600 rooms at Harrah's closed.
Concerns about remodeling prompt move

As a safety precaution, Harrah's Las Vegas early Monday evening closed about 600 of its hotel rooms, relocating affected guests to comparable lodgings at sister properties nearby.

Jan Jones, an executive at Harrah's Entertainment, said the company voluntarily took the step because an ongoing internal investigation had revealed that several larger remodeling projects at Harrah's on the Strip took place without the necessary permits.

The vacated Harrah's rooms account for 15 percent to 20 percent of the property's estimated 3,000 rooms, said Marybel Batjer, vice president of public policy and communications for Harrah's Entertainment.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Le Reve' continuing to evolve.

Wayne Newton wasn't the only Las Vegas connection to "Dancing With the Stars" this week. Brief Monday footage of ballroom dance pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy backstage at "Le Reve" reminded us of that show's seemingly endless evolution.

Chmerkovskiy is adding some ballroom sequences to the Wynn Las Vegas aquacade, which may or may not be ready for a marketing relaunch by spring.

You may recall the show debuted in 2005 to dismal word of mouth. Director Franco Dragone kept plugging away, toning down some dark imagery and switching from a male to female protagonist to further the sex appeal.

One Wicked Good Time

By:Kiko Miyasota/Las Vegas Magazine
He was thirsty … still thirsty. Mr. D. Ablo had been scouring the Las Vegas Strip day and night and still could not quench his thirst. He had been to just about every watering hole in the city—
coming up as dry as the desert in which he searched. He needed a namesake, a place where his devilish deeds didn’t have a limit—where a Spring Break vibe could happen every day of the year. Finally, D. Ablo decided to erect his own place of worship, a place where the city of sin could raise its flag—a place after the devil’s own heart.

Please Welcome Las Vegas’ newest contender, Diablo’s Cantina. Connected to the Monte Carlo and managed by The Light Group, the 10,000-square-foot Diablo’s is located right in the thick of the action as the establishment stakes its claim on the Boulevard.

Diablo’s gates allow easy access directly off the Strip. The two-story den of iniquity entices passersby as they can catch their first glimpse through the near floor-to-ceiling windows as pumping music flows out the door.

Soft lighting combined with strings of holiday lights and candles cast a gentle glow onto the rustic and vibrant décor, creating the perfect ambience for naughtiness. An ample bar beckons patrons to sidle up. For a bite to eat, take a few steps up where you can find groups of tables and cozy booths. The dining menu is both inventive and extensive, featuring Mexican, Southwestern and American cuisine.

But what the sinners of Diablo’s really want to give up their souls for are the drinks. The tequila list features more than 80 choices of the libation—everything from your typical tequila to the rare and exotic. In addition to the staple margaritas, sangrias and beer, specialty drinks like the Sinful Vixen, Karma, The Chupacabra and The Frida Kahlo can be ordered by the pitcher. Drinks by the pitcher? Now we’re talkin’!

Tucked in a corner is a set of stairs to the second floor, where the first thing you’ll feel is the gentle breeze. The open-air design creates a coastal feel and allows unobstructed views of the Strip. Feeding the frenzy is another bounteous bar where the “wheel of sin,” once spun, will determine drink specials. There’s plenty of seating for the weary, but why would the weary come? Here is where the real licentiousness begins, as a stage hosts live bands and DJs, who draw patrons to the dance floor. Helping to raise your spirits and blood alcohol levels are the roaming tequila vixens—let’s just say, muy caliente!

This multilevel playground named Diablo’s is a friend to all: No cover, long lines—or elitist attitude. This place was built on fun; the upscale cantina is an unpretentious place to revel. As the 27-foot she-devil balances her pitchfork in her hand and watches from her perch on the roof, Mr. D. Ablo smiles on.

Downtown Delivers
By Jack Houstom/Las Vegas Magazine
Petula Clark once sang that the lights are much brighter downtown, and prior to the arrival of Bugsy Siegel and, later, Steve Wynn, they actually were. But in the 40 years between the opening of Siegel’s Flamingo and Wynn’s Mirage, it’s the electric meters on the Las Vegas Strip, not downtown, that have been off the charts. But even in the wake of megaresorts and high-rise residential properties, downtown is still the place to forget all your troubles and, when the mood strikes, forget all your cares, too.

More than a decade ago, neon-lined Fremont Street closed to vehicles and was paved over with concrete in a successful attempt to restore tourist traffic to the area. A canopied LED screen stretching the length of five football fields was erected overhead, offering nightly light shows from dusk to midnight. Earlier this year, the city entered into a second revitalization phase, adding neon signs and landscaping to a three-block stretch of the street known as Fremont East.

It’s impossible to truly experience Las Vegas without spending at least one night downtown. So start out north on Las Vegas Boulevard, make a left (or right) at Fremont Street and head straight on till morning.

Buffets are must-dine options for many visitors, but few encompass the supreme bang-to-buck ratio of Lucky 7’s Buffet at the Plaza. For $7.77 all day, every day, everything from prime rib to Chinese food is up for grabs. Brunch goes on until 4 p.m.—perfect for a midafternoon snack of bacon and eggs. Not in the mood for anything on display? Head over to so-called “action stations” where chefs fulfill your requests while you wait.

Sweet treats abound at the snack bar inside Mermaids. Look for the tropically dressed ladies outside giving away Mardi Gras beads and head to the back corner of the casino, where deep-fried Twinkies and Oreos (opposite page), chocolate-covered bananas, hot dogs and French fries are all 99 cents each. Add a plastic football full of Miller High Life or a yardlong margarita from the neighboring bar for a dining experience you won’t find anywhere else. For a little more elegance, try Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse (Golden Nugget), Hugo’s Cellar (Four Queens) and Triple George Grill, an unheralded steak and seafood joint (201 N. 3rd St.).

