slam for Children artwork by James Rosenquist that same night.

The diamond level includes premium seating for the Saturday event.

'Antiquated' ban on cell phones in sports books could be lifted.
By HOWARD STUTZ/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Cellular telephones may soon be allowed inside Nevada's race and sports books after the Gaming Control Board on Thursday recommended repealing the regulation banning their use.

The Nevada Gaming Commission will make a final ruling at a later date.

The decades-old ban was enacted to keep betting lines from being transmitted outside the state and to discourage layoff wagering by illegal bookmakers inside Nevada casinos. However, casino representatives want to end the prohibition because of the advent of Internet sports books and the countless number of Web sites that transmit sports wagering information.

SHOW REVIEW: "Dean and Friends" featuring Tom Stevens

Singing with Sincerity: Impressionist Tom Stevens draws appreciative audience at Riviera.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Locals remember Tom Stevens and he remembers them — along with anyone else feeling a little old-Vegas neglect on the Strip.

His audience for "Dean and Friends" in the Riviera's cozy Le Bistro cabaret is small but appreciative. When the impressionist does his Robert DeNiro singing "My Way," one couple stands up and applauds.

When he finishes Neil Diamond's "I Am … I Said" a different couple, on the other side of the room, gives up the standing O.

But it's not until his full-blown "The Music of the Night," complete with "Phantom of the Opera" half-mask, cape and even lighting cues on the little stage, that all two dozen or so are brought to their feet.

MCCARRAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: County approves third terminal.

Airline officials argue expansion too risky in current climate.

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Clark County is pushing forward with a $1.8 billion airport expansion in Las Vegas despite pleas to hold off from airlines who fear there won't be enough passengers to justify the cost.

In a letter to leaders of McCarran International Airport, airline officials say the state of their industry is so shaky that every airport upgrade that can't be justified by current need should be canceled or delayed.

The letter got to the Clark County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, moments before the board voted to award Perini Building Co. a $1.2 billion contract for the new terminal building, scheduled to open in 2012.

NORM: Curtain falls on flying body parts.

Life is going to be a whole lot duller for 14 musicians who spent 18 months avoiding flying body parts while playing for "Monty Python's Spamalot," which closed Sunday at Wynn Las Vegas.

There were too many maimed knights to remember.

"Near the beginning of the run, the head of the knight decapitated by the killer bunny rolled into the pit at least five times," recalled solo French hornist Beth Lano.

"No damage was done, and on at least one occasion, the head was lobbed back up onstage, with the conductor not skipping a beat in throwing it back."

In the Black Knight scene, "we had a few occasions where the knight's arm fell into the pit, once directly into the arms of Wayne Green, the conductor, who found himself in the unfortunate position of having to hold onto the arm while continuing to conduct with his own two."

On at least two occasions, the exploding Holy Hand Grenade flew back into the pit, Lano said. "And while the catapulted cow didn't completely make it into the pit during the show, the tail and hindquarters hung precariously over the edge a few times, the result of overzealous catapulters."

She said the cow did land in the pit during one of the rehearsals, however.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: DooWop, KISS add sizzle to summer.

If you're like me and love the oldies, you won't want to miss DooWop in the Desert as it presents a Sizzling Summer Oldies Concert this Saturday, July 19, starring Kenny Vance & the Planotones, Frankie Lymon's Legendary Teenagers, The Chiffons and others. A ticket will cost you $55 and goes up from there. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., at Alexis Park, 375 E. Harmon.

And for a limited time only, if you order 10 tickets or more you get a free satin jacket with your name on it (a $125 value). The jacket is black with a full color logo which includes the phrase: "The Music That Will Last Forever." Very cool! For tickets, call (702) 454-4229 or visit www.doowopinthedesert.com and use the Contact Us link.

In case you haven't grown tired of watching Gene Simmons and his family on his TV reality show, KISS will bring their Alive/35 Tour to The Palms for one night only at The Pearl Concert Theater on Friday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m.

Hard to believe, but KISS is celebrating 35 years of rock 'n roll on their record-breaking European tour where shows in Helsinki, Finland, and Oslo, Norway, sold out less than one hour after tickets went on sale and fans in Stockholm, Sweden, bought all 32,000 tickets in just 20 minutes. The group has added only a few U.S. summer tour dates, including their stop at The Pearl.

In honor of their 35th anniversary, the band plans to play their"Kiss Alive" album in its entirety as well as a few surprises and rarely played live KISS classics. Should be a great show.

Tickets are $153 and $303 and don't ask me why they added on the three bucks, seeing as you still have to pay any additional service fees. You can get tickets by calling 702-474-4000 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com. If you want to pick them up at the Pearl Box Office, it's open from noon to 7 p.m. daily.

It's summer. It's hot. So the idea of jumping into a pool or even hanging out at one is very appealing, especially when it's at one of the best pool sites in our town. I'm talking about the Tropicana that features "Mint Mondays," complete with food, fun and entertainment every Monday from noon to 11 p.m.

Here's what you can expect. A DJ and band rotates throughout the evening with the DJ blasting the tunes from noon until 7 p.m. and the band taking the poolside stage from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All bands appearing at Mint Mondays are published artists and cover such music genres as Caribbean, Cajun, Latin and other music styles. The DJ will wrap up the evening with more music hits.

If you're feeling active, you can participate in an array of activities during the pool party — pool volleyball, swimming, dancing and even gaming at the Trop's swim-up blackjack tables.

Hungry or thirsty? Not to worry. Three barbecue grills are posted throughout the pool deck serving menu items such as Jerk Chicken Breast, BBQ Brisket Sandwiches, Broiled Italian Sausage, Fish Tacos and Carne Asada. Two portable bars, in addition to the permanent Coconut Grove Bar and Swim-up Bar, serve up the cocktails.

And if you haven't been to the Trop's pool in a while, a new lighting, sound and stage system has been added and includes top technology such as DL-2 projection and dynamic lighting.

If you want some privacy to do those things that "stay in Vegas," private cabanas are available for rent during the Mint Mondays parties. Each includes a personalized food and beverage server, chaise lounges, chairs, a table and a complimentary fruit basket. For cabana reservations call 702-739-3595.

