LAS VEGAS PIONEER: Frontier's days end.
Hotel property grew from 1942 opening on now famous Strip.

By ARNOLD M. KNIGHTLY/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Amid tears and hugs, the New Frontier closed its doors for good at 12:01 a.m. today.

"I hate to say bye but I must say bye," said Helen Madison, a casino porter for 34 years, with tears in her eyes.

The hotel estimated that 3,000 people were on the property at 11 p.m. Sunday, an hour before it was to close.

Approximately 1,000 continued to mingle at 12:01 a.m. today, when an alarm sounded signaling the end of the Frontier.

Earlier, longtime employees and customers, mixed with curious onlookers, shared the final minutes as another old Strip property shut its doors to make way for another multibillion-dollar development.

David Bowie..A Las vegas Headliner?

Is superstar rocker and artist-actor David Bowie close to signing a multi-million-dollar deal to become a long-term Las Vegas Strip headliner? I’m hearing solid rumblings that the giant AEG theatrical organization who run the Colosseum at Caesars Palace have had “really positive serious and productive” talks with the 60-year-old master musician about being added to the stellar lineup of Bette Midler and Cher after Celine Dion ends her four-year run there this coming December.

It is all supposed to be “top-secret’ and I’ve no doubt that the rumors will be scoffed at and denied. But my information comes from the highest possible sources so we’re going with the story!

A "Friendly" New Website.

A good friend of mine, Dave Tuley who actually gave me my first writing job for GAMING TODAY has started his own informative website.

Here is the lowdown:

Dave Tuley, who has covered the Las Vegas sports betting beat since 1998 and had a long run with Daily Racing Form since 2000 (and continues to write a freelance article for DRF) has started his own website called viewfromvegas.com on July 4.

The site includes his reporting on the Las Vegas scene under the moniker of Tuley the Journalist while he also offers free sports and horse racing selections under the tongue-in-cheek title of Tuley the Tout. The site also has a posting forum for readers to go on record with their own picks, or ask questions of Tuley or the other members of the forum, which is expected to include many others from the Vegas sports betting community.

The impetus behind the site is to bring Tuley’s insights to a broader audience as he feels there is a void in the mainstream sports media, and he wants to give both serious bettors and casual sports fans the View from Vegas.

As the viewfromvegas.com home page states: “This site will not try to be the place you come for all your sports news (we'll leave that to ESPN et al), but instead it strives to be the place that you visit after you watch the games, read the stories or watch the sports recap shows in order to get the "View from Vegas" on how oddsmakers and bettors in this city viewed the action. Then, the hope is you'll stick around to get previews of upcoming events in the sporting world as well as how the news of the day affects odds on future games.”

Even though viewfromvegas.com has a forum that will be open to questions and suggestions about dining and shows and other aspects of the Vegas experience, Tuley said he doesn’t see his site as being in competition with everythinglv.com. “That is a very small part of my site,” he said. “My focus will be mostly on what happens in the race and sports books here, but obviously those bettors also have interest in good entertainment, good meals and coupon deals, but I will certainly defer to Steve Kieva in those areas. But I hope his readers and members of his forum will see viewfromvegas.com as a complement when they’re looking for sports betting news and advice.”

Very quietly and with little celebration, the New Frontier closed its doors this past weekend to make room for a new resort property from El-Ad, the owners of New York City’s legendary Plaza Hotel. Such legendary acts as Siegfried and Roy, Elvis Presley, and Diana Ross all once called the Frontier home. Perhaps what it may best be known for however, is the holder of the record for the nation’s largest on-going work stoppage, which lasted 2,325 days (09/91 – 02/98).

NORM: Britney Spears has her eye on Vegas

It's looking more like Britney Spears may have Las Vegas in mind for her comeback launch.

The recently rehabbed pop princess may be in town twice in nine days, starting with her Aug. 31 appearance as celebrity host of the opening of LAX Nightclub at Luxor and a rumored Sept. 9 appearance in the MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms.

It would be Spears' first bona fide public music appearance since 2004.

Palms owner George Maloof, who has cultivated a close relationship with Spears, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Celebrity Web site perezhilton.com reported Wednesday that rumors are circulating that Spears is "rehearsing to make her big comeback" at the VMA's.

