Shiny new Shoppes at Palazzo

Mall's retailers say they can weather economy's downturn.

Consumers feeling poorer, a major Strip resort project mired in default and a looming national recession are conditions fancy retailers on Las Vegas Boulevard would like to avoid.

But those are situations they're confronting head-on today at the opening of the Shoppes at Palazzo, a 450,000-square-foot mall that's part of the Strip's newest resort.

"I don't think anyone would dispute now is probably not the ideal time" to open a mall, said Michael Kammerling, senior vice president for retail at Grubb & Ellis in Las Vegas.

The opening comes after retailers nationally completed their worst holiday season in five years; owners of the Cosmopolitan, a $3 billion Strip resort project, announced they are in default on a $760 million construction loan; and near-record oil prices are making it costlier to visit Las Vegas.

Ready to Steak Their Claim

Three high-profile steakhouses will be among Palazzo's dining options.

The new Club Coast has three tiers. All new members receive a ruby level card. Those earning 20,000 base points within 90 days graduate to sapphire and earn double points every day (for at least six months). Members earning 125,000 base points in 90 days receive an emerald card and earn triple points as well as a host of other benefits that are spelled out in the club's brochure.

According to management, unredeemed Sam's Town Prime Rewards points have been combined into Club Coast accounts, and initial tier cards will be issued based on a player's combined 90-day action.

SHOW REVIEW: "Fashionistas"

A Worthy Experiment: 'Fashionistas' too hard a sell despite moments of genius.

Saturday night, John Stagliano could do no wrong. His sex video empire, Evil Angel, won 18 Adult Video News awards, the porn industry's version of the Oscars.

Stagliano took home another Best Director, Video award for "Fashionistas Safado: Berlin," the third in a hard-core saga of fashion industry intrigue.

And the cast of Stagliano's "Fashionistas" live show at the Harmon Theater/Krave nightclub treated the Mandalay Bay arena audience to a politically themed dance number that eventually will turn up on Showtime.

But that was Saturday. The Thursday before, "synergy" was not the operative word at the regular performance of "Fashionistas." If ever there were a week Stagliano's show might get a needed bump, it could have been when the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo was in town.

IN THE CLUBS: Porn queens duking it out for party host crown.

By Jeremy Pond/Las Vegas Review journal

Jenna Jameson once ruled the adult entertainment world, an untouchable — so to speak — as the queen of the porn industry.

The buxom blonde was the one all Las Vegas nightclubs chased to host their events, particularly those centered around the Adult Video News convention and awards ceremony.

But it looks as if times are changing as rival Tera Patrick has seemingly bounced Jameson from her pedestal as the "it" girl when it comes to porn stars hosting marquee parties.

Patrick, a sultry, curvaceous brunette who looks more like an ancient Greek goddess than a porn queen, hosted two of the biggest events of the AVN convention at Tao nightclub inside The Venetian and Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce at Mandalay Bay.

Patrick's party at Forty Deuce was arguably the hottest of the weekend, highlighted by her racy burlesque performance with several other scantily clad women at the high-end ultra lounge.

Porn star Jesse Jane also captured some of the weekend's thunder, hosting the Jan. 11 Strip Las Vegas magazine affair at Jet inside The Mirage. Porn veteran Briana Banks had her party at Tao on Jan. 11, followed by multiple AVN award-winner Stormy Daniels' celebration Saturday at The Venetian hot spot.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Oldies revue put on ice temporarily.

A preliminary injunction issued in Los Angeles last week put a temporary stop to a Sahara oldies revue that includes former members of The Temptations.

Producer Bill Caron said he hopes to have the show — which also features The Platters and Cornell Gunter's Coasters — back up and running by Monday. He was working to determine whether the Temptations tribute would be replaced or carry on with different billing.

The group had been billed as "Legendary Lead Singers of The Temptations" before U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess ruled the Temptations name infringed upon a trademark held by Otis Williams, the last surviving member of the group's most famous "classic five" lineup.

"The Soprano's Last Supper" Moves to The Riviera by Mike Weatherford

After hanging tough in two nongaming venues for a year and a half, "The Soprano's Last Supper" will land in the Riviera Comedy Club on Jan. 31; the last show at the Empire Ballroom is Jan. 22. Steve Schirripa, who booked the comedy club before he became famous on "The Sopranos," is supposed to show up for a grand opening Feb. 12.

The interactive affair will have an early 6 p.m. time slot, not affecting the usual stand-up shows. There will be two ticket prices — $65 and $95 before taxes and add-ons — and those who want to dine with the cast for the higher price can do so at 5 p.m. in the appropriately authentic Ristorante Italiano, one of the rare places on the Strip to retain the same retro decor it had when Frank Sinatra dined there.

