Monte Carlo update from The Las Vegas Sun

Here’s the afternoon update from MGM Mirage on the Monte Carlo, which sustained damage last Friday in a rooftop fire. Straight from the company’s statement:

While an opening date for Monte Carlo has not yet been determined, in order to minimize inconvenience to our guests, all Monte Carlo guest reservations are being relocated to other MGM MIRAGE hotels through next week. We will continue to update the relocation schedule as more information becomes available and a reopening timetable is determined.

Incoming guests who do not already have their new hotel information are asked to call the Guest Hotline at (888) 395-0776.

All events booked in Monte Carlo meeting and convention facilities are being relocated through next week. We have successfully relocated more than 100 meetings and events scheduled at Monte Carlo, placing them primarily in space at other MGM MIRAGE properties. All Monte Carlo price commitments to convention groups are being honored at the new properties. Meeting clients with questions are also asked to call the Guest Hotline.

Due to the volume of business and capacity at other facilities, some events have been relocated with the cooperation of other Strip resort companies. MGM MIRAGE has received excellent cooperation from neighboring hotels during this effort and is very grateful for the support.

Master Magician Lance Burton, who performs in the Monte Carlo showroom, was on property today and visited with Monte Carlo employees over the lunch hour. Mr. Burton spent more than an hour in the Monte Carlo Employee Dining Room thanking employees for their hard work during this difficult time, performing magic and signing autographs.

All Lance Burton performances at Monte Carlo are canceled for the time the hotel is closed.

Hundreds of workers are on site and remediation efforts are proceeding around-the-clock to restore areas of the hotel impacted by the fire and fire suppression.

Monte Carlo employees continue to play an integral role in our efforts on site, preparing for the hotel’s reopening. Employees are asked to continue calling the Employee Hotline (702-693-7005) on a daily basis to determine if they are needed to report for their shift at the hotel.

MONTE CARLO FIRE FORCES OUT THOUSANDS.
Strip resort remains closed after rooftop blaze.

By BRIAN HAYNES, LAWRENCE MOWER and JENNIFER ROBISON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Columns of black smoke loomed over the Strip on Friday as flames burned atop the Monte Carlo, forcing thousands of people to evacuate and stirring memories of Las Vegas' darkest day.

The fire started just before 11 a.m. on the upper reaches of the 32-story hotel. Fueled by highly flammable construction foam, the flames quickly spread along the building's facade while firefighters standing on the roof and hanging out hotel room windows attacked them with water.

"It started with a little smoke, and I thought it was, like, kitchen smoke," said Angel Hernandez, who works at a nearby kiosk on the Strip. "The next thing I saw was the black smoke and I went, 'That's not the kitchen.' "

The plumes of smoke soon attracted hundreds of onlookers, who craned their necks and snapped pictures with camera phones from the crowded sidewalks on Las Vegas Boulevard. Meanwhile, news helicopters swirled overhead, capturing live footage of the growing conflagration that conjured images of the deadly MGM Grand fire in 1980 that killed 87 people.

MONTE CARLO FIRE: Stories on the Strip

Spectators mingled with evacuees as the primal sight of flames and smoke out-stripped the Strip itself. For some, the fire evoked images from deadly casino fires in 1980 and 1981. Others looked up and saw in the flames their own dumb luck, good or bad.

MONTE CARLO FIRE: Officials: Workers at fault.
Hot metal triggered blaze at resort, investigators say.

By BRIAN HAYNES/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

County fire investigators blamed flying molten metal and a lack of safety measures by construction workers for last week's blaze atop the Monte Carlo resort, officials said Thursday.

Workers for Las Vegas-based Union Erectors were using a hand-held torch to cut corrugated steel for a rooftop walkway when the hot metal, called slag, triggered the fast-moving fire that spread across the upper reaches of the 32-story Strip hotel, according to a county statement.

