'Las Vegas' will seem like a 'Magnum, P.I.' reunion
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Three central performers in one of the most popular television series of the 1980s will be reunited during the upcoming season of "Las Vegas."

"Magnum, P.I." star Tom Selleck is taking over the lead in the series, replacing James Caan.

His "Magnum" co-stars, Larry Manetti and Roger Mosley, recently finished taping an episode of "Las Vegas," the first time the three actors have performed together since Selleck's show ended its eight-year run in 1988.

"Selleck calls it: The 'Magnum' guys are taking over," said Manetti, who spent a lot of time in Las Vegas from 2002 to 2005 when he was an executive at the Plaza. "It works. It fits like a glove."

NORM: Strip venues start reaching for stars
A Las Vegas version of "Star Wars" has quietly started, with entertainment bookers scrambling for talent to fill a new wave of large venues.

"You're going to see a lot of movement" in the next year, says a longtime entertainment executive. "You're going to see stars people never dreamed of playing Las Vegas 25 weeks a year."

Within four years, six to eight new theaters will be part of an unprecedented building boom that includes MGM Mirage's $7.4 billion CityCenter and Boyd Gaming's $4 billion Echelon, along with replicas of the Plaza Hotel of New York and the Fountainebleau of Miami.

There will be intense competition to get the biggest names signed in advance, the entertainment booker said.

NORM: Siegfried & Roy book on the way.
That long-rumored Siegfried & Roy book is in the final stages.

After being approached for years, they finally gave the project the green light.

An insider said the book is due out early next year.

There have been rumblings for several years that it will be a tell-all book by the German illusionists, who moved to Las Vegas 40 years ago and became the most successful show business duo in the city's history.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Waking Up Downtown
New owners inject life into Old Vegas.

The Strip seems always to get all the publicity and all the "ooohs" and "aaahs" from visitors, which makes it more than a little tough for downtown Las Vegas to compete. But that doesn't mean it's throwing in the towel, at least not without a fight. Sure, Lady Luck is closed down and who knows when the hell it will reopen, if ever, as a hotel-casino. And yeah, Binion's is a shadow of its former glory.

But the Gold Spike has just been sold and the new owners have some interesting plans for the joint and they have a good track record of turning dumps into "happening" places. Then there's the Golden Nugget, whose new owners have spent around $100 million renovating and adding and making sure it keeps its status as the King of Downtown. To tell the truth, I never saw anything wrong with the place, but everything they've done has been an improvement, from the pool to the restaurants and theatre. Class place.

The Fremont Street Experience, despite its critics, still is the biggest draw downtown and now it's adding more free entertainment options with the addition of the Real Action Stunt Stage. Located at the 1st Street intersection near the Golden Nugget and Binion's, the stage features live action performances nightly to include the Russian Bar, cube balancing and a flying silk act. These acts are unique and will garner their share of all those "ooohs" and "aaahs" I talked about earlier.

Just so you get an idea of what you'll see, the Russian Bar is a gymnastic act that combines the elements of balance, aerial and acrobatic techniques. A thin, flexible bar, suspended between the shoulders of two sturdy holders, is used to propel a flyer high into the air. Executing a series of flips, twists and somersaults, the flyer then lands in perfect balance—back on the bar. They asked me to try it, but I asked for a rain check, citing a sprained back.

The cube balancing consists of an artist working with an enormous metal cube to create these incredible visuals. Spinning and propelling the cube around his head, body and the palm of his hand, the artist's dexterity is not to be believed as the cube itself catches the light and transforms into a shimmering whirlwind of rainbow colors. Great stuff.

A flying silk act finds the aerialist suspended from the 90-foot Viva Vision canopy. Soaring in graceful circles, high above the heads of the crowd, the aerialist and the silk blend together in a series of beautiful twists and turns. All of the above are going to be crowd pleasers and will add a lot to the whole downtown experience.

Lisa Robinson, director of marketing for the Fremont Street Experience hit it on the head when she said, "We want to give our visitors an experience that's on par with what they expect of Las Vegas. A night out in Vegas should be dazzling, exciting and one-of-a-kind—and the Real Action Stunt Stage definitely plays a big part in that."

If you want to see these entertainers, they perform nightly at 8:15 and 10:15. Riders of the Thunderdome perform Thursday through Saturday at 9:15 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. Live bands perform from the 3rd Street stage seven nights a week, times vary. Nightly shows on the Viva Vision screen appear at 8:30, 9, 10, 11 and midnight through August 18. Beginning August 19, the first show will be at 8 pm. All shows and performances at the Fremont Street Experience are free and open to the public. If you need to park, there's the Fremont Street Experience parking garage at the corner of Carson and 4th Streets or you can got to any of the downtown casinos.

NORM: Entertainer has some choice words.

Las Vegas comedy magician Amazing Johnathan has re-ignited the Michael Richards n-word furor, saying the "black people should have been thrown out" because anyone who disrupts "my job" is the n-word.

The Sahara headliner used the word six times in a local interview after he cited the Richards incident to make the point that "everybody's really uptight, and it's really hurting comedy."

