Toxic substance ricin is found in LV hotel room
By LAWRENCE MOWER/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
A toxic biological agent was found in a suite on Valley View Boulevard near Flamingo Road on Thursday afternoon, but Las Vegas police said they were not searching for a suspect and nobody was harmed by the substance.
Ricin, a substance used for cancer research that has "no other medical use," was discovered about 3 p.m. by a man who was cleaning out a suite at the Extended Stay America at 4270 S. Valley View Blvd., Joseph Lombardo, a Las Vegas police captain and Homeland Security Bureau chief, said at a news conference about 9:30 p.m.
The man, who told police the toxic agent did not belong to him, took the powdery substance to the manager's office, and the manager called police.
Lombardo did not elaborate on who the man was.

NORM: It might be 'Live from Las Vegas'
Finish this sentence: "Live from Las Vegas, it's. …" If Lorne Michaels has his way, we'll be hearing "Live from Las Vegas, it's Saturday Night Live!"
According to the New York Daily News, Michaels is "in the early stage of talking" with a Las Vegas casino about moving a spinoff of NBC's long-time powerhouse program here.
Michaels, the show's co-creator, has been tossing around names such as Martin Short, Jon Lovitz and Julia Sweeney, according to the News.
He has discussed alum appearances by Chris Rock, Adam Sandler and Steve Martin, the newspaper said.

NORM:
'21' TO PREMIERE HERE
The world premiere of "21," the Kevin Spacey-produced gambling film that's set in Las Vegas, will be at ShoWest here in March.
Planet Hollywood Resort has landed the after-party.
The March 12 screening will be part of ShoWest. The largest annual motion picture industry convention will be held at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas hotels March 10-13.
Joining Spacey in Las Vegas will be cast members Laurence Fishburne, Kate Bosworth and Jim Sturgess.
Many scenes of "21" were shot at Planet Hollywood last year. Spacey bought the rights to the book, "Bringing Down the House" by Ben Mezrich. It's a true story of a team of MIT students who came up with a card-counting system to beat Las Vegas out of millions.
The "21" cast also will be honored at ShoWest's awards ceremony. Anne Hathaway will be named the female star of the year and Emile Hirsch the top male star. Awards also will go to Robert Downey Jr., Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Seth Rogen, Abigail Breslin, Christopher Nolan and producer Charles Roven.
David Mamet, Alan Ball and Helen Hunt will be honored for their films. Mamet will receive the ShoWest excellence in filmmaking award. Ball, the screenwriter for Oscar-winning "American Beauty," will be honored for his directing debut, "Towelhead." Hunt will be named breakthrough director of the year for "Then She Found Me."
ShoWest organizers are expecting appearances by Hathaway, Hirsch, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Christina Ricci and filmmakers George Lucas and Nolan, among others.

