Amazing Johnathan faces heart transplant.

Sahara headliner Amazing Johnathan said doctors have informed him he faces a heart transplant if the latest treatments fail.

The comic magician said he has been taking blood thinners and will have a defibrillator placed in his heart next week.

"The heart is damaged and not going to get any better," he told Vegas Confidential.

He said a virus has been destroying his heart since childhood. "And they said I'll probably need a transplant."

He was shocked, he said, to learn his doctors are convinced he's already had a heart attack.

"If I lose the weight and keep my blood thin, I should be all right," he said. "They are seeing what they can do without doing the transplant."

He indicated he had no plans to end his show, although he had suggested recently he was considering retirement.

LV publisher subpoenaed to testify.
Told to bring manuscript of autobiography of a hit man to Chicago racketeering trial.
By A.D. HOPKINS Las Vegas Review Journal

A Las Vegas publisher was subpoenaed Monday to testify in a Chicago racketeering trial and bring with him the manuscript of a pending autobiography of hit man Frank Cullotta.

Anthony Curtis, owner of Huntington Press, said he received the subpoena to testify in United States v. Nicholas W. Calabrese et al, a complex organized crime case involving multiple alleged felonies including the murders of Las Vegas crime boss Anthony Spilotro and his brother, Michael, in June 1986, and 16 others.

Curtis was ordered to bring with him the manuscript of "Cullotta: The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster, and Government Witness," by Dennis N. Griffin and Frank Cullotta. He was ordered to appear on May 15, but said he will refer the matter to his attorney for advice on whether to honor the subpoena or fight it.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies

Rock royalty Prince has been playing at The Rio for the last few months, putting on what many (including me) have called the best show in Vegas. Rumors had been circulating that the end of March was going to be the end of the run for his Royal Badness but the hotel has announced that he will continue playing through at least April. Tickets are on sale now for the shows that will run on Fridays and Saturdays through April 28 by calling 702-777-7776

Beverage servers at the Flamingo Showroom are proud that they were able to talk management into offering 1-liter bottles of Fiji water for $5. It used to be the little 11-ounce bottles were sold at that price, which irked a lot of show-goers. But the mark-up is still significant: The official Fiji Web site is selling cases of 12 1-liter bottles for $26.50, or $2.21 a bottle.

Stephanie Jordan, vocalist with the "Fantasy" topless show at the Luxor, keeps her clothes on during her performances, but she's as sexy as any of the show's stars. She manages to be provocative and sensual without baring all, except for her soul when she sings.

Fans can check out Jordan on Thursdays when she performs as part of the "Unplugged" series, hosted by guitarist Michael Soli at the House of Blues.
Las Vegas SUN: LOOKING IN ON: ENTERTAINMENT

Caesars Palace headliner Celine Dion plans a Lake Mead excursion this week, but not for sightseeing purposes. Instead, she'll be lip-syncing a song for a new music video.

Michael Jackson's spokeswoman, Raymone Bain, tells TMZ.com that the invitation to a so-called Jackson world tour kickoff party at the Luxor on June 10 was "a fraud." Local food and beverage publisher Michael Politz was apparently duped after someone provided him with the bogus invitation, which he sent to TMZ.com and posted on his newsletter Web site without verifying the information.

Whispers have magician Nathan Burton currently developing and producing a television situation comedy entitled “NATHAN!” Set in Las Vegas. Much of the show’s material will be drawn from “real life” experiences and people Burton has encountered on his rapid rise to Las Vegas fame. The average cost of a production-show ticket in Las Vegas is up 11 percent from last year, according to the Las Vegas Advisor's annual comparison of show tickets. The Advisor's research shows that the average cost of a production-show ticket (touring headliners not considered) is slightly less than $70 ($68.94). Sixteen people had to exit from Speed — The Ride at the Sahara, in a rather unconventional way Thursday afternoon after the 90-second roller coaster came to an abrupt halt.

The ride had just made it through its outdoor loop when a booster mechanism with a magnetic motor failed, according to Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison.

The cars stopped and rolled backwards until coming to rest on the tracks about 25 feet off the ground.

VEGAS GRAND PRIX: Fast cars to slow traffic downtown.

Commuters should prepare for closed streets and detours this week.

By OMAR SOFRADZIJA/Las Vegas Review Journal

Making room for fast race cars will mean closed streets, detours and slow commutes in downtown Las Vegas this week ahead of Sunday's inaugural Vegas Grand Prix.

Paths to several central city hotels, casinos, businesses and government offices will be squeezed or closed at times, leaving race fans and downtown commuters to work their way around a patchwork of alternate routes and barricaded byways.

Planners hope the race, which will use city streets for its 2.4-mile course, will only be mildly disruptive to traffic norms. But they make no guarantees.

John Katsilometes on how the old gang at Coffee Pub hopes to re-create magic at new restaurant.
From: The Las Vegas Sun

Patrons who yearn for the glory days of the Coffee Pub, which ended when owner Marty Brees sold the establishment on West Sahara Avenue a year and a half ago, will be happy to know that many of Brees' former employees are getting the band back together.

The old crew is about to launch a new restaurant, Beach Cafe, at 7750 S. Jones Blvd. ( at Robindale Road). Much of the staff who worked for Brees, who now owns the Juice Bars housed in Las Vegas Athletic Clubs, is reuniting for the new venture under longtime Coffee Pub manager Robyn Bradley and her husband, Scott.

The Bradleys have partnered with her brother, Kevin Aivaz . Another Coffee Pub mainstay, Lisa Hayes, is the manager of the new place, which will open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and will offer full breakfast and lunch menus and feature (of course) a beach atmosphere.