Spears, who flirted with the idea of becoming a Vegas headliner a few years ago, included Las Vegas on her mini-tour in May when she and a group of her backup dancers appeared at the House of Blues. Her appearance amounted to 15 minutes of lip-synching.

Lady Luck put on 'fast track'
Developer says closed property may be operating by '09.

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN /LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The Hollywood-based developers taking over the Lady Luck hotel and casino hope to reopen the shuttered property within two years and transform a segment of downtown that's been losing steam since early 2006.

On Wednesday, John Given of the CIM Group told the Las Vegas City Council his firm is taking over the Lady Luck from the current owners and will make it a priority to put the closed casino "on the fastest track to turn the lights back on."

It was Given's first appearance before the City Council, and council members and the owner of a Third Street bar that has struggled since the Lady Luck closed in February 2006 gave his plans enthusiastic support.

He was there seeking an exclusive negotiating agreement between the CIM Group and the city for land that is now home to Frank Wright Plaza, which is now a small park. The agreement, which the council approved unanimously, gives CIM Group the right to buy 5.5 acres from the city to use as part of a revived Lady Luck.

Comic Transforms Into Roseanne Barr
From:www.accessvegas.com

Jimmy Emerson is now hosting "La Cage" at the Riviera as Roseanne Barr.

He said, "I will still be doing my comedic characters of 'Madonna's Bigger Sister' and 'Tammy Spraynette' but now you will get to see my monologue as Roseanne Barr who recently played The Strip. I'm going to include a little Ethel Merman, Peggy Lee and Anna Nicole Smith along with a couple of other big gals."

From the time he was a toddler growing up in Orange, Texas, Jimmy Emerson knew he wanted to entertain people. In elementary school when the other kids said they wanted to be firefighters or astronauts or police officers, Jimmy told everyone he wanted to be a star.

With that in mind, he studied tap, ballet, jazz and modern dance. He learned to ice skate and twirl a baton. He took singing lessons.

Being a drama major at Lamar University in Beaumont was not enough; Jimmy had to study mime at Stockton State College, voice and speech with Lorraine Condor and take an acting workshop at Weist-Barron.

Before he was old enough to vote, he had appeared in numerous stage shows, using his strong yet lyrical tenor voice as well as his acting and dancing talents to pull in great reviews every time.

His list of acting credits is impressive, as he has played roles as diverse as Herbie in Sweet Charity, Mr. Bumble in Oliver!, Captain Hook in Peter Pan and Thomas Cromwell in A Man for All Seasons.

He has trod the boards at prestigious venues, such as Dallas Summer Musical Theatre, Theatre Under the Stars in Houston and South Jersey Regional Theatre.

Somewhere along the line, he discovered he had a talent for stand-up comedy and the sort of glib, quick wit that made him much sought after as an emcee. It was then that he created his first female character: Roxie Starr.

In 1984, he auditioned for Breck Wall's famous comedy-review Bottoms Up and was hired instantly to be the lead in the touring company of the show, while Breck continued to play the lead in the Las Vegas company. When the tour ended, Breck hired him on as a member of the Las Vegas cast.

From there, he went on to Atlantic City for a stint in An Evening at La Cage, where he developed comedy look-alikes as Peggy Lee, Tammy Wynette and Ann Miller. He took the essence of the Wynette character and developed a truly hysterical country-western trailer-trash marvel who goes by the name of Tammy Spraynette and has been a popular mainstay in Jimmy's La Cage performances–and even appeared on the Phil Donahue Show.

During the following years, he alternated between top Las Vegas shows and his cabaret act, playing all over the United States, as well as in South America and Europe. Somehow, he found a way to do all that and also appear in commercials (including Dr. Pepper and K-Mart), work in a couple of movies (Wise Guys, Bleeding Hearts), and even do a stint on a TV soap (The Center).

In his spare time, he started his own successful production company, producing and directing shows with up to 18 members in the cast.

But Jimmy wants more. He wants to put together a one-man performance that would display a variety of his original characters and allow him to use all his talents in one presentation–acting, dancing, singing, comedy and more. Yes, he has his eye on Broadway and is working with a team of writers to put together the show.

His downtime is spent cooking, entertaining, swimming, jet-skiing and drinking copious amounts of vodka.

La Cage can be seen nightly at 7:30 pm except Tuesdays.

