FACING A ROCKY ROAD

Jay Kornegay's job as executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton requires keeping emotion out of the equation.

But he'll confess to having a soft spot in his heart for his home state team, the Colorado Rockies. Kornegay grew up in the Denver area and attended Colorado State University.

The World Series-bound Rockies (four words I thought I'd never write, along with "I gave up chocolate") have become one of the biggest sports stories of the year with their improbable run of 21 wins in 22 games, including a record-tying 7-0 post-season mark.

I asked Kornegay for the odds on the Rockies staying perfect with a 4-0 Series sweep.

"Our projected number is 15-1, depending on who they face, unlike the 300-1 some books have," he said.

"We opened them at 100-1 to win the Series, and during the course of summer they were as high as 300-1 around the time they were nine games under .500, and, yes, there are a handful of (300-1) tickets out on them."

Now they are 7-5, and the Hilton just took a very large wager on the Rockies at that number, he said.

The Hilton has the Cleveland Indians also at 7-5, with the Boston Red Sox the third choice at 14-5.

Personal note from Steve:

Jay is one of the nicest people in Las Vegas. He always finds the time to talk to me or to anyone else. So if you're looking for a place to bet the horses or watch sporting events, just try the Las Vegas Hilton Race and Sportsbook one time and I think you'll make it your homebase for race and sports wagering. By far the best place to bet and watch the races.

New Frontier set to be imploded on Nov. 13
By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Another well-known Strip property will soon be reduced to a tangled mass of steel and concrete.

The New Frontier will be imploded at 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 13 if plans submitted to Clark County's Department of Development Services and Fire Department are approved.

County officials have reviewed the implosion and demolition plans and the Fire Department is expected to issue permits about a week before the implosion.

New York-based Elad Group bought the property in May for $1.2 billion and closed it July 16.

Joey Bishop, Last Surviving Member of the Rat Pack, Dies at 89

The last surviving member of the famed Rat Pack, Joey Bishop, has died.

Bishop, the goofball comedian, known for his deadpan delivery on countless films and television shows, died this morning at his Newport Beach, CA home. Together with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford, Bishop was part of the legendary Rat Pack who's rollicking performances in Las Vegas during the 1960s turned the dusty desert gambling town into a full blown entertainment destination.

Thank you Joey for the millions of laughs and playing such a pivotal role in making Las Vegas what it is today. You will be missed!

FBI Raids David Copperfield's Vegas Warehouse.

The FBI has raided David Copperfield's Las Vegas Warehouse in search of evidence related to a claim submitted by a local Seattle woman. The FBI left his highly secretive compound, the place where he stores all his illusions, with a computer hard drive, camera memory card and about $2M cold hard cash.

The feds aren't saying exactly what the woman is claiming Copperfield did to her, but if they're taking camera memory cards then you can bet that this has something to do with photos.

Las Vegas entertainment legend Wayne Newton has canceled another round of concerts because of pneumonia, according to a published report. He was to perform shows this weekend at the River Cree Resort & Casino near Edmonton, Alberta. He also canceled his scheduled concerts last weekend. Newton was given the green light by his doctor to perform "Danke Schoen" on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" last week, a week after being voted off the hit show.

Best Burgers In Vegas from:www.accessvegas.com

Our area is host to outlets from three regional burger chains, all of which have a following of people will drive miles out of their way to enjoy one. I want to give you my three picks for the best burgers in Las Vegas. What do they all have in common? All three cook to order with fresh ingredients:

Third Place: In-N-Out Burger - No frills, no frozen stuff, no McFluff. The most simple menu in the world of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, their famous Double Double, basic fries, shakes and soft drinks. Closest one to The Strip is on Tropicana just across the freeway from New York, New York: 4888 Dean Martin Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89103

Second Place: Fatburger - The best "with the frills" burger. You can get hamburger, turkey burger, chicken, topped with things like bacon, an egg, chili or cheese. They have a location right on The Strip across from the Monte Carlo: 3763 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

