DEVELOPMENT: Downtown dream
Critics scoff at developer's ambitious plans to revive Gold Spike.

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL.

Gregg Covin has visited the Gold Spike.

Yes, he still plans to buy it.

The Miami developer of high-rise condos and historic boutique hotels visited downtown Las Vegas last week for a closer look at the Gold Spike, a small hotel-casino that's known for its smoky atmosphere and dirt-cheap prices.

Covin, 38, has a purchase agreement to buy the Spike for $15.6 million from Tamares Las Vegas Properties. His plan is to revive the property, seedy even by downtown Las Vegas standards, as a boutique-style hotel with room rates in the neighborhood of $125 to $150 per night.

NORM: Britney may face trouble in scuffle.

Britney Spears could face legal issues in connection with the paparazzi altercation at Wynn Las Vegas.

There are rumblings that Spears directed her bodyguard to go after the photographer, who suffered minor injuries during the fracas Thursday near the spa at Wynn.

If it can be proved that Spears conspired or was involved in the "vicarious liability" for the action of her bodyguard, she can be charged.

The Trippies Are Coming, The Trippies Are Coming!

It's hard to believe that almost a year has passed since we opened up the nomination process for the 2006 Trippies - VegasTripping's Best (and worst) of Las Vegas awards. Last year the voting was fast and furious with a bunch of new categories honoring the restaurants, hotels, casinos and shows we love as well as honoring many talented folks who do something "Vegas" on the internets.

In the last year numerous hotels have closed for implosion, most have upgraded their offerings and some have faded from grace to mediocrity. Again we're handing the keys over to you… the readers of VegasTripping to nominate your favorite, hotels, shows, restaurants, casinos, blogs, websites, podcasts and more for inclusion in the final voting of the 2007 Trippies. Based on a lot of feedback we've gotten from you we've reshuffled the categories a little and will post them in late August, but that doesn't mean you've got a month to slack! You can still fire up your thinking caps and think about who you would like to see nominated for this years Trippies.

Take a gander at last years winners and compare that to what you've experienced during your Vegas trips so far this year and get your nominee list ready.

Nominations will begin September 1st 2007 and run until October 15th. Final voting will begin on October 31st and run until December 15th… the winners will be announced in early January 2008.

Risk is paying off for "Defending the Caveman." The Golden Nugget's long-form comic monologue — a new genre for Las Vegas — is doing enough business in the 600-seat theater to expand to seven days per week starting Aug. 7. That means nine performances per week instead of eight for the one-man show starring the tireless Kevin Burke.

Great damning-with-faint praise comment from Gregg Covin, the 38-year-old developer who has purchased the Gold Spike downtown and plans to turn it into a boutique hotel. Of the Gold Spike building, which is as aesthetically challenged as any hotel on or near Fremont Street, Covin says, “To me it seems good. I’m used to working on buildings built in 1920.”

Las Vegas Advisors Top Ten Las Vegas Values: August 2007

1. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 Hours - $4.9
The best dining bargain in Las Vegas is the 10-ounce filet-cut steak dinner at Ellis Island, the casino at the Super 8 Motel on Koval near E. Flamingo. It’s served with salad, vegetable, potato, garlic bread, and rolls for $4.95, 24 hours a day. But it’s not on the menu; you have to ask specifically for it.

2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-2 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.

3. Prime Rib Dinner - California - 5-11 pm daily - $6.99
The $6.99 prime rib special at the California downtown starts with a full salad bar, continues with a big cooked-to-order piece of prime beef, plus potato and veggie, and finishes up with a little cherries jubilee for dessert. The same meal would cost at least triple in any other city in the country.

4. Beer - Casino Royale - Daily - $1
We’ve replaced the $1.25 beers at Slots A Fun with $1 Michelobs at the center-Strip Casino Royale. This is a 24/7 deal and the bar staff is ultra pleasant about doling ’em out (it’s not uncommon to encounter a staff that’s resentful of this type of deal). You can also get two flavors of frozen margaritas for a buck apiece. Bottom line, though: Beers for $1 are better than beers for $1.25.

5. The Comedy Stop - Tropicana - Daily - $19.95
The Comedy Stop at the Tropicana stays in the Top Ten, based on a recent visit that proved it an even better value than we thought.