SHOW REVIEW: Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha and Martin Nievera.
Sending out an SOS: Martin Nievera joins Society of Seven as group begins looking for new home,
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
They almost waited too long to figure this out.
The Society of Seven is a tourist institution in Hawaii, but has battled for years to maintain a high profile on the Strip.
Martin Nievera, the son of one of the Society's original singers, likewise had tough luck trying to transfer his momentum to Las Vegas. He's "The Concert King" of the Philippines, and at 46, can still pack arenas there. But it has been hard to push beyond that base to a wider audience, and formal singers not named Groban or Buble aren't a hot commodity these days.
So, perhaps inevitably, these two have joined forces. Something Nievera has waited his whole life to do, he tells the audience. But guess what? The show closes at the Flamingo on April 13. Magician Nathan Burton takes over the afternoon berth in the showroom. SOS will go on tour and try to find a new home on the Strip in September.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
March 2008
The comic magician Amazing Johnathan announced he is moving The Amazing Johnathan Show to the Miracle Mile/Harmon Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino beginning on Saturday, March 1. I have lost count of the number of showrooms that Johnathan has been in…his has to be one of the more nomadic shows in town. He starts out strong at every venue and then something happens, and he is looking for his next oasis.
Opening at Sahara's Congo Room (where Johnathan just left…) is comedian Roseanne Barr. She will bring her everyday humor and observations to the Sahara beginning March 1st (imagine that…) Barr holds honors as one of the highest ranked comics, landing at #9 on Comedy Central's list of 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time. Barr appeared last year at the New York, New York hotel turning a two-week gig into several months.
The legendary Cher confirmed a long-lived rumor that she will headline in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace beginning May 6. She will be doing approximately 200 shows over a span of three years. Cher at The Colosseum, will feature countless chart-topping hits from the artist's unparalleled career. The show will be complemented by extraordinary choreography from Doriana Sanchez, state-of-the-art lighting and special effects and breathtaking costumes designed by the world-renowned fashion icon, Bob Mackie. With Bette Midler and Elton John already entrenched at the Colosseum, Caesars is certainly the place to be for legendary entertainers.
Barry Manilow is celebrating the third anniversary of his hit show, Manilow: Music and Passion at the Las Vegas Hilton. Manilow opened Music and Passion at the resort on February 23, 2005.
Another long time Vegas performer, Robin Sherwood, has suffered from kidney failure and is in need of a kidney transplant. It is once again time for our community to rally around another in order to help. The Robin Sherwood Foundation has organized a walk-a-thon to raise money. The walk will take place on March 8th. For anyone that is interested, please call 702.580.1856.
Master Mystifier Dixie Dooley returns to the Royal Resort this past month. He made front-page headlines in 1989 by hanging by his ankles upside down 100 feet above the ground and escaping from a regulation straitjacket in less than two minutes. The show promises to be filled with magic and laughter.
Sporting events will bolster the economy in Vegas this month. The race weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the 1st and 2nd will feature all of the big names of NASCAR. The Speedway fully expects to again sell out at this year's event. Over 140,000 fans will be on hand to watch the races—and big crowd always means big entertainment. The other big sports event is the March Madness tournament. Every sports book in town will be packed throughout the event. These events bring in a lot of people, and when the game is over, all these folks want something else great to watch.
There will be a St. Patrick's Day parade in Downtown Las Vegas, and every Irish Pub in the city will put on some sort of celebration.
Easter and the plethora of Spring Breaks always bring in a lot of people.
…In addition, remember that clocks spring forward March 9.
As far as all of the other entertainment goes…during the first weekend of the month…

A good age for a stripper.
At 20 — or 80 — burlesque legend Tempest Storm is ready to perform.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
You wouldn’t think that Pope Paul III and stripper Tempest Storm have anything in common.
But both were leap year babies, born on Feb. 29 — that extra day every four years slipped into the calendar at the end of February by Julius Caesar in 45 B.C. to make the years come out right over the long haul.
Of course Pope Paul III, born in 1468, is long gone. But Storm, born in 1928, is still very much alive, kicking and stripping whenever she has the opportunity. Her last gig was in June when she took it off during the Exotic World Burlesque Revue at the Plaza.
Today is leap day, and Storm turns 80.

A love affair with Las Vegas.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
Comedian Rita Rudner’s life is a smorgasbord of entertainment — novels, essays, plays, films, comic strips and talk shows, in addition to her stand-up engagement at Harrah’s.
For fans hungry for comedy, the former Broadway dancer will celebrate her 2,000th show in Las Vegas with a local PBS special March 17.
The show, “Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas,” will air nationally later and is being released as a DVD.
Las Vegas’ first lady of comedy has written a couple of novels, “Tickled Pink” and “Turning the Tables,” and a couple of books of essays, “Naked Beneath My Clothes” and her latest, “I Still Have It, I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It.”

