NORM: Scintas looking to re-enter LV scene

The Scintas will return to the Las Vegas Hilton, site of their first headliner residency.

An announcement is expected this week that the popular Buffalo, N.Y., group is opening late next month in the Shimmer Cabaret, where they spent a year, starting in early 2000, before taking a long-term deal at the Rio.

Scintas members were seen touring the venue Monday.

We hear they will perform Fridays through Wednesday at 9:30 p.m., along with a 2 p.m. Monday matinee. They will share the venue with "Menopause The Musical."

COMEDY, ITALIAN STYLE

A new show this Thursday and Friday at the Empire Ballroom should be a lot of fun. It's Joey & Maria's Comedy Italian Wedding, an interactive show that I'm sure will produce a lot of laughs and shouting. The two-hour dinner show begins at 6 p.m. (complete with Italian Buffet and wedding cake) and will run every Thursday and Friday. It will share the stage with another very funny show, The Sopranos Last Supper.

In case you don't know, the Empire Ballroom is located behind Walgreen's on the Strip. For a limited engagement, September though December, Joey & Maria's will be getting married 15 times at the Riviera, so call the Riv Box Office at 702-794-9433 for ticket info. If you're going to see it at the Empire Ballroom, call 702-733-8669.

Three Elvis Presley impersonators with extensive Las Vegas backgrounds finished 1-2-3 in the first "Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist" Friday night in Memphis, Tenn. Shawn Klush, a "Legends in Concert" performer, outscored Sahara headliner Trent Carlini and Donny Edwards of Las Vegas. Because of misinformation received from Carlini's agent, it was erroneously reported here Saturday that Carlini had won the competition. Carlini, who won ABC's "The Next Best Thing" competition last month, was an easy winner of USA Today's favorite Elvis based on reader responses to videos of 10 finalists in the "Ultimate Elvis" contest.

Ventriloquist Terry Fator, who won NBC's "America's Got Talent" Tuesday night and a $1 million prize, has been booked at the Las Vegas Hilton on Sunday, Oct. 14, in the main showroom.See him at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnVDHzUAj30

Madonna and Justin Timberlake will team up at the MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms on Sept. 9, according to Entertainment Tonight Canada.

The hunch here is they will open the show if Britney Spears continues her flaky behavior and backs out.

Following fast on the heels of recent news that the Tropicana's remodel will be delayed due to the current financial climate, comes the announcement that the $95 million purchase of Hooters hotel-casino has been "slowed" for the same reason. FAERIE GOOD TIME

The first "Midsummer Night's Dream" turned into a dream event for the Palms.

More than 2,000 revelers paid between $100 and $200 to attend the inaugural Las Vegas version of Playboy's annual soiree at Hugh Hefner's famous Los Angeles mansion.

Palms owner George Maloof said the poolside lingerie and masquerade event Saturday night exceeded expectations and will become an annual event.

The surprise, Maloof said, was that so many got caught up in the spirit of the event. Elizabethan faerie outfits outnumbered all others, while some brave souls wore little more than well-placed layers of paint.

"The costumes made the evening," Maloof said. Interest in the event was so high, he said, "next year we're going to sell masks at the door."

"We heard Frederick's of Hollywood had a big rush the last couple days," he added.

Attendees included NBA stars LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire; rapper Nelly; Criss Angel, with Anna Nicole Smith's longtime bodyguard, Cory Ardizzone; UFC star Chuck Liddell; porn icon Ron Jeremy; former Duke basketball star J.J. Reddick; Playboy's Alison Waite, runner-up for 2007 Playmate of the Year, with beau Jon Gray; "Top Chef" runner-up Marcel Vigneron; Las Vegas City Councilman Lawrence Weekly, in an all-white suit, and former Clark County Commissioner Michael McDonald, with a gold mask.

SENIOR IDOL

Now for something for that group of people that I can relate to. It will soon be time for the annual City of Las Vegas Senior Idol Talent Show. If you're 50 or older (do they have to call us "seniors" once we pass 50?) and think you can sing, dance, play an instrument, or perform comedy, call the Las Vegas Senior Center at 702-229-6454 to request an audition registration packet be mailed to you. Or you can pick one up at the center, located at 451 East Bonanza Rd. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. on Friday, August 31. Audition times are being scheduled as completed registrations are received. Auditions will be held September 20 and 21 by appointment only. There is no audition fee. Individual and group acts are welcome, provided the 32-by-36-foot stage can handle the act. In case you do magic, use of fire isn't allowed.

"Last year about 300 people enjoyed dancers, singers, comedians - even a rapping granny," said Center coordinator Lettie Peters. "Las Vegas has an abundance of talented older adults and retired professional performers who like to show their abilities."