The workers tried to put out the flames with extinguishers before they spread to flammable foam on the facade and sent columns of black smoke into the sky Jan. 25. The flames forced thousands of guests and workers to evacuate the 3,000-room resort, which remained closed Thursday for repairs.

County investigators, with help from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, determined the workers failed to take basic safety precautions and did not have the necessary permit for performing "hot work," which includes cutting and welding with a torch.

NOTABLE LAS VEGAS AREA HOTEL FIRES
http://www.lvrj.com/news/14450902.html

Violations found in inspections of hotel
By JOAN WHITELY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Nevada OSHA found violations at the Monte Carlo, which appear to be related to safe emergency exiting, during separate inspections in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Stephen Coffield, in the state agency's Green Valley office, declined to comment on the applicability of those inspections to circumstances of Friday's fire at the Monte Carlo, during which all occupants of the building were evacuated. He is acting chief administrative officer of Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

In March, the agency recorded two nonserious violations against the hotel, according to the federal OSHA Web site. OSHA levied no fines against the hotel in connection with the case, which it had opened in January 2007. The federal coding suggests the violations involved some aspect of exit routes, emergency action plans or fire prevention plans.

The Monte Carlo also incurred three nonserious violations, with no fines, from OSHA in two other cases that were opened in March 2005 and September 2003.

The OSHA web site also shows an OSHA inspection of the Monte Carlo as recently as Jan. 10. That case was opened and closed in a single day, with no violations found. A total of eight OSHA inspections have taken place at the Monte Carlo since September 2003, according to an online database.

Tourism slump may be afoot
Displaced guests should have no trouble finding lodging.

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN /LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Friday's fire at the Monte Carlo resort may have exposed a developing slump in the Las Vegas tourism market.

The fire means the 3,000-room Monte Carlo is uninhabitable for now, but guests should have no trouble finding alternate lodging.

Judging by the number of hotels with available rooms and low prices, demand on the Strip is slow.

"There is just a lot of availability," said Michael Zaletel, operator of the hotel-booking site www.i4vegas.com. "I've never seen it like that."

Zaletel said his site had rooms at Sahara for $49 per night this weekend and at Harrah's for $88 nightly. The hotel Web site www.Vegas.com had rooms at the Luxor for $100 per night.

MONTE CARLO FIRE: Thousands return for belongings.
Hotel-casino deemed safe and habitable, but not ready to reopen.

By JOHN EDWARDS and LAWRENCE MOWER/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The Monte Carlo was deemed safe and habitable by county inspectors Saturday, but concerns over the possibility of debris falling from the hotel-casino's charred exterior kept officials from signing off on it reopening. Clark County Building Department chief Ron Lynn said debris could fall on areas where people might be.

"Since all the exits cannot be used, we're going to keep the casino and the hotel closed at this point," he said.

Lynn said he will require Monte Carlo officials repair the blackened areas of the hotel's exterior or find a way to prevent debris from falling before he allows it to reopen. He estimated that with the right materials and manpower the work needed to reopen could be done in "a day and a half."

When the hotel-casino does reopen, floors 27 through 32, the section that sustained the heaviest damage, will remain closed, Lynn said.

Staying Safe in Las Vegas: Room Safety
By Rick Garman/www.vegas4visitors.com

The fire at the Monte Carlo was a scary reminder of how quickly things can go wrong and the unique challenges that face you when you are staying in such a massive building. I thought it would be a good opportunity to re-run my two part series on how to stay safe in Las Vegas. The sprinklers you see in almost every high-rise in the nation are there, in part, because of horrific blaze that happened in Las Vegas in 1980. A small fire smoldered for hours at the original MGM Grand (now Bally’s) and eventually erupted into an inferno that killed more than 80 people, many of whom were trapped in their rooms.

After that fire the US Congress enacted laws that mandated sprinkler and fire safety systems in all high-rises – life-saving systems that weren’t required at the MGM Grand at that time.