Spot check: No palm greasing needed.
IRS-scrutinized tipping system not glimpsed at nightclub.
By Mike Trask/Las Vegas Sun
LAX is supposedly one of the hottest clubs in the coolest city. That’s what the hip club kids say. Tough to get in, helps if you grease a few palms along the way.
So how is it that the doorman let in an average-looking, less than rich, not so sharply dressed reporter for free Thursday?
Sun editors had sent the reporter clubbing Thursday night — well, Friday morning — to check out the scene and see how the uberpopular spots owned by Pure Management are faring in the wake of the much-discussed IRS raids at the company’s headquarters and two of the clubs it runs: LAX and Pure.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values: March 2008 from The Las Vegas Advisor.
1. Shrimp Cocktail – Golden Gate – 11 am-2 am – 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.
2. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 hours – $6.95
The Ellis Island steak dinner's price was raised a few months ago from $4.95 to $6.95, but honestly, no steak dinner in Las Vegas comes close to this deal, even at the new price. Plus, EI added a microbrew to the mix, so if you like a beer with your steak, it’s almost as if the price stayed the same. Welcome back, 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, salad, garlic green beans, and choice of potato.
3. The Comedy Stop – Tropicana – Daily – $19.95
The Comedy Stop has been at the Tropicana since 1990. The classic 300-seat showroom has a cool old-time feel to it, all the way down to the surviving maitre ‘d seating system, so $5 a head will probably get you up close (if you want to be in a comedian’s sights). Be forewarned: The comedy tends to be blue, if not just plain raunchy. Don’t go if you’re offended by language or non-politically correct subject matter. The three-comedian show and a drink cost $19.95, with no add-ons. And if you use the coupon that’s easy to find in many of the freebie mags, it’s only $14.95. Beers are $4.50.
4. Breakfast Special – 4 Locations – Mid.-11 am – $1.49
A great new $1.49 breakfast special is served from midnight to 11 am at the newly designated “Wild” Station casinos (Wild Wild West, Wildfire, Gold Rush, and Magic Star). At $1.49 for two eggs, two bacon or sausage, hash browns, and toast, this is the best breakfast we’ve seen hereabouts in a long time.
5. Steak Dinner – Gold Coast – 24 hours – $10.95
This 16-ounce T-bone comes with five sides (salad, vegetable, potato, onion rings, and baked beans) and a glass of beer goes for a mere $10.95. It's available 24 hours a day in the Monterrey Coffee Shop, but you have to be 21 to order it.
6. Sign-Up Promotion – Hooters – Daily – Free
The Hooters promotion for signing up for the players club has gotten a little better. The $100 in “free play” has been adjusted to yield a better return, while the package’s big draws—a $25 matchplay and a free ticket to Bobby Slayton—remain intact.
7. Buffet – Mirage – Daily – $13.95-$24.95
Planet Hollywood has raised the price of the Spice Market Buffet $1 to $25.99, which automatically disqualifies it from continuing its run in the Top Ten. For a replacement, we return to the Mirage Cravings spread. Another contender was the Rampart, which is a very good buffet for half the price, but we decided to stick with the gourmet product, based on what clearly seems to be our readers’ preference. Cravings is convenient at center Strip and is now $1 less expensive than the former Top Tenner from Planet Hollywood.
8. Lunch Comp – Crown & Anchor – 8 am-2:30 pm – $20
The lunch comp at the Crown & Anchor has also improved, given the pub’s new second location on Spring Mountain Rd. near Decatur. The property is a bit smaller than the original on E. Tropicana, but the freebies for video poker play are just as big.
9. Steak & Shrimp – Hard Rock – 24 hours – $7.77
We’re coming back with another old favorite, the Hard Rock’s steak & shrimp “Gambler’s Special.” This puts three steaks on the list, but this one’s a little different, since it shares top billing with three grilled shrimp and garlic mashed potatoes. It’s served in Mr. Lucky’s and still isn’t listed on the menu, but you can get it 24 hours a day.
10. Fontana Bar – Bellagio – Daily – $6
Based on our recent visit to Fontana Bar, we’re adding it to the Top Ten this month. Imagine: Bellagio on the bargain list! For a mere $6, you’re in the middle of one of the swankiest joints in town, ready for an evening of live music, plush surroundings, and one of the coolest views you’ll ever encounter.