Entertainment comes in many forms downtown, from free performances along Fremont Street to resident shows inside the hotels. Defending the Caveman (Golden Nugget), the longest running one-man show on Broadway, has been earning rave reviews for its endearingly funny take on the differences between men and women. At Fitzgeralds, impressionist Larry G. Jones is a veritable whirlwind of voices, chronicling the last 50 years of entertainment, politics and sports. Country Superstars Tribute brings together impersonators who look and sound like Nashville’s biggest names, including Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn and Shania Twain. Renowned impersonator Harmik takes to the stage at the Canyon Club at Four Queens as Wales’ sweatiest, swingingest export, Tom Jones.

But it’s been said the best things in life are free. Every night along Fremont Street, you can catch a motorcyclist riding around and upside down inside a metal sphere, live rock bands and spray-paint artists producing works faster than Bob Ross. And, yes, the Piano Rig features a fleet-fingered ivory tickler performing on the back of a tractor trailer.

Winding down the night with a drink is always an acceptable idea, and downtown has more than enough venues to rehydrate, de-stress and let the inhibitions disappear. Overlooking the Fremont Street Experience from its west end, The Dome at the Plaza is a sports bar with a view to be relished. The same goes for Vue Bar at Fitzgeralds, an outdoor beer balcony in the middle of Fremont Street. The Rush Lounge at Golden Nugget features live entertainment, including local legend Frankie Moreno, who performs Wednesday through Sunday. But for a real taste of what downtown is all about, make sure to head to Hogs & Heifers (201 N. 3rd St.), the rowdiest, raunchiest watering hole where the bartenders dance on the bar and bras get hung up on the wall for posterity.

After that, the rest is up to you. Just make sure you buy your souvenirs before you drink. Downtown is full of kitschy only-in-Vegas keepsakes, and while a customized flask with your favorite sports team sounds good after several beers in a football, its luster may be lost by morning.

The Unofficial Downtown Bar Crawl

Certainly not complete, but a
sufficient enough guide to make a night of bar-hopping downtown more memorable than, say, a Pittsburgh Steelers flask.

Hennessey’s [425 Fremont St.]
You’ll notice it by the world’s largest pint glass lingering high above on the corner of Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.

Downtown Cocktail Room

Come for the vaulted ceilings, low lighting and intimate vibe, but stay for the killer jukebox, featuring a little bit of everything that’s good.

CONCERT REVIEW: Heaven, hell and heavy metal thunder.
Band reunites Sabbath mates for a headbanger's dream.

By Jason Bracelin/Las Vegas Review Journal

Good things come in small packages, like newborns, chicken wings, shots of Jägermeister and Ronnie James Dio.

The man sings as if a bullhorn was lodged in his throat, his voice almost too big for his modest frame, like a shotgun shell fired from a peashooter somehow.

It's one of heavy metal's most signature sounds, sonorous and operatic, a summation of the genre's defining principle: Too much is never enough.

Pair Dio with two of his former Black Sabbath running mates — guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler — along with veteran drummer Vinny Appice, and you get Heaven and Hell, a band so metal, it deserves its own spot on the periodic table of elements.

Hyperactive performer's life on stage is a snap.

By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun.

He's a snappy dresser, makes snappy retorts and snaps to attention.

Hyperactive comic Bobby Badfingers (Bob Von Merta) lives in an obsessive, snap-related world , snapping out puns at an incredible rate - almost as fast as he snaps his fingers.

Snapdragons, snapping turtles, Snap-on tools, red snappers, snap peas.

He does a bit in his act about what the world would be like without snap - pants would fall down, bras wouldn't be fastened, no one could snap his fingers. No Snap-on tools or ginger snaps.

He's at the Las Vegas Hilton Sunday and Monday, opening for ventriloquist/impressionist/singer Terry Fator, winner of NBC's 2007 "America's Got Talent" competition .

NORM: Pamela Anderson marries at Mirage

Pamela Anderson celebrated her wedding Saturday with thousands of her new best friends.

After announcing her marriage to the audience after her second magic show, Pamela invited everyone to party at the Heart Bar in the Planet Hollywood Resort.

Champagne was served to the entire bar and casino.

Anderson and Hollywood producer/high roller Rick Salomon concluded their whirlwind romance by getting married at The Mirage Villas at about 8 p.m.

At 9:15 p.m., Planet Hollywood's marquee video board began flashing "Congratulations Pamela and Rick."

After the 10 p.m. performance, Anderson informed the audience at "The Beauty of Magic," in which she plays a magician's assistant to illusionist Hans Klok, that everyone was invited to join her at the bar.

Planet Hollywood presented her with a four-tiered pink- and-white cake.

It was Anderson's third marriage; Salomon's second. She was married to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in 1995 and, briefly, to Kid Rock a year ago. Salomon had a short marriage with Shannen Doherty of "Beverly Hills 90210."

Both Anderson and Salomon are known for infamous sex videos; her's with Lee and his with Paris Hilton.

WEDDING DETAILS

Guests at the Pamela Anderson-Rick Salomon wedding Saturday included her two sons from her marriage to Tommy Lee, actors Tobey Maguire, Lukas Haas and Ethan Suplee, and illusionist Hans Klok.