6. Sign-Up Promotion - Arizona Charlie's Boulder - Daily - $100 Rebate
And we’re replacing the players club sign-up bonus at Stratosphere with the sign-up bonus at Arizona Charlie’s. The Stratosphere deal (escalating freebies for play, including $100 in bounce-back cash) is still good, but the Charlie’s deal is better. New members who lose between $5 and $100 on their first day of play can swipe their card at the players club kiosk when done playing, and the kiosk prints out a ticket that states the loss amount. Take the ticket to the players club booth, where the club card is loaded with the amount of the loss. Now you have to play through that once on a machine of choice and whatever’s left can be cashed out. This last step is new and takes away the element of complete risklessness (you can lose a little on the play-through of the giveback), but it’s still pretty close to a $100 free-shot, with a very high upside. Another way to think about it (if you’re happy enough just to increase your play time) is that you get to take a second shot with your losses. Either way, it’s strong. Just remember to stop playing and get your rebate after you’ve lost the first hundred.

7. Buffet - Planet Hollywood - Daily - $13.99-$24.99
The Spice Market Buffet is back where it belongs (after a stint in a ballroom during the changeover from Aladdin to Planet Hollywood), so we’ve also put it back where it was in the Top Ten. Though we only tried the weekend brunch, we were impressed enough to replace the Mirage. The prices are still below most other gourmet spreads (Bellagio, Wynn, Paris), so for now, it’s our prime buffet pick.

8. Steak Dinner - Gold Coast - 24 Hours - $10.95
After revisiting the venerable complete steak dinner at the Gold Coast for our "Classics" round-up, we decided that this 24-hour 16-ounce T-bone, which comes with five sides and a glass of beer, is just too good not to be included (we usually don't list two steak dinners in the Top Ten). Though it's gone up in price over the years (it started a decade or so ago at $5.99), the rest of Las Vegas's prices have since passed it, so it's now a Top Tenner again.

9. Steak & Eggs - Arizona Charlie's Decatur - 24 Hours - $2.99
Like the steak special at the Gold Coast, the classic round-the-clock steak-and-eggs special served 24/7 at both Arizona Charlie’s has been available for more than 10 years, but the price has been raised only once, from $2.49 to $2.99. A revisit this month confirms the Top Ten worthiness of this great classic. Note that the coffee shop at Decatur is extremely popular with locals, so there’s often a line to get in. Check the counter, which often has a seat or two. And while you’re there, take a $100 slot or video poker free-shot on the house.

10. Hot Dog - Suncoast - 11 am-5 pm - 75¢
The 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at Suncoast replaces the 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at South Point. They’re the same price. They’re available the same hours. And they come with the same kraut and onions at no extra charge. So why Suncoast and not South Point? Because following another time-honored Top Ten tradition, ties go to the coupon. What that means is that Suncoast participates in the LVA coupon program while South Point doesn’t. So by going to Suncoast you get the added benefit of being able to play your $5 matchplay from the POV while there. It’s a good and fair tie-breaker that also serves to support those who support us.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL'S KA

By Judy Thorburn
From"www.vegas4locals.com

On July 12th my husband and I attended a business networking reception followed by a performance of Cirque Du Soleil's KA at the MGM. A big thanks goes out to Tom Wilkinson of Vegas4locals.com and Cirque du Soleil's resident show staff for making it all happen.

This was the first time I had seen KA in its entirety after getting a taste of the production at the press conference before its Grand Opening a few years ago. To say it is in a class by itself is without question. To begin with the multi million dollar theatre that was specially built for this production is an eye boggling industrial looking structural design that looks like it could be home of one of Star Trek's alien empires, but actually works to envelope the audience and first draw you in to the fantasy adventure that awaits.

The staging is another aspect that blew me away. Most of the action takes place on or above a mechanical stage that is suspended over a giant pit and able to move and rotate in every direction, as well as transform into a vertical monolith. I could easily say that the stage acts as a character onto itself due to the fact that it plays a big part in the story in which Imperial twins are separated by war and must endure a perilous journey that entails surviving an ocean storm, meeting fantastic sea creatures, and battling their foes until they eventually are reunited. Implementing a combination of floor and aerial acrobatics and martial arts moves, the performers in exquisitely colorful, innovative costumes are accompanied by remarkable special effects and an Asian inspired music soundtrack (enhanced by speakers situated on the back headrest of every seat) that takes audiences on a spectacular, magical journey like nothing I have ever experienced before.

