NORM: 'The Producers' pursuing Danza

Producer Mel Brooks has confirmed he's in talks with Tony Danza to bring him to the Las Vegas version of "The Producers."

"We're working on him," Brooks told Steve Friess of thestrippodcast.com.

Danza, who recently played Max Bialystock in "The Producers" on Broadway, would take over for Brad Oscar, Brooks indicated.

"Brad would be leaving. Tony would take over, and Tony would set the town on its ear," said Brooks. "He's a Vegas guy. He could've been a Vegas singer and dancer. He could've been a Vegas prize fighter. He could've been a Vegas emcee. He could've been part of the Rat Pack. He just belongs in Las Vegas.

"If we can get Tony Danza to do it, I think it would literally be fabulous."

Even with Danza's name appeal, Brooks didn't sound optimistic that the show was going to last more than a year at Paris Las Vegas, where it opened in January.

"I think it'll run through the year. I think it'll stay until January 1."

And if Danza leaves, "we'd have to get a new star and maybe go on into '08."

The New Jersey mob boss needed a getaway and hopped on a private plane for some rest and relaxation in Sin City. The only restaurant featured in the program was the acclaimed Restaurant Guy Savoy, where Tony dined solo, no doubt enjoying the stellar French fare. "We were only on screen for a few seconds," said Savoy general manager and namesake, Franck Savoy, "but if you've been in the restaurant you would have known it was us."

MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Caveman' takes crack at battle of sexes.
From The Las Vegas Review Journal

Kevin Burke performs a one-man theater piece. It's about fatherhood, his life as a former circus clown and stand-up comedian, and his affinity for his great-grandmother, who was a fraudulent spiritualist medium.

But that's not the show he's doing here.

"Defending the Caveman" is a little easier to get your arms around. The Golden Nugget's new resident production is an anthropological take on the battle of the sexes that became a Broadway hit in the 1990s.

Old hand steps into Hasselhoff's high heels
'Producers' less distracting with a Broadway veteran.
By Jerry Fink Las Vegas Sun

Some of the audience left with David Hasselhoff when he left the Las Vegas cast of "The Producers."

But the musical lost none of its pizzazz when Broadway veteran Lee Roy Reams took over as flamboyant director Roger DeBris.

Nothing official about the numbers, but one observer said attendance was "way down" immediately after Hasselhoff's departure May 6. But the room was back up to three-quarters full at a recent performance.

Word is getting out that the show, even without Hasselhoff's star power, is worth seeing.

Reviewing art history.
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal

If you're coming to town over the next few months, or if you live here, you won't want to miss an exhibit by one of the great artists of our time who will be honored with a 50-year retrospective exhibition of his work. His name is LeRoy Neiman, the place is the Centaur Art Galleries in the Fashion Show Mall, and the exhibit, featuring his art from 1957 to 2007, will be on display through August 26.

Neiman, 79, considered to be one of the most popular American artists of the 20th century, has produced a large body of work during his career. He also has spent a lot of time in Las Vegas and has been inspired by the city's leisure activities, so it's only fitting that this retrospective is presented here.

I first met Neiman some 25 years ago. He was here to watch one of the championship fight (I forget which one) at Caesars Palace and was also going to do a painting for Playboy magazine of a new tattoo that Cher had done on her body. The entertainer was performing at Caesars, so it all fit nicely into Neiman's plans, and mine as well, as I was going to be interviewing Cher and it gave me one more question to ask her.

Neiman and I hung out at the beautiful Caesars pool for a few hours, talking about art, mutual friends and making comments about the people who walked by. A regular guy, who paints works of art that we can all relate to — especially men.

More than 450 works of art — from charcoal drawings to paintings — will be on display at the gallery, including 100 originals.

The core of the exhibit is a collection of 26 paintings commissioned by an anonymous individual during the past 30 years, and appraised at more than $5 million. The collection consists of paintings of sports figures who represent the ideal athlete, such as Mary Lou Retton, Jackie Robinson and Peyton Manning.