The Coffee Pub is still open, under new ownership, but lacks the top-notch service that once made it a local favorite. Robyn Bradley says her staff is committed to the type of service that made the original Coffee Pub a power-lunch haven for more than 20 years. "It was the people, more than the food, that made the Coffee Pub a success," she said by phone this week. The tentative opening date for Beach Cafe is April 16.

STAGE: Come for the show, stay for the gift shop.
Spamalot's not bad, but check out those shirts!
By Julie Seabaugh/Las Vegas Weekly

First, the gift shop: bloodthirsty stuffed bunnies, "Fetchez La Vache!" ("Get the cow!") tees, coconut halves "imported exclusively by African swallows." It's a merchandising dream for anyone who was ever a college stoner or Anglophile-comedy geek, providing they can now swing the decidedly adult price tags. And what better environ to don that new Black Knight costume and "I Fart in Your General Direction" button than the interactive, over-the-top-athon that is Monty Python's Spamalot, the stage adaptation of the British comedy troupe's film Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Two years after original Python Eric Idle spearheaded its Broadway debut, Spamalot sets up shop at the Wynn, that classy joint famed for its Ferrari dealership, AAA five-diamond rating and clientele accustomed to the finer things in life.

Did we mention the gift shop's limited-edition "Golden Honey Grail" Spam tins?

Las Vegas Top Ten Values From The Las Vegas Advisor
April 2007

1. Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 Hours - $4.95
The best dining bargain in Las Vegas is the 10-ounce filet-cut steak dinner at Ellis Island, the casino at the Super 8 Motel on Koval near E. Flamingo. It’s served with salad, vegetable, potato, garlic bread, and rolls for $4.95, 24 hours a day. But it’s not on the menu; you have to ask specifically for it.

2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11 am-3 am - 99¢
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.

3. Prime Rib Dinner - California - 5-11 pm daily - $6.99
The $6.99 prime rib special at the California downtown starts with a full salad bar, continues with a big cooked-to-order piece of prime beef, plus potato and veggie, and finishes up with a little cherries jubilee for dessert. The same meal would cost at least triple in any other city in the country.

4. Beer - Casino Royale - Daily - $1
We’ve replaced the $1.25 beers at Slots A Fun with $1 Michelobs at the center-Strip Casino Royale. This is a 24/7 deal and the bar staff is ultra pleasant about doling ’em out (it’s not uncommon to encounter a staff that’s resentful of this type of deal). You can also get two flavors of frozen margaritas for a buck apiece. Bottom line, though: Beers for $1 are better than beers for $1.25.

5. Buffet - Mirage - Daily - $12.50-$22.50
This is a gourmet buffet that’s high on quality and low, comparatively, on price. It has an unusual noodle station, where a half-dozen selections of dim sum are served up fresh (good shrimp siu mai); you can also get Asian noodle soup. The raw bar features cold Dungeness crab, small-to-medium peeled shrimp, lox, and one of the best buffet ceviches in town. There are also several Middle Eastern dishes at the salad station, along with Italian, Chinese, rotisserie, carving, and dessert stations.

6. Sign-Up Promotion - Stratosphere - Daily - coin-in
Stratosphere moves up one this month as the #6 deal in the Top Ten, with its solid gambling-based new-member players club sign-up promotion. Play quarter slots or video poker for a few hours and get a value-escalating (and cumulative) assortment of goodies, including $100 in bounce-back cash.

7. Breakfast Special - Station Casinos (All) - 24 Hours - $1.99
As part of a company-wide campaign, the locals giant Station Casinos with more than a dozen properties in Las Vegas is now offering a $1.99 bacon-and eggs breakfast 24 hours a day. It’s a great meal at a rock-bottom price, and you can order it everywhere from the Wildfire to Green Valley Ranch, from Fiesta Henderson to Red Rock. You can also get a good $2.99 burger and fries.

8. The Comedy Stop - Tropicana - Daily - $19.95
With show-ticket prices rising like crazy here, we went with a pure number play to replace the Macster. Of the roughly six-dozen ticketed shows in town, the absolute least expensive is the “The Comedy Stop” at the Tropicana, which clocks in at $19.95 (#8). This show has been around since 1983 and it’s the only evening-entertainment option in Las Vegas that’s less than $20 (and it includes a drink). It’s something like going to an underground nightclub to watch up-and-coming comics worth seeing. You can find $5-off coupons in many of the freebie magazines (look for Today In Las Vegas), so a couple can make a night out of it for $30.

9. Hot Dog - Suncoast - 11 am-5 pm - 75¢
The 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at Suncoast (#9) replaces the 75¢ all-beef hot dog available from a vendor cart in the sports book at South Point. They’re the same price. They’re available the same hours. And they come with the same kraut and onions at no extra charge. So why Suncoast and not South Point? Because following another time-honored Top Ten tradition, ties go to the coupon. What that means is that Suncoast participates in the LVA coupon program while South Point doesn’t. So by going to Suncoast you get the added benefit of being able to play your $5 matchplay from the POV while there. It’s a good and fair tie-breaker that also serves to support those who support us.

10. Lunch Special - Diamond China - 11:30 am-3 pm - $3.95
Finally, the $3.95 lunch special at Diamond China returns to the Top Ten this month (#10). It’s still going strong, with a big daily window of 11:30 am to 3 pm to get it. The word’s out on this secret, though. In naming Diamond China the best Chinese restaurant in its big “Best of Las Vegas” survey, the Las Vegas Review-Journal cited this special specifically. Diamond China is located at 3909 W. Sahara.