With Anderson in a white Valentino minidress and Salomon in a black suit and black knit skullcap, the newlyweds were declared husband and wife about 9:20 p.m. by Nathan Ward, who officiated the ceremony.

The couple's first song was Sade's "By Your Side," from the turntable of DJ Neva of Jet Nightclub at The Mirage.

The wedding reception was catered by Stack Restaurant, where Anderson and Salomon had dined Friday night.

After dashing back to Planet Hollywood Resort for the 10 p.m. show, Anderson — after the first time Klok made her appear on stage — informed the audience that she got married.

At the end of the show, Planet Hollywood servers began pouring champagne throughout the casino.

Anderson and Salomon, accompanied by members of the wedding party, arrived at the Heart Bar about midnight, where she raised a toast in front of a large crowd that ringed the bar area, which is in the center of the casino.

A four-tiered white cake with pink flowers was passed out to everyone in sight.

NORM: Wallace, Seinfeld keep Slam clean.

Touching the bases at Andre Agassi's 12th Grand Slam for Children on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden:

Longtime attendees of the event noticed a striking difference. The language was significantly toned down, and the political zingers of the past were missing. That's a far cry from the F-bomb fests by Robin Williams and the political rants of Dennis Miller that set off Elton John. Thanks to George Wallace and Jerry Seinfeld for keeping it clean.

During Agassi's red carpet appearance, I asked him about progress on his autobiography, which landed him a record $5.3 million advance. There have been reports he has settled on Pulitzer Prize-winning writer J.R. Moehringer as his collaborator.

"At this particular stage, I'm just gonna say I have a lot of great people around me right now, sort of helping me make a lot of decisions," Agassi said. "First I have to plumb my own sort of depths. I have to get it all out then I have to organize it."

Tony Bennett, in a red carpet interview, shared his earlier memories of Las Vegas.

"My first trip was at the El Rancho (in the 1950s), and they didn't allow record artists. They were so high-class they only booked (acts like) Marlene Dietrich and Noel Coward. No country acts were allowed and no record acts were allowed, but Milton Berle put me on his show, which was at the El Rancho."

"Dancing With the Stars" professional dancer Julianne Hough, on the red carpet with race car driver Helio Castroneves, talked about her Las Vegas background. Hough, 19, lived here for a year in her midteen years and attended Las Vegas Academy, where she majored in theater.

"I was very involved in the school, and I was always in the plays. I was in 'Beauty and the Beast' there. I was one of the Silly Girls." During their Las Vegas visit, Castroneves and Hough, the "Dancing" favorites, had lunch Friday at Wayne Newton's estate and got a tour.

NORM: Kid Rock calls off Tommy Lee fight.

Kid Rock has thrown in the towel on the proposed pay-per-view grudge match with Tommy Lee.

Rock made it clear Monday the fight was going nowhere during an appearance on the Howard Stern Show, which included a verbal confrontation by telephone between Rock and "Beacher's Madhouse" producer Jeff Beacher.

Rock, who was charged with misdemeanor battery for whacking Lee during the broadcast of the MTV Video Music Awards Sept. 9 at the Palms, said he wanted $250,000 up front before talking to Beacher.

Beacher, in a collaboration with boxing promoter Bob Arum, had offered a $5 million winner-take-all deal to Rock and Lee.

When Stern brought Beacher on the show, Rock clammed up. Afterward, Beacher told me, "Kid Rock should pay me $250,000 for keeping him in the press and helping to sell his album.'

During the interview with Stern, Rock took a couple of more shots at ex-wife Pamela Anderson, who got married to Rick Salomon on Saturday in Las Vegas.

When Stern asked Rock why his 2006 marriage to Anderson ended so quickly, Rock said it was all about the money: He had it and she didn't.

Stern pressed for more details, but Rock said he could get in legal trouble for talking about the failed relationship.

When Stern asked Rock if Anderson was worth less than $3 million, Rock nodded.

Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton was ousted from ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" on Tuesday night. Newton and partner Cheryl Burke were back in the bottom two for the second week in a row, but this time it was Las Vegan Floyd Mayweather Jr., the boxing champion, who survived. Newton, the oldest participant at age 65 in the show's history, and Burke scored an 18 (out of 30) this week for their tango.

Circus On The Edge
Release your inhibitions with Zumanity.
By: Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine.

“As the sun sets, desire comes alive in this world we call Zumanity,” says the Mistress of Seduction, the provocative, gender-straddling emcee, as Cirque du Soleil’s foray into sexuality gets under way. The enchanting diva serves as an experienced guide, setting the mood and easing the audience into an edgy, unpredictable evening of lusty fun.

Not quite as circuslike as Cirque’s other productions, and not quite the zoo that the title implies (think along the lines of animal instincts, instead of live animals), Zumanity has resided for three years in the comfortable median between the two, embracing traditional Cirque acrobatic feats while adding a carnal twist. Genders bend, limbs contort, bodies writhe and gravity is defied. No one—audience or cast alike—is safe. Daring acrobatics break through the fourth wall with grace, power and passion. The curvaceous Botero sisters, clad in matching maid outfits, treat the audience to a delicious prelude of hand-fed strawberries as the theater fills up.

However, a production number in Zumanity sums up the entire spirit of the desire-fulfilling tour of sexuality: A blond ingénue in a schoolgirl’s outfit greets the audience holding a pair of hula hoops. She begins to spin the hoops expertly around her body while wrapping the ends of bungee cables around her hands. Within seconds, she propels herself skyward, using the cables as her harness, performing a series of aerial acrobatics (while still gyrating with those hoops!) that leaves the viewer breathless.

