Musical 'Jersey Boys' coming to Palazzo.

Tony winner to open early next year in resort under construction next to Venetian. By MIKE WEATHERFORD/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

"Jersey Boys," the hit Broadway musical about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, will open early next year in the Palazzo, casino executives announced today.

The production tells the band's story through its music and "appeals to a wide range of audiences, beyond the traditional theater-goer," Rob Goldstein, president of The Venetian and the Palazzo, its under-construction sister resort, said in a statement.

"It's a score everyone knows and loves," said Scott Zeiger of Base Entertainment, which will stage the local production in partnership with New York-based Dodger Theatricals. "People are surprised when they see the show, how many of the hits are part of the pop vernacular.

"It's a compelling story, too," he added. "We even think the themes of the show, the story itself, is a good one for Vegas. Rags to riches, and a little bit of tough-guy stuff going on."

The much-anticipated opening of The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, sister and adjacent property to the Venetian, just got bigger with the addition of the Tony-Award winning smash hit musical, Jersey Boys. The perennially sold-out show, based on the life story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, has taken Broadway by storm and now has set its sights on Las Vegas, with a planned opening on the Strip set for early 2008.

Lindsey Lohan tells viewers of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" today that she's going to be celebrating her 21st birthday in Las Vegas, confirming what we reported here late last year. As we mentioned, Lohan's a lock to mark the occasion at Pure, the Caesars Palace hotspot. She turns 21 on July 2, a Monday.

Rumors also are flying that the Latin Grammys will be in Las Vegas on Nov. 2.

When comic impressionist Stephen Sorrentino finishes his three-month contract with "Legends in Concert" at Imperial Palace on May 19, the show will shift back to a format of six impressionists and no emcee (which was Sorrentino's role). The celeb acts over the summer will be Jerry Lee Lewis, Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani, the Blues Brothers, Whitney Houston and, sticking with the show, Matt Lewis as Elvis.

Luck be a lady … in 15 months: The seemingly luckless Lady Luck will not reopen until at least July 2008, we hear. Renovations at the hotel, which shuttered in March 2006, have been sluggish and its expected reopening oft-delayed. It's supposed to be renamed, too, although after its long slumber the name Lady Luck might actually seem fresh.

If Planet Hollywood and its adjacent mall are getting crowded with magicians, don't tell Nathan Burton. He's stepping up his afternoon show at the V Theater from six to eight shows per week, no longer taking a day off. If things go well, he may try to do 12 shows per week.

Ticket prices for "The Producers" will be adjusted in the customer's favor after David Hasselhoff leaves the Mel Brooks musical on Sunday. Continuing with no marquee stars, the musical will go from four tiers of pricing to three. The top ticket remains $143.50 but the second tier of $128.50 will disappear. Sweet Water Prime Seafood Debuts in Green Valley.

Trendy restaurant boasts healthy dishes prepared with the freshest catches available.

Sweet Water Prime Seafood, a brand new fine dining restaurant and seafood market, opens its doors today in Henderson. The debut is highly anticipated, as the restaurant is located along South Eastern Avenue where a high volume of traffic passes each day, witnessing the progression of development.

Sweet Water Prime Seafood is the result of collaboration between restaurant pioneers Spencer Sabatasso and Sean Steele along with renowned chef Michael D. Owings. The menu is comprised of healthy dishes prepared with the freshest seasonal ingredients. All seafood served has been caught and flown in within the previous 48 hours, and no trans-fat is used. Inspired by Asian, French and Pacific Coast cuisine, each dish was thoughtfully created with a flavor profile designed to appeal to the senses. All the while, the health conscious, particularly diabetics, were kept in mind.

In addition to being a restaurant, Sweet Water Prime Seafood is also a market. Just inside the entrance is a display case and ice trough featuring fresh shellfish and prime seafood steaks available for purchase. Recipes and tips will soon be posted on www.sweetwaterprimeseafood.com. Soups and platters are also available to go.