Glitz and glamor preserved
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal

Las Vegas has built its reputation on glitz and glamor, and it is well-deserved. Everything is over the top, done in a flamboyant — some say outrageous — manner. So it's little wonder that one of the world's most flamboyant performers, who graced Las Vegas stages for many years, would leave behind a legacy for all to see. Founded in 1979, the Liberace Museum is home to a collection of dazzling jewelry, rare antiques, unsurpassed wardrobe, unique and historical pianos and custom cars.

Plus, it also serves a much greater purpose than fans coming to "ooohh" and "aaahh" over "Mr. Showmanship's" favorite items. The non-profit museum supports the work of The Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts which has funded scholarships for the arts since 1976. The scholarship program has distributed more than $5 million and touched the lives of more than 2,200 students at 100 universities.

Located at 1775 E. Tropicana Ave., the museum is divided into two areas: Building One houses the Piano and Car Galleries; Building Two showcases the Costume and Jewelry Collections, a re-creation of Liberace's Palm Springs bedroom, and the Awards Gallery. The Grand Gallery showcases changing exhibitions.

Liberace's collections can be found in Building Two, including pieces of rare Moser crystal from Czechoslovakia. Liberace owned service for 12, with 14 individual glasses for each setting. It is one of two collections ever hand made, the other is owned by Queen Elizabeth.

I can personally vouch for this. Lee (this is what his friends called him) and I became friends over the years, and I had dinner with him several times at his home. He was a great guy and had a wonderful sense of humor. He also wasn't anything like his professional persona.

He usually wore jeans or shorts and a T-shirt around the house or even when he went grocery shopping, something he did on his own. "It's funny," he told me one day, "when I'm at the supermarket, people will pass me, pause, then say to whomever they're with, 'That's Liberace.' And invariably, the person with them will respond, 'Don't be silly, Liberace would never be doing his own shopping.' I sometimes stop and say, 'Yes, it is me,' but most of time I just smile."

But I digress. Back to what you can look forward to seeing at the museum. Among the many rare pianos on display is a rhinestone-encrusted Baldwin grand. And not to be missed is Liberace's favorite piano, a remarkable concert grand covered entirely in glittering mirror squares. The collection also includes a hand-painted Pleyel, as well a Chickering grand once owned by George Gershwin. Eighteen rare and antique pianos are on display in the Piano Gallery.

Then, of course, there's Liberace's lavish costume collection and jewelry display, including a rhinestone-lined, full-length Black Diamond Mink cape and a 200-pound "King Neptune" costume, along with the world-famous red, white and blue hot pants suit.

You'll also see the trademark candelabra ring, complete with platinum "candlesticks" and diamond "flames," a dazzling white and yellow gold piano-shaped ring, complete with 260 individually set diamonds, as well his piano-shaped wristwatch, paved in a glittering collection of diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds.

The museum also houses many of Liberace's one-of-a-kind automobiles, including the "Stars and Stripes," a hand-painted red, white and blue Rolls-Royce convertible. Another Rolls-Royce is clad entirely in mirrored tiles and etched with a custom design of galloping horses. Its sparkle is matched by the nearby Roadster covered in Austrian rhinestones.

If you want to take home a souvenir, you can buy Liberace-related items, audio tapes, compact discs and video cassettes; along with a selection of music related books, giftware, stationery and jewelry at the Museum Store and Cafe.

And that's just some of it, so it's a trip well worth making, whether you were a Liberace fan or not. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Admission: $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for seniors age 65+ as well as students with valid ID. Children ages 5 and under get in free.

NORM: Carlini does Elvis his way for fans.

Elvis would be proud. Sahara headliner and Elvis Presley stylist Trent Carlini created some electricity of his own after a series of power outages during his show Tuesday night.

After the third outage, Carlini decided to continue the show by improvising.

Two soundmen stood on the stage stairs and used flashlights to spotlight Carlini.

With band members and singers gathered around, Carlini finished his set with six songs, including the finale "My Way," to a standing ovation.

PUPPY LOVE

There's plenty of puppy love in the air at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood.

Seems seven members of the cast and crew of a film being shot there, including two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey and several producers, brought their dogs to Las Vegas for their monthlong film shoot.

The movie, tentatively called "21," is based on a true story of a team of card-counting MIT students who win millions in Las Vegas.

Spacey has been spotted in the casino with his mixed mutt, Mini.

Spacey, who portrayed Vegas headliner Bobby Darin in "Beyond the Sea," told me he may be checking out Pamplemousse, the classic old Vegas restaurant on East Sahara, long owned by Darin pal George LaForge. The former maitre d' of the Monte Carlo room at the top of the Desert Inn opened Pamplemousse on June 22, 1976, in honor of Darin, who suggested the name, French for grapefruit.

Darin, who died Dec . 20, 1973, is being honored with a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars in May, on what would have been his 71st birthday.

MAGIC MAN By Len Butcher

Every so often, as I've mentioned before in my column, I like to give you a closer look at some of the entertainers who perform on Las Vegas stages. Recently, I had a chance to sit down with master illusionist Lance Burton, who has been wowing audiences almost from the time he did his first trick at the tender age of 6.

His 13-year contract with the Monte Carlo, in a theater named for him, is the longest legal agreement ever given to any entertainer in Las Vegas history. This soft-spoken native of Louisville, Kentucky has become a favorite son of our town, due largely to his unending contributions to local charities.

Relaxing in his dressing room after a show, he says he got into magic because "I can't do anything else, so I didn't have a choice." He remembers his early life spending a lot of time on his grandfather's farm where he acquired his work ethic. "I'd go there on the weekends and during the summer and would help bale hay and tobacco and milk cows at 4 a.m. with my grandfather. It was a working farm and farm work is really hard work."