It’s the kind of number that becomes par for the course as the show progresses, as sexuality, contortions, acrobatics, song and dance blend seamlessly in a parade of acts. Tribal rhythms fuel the fire, and primal urges are explored. A male cage fight evolves into a heated expression of passion. Synchronized swimmers contort in impossible positions. The male pastime of “watching the game” is redefined in an all-out sexual romp. Ladies will get a kick out of Alex, whose chiseled abs elicit more than a few screams of joy during a sensual striptease.

Pulling it all together in a climactic full-company orgy—where participants remain partially clothed, but inhibitions are doffed—is the Mistress of Seduction, who reminds the audience, now one with the human zoo, “You can’t keep love locked in your bedroom.” Zumanity unlocks those secret passions that you never knew, or knew but never wanted to admit, existed. Do yourself a naughty favor and take yourself—better yet, drag yourself—to the gates of the human zoo.

Sports Fan's Dream
Harrah's offers it all at the Sports Pit.

By: Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine

Walking into the new Sports Pit at Harrah’s, the first thing you notice are the 40 high-definition plasma screens and two 100-inch high-definition projectors. Televisions built into every blackjack table ensure fans can keep an eye on their favorite game and their cards.

Six blackjack tables, a craps table, an LCD keno board and video poker machines help define the intimate area, which features granite bar tops, zebra wood accents and textured walls with shades of burgundy, green and orange.

Fans can make a bet on a race or a ballgame, then relax at the bar or enjoy blackjack or craps while watching the action beamed in via satellite on numerous TVs.

“It’s an ultra lounge for sports buffs,” said Don Marrandino, president of Harrah’s, whose vision was to create a young, cool vibe that lasts well after the last game is played.

“Every sports book in town closes up at 8 or 9 o’clock, and it takes a lot of real estate in the casino,” Marrandino said. “We decided to put some table games in there, so you make a bet and sit at a table game. We have TVs to watch your game right at your table.”

The Sports Pit represents a new environment that incorporates many diverse elements—hip music on a pristine sound system; a multimedia presentation on the TV screens as the overhead lights dim; a cozy bar; deli; and luxurious seating.

Whether it’s the food, the beverages, the action on the television screens or the action at the tables, Marrandino is convinced there’s something for everyone.

“People come to Las Vegas to experience the best in gaming, and the new Sports Pit at Harrah’s is a one-stop location that meets all of their needs,” Marrandino said. “The combination of a race and sports book and gaming pit allows players to be in action while in action.”

In contrast to most sports books, which become nearly vacant late at night, Harrah’s has created a vibrant place to meet friends or discuss the day’s sports action long after the last down or the last out is played, letting the fun continue through the night.

Slot Reviews By Gayle Mitchell

Lady Orleans: Atronic. 88-92%. 3 spins.

There are four versions of this slot and for this review, we focus on Michelle who holds the key to the top jackpot and is the reigning wild symbol doubling all jackpots.

Five ‘Michelles’ translates into the ‘big strike’ for 260,000 credits at the 21 line version.

The mask symbol, when gathered in threes, starts a 15 free game event where all jackpots are tripled. As usual, these days, re-spins can occur with this free game event.

Also, this slot offers a Mystery Jackpot progressive that hits at random for as much as a whopping $1million. The Sinatra tune comes to mind: “Luck Be a Lady Tonight”.

2) Fountain of Youth: Atronic. 86-96% 3 spins

This slot can be lucrative because of the frequent emergence of a ‘beautiful lady’ wild symbol.

Additionally, the appearance of the Fountain of Youth icon is a scatter pay win.

Line up 3, 4 or 5 Fountains of Youth and begin a 10, 14, or 25 free spin bonus round.

Before you begin, make your choice of a favorite ‘symbol of youth’—deer, water lily, waterleaf or a water cup which will trigger additional freebie spins.

While not necessary to play max coin at all times, this game only requires you to cover all the paylines. This game is a hoot for all players ‘young at heart’.

3) Grizzly: Aristocrat
. 88-95%. 3 spins
You are on a fishing trip with a twist—using a grizzly bear character to obtain mounting credits.

Set in the wilderness with the usual outstanding graphics and audio that is an Aristocrat standard, you search for three bear paw icons to move to the bonus round.

At that time, you move the bear to capture fish moving upstream. Your final bonus reward is based on color and number of fish captured.

There’s more…12 free games at which time, re-triggering can occur for added free games.

Making a ‘great catch’ can result in a 50X generous award.

4) It’s Raining Cash:
AC Coin. 83-93%. 3 spins
Another addition to the popular Slotto series, the lottery themed game with a giant sphere features a chamber with an umbrella that, when triggered, ‘rains cash’.

The three reel version is the game Triple Stars, while the five reel version is Double Diamond.

Triple Stars includes wild symbols that triples the jackpot and multiplies the win X 9 if two land on a payline with a jackpot symbol. The five reel Double Diamond doubles the jackpot in a nine line format.

Three “It’s Raining Cash’ symbols activate the main bonus event where 3 umbrellas rotate displaying cascading bonus amounts.

The bonus is accompanied by the music of the Weather Girls singing “It’s Raining Men”.

In the end, all this rain ‘drops’ a multiplied credit into your winning hands.

5) The Big Game Show Bonus Slotto: A. C. Coin
This is a slot machine with a lottery-style bonus Slotto game that is unlike any other Slotto-style game and has earned its top spot as one of AC Coin & Slot’s most popular product launches.

Big Game Show offers a slot experience coupled with a game board event and a lottery bonus ball event, resulting in a slightly different activity for players with each event and increased excitement overall.