The show is much changed from the one that opened in Krave nightclub in May 2006, said Maggie Cupp, who produces the effort directed by her husband, Ryan Sands. The show still parodies the HBO hit, and she estimates 90 percent of ticket buyers come in as fans of the series.

Most of the 13 cast members also perform in "Joey and Maria's Comedy Italian Wedding," which will remain at the Empire for the time being. Potential replacements for "Sopranos" at the Empire include a magic-themed murder mystery dinner show.

MAFALDA GETS A STAR

Longtime headlining pianist Mafalda will become the 22nd addition to the Las Vegas Walk of Stars on Sunday at a private ceremony at the Liberace Museum.

Her star will be placed in front of the MGM Grand at a later date.

Mafalda, a 2002 inductee into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame, performed on stage more than 15,000 times and worked at most of the top hotels on the Strip for 50 years.

Her first Las Vegas engagement was at the Tropicana in 1958. In 1994, she received an invitation to play for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican on Easter Sunday, but the concert fell during the middle of a tour.

"I had even learned the Warsaw Concerto," she said.

Country singer smiling all over Vegas. By Jason Bracelin/LVRJ.

Laura Bryna's a small gal with a big head.

Her snow-white smile spans buildings — the Luxor, to be exact.

Currently, two 10,000-square-foot images of the country singer adorn the twin towers of the casino, her visage the size of a well-scrubbed baseball diamond.

"I'm a little Laura," Bryna says with a giggle. "Being on the side of the building is probably the tallest I'll ever be."

Bryna's face is all over Vegas these days.

NORM: Michael Jackson staying at Palms.

Michael Jackson has been camped out atop the Palms in a suite with his children for almost two months, according to spies.

He may have arrived under the radar, but he's been out in the public with regularity.

Twice in a week, Jackson has taken his three children out to see the sights.

They attended the Tournament of Kings at Excalibur on Saturday and took an after-hours tour of Madame Tussauds Las Vegas the previous Monday.

Jackson spent six months in a Summerlin home last year before vacating it at the end of June. The multimillion-dollar home was left a mess, with a Christmas tree still in place.

The former King of Pop moved to Virginia after he had no luck in getting takers for a headliner gig here.

Sources told me over the holidays that Jackson's handlers were making overtures for a six-figure deal to have Jackson host a New Year's Eve countdown party. But, again, he got no takers.

"Too radioactive," is the term I keep hearing.

Sahara Launches Interactive History Thingy. From www.vegastripping.com

In The SaharaLV.com website has added a neato interactive timeline covering its "50 Years of Fun" (55 and change to be exact, the Sahara opened in October 1952.)

It's a thoroughly interesting, and quite dense trip through the Sahara's long history. The timeline features decade overviews as well as pages that list special events, additions and other notable news for notable years. It is a rare occurrence when casinos embrace their history, but new owners sbe Entertainment have pledged that they are committed to preserving and enhancing the Sahara's legacy as they transform the resort's offerings over the next few years. If this is any indication of what they've got in store, we're stoked.

Harrah’s Goes A Little More Country
With The Addition Of The Toby Keith Gaming Pit
.

Inspired by the “Big Dog Daddy” of country music, Toby Keith, Harrah’s Las Vegas has put honky tonk on the casino floor by adding the country-themed Toby Keith gaming pit.  The area features eight gaming tables and offers a unique mix of games including Casino War, Triple Shot, and Blackjack.

The pit is open from 12 p.m. to 4 a.m., seven days a week, and is located on the casino floor, adjacent to “Bill’s Bar,” a watering hole that also incorporates country elements in its décor. The Toby Pit is adjacent to the casino entrance, luring Strip foot traffic in with the sounds of contemporary country music and the promise of an exciting, unique gaming experience.

When guests saddle up to any of the gaming tables, they will notice custom Toby Keith table felts, leather “TK” branded chairs, and dealers in wild west uniforms. Female dealers wear western-themed, whiskey girl outfits complete with a Toby Keith belt buckle and a bustier, while male dealers sport more classic country wear. Rustic barrels and guitar-lined walls round out the country-themed décor while high-definition televisions play continuous country music videos through an upgraded sound system.

“Night after night Toby’s restaurant is packed wall-to-wall with people dining, drinking and listening to live music,” said Don Marrandino, President of Harrah’s Las Vegas. “We decided to carry that energy onto the casino floor and offer guests great music, popular games, and a roadhouse vibe.”

