New Frontier owners to seek funding; hotel to close July 15.
By HOWARD STUTZ REVIEW/LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL
The New York-based private-ownership group buying the New Frontier's 34.5-acre Strip location is expected to seek financing from Israel's largest investment company for up to $8 billion to redevelop the site.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the New Frontier said Tuesday the 984-room Western-themed hotel-casino will close at midnight July 15.
Elad Group, which is controlled by Israeli billionaire Yitzhak Tshuva, said in May it would pay more than $1.2 billion for the New Frontier site and spend $5 billion more to construct a replica of New York's famous Plaza Hotel. The complex would include a casino and a hotel with 3,500 rooms and 300 private residences.

Planet Hollywood - The VegasTripping Review 2007
I think it's the classic song from The Who that goes, "New room, same as the old room…", or something like that. It could be the theme song for the rooms at the newly renamed Aladdin, now called Planet Hollywood. Having signed up for the Aladdin players club in the past, and thus being on their mailing list, we received an invitation in the mail to come stay at the new Planet Hollywood. We were excited to be among the first wave of people to see the improvements. Plus, we got four nights for the price of three with our "special invitation" deal.
Miss Melody and I arrived for our four night stay at the new Planet Hollywood by taxi early on Sunday afternoon. We entered the revamped lobby with it's shiny black floors and ultra-hip neon-adorned walls slowly changing color from red to green to purple. I noticed the new Planet Hollywood logo, a red, lower-case "ph" within a circle. It kind of reminded me of an unimaginative tech company's logo, while it made Miss Melody think of the hemorrhoidal cooling gel Preparation H.

NORM: Local columnists exchange barbs
The fur is flying — or at least the leopard-print fake fur — in a catfight between two columnists on the periphery of local entertainment journalism.
An Internet entertainment columnist said she fears for her safety after twice being verbally accosted at media events by Gaming Today entertainment columnist Monti Rock III.
Esther Lynn, who writes under the nom de plume of Claire Voyant, said she has gone to Clark County authorities about seeking a restraining order against faux fur aficionado Rock, a 1970s gay icon who had a cameo in "Saturday Night Fever."
Lynn said the incidents occurred on May 24 at a media event for Venetian headliner Wayne Brady and on June 2 at Planet Hollywood Resort's introduction of "The Beauty of Magic."
Rock used "disgusting" language in both cases and called her a cripple during the second outburst, said Lynn, who requires a wheelchair.
She said her response after the second incident was: "Your 15 minutes of fame were over 50 years ago." She added, in an interview Wednesday, "I can be mean, too." They had no previous history of bad blood, she said. A longtime Las Vegas entertainment writer and publicist, she skewers local writers, headliners and publicists in her column and in scathing e-mails.
She has not taken legal action against Rock but characterized him as a "sub-species" in her column.
In an e-mail Thursday, Rock said, "To be verbally assaulted and criticized for no apparent reason is no fun. To discuss this any further is beneath me as I'm above all that."

SHOW REVIEW: "MATSURI": Balancing Act
Acrobatics showcase 'Matsuri' a great alternative to magic shows
By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
It's not a unique sensation to walk out of a Las Vegas show feeling as though you enjoyed it more than you had any right to.
Some might even call that the very essence of Vegas entertainment: The dual appeal to those who haven't seen a live show in years and those who know their way around a theater, but still cave to the guilty pleasures of a magic or a balancing act.
In the case of "Matsuri," it's fairly easy to explain the likability of a Japanese acrobatics showcase that makes up in energy what it sometimes lacks in real content. Just look at the young faces of the 30-some performers and you see a convincing level of innocent joy there; not a trace of the insincere hackery often lurking behind the cheesy smiles of the usual suspects.