Not to confuse you, but Mint Mondays is not restricted to just Mondays. A similar version of the pool party takes place every Friday and Saturday throughout the summer. The best part is that all pool parties at the Tropicana are free admission and open to the public.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Las Vegas perfect for poker musical.

Poker champ Phil Hellmuth calls Tim Molyneux "a creative genius," and predicts he may be "the next Andrew Lloyd Webber."

Hellmuth may be swayed by the fact that a character in Molyneux's "All In: The Poker Musical" is based on him. But whatever you call him, Molyneux is one of the rare, priceless individuals who realize that someone with more dollars than sense can bring their oddball artistic visions to life in Las Vegas.

Personally, I was rooting for Molyneux to be less Lloyd Webber and more Ed Wood, the fabled bad movie director of "Plan 9 from Outer Space," whose ambition overruled his ineptitude. Molyneux is the creator of "Bite," the Stratosphere late show in which topless vampires cavort to strip-club rock anthems from the '70s.

Romantic Rendezvous.
Paris' iconic landmarks light up the heart of the Strip. By Leslie Frisbee
Las Vegas Magazine

Among the many cultural influences and diverse attractions that give Sin City its global appeal is one of the world's most recognizable landmarks, and you don't have to cross the pond to see Paris' most famous symbol. Piercing the horizon in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip is the Eiffel Tower. A half-scale replica of the real deal, the Tower is the centerpiece of Vegas' version of the City of Lights. The 50-story structure is just one of the many attractions that gives Paris Las Vegas its je ne sais quoi.

Synonymous with romance, the Eiffel Tower Experience provides an awe-inspiring, panoramic view of the city from 460 feet above the Strip. Open for tours from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 a.m., guests can gaze at Vegas landmarks through the glass elevator and enjoy an unparalleled view of the Strip from the observation deck.

After dining on gourmet French cuisine at the breathtaking Eiffel Tower Restaurant, take a stroll across the Pont Alexandre III bridge. Considered by many as the most beautiful bridge in the world, the Parisian arch is adorned with ornate cherubs, nymphs, a winged horse and art nouveau lamps and spans the Seine River, which flows through the heart of Paris. The Vegas reproduction, which sweeps across the front corridor of the hotel, provides a stunning view of the 85,000-square-foot casino floor.

You couldn't possibly visit Paris without a trip down Le Boulevard. Along the cobblestoned streets of the shopping promenade are très chic boutiques including Les Eléments, a specialty gift and garden store, and Les Boutique, an exclusive shop featuring high-end designers and an haute couture shopping experience; authentic French patisseries and cafés round out this quaint village, which is reminiscent of the Rue de la Paix neighborhood of Paris.

Tucked in the back of the shopping gallery is Napoleon's, an upscale champagne and cigar bar. Adorned in deep reds and dark browns, the lounge, which features dueling piano performances, is a mixture of old-world charm and Vegas glitz. Boasting more than 100 champagnes and sparkling wines by the bottle and glass, and a light menu featuring exquisite appetizers and hors d'oeuvres including pan-seared foie gras, lobster, caviar and truffles, Napoleon's is the perfect prelude to a night on the town.

If you're looking for a place to kick up your Louboutins, then head to Risqué. Located at the front of the casino, Risqué is one of the most chic nightclubs on the Strip. Elegant décor, plush seating areas and DJs spinning the latest hip-hop, R&B and house music make this club a favorite among Vegas' most astute clubgoers. With two separate rooms playing different music and swank VIP tables overlooking the Bellagio and Arc de Triomphe fountains, this posh venue is just one of the many things that makes Paris the crème de la crème on the Strip.

Getting in synch with the swimmers of Le Reve.
By Kate Silver/Las Vegas Magazine

It's not everywhere that you can see underwater footage. The Olympics spring to mind, and, well, so does Shark Week. But in a production show? Not until recently, with the opening of Le Rêve Theater's VIP "Champagne Circle." Here, viewers lounge in cushy, spacious chairs in the top row of the theater-in-the-round, sipping champagne while watching this artistic exploration called Le Rêve, or The Dream. As fire and water take center stage, they'll have to decide where to look: at the dancing and flying furniture above the water or the video screens at their feet, showcasing the synchronized swimming and underwater acrobatics below.

It's a difficult decision, but, ultimately, watching below the water (and behind the scenes) wins. The televisions highlight the best views of the 14 synchronized swimmers, along with the literal and figurative depth they bring the show. In line with what the theatrical world has come to expect from a Franco Dragone production (he created "O" and Mystère while he was with Cirque du Soleil), these aren't just any synchronized swimmers. They come from across the world, and each has competed on the international level. Part of their skill lies in making the performance look so effortless, whether they're climbing slippery trees, flipping over trapezes or performing a sensual underwater tango.

"We used to compare it to a combination of water polo, long-distance running, dancing and gymnastics. If you combine all those, that's kind of how synchronized swimming is," said Christina Lum, a San Francisco native who competed nationally and on the U.S. Olympic team. "We're all national team Olympic level, and we trained many, many years. So for us, it's something that we're used to doing."

Dacha Nedorezova, who coaches the swimmers, also emphasizes the skills required.

"Technically, it's extremely hard," Nedorezova said. "Girls are upside down for three minutes and have to support themselves with their arms. It's very difficult, and only the effort of an international level that can do that."

Nedorezova was on the national synchronized swimming team for the Soviet Union from 1988 until 1991. She left the competitive sport to join a French company, which was the first to do aquatic shows. In learning how to use the trapeze and other circus-style tricks, she was able to complement and expand her swimming repertoire.

She's also been instrumental in the choreography and is responsible for coming up with the "Tango" scene (pictured). Here, the swimmers' sparkling red shoes shoot out of the water, performing a flirtatious upside-down dance.

But choreography aside, what's really valuable to Nedorezova and others is the opportunity that shows like Le Rêve offer to synchronized swimmers everywhere. It was once a sport that had limited career options for swimmers, but times have changed, drastically.

"It's important for girls to see that there is a future after competition," Nedorezova said. "They discover that they can have a career doing something that they love to do."

Revisiting the Magic.
Siegfried & Roy's new tiger cubs keep the legendary entertainers' legacy alive.
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

In 1989, the Strip was just beginning the renaissance that would usher in an era of big production shows and even bigger hotels, and at its epicenter was The Mirage, Steve Wynn's $630 million resort with its Stripfront volcano and 50-foot waterfall, million-gallon dolphin pools and, perhaps most iconically, the resort's first guests: four white tigers escorted by illusionists Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn.