Today the hotels in Las Vegas are among the safest in the world, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore the dangers. All of these fire safety systems are mechanical and/or controlled by computers and although many will say they are infallible, that kind of thinking has led to disaster in the past.

Here are some basic tips on how to keep yourself safe when staying in Las Vegas.

You Can Fit One More Thing In Your Suitcase Can’t You?
Start your safety preparedness before you leave home by packing a small flashlight. Although the hotels are equipped with emergency lighting, it may fail or be obscured by smoke so a flashlight could be instrumental in helping you get to the exits.

Counting Things Other Than Cards
After arriving in your room take the time to identify where the emergency stairwells are located. Count the number of doorways from your room to the stairwell and walk the route to familiarize yourself with any hallway twists or other obstacles. During a fire, the halls may be filled with blinding smoke but you’ll be able to feel your way along the path, counting off doorways by touch until you reach the one that will take you to safety.

You Are Here
Also take a moment to identify where your room is situated in the overall scheme of the hotel tower and how you can distinguish it from the thousands of other rooms in that tower. While knowing your room number will be helpful, knowing the placement of that room can help direct rescuers to you in the event of an emergency. For instance: are you in the north or south end of the tower; are you facing the Strip or the freeway; how many rooms are between you and the elevator or stairwell.

Don’t Ignore and Don’t Pack
As with car alarms, many people have gotten blasé about fire alarms in public places and the Monte Carlo fire was no exception. People remained in the building long after the fire alarms started. If you’re in your room and the fire alarm sounds, grab your room key and head for the door. It may be tempting to collect your other belongings but that temptation can cost you your life. During the MGM Grand fire in 1980, several people were found in an elevator bay with their suitcases – despite the billowing smoke they had taken the time to pack and that decision proved fatal.

Check the Door; Forget the Elevators
Be sure to feel the door and knob first to check for heat, using the back of your hand to do so (to avoid injury to your palm, which could impede your ability to get out later). If the door or knob is warm don’t open it; there may be fire on the other side. If it is cool to the touch open the door carefully and head immediately to the emergency stairwells. Do not use the elevator as these systems may fail during a fire, leaving you trapped or worse. At the MGM Grand in 1980 the heat from the fire was so intense that it melted elevator cables, sending them crashing to the ground with people on board.

When To Go Back To Your Room
If the halls are filled with smoke you should try to crawl to the nearest exit as the freshest air will be near the floor. But if the smoke is too dense even at floor level turn around and go back to your room.

Stairwells are supposed to be constructed to keep smoke and fire out but in many situations, especially when there is damage to the structure, stairwells act as chimneys funneling smoke to the top of the building. If you arrive at the stairwell and find it too dense with smoke, go back to your room.

Trapped In Your Room
If you find yourself trapped in your room by smoke or flames you have a quick decision to make between calling for help or sealing the room. Which you do first totally depends on the situation.

If smoke is coming into your room you should try to seal it up with wet towels before making the phone call. In the time it takes you to see if the phone is working and relate your situation to someone if it is the smoke could overwhelm you and you will not be physically able to seal the room and save your own life. Take the time first to seal the bottom of the doorway with wet towels and check the air conditioning vents as well. If you see smoke coming in through them, stuff more wet towels into the openings.

Filling the bathtub (if your room has one) with water may also be helpful.

Once you have accomplished this, go to the phone and see if it is still in operation, giving anyone who answers your room number, location in the hotel tower as mentioned earlier, and a brief rundown of how dire your situation is including injuries if there are any.

If the smoke has not begun filtering in your room make the call first and then start placing the wet towels around the doors and vents.

Don’t Break The Windows
Although most modern hotel rooms in Vegas do not have windows that open, many have vents at the top or bottom of the sills that you can open to let in a little fresh air. It may be tempting but do not break the windows. Fire needs oxygen to survive and it will seek the best available source, thereby drawing the flames and smoke toward you.