PARIS PLANS OR PLANT?
By Norm Clarke/Las Vegas Review Journal
The Hard Rock Hotel did not respond Wednesday to requests for comment on a published report that the property's new management was paying Paris Hilton $800,000 to host her own "Get Out of Jail" party and a New Year's Eve bash.
The staggering appearance fee was met with scoffs and skepticism at rival clubs.
"It's a publicity stunt," said a club executive.
A day earlier, the New York Post's Page Six gossip column reported Hilton's father, Rick, was shopping the party in Las Vegas for $50,000. That most likely was a preemptive plant by a competing club playing dirty tricks.
Meanwhile, e-mail invitations to Lindsay Lohan's 21st birthday party at Pure nightclub at Caesars Palace continued this week, suggesting that the rehabbing actress is going ahead with party plans.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Ooh La La' raises some eyebrows.
Another new girlie show on the Strip? That's no surprise. And yet, a couple of eyebrow-raisers come with the new "Ooh La La," which opened Wednesday at Paris Las Vegas if all went to plan.
First is that most performances will be at 7 p.m. That's early for a topless revue, at least by conventional standards. "Everybody thinks I'm crazy," agrees Anthony Cools, who is producing it as a roommate production for his hypnotism show in the 300-seat venue that carries his name.
But he thinks it will reduce competition for every performance except two late shows, at 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Cools also figures 7 p.m. is a late show if you flew into Las Vegas from the East Coast that day. Or, if you're in town for a bachelor party, "you can see it before you start drinking" in the dance clubs or strip joints.

DOLPHIN CALF BORN AT THE MIRAGE
Duchess, a bottlenose dolphin at The Mirage Dolphin Habitat, gave birth Friday night at 11:27 p.m. Both mother and calf appear to be doing well. Shortly after the delivery, the calf swam to the water’s surface, took its first breath and began to swim and bond with its mother.
The calf began to nurse a short time later, successfully marking another of several critical challenges in the first hours and days of its life. It must still overcome a number of other important milestones in its first months.
Knowing the dolphin was near full-term in her pregnancy, Duchess had been under 24-hour watch by Dolphin Habitat Animal Care staff for the week leading up to the birth. Mother and calf will remain under 24-hour observation for several weeks.
Animal Care staff will not handle the calf for several weeks, so precise weight and measurements are not available. Staff has determined the calf is a male.
The Mirage Dolphin Habitat is accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums. The veterinary and marine mammal staffs at The Mirage are utilizing knowledge gained through their successful dolphin breeding program, as well as from other institutions to help Duchess and her calf through these important first weeks.
“Everyone at The Mirage is thrilled about the news,” said Jim Hudson, Curator of Dolphin Care at the Mirage Dolphin Habitat. “We’re happy to have a new member of our family, but we must remain cautiously optimistic right now. Dolphin calves are very delicate through their entire first year of life. Duchess is an experienced mother and she appears to be bonding well with the new calf. We have excellent facilities and staff at The Mirage and we stand ready to assist both mother and calf in any way we can.”
Duchess is one of five adult dolphins at The Mirage. She came to the Dolphin Habitat in 1990. The calf’s father is Lightning, a dolphin that arrived at The Mirage in 2006, from Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City, Fla., specifically to breed with the female dolphins at The Mirage.
Duchess and her calf will remain in the Mirage Research and Birthing pool, which is the most familiar and comfortable environment for them. The pool is open to the public and visitors to the Dolphin Habitat can see both mother and calf immediately.
Before You Visit The Casino By Bill Burton
When I visit the casino there are certain items that I like to bring along with me. I call it my casino survival kit and most of these will fit right into my pocket. Before you visit the casino consider taking along some of these items. Hopefully it will make your casino visit more enjoyable and profitable.
Have a Game Plan
Many players simply go to the casino with a pocket full of money and jump from game to game until all their money is gone. I have yet to find anyone who can honestly admit that losing all their money during a casino visit was an enjoyable experience. You can have a much better time if you just spend a few minutes to make a plan for your next casino visit. I would like to offer you some suggestions for “planning” you next visit.