As a themed lottery-style bonus game, The Big Game Show Bonus slot simulates a television game show, enhanced with a lottery sphere bonus event.  Once a player engages the game and initiates the bonus event, he or she experiences a simulated skill-stop feature that allows that player to control the start of the bonus.  The patented Slotto feature then drops down the winning symbol on a lottery ball.

Big Game Show has since been released to jurisdictions across North America and has enjoyed rapid acceptance in numerous gaming jurisdictions.  In fact, Big Game Show boasts the highest order rate for an AC Coin product thus far in 2007.

There is always a welcome mat out to new subscribers.

SHOW REVIEW: Hypnotist Marshall Sylver
Little Bang for the Buck: It takes a long time to get to the good stuff during hypnotist show.

By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas review Journal

It's easy to get jealous of the volunteers in a hypnosis show. Not because they get to hop around like the cartoon Road Runner and go "beep beep," but because they get to sleep through the boring parts.

"Marshall Sylver Presents The World's Funniest Hypnotists" is better than its convoluted title, but it could improve its ratio of comic payoff to total running time.

If you have never seen stage hypnotism before, the induction process can be fascinating to first-timers. Otherwise, you know it's just a necessary ritual before you get to the good stuff: usually a crash course on hypnosis, followed by the mood lighting and celestial music while the mesmerist entrances his volunteers and thins the herd — close to 30 at this show, gleaned to a baker's dozen.

Keeping the Magic Alive
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal

Magic has always been a major part of the entertainment scene in Las Vegas, and no one has had more success than Lance Burton who is now in his 11th year performing at the Monte Carlo in a theater named for him. I went to see his show the other night, the first time in more than a year, and though it was a weeknight, the place was packed and the show ended with a well-deserved standing O.

You would think that putting on a show almost nightly for more than 10 years would get a little tiring, a little stale, but Burton has been able to keep his show fresh and his enthusiasm high. One of the reasons - and there are many - for the success of the show is that it is one of the few shows in Las Vegas that the whole family can enjoy. Each night he performs, Burton makes it a point to include kids from the audience in his act. Not only do they love it, but the audience does as well. Entertainers of any kind have to have a connection to their audiences, and by Burton making this gesture, he endears himself to every parent sitting in the theater.

Looking back over his run, he had this to say: "The past 11 years seems like it's been a roller coaster ride for my show at the Monte Carlo. Opening night on June 21, 1996, and the 10th anniversary on June, 21, 2006, were two of the most memorable evenings for me. Celebrating the show's opening and the 10th anniversary of the success of my show "Lance Burton: Master Magician" and the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino was a dream come true. I recall hundreds of VIPs, my colleagues in the magic world, my employees, the media and hotel-casino executives on two of the most festive nights of my life. It was also gratifying that my family could be with me.

"During the past 11 of the 25 years that I've been performing in Las Vegas, I've had the opportunity to produce and own five TV specials: On the Road, The Encounter, The Legend Begins, Top Secret and Young Magician's Showcase."

He says the three most unforgettable minutes on stage occurred "when I did The Death Tank for The Encounter before a live audience. It was the most breath-taking and breath-holding escape that I've ever done while submerged in a tank full of water (the size of a telephone booth). I had to get out alive, but the tank was chained and locked shut while I was strapped into a regulation straitjacket. It was such a surreal experience as the audience sat on the edge of their seats.

"One of the neatest things about performing in a top hotel on the Las Vegas Strip was the celebrities who came to my show and I was able to meet. Carl Reiner was filming Ocean's 11 and came in by himself to see the show. Film legend Tony Curtis who played Houdini came to the show and joined me on stage while I did the upside-down straitjacket escape dedicating the Houdini commemorative stamp for the United States Postal Service. Diane Keaton was one of the most recent stars to see the show with her grandchildren.

"I never thought I'd be on America's Most Wanted, but John Walsh invited me to co-host the show. The late Don Knotts was one of my favorites and also had seen me at the Hacienda (where Mandalay Bay now sits). Nicholas Cage, Dana Carvey, Shaquille O'Neal, Criss Angel, Wayne Brady, Pete Rose, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, Michael Jackson, Bruce Willis, Steve Martin, Hugh Jackman and Hugh O'Brian were some of the famous who took in my magic show."

Along the way he and the show have been named "Best Entertainer," "Best Showroom," "Best Value," "Best Family Show" and "Best Magician" numerous times in the annual Las Vegas Review-Journal's Best of Las Vegas.

"It was gratifying to be so recognized by the media. I also treasure awards from The Shriners, the Variety Club and Optiminists International along with many other charitable organizations. The real reward was giving back."

And that he has, giving his time and talent free of charge to a number of charities in Las Vegas to help raise funds. It won't come as any surprise to anyone who has seen his show, or who knows the man, to see him performing for another 10 years in the same theatre.

The Wiser Approach.

An Offer You Must Refuse
Beware the 6-5 blackjack payout
by Rob Wiser/Casino Player Magazine.

A few years ago, I was playing host to a friend of mine from out of town. He’d never gambled in a Vegas casino and was eager to take a shot, so I took him to the Strip.

He inquired about the various games and asked which one he should play. I explained to him why blackjack was the best game in the casino, since with a good set of rules and the correct playing strategy, you can almost neutralize the house edge. So we sat down at a table and exchanged our cash for chips. I was about to show this rookie how it was done.

On my second hand, I scored a 10 and an ace. Twenty-one, baby—a blackjack, or a “natural.” I had a $30 bet on the table, which would mean a nice $45 payout.