He told local freelance journalist Steve Friess of TheStripPodcast.com that condemnation of Richards was "the perfect example" of political correctness gone too far.

Had the situation been reversed and "there was a black guy on stage," there would have been no repercussions, the entertainer said.

"If they were heckling him during the show, they were wrong," he added. "If you're heckling a comic and interrupting a show, you're a (n-word) at that point."

He said he's never used the word on stage, but he acknowledged that he uses it "around the people I hang with. They're educated and they know it's just a word and it's a funny word, y'know."

He said he's used the c-word on women he's thrown out of his shows "and gotten away with it because they were." There is, he said, "a right way to do it."

His comments are sure to be a hot topic at the national convention of the National Association of Black Journalists, which opened Wednesday at Bally's and runs through Sunday.

Suspect in shooting at casino surrenders.
By FRANCIS McCABE LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The man authorities had been seeking in the weekend shooting that wounded two people at Caesars Palace surrendered to police Wednesday.

Richard Earl Shepherd, 34, was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on three counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery with a deadly weapon, and one count each of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon. He was being held without bail.

The shooting happened just after 4 a.m. Saturday when a group of four men got into a fight with another group including two men and two women near the elevators that lead to the garage for self parking.

According to the arrest report, the fight started when one man made comments about Shepherd's sister. Shepherd told him that type of talk was disrespectful, according to the report.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: New venue pursuing ambitious agenda.

Brace yourself for Mini-Britney, dancing dogs and life lessons from Janice Dickinson in a place that won't be called Krave nightclub.

New partners have signed an operating agreement for the troubled club at the corner of Harmon Avenue and the Strip, which is attached to the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort.

Los Angeles-based producer Brian Howie and Jocelyne Uy are primary partners in the Theatre Management Group, which will operate the building and oversee everything but late-night club programming.

"The naming rights are pretty much for bid," Howie says. "It won't be Krave." The name that branded a gay-friendly nightclub will "go from being the venue to being the party once or twice a week."

CHIPS GALORE
Collectors of Las Vegas past gather for convention.
By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

It's tough to put a price on memories.

It gets easier when memories come in the form of clay chips stamped in $5, $25 and $100 denominations.

The history of Nevada — and casino culture in general — is tumbling through the fingers of collectors for whom colorfully dated gambling chips are currency to recover memories of everything from family vacations in Reno to mobster sightings in old Las Vegas.

The chips are also lucrative collectibles that can fetch thousands of dollars for the person lucky enough to have bought one directly from a casino or undervalued at a garage sale.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION

Tony Danza, who joins Mel Brooks' "The Producers" on Monday, made sure he made an early impression on Brooks.

Danza was performing his song-and-dance solo act at the Desert Inn in the 1980's when he spotted Brooks and his wife, actress Anne Bancroft, in the audience.

With a rare opportunity to strut his stuff in front of the iconic producer, Danza pulled out all stops and ran long.

When Brooks and Bancroft went backstage, Danza said, Brooks told him: "I have never seen a man do so much, so well and for so long."

SHOW REVIEW: "Keep It Funny starring Tim Gabrielson" and "Dirty: Rock Hard Comedy Hypnosis"

Tricks of Trade: House of Blues at Mandalay Bay proves to be good venue for pair of shows.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Never discount the benefits of elevated surroundings.

The House of Blues at Mandalay Bay has been a proficient, topflight concert hall since the day it opened in 1999. But only this summer did the club allow outside producers to jump into the fray of ongoing Vegas-style shows.

Afternoon magician Tim Gabrielson and the late-night hypnotist team of Michael Johns and Terry Stokes both get a lift from the club's general aesthetics.

Only four years ago, hypnotist Stokes had a Chihuahua for a partner in the seedy lounge of the now-demolished Bourbon Street. His music came from an assistant visibly cueing up a boombox.

Top 25 Greatest Vegas Songs Ever
Source of article:http://www.vegaspopular.com/2007/08/06/top-25-vegas-songs/

The criteria for judging a city's value should include the number of songs written about it. Sure, real estate, job market and schools are important metrics of a city's worth, but a city without a song is a city I don't want to live in. If a city can't inspire enough passion in someone to write a song about it (good or bad), then what is the quality of life like in that city?

Vegas has hundreds of songs written about it. It seems everybody has a Vegas tale to tell. There are tales of lament and tales of triumph, but when the jukebox stops, one thing is clear: Vegas is in the eye of the beholder.

Here are the top 25 songs ever written about or inspired by Vegas:

25. Sheryl Crow - 'Leaving Las Vegas' - This song should be higher, but when she went on late night TV and said the song was autobiographical (she didn't write it), it kind of just loses some appeal.

24. Stereophonics - 'Vegas Two Times' - If you like sloppy Welsh spelling bees, this is your jam.

23. Jimmy Ray - 'Goin' to Vegas' - Part genius, part fool, Jimmy Ray of 'Are You Jimmy Ray?' fame infuses a lot of excitement in this anticipatory song about a Vegas vacation.