Toby Keith has been a part of the Harrah’s family since May of 2005 when he opened his famed restaurant, Toby Keith’s: I Love This Bar & Grill, inside Harrah’s Las Vegas. Since its inception, the country hot spot has been a monumental success with hotel guests.

Mafia memories:Was Vegas really better off when it was run by organized crime?
By: John Katsilomentes/Las Vegas Weekly
The restaurant is Piero’s, the fabled Italian haunt that sits just across from the Las Vegas Convention Center on Convention Center Drive. So reliably “old Vegas” is Piero’s that it was used in a scene in Casino, and it also hosted a private screening and cocktail party when the film opened in the winter of 1995.

On its website, Piero’s boasts that the “local color” guys of Vegas still hang out there, and on this Saturday night the restaurant delivers. Sitting at the next booth are two gentlemen, probably in their 60s. One has silver hair, the other brown or black. They are in blue or black suits. Otherwise, their physical descriptions must remain vague. Staring at these guys for that illuminating detail—say, a pinkie ring, gold tooth or the bulky mass that might be a .38 revolver—seems a bad idea.

Fittingly, the conversation is in loud Italian. And every so often, three or four times in an hour-long give-and-take, you hear a word that cuts through the din and across all languages: “Mafia!” Why they spit out this particular word is left to your imagination, and if this conversation were held a generation ago at the restaurant that used to stand on this location, Villa D’Este, it might well have involved legendary mob figure Tony “The Ant” Spilotro and his trusty sidekick, “Fat Herbie” Blitzstein. Even if you forget what you ordered at Piero’s, you remember that animated conversation in a haunt that once catered to the most famous of mobsters.

The fall — and the rise? — of Fremont East. BY Mike Prevatt/Las Vegas City Life.

And there we were, supposedly more than a thousand of us waiting for a handful of signs to be lit up on the newly christened Fremont East Entertainment District. It was past 8 p.m. on Aug. 24, and Mayor McCheese — aka Oscar Goodman — and some City Council members weren't finished patting each other on the back. We waited impatiently, passing snarky comments as the podium occupiers engaged in verbal mutual fellatio.

And then finally, there appeared to be a gesture to the first sign, a huge martini glass, naturally to be lit up by the Mayor (who of course couldn't pass up a reiteration of his gin preference). And just when we thought this long non-countdown was about to end, signaling our return to the bars or our homes … the mayor fell on his ass.

Well, what did you expect from the Town Drunk?

Inside the haunted world of The Amazing Johnathan.
By: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine.

It’s eight o’clock on a Thursday evening and The Amazing Johnathan has just arrived at his warehouse, a storage space that houses his collection of classic cars and, this time of year, a haunted house that will become the centerpiece of his annual Halloween party. It’s an off night for Johnathan, who headlines five nights a week at the Sahara, as he has since May 2005. A resident performer in Las Vegas since 2001, he mixes black humor with purposely second-rate magic and smart-ass comebacks. His ditzy blond assistant Psychic Tanya is often the butt of his jokes; at one memorable point in his show, he stabs her in the head with a pair of trick scissors that turns out to be the real deal.

On this night, Johnathan is clad in an off-white button-down (per our request) topped off, as usual, with his trademark headband, his shaggy auburn hair spilling over at the sides. He is noticeably animated when discussing the myriad antique magic props he has procured over the years, all strewn about the foyer of his storage space. A collapsible chair from the early 1900s, purchased for $2,500, is a particular point of pride. Not unlike his live show, where he goads a member of the audience into what’s-that-on-your-shirt-type gags for upward of 45 minutes, he is eager to find willing volunteers to test out the chair. And just like his show, we fall for it, his magnetism clearly at odds with our common sense as he pulls the string, sending a victim tumbling backward to the floor.

But the haunted house is what we came to see and it does not disappoint. In order to enter his party, guests must complete a maze through body bags, crawl spaces and the Vortex, a spinning turbine splattered with 3-D paint and bisected by a wooden walkway that is made to seem like it’s moving. During a walk-through a few weeks before the party, David Copperfield was given a personal tour and was startled when one of Johnathan’s assistants popped out from underneath a tarp. His reaction, perhaps more than anything, speaks to the legitimacy of the haunted endeavor.

Back at the Sahara a few nights later, Johnathan is onstage at the Congo Room, still unable to pick out the card an audience member has selected from the deck, even after all these years. The $20 bill that same member gave him at the top of the show somehow miraculously winds up in the middle of an orange that Johnathan slices open, lending credence to a craft he has fumbled his way through for the sake of laughs. The Magic Silk of India, which has closed his show for years, is as mysterious as it is hilarious, as a floating orb somehow moves in the air underneath a silk cloth seemingly at Johnathan’s request.