“As society becomes more health conscious, the desire for fresh seafood is skyrocketing,” said Sabatasso, President and Chief Operations Officer for Sweet Water Prime Seafood. “We are working to set the standard not only for what a truly great seafood restaurant offers, but what a truly great restaurant in general offers with our outstanding menu and excellent service.”

The restaurant itself is 6,800 square-feet with a maximum capacity of 200. The two show kitchens, numerous Chef’s tables and Chef’s expediter table are key elements designed to allow guests to appreciate every step of preparation. Additional features include a luxurious bar with deep purple velvet booths, granite countertops and Swarovski crystal starfish lanterns, an enclosed patio and a room with a fireplace available for private functions.

Hours of operation are currently 5 to 12 p.m., and will expand to 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting on May 9. The restaurant is located at 9460 South Eastern Avenue, just south of the 215. For additional information, call

NORM: Roseanne would enjoy 'The View'

Roseanne Barr says she's interested.

With rumors flying that she's on the short list to replace Rosie O'Donnell on "The View," Barr told KVVU-TV, Channel 5, that she would welcome the opportunity.

However, she emphasized that she has had no contact with the show's executives.

She told the KVVU morning show team that she would be good at stirring up controversies of her own.

Barr, a headliner at New York-New York, angered gays and lesbians last month when she told her radio show listeners she was tired of gays "only talking about gay issues."

NORM: MTV awards look at LV ceremony

MTV's Video Music Awards show is headed in a new direction.

For the first time since the show's inception in 1984, the event will be in Las Vegas, with several new programming twists.

An announcement, I'm told, could come as soon as today that the VMA's will be Sept. 9 at the Palms' new venue, The Pearl.

The celebrity Web site, TMZ.com, reported that MTV is moving away from the repeated reruns of the show. Instead, remixed versions will be created to lump together music genres such as pop and rap. Past ceremonies have taken place in New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

BRITNEY EYES VEGAS

Britney Spears is taking baby steps toward a comeback, and there are growing signs she has Las Vegas in her plans.

The recently rehabbed pop star was in San Diego on Tuesday night for what was being billed as her first public music performance since 2004.

She made an appearance Tuesday night with The M+Ms, a group made up of her back-up band and dancers, at the House of Blues in San Diego.

Stacie Schmidt, talent booker for the Las Vegas House of Blues, confirmed that the group also has House of Blues gigs in Anaheim tonight, Hollywood on Thursday and Las Vegas on Sunday.

"I cannot confirm Britney will be here, but I can confirm the show will be sold out," Schmidt said.

MGMGrand.com Wins Webby Award.
From:vegastripping.com

MGMGrand's website has won a prestigious Webby Award in the "Corporate Communications" category beating out Kelloggs, Adobe, Would You Like A Website, and Digital Digm.

The MGMGrand website is quite a spiffy flash based design that is one of the best of all the joints in town. Now that Web 2.0 is upon us, casino companies have begun to invest in their online properties as equally as their real ones. Most of the major casinos have upgraded their sites in the last year, with only a handful of notable exceptions * cough Bellagio *.

It wasn't all that long ago that casino websites looked like a bizarre amalgam of poorly executed animated gifs (Westward Ho!) disgusting tiled backgrounds (Bourbon Street) and color schemes that closely resemble poop smeared on a craps table (New Frontier).

Kudos to the MGMMirage Internet Marketing & Operations team for excecuting truly beautiful web properties.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
May 2007

Every year, May brings out the best in Las Vegas entertainment.  In recent months, a ton of shows have just opened, and there are still more are on the horizon.  The summer season is upon us, and it is a crucial time for productions to get a strong foothold into the entertainment world and establish themselves for the very busy fall season.  The summer will generally determine what shows are going to be staying around for a while and which ones will be closing forever.  This May is going to be an interesting month for a lot of reasons.  May is always an odd transitional month…the weather is changing as frequently as the shows…the only thing that we can really count on is that we know that by the end of the month, things will just start getting hot.

Remember that Mother's Day is on the 13th.  If you're in town, there are several shows that will offer specials for you and your mother.  If you're not in town…just remember Mom.

