Whatever she had, Cher’s still got it.
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

In her new Las Vegas show, Cher is unabashedly unafraid to don any of the risque costumes of her youth.

Way back when Celine was still singing in French, Cher pioneered the multimedia circus in the ’80s: Even before her recent rounds of endless “farewell tours,” a Cher show was a barrage of self-celebrating video montages, interrupted occasionally by songs, which were themselves mere excuses for a costume exhibition.

The much-ballyhooed new Cher show at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace is more of the same, writ large. A pageant of new and vintage Bob Mackie costumes set to a greatest-hits concert (several spectacular examples are showcased, museum-style, in glass vitrines in the inner and outer lobbies at the Colosseum). A high-speed video catalog of classic outfit “reveals” receives some of the loudest applause of the evening — even before Cher steps on stage.

Cher and Cher-alike.
Who better to take to the Cher show in Las Vegas than the ultimate ‘other’ Cher?
By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

It was a big decision. Pretty much the biggest since senior prom.

Who was I going to ask to go with me to the Cher show at the Colosseum?

I had known for weeks that I was going to review Cher, but I was stalling about picking the perfect date.

The day drew near. I had to make a decision. Boss? Colleague? Hot clerk at Whole Foods?

Suddenly it struck me — I would take Cher to see Cher.

Cher fans are the real show. By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun.

The man walking across the casino at Caesars Palace had a boxer’s mug — a hard, chiseled face with a nose broken so many times it looked like something drawn by Picasso.

A 7 o’clock shadow colored his strong jaw. Powerful legs and hairy, muscular arms pumped rhythmically as he pushed his way through the masses.

Everything from his buzz cut to rhino-leather skin screamed boxer, bricklayer or Teamster, everything but the calf-length, black chiffon.

Someone who had just stepped off the street and seen this Rocky Graziano clone in an evening gown might have thought:

“Cher must be in town.”

And so is a small army of gays, lesbians and cross-dressers, and an even larger army of straight fans, turning out in droves to see the long-awaited over-the-top and underrehearsed show at the Colosseum.

CRISS ANGEL Believe - A New Show by Cirque du Soleil at Luxor - TICKETS ON SALE TODAY!

Tickets on sale today for preview and regular performances of CRISS ANGEL BelieveTM, the new Cirque du Soleil production set to open at Luxor Las Vegas. CRISS ANGEL Believe starring Criss Angel will open for preview performances September 1 and hold its Gala Premiere September 12, 2008.

Criss Angel is recognized as one of the most provocative artists in the world today.  In an attempt to pay homage to the late/great Harry Houdini, Criss chose “Believe” as the title for this unprecedented live experience.

On his death bed, legendary magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini told his wife the following; “After my death, many people will claim that they are still able to communicate with me. If their claims are valid, they will be able to tell you a code word - that word is BELIEVE.”

“I invite you to see my live show experience, you won't believe what is in store for you.  I guarantee that this show will blow your mind, reinvigorate the way you think about magic and reawaken the child that lives in us all,” said Criss Angel. “Nothing like this show has ever been created or even attempted before.  The collaboration with Cirque du Soleil and Luxor has been incredible.  You will Believe!"

“With CRISS ANGEL Believe, we are aiming to bring magic into a new realm. Currently in this creation process we feel as playful and excited as children in a gigantic toy store,”

“Criss and the team at Cirque du Soleil are part of the Luxor family,” said Felix Rappaport, President and COO of Luxor.  “We are delighted Luxor will be the permanent home for CRISS ANGEL Believe and we look forward to unveiling this exciting production for our guests.

The Show

CRISS ANGEL Believe will be a haunting exploration deep inside the inventive mind of mystifier Criss Angel as he hovers between the land of the living and a surreal world uniquely woven together by the distinctive imaginations of Criss Angel and Cirque du Soleil.

Unlike traditional magic-themed shows, CRISS ANGEL Believe transcends any preconceived notion of what it means to be emotionally engaged by the arts of mysticism and illusion. Imagine a fantasy, an allegory, a highly theatrical tableau of mood, reverie and emotion set against a backdrop of dreamlike darkness and light.

Criss Angel stars as a surreal, enigmatic Victorian Noble.  Along a path of imaginative exploration, he encounters Kayala and Crimson, two women who represent different aspects of femininity, four bizarre Ushers, who will introduce the audience to the baroque theater of Criss’s mind and a high-energy troupe of characters and dancers who mix a multitude of styles into a high-energy visual feast, punctuated by moments of grace and sensuality.

The stunning illusions in CRISS ANGEL Believe will not be presented as standalone elements, but as interdependent components using heightened imagery, fantastical creatures and impossible feats of legerdemain, all of which will be integrated into the dazzling, colorful fabric of the story.

CRISS ANGEL Believe will be presented in a custom-built theater at Luxor Las Vegas. Preview performances begin September 1 and the Gala Premiere will be held Friday, September 12, 2008.

Ticket prices:

Ticket prices: $150, $125, $99, $79, $59 plus tax.

The audience’s reaction and participation is an important step in this process. Harrah's Hosts World Most Competitive Flair Contest, June 3-5

Harrah’s Carnaval Court welcomes the world’s most skilled flair bartenders June 3 -5, for the fourth annual international bartending competition, Ultimate Flair Bartending Championship (UFBC). The outdoor, Strip-side venue has earned the reputation as the world’s premier flair bar, thus it is fitting that the best-of-the-best flock to Carnaval Court to compete for the title of UFBC champ. $60,000 in cash prizes is up for grabs in this three day competition.

UFBC contestants flip, spin, throw, balance and catch bottles, drinks, and various bar staples as they compete in one of four divisions: professional, semi-professional, tandem and women’s. The bartenders must qualify in a series of preliminary events during the first two days of the competition to vie for a spot in the finals on the third day. The grand prize winner will be awarded $25,000 cash, a professional flair bar, and a guaranteed seat in the Roadhouse Flair Finals, another world-class, international flair competition in Europe.  Last year’s pro division champ, Christian Delpech, and women’s division champ, Ati Grinspun will be back this year to defend their titles.

In addition to the most technical and precise flair moves, crowd-pleasing performances from previous years’ competition included acrobatics, pyrotechnics, costuming, high-energy music and elaborate choreography.

“UFBC has earned the reputation as the most fiercely competitive flair contest in the world,” said Jim Laughlin, Director of Food and Beverage at Harrah’s Las Vegas. “Each year the performances are more intricate, over-the-top and impressive; it’s an honor to have so much talent at Carnaval Court at one time.”