The 4th annual Senior Idol Talent show will be held Thursday, November 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, located at 800 South Brush St. Doors will open at 3 p.m. Tickets for this family show are priced $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Advance tickets will go on sale at the Las Vegas Senior Center October 1. For more information, call the Center at 702-229-6454. Should be great fun.

About Ronn Lucas

Though he arrived a bit late in the summer, ventriloquist Ronn Lucas has made good his jump to Luxor. Word started spreading in June that Lucas was bailing out of Steve Wyrick's theater in the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood. He closed shop there June 30 and didn't resurface until Aug. 12, losing a potentially lucrative July for the family-friendly matinee.

Regardless, the first Luxor week was "gangbusters," says producer Adam Steck, who also oversees Louie Anderson and "Thunder from Down Under" next door at Excalibur. Lucas shares the Atrium Showroom with two evening shows, Carrot Top and "Fantasy."

COMEDY'S BACK ON TRACK

A new club at Palace Station presenting only headliners twice a night is out to capitalize on the entertainment form's resurgent popularity.
By Jerry Fink /Las Vegas Sun

Comedy gets the last laugh at Palace Station.

The former Laugh Trax comedy club closed there in 2005 after a four-year run and became Sound Trax, a music venue. Dynamic Vegas entertainer Earl Turner took over the room and was the headliner until January.

But the 150-seat room was underused until a couple of weeks ago , when the former Trax became the L.A. Comedy Club.

"We're always looking to have a diverse entertainment offering to our customers," said Joseph Santiago, Station Casinos' vice president of entertainment. "We looked at several things."

BOOK FIREWORKS

Siegfried and Roy will officially come out of the closet in their upcoming autobiography, according to leaked reports.

While it won't come as a surprise to many locals, the relationship evolved from intimate partners to business partners and lifelong friends.

Meanwhile, I'm hearing that a Sept. 12 hearing probably will reveal more details about Siegfried and Roy's inner circle, including the bodyguards who have a book coming out early next year, around the same time the German illusionists will have their own book out.

The hearing deals with a lawsuit filed by Jim Lavery, one of the bodyguard-authors of "Buried Elephants: Siegfried & Roy's Secrets Revealed." He is suing his ex-girlfriend, Lynette Chappelle, an associate of Siegfried and Roy.

Lavery isn't talking, other than this cryptic comment: "I'm from Georgia. You don't mess with my mom and you don't mess with my dogs."

Lavery's co-authors are Jim Mydlach, a former Elvis Presley bodyguard, and his son, Lou Mydlach, both of whom worked security for the entertainers.

Wynn, who hired Siegfried and Roy for their Mirage megashow, is no fan of the co-authors. "Considering how Siegfried and Roy took care of that family all the time, even after the accident, they are sub-normals, flakeroos," Wynn said.

$95 million addition will include hotel, conference space

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

South Point has begun a $95 million expansion to meet demand for more convention space and hotel rooms, owner Michael Gaughan said.

The project includes a 25-story, 830-room hotel tower, nearly 10,000 square feet of conference space, two new restaurants and three bars.

"What's happened to me is I've started to do bigger convention business than I thought I would do," Gaughan said. "The problem I have is, I have no overflow rooms."

The restaurants and bars are scheduled to open by the end of the year. The hotel tower is scheduled to finish in July.

The Mirage : The VegasTripping Review 2007

Las Vegas changed forever after Steve Wynn opened The Mirage in November 1989. Gone were the days of the $2.99 steaks and cheapo floor shows to be replaced by four star dining, blockbuster shows, family attractions and anything else that could generate profit. In the years that followed, themed family resorts with similar business models replaced the older resorts. As the skyline of Las Vegas added a number of new shapes, the quality of offerings increased and so did the price. Between the mid-1970's and the opening of Mirage in 1989 no new resorts were built on the Las Vegas Strip. Suddenly, much like today, construction cranes were everywhere.

Fast forward nearly 20 years and The Mirage is now one of the middle-tier resorts skimming along with periodic upgrades that hope to keep it from slipping into the ether or - best case scenario - to propel it back to its 1990's glory years. The Mirage still has retained its cache as a luxury resort, mostly due to its history and partly due to the continual upgrades to Mirage's public areas and entertainment offerings. In the last two years Mirage has completely redone most of its restaurants, upgraded it's entertainment (except Danny Gans) redesigned public areas and hammered out some of the dents and dings that two decades of use have made apparent. The last major upgrade of the rooms at the Mirage were completed in 2002. Do all of these upgrades carry enough weight to vault the Mirage back into the highest echelon of Las Vegas resorts? Probably not, but they certainly will keep the resort competitive for years to come.