But then the dealer made a mistake—at least I thought he did. He paid me $36.

CASINO 101.

Well Excuuuuuse Me!
Casinos have an extensive list of dos and don’ts
by Kevin Blackwood/Casino Player Magazine

What do bull-riding and shooting craps have in common? No, the answer isn’t that either way you’ll get your butt kicked; nor does it have anything to do with the horn bet. The common denominator in both activities is that using two hands is against the rules.

If you’re a long-time craps player, you know what I’m talking about—the shooter can only touch the dice with one hand. Using both hands (or any other body part including your lovely companion’s lips for a good luck smooch) will earn you a reprimand from the pit boss and an eye-roll from the veteran players around the table as the pit crew halts the game to examine the dice for irregularities. After all, this isn’t your neighborhood Yahtzee game. Casinos are a very serious business and stringently controlled.

WMS’ Sweepstakes introduces its groundbreaking new Monopoly game
by Frank Legato/Strictly Slots Magazine

WMS Gaming has launched yet another slot game that is nothing like anything else in a casino. And, once again, the slot manufacturer is doing all it can to let players know.

Last year, WMS launched the “Powerball” multi-progressive video slot. Just as the video slot’s technology was brand-new, so was the way in which the slot-maker got the word out about the new game. Using its website, www.wms.com, WMS launched a sweepstakes that gave players the chance to win money while at the same time learning all about Powerball.

Early this year, the manufacturer did the same thing with “Monopoly Big Event,” the Monopoly game featuring a communal bonus event played by several players on a common overhead screen.

Penny Lane.

Why we love to play those low-denom slots
by Frank Legato/Strictly Slots Magazine

Young casino-goers may not remember, but it wasn’t that long ago that the lowest buy-in you could generally find on the casino floor was a quarter.

Little more than a decade ago, quarters ruled the floor, mostly in the form of traditional games with three spinning reels. Three developments over the ensuing 10 years, though, would change everything.

Multi-line video begat nickels. Nickels begat tickets. Tickets begat pennies. We haven’t looked back since.

Fremont Street Experience Introduces Real Action Stunt Performances.
Spectacular New Acts Bring Thrills to Downtown’s Exciting Street Scene.

Visitors to Las Vegas’ famous Fremont Street Experience are getting even more free entertainment options with the addition of the Real Action Stunt Stage. Located at the 1st Street intersection near the Golden Nugget and Binion’s, the stage features live action performances nightly to include the Russian Bar, cube balancing and a flying silk act. Each act is unique, awe-inspiring and designed to evoke a sense of complete amazement from the audience.

The Russian Bar is a gymnastic act that combines the elements of balance, aerial and acrobatic techniques. A thin, flexible bar, suspended between the shoulders of two sturdy holders, is used to propel a flyer high into the air. Executing a series of flips, twists and somersaults, the flyer then lands in perfect balance—back on the bar.

Cube balancing consists of an artist working with an enormous metal cube to create completely enthralling visuals. Spinning and propelling the cube around the head, body and the palm of the hand, the artist’s dizzying dexterity is not to be believed as the cube itself catches the light and transforms into a shimmering whirlwind of rainbow colors.

A flying silk act is the perfect addition to any entertainment extravaganza—but none so more than at the Fremont Street Experience, where the aerialist is actually suspended from the 90-foot Viva Vision canopy. Soaring in graceful circles, high above the heads of the crowd, the aerialist and the silk blend together in a series of beautiful twists and turns.

“We want to give our visitors an experience that’s on par with what they expect of Las Vegas,” said Lisa Robinson, director of marketing for Fremont Street Experience. “A night out in Vegas should be dazzling, exciting and one-of-a-kind—and the Real Action Stunt Stage definitely plays a big part in that.”

Real Action Stunt Performances go on nightly at 8:15 pm and 10:15 pm. Riders of the Thunderdome perform Thursday through Saturday at 9:15 pm and 11:15 pm. Live bands perform from the 3rd Street stage seven nights a week, times vary. Nightly shows on the Viva Vision screen appear at 8:30 pm, 9 pm, 10 pm, 11 pm, and 12 am from August 1-18. Beginning August 19, the first show of the evening will be at 8 pm. All shows and performances at the Fremont Street Experience are free and open to the public.

Ample parking is available at the Fremont Street Experience parking garage located on the corner of Carson and 4th Streets or at any of the legendary casinos that line historic Fremont Street. For more information call 702-678-5600.

Second-Mortgage Dining: Top Five Sinful Vegas Dining Experiences.

Five places to eat like a million bucks.
From:www.vegaspopblog.com

In most towns across America, there are a handful of restaurants to go to for special occasions. For anniversaries, birthdays and other causes of celebration, we put on our Sunday clothes and head to the fanciest place in town.

Vegas is a little different. Almost every day here is a special occasion and picking the fanciest place in town is a little more difficult. The town has been built on fantasy and excess and fancy is a byproduct. Even a hot dog, onion rings and Coca-Cola at Nathan's will set you back $11.

In the old days, it seemed casinos had the one nice restaurant, the diner, the buffet and one or two casual restaurants. Today, the top luxury resorts have multiple high-end eateries by the world's most famous chefs. With all of the marquee chefs at resorts like the Venetian, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and Caesars Palace, a trip to Vegas is like some sort of Food Channel interactive experience.