Born in Germany during World War II, Siegfried & Roy were just youngsters when the Flamingo and Desert Inn were reshaping the Vegas skyline. As legend has it, Siegfried found a five-mark bill in a gutter near his home of Rosenheim in southern Germany and immediately purchased a magic book he had seen in a store window. Some 500 miles north in the port town of Nordenham, Roy was discovering his own kind of magic, the kind that existed between him and Chico, a cheetah at the nearby Bremen Zoo.

Their love for magic and exotic cats already cemented, Siegfried & Roy, separately, took jobs on an ocean liner in 1957. Roy caught a glimpse of Siegfried, the ship's resident entertainer, pulling a rabbit out of a hat and found a kindred spirit; the pair became fast friends, and Roy joined Siegfried's act as an assistant. At Roy's insistence, they incorporated larger animals into their act and toured around Europe, eventually catching the eye of a representative from Folies Bergere, a Las Vegas revue that still plays at the Tropicana. What had been a hard sell across Europe was a perfect fit for Las Vegas. Siegfried & Roy debuted at the Tropicana in 1967 and began a remarkable relationship with the city that continued as they moved to Lido de Paris at the Stardust, Hallelujah, Hollywood at MGM Grand (now Bally's) and headlining gigs at the Frontier and, beginning in 1990, at The Mirage.

Siegfried & Roy: Masters of the Impossible set the standard for large production shows in Las Vegas, running for 13 years and commanding the highest ticket prices. For 10 shows a week and nearly 40 weeks a year, they packed their 1,500-seat showroom at The Mirage, where their legacy continues to thrive long after their final, fateful performance on Oct. 3, 2003.

Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden, the lush enclave behind The Mirage, is home to the pair's royal white tigers, which they have worked tirelessly to protect since the early '80s. In June, they welcomed five new white, white-striped and golden tiger cubs to the habitat, bringing renewed attention to their sterling conservation work. "While we no longer perform nightly, our conservation efforts to save and care for these magnificent creatures are part of our daily life," Roy said. "These new cubs are a gift from the universe, and it brings us great joy to share them with the world."

MAMMA MIA! The Movie Gets Two Thumbs Up From Local Cast & Crew.

The cast and crew of MAMMA MIA! Las Vegas enjoyed a sneak preview of the highly anticipated flick, MAMMA MIA! The Movie, on Sunday, July 13 at Rave Motion Pictures in Town Square.  Backed by melodies of the iconic super group ABBA and a Hollywood star-studded cast, The Movie had local performers buzzing with enthusiasm from beginning to end.  Take a look at what some of them had to say…

“This is the perfect feel good summer movie,” said MAMMA MIA! cast member Victor Wallace (Sam Carmichael).  “One of those films that will be a cult classic.”

Lead Carol Linnea Johnson “loved it” and said she is “really looking forward to stealing all the stuff from Meryl that hasn’t occurred to me yet!”

“It was fantastic!” said Marshal Kennedy Carolan (Sky).  “Dominic Cooper really embraced the laid-back, easy to fall in love with guy.”

MAMMA MIA! set yet another benchmark for Broadway musicals in Las Vegas as the show celebrated its fifth anniversary at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino on February 13, 2008.  Due to popular demand MAMMA MIA!, which was previously scheduled to end in August after more than 2,300 performances, will now play through January 4, 2009.

BLT Burger Opens at The Mirage

Acclaimed chef Laurent Tourondel opens his award-winning BLT Burger at The Mirage today.  As the famed resort continues to grow its roster of dynamic restaurants, BLT Burger is an approachable yet innovative addition to its dining options.

Tourondel was named one of Food & Wine magazine’s Best New Chefs in 1998 while cooking in Las Vegas at Palace Court Restaurant.  He has since created several successful restaurants around the country and was honored as Bon Appétit magazine’s 2007 Restaurateur of the Year.

“It’s exciting to come full circle,” Tourondel said. “The Mirage is one of Las Vegas’ leading destination resorts, and I’m excited for BLT Burger to join the mix.”

BLT Burger offers a variety of burgers including beef, American Kobe, lamb and Atlantic salmon, each served on soft buns with tomato, red onion, iceberg lettuce, pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.  The beef patties are a combination of Certified Black Angus sirloin, short rib, chuck and brisket.  Specialty burgers include the Tex-Mex, a 7-ounce beef burger with jalapeños, chili, avocado, salsa, jack cheese, onions and sour cream; Lamb Tandoori Burger, a slightly spicy Colorado lamb burger topped with mint-cilantro yogurt sauce, cucumber, olives, red onion and tomato; and a signature Meatball Burger composed of ground veal, pork and ricotta and served with garlic pomodoro sauce.  In true Las Vegas style, Tourondel offers The Stripper, a 7-ounce beef burger served with lettuce, tomato, onion and bell pepper without the bun.

Though burgers take center stage, BLT Burger’s diverse menu offers a number of tempting starters and salads in addition to more than eight types of fries and rings, including waffle-cut, sweet potato, jalapeño poppers and fried pickles.

Beverages afford just as many options, with an array of milkshakes in classic and spiked varieties, innovative cocktails, as well as an impressive beer list and focused wine selection to quench every guest’s thirst.  Cocktails are cheeky nods to Las Vegas entertainment and include such selections as The Showgirl (Plymouth Gin,  St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and lemon, grapefruit and cranberry juices), Dancing with the Devil (Sauza Blanco Tequila, Crème de Cassis, lime and ginger beer) and Tumblin’ Dice (Knob Creek Bourbon, Fernet Branca, bitters and a splash of cherry).

Milkshakes tend toward the whimsical and are inspired by classic American desserts: the Twinkie Boy blends vanilla ice cream, a Hostess™ Twinkie and caramel syrup; Give Me S’More combines chocolate ice cream with toasted marshmallows and graham crackers; and the Puddin’ Pop is a rich slush of chocolate ice cream, chocolate pudding and chocolate shavings.  For those who want to add extra punch to their shake, BLT Burger’s Spiked Milkshakes are the perfect adult treat in flavors such as The All Nighter (Kahlua, Baileys, espresso and coffee ice cream), The Highlander (Guinness Stout, Coole Swan Irish Crème and vanilla ice cream) and Malibu Barbie (Malibu Rum, pineapple juice, coconut milk and vanilla ice cream).