The event, sponsored by Pepsi, Smirnoff, Corona Light, Southern Comfort and Red Bull,  is the nation's highest paying flair bartending competition and continues to gain popularity among elite flair bartenders.  Their performances are judged on skill and creativity rather than just technical proficiency, allowing each bartender to showcase their talent. A panel of five judges, all seasoned flair bartenders, come from around the globe to crown the UFBC champs.

The schedule for the three-day event is as follows:  Registration: Mon. June 2; Qualifying Rounds: Tues.  June 3 and Wed. June 4; Finals: Thurs. June 5 from 8pm-12 midnight. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at www.harrahs.com, at the Harrah’s box office or by calling (800) 392-9002.

Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay Celebrates Endangered Species Day - May 16

In honor of Endangered Species Day, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is opening its classroom to the public from 1:30 – 4:00 pm on Friday, May 16 in an effort to help raise awareness.  The classroom will be filled with a variety of educational materials and activities, as well as Shark Reef staff to provide further information.  Shark Reef, home to a variety of Endangered Species, helps these animals have a better chance of survival by educating the public, participating in captive breeding programs and contributing to conservation efforts.  In addition to its current family of Endangered Species, Shark Reef will introduce a new Komodo Dragon display in June 2008, the first of its kind in Nevada.

If you can’t make it out to Shark Reef on Friday, but you still want to know how you can help, follow these five easy tips from General Curator for Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, Jack Jewell.

Support the Endangered Species Act by writing to your representative.

Be Green — the single greatest threat to wildlife is habitat destruction. By living green we reduce our impact on the environment

Conserve water – water is the single greatest resource for aquatic organisms; no quality water, no aquatic organisms

Do not buy products that are made from non-sustainable/endangered species i.e. ivory, tortoise shell, and exotic animal hides etc.

Support sustainable fishing practices as this promotes the take of species that are plentiful and does not target non-sustainable fisheries i.e. shark, tunas, bill fish and the inherent by catch.

Do The Dead Return? Las Vegas Seance

Las Vegas producer Robert Allen, best known for his successful Haunted Vegas Tour and Vegas Mob Tour has announced his latest project, The Las Vegas Séance, www.LasVegasSeance.com .

The "Las Vegas Séance" provides a 90 minute spine tingling look into the dark and mysterious side of the afterlife. The presentation invites you to experience the thrill of a live séance and perhaps grab a glimpse of the "Other Side." Guests will be given the opportunity to participate in interactive experiments designed to contact the spirit world.

According to Allen, "The possibility of communicating with the dead has fascinated people for centuries, with mankind's spiritual mortality being the source of great debate. Is death the final
end or just a curtain that can be swept aside? Is contact possible or just a magician's trick?
Either way it makes for exciting entertainment."

Look for the Las Vegas Séance to open in the summer of 2008.

Do Not Gamble On Your Safety by Bill Burton

Two weeks ago I took a trip Tunica Mississippi for the weekend to visit the casinos there. On Friday afternoon something happened that really amazed me. I was playing video poker at Sam's Town casino where I was staying when the smoke alarm went off. There were flashing lights and a very loud beeping of the alarm which I could clearly hear. I immediately hit the button to cash out. I grabbed my voucher from the machine and headed for the nearest exit. There were only about a dozen or so people who joined me outside. The rest of the people just kept on playing as if nothing was happening. Apparently, they all just assumed that it was a false alarm and didn't feel a need to take it seriously.

Earlier this year there were two casino fires within a week of each other. One was at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas, the other was at Foxwoods in Connecticut and both were reported on the national news. For this reason alone I was surprised that more people did not take the fire alarm seriously. Apparently most of the other people just felt it was too inconvenient to get up and go outside when the alarm went off. Instead of playing it safe they decided to gamble with their lives. Although it proved to be a false alarm this time there could've been serious consequences if it had been an actual fire. Fire alarms should always be taken seriously and you should leave the building immediately if you hear one going off! If it proves to be a false alarm you have only given up a few minutes of your time but if there is an actual fire and you don't heed the alarm you may be giving up your life.

Classic burger joint "LBS" coming to Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa in Fall 2008.

LBS, the classic American burger joint, is coming to Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in the Fall of 2008.  Dedicated to offering the best hamburgers in Las Vegas, LBS: A Burger Joint, serves up a modern twist on classic Americana.

LBS was created and is owned by Las Vegas restaurateur Billy Richardson. It will be located inside the main entrance of the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa, adjacent to the casino floor in the space previously occupied by Tides, which closes April 27.

“We’re looking forward to LBS arrival at Red Rock this fall,” said Ronan O’Gorman, general manager of Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa. “The addition of a great quality burger joint truly rounds out the dining offerings at the property.”

The focus of LBS is to deliver the best hamburgers anywhere in Las Vegas.  To this end, Executive Chef Anthony Meidenbauer has employed a culinary philosophy that incorporate artisanal, handmade ingredients and the idea of earth friendly menu items.  LBS has no pre-packaged, frozen, mass-produced or flavorless items, just the best ingredients simply prepared.  LBS burgers will have fresh all-natural, hormone-free Hereford beef and organic turkey, which will be selected by their in-house highly skilled butcher and ground fresh every day.  LBS will also offer a totally Vegan burger, filled with farm fresh vegetables, grains and herbs.  The use of house-made sauces, farm fresh, all-natural vegetables, farmstead cheeses and hand crafted buns demonstrates LBS’ commitment to culinary excellence seldom found in a traditional burger joint.

“Our goal was to strip everything back to basics to create the perfect hamburger in a casual restaurant that was accessible and guest-centric,”  said Billy Richardson, creator and operator of the LBS concept.  “Many restaurants nowadays tend to have this insipid air of self-importance and we are not going to be another so-called burger joint that features menu items like mango-infused sea bass.”

With contemporary and retro design elements, the interior of LBS is reminiscent of the quintessential American roadhouse.  The 101-seat restaurant will feature a rugged exposed brick and wood interior, with distressed leather accents and brushed steel fixtures.  On the ceiling above the main entrance will be a dramatic 25’ x 30’ American flag constructed using automobile license-plates representing every state in the Union.  The wall opposite the entrance will feature an eight-foot-wide, blown-glass sculpture of a Texas Longhorn head of cattle that was especially created for the restaurant.