Though he has painted a variety of subjects, including animals, famous locations and man's leisure life, Neiman probably is most known for his sports-themed works. "He's a guy artist," says S2 Art gallery founder and owner Jack Solomon, Neiman's longtime friend and former publisher. "Most of LeRoy's stuff is male-oriented, sports, the good life from a male point of view. He's sort of a man's man."

Neiman was teaching art at the Chicago Institute of Art when Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner offered him a job as the magazine's artist in 1953. For 15 years, Neiman traveled the world and captured major events on canvas for his Playboy feature called "Man of Leisure." You don't want to miss this exhibit when you're in town, so put it on your calendar.

From "The Vegas Eye"

Beacher’s Back.

Not only did the Memorial Day long weekend prove to be record setting for many of the city’s nightclubs and restaurants, but it was also a homecoming of sorts for Rolling Stone Magazine’s ‘Best Showmen on the Strip’ Jeffrey Beacher, who used the weekend for a special unveiling of the all-new Beacher’s Madhouse adult variety show at the Hard Rock Hotel’s The Joint. Working around the clock in preparation, Beacher unveiled a new format for the now monthly show that kept the action coming fast and furious with each act striving to outperform the one before it. Several popular elements, like the karaoke contest and the rambunctious African dance troupe, remain from the former weekly format, but Beacher has once again succeeded in finding a whole new collection of freaky talent to entertain the masses. Madhouse co-host and emcee, Pete Giovine, was brilliant as usual helping to direct the mayhem and keep the show on its tracks as it traveled from a Fake Orgasm Contest to the ‘Midget Ultimate Fighting Federation’ (affectionately referred to as M.U.F.F.) to a dance troupe of oversized big booty go-go dancers to ultra-talented headlining Grammy winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari who brought down the house. “I thought it was a great start to the all-new Beacher’s Madhouse,” Beacher told the Eye, “We worked really hard to find some new talent for the audience and they really loved it. It was the perfect preview for the true grand opening of Beacher’s Madhouse which will take place on Saturday, June 30th.” Beacher wasn’t the only one impressed; “Beach has even topped himself with this Madhouse,” added Michael Politz, who was in attendance with friends Dennis Haskins a.k.a. Mr. Belding and Motley Crue rocker Vince Neil, “I haven’t seen the Hard Rock so busy in the last year. The impact that show has on the casino is obviously apparent.”

The return of Beacher’s Madhouse is really interesting for several reasons; not only is it a show that has had phenomenal celebrity attendance and turn-out in the past, but in a city that has turned its back on Tony winning Broadway hits like Hairspray (Luxor) and Avenue Q (Wynn Las Vegas), it shows the difficulties a smaller production like the Madhouse can face. While big budget Cirque-level shows have little issues finding success, Beacher has overcome tremendous adversity with a shameless, and successful, commitment to landing in the press repeatedly and guerilla-style marketing that even had vertically challenged Wee Matt hitting the Strip and swimming pools for potential audience members. Never the less, a new season and new format of Beacher’s Madhouse is upon us and one thing’s for sure, there is nothing else like it in Las Vegas.

SHOW REVIEW: "MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris"

Revealing Tradition: 'Crazy Horse Paris' revue clings to authenticity of its French format. By MIKE WEATHERFORD REVIEW-JOURNAL

OK, I think we have arrived at some rules on when it's acceptable to lip-sync in a Las Vegas show.

1. When the song is in French.

2. When the lip-syncer is wearing only black mesh undies and writhing on a sofa shaped like a giant pair of lips.

The other Las Vegas girlie shows — and even Britney or other tabloid pop tarts — likely would be up for the second challenge. But only the ladies of "MGM Grand's Crazy Horse Paris" dare to mouth the number "Lecon D'Erotisme."

Flamingo stands tall
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

What a terrific and varied lineup of entertainment at the Flamingo - R&B artist Toni Braxton at her sexiest in the evenings, funnyman George Wallace and the richly talented Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha in the afternoons.