First Place: Schoops - This is a chain familiar to those of you from the Midwest part of the U.S. The Las Vegas location is a true throwback to the burger and malt shops of the mid-1900's. Burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes, and malts cooked to order and simply amazing. Their only location is down on the "new" South Strip, just north of the South Point hotel (look for the Stoney's nightclub sign, then look for the antique mall to the right): 9151 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89123

Las Vegas Nightlife Redefined with Blush

Casino developer Stephen A. Wynn and renowned night club operator Sean Christie have partnered to create Blush, the first boutique nightclub in Las Vegas.

Formerly the location of Lure, the venue will undergo a complete remodel. The
4,500 square-foot club will feature a lit onyx dance floor and crème lantern ceiling sculpture. This central art focal piece will create various hues and images that enhance the vibe and atmosphere as the display literally comes alive nightly.

A rich palette of deep green, chocolate brown, gold and shimmering metallics create an ambience of sensual elegance. The club will feature a series of contemporary paintings that add a provocative and edgy feel. Additional seating banquettes around a new dance floor will produce a circular flow to the space. The open-air patio and bar have been enhanced with lighted topiaries and outdoor seating surrounded by lush foliage.

In addition to banquettes and bottle service, a private, draped VIP Room is available for up to 25 people. Additional men’s and women’s restrooms have been added as well as some playful amenities - purse drawers at each seat and personal lockers for belongings.

Delectable Asian appetizers from Red 8 will be served nightly from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. Beverage menus, including wines by the glass or bottle and an extensive collection of infused Vodkas, will change on a monthly basis.

The club will feature an eclectic mix of music - rock n’ roll, hip hop and house - from Music Director and Resident DJ Mighty Mi. Every Thursday, DJ Jack Lafleur will take the stage with his signature style. The lighting and sound system was designed by John Lyons, winner of the World Club Award.

Blush Tuesdays, service industry and local night, will be promoted by Brandon Roque.

The Best Vegas Celebrity Couples
From www.vegaspopblog.com

Vegas is a great town for coupling. There is something about all of that neon, slot machine noise and being on holiday that make people want to pair up.

There is the legal coupling known as the Las Vegas wedding which adds weight to the Vegas nickname, "The Marriage Capital of the World" and then there is the unplanned coupling based on random acts of night life that bolsters another Vegas nickname, "Sin City."

Vegas is also a great town for celebrities so it is only natural that the two concepts will intersect in the world of celebrity couples. Phyllis McGuire and Sam Giancana were probably the greatest Vegas celebrity couple love story of all time. based on Vegas lore and romanticized treatments like the movie 'Sugartime.'

Beyond the celebs who fly in for quickie Vegas weddings, here are the five current best Vegas celebrity couples:

Britney Spears and Criss Angel
This fresh Vegas celebrity couple should be made the unofficial first couple of Vegas for as long as they're together.

Britney has done more for the Vegas economy over the last few years with her appearances and Criss films his A&E 'Mindfreak' show in Vegas and will star in a Cirque du Soleil Show at the Luxor.

More importantly, they are veterans on the Vegas celebrity coupling circuit. Britney was married and annulled here and she and her second husband were constant companions of the Vegasarazzi. Criss had a Vegas fling with Paris Hilton.

I'm reading they may have already broken up, but I'm staying positive and hope these two crazy kids find a way to make it work.

If they do end up at the Little White Wedding Chapel, they need to be careful who they invite to the wedding.

Siegfried and Roy
While this Vegas power couple's romantic relationship has long since moved to a professional partnership, there is still an undeniable spiritual, magical connection between the Siegfried and Roy.

If it weren't for Roy's tragic accident back in 2003, the dynamic duo would still be fixtures on the Strip with their lifetime contract at The Mirage. Well technically, with their statue right on The Strip, they are still a fixture, but only in bronze.

