KRAVE THEATRE READIES FOR RE-LAUNCH WITH UNIQUE FUN SHOWS.
One of the most unique theatres in Las Vegas is centrally located at The Strip & Harmon and is known as KRAVE Theatre for now but it will be getting a new name, re-branding and a re-launch next month or so – it’s not only a state-of-the-art theatre but offers an intimate experience since there’s not a bad seat in the house.
Brian Howie of the Theatre Management Group said, “The venue will offer shows all day long thru the late evening. It’s a place for fun entertainment overall. We plan pre-shows, the shows, meet-and-greets during post-show and gift bags. It’s an interactive entertainment experience. We want people to come and have FUN!”
Howie said, “We’re going to begin with a mini-priced 4 p.m. `Happy Hour’ and 5 p.m. show called `Little Legends’ starring Little People as celebrity impersonators. This is a Las Vegas’ first. Mini-Britney hosts this fun show. There’s Mini-Elvis, Mini-Madonna, Mini-Tina Turner, Mini-Vanilli and Mini-Sonny & Cher.” “Little Legends” will open with preview shows at only $25 from Aug. 16-31.
Producer Breck Wall’s show opens at 1 p.m. on Aug. 29. It’s a sequel to `Bottoms Up.’ `Bottoms Up II: Burlesque Strikes Back!’ It’s a new spin on an old style of entertainment.
The 3 p.m. show is called `Doggone Silly’ with J.R. Johns and opens on Oct. 5. A dozen talented dogs will do outrageously funny tricks. J.R.’s dogs are the headliners. It was twice voted the `funniest family show in America.’”
The 7 p.m. show is called “America’s Headliners.” Howie said, “It’s an interactive competitive variety show. The talented emcee/magician Jeff Hobson will host “America’s Headliners.” The most talented headliners will have the opportunity to star in their own show in Las Vegas. We have a headliner every month and four to five competing to be a headliner. This show opens on Sept. 12.”
The 9 p.m. show will be announced in the next few days and will continue the theme of fun and excitement at the venue.
The 11 p.m. show features a limited engagement starring actor-supermodel-author Janice Dickinson in a one-woman show called “What Would Janice Do?”
This is the brainchild of entertainment executive Jocelyne Uy and Hollywood producer Brian Howie. They formed Theatre Management Group (TMG) in 2007. They are based in Las Vegas with offices in Los Angeles and New York. Howie said, “This has been the most under-utilized property in Las Vegas over the past few years.”
It’s location is at the booming Harmon corridor. It’s Las Vegas’ mini-Strip. KRAVE is outside Miracle Mile adjacent to Planet Hollywood near City Center.
To reserve tickets call 702.836.0836. It’s the only theatre with valet parking.
About Casino Gambling: Hitting a Slot Machine Jackpot
By: Bill Burton
Reporting to the IRS
Many players dream of hitting a big jackpot when they play the slots but some are not sure of exactly what happens when they do win. They also have questions about the taxes they must pay on their winnings. Here is a look at what happens when you hit a jackpot on the slot machines.
Hand Paid Jackpots
When you hit the winning combination of symbols for a large jackpot your slot machine will lock up. Depending on the machine any of the following will happen: The lights on top of the machine will come on and start flashing, music will start playing or bells will ring and their might be a message across the screen reading “call attendant.” In most casinos and electronic signal is sent back to a central monitoring room and they are aware that a large jackpot was hit.

According to figures just released by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, nearly 3.3 million people visited Las Vegas in June, a 4 percent increase on last year's figure. The rise is being attributed in part to visitors becoming more accustomed to high gas prices, which may have discouraged some potential travelers last year.

The tension was lifted after police determined that the man wasn't armed with an AK-47.
"There was a strong possibility that the weapon this man was carrying was a toy," said Capt. Curtis Williams of the Metropolitan Police Department's South Central Area Command.