I have yet to see all of Cirque du Soleil's productions, but this one is a breathtaking show, with so many stunning aspects, that I recommend it as a "must see" for audiences of all ages to enjoy.

Don't miss seeing 'O' at the Bellagio
By:Thom Wise/Las Vegas Magazine

There are some things in life you can justifiably miss, and then there are others you just shouldn’t. You can forego bungee jumping, and still live a long, productive life. You can skip eating frog legs, and never look back.

But you shouldn’t miss seeing “O” at Bellagio.

The first time I saw the water spectacle-of-a-show was in October 1998. No one had heard of such a thing: a show on, or just above, the water. (“O” being a play on the French word, eau, for water.) And to be sure, no one could imagine spending more than $100 million to mount and produce the first show.

The shock went from “Oh, my” to “Oh, yeah!” within the first minutes of the show. And the waves of approval have never ceased.

In a city of superlatives, “O” dominates the scene, retaining its deserved moniker as “the toughest ticket in town,” along with “the one you should try to see.

Perhaps it has to do with our basic human need for water—yet no one could ever have imagined that we need it visually, as well as literally.

Beyond the genius of the staging and the magnitude of the theater, there’s just as much emphasis put on the talent and athleticism of the performers. Many of them are of Olympic caliber, and none disappoint. Some are very up close and personal so don’t be surprised if you become part of the act.

The majority, however, proves its talent by filling the gargantuan stage with a life force that needs to be experienced first-hand, and quite possibly more than once.

They rock, they roll, they swing and fly, on horses and on swings. They even appear to be walking on water … and who’s to say they’re not?

It concludes with a high-dive, which causes my palms to sweat just thinking about it. And believe it or not, I haven’t given any of the drama or the suspense away. You’re still in for a treat.

As with most Cirque du Soleil productions, all of the staging is accompanied by live musicians, which is due to necessity as much as ambience. If a performer needs a moment or two longer to complete his or her act, the musicians can cover the interlude, and the audience is none the wiser.

Oh Lordy, did I forget anything? Trust me, there’s so much more to see and experience with “O”

Idolizing the icons
By:Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Magazine

A tribute—far different than a cover and beyond an impersonator. A tribute—through talent and musical expertise—is an homage to a performer and his/her expertise. Imitation has long been the sincerest form of flattery, and few shows are more flattering to the musical geniuses of our time than Legends in Concert.

The production company that handles Legends is On Stage Entertainment, and its hub has always been in Las Vegas. For the past 20 years, their 20,000-square-foot facility has been used to recruit, refine and polish artists to go and perform throughout the country. With this huge well of talent, few shows are ever the same, allowing acts to rotate and fans to experience something different with each trip.

This summer, the lineup includes The Killer (albeit a much younger version) Jerry Lee Lewis adding some good ol’ rock ’n’ roll, and the addition of blond bombshell Gwen Stefani injects a contemporary feel.

Ricky Martin is going to be living la vida loca, and Whitney Houston’s look-alike doesn’t just mimic the demeanor of the diva but hits the high notes just like the pop queen does.

The Blues Brothers have always hidden behind the shades and hats to conceal their full identity, and with the Legends duo so close to the real thing, it makes you wonder if it is really them.

One of the few things that never changes in the show is the closing number: Bringing down the house, show after show, is a tribute to Elvis Presley that rivals some of the most established impersonators in the world. Elvis also hangs around after the show for personalized photos, and if you’re lucky, you might even get a scarf.

And just because these are all tribute acts doesn’t mean the show lacks originality. All of the artists perform live, and the music is created by a live band. The choreography is all done in-house, as well as the costumes.

Legends in Concert is a half-dozen shows rolled into one, with six decades of genius in one night.

The Copy Machine
Impersonators master the art of the double take.
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

Elvis left the building for good in 1977, but if the rumors are true, there’s an excellent chance he’s lurking among the multitudes of celebrity impersonators in Las Vegas. The city has taken great pride in re-creating the gondolas of Venice and the New York skyline, so why not the faces, voices and mannerisms of Hollywood’s finest?