In 1981, he left Kentucky in a beat-up old car with his tuxedo and seven ducks, but within a week of arriving in Los Angeles, he earned a gig on the Johnny Carson show. I asked him how that came about.

"As the old saying goes, 'Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.' I was 21 when I moved out west. I'd been working hard preparing for it. In the summertime, my friend Mac King (now a staple at Harrah's) and I worked at a little theme park called Tombstone Junction. It was a small theme park which looked like a western town. They'd have gun fights in the street, three times a day. These guys would come in and rob the bank, have gun fights while a country and western music band played on the outdoor stage. We performed magic in the Red Garter Saloon. I'd been doing my act there three times a day, seven days a week, all summer long for three summers.

"When I moved out west, the act had progressed pretty far for someone that young. I had two week's work lined up and decided to come out and see what happened. Someone from the Carson show saw me, liked what he saw and I got booked. That was my big break."

Like many magicians, Burton includes animals in his act. "I used to watch a magician called Harry Collins and he used doves so as a young kid I always had that image in my mind of a magician with animals. I think I was 14 when I got my first pair of doves. Now we have doves, a parakeet named Elvis, ducks, a goose and we have a chicken, pigeons. It's a bit like having a little farm."

One of his new illusions is called Solid Gold Lady where Burton makes $10 million in gold bricks and coins disappear, which has become a hit with audiences. Burton says the hardest part was "not figuring out the trick itself, but convincing the hotel to supply me with the $10 million in gold. It's not my gold. That would be stupid. Really stupid if you had $10 million in gold and you're going to make it disappear. It would only make sense if the gold belonged to someone else," he says laughing.

His act is a favorite with families and Burton always invites kids up on stage. I asked if any stood out in his mind. "Even after having been in magic for 40 years, I still get surprised by what kids will say. One time, I had a little boy onstage who had an English accent and I said, 'What's your name?' And he says, 'Miles.' I asked, 'How old are you, Miles?' And he replied, 'Five.' Then I asked, 'Are you married or do you have a girlfriend?' He answered, No.' I asked, 'Do you want to meet one of the girls in my show?' He says, 'No, we can't afford one of those.' Broke me up."

When asked to what he attributes his success, he said, "I think it's my haircut. That's what people look for when they go to a showÑa good haircut." Finally a guy with a sense of humor.

NORM: Goodman shoots down arena talk

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman says there is "no truth" to our Web site report that he is preparing to announce a $10 billion downtown development that would include a sports arena as the centerpiece.

"I wish it were true, but it isn't," said Goodman, who has been promising a major NBA-related announcement for this week.

Goodman and NBA Commissioner David Stern are speaking at a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon today, but it won't involve an NBA team relocating to Las Vegas.

"There is nothing to that," said Mark Broussard, director of NBA Communications.

Goodman said he will meet with Stern to discuss going forward with "an attempt to get a franchise here." Goodman said his goal is to be in "serious discussion by early spring."

"The only team that can move is the Sacramento Kings," said an NBA source. "They don't have a lease, but you don't move without an arena deal."

For casinos, Chinese New Year behind only Super Bowl
Extra steps taken to welcome Asians.
By Liz Bentson/Las Vegas Sun

When Palace Station wanted to expand its Asian gambling pit, a consulting feng shui master said separating it into two sections would bring bad luck.

The casino followed his advice, knowing that for its growing number of Asian-born customers, the ancient Chinese tradition of feng shui is a spiritual imperative rather than an attractive way to organize furniture.

The man who made that connection is Rich Slack, who presents his business card face-up, using both hands - a sign of respect in Asian culture - and shoots the breeze with customers in Mandarin Chinese.

Steve Wyrick Reveals his Complexities
By Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Magazine

Long awaited, highly anticipated and even doubted at times, illusionist Steve Wyrick has been the talk of the town recently. Vowing an all-encompassing entertainment venue at Desert Passage inside the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, a place where several shows could share one space, a retail outlet, and, just to make the concept even more difficult, attach an upscale ultra lounge—it was a profound concept.

Finally, after $35 million and months of waiting, all doubts have been quelled, all anticipation rewarded and the opening of the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex has delivered on every promise.

For a man who has been a presence on the Las Vegas magic circuit for almost a decade and has the recognition of just about every other billboard on the Strip, Wyrick is remarkably approachable. It’s this accessibility, and moreover his everyman approach, that sets his show apart.

“I wanted to make this an intimate space,” Wyrick said of his own production and the methodology behind the layout of the theater. “I still wanted a space large enough to accommodate some of the mega illusions you will see in my show, but an environment warm enough to translate the less technical and personal tricks of both myself and the other productions to anywhere in the room. I want people in the last row to still feel the magic.”

With a 500-seat theater, that connection is a tall order. Yet Wyrick and his Real Magic show are well-versed in knowing how to utilize different spaces. His first theater at Lady Luck was a cozy 350 seats, before moving to the Sahara with a daunting 830 seats.

“I have taken design ideas from all the theaters I have performed at and created what I believe to be an ideal performance space. The complex as a whole is a product of the experiences I’ve had, learning from both the good and bad. I wanted to do something in an amazing location, something completely high-end, something with amazing entertainers, and have the capabilities to make use of all the wonderful technology out there. We have achieved all of those things.”

Wyrick is one of only two productions in Las Vegas to have an LED curtain, the other being Celine Dion’s A New Day … . Also, 100 percent of the lighting in the theater is intelligent, meaning it can move independently as opposed to conventional stationary lighting. Racking up even more innovation, he claims to be the only magician on the Strip to incorporate water elements into his illusions.

“I have tried to make sure my show is unique,” Wyrick said. “I want to go outside the conventional realm of what people expect from magic. I liken the production value in here more to a Broadway show than a traditional magic act. We are re-creating the art.”