As unpredictable as he can be, you can always count on Johnathan for a laugh—even if, in the case of a collapsible chair, the laughter is directed at you.

A high elegant front harmonizes a dangerously low back to reveal a signature satin lace-up corselette bra embellished with tulle lace. Complete with flutter sleeves, Kiki de Montparnasse’s style reflects the sexy sophisticated atmosphere of Strip House.

The exquisite uniform contributes beauty and style to the sensual elegance already flowing through the restaurant.  The dresses, combined with Strip House’s mélange of sultry silks, rich leathers, rosy lighting and Studio Manasse silhouettes, help create an atmosphere unlike any other fine dining restaurant in Las Vegas.

Strip House, located inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, redefines the traditional steak house.  Renowned restaurateurs Peter, Penny and Mathew Glazier, along with executive chef John Schenk have created an atmosphere unlike any other in Las Vegas.  The innovative menu is designed to excite all the senses with prime cuts of beef charred to perfection, signature side dishes, an extensive wine list and the famed 24-layer chocolate cake.  Strip House is open 5 – 11 p.m. Sunday – Thursday and 5 – 11:30 p.m. Friday – Saturday.  For more information, or to make a reservation, please call 702.737.5200.

Las Vegas has gone to the dogs
By Len Butcher/www.lvrj.com

Seems like dogs are in the news a lot these days and I'm talking about real dogs, the four-legged kind, not movies, or Britney Spears. It's been a mixed bag, from the Michael Vick revelations to Ellen DeGeneres' feud, to a sweet story about a dog nursing a little kitten. So it comes as no surprise that right here in Las Vegas, a new show has hit the boards called Dog Gone is Silly.

J.R. Johns and 14 of his best friends have traveled from Reno to entertain on the Strip in this afternoon show performed daily at 3 p.m. in Krave at the Harmon Theater. It didn't take much to win me over as I'm a dog lover, like millions of other people around the country, but even if I wasn't, this show is great fun for the whole family.

Veteran physical comedian/dog trainer Johns takes you on a four-part journey through what some have called a living cartoon. Johns plays straight man to a constant barrage of pranks perpetrated on him by his canine co-stars. Combining the arts of slapstick, award winning acrobatics, tongue-in-cheek magic and ridiculous props, it is what my daddy used to call a "real knee-slapper."

Johns is hilarious as he plays a number of characters throughout, such as "The Discount Dog Catcher." Ironically, his partners are all rescues or adoptions, which in real life makes him as good-hearted as the characters he portrays on stage. The collection of four-legged co-stars boasts a Great Dane, white Boxers, a number of mixed breeds, as well as a couple of naughty Jack Russell Terriers, al of them seeming more talented than the one before.

To add to the laughter, the canine cast is joined by Spike McGuire, a talented, young, irreverent comic who puts a whole new spin on how to use Yo-Yos as well as his own special take on other variety artist skills that are as impressive as they are funny.

Johns says he got his start in show business at a theme park in Florida owned by Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey. "It was a great apprenticeship. I got the opportunity and privilege to work with all kinds of exotic animals and learned how to read and respect them.

"Dogs I just found to be so much more amazing as they actively thrive on your approval. I think one of the keys to why my show is successful is the genuine affection and interaction between me and the guys. Also, I feel that I have a real talent for creating the right bit or behavior for that particular dog. Just like people they all have their own personalities. I just try to find what they are suited to and enjoy doing the most."

As well as being a Reno celebrity J.R. and the Guys' have performed on numerous television shows, including The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the Today show and America's Got Talent. "TV is always tough to do well. Shows just don't want to give you enough time to develop material. But they do give you instant exposure that has always helped my dogs be all they can be. Our stage is where we really shine and we want all of Las Vegas to come and see us. You don't have to be a dog lover to enjoy our show," Johns said. "You only have to bring a sense of humor. Oh…and maybe a couple of milk bones."

"Dog Gone Silly" at the Harmon Theater runs Tuesday thru Sunday at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. Tickets are: Adults $35, seniors or students $25 and, children $15, plus tax and service fee. For more information call the Harmon Theater Box Office at 702-836-0836.

Latest Hot Happenings – Deals, News, Events – Two Famed Restaurateurs To Open Mermaid Inn And Taro's By Mikuni At The Village At Queensridge.
From:www.accessvegas.com

Two world-class restaurateurs are heading to the northwest Las Vegas suburbs to open Mermaid Inn and Taro's By Mikuni for their first foray out of their respective New York and California markets.