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett
The Fremont Street Experience downtown is now offering more free entertainment options with the addition of the Real Action Stunt Stage. Located at the 1st Street intersection near the Golden Nugget and Binion's, the stage features live action performances nightly including the Russian Bar, cube balancing and a flying silk act. Performances are nightly at 8:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.
The Russian Bar is a gymnastic act that combines the elements of balance, aerial and acrobatic techniques. A thin, flexible bar, suspended between the shoulders of two sturdy holders, is used to propel a flyer high into the air. Executing a series of flips, twists and somersaults, the flyer in perfect balance will land back on the bar.
Cube balancing consists of an artist working with an enormous metal cube to create enthralling visuals. Spinning and propelling the cube around the head, body and the palm of the hand, the artist's dizzying dexterity is not to be believed as the cube itself catches the light and transforms into a shimmering whirlwind of rainbow colors.
A flying silk act is where the aerialist is actually suspended from the 90-foot Viva Vision canopy. Soaring in graceful circles, high above the heads of the crowd, the aerialist and the silk blend together in a series of beautiful twists and turns.
On Aug. 27, Blue Man Group at the Venetian will have new show times and cut down from 11 shows a week to eight in their brand-new, 1,760-seat theatre. Shows will be nightly Sunday through Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets are $110, $85, and $65, call 702-414-9000.
Hacienda Margarita, the Mexican restaurant at the Las Vegas Hilton, is featuring an early happy hour from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. and a late happy hour from 9 pm.-11 p.m., with all appetizers, Mexican beers, tequila and margaritas at half price. Ole!
A "Got Talent Search?" will be held at the V Theater located inside the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood on Aug. 17. The prize is a contract up to $150,000 and a spot in "V" The Ultimate Variety Show. The talent search is for all sorts of talent: singers, dancers, comedian, magicians, acrobats, juggler, specialty acts, etc. Friends and family can watch for free. For information their web site.
The Jerry Lewis local Labor Day Telethon will once again broadcast from the Las Vegas Hilton, Sept. 2 and 3.
The longest-running Broadway musical to play on the Strip, MAMMA MIA!, has added four new, talented principals from film, television and the stage to the cast. The show recently celebrated its fourth anniversary at Mandalay Bay.
Actress Libby Winters, joins MAMMA MIA! in the lead role of Sophie Sheridan, the bride-to-be. With experience in film, television and stage including "The Like Girl," "Champs" and the New York musical White Noise, Winters brings new life to the show.
Directly from the Broadway company of Beauty and the Beast, Rob Sutton joins the cast of MAMMA MIA! as Sam Carmichael, the American architect. Sutton's recent credits include Off-Broadway's The Ark and regional performances in Camelot and Oklahoma! Gracing the stage as Bill Austin, the Australian traveler, Ron McClary comes to Las Vegas from New York City where he starred in Summer '69: The Musical and The Lightning Field. McClary's regional credits include Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest along with television appearances on "Law and Order" and "Ed." Joining Sutton and McClary is T. Scott Cunningham as Harry Bright, the British banker, with experience ranging from Broadway, film, television, and national tours. His credits include Broadway's Love! Valour! Compassion!, Design for Living and Tartuffe as well as television appearances on "Law and Order" and the role of Ryan in the major motion picture "Serendipity."

'Defending the Caveman'
By:Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal
Tired of defending yourself? Fighting with your spouse? Well, maybe you're not, but you probably know someone who is (sure, it's always someone else, isn't it?). You'll be delighted to know there's a contemporary RX for an age-old, stone-age problem. As it turns out, the rifts are rooted back to when we were all cave-people with the idea that "Men are the hunters and women are the gatherers."
Okay, so it's a long-winded way to lead into my review of a recently opened one-man show in Las Vegas, this one playing at the new and greatly improved theater in the Golden Nugget downtown.
"Defending the Caveman," starring Kevin Burke and written by Rob Becker, is an adventure into the relationships of men and women and the differences between them (and there are a few). This is a hilariously insightful show about the ongoing misunderstandings between men and women that will have both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition. Burke is superb at convincing us that we are still instinctually bound to the tendencies dating back to when men clubbed women over the head and dragged them away.
I went with a married couple and most of the audience, judging by their age, were probably married and had been for a few years. Along with much laughter, there was a lot of elbow-poking by both the guys and gals, as if to say, "See, that's why I do that." There also were plenty of shouts from both sexes in the audience supporting Burke's observations.
It's no surprise that "Caveman" has built a following in the therapeutic community and it's often recommended by counselors and therapists. I think it gives men and women a renewed sense of understanding, as well as a chance to laugh at themselves.
For those who may not be familiar with "Defending the Caveman," it is the longest-running solo play in Broadway history, has played in 30 countries and has been translated into 15 different languages.
I'm giving this one two fingers up (and not the middle one) and am adding it to my "must-see" lists when you're in town and for local residents as well, who, I'm told, have been flocking to the Golden Nugget to see it. Word of mouth seems to be working.
Shows are at 8 p.m. (dark Tuesday) with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. Ticket prices start at a very reasonable $34.95. For tickets and information call 866-946-5336. FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE INTRODUCES REAL ACTION STUNT PERFORMANCES.

A flying silk act is the perfect addition to any entertainment extravaganza—but none so more than at the Fremont Street Experience, where the aerialist is actually suspended from the 90-foot Viva Vision canopy. “We want to give our visitors an experience that’s on par with what they expect of Las Vegas,” said Lisa Robinson, director of marketing for Fremont Street Experience. “A night out in Vegas should be dazzling, exciting and one-of-a-kind—and the Real Action Stunt Stage definitely plays a big part in that.”
Real Action Stunt Performances go on nightly at 8:15 pm and 10:15 pm. Riders of the Thunderdome perform Thursday through Saturday at 9:15 pm and 11:15 pm. Live bands perform from the 3rd Street stage seven nights a week, times vary. Nightly shows on the Viva Vision screen appear at 8:30 pm, 9 pm, 10 pm, 11 pm, and 12 am from August 1-18. Beginning August 19, the first show of the evening will be at 8 pm. All shows and performances at the Fremont Street Experience are free and open to the public.