I admit the title of this column is a little dramatic. None of these meals will force you to take out a second mortgage to afford their delicious expense. However, when you plan your next trip, or your next night out in Vegas, budget some extra cash for one or more of these five extravagant Vegas dining experiences:

Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay
I like watching Chef Hubert Keller's 'Secrets of a Chef' cooking show on television. From his unassuming style comes some of the most assuming food, gorgeous and yummy. In Vegas, he has more than one restaurant, which gives the diner multiple options to luxuriate.

If you're feeling casual chic, grab a table at Burger Bar, where the great American pasttime gets gourmet treatment. You can try the $25 surf and turf burger topped with lobster. To take the fancy up a notch, make reservations at Chef Keller's Fleur de Lys restaurant also at Mandalay Bay. Look past the champagne cocktails with 24K gold flakes and the live floral sculpture featuring 3,000 fresh roses and focus on the menu, particularly the Kobe Beef FleurBurger "Rossini" (pictured). It's a nice hunk of revered Kobe beef that is topped with foie gras and black trufflIes. They offer it with a 1990 bottle of Chateau Petrus for $5,000.

The "$5,000 burger" was all over the blogs when the restaurant announced the offering, but that's like saying there's a $50,000 burger out there that is served with a side of a Mercedes-Benz. You can order the burger as a course in one of the prix fixe options or slap down $75 for just the burger.

I've read criticism about the restaurant for having the audacity to serve a $75 burger, here is the deal with $75 burgers: they're worth every last cent. I'll go as far to say that if you're a vegetarian, you should eat a $75 burger before you die. They're that good.

Joel Robuchon at MGM Grand
Luxury should be French super chef Joel Robuchon's middle name. I feel fancy just walking into his eponymous restaurant at MGM Grand even before I've looked at the menu.

Gordon Ramsay recently stated that he would want the main course of his last meal on Earth to be prepared by Chef Robuchon, his one-time mentor. Incidentally, Chef Ramsay would want the appetizer for that same last meal to be prepared by another French super chef with a Vegas restaurant, Alain Ducasse.

Other than some marble, chandeliers, French cuisine and accolades of the greatest chef of this generation, what makes the Joel Robuchon experience so extravagant? Go for the 16-course tasting menu. Tasting menus are all the rage with chefs because it's a great way for them to tap into their creative culinary muses and the eater gets to sample a little bit of everything. It is 16 courses so even at $365 a person, it seems like a relatively good deal, but in my opinion, the real extravagance is just being able to sit down at a table and have 16 courses, flowing in and out over the course of a meal. It feels very royal.

Sterling Brunch at Bally's
Bellagio has consistently been recognized as having one of the best buffets in Vegas. It has also been around the top tier of priciest buffets. However, nothing compares to the Sterling Brunch at Bally's Steakhouse on Sundays. At $58 per person, it is the most expensive buffet in town but worth it. The display is deliciously gaudy, but among the typical breakfast buffet fare, you'll find lobster, sushi, caviar and even ostrich on occasion — and of course, plenty of champagne.

Nothing says extravagance like champagne on a Sunday morning.

Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace
The French really know how to treat a stomach. That sounds weird, but the point is French, as a cuisine, gives us some of the tastiest dishes known to man and French restaurants are among the priciest.

Restaurant Guy Savoy at Caesars Palace is no different: some of the best food on the planet and priced accordingly. The tasting menu at his eponymous restaurant in Paris is among the world's most expensive along with Alain Ducasse's. They all tend to run in the same chef circles with Chef Savoy also noted by Chef Ramsay as a mentor.

Chef Savoy's Vegas tasting menu is just shy of $300, but in the spirit of luxurious dining, you should just dive into the menu. Even the photo of the prime beef tenderloin looks good enough to eat and if you order the right dinner for two, with wine and gratuity, you're looking at $1,000. That's good taste.

Alex at the Wynn
For the next entry, we're staying in the Mediterranean region with Alex at Wynn. Everything about Alex Stratta's restaurant at the Wynn is rich — the architecture, the interiors and more importantly, the food.

As I said earlier, tasting menus are all the rage and the seven-course tasting menu that starts yellowtail, sea scallops and foie gras is worth a gander.

For that extra special experience, reserve the chef's table and eat in the kitchen. Sure, you miss out on the lush dining room experience but in a restaurant, eating at the chef's table is like rolling VIP. Plus at more than $200 a person with a nine person minimum, it's very VIP.

I guess that makes it VVIP?

LITTLE PEOPLE STAR IN `LITTLE LEGENDS’ AT HARMONMini Britney, Mini Madonna, Mini Milli Vanilli, Mini Village People…

“Little Legends” is a showbiz first for the world because it’s the only show headlined by Little People at the Harmon Theatre in Krave.

Celebrity impersonator Terra Jole sings live as Mini Britney, Mini Madonna, Mini Alanis Morisette and Mini Cher. The San Antonio native began singing, dancing and acting at age 5. Terra has been featured on “Chelsea Lately,” “Access Hollywood,” “E! Daily Top 10,” “The Daily Show with John Stewart,” “Austin Powers 3,” “The Osbournes” and CNN. Janet Jackson said, “I totally enjoyed you!” At 4’2” she celebrates the pop icon with her huge spirit and showmanship.  You may have seen her on TLC’s “Little People, Big Terra Jole a.k.a. Mini Britney” or the MTV special “True Life: I’m a Little Person.”