Danny Abrams, owner of Manhattan's acclaimed seafood restaurant Mermaid Inn and founder of Prohibition, the popular 1920's speakeasy-style bar in NYC, is bringing both concepts to The Village at Queensridge, www.tvqr.com, a 29 acre mixed-use neighborhood rising at the edge of Summerlin in Las Vegas. Mikuni, which has won Sacramento's "Best Sushi Restaurant" for ten consecutive years, has also just announced plans to open Taro's By Mikuni at The Village at Queensridge.

Located in the Queensridge master-planned community just 11 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, The Village will feature more than 700,000 square feet of upscale retail, restaurant, entertainment and office space, in addition to 340 distinctive condominiums.

Mikuni intends to operate the 7,200 square foot restaurant under its Taro's By Mikuni concept and offer the award-winning Mikuni sushi and innovative rolls along with other Asian-themed dishes. Abrams' Mermaid Inn will open in approximately 2,500 square feet of space, while his 3,000 square foot bar will capture the spirit of live jazz in a sexy setting, offering hand-crafted, intricate cocktails.

Another famed restaurant opening at The Village is Mastro's Steakhouse. As with Mermaid Inn and Mikuni, The Village will become the first Las Vegas location for Mastro's.

These restaurants will join other eateries and a diverse mix of interesting and much anticipated retailers and services for men, women and children, and include apparel, jewelry and home furnishing stores. For example, Kidville, which operates upscale facilities catering to newborns through five-year-old children and their families, has announced plans to open in 16,000 square feet at The Village. This will be Kidville's first location outside of New York City.

STRIP HEADLINER JAY WHITE PERFORMS IN A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE.
From:Vegas4Locals.com

Strip Headliner Jay White, who performs as Neil Diamond in America's Diamond Live at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, has accepted a part in director Ron Howard's new movie "Frost/Nixon".

White said the call came in last month from a talent agency in Los Angeles. He said he will perform a singing part representing Neil Diamond in 1977. Shooting took place in Hollywood Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 12 – 13.

Ron Howard set his sights on this project when he caught Peter Morgan's play "Frost/Nixon" and liked what he saw. Universal Pictures snagged the movie rights.

The big screen version will be based on the television interviews between Richard Nixon and journalist David Frost a thousand days after Nixon's resignation following the Watergate scandal.

White has performed as Diamond in more than 8,000 shows in five countries including more than 1,000 shows over the past five years with his powerful six piece band at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. "Jay keep singing so I can stay home and relax," says the real Neil Diamond, who has given White his personal endorsement.

White's reaction to all this? "I am honored to be asked to perform in a movie by one of Hollywood's finest and most respected directors, Ron Howard."

This year White is celebrating his 25th Anniversary as Neil Diamond. He performs America's Diamond Live each Sunday through Thursday at the Le Bristro Theater in the Riviera Hotel & Casino. Show time is 7 pm. Tickets are $49.95 per person plus tax.

Ticket information is available by calling the Riviera Box Office at (702) 794-9433.

Wolfgang Puck Continues To Revolutionize The Fine Dining Scene Master Chef to Open Award-Winning Steakhouse CUT In Las Vegas.

Master chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck is bringing his critically acclaimed, award-winning restaurant CUT to Las Vegas. The Beverly Hills, super-chic steakhouse will open at The Palazzo in late December.  CUT will mark the sixth fine dining restaurant from the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group in Las Vegas, recognized as a leader in revolutionizing the dining landscape of the city.

Widely acknowledged as one of the most popular spots in the United States, CUT has raised the bar within the fine dining industry and has garnered high praise from prestigious publications including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times (Three Stars), Wall Street Journal and Wine Spectator, to name a few.

Puck has named Matthew Hurley to serve as the executive chef of the 160-seat restaurant and 60-seat bar and lounge. Hurley began his more than 12-year career with the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group as a prep cook at Spago.  Until most recently, Hurley held the position of Corporate Catering Chef for the Las Vegas-based Private Dining & Catering arm of Puck’s company, a multi-million dollar division catering intimate affairs and extravagant galas.

Hurley has spent the last few months at CUT working alongside Puck and Chef Lee Hefter, Managing Partner and Executive Corporate Chef of the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, to develop the Las Vegas menu, which will offer a contemporary twist on the classic steakhouse.  From USDA Prime Nebraska corn-fed, 35-day dry-aged steaks to true Japanese Wagyu Beef, CUT will cater to true steak connoisseurs.  Guests also will enjoy a wide array of entrees such as the Kobe Beef Short Ribs, Lobster & Crab “Louis” Cocktail with Spicy Tomato -Horseradish and Roasted Wild French Turbot “French Riviera” Style for two.  The menu will integrate Puck’s passion for eating and dining “well” incorporating Puck’s philosophy – Wolfgang’s Eat, Love, Live! ™ – utilizing only the freshest, all-natural and organic ingredients possible to create a seasonal menu filled with innovative tastes.