They started performing in Vegas in 1972 and have performed more than 5,000 shows. Roy's rehabilitation gives hope that one day they'll be back on a Vegas stage, but in the mean time they are staying active in the community. My pal Robin Leach has some great photos of Siegfried and Roy tapping the keg at the annual Hofbrauhaus Oktoberfest in Vegas.

Pamela Anderson and Hans Klok
As far as I know, this relationship has not blossomed into a work-based romantic relationship, but the popularity of their 'Beauty of Magic' show at Planet Hollywood qualifies Pamela Anderson and Hans Klok as a couple.

Pamela has constantly been in the Vegas headlines ever since she announced she was buying a luxury pad at the Panorama Towers on The Strip last year. Unfortunately, her ex-husbands Tommy Lee and Kid Rock have also been making headlines. It seems that every time they are in Vegas at the same time, there are rumors of one threatening the other like last New Year's Eve when one showed up at the other's suite to allegedly settle a score. Of course the bravado and threats culminated in the VMA fist fight.

Known as the "World's Fastest Magician," Hans' headlines have only been for his feats on the stage. The only ex situation he has is when Carmen Electra backed out of his first planned Vegas show, but Pamela seems to be a better fit.

Maybe if this couple lasts long enough, they'll also be enshrined in bronze on The Strip.

Pink and Carey Hart
Pink is originally from Pennsylvania, but her extreme sports hubby Carey Hart grew up in Vegas and Vegas is where their relationship started to bloom a few months after meeting at the 2001 X Games.

With their jobs, they obviously travel a lot, but have residences in Vegas and LA. Carey also has a business in Vegas. The reality show 'Inked' was filmed at Carey's Hart & Huntington tattoo shop at the the Palms.

Jenna Jameson and Tito Ortiz
Jenna Jameson was born in Vegas and Tito Ortiz has made a name for himself slugging it out in the UFC Octagon in Vegas and abroad. When I interviewed the couple at the AVN Awards earlier this year. They seemed extremely happy, but the situation was a little tense, because just off-screen of this photo is Jenna's ex-husband Jay Grdina doing an interview.

Jenna has been picked apart in the tab rags all year and Tito gets a lot of grief for being the "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" and his swagger in the Octagon, but the way I see it, if you can make each other smile the way they do, that's what life is all about.

Diablo's Cantina gets gold star of originality.
By: Jeremy Pond/Las Vegas Review Journal

A devilish twist to the nightlife scene commenced this past weekend, with Diablo's Cantina jumping into the mix with a much-anticipated soft opening.

If this was any indication of what is to come at Diablo's, the Light Group should have a nice addition to its stable.

What makes Diablo's special is its uniqueness, giving patrons something completely different when it comes to venturing out to a local hot spot on any given evening. The 13,000-square-foot, multilevel entertainment complex is going to get "a lively, fiestalike atmosphere," according to Alex Acuna, director of public relations for Light Group.

All you have to do is walk or drive by the establishment one time to see this isn't your standard venue. Think about a combination of Fat Tuesday's, Margaritaville and any typical nightclub and you have Diablo's, which gets a gold star for originality and creative concept.

The official opening comes next month, so expect a lot of noise to be made right from the get-go. Anticipate some saucy, debauchery-filled events orchestrated by marketing/promotions director Wayne Crane, who did a whole lot with very little turning Mist lounge inside Treasure Island into a lively venue during his time running the show there.

SHOW REVIEW: V — The Ultimate Variety Show

Flashing Back: Style, format of variety show transports audience to another era.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

This is the new old Vegas.

Sure, the performers in "V — The Ultimate Variety Show" are still young pups compared to active seniors such as Don Rickles and Tony Bennett. But neither of them juggles, twirls a bolo to knock a flower out of somebody's mouth or supports the weight of another guy on his head.

Many of the "front of curtain" acts in "V" have been doing that stuff for ages. The hand-balancing team of Iouri Safronov and Nikolai Meinkov opened "Mystere," the show that ushered in a new era for Vegas back in — can you believe it? — 1993. But if age makes it harder to do their slow-motion athletics, you don't notice it yet.