Comedian/magician Jeff Hobson is the emcee and likes to be known as “The Hilarious Host of Las Vegas” and now he’s the host of “Little Legends.” The unpretentious Detroit native is one of the best watch thieves you will ever witness but not too worry he always gives it back. As host of “Little Legends” his comical barbs and lightning tongue is entertaining. Jeff’s honed his act like a star with a little bit of Paul Lynde and the fancy clothes a la Liberace. Jeff Hobson has opened the following headliners: Lee Greenwood, Barbara Mandrel, Louise Mandrel, Phyllis Diller, David Sanborn, Steve Allen and Roy Clark.  He said, “I came to Las Vegas to perform at `Catch a Rising Star’ at Bally’s in the late ‘80s.” He and his wife have three children ages 9, 11 and 13.”

Adam and Abdoul Kone were born in West Africa and at 4’0” they could be twins but they are brothers. The duo performs as Mini Milli Vanilli and Michael Jacksons twins. They are also acrobatic dancers for Mini Britney. The brothers were born in the Ivory Coast of Africa. They are 32 and 34 years old. Their home is in the Long Beach and LA area but they moved to Las Vegas for “Little Legends.” Their manager Terry said, “They like not having to travel to perform. They had never heard of Milli Vanilli so I searched the Internet and they watched the DVD for about three hours. They created their own act. They speak an African dialect of French. A lot of stars have seen them in the Universal Circus. We’re tired of traveling and like Las Vegas.”

Antonio Hoyos performs as Dean Martin, Sonny Bono and a magician named “The Great Antoine.”  Antonio said, “We now have a Tommy Lee in the show that plays the drums. He looks just like the musician. The Village People are one of the newest and greatest acts in `Little Legends.’ The grand opening will be in October.  They are always looking for Little People with talent to tryout for the show’s cast. It’s a great show with a lot of entertainment value. I love working in it

“Little Legends” a.k.a. “Little People, Big Show” times are at 7 p.m. Tuesday thru Sunday (dark Mondays). The Mini Happy Hour begins at 6 p.m. when the doors open. Show ticket prices are $35 general admission and $49 (VIP) plus tax and service fee.  Call the Harmon Theatre Box-Office at 702.836.0836. The Harmon Theatre is located in Krave on the south side of the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

The Pizza Quest has ended! By Newsletter Member Marcia.

Last week I had the good fortune to receive an invitation to the Grand
Opening of Grimaldi's Coal Brick-Oven Pizza. http://www.grimaldis.com/
& http://www.patsygrimaldis.com/default.asp  I found someone who had
the good sense to agree to join me there. We feasted on several types
of salads, pizzas and deserts and everyone I spoke to RAVED about
everything they ate. I had Caesar & Caprese Salads, I saw others
eating the Mediterranean salad. They also had Antipasto and their
House Salad. I saw plain pizza, white pizza, pesto pizza, pizza with
variety of toppings. Calzone (didn't see that until we were leaving,
STUFFED). They served several flavors of cheesecake, and cannoli, but
the tiramisu was so good that I just had more of it.

They're located on Eastern, just south of 215 and across from the
shopping center where Heidi's and Makino are located. I spoke to
several people who'd driven much farther than I would have, and they
said they drive there again. It is absolutely worth the time.

A 12" plain pizza is $9, 16" $13, 18" $15. Toppings are additional.

Yes, they have a bar. I have no idea what the prices are for drinks,
they're not on the menu.

Their menu is posted on their website and they are open daily from
11am until midnight.

Vegas Wins Top Chef
My friend 29-year-old Hung Huynh was named the winner of the third season of Bravo's Top Chef on Wednesday.  Hung is the third contestant that I was able to place on the show Steven and Marcel gave a great show in the two previous seasons but, in the end, Hung took the crown.  I am very proud of him.

The Massachusetts-born Las Vegas resident looked beyond thrilled when host Padma Lakshmi informed him that his knives were there to stay during the live finale in Chicago.

"I am so excited!" Huynh exclaimed. "I worked so hard to get here and prove myself…I'm speechless, but I'm sure you'll hear more from me later."

In addition to bragging rights, Huynh wins $100,000 to put toward his culinary-minded dreams, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, an appearance at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and an epicurean dream tour of the French Alps.

Master chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck is bringing his critically acclaimed, award-winning restaurant CUT to Las Vegas. CUT will mark the sixth fine-dining restaurant from the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group in Las Vegas.

Noted food critic John Mariani awarded CUT, "Restaurant of the Year" in the November 2006 issue of "Esquire" magazine, less than six months after it opened. In April 2007, CUT was nominated for "Best New Restaurant" by the James Beard Foundation, considered one of the highest marks of distinction within the culinary community, and in August 2007, "Bon Appétit" magazine named CUT one of the top three steakhouses in the nation.

The interior will be a modern interpretation of a classic steakhouse with welcoming custom-made, large, bronzed glass doors, custom-designed lighting and rich textures such as a basket woven felt wall that will provide a soft white architectural envelope accented by bronze mirrors, honed limestone and custom-walnut flooring. Sculpted chairs of minimalist design will offer a unique form that combines the warm texture of aged leather with glossy ebonized ironwood. Leather table tops framed in brushed metal will provide a contrast to the English Windsor wood slab tables that will occupy the center of the space.

Adjacent to the 160-seat main dining room will be an upscale 60-seat bar and lounge showcasing exclusive custom cocktails, classic drinks and a smaller menu featuring CUT's popular appetizers such as the Mini Kobe Beef Sliders. The lounge will feature an eight-foot tall upholstered sofa in rich black pony-style fabric offset by vibrant cherry lacquer cocktail tables providing a perfect vantage point to people watch.

Private dining space also will be available featuring a fully retractable bronze glass wall that will open to a contemporary wine wall located just outside the kitchen, offering patrons a backstage glimpse into the bustling kitchen.