Happiest Place On Earth And Then Some

Las Vegas has proudly worn the badge of “Entertainment Capital of the World” for many years now, but it wasn’t until recently that this claim began to show its full potential. With Labor Day weekend fast approaching we are now seeing what amounts to a build up for one of the largest city-wide parties anywhere. New Years Eve and the Super Bowl have long provided big boosts to the city’s economy, but with the debut of multiple nightlife venues and competition at the existing ones already reaching astronomic levels, we just may be seeing Las Vegas emerge as something that adds up to more than the some of its parts.

Who would have thought free market capitalism would produce a metropolis set afire with nearly unbridled cash-fuelled hedonism. But to be perfectly fair to the industry, this Labor Day weekend represents more than mere orgiastic partying- there is much talent, creativity and innovation behind these remarkable palace parties, and in the end, what determines which venues will leave the most enduring impressions will be just how well these visions are executed.

"We're Not In Egypt Anymore, Ramesse"
This coming Labor Day weekend Las Vegas Nightlife will be all about choices. Stepping up to the plate and throwing Vegas a curve ball will be Luxor with a star powered weekend complimented by the grand openings of Noir Bar and LAX. Slick and cutting edge in design, the two venues could hardly be further apart in what they offer to the discriminating nightlife patron. Launched by a grand opening hosted by Brittney Spears on August 31, LAX will aim for a new level of status in the nightclub industry as celebrity investors Christina Aguilera and DJ AM team up with Pure Management Group. “LAX is going to blow people away with its sheer beauty and design,” said Robert Frey, Managing Partner of Pure Management Group. “When guests come to LAX, they are going to be treated to a nightclub experience unlike any other”, he boasted. And like the LAX in Hollywood, this venue will cater to a young, sophisticated crowd and become the destination of choice for well-informed club-goers, A-list celebrities and the social jet set. With unrivaled décor featuring a top-tier sound system perfect for multiple music styles, the 26,000 square-foot, two-story space is sure to be one of the most talked about clubs in the world.  LAX will be outfitted in rich, red leathers and adorned with oversized mirrors and shimmering chandeliers, creating a modern and luxurious feel throughout.  “LAX will have that extra wow factor that other clubs are missing,” said Luxor President & COO Felix Rappaport.  “We are excited for our guests to experience this one-of-a-kind venue.”

ENTERTAINMENT

Stoney’s Rockin’ Country, the honkey tonk and concert venue is now open and serves as an outlet for those wanting to enjoy the south-western cowboy culture which hasn’t previously been available at this level in Las Vegas.  The nightclub’s attributes include weekly live entertainment, nightly mechanical bull riding contests, line dancing lessons on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of every week, three 44 foot mini bowling lanes, four pool tables, two large full service bars and a 2,500 square foot dance floor. Rockie Lynn performs for the club’s first scheduled concert on August 31st.  The club is owned by Stoney Gray, who previously held the position of General Manager of Gilley’s at the New Frontier. Stoney’s Rockin’ Country is located on 9155 Las Vegas Boulevard South and the hours of operation are 5pm to 5am.  For more information, go to www.stoneysrockincountry.com.

“It is official ladies & gentlemen. Sapphire, the world's largest gentlemen's club is coming to New York City,” says Shai Cohen, director of marketing. The Sapphire NYC Grand Opening is set for April 2008 and will showcase the same extravagant style and commitment to over the top entertainment with three levels and a five star steak house and boutique hotel. Sapphire NYC will offer deluxe amenities including designer suites and butlers, concierge services and varying themes to satisfy every indulgence. Managing partner Peter Feinstein states "We look forward to establishing our sister club on the East coast and know it will be very successful. It will enhance the over all image of Sapphire on both a nation wide and global level." More details will be released soon…

Trader Vic’s, the new 11,000 square foot nightlife and dining venue, is preparing for its mid-September opening in the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood. Currently they are looking for fun, energetic people to bring exceptional service with a taste of Polynesia to Las Vegas. The famous national restaurant chain will host a Job Fair at Planet Hollywood Resort Casino Conference Center on Thursday, August 23rd from 5pm to 10pm and Friday, August 24th from noon to 5pm. They are hiring for all positions including: Servers, Cocktail Servers, Security Hosts, Bartenders, Bussers, Dishwashers, Barbacks, Hosts, Cooks, Sous Chefs, Food Runners, Pastry Chefs, and Managers. Full time employees will receive full benefits, dental, 401K, and paid vacation time. Please visit www.tradervicslv.com for more information.