22. Chumbawamba - 'Jesus in Vegas' - Yes the 'Tubthumping' kids wrote more than just that one song. This one isn't as catchy and seems angry more along the lines of their punk beginnings. according to the song, "Andrew Lloyd Weber is doing the lights."

21. Charlie Clouser - 'Let It Ride' - This is the theme song to NBC's 'Las Vegas' as shown in the UK. It has a Vegas sounding name and since Elvis already has two other songs on the list., this beat out "Little Less Conversation' — the theme for the US broadcasts of 'Las Vegas.' Had there been a song called, 'Nikki Cox Rocks,' that probably would have made the list over these two.

20. Buck Owens - 'Big in Vegas' - Country legend sings about his aspirations to have his name in lights when he "turns 'em on in Vegas."

19. Hootie & the Blowfish - 'Las Vegas Nights' - It's only fitting that H&TBF has a song about Vegas since the band has the Shady Grove Lounge in Vegas at the Silverton.

18. Who Da Funk - 'Shiny Disco Balls' - This is a great dance song and had it been more about Vegas (or at least had more than three lines), it would have easily been at the top.

17. Geggy Tah - '''Las Vegas With the Lights Out' - This ditty is from the same album that had their big radio/TV commercial song 'Whoever You Are.'
16. Southern Culture on the Skids - '40 Miles to Vegas' - Another of the anticipatory songs about the actual journey to Vegas.

15. Gram Parsons - 'Ooh Las Vegas' - Also covered by the Cowboy Junkies and Emmylou Harris, this is a pretty song about the consequences of Sin City.

14. Nico - 'Vegas' - You either love Nico's voice or hate it and with this instrumentation, the same can be said about this song. I love it.

13. Barenaked Ladies - 'Conventioneers' - Alcohol and off-site work functions? Inhibitions don't stand a chance. This song proves what happens in Vegas, does not necessarily stay in Vegas.

12. The Thrills - 'Your Love Is Like Las Vegas' - I've been saying Vegas is getting too expensive. When an Irish rocker equates lost love to a "city that burnt me good," because he can only afford one weekend, I think I may be on to something. Either that, or he was dating an arsonist or a call girl.

11. Frankie Yankovic - 'Vegas Polka' - If accordions don't turn you're on, maybe you're just dead on the inside.

10. Clubstrophobia - 'Vegas' - Dance song with a fun Vegas video - worth the look.

9. Gomez - 'Las Vegas Dealer' - Nice English rock band making a nice English rock song about lost love that's not entirely clear if Lauren Lee's departure is due to her running off to deal blackjack or if there was a nasty incident with a Las Vegas drug dealer.

8. The B-52s - 'Queen of Las Vegas' - The schtick never grows old. This "Momma, rockin' on the roulette wheel" song is from 1983 and can hold it's own with any beehive-inspired new wave songs of today.

7. Size 14 - 'People Get Really Drunk in Las Vegas' - Their big hit was 'Claire Dane's Poster' but this song has a truthness to it that deserves a Top 10 induction on this list. Nothing like alcohol and no cutoff time to drown the sorrows of a busted romance.

6. Tori Amos - 'Don't Make Me Come to Vegas' - Kind of a different take on the Vegas songs. The beautiful read-headed piano chick is threatening to come to Vegas and yank someone out of bed. Nice.

5. Elvis Presley - 'Viva Las Vegas' - I put this in the top five because I had to otherwise my inbox would fill up with hate mail. Since I didn't put it number one, I think there are some anti-Fletch e-mails in my future, but the heart wants what the heart wants. I have to admit, before living in Vegas, this song was the first song I played to get pumped up for a trip to "bright light city" and I shouldn't rag on it too much because people like the Dead Kennedys and Johnny Ramone have covered it, but I guess it's a case of saturation for me and the fact that there's another song on the "Viva Las Vegas" music soundtrack that is better than this one. Yes, I said it.

4. Tom Waits - 'Straight to the Top (Vegas)' - This is a nice pseudo-swinging affair from "gravel throat."

3. Cocteau Twins - 'Heaven or Las Vegas' - Man, most of the time I don't know what she's singing or even what language she is singing it in, but this song (the whole album really) is transcendent.

2. Elvis Presley - 'Night Life' - Taken from the same soundtrack as "Viva Las Vegas," this song wins because of a universal truth that the album's namesake song doesn't have. Both songs do a great job of capturing the moment. 'Viva Las Vegas' is hyperactive just like the action on a casino floor and 'Night Life' slinks around with sex appeal. It all comes down to one lyric. If you adopt it as a mantra, your time in Vegas, and life, could be more successful: "You can't be a quitter when you're caught up in the glitter of the night life."

1. Dean Martin - Medley 'Drink to Me Only' - 'The Rat Pack Live at the Sands' captured probably the greatest live performances in the history of live performances. Even if you don't like this kind of music or have never heard of Dean Martin (or Maybe Frank or Maybe Sammy), this medley captures the essence of old-school Vegas which is the Vegas our collective consciousness longs for. Interestingly enough, none of the songs cobbled together were Vegas songs. Dean Martin added Vegas bits here and there. 'I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine' gets a non-Disney twist. 'I Love Paris' becomes 'I Love Vegas' and is the rocking part of the medley.