May 15th is the 102nd Anniversary of the founding of the City of Las Vegas.  No one really cares about this statistic.  We had a great 100 year celebration, and we may have to wait for the 150 year mark to get the city to celebrate again.

Helldorado Days are on the horizon. A Las Vegas tradition since 1934, Helldorado Days recaptures the spirit of the Old West. It is a celebration of our community's western heritage for residents and visitors.  It is the longest-running civic in the area.  For generations, southern Nevadans have joined in Helldorado Days with parades and events that highlight our city's western heritage. The event is hosted by the Las Vegas Elks. The annual Helldorado parade will be on Saturday, May 19, 2007 at 7:00 pm, and will feature floats, bands, civic organizations, school groups and our community's elected officials.

Beacher's Unprofessional Bowling Association is starting up at Lucky Strike Bowling Lanes.  Jeff Beacher and his zany cast of characters will all be there every Monday. B.U.B.A. (Beacher's Unprofessional Bowling Association) has a 128 team single elimination bowling tournament.  The winning team will receive a free flight to the Bahamas and complimentary rooms at Atlantis.  This is not your regular bowling match, there will be stilt walkers, acrobats, a Lady rolling in Glass, The Worlds oldest Male Stripper, Go-Go Girls and much more going on to distract you as you bowl.  The Strip Clubs will be facing other Strip Clubs, Fire Departments will battle each other, and Nightclubs will take on other Nightclubs.  B.U.B.A. has the potential for ironic competitions and face offs such as Pimps against the Cops.

The Scinta's will be closing their doors (at least for a while.)  The family of singers have had a great run in town…starting off seven years ago at the Hilton nightclub, and then moving over to the Rio, and finally at the Sahara.  They are a group that will truly be missed, and at least, I hope that they find another spot here in the future.  The Scinta's, along with token Irishman Peter O'Donnell, have made Las Vegas their home and were active in the community.  It will not be the same city without them.

Taking over at the Sahara will be "Matsuri." Matsuri is a spirited heart-pounding Japanese production that fuses the allure of world-class athletics and extreme sports into an array of stimulating stunts, breathtaking acrobatics, and symphony of sounds created by tapping, clapping, and stomping the stage. World-renown as the number one longest-running production show in Japan, Matsuri celebrates the human mind, body, and spirit by engaging audience members with an interactive, physical, and thrilling glimpse of Japanese tradition and culture.  The show was here for a two-month run last year at the Riviera.  Producers were hoping to bring it back, and it looks as if they have succeeded.
"Shag with a Twist" has closed its doors at the Plaza.  This kitsch musical dance show ran for five months downtown…which is actually four months longer than I expected.
Comedian Louie Anderson celebrated his one-year anniversary at the Excalibur Hotel. The celebration at his show included surprise visits by other comics in the city–Rosanne Barr, George Wallace, and Carrot Top; all joined Louie on stage at the start of his show to offer him good wishes and to sing Happy Birthday to him.

Also celebrating one-year anniversaries are Nathan Burton, The Price is Right, Love, and the Bevertainers at the Rio.
ICE: direct from Russia has just opened at the Riviera.  It is an ice show that combines traditional ice skating with acrobatic and aerial performances.  The cast of 42 will guide audiences on a magical journey from the bitter cold of Moscow to warmth and vibrant colors of the Las Vegas desert. Debra Brown, of former Cirque fame, adapted the show.
Comedienne Roseanne Barr has extended her "All You Can Eat Comedy" show at New York, New York through Mid-June. Barr has been getting a bit of press lately because rumor has it that she is on the short list to replace Rosie O'Donnell on The View.  It would be an interesting change…though Barr just recently stated that no one from the show has had any contact with her yet.
After all sorts of intrigue and rumors of fits and breakdowns, Carmen Electra has left the Hans Klok, "The Beauty of Magic" production at Planet Hollywood.  Pamela Anderson has signed on to replace her.  The stage spectacular will combine the illusions of Klok with the sexiness of Anderson in a new and unique production.  Klok's production hopes to fill the void that was left with Siegfried & Roy's absence.