Joining Wyrick in the 33,000-square-foot, four-level complex is ventriloquist-comedian Ronn Lucas and singer Martin Nievera. All three perform in the theater on the top floor, which rests on Triq Ultra Lounge, the city’s newest nightlife arrival.

Wyrick’s motivation for the hybrid was to have a cocktail lounge for audience members both before and after the show, as well as nightlife presence in Desert Passage that had previously been minimal. Earth tones and reds continue Wyrick’s aim for comfort, and the service rivals any resort in the city. It is a complete guest experience, a one-stop shop for entertainment.

The magic is mind-boggling, but the real feat is how all the different elements of the complex run flawlessly and work seamlessly together. This was worth the wait.

Burlesque and Blackjack
Caesars' Sultry Place to Play.
By Paul  Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine

Inspired by the vibrant pulse and beguiling image of the Pussycat Dolls, Caesars Palace is introducing a casino within a casino where provocative dancers and sexy dealers draw as much attention as the cards and chips.

Set in a bustling area near Pure, the Pussycat Dolls Lounge and the race and sports book, the oval-shaped pit features 10 blackjack tables, one roulette table and one Big Six wheel. Themed slot machines specifically created for Caesars Palace and a wall of Pussycat Doll merchandise complete the venue.

Two elevated cages where Pussycat Dolls take turns dancing overlook the pit. Special lighting and a dedicated sound system deliver a unique experience for players.

“Caesars is a classic, iconic gaming experience,” said Jimmy Wike, vice president of table games. “We were looking to target a little bit more of the younger market—hip and trendy and cool.”

From the black boots and fishnet stockings on the dealers to the table legs with fishnets and stilettos to the leopard-print chair upholstery, no fashion or decorating detail has been overlooked. Vivid pink (or sometimes blue) hats on the dealers and pink padded armrests on the tables pop out amid the brown tones of the tables, chrome cages and leopard-print carpet.

“It’s exactly how I pictured it,” said Robin Antin, creator and choreographer of the Pussycat Dolls. “If you saw the very first rough sketch I did at the very beginning and all the conversations I had with the company I designed this with, it’s incredible to see it now come to life. Because it’s exactly what I wanted—I’m so proud of it.”

Antin said classic films featuring sailors inspired the salty costumes of the dealers, who playfully march together through the main casino shortly before the special gaming area opens.

The dealers’ “basic instruction is to have fun,” Wike said. “We trained the majority of these dealers ourselves. We selected these individuals for their personalities and their upbeat and positive attitudes.”

Gaming action goes from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. The popularity of the venue, the captivated stares of the men and wry smiles from the women, suggests those hours could increase.

“I feel like that this is such a new chapter in my life and the life of the Pussycat Dolls. I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined being part of a casino. It’s so incredible,” Antin said.

A grand opening is set for Saturday, March 3, when the pop group Pussycat Dolls, on tour with Christina Aguilera, are expected to appear.

Both Antin and Wike are quick to credit Caesars Palace President Gary Selesner for the idea of having the Dolls adorn the casino.

“The Pussycat Dolls are one of the hottest acts in the world today, and the Pussycat Dolls Casino will be yet another must-see attraction at Caesars Palace, complementing the recent openings of Rao’s, Qua Baths & Spa and Restaurant Guy Savoy,” Selesner said.

The Pussycat Dolls Casino in Caesars Palace creates a new, sexy meaning for when the dealers go bust and a new, sexy twist to Las Vegas’ gaming landscape.

Stars of The Strip
Our First Kind-of-Annual Vegas Oscars.
By Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Magazine

We would never leave Las Vegas, but it seems like we are always fearful and loathing come Oscar time, never quite getting the cinematic recognition we deserve. To show our respect, we have come up with our own movie trophy dedicated to the best city on the planet, named after the best mayor on the planet, the lovely Oscar B. Goodman. Ladies and gentleman, we are happy to announce the winners of this year’s Oscar B.’s:

For the Film that Really Should have Won a Real Oscar: Bugsy, hands down. The Academy snuck in two awards for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, but Warren Beatty deserved the big one for his homage to one of our most well-known casino developers.

Movie You Should See Before Coming to Vegas: Honeymoon in Vegas. Anytime you have 34 flying Elvi, a bride and lots of impulsive behavior, you can’t go wrong.

Vegas Movie that Made You Wish You had a Million Dollars: Indecent Proposal. It may not be right, but it’s Demi Moore—you know you thought about it. But let’s be honest: Ladies pay Robert Redford for sex, he doesn’t pay them.

Best Vegas Musical: Viva Las Vegas. OK, maybe not really a musical, but Elvis sings and drives racecars, then bags Ann-Margret. How can you not like it? Plus, it gave us our eternal theme song.

Best Adaptation for the Screen: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. We are still having flashbacks due to Hunter S. Thompson’s psychedelic bender through the Le Bistro Lounge at the Riviera.

Best Soon-to-Be Trilogy: Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen. No, we haven’t seen the third one yet but with the track record of the first two, George Clooney and Brad Pitt have more than proven their loyalty to Sin City.

Best Vegas Entrepreneurial Flick: The Godfather Part II. Michael Corleone expands the family interests into Las Vegas and shows us how business gets done.

Movie You Shouldn’t See Before Coming to Vegas: Very Bad Things. Prostitute killed during a Vegas bachelor party. Enough said.

Best Choreography: Showgirls. What can we say? We loved Saved by the Bell.

Best Almost Vegas Movie: Swingers. Granted, most of the trouble the boys cause is in Hollywood, but after they made the pilgrimage out our way via Interstate 15, they’ve been money ever since. Vegas, baby, Vegas.