From "The Vegas Eye"
That Voodoo That You Do.
We broke the news about the name and menu changes for longtime Rio mainstay, Voodoo Café now Voodoo Steak, several months ago but last week we finally got a chance to stop by and see the transformation for ourselves. While the restaurant itself remains pretty much unchanged, it just goes to show how a renewed commitment to service and new menu focus can bring energy into an establishment. Not only has former Fiore and 3121 Jazz Cuisine executive chef Honorio Mecinas moved his offices to the top of the building, but he has brought several members of Fiore’s fine dining service staff with him to help re-enforce Voodoo’s transformation. Mecinas’ first act as Voodoo Steak’s top chef was to create the Rio’s new Rio Dry Aged Beef Program (RDA) which uses breed specific Angus beef and a customized aging process to serve up quite possibly some of the city’s finest cuts of meat which includes a marbled masterpiece of imported Australian wagyu rib-eye that starts at 5 ounces and goes up from there, along with its menu price of course. While there are some holdovers from the Voodoo Café menu, Mecinas’ new dishes provide an opportunity to shine while he creates a new category, the Louisiana Steakhouse. Dishes like the jaw-dropping good Andouille sausage Beignets with pepper jack fondue, lobster muffuletta salad and creole crab cakes are perfect highlights of how Mecinas is pushing a steakhouse menu with Cajun and creole inspiration. One of the former Fiore waiters who followed the chef to his new scenic gigs was Daniel Tavares, son of former Las Vegas master sommelier Angelo Tavares. While following in his father’s footsteps, and nearing his Advanced Sommelier exam, he is a stellar example of service standards to be followed. With dedicated servers like Tavares, the Rio hopes to push the service standards to a level higher than had ever previously been seen at Voodoo. While it’s a work in progress, it’s definitely on the right track. Voodoo Steak works because it blends the familiar with the new and throws in a breathtaking view for good luck. Flippin Out The world of flair bartending was turned on its head last week at the Ultimate Flair Bartending Competition when 5-time consecutive Tandem World Champions Christian Oldan and Juan Llorente shattered the benchmark for tandem flair performances with a Cirque du Soleil-inspired ode to Absinthe. But let’s backtrack a moment to see how we got here. For months now, the talented Argentinean bottle-flippers had extended their training regimen to include basic gymnastics to perfect the array of flips and somersaults they had been doing behind the bar at Caesars’ homage to flair, Shadow Lounge. They hooked up with trainer Joshua Carlson, who works at an Olympic-style training facility in Henderson, sometimes used by Cirque artists for training and auditions, and the training grew from there. “I started helping them with basic back flips and things like that,” said Carlson, “from there we realized the potential and just kept going.” Going into the championship, the pair was dead-set on creating a flair experience that would far surpass anything ever done before. “We created a whole show based on Absinthe,” Oldan told the Eye, “We had a painter on the side of the stage, drinking Absinthe and going crazy,” he continued referring to the long history of the drink favored by artists ranging from Vincent Van Gogh to Pablo Picasso, most likely for its hallucinatory qualities. “We had a girl dressed as a green fairy dancing around stage as Juan and I did our show,” said Oldan of the show which also included a muddler-sword battle and a staged fight with fake-glass bottles. While five-bottle tricks and multi-pours are difficult, yet standard for flair bartenders, never before had any aerialist tricks ever been used, until now. Oldan worked with Harrah’s F&B honcho Shaun Ritchie to approve proper rigging, insurance and liability issues would be approved, and after a $3 million life insurance policy was purchased by the pair, they got the go-ahead. “When Christian and I initially discussed the concept, he said he wanted to use a swing but I told him that there is so much more we can do with silks,” Carlson continued referring to the aerial art which uses two long curtains of silk and is featured in many different shows along the Strip including several Cirque du Soleil performances. “Nothing like this had ever been used in flair competition before,” Oldan added with a smile, “people were blown away.” Once the pair had finished their show, to a frenzied audience, the contest was all but finished with Oldan and Llorente walking away with their 6th consecutive Tandem World Championship. We wanted to congratulate the pair on not only this amazing feat, but also for pushing the boundaries and raising the standards for flair bartenders everywhere. Buoyed by the success of their recent championship performance, the pair is now busy working with Carlson on all-new tricks for their next flair contest as well as planning on launching a new website that will offer their unique brand of bartending for corporate and special events, Drinking Downtown LAS VEGAS HILTON'S 'SOUNDS OF SUMMER CONCERT SERIES' SPANS SMOOTH JAZZ TO ULTIMATE PARTY BAND TO COUNTRY SUPERSTARS. With a name like the Downtown Cocktail Room, you better believe that proprietor Michael Cornthwaite is offering up some delicious cocktails at his ultra-cool downtown watering hole. Located on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street, his intimate cocktail room is truly the first step in creating an up-scale and chic cocktail scene downtown. After several years as a nightlife guru in the corporate environment, Cornthwaite stepped away, convinced that Vegas’ homage to the past deserved more than plastic footballs filled with beer and 2-foot tall daiquiris. At the Cocktail Room, several specialty drinks would make even the most ardent mixologist jealous including the absolutely sublime Watermelon Cucumber Martini made with freshly muddled watermelon and cucumber, it’s pure bliss. The cocktail room is catching on by first building a strong post-work happy hour crowd as well as a late night ‘un-scene’ for those who want to relax in a warm environment with good company and great drinks. The Cocktail Room’s first promotion gets started this week with LoPro, a local professional’s mixer that will take place every Thursday from 4-7P and where guests can mingle with all the people that are making Downtown Las Vegas happen For more information, please call (702) 880-DOWN. MIKE WEATHERFORD: Flamingo adding Vannelli to lineup.
Anyone who knows Harrah's executive Don Marrandino will tell you he prefers Bruce Springsteen to jazzy crooners. But he also knows an undervalued property when he sees one.
When Gino Vannelli played the Suncoast in March, Marrandino checked out one of the sold-out performances. He was impressed enough to offer the 54-year-old singer 12 shows over three engagements at the Flamingo, starting May 23.
The showroom is anchored by Toni Braxton, another "find" in terms of a singer with a high recognition level who hasn't oversaturated the local market. However, Braxton's voice hasn't sounded as sterling in the dry desert air as it does on her '90s hits. Adding Vannelli to the rotation will allow her to work three weeks followed by a week off, instead of four weeks before a break.