NORM: Tao Beach club gets back on top

Bikini tops are back in vogue at Tao Beach, after a brief experiment as a topless pool venue at The Venetian. The 18,000-square-foot European-style beach club opened May 4, joining a half dozen other tops-optional venues.

The owners pulled the plug quickly. Operations ceased in June "due to management's decision to create a different experience," a Tao insider said.

"It was more of a brand decision," according to a source close to the New York-based company. "They decided to pull back and focus on a more sophisticated crowd."

Located on the roof, away from the main pool, Tao Beach was an extension of Tao Asian Bistro and Tao nightclub. It was a topless venue from 10 a.m. to sunset, then turned into a nightclub.

Singers focus on music, not looking like Frank.
By: Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

"Shades of Sinatra" has come a long way since it debuted at Turnberry Place's Stirling Club more than two years ago.

Kelly Clinton, the club's entertainment director, cleverly brought together three tribute artists who sing Frank Sinatra songs. (And provided comic relief on opening night with an Elvis shtick.)

Ryan Baker, Carmine Mandia and Larry Liso don't look like Sinatra. They don't especially sound like him either ( Baker comes the closest).

But each is an excellent vocalist who does justice to Sinatra's music.

Since that first night, producer Clinton has taken the trio of crooners all over town, including the Bootlegger and several casinos.

This month "Shades of Sinatra" is at the Suncoast on Monday nights. The first two performances were sold out. Tickets are going fast for the next two.

Baker, Mandia and Liso are still in the cast, but Clinton replaced herself with Lisa Smith, who has one of the strongest female voices around and isn't shy about using it.

It's a highly entertaining little show - well conceived, perceptive and intelligently assembled. The singers play off one another, moving on and off stage as numbers segue .

Greatly enhancing the performance is the Ned Mills Orchestra. Mills has one of the finest musical minds in town and pops up everywhere.

His five-piece band, dressed in tuxedos, gave a lot of class to a show that already had a lot of class.

RUDNER EXTENDED
From: Lenny's Las Vegas

Here's some very good news. Rita Rudner, without doubt one of the funniest, if not the funniest female comedians in the world, has signed an agreement to extend her stay as headliner at Harrah's until January 2010. "I love working here," said Rudner. "I love all the people at Harrah's, the theater is beautiful and the audiences have been fantastic. When they say I've been extended, does that mean I'm taller?"

This extension means Rudner will pass the one million tickets sold mark some time next year. Her Las Vegas Strip run began six years ago. In addition, Rudner introduced a $20 Locals' Appreciation ticket for July and August. A limited number of tickets will be available to Las Vegas residents on a first-come-first-served basis.

Rudner is also continuing down the literary path with her fifth book; a collection of essays about being in your fifties entitled "I Can't Believe I'm Filthy." The book will be published later this year. She is also working on two television projects, in one of which she and comedian Jon Lovitz will play a brother and a sister, forced to live together in middle-age.

I talked to her just a few minutes ago, asking her about the project, but she said, "I don't want to say too much as it's still in the very early stages. But I will say that we have some of the finest writers in television working on it and we're very excited." On a sad note, Rudner told me that Bonkers, her pet dog of 15 years, had passed away last month. "It was very difficult. I don't know yet if or when I'll get another one. I'm not just ready yet."

[The end] Our stay in the Frontier
By:John Katssilometes/Las Vegas Weekly

The woman in the snug Wrangler jeans and crimson tank top read the sign aloud, practically spitting the words. “‘Mud wrestling has been cancelled!’ Oh my God! C’mon, c’mon. We’re outta here.” With that, the man in tow—it might have been her boyfriend, or husband, or even her mud-wrestling trainer—was yanked by the arm and led out of Gilley’s Saloon and Dance Hall at the New Frontier. The blushing couple didn’t notice a more conciliatory handwritten sign near the entrance, saying, “We’ll miss you all.”

Cancelled mud wrestling and a simply “so long, y’all” were the signs of the times last week as the Frontier, which opened in 1942 as the Hotel Last Frontier, ambled to its day of closing, which was Sunday. At every turn there were unique sights, sounds and even odors of an aged resort experiencing its death rattle.