In addition, most fire departments are not equipped with ladders that can reach much past the seventh floor of a high-rise so if help is going to come it’s going to come through your door and not the window.

Don’t Panic
It sounds a lot easier than it actually is but the number one thing you have to do in an emergency situation is stay calm. Panicking will lead to bad decisions and bad decisions will lead to disaster.

Staying Safe in Las Vegas: Hotel Safety
By Rick Garman/www.vegas4visitors.com

Now let's take a look at how to handle a panic situation in the crowded hotel casinos. Las Vegas casinos are among the safest public spaces in the world. With high-tech fire suppression systems and the security cameras covering every square inch, you’re probably safer sitting at a slot machine than you are in your car on the way to the supermarket.

But as with all technology-based systems such as these there is always the risk for a failure, especially in the event of a catastrophic event such as a terrorist attack, something Las Vegas is certainly not immune to. While the odds of something like that happening to you are miniscule covering a few basic safety guidelines could be lifesaving in the event the odds turn against you.

Know Where You Are
Las Vegas casinos are huge places, often with more than 100,000 square-feet of slot machines, table games, bars, lounges, and people – lots of people. It’s easy to get turned around and lost even on a normal day especially if you’re visiting a place for the first time.

But most casinos have some sort of easily identifiable landmark that you can use as a touchstone in the event of an emergency – something that is visible from most areas of the room. Whether it is a statue, a bar, or even a grand light fixture above the table games, take a moment when you enter a casino to notice what that landmark may be and how it relates to the main exit.

Taking a moment to stop and look at the maps found inside the main entrance of most large casinos can also help. You don’t have to memorize it – you’d be surprised how much you’ll remember even with a quick glance.

Notice The Back Doors
The natural inclination for most people during an emergency is to head back out the way the came in. During the tragic nightclub fire in Rhode Island a few years ago most of the crowd headed toward the single front door when other emergency exits were closer and unblocked. As you’re wandering around looking for that winning slot machine take the time to make a mental note of where the alternate exits are located.

Don’t Ignore The Alarms
As mentioned in the first part of this series, people have grown very complacent regarding alarms. True, most of the time if the sirens and strobe lights go off while you’re in a casino it will be a false alarm, but the few minutes that you stand around waiting for someone to tell you if there is an actual threat can make the difference between life and death. If the alarm goes off, head for the exits. If it is a false alarm, the slot machines will still be there when you get back.

Don’t Panic
Easier said than done, right? If you’re in a crowded casino with thousands of other people and something catastrophic happens there will be a panic – it’s probably the only sure bet you can make in Vegas. But by following the few steps listed above you’ll be armed with knowledge that most others won’t be, allowing you to avoid participating in the panic.

MGMMirage Donates Perishable Food From Monte Carlo To Las Vegas Food Bank.

A footnote to a Monte Carlo Fire Update on the Las Vegas Sun website states that MGMMirage donate six thousand pounds of perishable food items from various restaurants and other dining establishments inside of the Monte Carlo to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas.

Props to MGMMirage for having the forethought and generosity to give the food to those in need as opposed to taking the easy road to the dumpster. Very very cool.

No mystery why dinner theater keeps guests in stitches.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The husband and wife team of Eric and Jayne Post has been on a murderous rampage for 20 years, killing people in dinner theaters across the West.

The spree started in Sacramento, moved to Lake Tahoe and finally hit Las Vegas. For a couple of years the Posts slew them at the Showboat out on Boulder Highway. Then they killed them at the Egg & I on West Sahara Avenue for almost eight years.

Now they’re knocking them dead at the Canyon Club in the Four Queens on Fremont Street.

“Marriage Can Be Murder” is an interactive murder mystery that mingles meals, mystery and theatrics — a whodunit that includes a salad, entree and dessert.

“We wrote it so that even if you don’t figure it out but laughed all evening, we did our job,” Eric Post says.