Flamingo Hotel Review By Rick Garman
It seems only appropriate that the retro-cool wave that has been sweeping Las Vegas should finally sweep back around to this place, one of the most famous (and now oldest continually operating) hotels on the Las Vegas Strip: The Flamingo. By embracing its fun and funky past, the hotel is well on its way to reinventing itself for a new generation and, believe it or not, now has the coolest rooms in town. When The Flamingo opened in 1946 it was not, as is often reported, the first hotel on the dusty piece of desert that would eventually become 'The Strip'. The first one was actually The El Rancho, which burned down in the 60's. But although it wasn't first, it certainly was the most heralded - a million-dollar oasis for the rich and powerful built by legendary (reputed) mobster Benjamin (Bugsy) Siegel.
Poor Bugsy wouldn't recognize the place now. The last little bit of the original remaining structure was torn down in 1993 to make way for new construction. These days, The Flamingo is a huge, upscale tropical themed palace - not a mobster or moll in sight. Oh well.
The glittering pink and orange neon façade is one of the most famous in Vegas and the casino area is a faux-tropical wonderland. The gaming area wanders and meanders throughout the property so there are lots of different sections in which to spend your money but the overall feeling is pretty good. This is also one of the few places where you can still find low limits on blackjack tables, although they are becoming more rare here as well. To be honest, this isn't a place that I spend a lot of time gambling in but not for any good reason other than there are places that I like better. They do have a full spectrum of gaming options including slots of all denominations, all the usual table games, a race and sports book, and a poker room.
But it is once you get upstairs that the real magic of The Flamingo begins, with their “GO” rooms. Done with a big nod to the Bugsy Siegel era, the rooms feature decidedly retro décor with big white padded vinyl headboards, white built in desks and chairs that look like they time traveled from the 1940s, and full walls of white drapes (electronic no less) offset by vibrant pinks and deep browns in the wallpaper, carpeting, and accents. Flat panel televisions, CD/DVD players, and high-speed Internet keep it modern so the overall effect is very hip. The bathrooms have also been completely redone with frosted glass walls, a television built into the mirror, and all new fixtures, lighting, and amenities. Staying in one of them will cost you extra (about $50 more per night if the website is any indication) but it’s totally worth it.
Eventually all of the rooms will be converted to this look and feel but that will be a slow process, meaning you have to specifically request one of these rooms if you want it. The older rooms are much more pedestrian although larger than average with comfy furniture and all the standard amenities.
Another truly remarkable part of the hotel is the pool that rivals The Mirage for the nicest in town. Dense tropical foliage frames the area and there are even live tropical animals including penguins and, you guessed it, flamingos. Get it?
There are several restaurants (including a branch of Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville) plus a couple of shows and a health club. If you're really into committing to Vegas you can buy into a time-share.
Prices are reasonable for what you’re getting. Although the standard rooms start as low as $70 a night for summer, mid-week periods $100-150 is more common. Weekends hover around the $200 a night mark and as mentioned the “GO” rooms will cost more.
Although the overall package still places The Flamingo in the second tier of hotel choices for me, those new rooms make a huge difference and move it up several notches in esteem.