The bar at LBS will be comfortable and accessible. Almost 40’ long, the hand-crafted bar is made of distressed walnut that has been aged for more than one-hundred years.  This heightens the classic bar experience of LBS, which also features a cocktail list with many libations from a simpler, bygone era including the Manhattan and the Rusty Nail.  LBS also features a beer selection of more than 40 different microbrew blends, and bartenders that are schooled in the nuances of beer making who act as “beer sommeliers.”  LBS understands that burgers and beer are a classic American combination.

Restaurant operations will be led by LBS Director of Operations, Kyle Madden, a veteran of the Las Vegas hospitality industry whose experience includes Tryst and Light.

LBS will join nine other restaurants at Red Rock including T-Bones Chophouse, Terra Rossa Italian, Hachi modern Japanese, The Feast Buffet, The Grand Café, Turf Grill, Cabo Mexican restaurant, Salt Lick Bar b-q, the Sand Bar poolside restaurant and a food court.

Retail Rendezvous by Leslie Frisbee
Las Vegas Magazine

One of the world's premier shopping destinations, Las Vegas continues to attract high-end designers, luxury brands and industry leaders to its famed Strip. This week more than 50,000 attendees from nearly 60 countries are expected to sashay into town for the International Council of Shopping Center's ReCon, which is the largest retail real estate conference in the world.

Miracle Mile Shops

Having recently celebrated its first anniversary, the renovations at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort have put retail center stage. The Aladdin Hotel, once a classic resort where Elvis and Priscilla Presley wed in 1967, was imploded in 1998, rebuilt in 2000 and rebranded in 2007 as Planet Hollywood – complete with a shopping experience fit for a star.

Formerly Desert Passage, Miracle Mile Shops transformed a Middle Eastern bazaar theme into a sleek, contemporary design. The modern space, which includes Brazilian walnut and slate flooring, 16 hand-beaded Swarovski crystal chandeliers, an electrifying fountain and laser show, is a pristine fusion of Hollywood glamour and Vegas glitz.

"The new design is much cleaner, more open and showcases the merchandise, not the architecture," said Wendy Albert, senior director of marketing for Miracle Mile Shops.

Anchored by Trader Vic's and Hawaiian Tropic Zone, the sexy exterior includes two patios with Strip views, prime for people-watching. Stripside escalators and colossal LED screens entice visitors into the trendy space, where they are greeted by a wall that welcomes them in more than 160 languages.

Miracle Mile, whose name is a nod to the premier retail districts in Los Angeles and Coral Gables, Fla., and the "miracles" that can happen in the casino, boasts 1.2 miles of retail and entertainment space with 170 retailers and 15 restaurants. The renovations have lured in major players, including some first-to-market boutiques, such as H&M, Ben Sherman and True Religion Brand Jeans. "Through the whole process, our numbers continue to increase in sales and traffic because of the retailers we are bringing in," Albert said.

And Miracle Mile Shops caters to the total experience. "Our guests can come here, buy something to wear for dinner, attend one of the three theaters we have in the center and make it a full experience without having to leave the property," Albert added.

Consider also the built-in exposure that Planet Hollywood brings, including Miss America, Miss USA and major movie premieres, and you have a blockbuster. And with the International Council of Shopping Centers annual ReCon in town, the journey from ancient trade route to Miracle Mile Shops' red carpet glitz has again put Vegas' retail scene in the spotlight. 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. 702.866.0710

Reel Awards planning to break hip-swiveling record by Adrian Zupp/Las Vegas Magazine

What is immensely entertaining, aims to have more than 147 Elvises (or Elvi!) in tow and is headed for Las Vegas? The 2008 Reel Awards, that's what.

Mark May 25 on your calendar right now because you don't want to miss the Reel Awards: The only awards show honoring the world's top celebrity impersonators and tribute artists. And this year – the awards' second in Las Vegas – is extra special. The mission: To assemble the largest number of Elvis impersonators to sing at one time.

The record is 147 and held by a small town in Australia, of all places. So how do you get so many Elvi together?

"I have over 80 on file and there are probably more than 10,000 in the United States," said Janna Joos, who co-founded the awards 17 years ago with her sister Alana. "And we won't stop at 148."

But the awards are more than the sum of their Elvi. Attendees will also get a gander at such faux celebs as Robert De Niro, Cher, Bono, Brooks & Dunn, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, John Travolta and Alice Cooper.

It will be an utter gala at the Imperial Theater at the Imperial Palace with awards being handed out for Best Actor/Actress, Best Television Performance, Rising Star and Lifetime Achievement.

"There'll also be a red carpet," Joos said. "And you never know who might show up. Sometimes you get a real celebrity mixed in there – it's actually a good place for them to hide!"

The awards are part of the four-day, eighth annual Celebrity Impersonator Convention, also being held at Imperial Palace.

The 2008 Reel Awards

Viva Las Vegas by Matthew Miller/Forbes Magazine

Ultimate fighting championship is evidently the Fertittas' most valuable asset, but the brothers spend the majority of their time running Station Casinos, their family's gambling outfit. The duo took the company public in 1993, then saw its shares languish for years before racing from $20 in 2003 to $75 in late 2006. Then the Fertittas took Station private for $9 billion in cash and assumed debt.

Why go private? "To get away from Wall Street," says Frank Fertitta III, the company's chief executive. "The public markets never got our business, and we were tired of worrying about earnings every quarter. We're casino operators but also real estate developers. We want to develop at our own pace."

What could be less Vegas?
Psychics pack ’em in by focusing on loss, pain, death and grief. By: Joe Brown/Las Vegas Sun

Las Vegas is famously otherworldly. The whole reason for the place is getting away from it all, going out of your head.

This is the Oblivion Express: Suffused with drink and dazzle, most of the Strip’s entertainment offerings are designed to distract, make you forget your woes — make you forget you’re human.

But a recent apparition on the Strip’s entertainment landscape does just the opposite. It puts your mind on your sorrows, forces you to remember.

Psychic headliners John Edward and Sylvia Browne, materializing monthly in sold-out engagements at the Flamingo and Excalibur respectively, summon the very things people come to Vegas to escape, or at least forget for a weekend. Dead children. Abuse. Suicide. A litany of symptoms, from pulmonary edemas to cancer. And on and on, for up to $175 a head.

There’s nothing else on the Vegas entertainment landscape to remind audiences of the reality of being human. (Well, maybe the “Bodies” exhibit at the Tropicana, but even there the preserved female corpse is wearing high heels.)