And a touch of grey kind of suits an Argentine gaucho anyway. When Hugo Latorre says for maybe the 8,000th time on a Vegas stage, "I'm not gay, but my boyfriend is," his winking smile has a little extra comic resonance.

Tribute artist sings 'for my team, for God and for Ronnie Dunn'
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

When Ronnie Lee Keel sings tribute songs, he visualizes the popular country performer Ronnie Dunn there in the room with him.

"I sing for my team, for God and for Ronnie Dunn ," said Keel, who fronted a heavy metal band before he had a conversion and turned country. "I pretend every night he's in the back row and I hope to do him proud."

The fledgling "Country Superstars Tribute" show at Fitzgeralds is certainly nothing Ronnie Dunn would be ashamed of. It's an energetic production that features tribute artists backed by an equally talented five-piece band, which is in itself unusual in this day of taped music.

He loves his country
Marine who served in Desert Storm takes on new role, as Tim McGraw in Las Vegas tribute show.

By Jerry Fink /Las Vegas Sun

It's a long way from the battlefields of Iraq to the stage at Fitzgeralds.

It took country music singer and Marine Dave Hoover, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm in 1990, about 15 years to make the journey.

Now, instead of snipers with rifles he has to watch out for critics with pens.

"It's been a little rough start because of the slow season, but we believe in the show and I love the family environment we have with the cast and crew," Hoover said. "I feel blessed and grateful and I'm hoping this is a stepping stone. This is a growing process for us."

Hoover portrays Tim McGraw in the Country Superstars Tribute production that debuted this summer in the small showroom at the casino on Fremont Street, a fun show that's capitalizing on the nation's renewed interest in country music.

Strange tales.
Weird Las Vegas takes readers on an eerie tour of Sin City.
By:JARRET KEENE/Las Vegas City Life

IN RECENT YEARS, THE LAS VEGAS POPULATION BOOM has coincided with an equally formidable travel-writing explosion among local writers. Consider CityLife news editor Matt O'Brien's Beneath the Neon (a grim tour of Vegas storm drains), or Jack Sheehan's Skin City (a superficial examination of our adult-entertainment industry), or Steve Friess' self-explanatory Gay Vegas. Every entertainment writer in town, it seems, has just brought out an unusual tome on Vegas or is busy meeting a deadline on one. What else could explain Sterling Publishing's choice of Zamora the Torture King as co-author of Weird Las Vegas?

High Table Game Limits by Bill Burton

One of the biggest complaints I hear from players is that the minimum bet for the table games are high especially on the weekend and other busy times. Areas with only one or two casinos and even Atlantic City on a weekend all suffer from the lack of tables to accommodate the lower limit players.

Unfortunately it's a matter of supply and demand. Since there are more players than table space the casinos can raise the limits and still fill many of the seats. The sad reality is that, it also makes more economic sense to the casino to have higher limit tables even if some of them are not full.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Strutting their stuff.
Chippendales celebrate 2,000th show at the Rio.

In case you gals want something sexy for yourselves, Chippendales, that group of very hot guys who perform at the Rio, will celebrate their 2,000th performance this Saturday, Oct. 6. In addition to reaching that milestone, 2007 also marks the fifth anniversary of the Chippendales at the Rio where they've had women screaming with delight and I'm sure having naughty thoughts.

And if you want to impress your friends with some Chippendales knowledge, take note. Each year the men bench press more than 3,300 pounds in the gym, discard 57,408 garments during their performances and bring more than 5,200 girls on stage to be a part of the show. There's obviously no need for these guys to subscribe to Match.com.

My friends over at the Las Vegas Advisor emailed me the following dining tips in a recent report which I suggest you read, print out, and bring it to our town on your next visit. Here's what they had to say.