Spectacular Success.
Las Vegas version of Phantom celebrates one-year milestone.
By Robert Wiley-Brown/Las Vegas Magazine

In a town where the only sure thing is that there isn’t a sure thing, it only makes sense that the longevity of a show based on a theatrical hit raised an eyebrow by those in the know in Las Vegas. After all, critically acclaimed smash hit Tony winners Hairspray and Avenue Q weren’t able to sustain a lengthy run in what has been called the Entertainment Capital of the World. This is why it came as no surprise that even a show with legs and a proven track record like The Phantom of the Opera, which continues to rave reviews and packed houses even to this day in London, New York City, Budapest, and Osaka, Japan, made some wonder just how long the chandelier could come crashing down. It is with great joy that we are thrilled to announce that, thanks to a little tinkering from the maestro of the London’s West End, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and the original New York production’s director and Broadway legend Hal Prince, the Vegas version of the musical theater classic, Phantom—The Las Vegas Spectacular, this month celebrates its one-year anniversary at The Venetian on the Strip. The tragic tale of love, music and out-of-this-world special effects has paid off in a grand scale.

To mark this milestone, fans can now purchase a brand new package, which includes one Golden Circle ticket, an elite backstage tour and a meet-and-greet with a Phantom cast member. The Phantom VIP Experience is sure to sweep you off your feet and take you to the hidden caverns that make up this extravaganza.

Phantom is also opening up the $40 million 1,800- seat Paris Opera House-style Phantom Theatre for touring, Tuesdays through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This in itself is a sight to behold, not to mention that you also get a chance to view the famous $5 million chandelier. This free attraction is a way to say thank you to the public.

The story of Phantom, for those who have been living in the catacombs of Paris, is based on the 1909 French novel by Gaston Leroux entitled Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, which has been successfully made into countless theatrical, television, and motion picture pieces over the years. The most famous film adaptation came out in 1925 and starred the master of the makeup brush, Lon Chaney. But it was Webber who immortalized the gothic concept about an eccentric, physically deformed musical genius who terrorizes the Paris Opera House and takes the beautiful innocent Christine Daaé under his wing, pretending to be the “Angel of Music.” He coaches the trusting girl until she is ready to become the new soprano star of Paris.

With wild threats of bringing down the prosperity of the Opera House itself, the Phantom is able to bring Christine to the attention of critics and all of Paris, allowing her talents to shine. Unbeknownst to the masked man, the new fame also opens her up to find love in someone other than himself. In Webber’s project, it is these feelings that produce what some have called one of the most beautiful works of love songs ever written.

Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, which opened in London’s West End in 1986, has been seen worldwide by more than 80 million people and claimed a worldwide box-office gross of more than $3.2 billion, making it the highest-grossing entertainment event of all time.

Most of the cast members from the original Las Vegas production are still in the show, with the notable exception of Sierra Boggess, who begins previews on Broadway in November as Ariel in Disney’s new theatrical production of The Little Mermaid. Elizabeth Loyacano continues in the part of Christine with newly added cast member Kristi Holden taking on the same leading lady role for alternate performances. Brent Barrett and Anthony Crivello continue to alternate as the Phantom.

Echelon Breaks Ground By Rick Garman

The official ground breaking of the new Echelon Place resort occurred last week, bringing with it some more details, a first look, and a higher price tag. Originally expected to cost in the neighborhood of just over $4 billion, the project is now expected to run more like $4.8 billion. Eh, what’s a couple hundred million dollars between friends?

The project will cover more than 80 acres on the land once occupied by The Stardust and the Westward Ho. It will include:

Hotel Echelon – the centerpiece hotel with a 140,000 square foot casino and 2,300 rooms and suites
Suites at Echelon – a separate 650 all-suite tower
Shangri-La – the high-end Asian hotelier will open their largest hotel ever with 353 rooms
Mondrian – One of two swank names from Morgan’s Hotel Group (the same folks who run the Hard Rock) with 860 rooms
Delano – The other Morgan’s hotel with 550 rooms
More than 300,000 square-feet of retail space
The aforementioned 140,000 square-foot casino
More than 30 restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and lounges
Two theaters; one with 4,000 seats and another with 1,500 seats

The whole thing is expected to open in 2010. You can get more info and see more art at the resort's official website.

El Cortez Hotel Review By Rick Garman

The common wisdom in Las Vegas seems to be that the only way to make an older hotel competitive in today’s market is to blow it up and start over. Witness the demise of The Stardust, The Sands, The Desert Inn, The Dunes, and soon, The Frontier. To be fair, the people who own these buildings are often justified in creating something new because in the end there is only so much you can do to an existing building – only so many times you can slap a fresh coat of paint on it and hope that it will make a difference. But a tour of the historic El Cortez in Downtown Las Vegas proves that you don’t have to bring in a wrecking crew to turn a has-been hotel into one worthy of notice. The El is back and she is in many ways better than she ever has been before.