Rat Pack reveled in Vegas; revered by the world.
By: Mary Manning/Las Vegas Sun

It’s quarter to three, there’s no one in the place

Except you and me

So set ’em up Joe,

I’ve got a little story I think you should know…

After the losing dice were tossed, a high roller sitting ringside and sipping a drink on the house could empathize with Frank Sinatra's song floating through the darkness of the Copa Room.

The Man, the Chairman of the Board, and his music made magic, helping people forget their troubles.

Those pangs of loss (lost cash or lost love) evaporated in an era when Frank, Dean, Sammy, Peter and Joey came to the Sands, "A Place in the Sun,” on the Las Vegas Strip.

As improbable as this elegant quintet’s launch in the desert seems, the Rat Pack attracted an avalanche of followers around the world in the early 1960s.

Showtime: How Sin City evolved into ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World’
By: Ed Koch,Mary Manning and Dave Toplikar/Las Vegas Sun

Today’s visitors heading south on the Las Vegas Strip are splashed with glittering enticements that beckon them to see world-class performances and masterful sets, featuring A-list celebrities.

But go back six decades, sweep away the jumbo video boards and electric neon.

Before central air conditioning and eye-catching neon lights, the Las Vegas Strip entertainment scene started in the western-themed El Rancho Vegas, a motor lodge located on Highway 91.

When the El Rancho opened during World War II, it featured a gas station, $5-a-night rooms, a casino, and a swimming pool just 50 feet off the highway. California celebrities flocked to the desert oasis marked by a neon-lit windmill.

Osmonds, Osmonds everywhere.
Donnie and Marie plan summer stop before Flamingo run; brothers also to visit. By Jery Fink/Las Vegas Sun.

When the Osmond clan invades Europe this month, it’s going to look like D-Day.

“There aren’t that many of us,” Jimmy Osmond, 45, says.

Only 70 or so. A small army, to be sure.

The two-month tour of Europe and Asia — which opens Sunday in Belfast, Northern Ireland — is a celebration of 50 years in the limelight for the Osmonds. Most of the family is going — by plane, not by ship.

Donny and Marie (who perform individually and as the sibling duo) will lead the troupe, which includes brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay and Jimmy (who perform as The Osmond Brothers — not to be confused with their children, who perform as The Osmonds Second Generation).

“Getting all of us together is a mess,” Jimmy Osmond says. “Our families have grown since we started 50 years ago.”

FAMOUS DAVE’S Opens New Restaurant on May 27 With traditional “passing of the fire” ceremony.

With a time-honored ceremony steeped in Native American tradition, Famous Dave’s barbeque restaurant will open on May 27 at 4390 Blue Diamond Road at Arville.  To signify the grand opening, executives of Famous Dave’s will conduct a long established “passing of the embers” ceremony and a “rib” cutting (a twist on the traditional ribbon cutting) alongside the cheers of the community and members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) of Southern Nevada.

In the tradition of Dave Anderson’s (the founder of Famous Dave’s) Native American heritage when embers were passed from one tribe to the next as a sign of prosperity and good luck, the “Passing of the Fire” ceremony begins at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, May 27.  The ember ceremony began at the first Famous Dave’s BBQ which opened in 1995 in Hayward, Wisconsin, and has continued to this day.  At this opening, embers will be brought from the BBQ smoker of the most recent restaurant opening and passed on to the Blue Diamond location as a continued sign of success.  During the May 27 event, embers will be placed inside the new BBQ smoker to ignite the first flame for the new restaurant.

To further commemorate the grand opening Famous Dave’s will donate $1 of every bottle of barbeque sauce or merchandise sold, at any one of the three Famous Dave’s restaurants, to the MDA association of Southern Nevada.  As a regional sponsor of the MDA, Famous Dave’s has previously participated in fundraising events for the MDA. Famous Dave’s will also partake at the First Annual Southern Nevada Harley Davidson Ride for Dreams event, to benefit the MDA Association taking place June 7 at the Town Square center.

The Time Reunite at Flamingo Las Vegas.
All-time greatest party band together again for the first time in 18 years.

Flamingo Las Vegas presents special limited dates of legendary Minneapolis funk band, The Time, June 24 - July 5 and July 29 - Aug. 2.  These exclusive performances mark the first time the original band members have performed together in 18 years, following their acclaimed appearance at this year’s Grammy Awards.

The master of cool, Morris Day, will reunite with his original band mates, valet Jerome Benton, drummer Jellybean Johnson, bass player Terry Lewis, guitarist Jesse Johnson and keyboard artists Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir to perform all of their classic hits including, "Jungle Love," "Get it Up," “777-9311,” "The Bird," “Cool” and “The Walk”.

The Time has carved out a unique niche in musical history since their beginnings in Minneapolis with the legendary artist, Prince. The band quickly developed a loyal fan base in the early 1980’s as a result of their distinct sound, energetic vocals, witty lyrics, infectious dance moves and sizzling live shows. In 1984, The Time appeared as Prince’s rivals in the widely popular movie “Purple Rain,” catapulting the group to worldwide fame. From 1981 to 1984, The Time recorded three groundbreaking albums, “The Time”, “What Time Is It?” andIce Cream Castle”. These albums forever changed the face of music and put the fun into funk like never before.

In 1990, after several years on hiatus as a group, the original members of the band felt that the timing was right to begin recording again. The result was the album “Pandemonium” which sold over a million copies and contained the #1 hit “Jerk Out”. The reunion; however, was short lived and the group once again went their separate ways. The 18 year hiatus from recording and performing ended when the band was invited to perform on “Music’s Biggest Night”, the 50th annual Grammy Awards telecast.

“In order for us to perform again it had to be all of the original members,” said Jimmy Jam, “Once that was set, it wasn’t a hard decision because it doesn’t get any bigger or better than the Grammys”.

The spectacular performance, viewed by over 40 million people around the world, included an appearance by Rihanna and featured the classic song, “Jungle Love”.  The show-stopping moment had fans around the world wondering what the band would do next.

“After the Grammys the fan response was so overwhelming we knew we had to do it again” said Jesse Johnson. Jerome Benton added, “But we had to wait for just the right moment and place to perform together again.”

Terry Lewis agrees, “The timing needed to be perfect, the energy needed to be right and the venue needed to be in the center of it all.” And the man himself, Morris Day, sums it up stating, “I figured when Elvis made his long awaited return to the stage he did it in Vegas, so if it was good enough for the king, it’s cool with me!”