Off-Strip Success

Chef/owner Susan Rispoli continues to win over an impressive list of fans at her Italian comfort food haven, JR's Place, located at Durango at I-215. Last week, she held a wine dinner at the unassuming outlet where she put away the casual, come-as-you-are fare to flex some old country charm with dishes that had Vegas socialites in attendance buzzing for more. Lobster and white truffle risotto, burrata cheese and heirloom tomatoes, even zabaglione! The list of valley residents who stopped by to partake in the wine dinner are all JR's regulars, a good indication that Rispoli has won over their stomachs and hearts: MGM Mirage VP Richard Sturm, local Tequila magnate Ed Brown, Hannah's namesake Hannah An, dentist to the stars Pat Simone, Rampart Casino honcho Gil Cohen, designer to the rich Joanna Lucia, Rolls Royce-Bentley bigwig Ron Giger, heck, even caviar dreamer Robin Leach was present and impressed with the turnout. "The parking lot was really impressive," Rispoli laughed noting that the usual allotment of Mercedes, BMW's and Jaguars are nothing new, but that night's lot belonged in front of the Wynn, "Rolls Royces, Bentleys, even two Ferraris!," she exclaimed. While another wine dinner is in the works, you don't have to wait to stop by JR's and see what everyone is raving about. Not only is her food fantastic, but we also love seeing independent chefs as talented as Rispoli having success off the Strip.

Getting Social

For the main course, three of Social House's most popular dishes await, as diners will have to make the tough decision between the chicken teriyaki, tamarind short rib and citrus peel miso cod. All of the dishes are served with steamed white rice. With a sweet tooth in mind, Social House makes sure every guest leaves happy and full before departing for their show, offering an assortment of mochi ice cream or warm chocolate cake with Kona coffee ice cream for dessert. Nothing short of a Miracle.
By:Tammy L. Culp/Las Vegas Magazine.

If shopping is an addiction, then the International Council of Shopping Centers has found the perfect way to turn vice into vocation. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the ICSC returns to Las Vegas to host the 2007 Spring Convention, May 20-23, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 65,000-member group is made up of industry leaders from across the world striving to advance the shopping
center industry. ISCS is where shopping begins, and there is no better homage to the people who feed our best habit than with a look at the fabulous retail emporiums here in Vegas.

Miracle Mile Shops at
Planet Hollywood Resort
Nothing Short of a Miracle

On May 1, 1967, the King of Rock ’n’ Roll deemed Aladdin Resort the appropriate venue to wed his beautiful fiancée, Priscilla. More than 40 years later, following an implosion and rebuilding, the historical property has gone through yet another dramatic transformation. The newly unveiled Planet Hollywood Resort has looked to Los Angeles for inspiration, allowing each guest to feel like a celebrity in his or her own right. The fabulous banana belt is adorned in a chic and ultra modern décor, complemented perfectly with vibrant music playing throughout.

Obviously, a resort themed after the rich and famous wouldn’t be complete without offering a shopping experience fit for stars. Previously known as the Shops in Desert Passage, Miracle Mile Shops provides a center-Strip shopping extravaganza. The circular mall stretches more than 1.2 miles and features more than 140 stores with more set to open in the coming year. The shopping center’s renovations are continuing in stages through 2008; however, the new contemporary interior and exterior design also allows for easier access and convenience to the spectacular retailers, restaurants and entertainers. The curb appeal is heightened with brighter lights, bigger signs and inviting glass storefronts, creating an energy rivaling Tinsel Town.

Whether you’re on a quest for top designers and unique accessories or the finest collectibles and home furnishings, Miracle Mile Shops leaves nothing to be desired. BCBG Max Azria and Bebe provide essential attire for Vegas nightlife, while Ben Sherman and French Connection have the perfect ensemble for a fantastic dinner at Pampas Brazilian Grille followed by V—The Ultimate Variety Show, also conveniently located within the shopping mecca. If your skin needs a little pick-me-up after a day in the desert sun, H2O+ and Sephora have the solution with ideal products in health and beauty. Or pop into Urban Outfitters, where you can find anything fun and funky, from apparel and accessories to home décor and books. And master illusionist Steve Wyrick’s entertainment complex offers a magical diversion to a day of shopping. So spend a day on Sunset, Rodeo, Wilshire and even Melrose without ever leaving Las Vegas.