To further satisfy a sweet tooth, desserts include sundaes in either Strawberry Cheesecake or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavors; a French twist on the usual Ice Cream Sandwich with a Dutch chocolate macaroon and hazelnut ice cream; and “Krispy Kreme” Doughnut Bread Pudding with rum-raisin coconut sauce.

Scott Sibella, president and COO of The Mirage, said, “Burgers, fries and shakes prepared by a chef as talented as Laurent Tourondel are a sure hit.  BLT Burger is a wonderful addition to our offerings and certain to be a great success.”

Designed by Rockwell Group, the 198-seat BLT Burger is an ideal setting to showcase the craftsmanship and freshness behind Tourondel’s superlative hamburgers. The hip and casual setting reflects both the natural Nevada landscape and the glamour of Las Vegas with end-grain wood, walnut and yellow-glazed lava stone, accented with red glazed brick, golden furniture upholstery and dramatic lighting.

According to designer David Rockwell, “BLT Burger celebrates the DNA of the burger with the central grill, which is surrounded by beautiful glazed red brick tile. I wanted to emphasize the ritual of grilling burgers in the midst of the Nevada landscape.”

The entrance features a dimensional wood block ceiling that is illuminated from behind, changing in color and intensity to transition from day to night.  The comfortable banquettes and booths in the front section of the restaurant have views of the grill and are accented with polished, chrome pendant lights for intimacy. Throughout the space are table tops lacquered with large table numbers, simple schoolhouse-style wood chairs and patterned gobo lights that provide a club-like atmosphere for late-night dining.  The 16-seat, yellow-glazed lava stone bar has barstools accented with stitching details. The illuminated bar is a perfect place for sitting and eating while watching the action. Overhead flat-screen televisions display sporting events during the day and digital imagery for an evening ambiance.

The curved walls of the back section of the restaurant evoke an outdoor environment with a 16-foot, floor-to-ceiling sepia tone panoramic photo mural of the surrounding Sierra Nevada landscape.  The circular open grill is surrounded by a polished, red-glazed brick wall and covered by a large metallic dome illuminated with colored lights.

BLT Burger, located at The Mirage Hotel & Casino, 3400 Las Vegas Blvd South, is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 11 a.m. – 2 a.m.; Monday, Thursday-Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4 a.m. Reservations are not required.  For more information, please visit www.bltburger.com, www.mirage.com or call 702.792.7888.

BODIES…The Exhibition Las Vegas Moves to Luxor Hotel and Casino.

Premier Exhibitions, Inc. announced today that BODIES…The Exhibition is moving to Luxor Hotel and Casino and will open its doors on August 2.  One of the most fascinating and educational experiences in Las Vegas, the Exhibition is the first to debut in Premier Exhibition’s new 36,800 square foot exhibition center at Luxor.

“As a company we look forward with great anticipation to hosting BODIES…The Exhibition at the Luxor,” states Bruce Eskowitz, President and CEO of Premier Exhibitions, Inc.  “Nearly a million people have seen this unique and groundbreaking Exhibition during the two-year tenure at its current location and we look forward to continuing our commitment to visitors and residents in one of the greatest entertainment markets in the world.  The transition of Bodies to Luxor this August is a first step to our long awaited and exciting partnership.”

Described as a “life-changing experience,” BODIES…The Exhibition showcases more than 260 full body, organ and partial body specimens.  These real human bodies have been meticulously dissected, preserved through an innovative process and respectfully presented, giving visitors the opportunity to view the beauty and complexity of their own organs and systems.

Felix Rappaport, President and COO of Luxor said, “We are delighted to welcome BODIES. . .The Exhibition to Luxor.  We are committed to offering a dynamic array of amenities for our guests, and this exhibit will be a wonderful addition.”

In addition to providing an up-close look inside our skeletal, muscular, respiratory and circulatory systems, the Exhibition encourages healthy lifestyle choices.  Authentic human specimens illustrate the damage caused to organs by smoking, over-eating and lack of exercise.  A healthy lung is featured next to a black lung ravaged by smoking in a vivid comparison more powerful than any textbook image.

The human body specimens in BODIES…The Exhibition are preserved through a revolutionary technique called polymer preservation.  In this process, human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber that is treated and hardened.  The end result is a rubberized specimen, preserved to the deepest cellular level, showcasing the complexity of the body’s many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs.  The full-body specimens can take over a year to prepare and after undergoing the polymer preservation process, they become impervious to decomposition.

After a wonderful run at Tropicana Resort & Casino, the exhibition will close on July 20th to make way for its transition to the Luxor.

Tickets to BODIES…The Exhibition are available beginning August 2 at the Luxor box office or by visiting www.bodiestickets.com. Ticket prices are $31 for adults, $29 for seniors, $23 for children 12 and under, and $28 for Nevada residents and Luxor hotel guests. The Exhibition will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with last admission at 9:00 p.m. It is recommended that children 12 and under are accompanied by a teacher or parent as an adult guide. For additional information or to reserve tickets by phone, call 800-557-7428.

SHOW REVIEW: Anthony Cools and "Ooh La La"
Getting Dirty: Cools, 'Ooh La La' keeping it nasty.

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Can a show get more recession-proof than people doing the Big Nasty with chairs?

For five years, hypnotist Anthony Cools has served up the most primal of comedy on the Strip. He has carved out a little miniempire at Paris Las Vegas, offering a Vegas/frat-party version of repertory theater in a former tour-and-travel lobby.

Cools' raunchy hypnotist act is framed, at least for another couple of weeks, by performances of "Ooh La La," the topless show he created a year ago. That one apparently isn't as immune to hard times, at least not before dinner. The 7 p.m. show disappears Aug. 1, cutting the performance schedule in half, to six shows each week at 11 p.m.

THEATER CHAT: 'All In: The Poker Musical' a poor addition to Las Vegas entertainment.

By ANTHONY DEL VALLE/LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

I squirmed through much of this thing called "All In: The Poker Musical" which was given a preview concert at the Rio Masquerade Showroom last week. (Actually it was a preview of a preview. Performers did an hour's worth of singing, some staged, and folks were charged up to 50 bucks for the privilege.)