How it took 16 years for a celebrity impersonator awards show to arrive here is anybody’s guess, but on May 27, Imperial Palace hosts The Reel Awards, honoring the world’s top impersonators and look-alikes. This year marks the first time the awards have been held outside of Los Angeles, so in honor of the move, here’s a look at some of our finest tribute shows.

An Evening at La Cage
For more than 20 years, Frank Marino has been performing as Joan Rivers in the only female impersonation show on the Las Vegas Strip. Now a local icon, Marino fronts a reliable cast of famous females performed by males, including Judy Garland, Dolly Parton, Britney Spears and Celine Dion. But the campy fun begins and ends with Marino, whose costume changes and banter between acts are strong enough for a man, but made for a woman. And, yes, there’s even a Michael Jackson impersonator. Riviera, (702) 794-9433

Legends in Concert
Like death and taxes, and much more appealing than either, Legends in Concert has been a reliable staple at the Imperial Palace since 1983. Now in its third decade, Legends stays fresh by rotating its cast of celebrity impersonators. You can always count on Matt Lewis as an on-the-money Elvis Presley to revive the King and lead the ensemble in “Viva Las Vegas,” but it’s the current portrayals of Ricky Martin, Janet Jackson, Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston and the Blues Brothers that keep audiences coming back. Imperial Palace, (702) 794-3261

American Superstars
American Superstars shoots for the stars—not a bad idea considering it’s located in the tallest building west of the Mississippi. The celebrity impersonator show has been a fixture at the giant needle for more than 10 years and it’s easy to see why. Superstars keeps it current, offering in-the-news celebs Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Tim McGraw, as well as the classics, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. The result is a show that appeals to all ages—an American institution as venerable as apple pie and baseball. Stratosphere, (702) 380-7711

The Musical History of the King starring Trent Carlini
As The Dream King, Trent Carlini takes audiences on a journey through the high points of Elvis’ career, including his breakthrough in the ’50s, his tenure in the U.S. Army, the campy movie years, his climactic NBC comeback special and finally, and fittingly, to the King’s Vegas residency. Authentic costumes and the voice—oh my, the voice—will have you seeing double. Which, in fact, you are. Sahara, (702) 737-2515

The Rat Pack is Back
In the 1960s, the Sands was the place where Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Joey Bishop gathered to sing, carouse and joke around. In the 21st century, the Greek Isles re-creates the zeitgeist of that hotel and its marquee act with a show that showcases each of the performers’ strengths. From time to time, Marilyn Monroe has been known to join in on the fun. You might find one or two impersonations of these entertainers elsewhere in town, but only Greek Isles has all four of them in the same place. Greek Isles, (702) 737-5540

America’s Tribute to Neil Diamond starring Jay White
Neil Diamond impersonator Jay White got his start in Legends in Concert before moving to the Riviera. Now Diamond fans come out in droves for an intimate evening with the uncanny entertainer. White switches from one colored, sequined shirt to another, approximating Diamond’s hits “Sweet Caroline,” “Cracklin’ Rosie” and “America” to a tee. A hot five-piece band and video clips from Diamond’s heyday make White’s show a definitive tribute. Guaranteed you’ll have at least one song stuck in your head afterward. Riviera, (702) 794-9433

Barbra & Frank: The Concert That Never Was
Ol’ Blue Eyes may have passed, but his spirit lives on in Vegas. And though it may seem odd, one of his most effective tributes is with an unlikely partner, Barbra Streisand. Although they never appeared together onstage, Sinatra and Streisand often crossed paths in their illustrious careers. Sebastian Anzaldo and Sharon Owens create a vision of what it might’ve been like to see the pair in concert, with both taking solo turns before returning to duet on “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and “New York, New York.” Riviera, (702) 794-9433

Fab Four Mania
Some Beatles tributes like to mainly highlight elaborate costumes and fancy wigs, but Fab Four Mania strives for the complete experience. Oh, there are elaborate costumes and wigs, but these likenesses of John, Paul, George and Ringo play the classic hits of The Beatles in the same keys, with the same instruments and without backing tracks. They also span several periods of the bands career, from the heady days of Beatlemania through the psychedelia of Sgt. Pepper to the final days before the breakup. The Bronzed Medal
The best prize to bring home from Vegas.
By Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Sun

We have pool parties, pool clubs and pool lounges, but whatever happened to just going and relaxing at the pool without all the fuss? Sure, the exclusive water boxes are nice, and perfect for some, but not everyone wants to pay a cover to lay out, and not everyone wants a DJ blasting while relaxing in the rays.