In the smaller showroom, the classic Chicago improv group Second City fills the early slot and is still going strong with its troupe of young artists who manage to pull humor out of thin air. The erotic "X Burlesque" holds down late nights, and its latest incarnation may be the hottest yet. Husband and wife producers Matt and Angela Stabile hired Colombia native J.J. Villar to redo the choreography, and he has created an edgy atmosphere that smolders with sexuality.

Drop pop singer Gino Vannelli into the middle of this entertainment buffet. He performed recently in the main showroom and is scheduled to return. Vannelli sells his jazzy tunes to his fans with ease and fills the room with charisma.

Viva Venetian
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

It's the Three Bs at the Venetian - Brady, as in comedian Wayne; Brown, as in impressionist Gordie; and Blue Man Group.

Add the popular "Phantom, the Las Vegas Spectacular" and you've got another powerful entertainment lineup.

Brady has audiences eating out of his hand. He is brilliant at what he does and during the past few weeks he and co-star Jonathan Mangum have made a fast-paced, energetic show even faster and more energetic - tightening up some of the spots that seemed to drag in earlier performances.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Brady stick around even longer than his latest extension, which is through July 1.

Brown, too, is a talented guy who worked his way up from downtown to the Strip. He's as good at the comedy as he is with the impressions. Definitely worth adding to your list of things to do.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
June 2007

Normally temperatures never reach 100 degrees until the month of June…and in classically typical Las Vegas style, on June 1st temperatures reached 100 degrees for the first time this year…and yes, it is true, it is a dry heat; and yes, that does make it more tolerable.  While many parts of the country have humidity levels in the 70, 80, and 90 percent range; Las Vegas usually has a percentage around 7.  This is good and bad—it is standing in a convection oven, rather than a sauna.  Without lotion, the dry air will suck out any moisture that you may have in your body, and you will burn faster here than a day at the beach.  Summer in Vegas is hot…pools and parties are the main tour de force for the season, and the entertainment usually brings a lot of wonderful surprises throughout the few months ahead.  Schools are out all over the country.  College-aged persons will come to Vegas and try to emulate the commercials and the mystique of this town—usually without the success and panache for which they would hope.  Sometimes these folks think that normal rules of society don't apply to this town…trust me though; drunk and disorderly and drunk driving will still get you thrown in jail.  Families will come in, have a good time, but find that there is less and less that the entire family can do on the Strip. (Actually, there are a lot of things that the family can do, but most tourists don't venture away from the casinos to find them.)

Las Vegas is my home.  It is known as a party town, as Sin City, as the Mecca of gambling, as the Entertainment Capital of the World, as the oasis in the desert…but as a whole, it is a town like any other.  The rest of it is good PR that gets you to come here and spend tourist dollars.  People don't seem to understand that.  I have been asked in which hotel I live (as if houses were not a part of the overall landscape of the city.)  I am often questioned how I could possibly raise a daughter here.  I have been asked if drinking and gambling are a part of my daily life.

The corridor of gambling is centered on the Strip, and the Strip (while formidable) is only a small part of a much bigger city.  Like most people, I live in a house in a real neighborhood, and this is a great place to be raising my daughter because she has more opportunities to see art, artist, theatre, and entertainment here, than almost anywhere else on the planet, and no, I'm not a gambler.

But I digress…

Entertainment abounds in Las Vegas, and June is a busy month…

KVBC News 3 anchor Nina Radetich, Star 102.7, and The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort have joined together to present the 4th annual Nina's Night Out on Thursday, June 7, 2007. The annual fundraiser for the Rape Crisis Center will feature multi-platinum singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne, performing tracks off of her new album, The Best Damn Thing. Avril will perform at The Pearl, the new concert theater at the Palms. Ticket prices range from $50 - $115. To date, Nina's Night Out has raised over $250,000 for the Rape Crisis Center.