The production debuted at the Canyon Club on Wednesday night. At 200 seats, the room is almost twice the size of the Egg & I. “The larger space lends itself to more theatrics,” Jayne Post says.

The couple created the show for a dinner theater in Sacramento’s Old Town almost 20 years ago. Their show was replacing a dark and heavy dinner mystery, so the Posts decided to go for the funny bone.

The production changes its story line about every four months, alternating solutions to the murder and bringing in new cast members. Half the fun is figuring out who in the audience is in the cast.

Post calls his wife the comedic genius in the family. She’s a stand-up comedian who for the past six years has been a slot host for the MGM Grand in addition to acting in the dinner theater production.

She says they’ve had offers to take the show to Branson, Mo., and other places but they prefer Vegas. “We love the energy and the idea that we can get a hamburger at 3 in the morning if we want to.”

There have been a lot of memorable moments over the years — one of them being when an amateur cast member finished his salad, stood up and announced prematurely, “Yeah, I killed everybody.”

“We’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’ve got an hour and a half left to go, what are we going to do?’?” Jayne Post says. They rushed him out of the room and quickly came up with another killer. “The audience thought it was planned.”

So you thought you’d heard them all? Not until you’ve heard — and seen — ‘3 Redneck Tenors’
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The “3 Redneck Tenors” could have been a punch line, a gimmick — if it didn’t have so much talent.

“When you say ‘3 Redneck Tenors,’ it elicits a response. Everybody laughs,” says Matthew Lord, the show’s founder and one of its stars. “I think initially (the act) sold on the name.”

Lord, who was born in Napa, Calif., but lives in Dallas, is a fan of the original Three Tenors — Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and the late Luciano Pavarotti, — who first sang together in 1990 and spawned a host of knockoffs. It’s the copycat tenors Lord disdains.

“Which is weird because I’m a tenor,” he says. “I loved the original guys but it got a little ridiculous after a while, with Three Irish Tenors, Three Mexican Tenors, Three Everything Tenors. The reason I’m not a big fan of the tenor thing is it’s three vocal types singing together at the same time in unison and I find it extremely uninteresting.”

JAHNA STEELE R.I.P.

Las Vegas transgender legend Jahna Steele has died, according to her close friends.

Steele rose from a Texas altar boy to the title of Las Vegas' sexiest showgirl. She was a member of the "Crazy Girls" topless revue at the Riviera before being outed in 1992 by the syndicated TV show "A Current Affair."

Steele grew up in San Antonio as John Matheny before undergoing a sex change in his early 20s. After her identity became public, she dropped out of show business for several years because of personal issues, including drug use.

"Like many entertainers, I had some problems," Steele told me in an interview in 2004 when she returned to Las Vegas after several years in Hawaii, where she performed in a version of "Boylesque."

Steele's last job on the Strip was reported to be as a warm-up announcer for "La Cage," the female impersonator show at the Riviera.

REMODELING: Harrah's may face more heat.
Findings from fire inspection forwarded to county prosecutor.

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY and JOAN WHITELY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The legal troubles involving Harrah's Entertainment room renovation problems seem to be worsening.

The Clark County Fire Department last week sent its fire inspection findings and recommendations, stemming from investigations into improper remodeling at three of the company's hotel properties and a warehouse, to the criminal division of the district attorney's office.

The file, which reviewed remodeling work at the Rio, Harrah's Las Vegas and the Flamingo, was sent to the district attorney on the recommendation of the Fire Department's civil legal counsel.

It is the first time in at least 12 months that county fire prevention officials have asked criminal prosecutors to review a case.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Jersey Boys' learning from the past.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

It takes courage to be first at something. But if you succeed, you don't have to worry about getting it right.

Who knows what Moe Dalitz thought in 1958, before signing off on the crazy idea of building the Stardust stage with six hydraulic lifts and an ice rink, all to support a plane full of topless showgirls from Paris?