The fabled history of the El Cortez dates all the way back to 1941 when it was built by JK Houssels with 59 rooms and a small casino. Houssels sold it in 1946 to none other than Bugsy Siegel. It went through a series of owners landing eventually with one of the most famous names in the casino industry, Jackie Gaughan who owns the place today and actually lives in the penthouse atop the hotel tower. Gaughan can regularly be seen in the casino or the restaurants, chatting amiably with customers who are on a first name basis with him.

While the hotel was never a “first rate” property, it had been a solid performer in the Downtown arena until the neighborhood around it declined. The crowded, somewhat dingy, and smoky casino mainly lured an older, locals audience and the rooms were little more than basic accommodations.

It’s amazing what throwing a few million dollars at a building and its surroundings can accomplish.

First there is the neighborhood. The couple of blocks between the relative safety of The Fremont Street Experience and the El Cortez was not a safe one, especially at night. But the city is in the midst of dumping tons of money at the blocks between Las Vegas Boulevard and 8th Street, attempting to turn the depressing row of pawn shops with unsavory characters hanging around outside into a hip nightclub row. The sidewalks have been widened, landscaping is being added, classic signs from the Neon Museum are being installed, and several fun and funky bars have opened up along the stretch.

The El is getting in on the action by turning a parking lot stretching from Las Vegas Boulevard to their front door into a pedestrian plaza. That will deliver people to the new porte cochere, done with flagstone and ironwork details that give the place a much more swank first impression.

Inside the entire casino and most of the public areas have also been redone. They have removed nearly half of the slot machines they had and reorganized the floor to improve sightlines and personal space. New carpeting, wall treatments, gaming tables and chairs, and woodwork combine to turn faded into fashionable. The front desk and lobby bar have been completely redone and more new stuff is on the way including a revised lounge, a new casino bar, updated machines, and much more. It’s almost impossible to believe that it’s the same place.

The renovations carried over to the guest rooms where new furnishings, flat panel televisions, high-speed Internet service, and additional niceties like mini-fridges in some rooms turn boring boxes into well equipped accommodations. To be sure, no one will ever confuse this place for Bellagio – rooms are small, bathrooms very small, and the décor won’t get them a feature in any interior design magazines - but the before and after difference is night and day. These rooms are as good as any other in the Downtown area. In addition to the casino there are several restaurants including a fine steakhouse, Roberta’s, a very popular coffee shop, an even more popular Chinese buffet, and some fast food type outlets. There is no pool or other recreation option, but if that’s important to you, you probably shouldn’t be considering Downtown anyway since only the Golden Nugget has a pool area worth spending any time at.

The service at the El Cortez is another big draw. Many of the employees have been with the property for years. They consider the hotel home and the people who visit their family and you will sense the difference between this and the brusque professionalism of The Strip immediately.

Soak all that in and then throw in the affordability factor. You can get one of their “Vintage” rooms – the very small but perfectly fine rooms that date back to 1941 – for as low as $25 during the week. Come on! The larger and newer tower rooms go for as low as $40 and usually in the $80 range on the weekends. For those kind of rates you are lucky to get a pillow and a blanket.

If I haven’t stressed it enough, it needs to be said again: the new El Cortez is not comparable in any way shape or form to the multi-billion palaces on The Strip. But it isn’t trying to be. Instead it offers solid accommodations in a friendly package for rates that will allow you to spend your money on more important things. Like gambling.

Show Review: The Producers By Rick Garman

What a long strange journey this particular tale has had. Originally a 1968 Mel Brooks movie, it was reinvented earlier this decade as a rip-roaring Broadway musical that went on to earn more Tony Awards than any other in history. In 2005, the musical version was turned back into a movie with the people who originated the roles on the Great White Way, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. In between it has had touring productions that have criss-crossed the country and recently the Broadway version closed after five successful years. Now in an extended run at Paris Las Vegas, this shortened version of the show is competing for your attention in a crowded marketplace of flashier, more original productions and the question is whether or not this offers anything fresh on a story that has been told a lot in the last few years.

That story, for those of you who haven’t seen any of its incarnations, is about two theater producers who team up to scam little old ladies out of their money by putting on the worst show in Broadway history. The show? “Springtime for Hitler” of course; a zany romp through the Third Reich written by a crazed Nazi with swastika wearing pigeons. To ensure its failure, and their financial gain, they conspire to hire the worst actors, the worst director, and the worst of just about everything else, which results in a cast of over-the-top characters and the inevitably wacky situations.

The musical, based on its own merits in a vacuum, is deliriously funny, madcap and loud and irreverently caustic like much of Mel Brooks’ finest works. The music is true to Broadway form and earned all of those trophies it won. The actors in the Vegas version are all vets of the New York theater scene and their performances here are pitch perfect, although sometimes it’s difficult to tell if the characters are just that much like Lane and Broderick or if the actors doing them now are. In other words, “The Producers” is a musical classic – one you should see once in your life.