Christie studied with classical guitar master Jeffrey Van and noted jazz professionals Mimi Fox and Randy Vincent. She also studied at the Jazz School in Berkeley. Her uncomplicated approach to jazz, her sense of swing, and appreciation for Brazilian music are evident in her arrangements. Classically trained bassist/cellist Mark Ruben has extensive credits in musical theater including Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His versatile approach brings a fresh sensibility to jazz. Danny Way was spotted at The Luxor with engineers developing a ramp that would make it possible for Danny to skate board down the side of the Luxor and jump the Sphynx in front.. In 1997 Danny broke the world record for the highest air on a skateboard, did a 12-foot kick flip, and became the first (and still only skateboarder) to drop out of a helicopter into a ramp. The Bomb Drop was born. Danny repeats the Bomb Drop in 1999 with a dislocated shoulder for MTV's Sports and Music Festival. Despite his injury he stays on to compete and win in the high air contest. In 2002 after numerous reconstructive surgeries Danny conceives the idea of the first Megaramp. Danny to sets a new Longest Distance Jumped record of 65 feet and a new Height Out Of A Ramp record at 18 feet, 3 inches. The second version of the Megaramp is built in 2003 at Point X Camp. Danny breaks two world records in one run. -Longest Distance Jumped at 75 feet and Height Out Of A Ramp (Backside Air) at 23.5 feet. June 19th, On July 9, 2005 Danny becomes the first person to jump the Great Wall of China on a skateboard . In 2005 Barely able to walk, Danny wins his second Big Air Gold Medal at X Games XI. Almost a year later in April of 2006 Danny drops 82 feet from the top of the guitar over the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas and takes Bomb Drop record to 24 feet. Now he is back in Las Vegas trying something new. Question: Why is Lance Burton so great? By Steve Harder-Kucera Admittedly one of the worst opening lines of a review, so let me explain. I searched in vain for an article that was written by magician Jonathan Pendragon. In it he discussed the various levels of art and artists. He wrote about artists who are basically just "covering", performing acts and styles that are just imitations of others'. He wrote of innovators, performers who push the boundaries and create altogether unique works. Of Lance Burton he wrote that, though he is not known for doing particularly innovative work, it's his sheer level of skill and perfection that makes him an artist of the highest order. You go to see Lance Burton to see magic performed absolutely flawlessly. What has changed the most since I saw his show ten years ago is that it now includes a few mysteries that are really quite innovative. Ironically, innovation in magic sometimes means performing an illusion that was developed more than a century ago but has since been forgotten. I rarely like to mention the actual effects that are presented in the shows I review, but two new effects warrant description. Burton does not appear in a puff of smoke at the beginning of his show. Instead he slowly dissolves into view, skeleton, then muscles and veins, and finally flesh. Later in the show he turns a woman into a gold statue. Again the transition is not immediate. The woman very gradually transforms into a gold statue right before your eyes. I'm sure that this is an old effect from over a century ago that I have read about but never seen performed live. There is really very little in magic that is genuinely new. Just as musicians have a finite number of chords and notes to work with, magicians have a fairly limited range of effects to draw on. It's how magicians and musicians combine these elements that creates, or doesn't create, a truly magical experience. Lance is very much a classicist of magic, and much of what you will see in his show was being presented on stage somewhere more than a century ago. But that doesn't in any way make his show less contemporary. It is absolutely state of the art, and presented in what is one of the most beautiful theatres in this city. The ads around town proclaim that "New Wonders Await". I first saw his show when he was the headliner at the old Hacienda, sometime in the mid to late 80's. Fortunately there are elements of his show that are still completely intact, especially his opening dove act that was the staple of his early career. Yet they've also added a significant amount of new material, so if you have seen his show in the past I can certainly recommend attending again. One notable new addition is a full scale theatrical production based on the old Twilight Zone television show. By full scale production I mean two-story tall sets, a plot line, characters delivering lines etc. The setting is a city street, and the set design itself is absolutely amazing with storefronts that bulge surrealistically, and live actors in the windows of every storefront. It's a full scale live-action cartoon with characters vanishing in and out of mailboxes and a phone booth in a bizarre story involving a criminal clown and an Irish cop. The cop thing is a cliche, but clowns are always bad news. That's a fact. Overall, the set design in the show is amazing, and reminiscent of how I imagine the old traveling magic shows of the late 1800's and early 1900's must have been. These were the days when magic shows traveled by train with truckloads of equipment and huge troupes of performers. Any kid can learn a few tricks and print the term "Master Magician" in a business card, but in Burton's case that phrase has a specific meaning. You can read about the history of Master Magicians as well as the Royal Dynasty of Magic on his website ( http://www.lanceburton.com ). When you see his show you are really witnessing a piece of history, and you are watching a great artist paint his masterpiece right before your eyes. Which brings me to the best news of all. Even after decades of performing on a nightly basis, you get no sense that this man is bringing anything less than his "A" game to the table. He is either the nicest man in show business or the best actor doing a nice guy act. The audience gets thanked, the crew gets thanked, the other performers are allowed to shine, and he handles volunteers with kindness. In perhaps the classiest five minutes of live theatre I have ever seen he pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket on which was written the names of several people in the audience who were having birthdays or anniversaries. He took the time to locate the people in the audience and congratulate them on the occasion. I'll conclude with a quick punch list of additional highlights. Juggler Mike Goudeau rocked the house as usual, as did a clowny assistant named Tom. The levitation of a woman is an absolute thing of beauty, extremely sexy but tasteful. His dove act in the opening of the show is something everyone should see live at least once. Again, why is he so great? Simply because is so great.