Las Vegas Q and A By Rick Garman
Question: Since there’s a story behind everything, I figure there must be an interesting story behind how slot machines started using fruit (cherries, melons, etc.) as symbols. Do you know what it is?
Answer: As a matter of fact I do, Marie, and you can thank the folks at the Clark County Heritage Museum for the information.
The slot machine was invented in the 1890s but in the early 1900s the Bell Fruit Gum Company created a special slot machine that dispensed chewing gum when you lined up the correct symbols on the reels. Those symbols represented the various fruit flavors the gum came in, including watermelon and cherry. The machines, used often at carnivals and fairs, were hugely popular and as future slots were developed the symbols stuck.
The Bell Fruit Gum Company’s influence on the slots goes beyond fruit symbols. Next to those cherries and melons was the company’s logo, shaped like a stick of gum… or perhaps a bar. That’s right, the bar symbols got their start on the same machines.
Keep in mind, slot machines were mostly just a novelty in serious casinos until the 1960s or even 1970s. Early Strip casinos had a few but they were mostly there to entertain the wives of men doing the “serious” gambling at the tables.
Of course today the slot machines take up the bulk of the casino floor and bring in the lion’s share of the revenue. But even now, decades later many are still doing so with those fruit and bar symbols originally created to promote chewing gum. Kind of puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?
Question: What is your favorite thing to do in Vegas that has absolutely nothing to do with Vegas? I’m looking for the kind of thing that will allow us to forget that we are in Sin City for a little while.
Answer: There’s a new on in town that I talked about recently that fits the bill very well. The Springs Preserve is a new cultural oasis located just a few minutes from The Strip that really shouldn’t be missed. You can read more about it here.
But really you don’t need to drive to get a non-Vegas experience in Vegas – just head the Mirage Dolphin Habitat. Step through the back doors of the glimmering gold tower and you might as well be a million miles away when you are visiting the habitat, one of the most successful dolphin sanctuaries in existence.
Now, I know, a lot of you probably wince at the thought of any dolphin being in captivity for human enjoyment and in many ways, you’re right. But the work they do here at the Mirage habitat has been almost universally recognized as important in both the study and breeding of these creatures and has helped to educate millions who have passed by its tanks.
This is not a Sea World type extravaganza – no wacky trainers riding on the backs of dolphins – but you’ll be able to get up close to these magnificent animals at both above ground and water level viewing stations and, if you’re lucky, be nearby when they are feeling frisky.
And if you go now you can catch sight of something very rare – a baby dolphin. The 30-year-old dolphin named Duchess gave birth last week and her baby calf is swimming with her everywhere in one of the habitat’s massive tanks.
The Mirage Dolphin Habitat only costs $15 ($10 for children) and is open every day from 10am until 7pm.

Sounds Of Sinatra By Norm Johnson
You read about them in my column a couple of week's back, when they were at the Bootlegger Bistro. Now you can see and hear them on the big stage at the Suncoast. Of course I'm talking about the "Shades of Sinatra," tribute show, starring Carmine Mandia, Larry Liso, Ryan Baker and the dynamic Lisa Smith. The four will be performing every First Mondays in July, with the first gig being July 9th at 7:30 p.m.
"Shades of Sinatra," has been getting rave reviews from every writer who has stopped by to see them, be it at the Bootlegger or wherever. The show is produced by a talented young lady, who knows how to pick'em, Kelly Clinton. Clinton has carefully moved them along, giving them good places to work out any kinks along the way before taking them to the big rooms of our little village. And, now gang, they are ready! Their first show, by the way, was in the Stirling Club at Turnberry Place in Las Vegas in 2005.
Originally created in early 2005, Kelly assembled the three male singers that were already heavily influenced by and who loved to sing Frank Sinatra songs. The three male leads have been singing for years at restaurants, lounges, and corporate events, with many highlights. When Ms. Smith joined the show in 2006, she was a welcome female element, allowing the guys to have a real live foil to tease - but also one that can sing with the best of them! The "Shades of Sinatra" show you'll see this time at the Suncoast will have added musicians and the sound will be perfect with fabulous lighting. Oh, yeah, not to forget - you'll enjoy some 33 plus songs!

No need to travel the trans-Siberian railway to enjoy ice-cold, top-shelf vodka. Grab your comrades and put on the complimentary lush fur coats and step into the home of Lenin (well, a replica of his head anyway). Along with an impressive caviar selection, you’ll enjoy such perestroika-inspired Russian and internationally influenced favorites such as Siberian Nachos, Seared Foie Gras & Duck Confit, Strozapretti Stroganof and Adzhika-Spiced Pork Tenderloin.

Tropicana Revamps Website Gone (mostly) is the dense blue shadings, clastrophobic postage stamp sized website. The kooky DHTML menu thingy that was just plain annoying is still there and still just as annoying. Overall it looks pretty good - curved edges, subtle shadings, a little cleaner. They're probably just marking time on the current site until the upgrades and construction is finished - or started for that matter. Anyways… check it out.

Tropicana Las Vegas has unveiled a upgraded version of its website. It's more of a major tweak than a true redesign.

Can’t make it to Vegas for the new Cirque du Soleil spectacular, Love? Not a problem. NBC will air a one hour in-depth look at the Beatles-inspired show – hosted by Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell - August 19 at 9:00 PM. Love will also be rebroadcast September 2 and 3 in the regularly scheduled time slots for Access Hollywood.
“I'm very proud of course of the music we made with The Beatles and I am very privileged to have been there from the first track to the last track,” Sir Paul McCartney comments during the special “I can hardly believe it. It's a slightly strange feeling. You know it's like I wake up some mornings and think ‘I was in The Beatles?’ There's only four people that can say that in the world, in the universe and I'm one of them.”
McCartney attended the Las Vegas premiere along with surviving Beatle Ringo Starr, John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, and George Harrison’s widow Olivia on June 30. During its six week run, ‘Love’ has attracted dozens of Hollywood stars to the Mirage theatre once occupied by Siegfried and Roy. On Sunday night, Kim Basinger was spotted in the audience.