Legendary entertainer Clint Holmes, a favorite on the Las Vegas stage, previews his autobiographical musical "Just Another Man" beginning June 1, exclusively for Las Vegas audiences, inside the Judy Bayley Theatre at UNLV. The show, a look at the life and career of an extraordinary talent, will eventually travel to London, before hopefully premiering on Broadway.  "Just Another Man" is based on the true story of Holmes' parents – his father an African-American jazz musician and his mother, a classically trained opera singer from Great Britain. It begins in 1944 and covers six decades.  "Just Another Man," is presented by the Nevada Conservatory Theatre.

From "The Vegas Eye"

Vegas Lands Another One

An Eye Exclusive

According to well placed sources, MTV has decided to bring their hugely popular Video Music Awards show celebrating the best music and videos of the past year to Las Vegas. "It's definitely coming to Vegas," said our source, hinting that the decision had already been made and was starting to circulate internally. While it would appear that no location has yet been named to host the event, MTV staffers are working hard to find an appropriate venue. After reading this breaking news, no doubt that nightclub owners across the city are already salivating over the dozens of big name stars that the show attracts as well as the big spending hoi-polloi that are sure to follow the award show to Las Vegas. Of course, that doesn't include the massive coverage our city would receive with a disposable income spending demographic that tunes into MTV on a regular basis. Although the VMA's, which started in 1984, were created as an alternative to the Grammy's, it has become a pop culture barometer of what is hot while bestowing 'Moon Men' to winning artists. The show has traditionally been held in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami. On the bigger picture, with the Billboard Music Awards, Country Music Awards and many other large scale award shows making pilgrimages to Las Vegas, the VMA's would help sew up Sin City as a true, alternative host city for shows of these kinds. Stay tuned, and remember where you heard it first!

Conde Nuts

Revered travel gospel, Conde Nast, recently released their annual list of the planet's hottest new hotels, restaurants and watering holes and several Las Vegas venues found their way onto the list. It's a seemingly odd bunch with some glaring omissions and somehow only touches three properties in the entire city. Oh well, perhaps the editorial and advertising departments are taking their lunch a little too closely together. Don't get us wrong; on the restaurant-side, the awards and acclaim deservedly continue to pour in for celebrated chef Guy Savoy and his first restaurant opened outside of France in Restaurant Guy Savoy. With Savoy heir, Franck, brilliantly touching tables in the dining room and a Cross-Atlantic tag team power house of Damien Dulas and Adam Sobel in the kitchen, it's no wonder the haute cuisine hotspot was nominated for a Best New Restaurant from the James Beard Foundation. Also, landing on the restaurant list was another Caesars Palace eatery in NYC transplant, and in our opinion Caesar's second best Italian restaurant after Il Mulino, Rao's. It wasn't the only Italian eatery to make the list either, as the N9NE Group's newest restaurant venture, Nove Italiano, also landed a spot on the list, buoyed in part by the one dish everyone can agree on, even Conde Naste, the Nove Spaghetti. Nightlife wise, the Playboy Club's appearance on the list has to confirm the revitalized brand's place in the current cultural lexicon, while big brother, MOON Nightclub also received special mention as being North American's only retractable roof nightclub. That would make a trifecta for the N9NE Group's three new venues in the Palm's new Fantasy Tower, and has to feel somewhat satisfying for N9NE owner Michael Morton and Scott DeGraff, who designed the new outlets, regardless of what his current situation might be. But then again, Conde Nast has always had a thing for what N9NE offers, as N9NE Steakhouse has been a longtime resident on Conde Nast's Top 100 Restaurants in the World list. On the hotel side, Red Rock Resort, Casino & Spa was the only Las Vegas property represented, also earning a double nod as one of only several properties on the list where room rates dipped below the $200 mark. Red Rock was one of the better North American properties reviewed, earning the boast of "self-contained oasis" for the "those that have been there, done that". Rounding out the list was the Spa section which once again went back to the same properties; Caesars Palace and Red Rock. We found that last nomination the most curious, especially because of the experience we wrote about at the RR spa awhile back; complimentary pink ladies razors in the men's spa, no hot water to use the pink razor with and befuddling motion sensor sinks that make shaving a nightmare. While we appreciate the attention the magazine is bringing to Las Vegas, we just ask them to widen their scope next time around.