Tickets for The Time are on sale now. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. Ticket prices are $150, $125, $75, and $65 (plus tax and fees).  To purchase tickets, visit the Flamingo Box Office, call (702) 733-3333, (800) 221-7299 or go online to www.flamingolasvegas.com.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Bubble' busts at Planet

Ah, life in Sin City. While Mirage executives ponder the image branding of a puppet show on their outside marquee, a child-friendly bubble show folds its tent just before summer vacation season.

Fan Yang's "Gazillion Bubble Show" has wrapped up its afternoon run in magician Steve Wyrick's theater at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The show's Web site says the last bubble popped on May 11, with wording that suggests finality.

However, theater manager Robyn Spencer says the show is dark for "an indefinite period" and might make it back by year's end, after spending the summer touring overseas.

Terry Fator at The Mirage By Mike Weatherford

Next year, the Mirage will test the long-term drawing power of "America's Got Talent" ventriloquist Terry Fator, tapped as Danny Gans' replacement. Gans will be across the street at Wynn Las Vegas, and it will be a fun showdown.

One big difference is that Gans' outdoor sign photo won't include puppets. I pointed out to Mirage president Scott Sibella that I recently questioned in a column if tight economic times mean a return to the tried-and-true family market.

And Sibella was a good guy for perspective, since I first interviewed him next door at Treasure Island, when the outdoor pirate show was being revamped to drop the "Yo" from its "Yo-ho," becoming the hip-hopping "Sirens of T.I."

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS

Wednesday series features top performers.
If you want to keep cool and listen to some cool jazz, you might want to drop into the Green Valley Ranch Resort, which is celebrating summer by bringing the great sounds of jazz by popular local and national jazz performers to its backyard pool. The jazz series will run every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition, there will be a new Sunday brunch at Terra Verde Italian Cuisine inside the resort, with live music every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., featuring music by Calvin Brooks.

Here are the dates and performers for the jazz series: May 28, The Release All Stars; June 4, The Brothers Ali; June 11, Michael Ward; June 18, Gipsy Knights; June 25, national artist Lao Tizer. And if you're not familiar with Calvin Brooks, this jazz guitarist and singer hails from Detroit but has been a Las Vegan since 1999, and has worked with Aretha Franklin and Lou Rawls. All of these jazz musicians are great, so if you get a chance when you're in town, drop by and listen. While you're there, you might even win some money (yeah, right!).

Some big changes taking place downtown at the Four Queens. In a bid to attract gamblers, the casino is offering some new games, like Progressive Fortune Pai Gow Poker. Here's how it works. Players make a standard Pai Gow wager and have the option to bet on the Fortune Bonus wager. Players making at least a $5 Fortune wager qualify for Envy Bonus payouts, which wins whenever someone else at the table receives a four-of-a-kind or higher. The Four Queens is the only downtown casino and one of only two casinos in Las Vegas to offer the progressive version of the game, in which a $1 wager on the Progressive makes the player eligible to win 100 percent of the Progressive Jackpot, which starts at $10,000. Not too shabby.

Other games offered are California Draw Poker where players are dealt four cards with one card dealt face up. The dealer receives five cards but must use the face-up card to solve his/her hand. Players are allowed to discard and draw one new card in order to make the best four-card poker hand. Any four-of-a-kind pays 300 to 1 plus an ante bonus. The Four Queens is the only casino in Las Vegas to offer the game.

If you decide to play World Championship Three Card Poker you could win an entry into a satellite event for a chance at a seat in the $1.2 million World Championship Tournament in December.

And speaking of games, the Rio has launched a new card game called Asia Poker. Based on an ancient Chinese game called "13," Asia Poker combines the elements of the increasingly popular Pai Gow Poker and the speed and excitement of the American game of Heads Up Poker.

To play Asia Poker, each player at the table is dealt seven cards, which the player arranges to make three hands: a one-card hand, a two-card hand and a four-card hand. Each player sets their hands in a ranking order, arranging the cards into a high hand, medium hand and low hand. When setting the three hands, the four-card high hand must be equal to or higher in rank than the two-card medium hand, and the two-card medium hand must be equal to or higher in rank than the one-card low hand.

A player wins if any two of the player's three hands (high, medium or low hand) are higher in rank than any of the dealer's corresponding three hands (high, medium or low hand). If any one of the player's three hands is identical in rank to the corresponding hand of the dealer this is a tie. Ties are also called "copy hands," and the dealer wins all copy hands.

Talk about turning a win on a TV show into a life-changing gig. Terry Fator, winner of NBC's "America's Got Talent," has signed a five-year deal, with an option for an additional five years, to perform at The Mirage. The deal is said to be worth $100 million for this puppeteer with the celebrity impressions. He will replace Danny Gans when Gans moves to Wynn Las Vegas. In fact, the Danny Gans Theatre will be changed to the Terry Fator Theatre. Fator will perform five shows a week beginning in February 2009. Tickets go on sale later this year. In the understatement of the year, Fator said, "This is an unbelievable dream come true."

If your wife/girlfriend is having a birthday soon and you want to impress her, you might want to book a suite at the Bellagio, which has just spent $60 million on a suite redesign. Located in the Bellagio Tower, the dramatic new look of seven suite types — Salone, Bellagio, Cypress, Tower, Penthouse, Lakeview and Grand Lakeview — combines high styling with high-tech amenities. I'm talking beauty, elegance and luxury. Of course, at rates ranging from $450 to $8,000 a night, would you expect anything less? You can reserve one by calling (888) 987-6667 or by going online to www.bellagio.com.

Don't know how 2008 will be, but last year was another good one for Nevada casinos as they reported their highest net income ever — $2.3 billion. And guess where all that money came from? On the down side, the big resorts reported $123 million in bad-debt expenses. They also paid out $2.1 billion in comps to high-rollers.

If you're coming into town expecting to see Toni Braxton, you're going to have to wait until at least June 6 when she's expected to return to the Las Vegas Flamingo. It will be good to have her back as she puts on a great show in my opinion.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Country acts rely on casinos.

That Trace Adkins video for "I Got My Game On" may coincidentally nail the attitude toward country music in Las Vegas.

In the comic video, Adkins is a rhinestone cowboy decked out in his Armani suit, "my custom-made (cowboy) hat, my alligator boots" and tons of bling.

Adkins sings a different tune today for the Academy of Country Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden arena. He wasn't actually nominated for any award.