Legendary entertainer Clint Holmes, a favorite on the Las Vegas stage, previews his autobiographical musical "Just Another Man" beginning June 1, exclusively for Las Vegas audiences, inside the Judy Bayley Theatre at UNLV. The show, a look at the life and career of an extraordinary talent, will eventually travel to London, before hopefully premiering on Broadway. "Just Another Man" is based on the true story of Holmes' parents -his father an African-American jazz musician and his mother, a classically trained opera singer from Great Britain. It begins in 1944 and covers six decades. "Just Another Man," is presented by the Nevada Conservatory Theatre.  The show plays through most of the month.

"Simply Ballroom" has closed at the Golden Nugget.  This misplaced show fulfilled its six-month contract, and now it is gone…and the following day, "Defending the Caveman" has opened.  The one-day turn around was easily accomplished for this one-man show that defends the men in the world of relationships.  There are a lot of empowering stories for women, but very few for men…an no, we are not perfect (and we don't really even try to be,) but we are mostly lovable…and this play take a look at the lighter side of relationships from the male point of view.  It has had a lot of success across the country, and we send out our best wishes for its success here.

Matsuri is starting its run at the Sahara.

Hans Klok (with Pam Anderson) has begun its run at Planet Hollywood.

CineVegas will be holding its annual film festival at the Palms again this year from the 6th to the 16th.  This even has grown every year, and draws some of the top names in the entertainment industry to Vegas.  It has become one of the major "Hollywood" events here in Las Vegas.

The Greatest show on Earth is once again in town, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus will be at the Orleans Hotel from the 21st to the 24th.  It is a great event for everyone.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values June 2007 From The Las Vegas Advisor.

1. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 Hours - $4.95
The best dining bargain in Las Vegas is the 10-ounce filet-cut steak dinner at Ellis Island, the casino at the Super 8 Motel on Koval near E. Flamingo. It’s served with salad, vegetable, potato, garlic bread, and rolls for $4.95, 24 hours a day. But it’s not on the menu; you have to ask specifically for it.

2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-3 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.

3. Prime Rib Dinner - California - 4-11 pm daily - $6.99
The $6.99 prime rib special at the California downtown starts with a full salad bar, continues with a big cooked-to-order piece of prime beef, plus potato and veggie, and finishes up with a little cherries jubilee for dessert. The same meal would cost at least triple in any other city in the country.

4. Beer - Casino Royale - Daily - $1
We’ve replaced the $1.25 beers at Slots A Fun with $1 Michelobs at the center-Strip Casino Royale. This is a 24/7 deal and the bar staff is ultra pleasant about doling ’em out (it’s not uncommon to encounter a staff that’s resentful of this type of deal). You can also get two flavors of frozen margaritas for a buck apiece. Bottom line, though: Beers for $1 are better than beers for $1.25.

5. The Comedy Stop - Tropicana - Daily - $19.95
The Comedy Stop at the Tropicana moves up a couple notches this month, based on a recent visit that proved it an even better value than we thought.

6. Sign-Up Promotion - Stratosphere - Daily - coin-in
Stratosphere stays in the Top Ten with its solid gambling-based new-member players club sign-up promotion. Play quarter slots or video poker for a few hours and get a value-escalating (and cumulative) assortment of goodies, including $100 in bounce-back cash.

7. Buffet - Planet Hollywood - Daily - $13.99-$24.99
The Spice Market Buffet is back where it belongs (after a stint in a ballroom during the changeover from Aladdin to Planet Hollywood), so we’ve also put it back where it was in the Top Ten. Though we only tried the weekend brunch, we were impressed enough to replace the Mirage. The prices are still below most other gourmet spreads (Bellagio, Wynn, Paris), so for now, it’s our prime buffet pick.

8. Lunch Special - Diamond China - 11:30 am-3 pm - $3.95
The $3.95 lunch special at Diamond China stays in the Top Ten again this month. It’s still going strong, with a big daily window of 11:30 am to 3 pm to get it. The word’s out on this secret, though. In naming Diamond China the best Chinese restaurant in its big “Best of Las Vegas” survey, the Las Vegas Review-Journal cited this special specifically. Diamond China is located at 3909 W. Sahara.