Gold Coast T-Bone: One of the city's truly great ongoing steak specials since it was introduced in 1993 for $5.95, is the 16-ounce T-bone. It comes with a big bowl of salad, baked beans, potato wedges, onion rings, garlic bread, and a draft beer. It's served 24 hours a day in the Gold Coast's Monterey coffee shop and you still have to be 21 or older to order it. This meal hasn't changed a bit in nearly 15 years, despite the acquisition of Coast by Boyd. The only negative is that you're eating in a coffee shop. No biggie. At $10.95, this is a Top Tenner!

Hard Rock Gambler's Special: The "secret off-the-menu" special in Mr. Lucky's has been served continuously at the Hard Rock since 1995 ($5.95). As a result, while it's still not listed, it's not really much of a secret anymore. The sirloin & shrimp dinner has changed slightly over the years, but only in quantity and presentation. In its current incarnation, the three grilled shrimp on a skewer are a little smaller than they were in their heyday, but the salad now comes on the side instead of being crowded onto the dinner plate (so the portion is larger). It still comes with choice of potato, including the good garlic mashed. At $7.77 and available 24 hours a day, this remains another top value.

Redwood Porterhouse: This one really goes back, all the way to 1988. Back then, this deal, at an amazing $6.95, was the big bargain play for anyone who wanted to eat at the California's Redwood Bar & Grill on the cheap, and despite a big price move, it's still the main bargain at the Redwood. This is another meal that's not listed on the menu, and except for the price, now $17.95, it too has remained amazingly similar over all these years: an 18-ounce porterhouse, soup or salad, choice of potato, vegetable, bread, and hot apple-dumpling dessert. The steak isn't as impressive as the Gold Coast's, but the big giveback is the room, with soft lighting, good service, and a live piano player.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Plaza singing 'Viva Las Vegas'

This pioneering afternoon show is no longer homeless, while the star of an even more historic show refuses to become a streetwalker.

Producer Dick Feeney reopened "Viva Las Vegas" this week at the downtown Plaza. It may be the first case of a casino offering a show in the afternoon but not at night. However, Feeney says with a laugh, "I can't surrender my title of 'Las Vegas' longest-running afternoon show.' "

"Viva" opened at the Sands in April 1991. It moved to the Stratosphere in late 1996, where it stayed until the end of last year. Along the way, the revue was instrumental in establishing the "free for the price of a drink" promotion that became a standard practice for matinees.

The Plaza will be able to do any promotion it wants. Feeney says the casino cut an old-fashioned deal, paying a guarantee for "Viva" instead of making him rent the room and work for ticket revenue. Tickets will sell for $10 (pre-tax) or $12.88 in a buffet combo.

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett.

A special ceremony was held recently at the Las Vegas Hilton showroom to unveil the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame and its first inductees: Monty Hall ("Let's Make A Deal"), Peter Marshall ("Hollywood Squares"), Wink Martindale ("Tic Tac Dough") and Hugh Downs ("Concentration"), who also received the "Lifetime Achievement Award." Impresario Merv Griffin was honored posthumously. The induction ceremony with wonderful video clips led into "The $250,000 Game Show Spectacular," which is the hotel's new afternoon show.

Three celebrity hosts, Bob Eubanks ("The Newlywed Game"), Chuck Woolery ("Wheel of Fortune," "Love Connection" and now "Lingo"), and veteran contestant Jamie Farr (cross-dresser Klinger from "M*A*S*H*") take turns hosting the new game show that is a compilation of many game shows. On this one special day, all three hosted.

The lively interactive game show has 50 winners at each show. Participants are randomly chosen from ticket stubs. The show ends with a chance to win $250,000. IF someone wins the prize, every audience member receives $100. The last game is choosing three out of 20 envelops with the goal of having the money amounts adding up to $1,000 even. Pretty tough odds; however, the contestant walks away with whatever amount the three envelopes display. For game show lovers, this is a good bet. Tickets are $46.20, call 702-732-5755.