If you do desire a little privacy while out playing in our massive fun puddles, cabanas are all the rage but you pay to play there as well. Regardless, our pools are magnificent just as they are, so here is a look at a few of the picturesque places to soak up the sun.

Mandalay Bay
With the largest wave pool in the city, a long, sandy beach and a lazy river, Mandalay Bay ranks more as a small water park than a hotel pool. Adding even more to one of the prodigious pool complexes is a $30 million dollar Beach expansion.

Just a splash away from the waves and opening in early June is a new three-story beachfront tower. There are sliding glass doors on the first level so sun junkies have the option of embracing the heat or not, and also The Beach Bar & Grill where the food and service is still top-notch even if no shirt or shoes stipulations apply (sit-down service available).

Up on the second floor, The Beach Casino is hands down some of the most unusual poolside gaming, with blackjack, roulette and craps players overlooking the entire lagoon while still enjoying a climate-controlled setting. The third floor is the toasting point, with Villas Soleil, the villas that are sure to change how we look at poolside shade. There is only room for five villas on the top floor, as each ranges from about 250-500 square feet. In addition to having access to the private rooftop pool, each has its own 50-inch flat-screen television, MP3 player and changing area and, most importantly, when there are poolside concerts—a private deck overlooking the Beach (although tickets must be purchased separately).

In other areas around the popular Beach, Mandalay is meeting the demand with supply, so there is no more scrounging for sand space. For the current pool season, 1,000 additional beachside and poolside chairs and lounges have been added, along with the new Beach daybeds that fit up to six beachcombers at once. (702) 632-7777

Golden Nugget
The Golden Nugget has rejected the “tear down something old and build something new” mentality that Vegas is so accustomed to. Instead the classic downtown hotel has spent loads of cash to restore the landmark, $30 million of which went to the brand new pool (and it shows), which opened for its first full season this spring.

The focal keystone is undoubtedly The Tank, a 200,000-gallon aquarium that is pierced by a three-story waterslide with a clear casing so you slide right by the live sharks swimming within. Not the deep sea adventuring type? Try lounging out in one of the cabanas either on the second or third levels with great views of the entire complex. Or, if you are the typical Vegas vacationer, make your way over to the Dive Bar—a cocktail area surrounding the pool with plush seating.

Bellagio
Five different pools, two of which are for lap swimming, and four whirlpools make up this gorgeous Italian waterscape. Two of the pools are set off by Italian fountains right in the center, and several others are adorned with custom floor tiling. Tall white pillars are wound with sprawling vines encapsulating the getaway, enlightening savvy sun-seeking travelers that the fountains out front are not the only water attractions on property. The cabanas are carved into the hotel as opposed to free-standing, turning into a secret refuge while also making cooling it during the hot summer months much easier. (702) 693-7111

The Venetian
The rooftop pool is immaculate in every way. Classy tile designs wind you through the foyer to surprise you all at once with the massive open pool area. Three Italian- a provides gourmet eats poolside, with a wide array of signature hors d’oeuvres, pizzas and sandwiches. Two different spas are right in reach, and two bubbling Jacuzzis are always available. (702) 414-1000

Caesars Palace
It’s been said that Gaius Maecenas of Rome built the first heated swimming pool in the first century B.C., so it would seem only appropriate that one of the most extravagant heated pools is at the massive Roman playpen, Caesars Palace.

The 4.5-acre Garden of the Gods Pool Oasis revives the respect the Romans had of water and translates it into a hedonistic den of H2O. The Temple Pool is the main focus of the complex, boasting 270,260 gallons of flowing water. The Neptune and Apollo pools are geared toward the mature palace-goers, as this is where most of the cabanas are located. (702) 731-7110

Living his dream and illusions.
Hans Klok, a longtime fan of Vegas, promises an edgy and glamorous show.
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

The question isn't whether internationally renowned magician Hans Klok can compete in a city already brim full of illusionists, including Lance Burton, David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and (next year) Criss Angel.

The question is: Who's better looking - Klok or his assistant, Pamela Anderson?