Hours are 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. (702) 866-0710, (888) 800-8284

Las Vegas Premium Outlets
Premium savings

Comedian Rita Rudner explains to the gentleman in her show that shopping isn’t about spending money, it’s about saving money: “If you pay $300 for a dress that originally cost $600, you didn’t spend $300, you saved $300.” Las Vegas Premium Outlets allows you to do just that—save a lot of money on designer fashions, children’s apparel, jewelry and accessories, as well as luggage, leather and home furnishings. Shop from A/X Armani Exchange to Brooks Brothers and feel as if you’re spending a day in the park in the beautiful outdoor setting.

Hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sun. 875 S. Grand Central Parkway. (702) 474-7500

The Forum Shops at Caesars
A funny thing happened while in the Forum

Our beloved Carrie from Sex in the City once said, “I like money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet.” The Forum Shops at Caesars has held the spot as the most successful retail venue in the nation for a reason—Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, Gianni Versace and Harry Winston, in company with sensational others for starters. Pieces by these esteemed designers hang proudly in any experienced shopper’s closet. Outstanding dining and entertainment are also found among the shops and boutiques, housed in an edifice famous for its beauty and ambience.

Hours are 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. (702) 893-4800

Las Vegas Outlet Center
Your shopping outlet

“Shopping is a woman thing. It’s a contact sport like football. Women enjoy the scrimmage, the noisy crowds, the danger of being trampled to death and the ecstasy of the purchase.” Erma Bombeck describes the thrill of shopping, and it’s an experience you’ll find at Las Vegas Outlet Center. But it’s not just a woman thing anymore. Stores such as Ashworth-Callaway Golf, Nike, and Tommy Hilfiger evoke the desire in men to pull out their credit cards as well. You’ll find 130 outlet stores with designer fashions, jewelry, gifts, children’s and speciality items at prices you can’t afford to miss.

Hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sun. 7400 Las Vegas Blvd. S. (702) 896-5599

The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian
Grand shopping

“Whoever said money can’t buy happiness simply didn’t know where to go shopping.” Perhaps Bo Derek has visited The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian. This unique shopping experience offers authentic Italian gondola rides, magical serenades and various performances that take visitors on a journey through the most divine places in Italy. Along the canal, shoppers not only can find the latest fashions, but also spectacular art galleries, gift shops and restaurants featuring world-renowned chefs. Another 350,000 square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment is joining The Grand Canal Shoppes following the completion of the Palazzo at the end of 2007, providing an even grander excuse to go shopping.

Hours are 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat. (702) 414-4500

Fashion Show
The runway of ultimate fashion

Tammy Faye Bakker once explained her shopping habits, saying, “I always say shopping is cheaper than a psychiatrist.” That depends on where you shop and just how much retail therapy is necessary, but Fashion Show provides the perfect comfy sofa to forget all your worries and woes. The mall is one of the largest retail locations in the nation, with more than 250 magnificent stores and restaurants. The latest trends and styles are modeled, Friday through Sunday from noon-6 p.m., on the runway providing its name and a dose of entertainment.

Hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sat., 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun. Las Vegas Boulevard South and Spring Mountain Road. (702) 369-8382

Quick-Reviews: Shows By Rick Garman

This is the second in a series of quick recap reviews of all the things I experienced in my last research trip to Las Vegas. I’ll have full reviews of everything I got to see and do in this column, on Vegas4Visitors.com, and in the next edition of the Moon Handbooks Las Vegas (due in stores later this year) but for now I wanted to give you the highlights and lowlights, this week focusing on shows. I saw five and ¼ shows while I was in town (more on that in a moment) and if this was a competition the clear winner would be Monty Python’s Spamalot, now playing at Wynn Las Vegas. This Tony-Award winner is a deliriously silly and endlessly entertaining bit of madness about the knights of King Arthur’s court on a madcap mission to find the Holy Grail. Most everything you remember from the movie is there – the flying cows, the killer beast that guards the cave (don’t want to ruin it for those who haven’t seen it), the puns, the jokes, the pratfalls, and the absurdist, almost surreal humor all set to an eminently hummable score. Although shortened to 90 minutes or so and tweaked with some Vegas-specific gags (think Excalibur), I didn’t think it suffered in the translation at all. The cast is terrific but this is a show that depends more on the strength of the material than any name-brand actors in the cast so I think it could have a pretty long life here no matter who is in the lead roles.