9. Hot Dog - Suncoast - 11 am-5 pm - 75¢
The 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at Suncoast replaces the 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at South Point. They’re the same price. They’re available the same hours. And they come with the same kraut and onions at no extra charge. So why Suncoast and not South Point? Because following another time-honored Top Ten tradition, ties go to the coupon. What that means is that Suncoast participates in the LVA coupon program while South Point doesn’t. So by going to Suncoast you get the added benefit of being able to play your $5 matchplay from the POV while there. It’s a good and fair tie-breaker that also serves to support those who support us.

10. Steak Dinner - Gold Coast - 24 hours - $10.95
We’re also replacing the steak specials at Silverton with the venerable complete steak dinner at the Gold Coast. After revisiting the meal, we decided that this 24-hour 16-ounce T-bone, which comes with five sides and a glass of beer, is just too good not to be included. However, the $4.99 steak-and-eggs special at Silverton remains worthy, especially since there’s no other breakfast deal in the Top Ten.

Anthony Cools' naughty brand of hypnosis.
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine

Thirteen years and more than 10,000 satisfying handshakes later, Anthony Cools’ career seems to be reaching a fitting climax. Cools is Las Vegas’ unofficial social chair, a comic-hypnotist who revels in the obscene antics of his subjects. He’s the closest any Strip headliner comes to a true blue frat boy—and an ultimately endearing one at that. When he raises his glass and shouts “Sociable!”, you are expected to take a swig from the nearest available booze. Sans alcohol? Scream real loud like he’s just said today’s secret word.Six nights a week, his showroom at Paris transforms into one of the wildest, raunchiest venues in town. Whether or not Cools’ show fits your mood or taste depends on a number of factors: Have you had anything to drink? Can you be quiet for five minutes while he induces his subjects? Would you like to see willing volunteers audition for a porno by making love to the best-looking person they’ve ever seen in their lives—a chair? If you answered yes to any of the above, Cools is your man. Don’t disappoint him.A good indication of how quickly Cools’ show deviates from everything else you’ve seen on the Strip occurs when he makes a woman believe her nether region talks out loud whenever anyone says her name. The ensuing calamity is priceless, yet Cools is just getting started.“I wanna get dirty now,” he says afterward. “Is that OK with you people?”Uh-oh.What unfolds next is the infamous porn audition, where an unsuspecting chair becomes the object of affection for the men and women onstage. It’s interesting to see just how the volunteers decide to interact with the chair. Some go to town, others are more reserved, while still others practice moves that question whether the chair isn’t a step up for them.Later, Cools convinces the women onstage that bras are meant to be seen, so after a brief sojourn backstage, the girls return with bras on the outside of their clothing, looking perfectly content. In the meantime, two guys are made to believe they are gay lovers and Cools arranges a free wedding—only to awaken them mid-embrace.Ever the gentleman, Cools thanks his subjects at show’s end with a customary handshake. Yet it is no ordinary handshake—it produces the most earth-shattering orgasm ever. And, somehow, it never gets old, as the eight men and women onstage writhe around on a chair, oohing, ahhing, holding onto Cools’ hand for dear life and making faces that should only be seen by someone they know and trust.Yet who better than Cools, the devilish ringmaster, to share such a moment with? It’s his job to get to know you better. It’s his audience’s job to take it all in with unabated excitement.

Exhibit rounds up relics from fated ship
By Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine.

Imagine yourself on the deck of an immense cruise ship on a chilly April night on the North Atlantic. Walk along the wooden floor and feel the chill against your face. For a moment you feel the confidence inspired by the day’s latest technology and the triumph of conquering nature.

“King of the world!” No. “Iceberg right ahead!” You’re on the Titanic and you learn about the horror and the heroism of that night in 1912 at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.

Not since the meticulous re-creation (but overwrought romance) of Titanic can you see and feel what it was like.

Dozens of artifacts brought up from the deep are preserved and under glass. See plateware, letters, postcards, currency, jewelry, floor tiles, sinks, window frames and tools from the era. Photos on the walls and quotes from the survivors form a haunting timeline.