Comedian Vinnie Favorito has been headlining at O'Sheas for a few years and recently threw a party to celebrate his resigning to stay put. Actually the rather hidden showroom is perfect for Favorito who excels at attack humor aka Don Rickles. He actually uses O'Sheas as a foil making fun of where he's headlining.

You have two ways to go when you attend his show. You can either be a part of the show and sit down front and get picked on or you can try to hide in back. Either way, you'll laugh yourself silly and occasionally groan when Favorito pushes the envelope. He amazes you on the way he can remember the people he picks on and then the way ties them together with his adlib rants. Favorito is as good as it gets.

The Hawaiian Tropic Zone featuring dining and nightlife action will open in late December inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. The Las Vegas location will boast a sexy modern décor, multi-tiered dining room, cat-walk stage for nightly entertainment, full bar and a two-story waterfall.

Exotic and friendly Hawaiian Tropic models will serve as "table concierges" to assist with guests' dining needs as well as participate in nightly beauty pageants. Casting calls are being held Oct. 22-26 and Oct. 29-Nov. 2. American fashion icon Nicole Miller has designed exclusive fuchsia bikinis and floral sarongs for those chosen to be one of Hawaiian Tropic Zone's sexy table concierges.

Entertainer Terry Fator, who gained national popularity when he recently won NBC-TV's "America's Got Talent" promptly sold out two October show dates at the Las Vegas Hilton, and has now added another performance on Dec. 3. Fator's special guest for the December show will be fellow talent contestant Bobby Badfingers. Tickets are $39.95-$99, call 702-732-5755 or 800-222-5361.

Fator has spent 32 years honing his skills as a ventriloquist, comedian, singer, and celebrity impressionist, but his key decision to blend those skills with his incredible ability to mimic famous singers has put him over the top.

Voted as "Best Cocktail Server" by the Las Vegas Review Journal's "Best of Las Vegas" four years in a row, the Bevertainers at the Rio are sexier than ever with brand new costumes with lace material sprinkled with black diamond stones.

More than 100 Bevertainers add to the energy and excitement of Rio's gaming experience with special female and male cocktail servers who provide a high level of beverage service and also sing current tunes and dance to hot choreography at any of the 10 mini stages throughout the property. Each Bevertainer performs a 90-second live number once an hour - so at any one visit to the Rio, casino customers may enjoy a variety of free performances every 10 minutes.

So nice to have The Scintas back at the Shimmer Cabaret in the Las Vegas Hilton. It’s where they began their Las Vegas journey before moving to the Rio and then the Sahara. Actually it’s a perfect room for the family act comprised of brothers Joe and Frank, sister Chrissi and drummer Peter O’Donnell, who is an honorary Scinta, and a live band. Tickets are $49.99 and $64.99 for the 9:30 shows nightly except Thursday and 2 p.m. matinee on Monday, call 800-222-5361.

Their show has been rearranged with some new material added, gained a new show title, “Laugh Out Loud with The Scintas,” and received a new LOL logo. Most noticeable changes include an even faster paced show and a new look and material for the ever powerful, pint-sized Chrissi.

The new Strip House located on the mezzanine level of the new Planet Hollywood is simply spectacular. The décor is immediately striking and seductive with red flocked wall coverings creating the predominate color accented by interestingly placed black and white photographs of scantily dressed women from the original 1900s Studio Manasse collection.

The eatery is 10,000 square feet and seats 200 in the main dining room and 50 in the lounge. There are two private dining rooms and the wine room has a roundtable that rotates around a brass pole. With that said, one of the intriguing questions surrounding football is “Will the Patriots go undefeated?” The Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook has posted a proposition on whether or not this can be done. Only one football team in the history of the NFL has gone undefeated. This team, of course, was the 1972 Miami Dolphins. The odds on the “prop” are NO -600 (wager $600 to win $100) and YES they will go undefeated +500 (wager $100 to win $500). Please visit the SuperBook for all the current odds and rules.

Three days ago, my husband and I did just this, and we couldn't be happier with the experience.