But here’s the deal: once is enough. I saw the Los Angeles version of this show and when I saw the movie version I felt like I was watching a carbon-copy, no matter how nice it was to see Lane and Broderick in the roles that they so clearly defined. Seeing the Vegas version after that was officially too many for me and actually made me focus more on the story’s flaws than its merits. For instance, it hadn’t really occurred to me until this time how despicable most of the characters are. Previously, I had been so wrapped up in the manic energy of the whole thing to care, but this time the mean-spiritedness of it came through. Perhaps that was because I saw it almost back-to-back with the imminently good-natured “Monty Python’s Spamalot” but regardless, repeat viewings of this particular show do not seem to add anything.

The loss of David Hasselhoff in a dress in one role and the addition of Tony Danza in another non-dress role really don’t change my mind on the whole situation.

So if you have never seen “The Producers” in any of its incarnations, this is an absolute gem of a production that provides you with an opportunity to catch a classic. But if you have seen it before then save your time and money. There are worse ways to spend 90 minutes and $150 in Las Vegas but there are better ways as well.

In oldest battle, the men cave.
Show at Golden Nugget attempts to explain why women like to shop and men watch lots of TV
By Jerry Fink, Las Vegas Sun

It figures that women better appreciate the humor in "Defending the Caveman." It fits perfectly with playwright Rob Becker's premise that the chasm between men and women dates to the caveman.

Becker says men are hunters and focus on their prey to the exclusion of everything else around them, making them unaware of their shortcomings - ignoring their wives, poor housekeeping, underwear dropped on the floor.

Women are gatherers and, over thousands of years of evolution, have become tuned in to everything in the world around them. When you're a gatherer , you have to be superalert so you won't miss anything that is worth gathering.

The next big thing.
Echelon's show rooms follow pattern set by Caesars Palace and MGM Grand.
By Jerry Fink, Las Vegas Sun

Forget about being the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas seems to be aiming to become the Entertainment Capital of the Universe.

Caesars Palace raised the bar with the $100 million, 4,000-seat Colosseum, home of Celine Dion and Elton John. That bar was cleared by the MGM Grand and Cirque du Soleil's $130 million Ka Theatre, which is almost a show in itself.

Expect the same kind of energy from two giant projects.

The $7.4 billion CityCenter by MGM Mirage will have a 2,000-seat theater with plans for a Cirque tribute to Elvis, in the vein of the Beatles tribute "Love" at the Mirage.

Boyd Gaming broke ground last week on the $4 billion Echelon Las Vegas on the razed Stardust site. It will include two theaters - one with 4,000 seats and one with 1,500.

SYLVER RETURNS

Hypnotist and infomercial hawker Marshall Sylver is returning to a stage on the Strip.

Look for a mid-July opening at Harrah's showroom for the controversial entertainer who was sued by The Venetian for bouncing a $201,000 check and accused by the state of Nevada of bilking self-help seminar attendees.

The Nevada attorney general's office investigated Sylver on suspicion of theft, racketeering and violating the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

After a four-year legal battle, all charges were dismissed in late 2005 by District Court Judge Valerie Vega, and the attorney general's office withdrew all charges in their case of taking money under false pretenses.

TRAMMEL LEAVES 'JAIL'

Prop comic Joe Trammel kept his word: He completed his 23 days in a fake jail on an open stage at the Fremont Street Experience.

Other than three hours off to perform his nightly gig at the V Theatre (Planet Hollywood Resort) and bathroom breaks at Fitzgerald's, Trammel did his time behind pink-colored bars, while wearing a Paris-esque wig, big sunglasses and black-and-white striped prison garb.

His ordeal ended at midnight Monday.

"I met a lot of interesting people," said Trammel, hoarse from exhaustion and talking so much. He briefly met with some show business friends who showed up to support him, then collapsed in a room at Fitzgerald's about the time Hilton was leaving her cell in Los Angeles.

"I'm a little punchy right now," said Trammel, 40, who lost 15 pounds. The hardest part, he said, was trying to sleep with all the partying going on. Former boxing champ Leon Spinks, who shocked Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight title in 1978 in Las Vegas, showed up in the wee hours, "just roaming around. He said he lives here now."

It turned out to be more than a spoof and a public relations stunt, said Trammel. "It was a reality check. I really learned to appreciate life."

Drunken driving awareness has been a personal cause since he narrowly avoided a head-on crash on 215 in 2002 that killed three, including a newlywed who was eight months pregnant. Trammel stopped to help, called 911 and pried open doors to assist the victims.

Slot reviews By Gayle Mitchell

1) Cherry Bomb: Wms. 92-93%. 4 spins. This slot is set up to bounce between a bonus tile game and top screen play. Set up similar to a keno game wherein the player matches tiles while the more correct selections will bring on higher payouts.

To assist your credit total and matches is a spark symbol that allows extra spots by tossing out cherry bombs for possible winning combinations.

The bonus round is activated by 3 or more slot machine symbols at which time you are awarded 5 free spins.

Freddy, Leena and Adam are the 3 wild cherry bomb people on the third reel. A spin with these 3 wilds allows a cherry bomb to bounce from the top screen to the Picks Remaining area on the bottom screen. Wins containing Freddy bomb=1 additional pick, Leena=2 more picks while Adam=3 more picks.