Neither was the MGM Grand Garden. Or the Mandalay Bay Events Center, honored in the past as the Academy's Casino of the Year.

NORM: Siegfried & Roy in talks for show. By Norm Clarke

Siegfried & Roy's return to the stage at next year's "Keep Memory Alive" fundraising event could end up as a television special.

Larry Ruvo hinted at a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Rio on Thursday that exploratory talks have been scheduled with a national cable network.

Siegfried & Roy announced in February that they will come out of retirement for one night to help fund the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute, which is being built downtown. When completed, it will be a national center for the prevention, early detection and treatment of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, ALS and memory disorders.

Lou Ruvo was the longtime owner of the Venetian, a popular now-closed Italian restaurant on Sahara that introduced pizza to Las Vegas, according to Larry Ruvo, Lou's son.

Larry Ruvo, senior managing director for Southern Wines & Spirits, also told the crowd of 300 that he's been contacted by a company that owns one of the powerhouse TV networks. The corporate giant has expressed an interest in taking a significant funding role in the institute, Ruvo said.

NEWEST `CRAZY GIRLS’ DANCER BRENDA GREW UP IN LAS VEGAS

Tall green-eyed blonde with 3.7 GPA says her biggest hero is Oprah Winfrey.

Brenda Salathe attended a performing arts school in Las Vegas and is the newest member of the famous “Crazy Girls” at the Riviera Hotel & Casino.

Brenda is 5-foot-8 and has green eyes and blonde hair. She was born in Portland, Oregon and her family moved to California when she was 5 and then on to Las Vegas at age 8. She said, “This is my first show that I’ve danced in on The Strip. I was working as a salon concierge when I found out about the opportunity. It was such a coincidence that the salon’s owner is married to the manager of `Crazy Girls’ and this is what I trained for at Las Vegas High School for Performing Arts.”

Brenda said, “I’m moving in two weeks to the Northwest part of Las Vegas and buying a pre-owned condo while the real estate market is so hot for buyers. I feel like I’m throwing my money away on rent and don’t live in the best of areas.”

She said, “I have a black cat that keeps me company. I think all of the `Crazy Girls’ have pets and we’re all going to be featured in POP Magazine. The theme of the pictorial is `interesting Las Vegas people and their pets due out June 1.’”

She said, “I have two sisters and my mom works as a medical biller. My sister graduated from college. She works as a waitress until something comes up.”

Brenda said, “My friends would tell you that I’m outgoing and brutally honest. That’s my personality but I love working with the `Crazy Girls.’ I’m young and have a lot to accomplish still. My favorite musical artist is Lilly Allen.”

Brenda continued, “Oprah is my hero because she does so much for people and has such a good heart. So naturally I’m a big fan of her television show. My favorite film is `Empire Records.’ It’s about the employees of an independent music store who learn about each other as they try to stop the store from being taken over by a large chain.  My favorite book since I’m a student of psychology at the community college is `Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.’ I’m a night owl and sleep in.”

The talented comic-magician Tony Douglas (tonydouglasmagic.com) emcees the show. The Crazy Girls Showroom is on the 2nd floor of the Mardi Gras Plaza of the Riviera Hotel. Call (702) 794-9433 or come to the Riviera Box-Office. See crazygirlsLasVegas.com for further information. Click on www.rivierahotel.com/

Rare Komodo Dragon Arrives at Shark Reef Aquarium

With a fearsome reputation, approximately 60 dagger-like, serrated teeth, deadly saliva and piercing razor-sharp claws, the Komodo Dragon will call Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay home beginning June 20.

“We are excited to welcome such a rare and endangered predator as the Komodo Dragon to Shark Reef Aquarium,” said Brian Robison, the facility’s Executive Director.  “Guests will have the thrilling experience of being within arm’s length to observe the powerful nature of this fascinating creature.”

The Komodo Dragon will join an impressive group of animals at Shark Reef Aquarium, a 90,560-square-foot, predator-based aquarium – the only one of its kind in North America.

Having no known predators in the world, the Komodo Dragon is the most deadly of all lizards.  With just one bite, virulent saliva containing about 50 kinds of bacteria reacts with the prey’s blood. Special enzymes in the saliva prevent blood from clotting, causing the infection to spread and ultimately leading to the death of the prey.

Komodo Dragons are immune to the saliva properties of other Komodo Dragons.  After particularly brutal battles, scientists have observed Komodo Dragons do not display any ill effect from the saliva-filled bites nor do they demonstrate life-threatening injuries from the deep claw marks.  Because of the unique properties, their blood and saliva are being studied for use in anti-coagulation and antibacterial medications.

A relative of the Water Monitor, the Komodo Dragon can reach up to 10 feet in length and can weigh up to 200 pounds.  With a world population of less than 5,000, the largest and heaviest lizard species lives on the Southeast islands of Indonesia, including their primary habitat, Komodo Island.  As part of the conservation effort, 75 Komodo Dragons are in human care at zoos and aquariums throughout North America.

These facilities, including Shark Reef Aquarium, work to ensure the survival of the species through education, awareness and breeding.  Since its debut in 2000, Shark Reef Aquarium has become a must-see Las Vegas attraction and educational facility, where adults and children alike can enjoy and learn about the more than 2,000 divinely dangerous animals including sharks, crocodiles, sawfish and piranhas.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is open daily, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15.95 for adults and $10.95 for children; children four and under are free.

Las Vegas Casinos Offering Deals By Bill Burton

It looks as though the economic slump has finally caught up with of the Las Vegas casinos. The Wall Street Journal reported in Thursday's edition that gambling revenues have dropped for the second straight month and visitation is down again. To counteract the decline in business the casinos are starting to offer discounted room rates and packages. Major casinos on the Las Vegas strip are offering special room rates under $100 a night.

Spring is a very good time to visit Las Vegas because the weather is very comfortable, the pools are open and in the past the casinos have been able to get top dollar for the room rates. This year however the casinos are not filling the rooms due to people cutting back on their recreational spending so they're starting to offer the discounts.

Wayne's World

“Crazy Girls” has a few new dancers and is filling the house at the Riviera.
There is little doubt that this is “Las Vegas’ Sexiest Revue.” It might be best to advise your passengers to stay out of the strip clubs. Another beating lawsuit
was filed against a club.

When it comes to the most “hilarious” show on the Las Vegas Strip one might think it’s a comedy club. Truth be known it’s “An Evening at La Cage” where the top celebrity female impersonators extraordinaire make light of the superstars.