Anderson assists Klok in his production "The Beauty of Magic," which has preview performances this week and opens to the public next Thursday.

She replaces Carmen Electra, who initially signed to be his celebrity assistant but bowed out without explanation.

Quick-Reviews: Restaurants By Rick Garman

While I’m working feverishly to finish the next edition of my Moon Handbooks Las Vegas, I am running behind on putting up full new reviews on Vegas4Visitors.com. In the meantime I’m pitching out a series of mini-reviews so I can tell you about some cool stuff without having to wait until my cranky editors let me out of the stockade they’ve built for me and let me return to the wonderful world of the web. This week, some quick reviews on restaurants I have recently visited:

Flavors Buffet at Harrah’s
As buffets move as relentlessly upscale as their hotel hosts they often become a little too snobby for their own good - I don’t care how much foie gras you put on the plates, it’s still a buffet, people! But Flavors does a good job of elevating the concept without becoming inaccessible. Their regional stations all have festive names (Ole for the Mexican, Fresh for the seafood, etc.) and their carving station is one of the most complete I’ve seen with roast beef, chicken, ham, turkey, sausage, lamb, roasted vegetables, and more. And unlike many buffets, their dessert station satisfies. Chocolate fountain. That’s all I’m saying.

Café Ba Ba Reeba
In case you’re not familiar with the concept of tapas, it’s a Spanish term for what basically amounts to appetizers. Only here instead of being a pre-meal treat, they are the meal as you delve through a huge selection of options including paella, cold and warm seafood, beef and lamb, chicken and pork, and more cooked with a Spanish flair and served in small portions. Order a bunch and share at the table to turn your meal into a communal feast or get a couple just for yourself so you can eat a more sensibly sized lunch or dinner. Don’t miss the mini-desserts - perfect and cheap cappers to a terrific dining experience. Located at the Fashion Show Mall, www.cafebabareeba.com.

Stack at The Mirage
Done by the same people who do Fix at Bellagio, this restaurant shares more than just a corporate structure. The design is similar, with what appears to be an undulating cocoon of wood set off by dramatic high-ceilings and lighting plus a simple, one-page American diner menu with fun twists. Appetizers include mini chili-cheese dogs or pigs in a blanket and a small selection of steaks and seafood is the main pickings here, but everything is done with care and delightfully presented. The atmosphere can be raucous with the bar in front full of noisy party-goers and the nightclub worthy sound-system making quite dinner conversation impossible, but the energy and cuisine more than make up for it.

Sweet Water Prime Seafood
Along with the nearby Bonefish Grill, this area is becoming an unlikely hot spot for fine seafood dining. Sweet Water is unique in a lot of ways, from their warmly upscale design to the fun chef’s tables with views of cooking facilities to the fish market up front in case you want to put a grouper in your suitcase for the trip home. The seafood selections are vast with salads, chowders, and create your own shellfish feasts noteworthy and many of the dishes have a vaguely Asian or French spin on things but it’s often the tried and true that win the day here - the pan seared swordfish steak served with a choice of accompanying sauces was perfect. A few steaks and chicken dishes satisfy the non-seafood eaters and everyone will love the cheesy garlic bread appetizer. 9460 S. Eastern Ave., 702-588-5400, open daily 11am to midnight, www.sweetwaterprimeseafood.com.

Roberta’s at El Cortez
Eating at Roberta’s is like slipping on a comfortable dinner jacket. The antithesis of the trendy, expensive, and loud restaurants on The Strip, this place is a traditional steakhouse in a room that still manages to be casually lovely without turning into cliché. The menu will not surprise you - steaks, seafood, lamb chops, and a few other dishes plus salads and soups - but the presentation, portion, and especially the prices will satisfy all but the most picky of food snobs. The atmosphere is charmingly friendly and familial - our server was celebrating her sixteenth anniversary as an employee at the hotel!