The evening began with poker hero Phil Hellmuth telling us that lyricist/composer Tim Molyneux was going to be the next Andrew Lloyd Webber, and that "All In" was going to be running "40 or 50 years from now." If that's true, it's time we Nevadans with concern for the arts head to higher ground because our children will simply not be safe.

If you didn't know who Molyneux was, you were out of luck because reportedly Hellmuth got so miffed that his name was misspelled in the press-night program notes, that he refused to allow the notes to be distributed.

Vegas4Visitors Weekly Awards by Rick Garman

The You’re No White Tiger Award of the Week goes to BLT Burger, the new restaurant now open at The Mirage that took the place of the popular White Tiger habitat near the south entrance of the hotel. The upscale burger joint is the brainchild of award winning chef Laurent Tourondel and features burgers of all strip ranging from about $8 up to $17 for a Kobe beef variety, plus eight different types of fries and rings, and handmade milkshakes including “spiked” versions with everything from Maker’s Mark to Malibu Rum. For more info visit http://www.mirage.com/dining/casual_dining_blt.aspx.

The You ARE a White Tiger Award of the Week goes to, well, the new white tigers at The Mirage. Just because they don’t have their own habitat doesn’t mean they aren’t still there and now five new tiger cubs have been added to the Siegfried and Roy Secret Garden attraction behind the hotel. Four are white and one is golden.

The Headline of the Week Award goes to the Las Vegas Review Journal for this one: “Naked Man Hijacks Bus.” It sounds a lot worse than it wound up being – the short version is that a naked man stole some beer and then jumped on the back of a city bus, broke a window, threw the driver off, and drove a short distance before abandoning it and running. No one was seriously injured in the incident and the man was apprehended without further incident.

10th Anniversary Special: What I Miss Most By Rick Garmen

September 2008 marks the 10th Anniversary of Vegas4Visitors.com. This website was launched shortly after I stumbled into writing about Las Vegas through a friend that asked me to help her write the Frommer’s Las Vegas guide book. Afterward I wrote the first edition of the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Vegas and I probably could’ve kept going on that track but it was the late nineties and the Internet was calling.

Since then I have written nearly 500 weekly columns; visited and reviewed every major hotel, show, restaurant, and attraction; and lost more money than I care to think about in the casinos.

Vegas4Visitors.com has been a labor of love more than a living. We don’t actually make a lot of money off the site simply because I wanted it to remain an independent source of Las Vegas travel planning information. Other Vegas websites that shall go unnamed are owned by corporations and have partnerships that make it difficult for them to be unbiased. Here at Vegas4Visitors.com you get unvarnished opinion – if I don’t like something, I’m going to tell you.

While we’re not the biggest Vegas website, we’re certainly one of the most respected and tens of thousands of readers just like you visit Vegas4Visitors.com every month.

As a part of our “celebration,” I’m going to be doing a series of items for the column that look back at the last ten years.

This week, I thought it would be interesting to do a quick Top 10 list of the things I miss most – my favorites from the last ten years that are no longer around.

1 - Cheap Rooms
I have a very specific memory of one of the first times I visited Las Vegas in the 1980s. I stayed at The Dunes and got a Strip facing room near the top of the tower for $19 per night. Of course it couldn’t compare to the luxurious accommodations of today’s Las Vegas hotels but I miss the days when things like rooms, restaurants, and shows were “loss leaders” designed to get people into the casino.

2 - The Pirate Battle
The old Pirate Battle at Treasure Island was a silly bit of inoffensive fun; a stunt battle between marauding pirates and the British navy with explosions, high dives, and general yo-ho-ho wackiness. The newer Sirens of TI show that replaced it is crass, tasteless, and silly but not in a good way.

3 - Caesars Magical Empire
This was one of the most entertaining experiences in Vegas – an interactive dinner and magic show patterned after the famed Magic Castle in Los Angeles. You could spend hours seeing a variety of different illusionists, eating, drinking, and generally having a good time all at a cost that was less than what you’ll spend to get in and drink at Pure nightclub, the thing that replaced it.

4 - Hannah’s Restaurant
I named this my favorite restaurant in Vegas a couple of years ago and of course it closed. Located on the far west side of the city, most of you probably never had a chance to visit so you’ll never know what you missed, which was, quite simply, some of the best Pan-Asian cuisine I’ve ever tasted.

5 - Casino Legends Hall of Fame
Las Vegas is a city that loves to blow up its past so this low-key attraction that used to be at The Tropicana was a delight, celebrating Sin City history with photos, memorabilia, exhibits, and a Hall of Fame for the people that made the city what it is.

6 - Clint Holmes
Don’t get me wrong – I love Rita Rudner who took over the showroom at Harrah’s where Clint Holmes used to play, but I really miss the old-school singing and dancing entertainment that Holmes brought to The Strip. Relying on his talent and charm instead of explosions, topless dancers, or French-Canadian stunt people, Holmes was a throwback to the Rat Pack era that we just don’t have in Vegas anymore.

7 - Chicken Challenge
If you don’t understand why I miss the chicken that played tic-tac-toe against humans at The Tropicana then you just don’t know me at all.

8 - Palms Fantasy Market Buffet
The old buffet was inexpensive and interesting, with a wide variety of food including unique Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes that you couldn’t find at any other buffet. It’s replacement at the Palms is more expensive, smaller, and boring.

9 – Spamalot
It just closed this past weekend, but I miss this wacky bit of Broadway silliness already. The Tony-Award Winning musical based on “Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail” was the type of entertainment that should’ve worked in Vegas.

10 – Avenue Q
This show never should’ve worked in Vegas – another Tony-Award winning musical that was sort of “Sesame Street” meets “Rent” complete with puppets that cussed, watched porn, and had sex. It was, simply, too brilliant for the short-attention spans of most people who come to this city.

Casino Cage Match: Bellagio vs. Wynn Las Vegas BY Rick Garman.

When picking hotels to pit against one another in the Casino Cage Match, I like to try to find places that are somewhat comparable in terms of their mission statement (whether it's stated or implied). I mean, I could put an budget hotel like Excalibur against a luxury hotel like Caesars Palace but it wouldn't be a fair fight since Caesars is just so much "more" than Excalibur (although the latter would probably win in the cost category). In Las Vegas there are probably no two hotels that are more closely matched than Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas. In addition to competing for the same upscale crowd they were even designed and shepherded into existence by the same person, casino magnate Steve Wynn.