One former Baywatch star replaces the other.
Anderson fills void left by Electra in Klok magic show.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD REVIEW-JOURNAL.

When Carmen Electra needed more space, producers of a new magic show at Planet Hollywood Resort instead climbed to the top step of the lifeguard tower to get Pamela Anderson, the most famous "Baywatch" babe of them all.

Anderson will spend at least the summer as "The Beauty of Magic," adding the marquee sizzle to the revue co-starring Dutch illusionist Hans Klok, a relatively obscure name in the United States.

A source close to the deal said Anderson would be paid about $4 million for the 12-week engagement.

Breaking the Ice

Riviera's new 'Ice: Direct from Russia' blends acrobatics, skating.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD REVIEW-JOURNAL

Too bad reality TV wasn't around to document this extreme makeover.

The new show "Ice: Direct from Russia" bears a distinct resemblance to the "Russian Ice Spectacular" that's played in overseas resort meccas for years. But locals who don't get to Malaysia all that often are more likely to be reminded of Cirque du Soleil.

The entire ice revue has been reworked by director Debra Brown, who spent years with Cirque and whose choreography still is on display in "O" and "Mystere."

Producer Sergey Ryshkoff has been instrumental in the Russian ice circus since it was under the wing of the Soviet Union, and spun off the country's first independent circus in 1993. But when the show became the leading candidate to replace the Riviera's long-running "Splash," which closed last October, Ryshkoff invited Brown to take a look at it.

SHOW REVIEW: "Steve Wyrick — Real Magic"

On the Right Track: Steve Wyrick's new magic show is his best yet, but it may be too late.
By MIKE WEATHERFORD REVIEW-JOURNAL

Timing is everything in show business, and the timing of this one could be better.

Steve Wyrick has opened the best show of his 10 years in Las Vegas. It better be, given the $35 million it took for the magician to build a custom theater and the competition headed his way.

Wyrick always has taken a "do it yourself" attitude to Las Vegas stardom. He doesn't wait for people to hire him; he builds his own performance spaces. Delays in finishing the new one — his fourth since his downtown debut at the Lady Luck in 1997 — suggest he stretched his resources to the max to open the 500-seat theater and nightclub at the Desert Passage mall next to the Planet Hollywood Resort.

Cirque du Soleil plans to get into the magic business with rock-star illusionist Criss Angel in the summer of 2008. But Wyrick won't have to wait that long for competition: Dutch magician Hans Klok will soon open right next door at Planet Hollywood.

Las Vegas Magician Nathan Burton To Be Frozen Inside A M-Shaped Ice Block For 24 Hours To Celebrate Miracle Mile Shops' New Name.

Magician Nathan Burton will encase himself in a gigantic M-shaped ice sculpture for 24 hours in front of Miracle Mile Shops’ north Las Vegas Boulevard entrance on Monday, May 21 beginning at 10 a.m.

Even though temperatures in May average 90 degrees, Burton will have to withstand freezing cold inside the ice.  The frozen ‘M’ is so massive it can last up to three days in 100-degree weather.  Weighing nine tons and having 10-inch thick walls, Burton will not be able to escape until several Miracle Mile owners break open the ice to set him free at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22.

Burton will be joined by 96 showgirls rotating in and out of the ice to keep him company.  Visitors cruising the Strip will be able to touch and inspect the ‘M’, which is shaped as such to celebrate Miracle Mile Shops’ ongoing multi-million dollar makeover focusing on de-theming the center’s original design.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values From The Las Vegas Advisor.
May 2007

1. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 Hours - $4.95
The best dining bargain in Las Vegas is the 10-ounce filet-cut steak dinner at Ellis Island, the casino at the Super 8 Motel on Koval near E. Flamingo. It’s served with salad, vegetable, potato, garlic bread, and rolls for $4.95, 24 hours a day. But it’s not on the menu; you have to ask specifically for it.