Downtown Entertainment District Comes To Life

The city of Las Vegas will be lighting up the night in celebration of the completing a $5.5 million streetscaping effort for downtown’s new entertainment district, Fremont East. A Fremont East District lighting and dedication party will be held on Friday, Aug. 24. The event kicks off with live music at 7 p.m. and includes a lighting ceremony at 7:45 p.m. These activities are scheduled at Fremont Street, between Las Vegas Boulevard and Seventh Street.

The whole project is made possible through a public-private partnership by the city of Las Vegas and Fremont East property owners. From Las Vegas Boulevard to Eighth Street, three blocks of Fremont Street experienced this transformation. Improvements include the creation of wider sidewalks and more pedestrian-friendly streets; landscaping; lighted gateways and four 40-foot-tall, retro-looking neon signs. Through this streetscaping effort, the city is capitalizing on popular nostalgia by reviving the old glamour of vintage Las Vegas. Streetscaping improvements were begun in late January of this year and took seven months to complete.

Located in the heart of downtown, the Fremont East District sits adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience, which was visited by 18.7 million people last year. The city, along with area property owners, hopes that the improvements and favorable business incentives will bring more entertainment venues to downtown Las Vegas. Incentives for businesses looking to relocate to the area include a reduced Tavern Limited License fee and the Entertainment District Visual Improvement Program, which offers a rebate of up to a maximum of $95,000 for any qualified exterior improvement costs.

Several new venues have recently opened to the public. The Griffin, located at 511 Fremont St. and the Downtown Cocktail Room, located at 111 Las Vegas Blvd., are the newest additions to the already exciting lineup that includes Beauty Bar, Hennessey’s Tavern and Take 1 Nightclub. Also new to the area is a large pint glass housed above Hennessey’s Tavern, at 425 Fremont St. Within the large pint glass is a jazz lounge and live music venue.

For more information on the Fremont East Entertainment District, visit the project Web page.

It’s Not Only Hilarious, It’s Astounding. – One of Las Vegas’ best-kept secrets
Keeping up with the Joneses is never a problem for singer-comedian-impressionist LARRY G. JONES. As the Man of 1002 Voices, Jones chooses to keep up instead with the Nicholsons, the Sinatras, the Eastwoods, and the Dangerfields—impersonating some of the biggest celebrities of the past 60 years.

One of Las Vegas’ best-kept secrets, the Alabama native takes audiences on a trip down memory lane, accompanies by his remarkable two-tone hair and equally impressive vocal range.

The fast-moving show features about 70 impressions – everyone from George Michael, to Johnny Cash, to George W. Bush, to Bill Cosby to Cher gets the Jones treatment. It never seems to matter whether the subject of his impersonation is male or female, high or low voice, all over the tabloids or a one-hit wonder from the ‘70s.  Jones channels all his subjects with sensitivity and a sense of humor.

It’s guaranteed you won’t find some of Jones’ impressions anywhere in town.  Leo Sayer might not have been on the charts for more than 20 years, but Jones recaptures his memorable falsetto. Same goes for the Big Bopper, Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin.

And when he breaks into “I Can’t Get Next to You,” singing all four of the Temptations’ vocal parts, it’s not only hilarious, it’s astounding.    - Jack Houston  -Las Vegas Magazine http://www.lasvegasacts.com/lasvegasmagazine.html  Larry G. Pam and Tommy do it again

For the fourth almost-consecutive weekend, tattooed drummer Tommy Lee and former wife Pamela Anderson have dated up a storm and they were inseparable as their romance rekindled in Vegas.

They flew in together for the four day holiday weekend from Los Angeles on Thursday and while Pamela conjured up her shapely skills appearing in The Beauty of Magic show at the Planet Hollywood resort casino, with comedian David Spade in the audience, Tommy waited patiently upstairs watching Stomp out Loud, the other variety spectacular at the hotel.

Then the torrid twosome met up in their usual late-night love-nest—the Heart Bar on the main casino floor—where they kissed and cuddled over champagne, oblivious to everyone who watched them acting like “like teenagers in love.”

I was told: “The chemistry between the two of them is extraordinarily intense. They are both mesmerized by each other.” The next night Tommy took good pal and Palms hotel owner George Maloof to Pamela’s second show to watch her levitate and chopped in half by Dutch magician Hans Klok.

Star guests for Pam’s first show included magicians Penn Jilette and Johnathan Pendragon along with actor Mehki Phifer. Then, when all her work was done, Tommy took the 40-year-old sex goddess off property for a late nightclub visit to Victor Drai’s spectacular Tryst in the Wynn. On Saturday the kissing hand-holding love-mates were together again before returning to California arm in arm on Sunday.

“They are totally happy and completely contented with each other,” said one of their new Vegas friends. “We’ve never seen Pamela smiling so much and looking so radiant. She’s got the look of love written all over her face.”