As you laugh with them, the 3 Redneck Tenors laugh at themselves in a musical redneck romp featuring tunes from Elvis to Puccini, soul to pop and country to opera. You join Billy Bob, Billy Joe and Billy Billee as they mix NASCAR with Beethoven, lite beer with Puccini and go from wearing overalls to dresses to tuxedoes. At the show's end, Dinny McGuire who is the show's story teller and outside the show is a professional ringmaster, joins the three tenors, who are really two tenors and a baritone, and sings equally well. Following the dinner and auctions, the celebration will move to the Mandalay Bay Events Center stage where Woods will introduce Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Wolfgang Van Halen and front man David Lee Roth for a rocking Van Halen concert.
“Tiger Jam XI will be incredible with Van Halen,” Woods said. “I’m thrilled to have this amazing group of diverse musical talent coming together for such a great cause. Van Halen is one of my favorite bands and I can’t wait to see them perform on the Tiger Jam stage.”

About Tiger Jam and the Tiger Woods Foundation
Since its creation in 1998, Tiger Jam has raised more than $10 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and select Las Vegas-based charities through its sold-out performances and one-of-a-kind auction items. Tiger Jam was created by the Tiger Woods Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering young people to reach their maximum potential. Proceeds from previous Tiger Jams have supported Child Haven, Center for Independent Living, Greater Las Vegas Inner City Games, Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas, GRAMMY in the Schools and The VH1 Save the Music Foundation.
Since its inception in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his father Earl, the Tiger Woods Foundation has reached an estimated 10 million young people through character development, career exploration, scholarships and grant making programs. Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation all share a similar mission of empowering young people to dream big and to set specific goals to achieve their dreams.
Specific programs of the Foundation include the Tiger Woods Learning Center, a youth-education facility and curriculum based in Anaheim, Calif. that soon will expand to Washington, D.C., and a nationwide character development program based on Earl D. Woods’ book entitled Start Something. The Tiger Woods Foundation recently launched the Fist Pump Challenge, an online program allowing young people to post videos of celebrating a personal goal or achievement. Launched in late January, the Fist Pump Challenge is designed to serve as a springboard to success and also will provide an opportunity for students to vie for an Earl Woods Scholarship to college. More information on the Tiger Woods Foundation and its programs can be found at www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org.

Harrah’s Goes A Little More Country With The Addition Of The Toby Keith Gaming Pit.
Inspired by the “Big Dog Daddy” of country music, Toby Keith, Harrah’s Las Vegas has put honky tonk on the casino floor by adding the country-themed Toby Keith gaming pit. The area features eight gaming tables and offers a unique mix of games including Casino War, Triple Shot, and Blackjack.
The pit is open from 12 p.m. to 4 a.m., seven days a week, and is located on the casino floor, adjacent to “Bill’s Bar,” a watering hole that also incorporates country elements in its décor. The Toby Pit is adjacent to the casino entrance, luring Strip foot traffic in with the sounds of contemporary country music and the promise of an exciting, unique gaming experience.
When guests saddle up to any of the gaming tables, they will notice custom Toby Keith table felts, leather “TK” branded chairs, and dealers in wild west uniforms. Female dealers wear western-themed, whiskey girl outfits complete with a Toby Keith belt buckle and a bustier, while male dealers sport more classic country
wear. Rustic barrels and guitar-lined walls round out the country-themed décor while high-definition televisions play continuous country music videos through an upgraded sound system.
“Night after night Toby’s restaurant is packed wall-to-wall with people dining, drinking and listening to live music,” said Don Marrandino, President of Harrah’s Las Vegas. “We decided to carry that energy onto the casino floor and offer guests great music, popular games, and a roadhouse vibe.”
Toby Keith has been a part of the Harrah’s family since May of 2005 when he opened his famed restaurant, Toby Keith’s: I Love This Bar & Grill, inside Harrah’s Las Vegas. Since its inception, the country hot spot has been a monumental success with hotel guests.

Where art thou Lady Luck?
By: Benjamin Spillman
There was an important anniversary this month in downtown Las Vegas, but don't feel bad if you didn't send flowers.
Feb. 12 marked two years since the Lady Luck's owners shut down the hotel-casino, displacing nearly 700 workers and leaving one of downtown's most visible properties a lifeless shell.
A lot of behind-the-scenes maneuvering has taken place to get the Lady Luck up and running again, but there is very little visible progress to show for it.