Now that Bellagio is owned by corporate giant MGM Mirage while Wynn, appropriately enough, owns Wynn the two have become competitors for the moneyed, luxury crowd. So which one does a better job? Read on.

Parking and Access
The parking structures at Bellagio and Wynn are very similar, simple 4-story structures located directly adjacent to the building. Getting in and out is relatively simple for both once you get off the actual street but Bellagio faces a challenge because of its location. The busy Center Strip spot means lots of additional traffic (both vehicle and pedestrian) than Wynn's slightly less busy North Strip location so access is just a little easier at Wynn.

Once you park your vehicle, getting into the hotel is a breeze at both places but Bellagio gets some bonus points here. Its garage puts you right into the Conservatory area, just a few feet away from the lobby and very close to the casino whereas the Wynn garage puts you into a relatively narrow hallway by the poker room that requires a long trek to the check in desk.

Although the traffic thing is daunting, I have to tip this one to Bellagio just for ease of use once you get inside.

Checking In
Both hotels have the multi-line check-in that I absolutely despise, where each agent has their own line and you have to try to figure out which one is going to move faster. If you're like me and you always choose the line at the grocery store with the person ahead of you that has a coupon for every single item, you'll know what I mean when I say this can be a frustrating experience.

Since both hotels fail in that regard and the staff at both is top notch, we have to compare the experience and surroundings.

Bellagio's lobby is huge and stunning, with the big colorful blown glass chandelier, art work, floral arrangements, mosaic tile, and more. The only downside to this is that the area is as much an attraction as the fountains out front with hordes of tourists snapping pictures. After being on a long flight or car ride, I don't really fancy being in Aunt Edna's photos that she's showing back home to the neighbors. Wynn's lobby, by comparison, is much more sedate in good and bad ways. There are works of art and flowers but the room is smaller and less awe-inspiring that Bellagio's. But that does mean fewer people photographing you with airplane hair.

Part of the Vegas experience is "going big" and having a lobby like the one at Bellagio definitely qualifies so I'm giving the nod to that hotel in this category.

Getting To Your Room
Once again both hotels face similar demerits in this category because both require you to walk through the casino to get to your room. As we all know, fighting the crowds while loaded down with luggage - or stumbling back to find your bed at 5am after a night of partying - just isn't fun.

It's actually further from the front desk, front door, and parking garage to the elevators at Wynn Las Vegas but the good news here is that you can skirt the edges of the casino as opposed to having to walk directly through it. At Bellagio it's still quite a long journey from the entry points and you have to walk through the heart of the gambling action.

The winner here is Wynn Las Vegas.

Rooms
This is where personal taste makes a big impression on the decision making.

The rooms at the two hotels are elegant, luxurious, and loaded with the finest in-room amenities in town. In fact if you compare the two solely on what you get while you're in there, they are almost perfectly matched.

The differences come in play with the decor and overall feeling of the spaces. Bellagio's rooms are more classical in design, with furnishings, drapes, fabrics, and art that while modern, evoke a more old-world style. Wynn Las Vegas, meanwhile, is all about modernity, with sleek lines, bold colors, and high-tech everything.

The standard rooms at Wynn Las Vegas are also only a little bigger in terms of square-footage but they just feel bigger - more open, airy, and brightly lit.

My taste runs to the modern, so I'm giving this category to Wynn Las Vegas.

Casino
Another personal taste and past experience category surrounds the gambling experience.

To be honest, neither casino is among my favorites for places to play. Bellagio feels a little too stuffy for my tastes and Wynn, while more comfortable aesthetically, doesn't have very good spacing between the tables and machines.

So for me it has to come down to where I have won the most money. I know that's not very fair and is all luck of the draw (hence the whole "gambling" thing) but when two casinos are fairly evenly matched in all other considerations then I have to find some way to tip it in one direction or another.

I've won more money at Wynn, so Wynn wins.

Service and Amenities
The staff at both hotels is professionally courteous and efficient but I've always felt a little bit more "warmth" at Wynn. That isn't the exact word I want but I can't come up with a better one so we'll just go with it. There's nothing wrong with the service at Bellagio but it can sometimes come off as a bit brusque.

In terms of things to do inside the building, there are winners on both sides. Wynn Las Vegas has more entertainment (two show rooms instead of one), more shopping, more interesting restaurants, the better buffet, a bigger pool, and an onsite golf course. Bellagio, on the other hand, has the iconic fountains out front and conservatory and art gallery inside, things Wynn just can't match.

I went back and forth on this one for quite awhile. In the end though, the service difference and the "more" aspect tips this one to Wynn, but only by the slimmest margin. There may be a hanging chad involved so a recount is possible.

Cost
Both hotels are almost painfully expensive, so we're measuring the winner in this category by degrees of how outraged you'll be when you get the bill.

At Bellagio you can sometimes get a room during the week for less than $200 a night and occasionally a room on the weekend for less than $300. It's rare but it can happen. At Wynn Las Vegas those prices are also possible but are even more difficult to find.

This is a sweeping generalization but the rates at Wynn Las Vegas are usually more expensive than at Bellagio. Not always and not always by a lot, but usually.

Now, granted, as discussed you get more at Wynn - more stuff in the hotel, a bigger room, and the like. But it's still going to cost you more so Bellagio takes this category.

The Decision
What we have here in terms of categories is, essentially, a tie. Wynn got 4 out of 7 but the Service and Amenities category was basically a split decision and there's that whole hanging chad thing so it's more like 3.5 to 3.5.

But Wynn Las Vegas won the more important categories such as rooms and casino, while Bellagio took things like best parking (and even then it wasn't a knockout punch).

So the winner of this edition of Casino Cage Match is Wynn Las Vegas.

Leaping Lipizzaners! Stallions to strut their stuff at South Point.

The World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions return to Las Vegas this weekend to thrill anyone who appreciates equestrian beauty.

The equestrian version of “Legends in Concert” will prance, strut, soar and high step into the South Point arena.

The World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions are not the same group as those from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, although the horses are of the same bloodline and the dancing routines are similar.