BETTE-ING THE HOUSE
Bette Midler said she scouted the cavernous Colosseum, taking in numerous shows, before deciding to sign a deal with Caesars Palace.
She had some concerns about the "vastness of the stage," she said Thursday at a news conference.
One of the changes to the stage will be a return to the flat floor, after it was sloped for Celine Dion's "A New Day."
She will open Feb. 20.

SHOW REVIEW: Bobby Slayton
Perfect Fit: Bobby Slayton's sex-and-porn comedy is right at home at Hooters Hotel. By MIKE WEATHERFORD/Las Vegas REVIEW-JOURNAL.
Slayton is Hooters' entry into ticketed entertainment. The young casino remodeled a former martini bar and signed him up without asking him to "four-wall," or work for ticket revenue with no financial guarantee, as most Las Vegas comedians with ongoing shows do.
It came at a good time. "My year was looking kind of bleak," he says. After years at the top of the club circuit — but never getting the sitcom or HBO special that would enable the leap to theaters or showrooms — club managers were starting to say, "Why pay Bobby Slayton when we can get a guy for half?"

John Katsilometes talks with Bette Midler, who already feels at home at Caesars Palace
This is not Bette Midler's first trip on the Strip. Not by a long shot. Her first visit to Las Vegas was actually her first appearance at a Strip showroom, when she opened for Johnny Carson at the Sahara in 1972.
"I was so young, but I remember it well," she said following a spectacle on the steps of the Colosseum at Caesars Palace that was a splashy mix of production show (with six dancers dressed as bellmen who toted Louis Vuitton luggage onto the stage) and news conference played out for media members and dozens of star-struck onlookers. The idea was to announce Midler's two-year engagement as Colosseum headliner, stepping in when Celine Dion leaves. Midler begins her run Feb. 20.
Midler was in her mid-20s when she opened for Carson, whom she serenaded into retirement in 1992. "He was there a few times a year for them, and one of those times I was there, and I remember the big showroom and being part of a big show with a real star. It was great."
Midler also fell victim to a vintage wardrobe malfunction on opening night. "My opening night, I had to bail my dresser out of jail. It's just such a long story," Midler said, laughing. "That was my introduction to Las Vegas. She didn't bring me anything but one string of beads to wear. I had to improvise."

Harrah's New Mega Beat Jackpot
Harrah's Las Vegas has just launched a multi-property poker progressive Mega Beat Jackpot, giving poker enthusiasts the chance to earn $50,000 or more playing Texas Hold'em at any one of six participating Harrah's casinos during the promotion. Starting today, poker rooms at Harrah's, Flamingo, O'Sheas, Bally's, Paris and Harrah's Laughlin are introducing this jackpot promotion that makes designated losing hands a winner.
The new Mega Beat Jackpot starts at $50,000 and increases daily the more the game is played without a winner. The initial qualifying hand to win is when four 10s or higher is beaten by a higher four-of-a-kind or better. Each week the Mega Beat Jackpot isn't won, the qualifying hand will drop numerically until the Mega Beat Jackpot is won. Once the jackpot's claimed, the prize will reset at $50,000 and the qualifying hand will return to four 10s.