This game is sure to put a ‘bounce’ of excitement in your slot play.

2) Brazilian Beauty: Wms Gaming. 87-96%.3-6 spins. There’s a la-la-latin theme going on here accompanied by maracas, conga drums and multiplying wild symbols.

The bonus round has two parts, a free spin and re-spin. When three or four Sun God symbols are scattered on the reels, the Sun Gods are held while the remaining reels re-spin. Afterwards, the total of Sun God symbols determines the number of free spins. Therefore, 3, 4 or 5 Sun Gods allow 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively. Should one or more Brazilian Beauty symbol appear, bonus credits are awarded while 20 of these ‘Beauty’ symbols collected will grant the player 30X the original bet.

As with most bonus rounds with these two ‘spin’ features, additional free spins are often won while you are in the ‘spin’ moment.

3) Top Gun: Wms. 88-92%. 2-3 spins. This slot places you in the cockpit of a fighter jet treating you to the most innovative sensory immersion gaming experience ever.

Top Gun is a multi site progressive penny or nickel slot boasting a top jackpot resetting at $500,000.

While playing, the base game, a random event known as the Fly by Bonus is triggered when a group of jets fly across the screen. Hold onto your seat as it thunders accompanied by a shaking screen. Each time a jet flies by, a wild symbol is revealed to increase the jackpot. Additionally, 3 or more Top Gun bonus symbols start the main Top Gun Bonus.

The thundering chair, the Bose sound and graphics merge to create the experience of the cockpit of an F14.

This experience begins as you take off from an aircraft carrier, enter the danger zone and as the enemy approaches make the decision to avoid, climb, barrel roll, hard left or hard right. That decision will determine your credit award to include a 2-3X multiplier.

During this sequence if Engage Enemy Target appears, you are set against a squadron of enemy jets. Select one of four options to fire a missile and if you hit an enemy target, your pilot rank increases along with another missile shot. This particular bonus event ends if you receive the message ‘Return to Base’.

Should you demolish 5 enemy planes, you are now indeed, the Top Gun.

The Bonus Extender symbol allows you to ignore the ‘Return to Base’ and continue receiving increased bonus points.

There is no doubt that the Top Gun experience is ‘Top of the Line’.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
August 2007

August of 2007, marks the seventh year of this entertainment newsletter.  Each month, I’ve tried to bring readers up to date with the ever-changing face of Las Vegas entertainment—shows that are opening, changing, or closing; as well as the major headliners that will be visiting our town.  With both the news and reviews, I’ve simply tried to let people know what to expect when they came to town or want to go to a show.  I am proud to have been able to bring you the news of what is happening in Las Vegas entertainment, and I look forward to the years to come.  So next time, bake a cake…

August days in Las Vegas are certainly the dog days of summer—instead of a hot and dry 115 degrees, it’s 105 with enough humidity to make it uncomfortable.  Monsoonal showers are always a threat at this time of year, and thunderstorms could pop up anywhere, anytime.  According to all of the weather records, July is the hottest month in Las Vegas…but for some reason, August always seems hotter.  There are still a lot of pool parties and summer concerts going on.  There are a couple of new shows on the horizon, and the convention season is just starting with a couple of big conventions coming to town.

The first convention of note will be Creation Entertainment's Official STAR TREK Convention at the fabulous Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, home of STAR TREK: THE EXPERIENCE, the $50 million dollar attraction that literally is Star Trek live! The 2007 edition of the convention continues in the enduring spirit of offering our attendees the absolute best time ever, a full four days of non-stop entertainment honoring Gene Roddenberry's legacy of a positive future for mankind. With an amazing array of celebrities, events, parties, food functions, autographing, photo ops, vendors, auctions, contests, live music, comedy and surprises: you are invited to leave the "real" world behind and join the fun. As the crown jewel of Creation's 36 year history of fan conventions, this event is "the one" to be at. And unlike all other "huge" fan conventions Creation Entertainment never sells a ticket that does not include a seat in the main theatre. You won't miss a guest or event or spend your time waiting on lines to get into a theatre! Make your plans to join the celebration from August 9th - 12th.

MAGIC is the convention that really kicks off the season.  This monster show comes to town at the end of the month and well over 100,000 people are being expected to attend.  The men’s garment convention is always a popular and well-attended event.  From its humble beginnings, it is now a huge convention that is in town, twice a year.

The singularly named performer, Harmik, has long been internationally recognized and praised as the #1 Tom Jones impersonator, look and sound alike in the world. He has established himself as a staple at corporate events, private functions, and full stage solo concert performances.  The one thing that he has not been able to facilitate, though, has been a regular gig as a headliner in Las Vegas, that is all about to change.  Having just started at the end of July, and hopefully running for the next ten years or so, Harmik will be performing his headlining show inside the new Canyon Club at the Four Queens.  His show runs Sunday through Wednesday and features a live band and the promise of a great time.