M&M Soul Food
In 2006 I took an extended road trip through the American south and experienced some of the best down-home cooking anywhere, so I know of which I speak when I proclaim this to be the best example of the cuisine you’re going to find in Vegas and pretty worthy even when compared to what you’ll find in Mississippi. Try the smothered fried chicken, three pieces of juicy, slightly spicy meat covered in delicious gravy or go traditional with the hot links, collared greens, gumbo, catfish, or short ribs. Their home-brewed barbecue sauce is revelatory and will make you wish they bottled it for you to take home with you. Sheltered suburban types may be slightly intimidated by the neighborhood but get over yourself and go experience southern cooking at its best. 3923 W. Charleston Ave., 702-453-7685, open daily 7am to 8pm, www.mmsoulfoodcafe.com.

Palms Buffet
The only disappointment on my recent gastronomical fiesta was the new Palms Buffet. The old one was delightful, with an interesting assortment of regional foods including Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes that you really couldn’t find anywhere else. The new buffet is smaller, the food selection is limited to the same old stuff you can get anywhere, and none of it was all that terrific. And they are even charging higher prices for this than they used to. There are many better buffets so you can skip this one.

Lenny's Las Vegas.
NEVER TOO LATE TO WIN

I close with this to show you that, yes, you can win in Las Vegas, despite your 1,000 consecutive losses visiting our fair city. A former waitress who moved to Las Vegas in 1946 from Brisbane, Australia, won a $10,762,067 Megabucks jackpot at the Fremont downtown. "I love playing slot machines, especially Megabucks," said the anonymous 82-year-old woman. "I remember playing Megabucks when it first came out here back in 1987. So I feel I was owed this jackpot and I'm really happy that I never stopped playing."

She had originally come to the casino to pick up a promotional four-pack coffee drink that was being given to VIP customers. The woman said her last big jackpot was $12,500 at the Stardust 20 years ago. "I feel I'm blessed," she said. "Earlier in the afternoon, I was at another casino and won $400 on a keno machine. But the Fremont is my favorite and I came over here to get my gift.

"I had already played about $600 (so much for leaving anything for her kids, if she has any) on this one machine when I started talking to it and told the machine that I was getting very frustrated (don'cha just love these people who talk to the machines). I took out another $100 and on the very next pull, it hit. I saw the Megabucks symbols fall into place and thought I won $10,000." The woman said her winnings will go to her church and family, and then she is going to take a vacation. "I'm the youngest of 11 children and I have one remaining brother and two sisters still living in Brisbane," she said. "I haven't been there in 20 years and I'm going as soon as I can." No mention of a contribution to the Lenny's Early Retirement Fund.

LENNY'S LAS VEGAS: Pyramid Schemes
Luxor undergoing changes for more hip look.

I don't know, it seems every time I turn around either a new megaresort is rising on the Strip, an old hotel-casino is being torn down or drastic changes are being made to existing properties. Just look at the past year. Two of our landmark casinos — the Stardust and Frontier (excuse me, New Frontier) — are gone, to be replaced by multi-billion-dollar resorts with new names, none of them reflecting Las Vegas.

Then we had the Aladdin, which in the end proved it couldn't distance itself from what seemed like a curse over the years, and finally was sold and renamed Planet Hollywood. Treasure Island decided the name wasn't hip enough, so changed it to TI, though almost everyone still calls it Treasure Island.

And now, we're told the people (MGM Mirage to be exact), who own the Luxor, don't like the Egyptian theme. So here's what's going on and what will be happening at the property over the next little while, at a cost, I might add, of $300 million, almost as much as the $375 million it took to build the joint.

Much of the ancient Egyptian theme will be removed while adding trendy lounges, restaurants and an ultra-hip nightclub. The focus will be on transforming Luxor's atrium level from the family-friendly arcade to more adult-themed amenities, such as additional restaurants, lounges and entertainment venues.

The 2,500 hotel rooms in the Luxor pyramid will be remodeled. Many of the older amenities, such as Nefertiti's Bar and the Isis and Sacred Sea restaurants, are already history and the Egyptian hieroglyphics on the casino's indoor walls and other symbols are slowly being eliminated.

The first amenity, the Aurora Lounge near the hotel lobby, opened in the spring to replace Nefertiti's. Other venues, such as the LAX Nightclub, will open Labor Day. The club, an off-shoot of the trendy Los Angeles nightspot of the same name, will have celebrity investors, including singer Christina Aguilera. Two other bars and lounges will open later in the fall adjacent to LAX: Noir and Flight.