But when "Lido de Paris" was a big hit, the producers of "Folies Bergere" and "Casino de Paris" were the ones to worry how many Parisian feather shows were too many.

And no one knew if Cirque du Soliel's "Mystere" would work in 1993. Now we have five Cirques, plus "Le Reve."

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Bubble artist may bring boost.

It turns out there is something that hasn't been tried on the Strip yet. But if the "Mega Bubble Show" catches on, it may not be as easy to have three copycat shows as it is to pile on more hypnotists and magicians.

Creator Fan Yang already is stretching his resources by spinning off his surprise off-Broadway hit, "Gazillion Bubble Show." His wife, Ana Yang, will keep the one-person show going in New York while he attempts to launch it here. And according to the show's publicist, the only understudy for either of them is Fan's brother.

The show is scheduled to open Saturday at the Steve Wyrick Theatre in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. If the afternoon show takes off with its ambitious schedule of 13 performances per week — three on Saturdays — it could be a huge boost for magician Wyrick and his underperforming theater and club.

Yang — who was born in Vietnam and grew up in Yugoslavia — is most often described as a "bubble artist," using the medium of the soap bubble for all sorts of stunts and illusions. The New York show opened about this time last year, a nine-day booking that has since become an open-ended run. Home versions of his bubble kits became a cottage industry.

Blue Man Group Being Sued By Mike Weatheford/Las Vegas Review Journal.

The Blue Man Group fessed up about a long-running feature of its show after being sued in Chicago by a California grandfather, who didn't enjoy being chosen for the "esophagus cam" stunt.

In each show at The Venetian and elsewhere, one of the Blue Men ventures into the audience and purports to jam a small camera probe into an audience member's mouth. The plaintiff contends the camera was covered with blue paint and nasty grime from the theater floor, and that the invasive action damaged his mouth.

The Blue Man Group responded with a news release saying, "We are disappointed that this false claim forces us to reveal the truth behind one of our most popular theatrical devices."

The film footage seen by the audience is a prerecorded medical video, the statement explains, and the Blue Men contend the camera never really goes inside anyone's mouth. The sequence remains in The Venetian show.

Next thing you know, they'll be telling us they don't really drag anyone backstage and hang him upside down to make a painting.

SHOW REVIEW: "HATS!"
A MIXED BAG: Songs speak more eloquently than dialogue in 'Hats!'

By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Don't dismiss people over 50 in a mindless embrace of youth culture. Give them a chance to show you what they can do and they will.

Is this the message of the theatrical revue "Hats!"? Or the cry of entertainers no longer welcome on the Strip?

The sweet irony is that it's both.

If acrobatics and high-concept gimmicks have discouraged modest, old-fashioned displays of singing, dancing and show-tunery, it took the biggest gimmick of all to bring them back.

"Hats!" was created as a custom order for the Red Hat Society, with songs that often sound like TV jingles promoting the social network of women over 50. The implied devil's bargain is that the Society will turn out (literally) by the busload, packing the house with group sales.

Trop dragging down gaming, Culinary says. By Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun

The Culinary Union has raised the stakes in its contract dispute with the Tropicana, asking state regulators to investigate whether cuts in security staff led to an increase in crime at the casino.

In a series of allegations submitted to the State Gaming Control Board last month, the union has detailed what it says is evidence that deteriorating security conditions pose a safety threat to workers and the public and bring disrepute on the gaming industry.

Fresh from the Culinary’s failure to deliver enough support to propel Illinois Sen. Barack Obama to victory in last month’s Nevada Democratic caucus, the union is eager to demonstrate it remains a powerful force in the state. The union disclosed its complaints publicly this week. The Culinary and Tropicana owner Columbia Sussex return to the bargaining table Monday. The Tropicana is the only Strip casino whose workers are represented by the Culinary that has yet to agree to a contract.