The majority of the audience is Middle America. The show is PG-13. In a sea of new restaurants, Tommy Bahama – Tropical Café stands out at the new Town Square. The elegant and relaxing atmosphere was designed to pair the shopping and dining experience together. This restaurant is international – from Dubai to Canada they have sprung up throughout the world. The singular island-inspired dishes with tropical libations will draw you in like an oasis during your shopping day for lunch or dinner.

The new Town Square is what Las Vegas needed to complete the shopping and dining experience and will attract locals and visitors in a well thought-out location
on LV Blvd. S.

The Blue Martini on the 2nd floor at Town Square is another hit drinking establishment although they do serve food. This retro cocktail lounge for the singles crowd or after-work partiers will certainly need taxicabs to shuttle them home after a few too many of about 100 different types of martinis. You can be over 35 and not feel out-of-place in this upscale bar/club. With most martinis priced upwards of $12, you pay for the privilege of mingling with eligible singles in the bar’s sexy surrounds.
It’s busy every night and the “Happy Hour” is from 4-7 p.m. half-price.

The eateries on South Eastern Avenue are springing up right and left and to think it used to be a long stretch of desert in the ‘70s. The newest is Le Golosita Italian Trattoria (Pizzera-Bakery-Gelato Bar). They even have a take-out menu at 9500 S. Eastern. Besides excellent food and a menu to die for they have partnered with the I’m A Kid Foundation which supports helping children with medically related hair loss. The bakery is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Le Golosita features a pizzeria, bakery and gelateria offering baked-daily and homemade Italian specialties.

Sorry, to hear about the plight of Woldmarim Keba a taxicab driver while waiting in the Bellagio tunnel for a pickup one of five thugs hit him over the head with a beer bottle and he has been out of work since Oct. 18, 2007. Much more security is needed.

The Canyon Spa Ranch opens at Palazzo on May 1st to duplicate its sister property’s Canyon Spa Ranch at The Venetian. This is where you want to send your passengers for a sure thing whether it’s hairstyling or a day of spa pampering.

same amenities as their counterparts along with additional armoire storage in the sleeping area and dual sinks, a well-lit vanity, relaxing spa tub and separate walk-in shower in the bathroom.

Slot Reviews By Gayle Mitchell

1) Game of Life: Career Choices: Atronic. 86-96%. 3 spins.
There is now another version of the Game of Life based on the board game. The two wild symbols and triggers that are the base of the game are the diamond on reels 2 – 5 that subs for all but bonus symbols and the dollar symbol, a scatter wild that converts all symbols on a reel into wild symbols when it lands. When this occurs, each additional dollar symbol multiplies the jackpot up to 16 times.

Additionally, the main bonus event occurs when 3 Game of Life icons line up and your attention is turned to the top screen. You then start the spinning dial that selects from 20 options that include free multipliers, free spins or takes you to an extra bonus game.

Further, the game spaces of Take a Break or Choose Your Job will reward you with free games or multipliers while the game space of Business Trip will reward with bonus credits. Some versions provide a random Mystery Magic progressive jackpot. The Game of Life continues and slots player await the next version ‘on board’.

2) Hexbreaker 2: IGT. 88-98%.

1-2 spins. If you believe in lucky black cats, then you should test your luck for the big payoff, this slot offers. This game’s reel configuration allowing for 720 ways to win per spin is called MultiWay Xtra with 3 symbols on the outer reels, four symbols on reels 2 and 4 and five symbols on the middle reel. Betting can be as high as 500 credits/spin and your credits will mount when matching three symbols on adjacent reels, left to right. The base game wild symbol appears on all of the three middle reels while 3 or more black cats start 10 free spins that can be re-started during the initial round. There are many ways to ‘break the hex’ and bring on the lucky cats.

3) Lightning Sevens: Bally. 87-95%. 1-2 spins.

Bally’s does 7’s better than anyone else and this version is proof. Based on the popular Blazing 7’s, the pay table of blue and mixed 7 combinations will be familiar. At max bet, the blue 7’s pay 2000 coins while 7 mixed combos pay 1000 coins. The difference is the gold 7’s marked with a 7 and 3rd, 2nd or 1st on the third reel that award a progressive jackpot. The wins are as follows: 3rd=$20, 2nd=$100 and 1st=$1000. The simplicity of this game makes for fast play at ‘lightning speed’.

Toxic Audio Explained From Access Vegas.Com
By: D.W.Grant

“Toxic Audio,” what the heck is that?

It’s one of best small shows in Vegas; and at half the price its just as much fun as The Blue Man Group, moves with just as much energy as Gans or Newton, and delivers just as many laughs as a night out with the Second City comedy troupe.

So, what is it? It’s Voice, and all voice. Not a sound comes from the stage that isn’t produced by someone’s voice. Drums, guitars, sax, bass, and some mysterious musical modulations come out of the mouths and noses of these performers with such amazing clarity you can then understand why the promotional icon is a guy with a microphone for a head.

It’s five singers with no back up band or recorded tracks pumping out “Autumn Leaves” in English, French, German, Korean, Scat, and Pig Latin. Its Paul Sperrazza, a “human beat box,” tearing up the audience like a mix of Jim Carey, Jerry Lewis, and that guy who almost won American Idol last year. It’s also Rene Ruiz, the founder of the group, whose credits include “Forever Plaid,” delivering a unforgettable show to a cheering audience.

Oh and there are 4 other performers making it happen for the audience too; Christine Vienna, Tim Jones, and Heather Friedman, and the “sound guy. The sound guy gets his own song during the show and definitely deserves his own sentence in this review, his name is Shannon Brady. There is no band to coordinate but he’s does a heck of job keeping five very good singers in perfect balance.

Simple, but too big for the room, Toxic Audio has been playing a weird 5:30 pm slot at The Planet Hollywood’s V-Theatre for a few months or so. I’m glad I caught it early before word of mouth got out because this show is going to play at better times and tickets are going to get harder to get. Thank god Planet Hollywood is expanding the theatre!

Toxic Audio has been traveling the country and the world since it was discovered by Disney at the Orlando International Fringe Festival in the late 1990s. It played to packed houses at the Jazz Club in Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World, and set up off-Broadway in 2004, where they won the 2004 Drama Desk Award for “Unique Theatrical Experience.” It was crowned champion at the National Harmony Sweepstakes in California in 1996, and did a brief stint at The Luxor, here in Las Vegas, in 2005. Vegas now has its own Toxic Audio troop, including two original cast members, while other “Toxics” have to travel the country. Hurray for us!