"Oo La La" is now playing inside the Anthony Cools theatre at the Paris Las Vegas.  It is a unique show that features a multi-talented cast of women.  Not only do the women dance, but also handle the singing, comedy, and magic.  There are even a couple of aerial acts that are tossed in for good measure.  This is an early evening topless revue that doesn’t really have any competition on the Strip.  It is a fun show and worth checking out.

Tony Danza is starting his run in The Producers at the Paris Las Vegas.  He is going to be playing the role of Max Balystock—the producer that wants to create a flop.  Producers of "The Producers" hope that his name recognition will help boost sales.

Aga-Boom closed early at the Steve Wyrick theatre.  Slow ticket sales were its doom.  It is a shame…it was certainly a worthy show, but it had no money for marketing and was never able to get the word out.

Ronn Lucas has moved his ventriloquist show from the Wyrick theatre to the Luxor.

And Dixie Dooley has gotten the Westin to reopen its showroom with his magic production.

Life in the Fast Lane
By:Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal

They're sleek, sexy, very expensive and perform the way most men fantasize about. No, I'm not talking about a high-class Las Vegas hooker, but two of the world's most desired automobiles–Ferrari and Maserati.

Tucked just off the casino floor, almost adjacent to the Wynn Las Vegas poker room, sits the highly-polished, marble-floor showroom of the Penske-Wynn Ferrari-Maserati dealership, featuring this dynamic duo in all their shining splendor. A sight to behold as you are greeted by a pleasant receptionist who also takes your admittance fee of $15 which, of course, goes toward your purchase of a vehicle.

The showroom is not that large, with only some half a dozen cars on display, but each one of them drawing "oohs" and "aahs" from appreciative onlookers. There is something about a low-to-the-ground, sleek automobile with an engine under its hood that you know can easily reach speeds in excess of 200 mile per hour to get your heart racing just a bit faster. You can almost picture yourself behind the wheel, wearing your ascot and Fendi sunglasses as you roar across the desert floor, daring anyone to even come close.

To own one, of course, you must first have a lot of money, and secondly, be lucky enough to find one. In the case of Ferrari, the company's allocation to the U.S. is around 1,200 yearly. Included in that number are the challenge cars they use for racing purposes, so there aren't many left that end up in the hands of dealers. "They tell us what we're going to get and though it's never enough, we're happy with what we get," says Jon Wiggins, area vice president for United Auto Group, the second largest publicly traded automobile retailer in United States.

Here at Penske-Wynn, Wiggins says most of the cars are pre-owned. "The new cars, in terms of Ferrari," he says, "are on a waiting list going on 10 years. When we came here there was no exception to the rule. You couldn't just come in and pick one off the floor.

Maserati is a little different. It has only one model right now, soon to become two by end of year, and we just started receiving shipments of the new automatic transmission model, which has been very well received."

One advantage of the dealership is its authorized full-service shop, located one floor below the casino floor showroom, where there is also a second showroom with some 20 cars on display. Okay, now to the nitty-gritty — price. According to Wiggins, "a typical pre-owned Ferrari here is going to be a late model 360 or 430, so you're looking at a starting price of $175,000 to $185,000 and peaking out at the mid-$300,000 range." He mentions that they recently sold a used Enzo for $1.4 million and a pre-owned 599 model for more than $500,000.

New Ferraris will start off at around $200,000 for a manual transmission coupe and move up to $240,000 for the 430 Spyder. From there it's behind the wheel of a 612 model which runs around $280,000 and then the 599 which will set you back between $300,000 to $340,000. That includes options, like tires (just kidding). On the other hand, the Maserati, which offers only one model, ranges from $110,000 to $135,000.

Although the price of a Ferrari seems on the high side, to say the least, Wiggins points out the value of owning one. "What makes the Ferrari so special is that they have done an excellent job combining style, performance and limited availability. I think the Ferrari's motto is to produce one less car than the market demands. And they have done a great job of that over the past 10 years, which has kept the value of the vehicle up and makes it desirable for buyers. They're collector's items by the time they hit the floor, so it's an excellent investment.

And who's buying these expensive machines? "We see a lot of couples shopping, but we also see a lot of females buying both the Ferrari and Maserati products. It's certainly not gender-specific. Money comes in a lot of packages these days," says Wiggins, "so you see everything from very young people in their 20s to buyers in their 70s. There's not a pattern and they're hard to identify. So we try to be nice to everybody and see what happens. You never know who just hit a jackpot in the casino."

Whether there were a lot of winners, or just people with money who appreciate the finer things in life, the dealership sold more than 200 cars last year. Most were Maseratis, but only because of availability, says Wiggins. "I don't think price has anything to do with it. I think we could sell as many Ferraris, within reason, as they could allocate to us. I know if Ferrari would double up on our allocation, we could certainly sell them all. We're blessed to be here. It's a great location, great franchise and they're great partners."

As an added attraction, when you visit, go downstairs to the larger showroom where a Ferrari is set up in the corner for visitors to have their photo taken sitting in the car by a professional photographer. You can then have whatever background you want–in front of the Wynn Las Vegas resort, or beside the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign for example–as a souvenir to take home with you. Of course, driving one home would be a much more fun reminder of your trip to Las Vegas.