2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-3 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.

3. Prime Rib Dinner - California - 4-11 pm daily - $6.99
The $6.99 prime rib special at the California downtown starts with a full salad bar, continues with a big cooked-to-order piece of prime beef, plus potato and veggie, and finishes up with a little cherries jubilee for dessert. The same meal would cost at least triple in any other city in the country.

4. Beer - Casino Royale - Daily - $1
We’ve replaced the $1.25 beers at Slots A Fun with $1 Michelobs at the center-Strip Casino Royale. This is a 24/7 deal and the bar staff is ultra pleasant about doling ’em out (it’s not uncommon to encounter a staff that’s resentful of this type of deal). You can also get two flavors of frozen margaritas for a buck apiece. Bottom line, though: Beers for $1 are better than beers for $1.25.

5. Buffet - Mirage - Daily - $12.50-$22.50
This is a gourmet buffet that’s high on quality and low, comparatively, on price. It has an unusual noodle station, where a half-dozen selections of dim sum are served up fresh (good shrimp siu mai); you can also get Asian noodle soup. The raw bar features cold Dungeness crab, small-to-medium peeled shrimp, lox, and one of the best buffet ceviches in town. There are also several Middle Eastern dishes at the salad station, along with Italian, Chinese, rotisserie, carving, and dessert stations.

6. Sign-Up Promotion - Stratosphere - Daily - coin-in
Stratosphere moves up one this month as the #6 deal in the Top Ten, with its solid gambling-based new-member players club sign-up promotion. Play quarter slots or video poker for a few hours and get a value-escalating (and cumulative) assortment of goodies, including $100 in bounce-back cash.

7. The Comedy Stop - Tropicana - Daily - $19.95
With show-ticket prices rising like crazy here, we went with a pure number play to replace the Macster. Of the roughly six-dozen ticketed shows in town, the absolute least expensive is the “The Comedy Stop” at the Tropicana, which clocks in at $19.95 (#8). This show has been around since 1983 and it’s the only evening-entertainment option in Las Vegas that’s less than $20 (and it includes a drink). It’s something like going to an underground nightclub to watch up-and-coming comics worth seeing. You can find $5-off coupons in many of the freebie magazines (look for Today In Las Vegas), so a couple can make a night out of it for $30.

8. Hot Dog - Suncoast - 11 am-5 pm - 75¢
The 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at Suncoast replaces the 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at South Point. They’re the same price. They’re available the same hours. And they come with the same kraut and onions at no extra charge. So why Suncoast and not South Point? Because following another time-honored Top Ten tradition, ties go to the coupon. What that means is that Suncoast participates in the LVA coupon program while South Point doesn’t. So by going to Suncoast you get the added benefit of being able to play your $5 matchplay from the POV while there. It’s a good and fair tie-breaker that also serves to support those who support us.

9. Lunch Special - Diamond China - 11:30 am-3 pm - $3.95
The $3.95 lunch special at Diamond China stays in the Top Ten again this month. It’s still going strong, with a big daily window of 11:30 am to 3 pm to get it. The word’s out on this secret, though. In naming Diamond China the best Chinese restaurant in its big “Best of Las Vegas” survey, the Las Vegas Review-Journal cited this special specifically. Diamond China is located at 3909 W. Sahara.

10. Steak Specials - Silverton - 24 Hours - $4.99/$8.99
The $1.99 breakfast special at all Station casinos didn’t last long; it’s gone from existence, and therefore, from the Top Ten. We were tempted to replace it with the new $1 bacon-and-eggs deal at Railroad Pass, but it’s too far out of town to make the cut. Instead, our new breakfast recommendation is a top $4.99 steak & eggs deal at Silverton. And since this deal is served 24 hours a day in tandem with a good steak & shrimp deal, we’re making it a dual recommendation.