“We purchase horses from the Spanish Riding School and we produce their shows when they come to the United States, but we are not affiliated with them,” Troy Tinker says during a telephone interview from Monterey, Calif., where the horses were getting set for a recent performance.

Square Apple by Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

There’s a new old club in town. The Square Apple debuted quietly a couple of weeks ago, an elegant little nightspot that features live music seven nights a week.

The headliners are saxophonist Tommy Thompson and his band, featuring knockout vocalist Jeannie Snow, Wednesdays through Sundays.

The Slick Willie Orchestra, headed by saxophonist Tommy Alvarado, takes the stage Mondays and Tuesdays.

The Square Apple is at 1000 E. Sahara Ave., in a funky part of town that only adds to the ambience of the club, which offers valet parking and a red carpet entry.

If the location sounds familiar some may remember it from about 10 years ago when it was the Keys, a gay bar. Then it became the Dakota, which catered to the straight crowd. Then it became Zingers, which catered to the straight and gay and cross-dressing crowds.

Last year it turned into Just Jazz, which, sadly, had an all-too-brief run.

Perhaps the Square Apple will have better luck.

The owners have created a charming room with an urbane air where folks can enjoy a beverage and dance or simply listen to the music, which includes some jazz, some blues and some rock.

T&T (Tacos & Tequila) will be a highly stylized, 8,000-square-foot restaurant with a high-energy vibe and flavorful menu that will open in late August at the Luxor. Utilizing their years of hospitality experience, creators and owners Michael Frey and Craig Gilbert announced that T&T will be the first project under the formation of their new company, Drive This Entertainment!. T&T will be located above hotel registration. It will be open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and offer late-night dining until 3 a.m.

T&T will embody traditional and modern elements of Mexican style intermixed with a rock 'n' roll flair. Frey describes the eatery as - think Pink Taco meets Coyote Ugly interpreted by Quentin Tarantino. T&T will feature five icons of Mexican culture - the sombrero, the shot glass, the bullfight, skeletons and seductive women.

Embracing Mexican culture through its design and cuisine, T&T will capture attention with a massive brushed aluminum covering inspired by the sombrero. Two 20-foot laser cutouts depicting skeletons dancing and drinking tequila will adorn the "sombrero," which will be lined with lights that shoot down toward the ground, reflecting the images on the floor and peppering the space with jagged illuminations. Serving as additional eye candy and a second design focal point, the bar area will feature a 25-foot-by-40-foot mural illustrating the excitement and voracity of a bullfight and the sensuality of its main subject: a female matador. Three similar murals with provocative images of the matador and bull will appear in the restaurant's lounge area, El Salon, positioned off the main dining room. In keeping with the Mexican theme, the designers have chosen a bright color palette of yellows, reds, greens, oranges and blues throughout the restaurant in chair coverings, countertops and decorative lighting. Complementing its bold style, T&T will pump rock 'n' roll music into the space and create a unique bar experience with trained Tequila Temptresses, who will sport T&T branded apparel and provide guests with expert recommendations on tequila pairings or shots. The concept will also feature a freestanding frozen daiquiri bar, which will offer drinks to guests on-the-go. Guests can also shop for men's and women's apparel and gifts.

From "The Vegas Eye"

Vito Bruno is trying to bring Disco to Vegas. Big time. He’s been in Las Vegas this week , primarily at The Venetian, meeting with several hotels about bringing several of his East Coast-productions to Vegas … most notably 'Disco Ball' (which has thrived in recent years on the East Coast). The show is a compilation of the greatest disco acts ever. Also, Bruno is looking for the perfect place for one of his most treasured acquisitions – TOTALLY SERIOUS HERE — the original dance floor from the movie SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Bruno calls it, "One of the most recognizable items ever from a movie. Its iconic. Its authentic movie memorabilia." Bruno says it's priceless and deserves the perfect location and in the right setting. Bruno also manages dance-artist CRYSTAL WATERS, who will appear at Bruno's BEATSTOCK shows on the East Coast next month. HEY VEGAS: How deep is YOUR love? I really need to know …

Hollywood's favorite "it" girl Cameron Diaz satisfied a late night craving at Fix Restaurant & Bar at Bellagio on Saturday night. The blonde beauty arrived at midnight with two other females and enjoyed an array of mixed vegetables including a baby lettuce salad, grilled asparagus, mini potatoes and roasted mushrooms. The trio dined quickly and left after 45 minutes to go gamble in the Bellagio.

Executive Chef Alex Stratta transforms Corsa with the new down-to-earth menu and downtown vibe of STRATTA. Corsa Cucina, the sleek Italian trattoria inside Wynn Las Vegas known for its rustic-style cooking and friendly ambience, completes its transformation this week with the launch of it’s new name, STRATTA. STRATTA is the latest signature restaurant by star chef Alessandro Stratta. His other restaurant, Alex, is the premier fine dining restaurant at Wynn Las Vegas, now internationally recognized by the Mobil Travel Guide with Five Stars, by AAA with Five Diamonds and most recently by the 2008 Las Vegas Michelin Guide with two st Chef Alex describes the food at Stratta as…“very soulful and very representative of what I consider to be the best of regional Italian cooking. We are applying the same spirit and the same cooking techniques that we use at restaurant Alex, but in a very approachable way that focuses on flavor and tradition. And many of the ingredients will be the same as the items we use at Alex – flavorful olive oils from Tuscany and Liguria, or the San Marzano tomatoes, the plum tomatoes that make the best sauce in the world.” While the dishes may evoke the sophistication one might expect at Alex, the Chef is quick to point out that the menu at Stratta is far more down to earth. “Alex is uptown and Stratta is downtown – it’s a bustling restaurant with a totally different vibe. I want Stratta to be simply about good food and fun.

Approximately 400 lucky Bette Midler fans got a priceless treat last night, when the Divine Miss M decided to hold a surprise book signing after her critically-acclaimed production "The Showgirl Must Go On" at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Bette made the announcement to her audience that evening and was greeted to a massive line when she appeared on The Colosseum steps. From about 10 p.m. until 2 a.m., Midler signed autographs for customers who purchased her book "The Adventures of Baby Divine" and her new greatest hits CD "Jackpot" among other items available at her stage-side boutique. "The Showgirl Must Go On" plays five nights per week until July 20. The show resumes on October 9.