The same can’t be said of The Producers, another Tony-Award winning Broadway transplant now playing at Paris Las Vegas. This is a terrific musical, based on the Mel Brooks movie about a pair of producers trying to put on the worst show in history. It is funny and filled with great music, but it is one of those shows that seems to depend heavily on the people in the lead roles, most often associated with the guys who originated them on Broadway and in the feature film version, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The Broadway vets currently in the roles in Vegas are terrific, but there’s something about the frenetic energy and pacing of the show, especially as it too has been crammed into 90 minutes that makes it a bit exhausting especially if you’ve seen either the show or the movie. If you haven’t seen either, go see this version. If you have, well, go see Spamalot.

While you’re there you could pick up tickets for Le Reve, also playing at Wynn Las Vegas. When I first saw this show in 2005, I liked it but thought the Cirque du Soleil style imagery and acts were derivative and at times disturbing. Since then the show and the theater in which it is housed have gotten makeovers and this time I really enjoyed it. The main character, a person who falls asleep and wanders through a dream world, was a man but is now a woman and that seems to have made a major difference, dialing down the (perceived or otherwise) misogyny and amping up the romanticism. The water based stunts (diving, swimming, acrobatics above and around) have been streamlined as well and while there are still a few disconcerting visuals they seem to have a much more comforting overall context.

I also love the new VIP seats – big plushy chairs that ring the top row of the theater with built in monitors to watch the action above, backstage, and underwater. It’s difficult at first to get used to it – as is the case with most of these types of shows there is too much going on at once anyway to catch it all, but once you get the hang of when to look at the video screens (most notably when someone hits the water from a high distance) it really adds to the show. Plus the seats come with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries complimentary in the price of the ticket. Since those go for roughly the same cost as the top tickets at the similar water-based show O at Bellagio, which don’t come with booze and treats, I’m going to have to kick the advantage over here.

Toni Braxton has defied extremely negative early reviews to become quite the draw at The Flamingo and for good reason. She’s got a great voice, looks fantastic, and is a hell of an entertainer even if you don’t know her music all that well, but none of those are the good reason I mentioned. Instead it is her performance attitude, seizing the mantle of Vegas sex kitten from An-Margret and reinventing it for the new millennium. Don’t worry, there’s nothing even R-rated in this show – instead it is Toni as vamp, vixen, and naughty girl who likes to croon from laps of handsome male audience members, after politely asking permission from accompanying females of course. On the night I was there she even got the mayor of a major southern city up on stage for a little hip shaking and the whole thing was delightful.

Another delight was found at the new Planet Hollywood theater hosting Stomp Out Loud, a bigger, bolder, badder (in a good way) version of the long-running Stomp series. This one was not much different in concept from its origins, with a cast of people creating music from found objects like brooms, dust pans, boxes, newspapers, water jugs, pipes, lighters, and of course the signature trash can lids. It’s inspiring to watch these people create intricately crafted symphonies out of little more than trash and the fact that the cast is a melting pot of races, genders, ages, and body types makes this feel like art the way it was meant to be: inclusive.

So that’s five shows. Oh, yeah, almost forgot. The quarter.

I saw Steve Wyrick at The Sahara years ago and didn’t enjoy his show. I’m not a fan of what I call “whirling blades of death” magic, where the illusionist straps himself to something sharp and tries to make the audience believe there is some danger involved in what he’s doing. Will he be sliced to bits by the whirling blades of death?! Well, no. And so I am bored.

Wyrick has a new theater with his name on it at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and so I went back to check out if the new environs changed my opinion of the show at all. Unfortunately it didn’t. The performance started almost 30 minutes late without explanation and just as I was getting ready to leave in frustration. I watched the first four tricks, recognized them (or versions of them) from the original show at The Sahara (including one with actual whirling blades of death – a mock jet turbine engine), and decided I had seen enough especially since staying for the entire show would’ve made me 30 minutes late for the next appointment I had to keep.

Next time start on time and maybe I’ll be in a better mood.

Japanese revue moves quickly, carries Cirque genes.
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

I hope to be covering entertainment 20 years from now so I can cover the premier of Cirque du Soleil's 37th production on the Strip.

By then every acrobat in the world may be employed in Las Vegas.