MGM Mirage Moves North By Rick Garman
You’d think spending more than $7 billion to build a huge complex of hotels, condos, casinos, and more on The Strip would be enough for MGM Mirage, but apparently not. The company recently announced that it was spending $575 million to acquire a series of parcels at the far north end of The Strip that includes the vacant plot of land across from The Sahara and the land that was supposedly going to be the site of a proposed Maxim hotel and casino. The land adjoins the acreage that is home to their Circus-Circus property and gives them about 100 acres total to play with for future development.
If you’re trying to envision where this is, just north of Circus-Circus is a small Travelodge motel – that is not included in this land deal, but just past that is a gas station that will go bye-bye and then all the land behind and to the north of the Sky condominium tower and the Hilton time-shares up to Sahara Avenue.
So what do they plan on doing with all that land? Build another massive complex of hotels and casinos eventually, of course.
It’s way too early for anyone to be getting specific but considering the fact that CityCenter, the aforementioned $7.4 billion project underway between Monte Carlo and Bellagio, is on 66 acres, the 100 acres of dirt they have here could see something even bigger and more expensive. Expect at least one new large hotel-casino plus a series of smaller boutique hotels, residential developments, and more.
The MGM Mirage folks did say that whatever the development wound up being it would include a major refurbishment of the aging Circus-Circus property that would probably involve them getting rid of the low-rise motel buildings out back and the RV park.
The major difference between this project and CityCenter is that they will seek partners to help develop the land instead of paying for the whole thing themselves.
There is no schedule for when this development will begin but a company spokesperson said it was possible that you could see construction there before CityCenter is done in 2009.
What this means, if all goes as intended, is that the next decade will shine brightly for the northern end of The Strip, now mostly dotted with aging dinosaurs like The Riviera, The Frontier, and Circus-Circus.
In addition to whatever MGM Mirage is planning to do, there are several major projects in the works in that neighborhood including Encore, the new sister hotel to Wynn Las Vegas due to open in 2008 or 2009; Echelon Place, the $4 billion complex of more than 5,000 hotel rooms and a casino that will replace the recently imploded Stardust; the Trump International Towers, the first of which should open next year; a major overhaul of The Sahara by its new owners, probably starting soon and complete by 2009 at the latest; and Fontainebleau, a $2.8 billion, nearly 4,000 room hotel and casino that has been planned for awhile now but recently got some new heavy hitting investors and may break ground later this year.

Las Vegas Q and A by Rick Garman
Question: I used to really like going Downtown but stopped a few years back because things had gotten kind of seedy. Is there any good reason for me to go back?
Answer: Downtown Las Vegas has been suffering for years and the hits keep on coming.
One of the biggest hotels in the area, The Lady Luck, closed in 2006 in anticipation of a major refurbishment and expansion that, so far, hasn’t happened. It still remains a shuttered shell, although the people in charge of the project swear that within the next couple of months everything will start up again. They even managed to convince the city extend an exclusive negotiating window that would allow them to purchase land just north of the hotel for possible expansion.
Meanwhile the other high-profile failure, Neonopolis, got yet another setback recently. The mostly vacant shopping mall/entertainment complex that anchors The Fremont Street Experience, has been on the block for awhile now looking for a new corporate owner to infuse some much needed love into the place. Hopes had been high for one major shopping center company but they recently said they weren’t interested and now things are back to square one. As of this writing the only tenants in the building are Jillian’s restaurant and bowling alley, a movie theater, and a jewelry store.
But there are some bright spots that may make a trip to Downtown worth your while.
The recent renovation of The Golden Nugget has turned that property into one that can compete on many levels with the grand palaces on The Strip. El Cortez and The Four Queens have also gotten top to bottom overhauls that definitely moves their properties up a few rungs on the hotel food chain.
Plus there are several new bars and entertainment facilities open downtown on Fremont Street both under the canopy and just to the east. Work is underway on transforming the street between the Experience and The El Cortez from a grimy and sometimes scary few blocks of tacky shops into a bustling honky-tonk district and there are several already existing bars and restaurants in the area worth visiting including the fantastic Triple George Grill and the raucously fun Hogs & Heifers Saloon.
Plus, you can stay Downtown for a fraction of what you’d pay on The Strip so you can always justify the visit that way!
Vegas4Visitors Weekly Column by Rick Garman
John Katsilometes on the fame sure to be bestowed on Dino's Lounge now that it is featured in a movie.
From The Las Vegas Sun
This is the line of dialogue from the upcoming movie "Lucky You" that Kristin Bartolo hopes survived the final edit:
Billie Offer (played by Drew Barrymore): "I got the job! I got the job, at Dino's! Do you know where that is?"
Huck Cheever (played by Eric Bana): "Everybody knows where it is."
You can't buy such exposure and Bartolo paid nothing. Rather, the owner of Dino's Lounge, the long-standing self-proclaimed "Last Neighborhood Bar" across from Olympic Garden on Las Vegas Boulevard South made quite a sum a couple of years ago when the production crew for "Lucky You," which opens this weekend, took over the place for a week-and-a-half of filming in the tavern's parking lot.
The story centers on a star-crossed poker player trying to win a tournament in Las Vegas while he wrestles with personal problems. Among the locations used in the film are Binion's and the Silverton, and Dino's figures prominently in the movie as well as the film's trailers, in which the familiar neon green "Dino's" sign proudly glows. The crew performed a makeover on the tavern's exterior, repainting its walls and the trademark "Last Neighborhood Bar" sign, and also (regrettably) took down the "Drunk of the Month" promotional visage. But no filming was attempted inside the bar, which has occupied the same spot on the boulevard since 1962 and, in some spots, does show the nicks and scars of time.
"What they did was build Dino's in L.A., on a soundstage, to make it look like the inside of the bar," Bartolo said Monday morning. "They just shot the characters coming in and going out." The bar was closed for nine days when filming was being conducted, and the only two customers Bartolo served during that time were Barrymore and Bana.
"They were very, very nice," she said. "She is so tiny. But everyone was so nice and no expense was spared. We're talking Warner Bros. money, and money was no object from the moment they stepped on the premises. They fixed light bulbs in the signs, repainted … They paid what I would make in a day, plus a daily rate for the trouble."
And they did not change the name of the club.
"That was the coolest thing," Bartolo said. "We will be famous."