Best British Blokes in Vegas: Tie. The movie Austin Powers did the Strip proper, what with Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley, but 007 Sean Connery was the first to make lying about who you were, then having a one-night stand OK, when coming here in Diamonds Are Forever.

Best Romance: Leaving Las Vegas. Maybe it’s just because we relate to alcoholic writers and have a soft spot for hookers, but Nicolas Cage was amazing.

Best Vegas Alias: Nick Papagiorgio in National Lampoon’s Vegas Vacation. We’ll go anywhere with the Griswolds, but this was the best trip they’ve taken to date.

Best Actress:
Sharon Stone as Ginger McKenna in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 superflick Casino. She even landed a nomination for one of those real awards.

Best Performance: Robert De Niro as Sam “Ace” Rothstein in Casino. Solid.

Best picture: Ocean’s Eleven, the 1960 original. The Rat Pack robs a casino in Vegas, Frank Sinatra plays Danny Ocean and Dean Martin is Sam Harmon—a classic forever.

Aliante Station Breaks Ground By Rick Garman

When a new hotel breaks ground in Las Vegas it’s pretty big news, but it’s not something I usually spend a lot of time talking about in this space. I mean after all, groundbreaking is mostly ceremonial and there’s not a lot to look at so why bother? But when the new hotel is from the company that has created two of my favorite hotels in Las Vegas, I sit up and take notice.

Station Casinos broke ground last week on their new Aliante Station hotel and casino in the northernmost reaches of Las Vegas. It will be situated on 40 acres of land on the northeast corner of Interstate 215 and Aliante Parkway within the 1,905-acre Aliante master-planned community. That’s about 15 miles due north of Bellagio and about seven miles north of their Texas Station hotel where Austins steakhouse is located for those of you who have been there.

That’s pretty far north and quite a distance from where most Vegas visitors will want to go so why should you care?

Because Station’s Red Rock Resort is currently my favorite hotel in the city and their Green Valley Ranch is not too far behind it on the list.

In fact, the same partnership that brought us Green Valley Ranch is behind the Aliante Station project, a 50/50 deal between Station Casinos and the Greenspun Corporation, owners of several local media outlets.

The $600 million hotel and casino will incorporate many of the very successful lessons learned in the creation of their other properties including the use of a contemporary desert design with modern shapes accented with natural materials such as Jerusalem stone, copper, pewter, onyx, wenge wood, and rocky mist marble.

When it opens in late 2008 it will have 202 guest rooms and suites; ranging in size from approximately 400 square feet to more than 1,500 square feet. 400 additional rooms will be added in a second phase of construction at a later date.

The casino will have all of the usual suspects including slots, table games, a race and sports book, a high-limit gaming area, and a poker room with a bingo hall expected to be added in that second phase.

There will be six restaurants, many of which are well known to anyone who has visited a Stations hotel before. They include the popular Feast Buffet; the 24-hour casual dining of Grand Café; Cabo Cantina featuring Mexican favorites; Tides Oyster Bar with New Orleans cuisine; and a steakhouse and Italian restaurant.

For entertainment purposes there will be a 700-seat showroom, a 16-screen movie theater complex, an arcade with video games, and several bars and lounges. A bowling center and a Kids Quest child care center will be added later.

North Strip Walking Tour Rick Garman

Start and End: Wynn Las Vegas

Approximate Time: 4 hours

Approximate Distance: 4 miles (but only 2 of it walked)

Best Time: Morning

Start at Wynn Las Vegas, which at an estimated $2.7 billion is the most expensive hotel ever built in this country. There’s a lot to look at here including the beautiful gardens near the lobby, the lovely casino, and a Ferrari dealership if you are so inclined. Exit the building through the Esplanade shopping gallery and that will lead you to the northeast corner of The Strip and Sands Avenue.

Take the pedestrian bridge across the street to the west toward the Fashion Show Mall. This 3 million square-foot temple to commerce is the largest in Las Vegas and one of the largest in the United States. It has everything from the usual mall suspects to things you probably won’t find in the one down the road from you. Have someone hide your credit cards.

Exit the mall and turn left to head north on The Strip. The next thing you’ll pass is The Frontier Hotel and Casino, a place totally not worth your time or energy going into unless you just want to say you did. At some point, probably this year, it will be torn down to make way for a proposed multi-billion resort hotel called Montreaux, based on the Swiss town famous for its jazz festival.

Out behind the Frontier you’ll notice a tall gold building under construction as of this writing. That’s the new Trump International (yes, that Trump), a condo-hotel tower due to open in 2008. There will be no casino so even if you happen to be reading this after the place is open, there’s not going to be a lot for you to see or do there.

Keep heading north along The Strip and you’ll pass a big construction zone on your side of the street. That’s where the Stardust used to be located (it’s due to be imploded any day now) and where they are building a $4 billion complex of hotels and casinos called Echelon Place. It’s due to open in 2010.

Across the street you’ll notice The Riviera, one of the last remaining casinos from one of Vegas’ many boom periods. Opened in 1955 with Liberace as the main entertainment, the hotel has gone downhill in recent years and it really isn’t worth the energy to cross the street to see it, again unless you just want to say you did.

Instead a little further north and you’ll find Circus Circus on your side of the street. This one is worth wandering through, if for no other reason than they have live, free circus acts inside above the casino and, for thrill ride aficionados, an indoor amusement park out back. When you come out of the hotel turn left and continue heading north.

There’s lots of construction going on between here and your next stop, but most of it is for condominium or time-share projects so it is of very little interest to the average Vegas visitor.