Cirque du Soleil has five shows and three more in the wings. The winning formula of acrobats, comedy, choreography and visual artistry also can be seen in Franco Dragone's "Le Reve" and his creation for Celine Dion, "A New Day …" And "Ice: Direct From Russia" mixes ice skaters and acrobats at the Riviera.

The dynamic, fast-paced Japanese revue "Matsuri" returns to Las Vegas on May 29 at the Sahara.

The cast of 28 athletes performing lots of music, acrobatics and extreme sports had a monthlong showcase a year ago at the Riviera.

Details: 7 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays; $69.95-$79.95, $39.95 for children; 737-2515.

Blue-collar magician
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

Dixie Dooley is a blue-collar kind of magician. He's made a decent living in this town for more than 25 years being a nuts-and-bolts kind of performer who is noted for his Houdini-like escapes.

He manages to do some amazing things these days at the Westin, which has a small theater that was once the home of David Brenner, "Forbidden Vegas" and a few other shows that never made it.

A lot of the problem is the location. It's at Koval Lane and East Flamingo Road - not on the Strip but not so far fans couldn't walk it if they knew what was going on there.

That points to another issue. The shows have also suffered from a lack of marketing.

And Dooley has an additional obstacle to overcome - Hans Klok, whose high-budget, internationally acclaimed show debuts just down the street at Planet Hollywood on May 31.

Dooley's low-budget production, which started about a month ago, will pale by comparison.

So don't compare. Check out Dooley and his three dancing showgirls (one is his wife and co-producer, Julie). You won't be awed by huge tricks or disappearing tigers, but you will be amazed by some of the magic he creates on the tiny stage at the Westin.

And he's added a touch of humor to his latest production - dusting off his ventriloquist bit from years ago and performing a nonmagic routine with his dummy, Jake.

Details: 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays; $39.95-$45; 457-8448

The Fashionistas
Reviewed May 2007 By Nancy Dickinson.
From
www.accessvegas.com

The fashion industry probably didn't know the raw passion it could spawn through music, story, and dance…but leave it to Vegas to bring forth the goods.

Fashionistas, a hot seam ripping new show at the Empire Ballroom is based on tales of an innovative fashion fetish company, vivacious women seductresses, and the domineering love triangles some very sexy (and certainly masochistic) characters have managed to sew together. The result stitches a new, dark, seductive face upon the fashion industry that is unafraid of celebrating shape and form in all things fabric and flesh.

The Empire Ballroom is the perfect dim and cozy sexual sanctuary for Fashionistas. With a slight Gothic and tastefully burlesque feel to the showroom, the place urges a "show some skin" attitude (and a little leather never hurts anyone either). Large, inviting red couches allow audience members to let it all hang out, but the enormous and grand crystal chandeliers above remind everyone that no matter how far things may dip where the sun don't shine, there still needs some class.

A faux fashion show starts off the material madness; complete with lanky, nose in the air runway models in light, colorful dress. The show takes a satirical turn as the music cuts out and the stage is overthrown by hard female bodies in black leather bondage. Spitting and frothing, these girls are ripping out hair to metal music and representing the veritable yin and yang of fashion. Or perhaps, conventional fashion and it's evil twin. Both sexy nonetheless.

For some true Vegas show spirit amongst flinging fabric, an aerial act ascends and descends above the crowd provoking awe from all. Two incredibly built women demonstrate the most intense display of strength and sexual power as they weave themselves through a soft thick ribbon hanging from the sky. Their very naughty, very flattering garments consist of what just looks like a bunch of leather straps enveloping a perfect shape in all the right spots. The contrast of the tough leather rubbing vigorously against flawless silk states that even though they may be opposites to the touch, they still work beautifully together.

A few other factors of fashion, however, raise no question as to if they're wearable…strappy shoes and a nice rack. A hot number about a clan of gorgeous seducing a shoe salesman makes everyone watching truly heated in their heels. And large breasts are all the obsession in the fashion world inspiring a quirky cheerleading routine to an Electronica music song, "I Must Increase my Busts!" And the clothing chaos doesn't stop there.

Bizarre, new age, satirically space age fashion forward costumes roam the stage while domineering acts of seduction make toes curl throughout the entire show. Obviously, Fashionistas is insisting that fashion carry no boundaries in it's sewing kit. Sexuality, layered on the right fearless fabric, with even a little lovin' leather stitched in, definitely makes a very wearable outfit.