Timeless Allen puts on a show for the ages.
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
At $29.95, the Gold Coast is practically giving away tickets to one of the best shows in Las Vegas.
If you aren't already a fan of Marty Allen and his dynamic wife - vocalist/pianist/straight man Karon Kate Blackwell - you will be by the time you leave the showroom.
The couple recently began an open-ended engagement at the Gold Coast.
This is a powerful one-two punch: Allen the tireless comedian who recently celebrated his 85th birthday, and Blackwell, a spirited singer and piano player who takes charge of the stage the moment she walks into the spotlight wearing one of her slinky gowns.

Penn & Teller are a class act.
By Alan Katz/Las Vegas Magazine
Of the many fascinating magic tricks that Penn & Teller perform, the
neatest is how they can repeatedly say things that the mainstream considers heretical and yet remain the most popular magic team in the United States.
For example, rather than pay lip service to religion like performers are supposed to do, Penn goes on the radio to explain how disbelieving in God has made him more thoughtful and decent. Nor do they pander to facile patriotism. One of the mainstays of their act is to wrap an American flag with a copy of the Bill of Rights and set the flag on fire while somehow the document stays untouched. Even though the flag appears at the end fully restored, the point is not lost on the audience. It’s this kind of thing that distinguishes them.
Both Penn, the 6-foot-6-inch talkative guy, and Teller, the diminutive silent fellow, are Libertarians and free-speech advocates. They’re also devout skeptics. On Bullshit!, their television show on Showtime, their shtick is to present a popularly held belief—such as “true love is everlasting” or “passive smoke is harmful”—and debunk it. The show also exposes con artists, psychics, frauds, cheats and purveyors of illogic, which lots of people love until one of their heroes or dearly held values comes under attack.
It’s this uncompromising honesty of Penn & Teller and their insistence on challenging the audience that endears them to their fans.
Let’s also not forget that they’re funny. Yes, many of their tricks can be edgy—like firing bullets into each other’s mouths. But who doesn’t thrill to the sight of a little make-believe mayhem and attempted murder? True to their heretical selves, after performing an illusion, they often show the audience how it’s done.
When they’re not onstage at the Rio, Penn works with a group that investigates claims of the paranormal. He produced and both men appeared in the film The Aristocrats, which, in terms of language, is one of the dirtiest movies of all time. The team has written several books. In short, they’re two of the brightest, most interesting people in show business.