Is it a mysterious death or a murder mystery? SAGE, an 11-year-old lady dolphin, died Saturday in an aquatic habitat at The Mirage on the Las Vegas Strip. Company officials have said they are investigating the demise of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin but officials with PETA — People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals – have already sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's animal care division urging an investigation into the July 5 death. Sage was found dead at the bottom of a pool at The Mirage's Dolphin Habitat exhibit. PETA is calling for a necropsy to be performed on Sage in order to determine if there was any negligence. At least 12 dolphins have reportedly died at The Mirage since 1990 from causes including pancreatitis, pulmonary abscess, respiratory problems, and pneumonia, according to reports. In order to settle charges that it allegedly violated the federal Animal Welfare Act, The Mirage agreed in 2005 to make changes in the care that it provides to dolphins at the exhibit. The mortality rate for all species of marine life in captivity is high, experts say, because dolphins can become sick and die from contaminated water, from stress-related ulcers and from ingesting items such as rocks that are tossed into their tanks. They´ve also died from common ear and tooth infections. "The Mirage is gambling with dolphins' lives, and the dolphins always lose," says PETA Director Debbie Leahy. "Dolphins and deserts don't mix. In the wild, dolphins swim hundreds of miles. In Las Vegas, their 'habitat' is measured in gallons instead of fathoms."

But Alan M. Feldman, senior vice president for Public Affairs at the MGM Mirage,  took a dim view of the PETA intervention.

"We find PETA’s request unnecessary and their accusations to be inaccurate, poorly timed and in very poor taste," he said."This sadly follows the death of a much loved animal. If only PETA could point to just one thing that they’ve done with all of the monies they’ve raised to improve the life of a dolphin or educate the public on 'real' dolphin conservation issues. Our professional Animal Care staff continues to communicate with USDA inspectors, as we have been since Saturday, long before PETA injected itself into the process.

"The Mirage Dolphin Habitat will continue to uphold the highest standards of efficacy and professionalism in all areas of operations including research, public education and animal welfare," he said.

NOW. Before we go, how about a moment of silence for the valiant, doomed, Sage – whose candle burned out long before her legend ever did.

A glittering showcase of music, piano and showmanship will be performed by amateur and professional pianists as they tickle the ivories during the 2008 Liberace Piano Competition season. “We’re excited to continue a 15-year tradition of the Liberace Piano Competition, as this is a significant event in the piano performance discipline and vital for us to build greater awareness of the Liberace legacy of showmanship and support for the arts,” says Liberace Foundation President Darin Hollingsworth. “The competition, too, is important to help us generate additional funds to support our scholarship and grant program, as well as care for Liberace’s collection of glittering and delicate costumes, pianos, cars, antiques and jewelry. We invite the public and businesses to support us and come and watch the competitors.”

The competition will recognize pianists from across the U.S., and adults and children starting at age 8 were invited to enter the competition to compete in classical or showmanship categories. Philip Fortenberry will serve as Competition Artistic Director and Chair of the Adjudicator Panel. He currently is the associate music director for the Las Vegas musical production of “Jersey Boys” and holds a Master of Music degree in classical piano performance from New Jersey City University. He was an adjunct faculty member in the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University. Fortenberry has studied piano privately at Juilliard and previously competed in many competitions. The official competition season begins on Sunday, July 13, at 1:30 p.m. during the Liberace Museum’s monthly 2nd Sundays event with a showcase of pianists from last year’s competition who will perform in the Museum’s showroom. Too, an artistic poster will be revealed that will serve as the competition poster and 2008 semi-finalists will be announced at this time.

The Competitor’s Showcase event, where all competitors will be given the opportunity to tickle the ivories and showcase their talent, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 10, starting at noon. The Semi-Final competition will be held at noon on Sept. 13-14. These events will take place at the Liberace Museum, 1775 E. Tropicana Ave. (at Spencer), and admission is free but space will be limited with seating on a first come, first serve basis.

The finals of the 2008 Liberace Piano Competition are set for Sunday, Sept. 21, at the auditorium at Community Lutheran, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave. in Las Vegas. Cost of admission to the finals event is $15 per person or $50 for a family four pack of tickets. Proceeds from the competition admission will benefit two Las Vegas non-profit organizations: The Liberace Foundation and Family Promise.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News: July 2008.

July is the hottest month of the year…brace yourself.  110 - 115 degrees is normal right now, and 120 is not out of the question—and even though we are proud that it's a "dry" heat, at this point it's just plain hot.  We thank God for the invention of air conditioning, and we curse the Devil for the invention of power bills.  I know people that travel with oven mitts because if a car is left parked in the sun, the steering wheel is too hot to touch for driving.  Sunscreen and water are essentials during this time of year…don't leave home without them.  The best place to be is inside a casino or a showroom.  When the tourists are not inside; they'll be hanging out on the Strip suffering from heat exhaustion, or by the pool getting sun burnt.  It's a great time to really enjoy the beautiful summer nights…that is, of course, if anyone decides to take out the loan to buy the gas to get here.

"Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular" and "Love" have both just celebrated their two-year anniversary.  "Phantom" is a brilliant adaptation (which was done by the original team of Hal Prince and Andrew Lloyd Webber,) and is housed in a beautiful custom-made theatre.  "Love" is a spectacular show that features the music of the Beatles.  It is a grand and wonderful production—one that you would certainly expect from the Cirque Company.

Toni Braxton closed her show at the Flamingo. She had some health problems in April and just never came back.

"Hats!" closed its doors as well…it was sudden and really without warning.  They just decided to close.  I guess that the built in audience of Red Hat Society members wasn't really built in all that much…either that or they just don't want to buy the gas to make the trip to Vegas.

I was very sad to hear that Second City is going to be closing…the improv troupe from Chicago, as well as their school, is going to end its run on August 1st.  From what I have heard, though, the problem is really more about the space sharing that they are doing with the "X" show.  Second City really needs a dedicated space…and I believe that they are looking out for one.

"Defending the Caveman" finished its first year at the Golden Nugget, and is now signed on for another.  It is a hilariously insightful play about the ways that men and women relate and it proves its continued success in North America with recent sold out runs in Toronto, Philadelphia and Chicago with return engagements already booked.