Las Vegas-based design firm Avery Brooks & Associates (ABA) will craft the space for CUT, providing a modern interpretation of a classic steakhouse.  Custom -made, large, bronzed glass doors will welcome diners into an environment that captures the contrast of both historical and modern sensibility through design, material and lighting. The restaurant will feature rich textures such as a basket woven felt wall which will provide a soft white architectural envelope accented by bronze mirrors, honed limestone and custom-walnut flooring.  ABA will bring a stylistic and contemporary spin to the romance of old lamp-lit dining with a unique custom-designed lighting feature that will evoke a relaxed and intimate ambiance.  Sculpted chairs of minimalist design will offer a unique form that combines the warm texture of aged leather with glossy ebonized ironwood. Leather table tops framed in brushed metal will provide a contrast to the English Windsor wood slab tables that will occupy the center of the space.

Adjacent to the restaurant’s intimate main dining room will be an energetic upscale bar and lounge showcasing exclusive custom cocktails, classic drinks and a smaller menu featuring CUT’s popular appetizers such as the Mini Kobe Beef Sliders.  The dynamic lounge will feature an eight foot tall upholstered sofa in rich black pony -style fabric offset by vibrant cherry lacquer cocktail tables providing a perfect vantage point to people watch.

Private dining space also will be available featuring a fully retractable bronze glass wall that will open to a contemporary wine wall located just outside the kitchen, offering patrons a backstage glimpse into the bustling kitchen.

The original CUT and ultra lounge sidebar opened inside the acclaimed Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel, in June 2006.  Designed by legendary architect Richard Meier, CUT is the 2006 winner of the American Institute of Architects/Los Angeles Chapter Restaurant Design Award, honoring excellence in restaurant design.

A Vegas Portmanteau

Combining cocktails and entertainment at the Rio.
By: Kiko Miyasato/Las Vegas Magazine

If you’re reading the title of this article and wondering what a “portmanteau” is, here’s a quick explanation. The word dates all the way back to the 1870s and was coined by Lewis Carroll, you know, the English dude who wrote Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. A portmanteau is the blending of two words to make a combined word and meaning. Words like “brunch,” a combination of “breakfast” and “lunch” or “spork,” a combination of “spoon” and “fork” are portmanteaus. So what is Vegas’ contribution to this grammatical movement? “Bevertainers,” a combination of “beverage” and “entertainers.” And this special breed of cocktail servers can be found in Las Vegas exclusively at the Rio.

The day of Daisy serving you a drink while a cigarette hangs from her fuchsia-colored lips saying, “There ya go, doll” is way over. While hundreds of cocktail servers flood the casino floors at major properties, no one does it quite like the Rio.

More than 100 male and female bevertainers disperse on the floor nightly, not only to serve cocktails but to provide entertainment. Ten mini stages are set up throughout the casino, placed right in the thick of the action. Every 10 minutes between pulling the handle at Megabucks and sipping on your rum and Coke, you can catch a free performance by one of the bevertainers as they take to a stage.

Two types of bevertainers are there to keep the party atmosphere going—the dancers and the singers. Each server performs a 90-second routine about eight to nine times a night—dancing and singing to some of today’s hottest music. To ensure the level of entertainment is top-notch, each bevertainer must audition for the position and receive training headed up by Dick Foster Productions. While choreography and training are provided, most bevertainers are already trained professionals in their respected field. Beverly Johnson, who is currently one of the dancing bevertainers, has been performing since she was 2. As a graduate in dance management, she has performed at the Moulin Rouge in France, been a dancer in Bally’s Jubilee! and recently performed for the opening of The Venetian in Macau. She loves pulling double duty of cocktail server and performer, as do her comrades.

“I love that we get to perform because I have been a performer since I can remember. Opposed to a normal cocktail job, everyone that I work with is in the entertainment industry, and we’re definitely a different breed of servers. Everyone is very energetic and very outgoing and we all get along so, so well. We all just have so much fun.”

Recently the whole crew pumped up their image even more by getting new attire. Meg DeAgostini, the wardrobe supervisor for Dick Foster, designed the new outfits. The ladies’ sexy and seductive uniforms consist of black lace and black diamond stones. Sure to get a double take, the outfits extend the bevertainers’ assets in a sophisticated, fun, flirty and fabulous way. “All the girls are in the same costume, so we are much more uniformed now and they’re very classy, they’re glamorous, they’re exciting,” Johnson said.