You have to like a team of singers who can improv a beat box song about Pat and Debbie Boone and who will play “Jaws” with its audience. As a matter of fact the audience is almost the 6th player in the troop. Four or Five audience members are brought on stage at different times in the 70 minute show, and singers perform in the isles just a frequently.

Toxic Audio is family friendly too, mixing it up with TV themes from “Route 66? and “I Dream of Jeannie,” a better than The Muppets version of “Menomena,” and an eerie but beautiful surround-sound version of “Stand by Me.” They even “put the lime in the coconut” and make hacking and coughing sound lyrical. Some fresh beat box crash brings the kids back in and rounds out a great show built for everyone.

Some of these vocals are tracked on the Toxic Audio “Chemstry” CD along with other fun songs you didn’t hear in the show like “Easter Island Head” and “Paperback Writer,” the old Beatles fave, done the Toxic Audio way. Of course the CD is available after the show to those of us who didn’t get a free one for taking part in the performance.

It’s hard not to give a standing ovation to a show that already has you on your feet clapping and cheering. “Toxic?” No, I would much rather rate it “addictive.” I’m going back to see it again.

MAMMA MIA! Celebrates 2000th Performance

MAMMA MIA! marked another milestone as the longest-running Broadway musical on The Strip as the show celebrated 2,000 successful performances on Sunday, May 4 at the Mandalay Bay Theatre.  Slated to run through January 2009, MAMMA MIA! recently celebrated five record-breaking years in Las Vegas.

MAMMA MIA! sets the precedent for musicals in Las Vegas, as no other full-length Broadway show has ever enjoyed such enduring success on The Strip.  Based on the songs of ABBA, this smash hit musical continues to be adored by locals and tourists alike.

Since the show premiered in February 2003…

MAMMA MIA! has used 600 yards of spandex and more than 150,000 sequins to create costumes for The Dynamos

3,170 light bulbs have been replaced in the uniquely raked stage since production first began – more than likely due to damage caused by the disco-era platforms of The Dynamos

The show’s signature song, “Mamma Mia,” has been sung more than 4,600 times over the lifetime of the show

Seen by over 30 million people worldwide, and with three companies currently playing in North America, MAMMA MIA! has more productions playing around the world than any other current Broadway musical. The phenomenon that Liz Smith calls “The most popular musical in the world!,” has surpassed a gross of $2 Billion in worldwide box office sales.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values May 2008 from The Las Vegas Advisor.

1. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-2 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. Served at the Deli in the back of the casino, it comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. The retail price is $1.99, but if you present a Club 1906 players card to the cashier, the price drops to 99 cents. Joining the club is free, takes only a few minutes, and you save a dollar every time you avail yourself of this venerable downtown deal.

2. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 hours - $6.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island is the best-value meal deal in a city full of good-value meal deals. It’s a 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, which comes with salad, garlic green beans, choice of potato, and fresh microbrewed beer, all for $6.95. You can’t beat that with a stick.

3. Breakfast Special - 4 Locations - Midnight-11 am - $1.49
This $1.49 breakfast special is served from midnight to 11 am at the newly designated “Wild” Station casinos (Wild Wild West, Wildfire, Gold Rush, and Magic Star). At $1.49 for two eggs, two bacon or sausage, hash browns, and toast, it’s the best breakfast we’ve seen hereabouts in a long time.

4. Sign-Up Promotion - Hooters - Daily - Free
The Hooters promotion for signing up for the players club includes $100 in “free play”; this is a long shot, but worth the attempt. The big draws of the sign-up package, however, are a $25 matchplay and a free ticket to Bobby Slayton, for some raunchy but very funny comedy.

5. Hot Dog - Suncoast - 24 hours - 75¢
One of two great 75¢ dogs (the other is at South Point) served from a cart in the sports book. Add onions and kraut for no additional charge. The cart operates daily throughout the afternoon.

6. Magic Show - Greek Isles - Nightly - Free-$19.95
The World’s Greatest Magic Show at the Greek Isles is conducting a grand experiment, reducing the ticket price from $56 to $19.95. And that’s not the half of it: Each day the first 100 tickets are “free” (except for a $2 handling charge) and you don’t even have to go to the box office or put up a credit card over the phone to get them. If the first 100 haven’t been grabbed up when you call, you get the $3 tickets (up to four). Also, kids under 12 are free.

7. Buffet - Mirage - Daily - $13.95-$24.95
The Mirage Cravings buffet is convenient at center Strip, has better hours than most (opening for dinner at 3 pm), and features an expansive choice of gourmet offerings. Tour the large selection first to take in the variety: a half-dozen soups; dim sum, sushi, Chinese appetizers, and salads at the Asian station; antipasto bar; barbecue station; bagel fixin’s; made-to-order salads, extensive desserts; and more. The Mirage is the best-value gourmet superbuffet, with the highest quality and lowest prices, among Las Vegas’ best spreads.

8. The Comedy Stop - Tropicana - Daily - $19.95
The Comedy Stop has been at the Tropicana since 1990. The classic 300-seat showroom has a cool old-time feel to it, all the way down to the surviving maitre ‘d seating system, so $5 a head will probably get you up close (if you want to be in a comedian’s sights). Be forewarned: The comedy tends to be blue, if not just plain raunchy. Don’t go if you’re offended by language or non-politically correct subject matter. The three-comedian show and a drink cost $19.95, with no add-ons. And if you use the coupon that’s easy to find in many of the freebie mags, it’s only $14.95. Beers are $4.50.

9. Fontana Bar - Bellagio - Daily - $6
The Fontana Lounge at Bellagio is, perhaps, the greatest bargain-entertainment play at center Strip, if not along the entire Great Neon Way. It’s in the middle of one of the swankiest joints in town. The lounge surroundings are plush. The views (of the fountains) are spectacular. The entertainment is always top notch. And—get this—it’s a one-drink minimum to sit there for the evening, with the least expensive drinks in the $6 range. What a deal!

10. Prime Rib Special - Hard Rock - 4 pm-4 am - $9.99
The Hard Rock’s $9.99 all-you-can-eat prime rib special in Mr. Lucky’s coffee shop begins with a 13-ounce slice of prime rib cooked to order, plus a choice of soup or salad, baked potato, and veggies. If you’re still hungry, you can order additional slices served in six-ounce portions for as long as you can finish ‘em.