The big empty lot you see at the corner of Sahara and The Strip is noteworthy. That is the location of the very first hotel/casino to be built on what would eventually become The Strip. It was called El Rancho and opened in 1941, years before The Flamingo did. It burned to the ground in 1960 and the plot of land has been vacant ever since.

Across the street you’ll see The Sahara but don’t go there yet. We’ll get that one on the way back.

Continue north and you’ll pass Bonanza Gifts, billed as the world’s largest souvenir shop. I don’t know who verifies claims like this, but I’m willing to let it pass because if you’re looking for that truly tacky Vegas souvenir (and I mean that in a good way), this is the place to go. From Elvis to aliens, they’ve got it here.

Continue north for another couple of blocks and you’ll reach the pinnacle of your walking tour in more ways that one with The Stratosphere. You can’t miss it; it’s that 1,000 foot tower looming over everything. Go inside and take a ride up to the top to see just how far you’ve walked and if you’re feeling brave take a trip on one of the extreme thrill rides.

When you come back down head back the way you came, going a couple of blocks south back to The Sahara. This is another hotel that isn’t much to look at these days although if you’re a fan of NASCAR, they do have a themed café and a virtual reality ride that puts you behind the wheel of a stock car so that’s kind of cool.

Follow the signs for the monorail (or the buffet, whichever is more obvious) and you’ll go out behind the hotel to the Las Vegas Monorail stop. I recommend this rather than walking all the way back just because it’s easier and I’m a lazy slob.

You could stop at the Las Vegas Hilton on your way but that’s not officially part of the North Strip so I’m not going to include it here.

You want to get off at the Las Vegas Convention Center stop (the next one past the Las Vegas Hilton) and go across the street to the southwest corner of Desert Inn and Paradise Road. You’ll see a red awning over a bus stop. This is where buses will come pick you up to take you back to Wynn Las Vegas.

RIVIERA SECURITY PATCH COLLECTION
PROVIDES UNIQUE PHOTO OP

Whether big or small, there are hundreds of photo ops (opportunities) available around every  corner in Las Vegas.  The Mirage has its volcano; Caesars and the Bellagio have dancing fountains; and even the Riviera Hotel and Casino boasts its famous backside bronze "Crazy Girls" statue, alongside the "La Cage" glass mannequin display on The Strip.  All of these, and more attractions, provide unique backdrops for souvenir photos.

On a much smaller scale, but just as meaningful to the visitor from Oshkosh, Akron, Fort Lee, New Jersey, or Watertown, New York, are the hundreds of police badges displayed at the Riviera Hotel and Casino.  Word is out you can also snap a photograph of yourself pointing to police badges from your home state, and in some cases, your hometown, another "only in Vegas-type" souvenir.

Riviera Security Officer and Armorer* Walt Dickerson had no idea when he was hired in 1988, one day he'd be head caretaker of the Riviera's Police Patch Exhibit, displayed on the walls near the Riviera's World's Fare Buffet entrance.  The rare photo opportunity had been a well-kept secret, up until now.

From Butte, Montana, Officer Dickerson explained, "One afternoon in 1996, a French emblem from the Paris Police appeared on my desk.  I pinned it to an 8'x 4' plywood board on my office wall and thought little more about it.  Other team members noticed the colorful fabric alone and little by little, the patches started steamrolling in and the board was becoming quite full.

"We had to move the board outside and enclosed it in a locked case.  If there were police conventions or Police Olympics at the Riv or just in town, men and women would drop off patches from where they were from.  I was always adding patches, arranging them alphabetically or by putting them in geographical regions."

"Presently we have 505 badges.  Most are from California, Michigan and Florida.  We have none, for some odd reason, from North or South Dakota.  We have about 50 from all over the world.  They are over-crowding two cases and a third case will be needed soon.

"Most every day, you can find visitors staring intensely at the display, trying to find their hometown patch.   When they find it, it's like the same person had directed them all, they point to the emblem and snap a lot of pictures.

"We even trade our Riviera patches with visiting officers.  There is no end to this.  It's a great exhibit.  We are proud it's here," Dickerson concluded.

You can bring your camera and visit the Riviera Hotel and Casino Security Patch Display, 24/7, at 2901 Las Vegas Boulevard South.  The Riviera is at (702) 734-5110, or click on www.rivierahotel.com.

Las Vegas: City of Culture
Article by:Emeri Krawczyk

Sitting at an outdoor cafe in front of the Eiffel Tower, my beau and I sipped big, ruby glasses of French wine while we waited for our classic steak au poivres with pommes frites to arrive. Our day of touring had left us ravenous.

We marveled at breathtaking fountains across the way and at the late-night tourists still crowding the streets. Like Americans in Paris, we were, in fact, Americans in Paris in Las Vegas.

Let’s get one thing straight: I had no desire to go to Las Vegas. As far as I was concerned, the big buffet-blinged-out-bacchanalian city had nothing to interest this museum- going, history-loving and foodie tourist.

If I was a betting gal, I’d be broke. Best not to judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a city by its glittery, cheesy and sometimes tawdry reputation.

Chuck Rounds' Las Vegas Entertainment News
April 2007

April is one of the best months of the year…while we get some occasional April showers; we usually have some of the best weather of the year.  Most of the big new shows have opened and are settling in nicely, there is a healthy convention calendar, and all of the pools have been opened at all of the resorts.  The bikini is back, and scantily clad women are enjoying the brilliant sunlight and getting a start on their summer tans—spring breakers are everywhere, Easter is just around the corner, and the entertainment is great.