So, make sure to check out the bevertainers at the Rio tonight—by all guesstimations you’re bound to have one fantabulous time.

Revolutionizing the casino lounge at Eyecandy.
By: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

It’s a quaint vision, but one not out of reach any longer. One step into Eyecandy Sound Lounge & Bar at Mandalay Bay and you realize that dream has plunged headlong into reality. And it’s about time.

Taking over the space once occupied by the casino’s center bar, Eyecandy has all the elements of a nightclub with none of the fuss. Better yet, it raises the bar on technology with interactive tables, sound stations and a reactive dance floor. It all sounds like something out of a futuristic movie, but there are no star wars at this nightspot.

Four VIP pods are the only pay-to-play elements of the lounge, but it’s well worth the expense. For a fee (from which your group’s drinks are deducted—which offsets the fee if your friends drink like fish), guests can sit on a circular couch focused around the centerpiece: a 4,000-pound touch-sensitive table that extends 8 feet into the ground. Here, guests can create designs with their hands, view live camera feeds of other pods and parts of the club, including the DJ booth and the go-go cages.

They can also communicate with other pods, taking the ancient art of flirting into a millennium beyond this one. Once you’ve viewed your potential mates on the live video feed and communicated with them through the interactive table, the last step is meeting them in person. Luckily, each pod rotates approximately 45 degrees, the equivalent of 90 degrees when both pods engage the feature. Mingling has never required less physical activity.

The sensory experience continues on the foot-sensitive dance floor where individual squares change color when danced upon. Three tables adjacent to the dance floor have interactive features of their own, plus iPod connectivity that links your favorite playlists directly to the DJ. At peak hours, the DJ conducts so-called iPod wars, pitting guests’ playlists against one another in a peacetime conflict requiring no congressional approval.

Liquid pleasure arrives in the forms of two bars boasting seven wells and 17 specialty cocktails created by master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim. A ridiculously extensive wine list dips into more than 7,000 selections courtesy of massive wine tower at Aureole across the hotel. Also available are rare offerings such as Dom Pérignon by the glass and verticals of vintage wines.

It’s a party paradise that leaves only one question unanswered: Now that you have nothing left to dream about, what will you dream about next?

Art Personified.

A chromatic journey through time.
By: Leslie Frisbee/Las Vegas Magazine

A kinesthetic kaleidoscope into the mystery of life, humanism and all of its wonderment, Mystère takes you on a sensuous voyage through time. And in the age of “mediated voyeurism,” Mystère is a feast for the imagination, a mystical journey that merges past, present and future. An emotive 90-minute frolic into infinite personal interpretations, it’s a prophetic introduction into the awe-inspiring world of Cirque du Soleil.

Since its premiere in 1993, Mystère has revolutionized Las Vegas entertainment. Fusing kinetic art and transcendent sounds and lighting with exhilarating acrobatics, the classic Cirque du Soleil production continues to astound audiences and critics alike.
A production unlike any other, Mystère, as described by Annie Wilkins, the head of props, is “the artistry of the body set to music.” She added, “The artists are so amazing; it’s just so fun to come to work every day.” Responsible for more than 180 props, Wilkins, who has been with Mystère for 14 years, said she has been “in awe of the show since day one. We aren’t technical like so many of the other plays in Vegas. The art of Mystère is seen in the performers and the sets.”

Accentuated by poignant lighting, vibrant costumes and quirky props, including oversize bottles, buggies, balloons, drums and puppets, Mystère’s sets are designed to stimulate the senses. And the ethereal backdrop of juxtaposed vibrant lights, appearing through shapes in space, and incessant fog provides the perfect ambience for stirring emotion. Imaginations unfold in the state-of-the-art theater as musicians, who envelop the numinous stage from above and beyond, unleash a musical score that evokes mystery, intrigue and anticipation.

Utilizing the taiko (a Japanese style of drum), “The Big Bang” symbolizes the journey through life, beginning with primitive creatures. Priming the spectacle is a misguided clown who incorporates the audience from beginning to end, much to the chagrin of Moha-Samedi, the master of ceremonies. Aroused in the aura is an international cast of 76 artists, whose characters include the archangels, a dangerously curious jumbo-size baby who yearns for his pa-pa, a roguish imp, giants and the principal character, Red Bird.
Played by versatile Ross Gibson, a former world championship runner-up in tumbling and professional dancer in England, the role of Red Bird becomes, arguably, the star of Mystère. Appearing throughout the entire production, Red Bird weaves the athleticism of the acrobats with the grace of the dancers, moving fluidly from one element to the next, epitomizing the human interaction aspect of Mystère.