Replicas of the Grand Staircase, first- and third-class rooms and even a hands-on iceberg complete the experience.

All who pass through the exhibit are given a boarding pass with the name of a passenger. At the end, gaze upon the memorial wall to see if your passenger was one of the 705 survivors or the 1,523 who perished.

Before Dec. 7, 1941, before Nov. 22, 1963, before Sept. 11, 2001, there was April 14-15, 1912—another event that firmly divided what came before from what came after.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition
Where: Tropicana
When: Open 10 a.m. - 10 p.m.
Cost: $20, plus tax and fee (adults); $18 (seniors); $13 (children)
Info: (702) 739-2411.

Binion’s In Trouble? Again?
By Rick Garman/Vegas4Visitors.com

The Downtown casino market has taken its share of hits in the last few years, struggling to find a footing with visitors and locals while the money and the traffic on The Strip and elsewhere continues to boom. Topping the list of those troubles has been the behind-the-scenes drama at historic Binion’s. The hotel and casino, formerly known as Binion’s Horseshoe, closed due to money trouble in 2004 after more than 50 years as a Glitter Gulch legend. Gaming giants Harrah’s swept in a bought the place but only to secure the rights to the Horseshoe brand and get the World Series of Poker, which had been hosted by the hotel for years. Harrah’s quickly sold the place to MTR Gaming and they reopened the property, dumped some money into it to spruce it up, and tried to make a go of things.

But recent reports in local papers indicate the casino is losing money quickly – more than $5 million in 2006, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal. Now, you may be saying, “eh – $5 million is chump change for Vegas, so what’s the big deal?” True on The Strip where things are counted in billions, not millions but consider the fact that MTR only paid $20 million to buy the place and you start to see why $5 million is very big deal.

Rumors are swirling that the company may try to sell the hotel, but the big question on everyone’s mind is – who would want to buy it?

Las Vegas Q and A by Rick Garman

Question: I heard a new rental car facility opened in Las Vegas. How does that change the way people rent cars?

Answer: Yes, it did just open last week, Jack. And now renting a car just got a lot easier – or more complicated depending on how you want to look at it.

Previously, most of the car rental agencies operated counters inside the terminal and their own buses to lots that were within the airport property. So, renting from Avis? Go to the Avis counter by baggage claim, go outside and look for the Avis bus, and go to a nearby lot for your vehicle.

Now, a new $170 million consolidated facility is open south of the airport and the method by which you rent a car is drastically different.

The counters inside the terminal are gone and now instead of individual company buses, there is one bus for all of the car companies. Well, there are lots of buses, but they are all marked “McCarran Rent-A-Car Center” instead of branded with the corporate logos. Buses leave the main terminals roughly every five minutes so waiting won’t be a problem.

Hop on the bus and it’ll take you off of airport property to the new facility on Gilespie Street, near the intersection of Warm Sands and Las Vegas Boulevard South, which for the familiar is where the Las Vegas Outlet Mall is located.

The new facility has counters for Avis, Advantage, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Dollar, Alamo, National, Payless, Savmor, and Thrifty car rental agencies and most of the vehicles will be housed in multi-story parking garages, thereby making the prospect of hopping in that Ford Taurus a little less intimidating than it was when it was sitting in the middle of a hot July parking lot.

For more information on the new system, visit McCarran.com and click on the Ground Transportation link.

Question: I’ve been hearing rumors that several Strip hotels are opening new pool areas or remodeling their existing ones. What have you heard?

Answer: There are at least three new pool areas coming to the Strip this summer, although all of them will be adjuncts of existing pools and none of them will be places you can take little Billy to do belly-flops.

Bare at The Mirage is the new European style beach club that will open in the next few weeks. It will feature topless sunbathing during the day and then be converted into an open-air nightclub once the sun goes down. The whole thing is being managed by the Light Group who does the very successful Light and Jet nightclubs plus restaurants like Fix and Stack.