A bar called Liquidity (cute, huh?) located in the center of the casino, will open in the fall, as will CatHouse, a restaurant and European-style lounge, located in the upstairs area above the casino replacing Isis and Sacred Sea. Celebrity chef Kerry Simon, who operates Simon Kitchen and Bar at the Hard Rock, will serve as executive chef.

There are more changes coming, but I'm running out of space. Be assured the Luxor, except for its pyramid shape, will have a completely different look and feel. Thank God that focus groups voted against changing the Luxor's name or turning the pyramid into some huge phallic symbol. David Schwartz, director of UNLV's Center for Gaming Research, said "It's the way the city is going. It's much less about these cartoonish-themed properties and more about attracting a younger, hip audience." That may be so, David, but cartoons have been around a lot longer than any nightclub I know.

SHOW REVIEW: "Gerry McCambridge — The Mentalist"

Going Mental: Gerry McCambridge's act sends audience members home talking.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGASREVIEW-JOURNAL

Gerry McCambridge, aka "The Mentalist," has an interactive show full of audience input that makes this job of writing about it just a little easier.

"It's Aunt Debbie. I'm at that show. It's really cool, I'm not kidding."

Aunt Debbie's nephew was the first person contacted after McCambridge started a cell phone race to solicit help from someone not already in the audience.

His show at the Hooters Hotel is indeed cool for offering new twists on traditional stage magic. As McCambridge explains at the beginning of the show, a magician makes you ask, "How did he do those tricks?" The mentalism act inspires you to ask, "Were those tricks?"

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett

Pure Management's NOIR BAR will open at the Luxor over Labor Day weekend. It will be the first Las Vegas nightclub to offer privacy, subtlety and sheer elegance along with access to additional amenities like Pure's new 2,000 club capacity LAX nightclub next door that can be entered through a hidden private entrance, fine dining at PMG's new company American Bistro, or relaxing in a private luxe environment for a very select 200. NOIR is Vegas' first discreet lounge to feature its own 'outside' entrance negating having to enter the casino.

NOIR will have a highly selective guest list of VIPs, movers and shakers in addition to celebrities. What happens at NOIR will definitely stay at NOIR. NOIR won't be flashy, but it will be a comfortable private lounge with a French flavor and an upscale modern-day speakeasy with tasteful chandeliers, black crocodile chairs, hand-picked tables and crimson covered walls.

TOP 10 CASINO TIPS – August 2007 By Henry Tamburin

1. One of the best blackjack games if you are a low stakes blackjack card counter is at the Santa Fe Station Casino (North Las Vegas), where they have 2-deck games with about 75% cards dealt our before the shuffle.

2. You can get loads of Las Vegas coupons prior to leaving for a trip by going to www.billhere.com. While there, you should also sign up for the free subscription to the Viva Las Vegas e-newsletter.

3. If you are in Vegas and want to play UBT elimination blackjack Sit 'n' Go's, head over to the Venetian Casino on Friday evening from 8pm till 2 am. Buy-ins are $100 and $250; only 21 hands are played.

4. The Silverton Casino in Las Vegas has implemented a slew of high paying (known as full pay) video poker machines including deuces wild, double bonus, jacks-or-better and more. They have also revamped their buffet, and their steak house is very good.

5. Don’t ever bet the Big 6 and 8 in craps. It’s a sucker bet. You can make a place bet on the 6 and 8 and get much better payoff odds.

6. Two mistakes most novice players make at blackjack is to always make the insurance bet and double down for less. Don’t do either and you’ll win more in the long run.

7. If you are heading to Vegas and want to play roulette, click here to find the casinos that offer the more favorable single 0 roulette wheel.

8. If you like to play the slots, always use a Player’s Card when you play (free to get), always play at casinos that have historically payed more back to players (see slot payback tables in Casino Player magazine and Strictly Slots magazine), always play one coin in a machine where the payoffs for winning combinations are proportional to the number of coins played and if you like to play video slots, it’s best to activate each line with at least one coin.

You can find out what the Vegas casinos are giving away when you sign up for a slot club card by going to this site http://www.advantageplayer.com/lasvegas/index.html.

10. If you want to snag limited 2/1 Las Vegas show tickets, check out this site: http://www.tix4tonight.com. You'll have to purchase your tickets the day of the show (first come, first serve), and there is a service charge (but you can print a $2 off coupon on their web site).