“Birds bring a lot of life and fun to the world. They are free-spirited and have no worries,” Gibson said. “I am always interacting with the characters or the audience; there is always a playfulness about Red Bird. Plus, the fact that the costume is such a peaceful color and beautiful adds a lot of focus to the character.”

Red Bird’s performance is symbolic of what makes Mystère so different from the typical Vegas production. Echoing Wilkins’ sentiments, Gibson said, “Mystère is strongly based on human performance and interaction; there’s no crazy technology, visual or overdone lighting effects.” He continued, “The wow factor for our show comes from what the performers can do—it’s the human performance that’s breathtaking in Mystère.”

A signature to Cirque du Soleil shows is the array of mesmerizing athleticism and human artistry displayed throughout the production: Soaring with acrobatic precision is the man in the aerial cube, a celestial being that embodies the universe. Exhibiting tremendous upper-body strength and agility, double-masked creatures glide effortlessly up and down the Chinese poles, which represent the sprouting of life. A testament to human interdependence is the Lorador brothers’ hand-and-body balancing act. Humanity is perfectly displayed through precisely chiseled physiques that radiate power and stamina through gracefully fluid motions all while rotating on a sphere. High above the stage, like majestic birds, bungee aerialists take flight in a synchronized medley of chaos. The Korean plank signifies unity: working and playing together to create spectacular human pyramids, the performers rely completely on trust and courage. A chorus of artists displays spectacular spatial awareness and acrobatic precision while mastering the mammoth winged trampoline in an exhibition of finding laughter amid adversity. Forty feet above the stage, hopes and dreams soar in the aerial high bar act.

Merging past, present and future, the return of the taiko drums at the show’s conclusion is a reminder that the future is built on the memories and mysteries of the past—creating the circle of life.
A theater production without actors and a ballet that defies gravity, Mystère truly is a beautiful, mysterious voyage through life that will leave audiences “rapt in awe.”

LOOKING IN ON: ENTERTAINMENT

ENDLESS TALENT TO DRAW ON
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Entertainer Gordie Brown, who recently celebrated his first anniversary at the Venetian, has more talent than one person has a right to have.

Impressionist. Comedian. Singer. Composer. Musician.

Sketch artist.

Before winning a talent contest in Canada and taking to the stage, Brown drew political cartoons for the Ottawa Sunday Herald for five years.

He always had his heart set on performing in Las Vegas , and he even bought a home here early in his career while jobs took him to other parts of the country. He finally landed a gig close to home in 2004 and played two years at the Golden Nugget before moving to the Venetian.

He keeps fans in stitches with a bottomless bag of impressions delivered at a breathless pace. He lampoons everyone from late-arriving guests to Johnny Cash and presidents George W. Bush and Clinton.

Although he often relies on certain routines and characters, his act evolves – sometimes right before your eyes – as he reacts to fans. His spontaneity makes an interesting show even more interesting.

"I'm only onstage an hour and a half, but I spend the whole day trying to come up with new stuff," he says.

Brown has taken up his sketch pad again to create caricatures of the people he imitates and other celebrities. It's not far removed from what he does onstage – take a recognizable person and turn him into a caricature – except he uses a pen and paper.

"When I first started drawing again I was really rusty," Brown says. "I'm proud I was able to sharpen up my skills again."

He has put 120 drawings in "Gordie Brown in Caricature," a book that will soon be available on his Web site (gordiebrown.com ). He's also putting together an album of songs he wrote.

Details: 7 p.m. Fridays through Wednesdays, Venetian Showroom, $79, 414-1000.

Checking out Travalena
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Could another impressionist be bound for Las Vegas, joining a field that includes some very talented entertainers – Danny Gans at the Mirage, Rich Little at the Golden Nugget, Gordie Brown at the Venetian?

Veteran Vegas performer Fred Travalena made a triumphant return, selling out almost every performance at the Suncoast Showroom and receiving standing ovations from fans.

Travalena, a Vegas fixture from the '70s through the '90s, packs a lot into a 90-minute show, doing impressions of not only all the usual suspects but characters from "Star Wars," a Smurf, Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, every president since John F. Kennedy and even a presidential adviser – Henry Kissinger.

Travalena wound up the impressions with a rapid-fire list of 15 or 20 celebrities, including Michael Crawford and television characters Archie and Edith Bunker.

Now, if he only had a room large enough to put all those people.