Tao Beach is the moniker given to a similarly styled club opening in May at The Venetian as an extension of the very popular nightclub at the hotel. The 18,000-square foot pool and club area will feature luxury cabanas, day beds, a 30-foot bar, and plenty of sun and topless fun during the day, then will change over into a nightclub complete with a “floating” dance floor and fourteen-foot fire columns.

And over at Mandalay Bay, they are doing a major overhaul of their pool area. The existing wave pool, lazy river ride, and one of the main pools has already gotten a facelift and is open for business while construction continues into June on the remaining portions of the area. Expected in the revamped version will be an updated and expanded Moorea Beach Club (their version of the topless pool/nightclub concept), a revamped and expanded entrance, new cabanas, a store, a casino, and poolside villas for those with a lot of disposable income.

JOSH GROBAN CONCERT: Big talent, high sap content.
By Jason Bracelin/Las vegas review Journal

A Josh Groban gig is the musical equivalent of shopping at Costco. Everything comes in these huge, economy-sized packages: He's got that gigantic, triple-helping voice blanketed in an all-you-can-eat buffet of instrumentation provided by close to 30 backing musicians.

Oh, and don't forget the 12-pack of schmaltz, more syrupy than a case of Nyquil.

An evening spent in Groban's presence is an exhausting one, his repertoire overstuffed with one crescendo after another, lots of loud, crashing cymbals, preening strings and so much melodrama that it feels like being trapped in an orchestral soap opera.

NORM: He just keeps trumping himself

Donald Trump is jumping into the superheated Las Vegas restaurant scene.

Trump announced plans Sunday to add a $2.5 billion sister tower that will have an ultra-gourmet restaurant named DJT, his initials.

The first fine-dining restaurant named after Trump will have an award-winning chef, according to Trump associate Jack Wishna.

Trump announced his new 64-story tower during Sunday's episode of "The Apprentice," his hit NBC series.

Trump Las Vegas Tower II will stand northeast of the existing tower.

The towers are a joint venture between Trump and Phil Ruffin, owner of the New Frontier hotel and casino.

NORM: Holmes more than 'Just Another Man'

Three years in the making, Clint Holmes' next career move launches June 7, opening night of his autobiographical musical at UNLV's Judy Bayley Theatre.

Set in Las Vegas and hopefully bound for Broadway, "Just Another Man" will run until June 24. Tickets go on sale Monday.

Holmes, who ended a six-year resident headliner run at Harrah's in September, has been working with acclaimed acting coach Larry Moss, whose Oscar-winning pupils include Leonardo DiCaprio, Hilary Swank and Helen Hunt.

When Moss and Holmes met on Oct. 3, 2004, Holmes had other things on his mind.

"Tom Quinn, the lead producer, brought Larry to see me. It was the same night Roy Horn had his accident," Holmes said.

Moss, who signed on to coach Holmes, has a passion for musicals dating back to his first visit to Las Vegas, at age 12, when he saw Nat King Cole perform.

Holmes and his longtime musical director, Bill Fayne, have written 24 new songs for the play.

The entire play takes place as he's having surgery, and it opens with Holmes' character, an entertainer, singing, "If Not Now, When?" Holmes wrote the song shortly after he underwent colon cancer surgery about 2 1/2 years ago.

As the son of a black jazz singer and a British opera performer, Holmes relives through the play the biracial issues he faced, but the story also applies to "anybody who has to figure who they are in a world that tries to tell them who they are."

REVIEW: 'SPAMALOT'
Clever, fast-paced farce gives fans plenty to laugh about
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun

They cram a lot into "Spamalot," mostly base humor that probably has Noel Coward spinning in his grave singing, "I'm Not Dead Yet."

So much for the droll, sophisticated British comedy of years past.

But the world has sped up. No time for comedic setups. People want to get to the punch line quickly and get on with their lives.

"Spamalot" delivers that in spades - also hearts, clubs and diamonds. It's a full deck of humor, touching on many types of comedy as it races through 90 nonstop minutes.

Most fans will find more than enough to laugh at in Eric Idle's musical (with music by Idle and John Du Prez and direction by Mike Nichols).