Irish pub opens in the Rio by Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon, a sort of Irish pub, had a grand opening at the Rio this week — in plenty of time fto warm up for St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

The dueling piano’s weren’t playing Irish tunes, but the crowd didn’t seem to mind as they downed Guinness and Pilsner and tried finger foods like boneless buffalo wings, stuffed mushrooms and fried macaroni and cheese. From the menu you can order a variety of dishes, Irish or not — from shepherd’s
pie to nachos.

This is the first McFadden’s west of the Mississippi River — a dozen or so are concentrated in the Northeast, including New York City, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

McFadden’s is located in a 7,000-square-foot corner of the Rio in space once occupied by another pub — the Tilted Kilt.

There is no shortage of Irish pubs in Las Vegas where you can celebrate St. Paddy’s Day year round -– among them McMullan’s (4650 W. Tropicana Ave.), Jack’s (inside Palace Station), JC Wooloughan’s (in the Rampart), Kavanaugh’s (3290 W. Ann Road, North Las Vegas), Nine Fine Irishmen (inside New York-New York), Molly Malone’s (11930 Southern Highlands Parkway), Quinn’s (Green Valley Ranch in Henderson) and Sean Patricks (8255 W. Flamingo Road).

"LOVE" performing at The Grammy's

Cast members from The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil at The Mirage in Las Vegas will perform live at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, February 10th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The twenty-five dancers and acrobats will be performing to a specially edited “A Day in the Life” from the LOVE album. The Grammy Awards will air on CBS at 5 pm PST. The Beatles LOVE album, released by Apple Corps Ltd/Capital Records, received two nominations in the categories of Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Medium and Best Surround Sound Album. Sir George Martin, The Beatles legendary producer, and his son, Giles Martin, worked with the entire archive of Beatles recordings to create this Grammy nominated soundscape for LOVE.

LOVE, a Cirque du Soleil creation and co-production with Apple Corps Ltd., celebrates the musical legacy of The Beatles and is presented exclusively at The Mirage in Las Vegas. This joint artistic venture marks the first time that The Beatles company, Apple Corps Ltd., has agreed to a major theatrical partnership. The project was born out of a personal friendship and mutual admiration between the late George Harrison and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté.

The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil opened to rave reviews on June 30, 2006 and has played to over 1.5 million audience members. This number does include the rumored 200 tix per night that MGM purchases directly from Cirque for their players and the $35 tix that they offer their employees on slow nights.

MENTALISTS CORRECTLY PREDICTS WINNING LOTTERY NUMBERS.

On the heels of his recent participation as a contestant on NBC's reality series "Phenomenon," mentalist Gerry McCambridge (http://www.mentalist.com) ends his Las Vegas show each night by successfully predicting the lottery numbers.

"For years, after every performance I am always asked by audience members if I can predict the winning lottery numbers" McCambridge says. "It is something I always wanted to attempt. It took about two years to figure out how I could make it happen successfully night after night at the finale of my Las Vegas show."

"The audience is looking at my predicted numbers during the entire performance," Gerry explains. "The lottery routine ending involves the entire audience. They all take part in the show's grand finale as the showroom goes crazy with excitement. When they see the prediction unfolding right before their eyes, their faces drop with amazement. Many of them write down my predicted numbers and play them back in their home state after leaving Sin City," he chuckles.

"Besides being proud of the lottery routines success," McCambridge boasts, "My 17 year old son Scott is now appearing on stage in the show with me every night. He expressed an interest in show business about a year ago. I put him to work backstage when I headlined nightly at the Legendary Stardust. When the Stardust closed for implosion, I was offered a contract at Hooters Casino Hotel and I felt Scott was ready for some stage time. After the show every night he signs autographs and poses for photos with all his glassy-eyed teenaged female fans."

After appearing on NBC's "Phenomenon" the ticket demand for my performance at Hooters, as well as private appearances nationwide, is now bigger than ever," McCambridge explains.

Amazing audiences for over 20 years, McCambridge can be booked for personal appearances by contacting mail@mentalist.com or (702) 423-0788.