The world is still in flux.  We have just passed the four-year mark on the war on terrorism in Iraq…four years…and there seems to be no end in sight.  People seem to be going about their normal routines, and the daily fear of terrorism has waned back to almost non-existence.  As I watch the nightly news and read the papers, though, it seems as if soldiers are still dying everyday—three soldiers here, four more there, seven over the weekend…another attack and another and another…the reason for our being there continues to get more and more blurry.  Is our world truly safer because of our involvement in Iraq?  …But I digress…

The Best of Las Vegas Awards have just come out.  There are usually two winners in each category—one chosen by the readers and one chosen by the staff of our city's daily paper.  "Mystere" and "Love" were chosen as the best production shows, Celine Dion and Prince as the best all-around performers, Rita Rudner and Triumph the insult comedy dog as best comedians, and Lance Burton and Mac King as best magicians.  Best showgirls went to "Jubilee!" and "Le Femme," best singer went to Celine Dion and Clint Holmes, best male strip show went to "Chippendale's" and "Thunder From Down Under," best bargain show went to Mac King and "Le Reve," and the best choreography went to ""Hairspray" and "Celine Dion: A New Day."
Good picks, but…I think the best production show is "Le Reve."  George Wallace should be included in the best comedian category.  Penn & Teller certainly deserve a nod as best magicians, "Folies Bergere has some of the best showgirls, Barry Manilow is one of the best singers, and "The Fashionistas" should have taken best choreography.  There should also be a category for best small show…that would be a tougher category to choose a winner in.  Top nods should go to "Menopause," "V," and "Forever Plaid."

There was another feather in the cap for entertainers, as the Best Cocktail service went to the Bevertainers at the Rio for the second year in a row.  These servers are entertainers that get up during their shifts and sing and dance for patrons in the casino.  Their presence certainly changes the face of cocktail service in our town.

And speaking of "Forever Plaid," it has just closed its doors at the Gold Coast.  It is a show that will truly be missed.  I do hope to see it return (maybe in a slightly different form) in the future.  Comic Legend, Marty Allen will be coming into the room in the middle of the month.  He's 85 and still going strong.

The Vegas Grand Prix is running its inaugural race Apr 6th to 8th.  The Vegas Grand Prix is a three-day festival of speed, which will include concerts by superstar artists, extreme sports demonstrations, a celebrity poker tournament and, of course, numerous automobile races through the streets of downtown Las Vegas including the 2007 season opener of the Champ Car World Series.

The Vegas Grand Prix will take place in a downtown Las Vegas circuit, which will be a 2.44-mile, 12-turn temporary street circuit. The circuit will encompass a route that circumnavigates World Market Center, Fremont Street and the downtown casinos.
It is scheduled to be the season opening event for the 2007 Champ Car World Series.  All of the Downtown areas will be a complete mess during this event—severe street closures and detours await all that want to venture to this event.  It's the first time it's ever been done here…and they will certainly learn a lot for future events.

One of my long time favorite shows, The Scintas, will be closing its doors at the Sahara in the middle of May.  The Scintas have been a cornerstone group in Las Vegas for about seven years.  They have been good for the industry and good citizens of Las Vegas.  It will be a shame to see them go.  They will be in Atlantic City for two-weeks after they close down here, but no word of them after that.

Replacing them at the Sahara will be "Matsuri," the number one show in Japan.  The "muscle musical" played for a short run at the Riviera last year.  It is an amazing production that needs to be seen.

And the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) hits Las Vegas this month.  It is the largest gathering in the country.  Around 150,000 people are expected to attend, and it will be filled with celebrities and attractions.

The Clark County Fair & Rodeo is at Clark County Fairgrounds Apr 12th to 15th.  The Fair had its beginning back in 1965. Known as the Moapa Valley Fair, it was held at the Overton Community Center. Compared to the present day fair, this first fair was small in size. Nevertheless, it had all the flavor and elements of a good old county fair. From this simple beginning, the Moapa Valley Fair became an annual event. Each year new attractions were added, such as a carnival midway, junior livestock show, and a rodeo.
Throughout the seventies and early eighties, the fair took place at various locations in the community such as the local park, churches and schools. Each location lacked some key elements necessary to house the ever growing and popular fair.  In 1997 due to the ever so popular Rodeo, the fair once again changed its name. Now known as the Clark County Fair & Rodeo over 70,000 patrons come to the fair every spring.  It has been the combined work and efforts of many volunteers that have developed and managed the Fair and successfully produced an old-fashioned, family oriented fair for so many people to enjoy. With a part time staff of four, and over 500 volunteers working together, we pledge to continue to bring this flavor and fun to each and every Fair!

Prince is flaky…what can you say?  He took control of the showroom at the Rio a few months ago and performs there on Fridays and Saturdays.  He seemed to get tired of it quickly and announced his departure at the end of March…well; he's decided to stay for one more month.  The man is very talented…but he is a flake—how many names has he gone through?

"Spamalot" has opened to great reviews at the Wynn.

"Le Reve" makes its return to the entertainment scene after having undergone a major overhaul.  I look forward to seeing it again.

"Stomp Out Loud" has opened at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood.

Roseanne Barr continues to play her "All You Can Eat Comedy Tour" at New York-New York through the end of the month.

Delisco has just released his new self-titled CD.  Delisco won the reality show competition, "The Entertainer" and played the Hilton for a short while.  He's extremely talented, and the CD is great.  It is available at www.delisco.com.

Matt Dusk is also releasing a CD.

The Shops In Desert Passage At The Aladdin Becomes Miracle Mile Shops

The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin will begin operating as Miracle Mile Shops in May 2007.

With rapidly advancing exterior and interior reconstruction throughout the center, Boulevard Invest, the joint venture of Tri Star Capital and RFR Holding, and owners of The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin, are proud to celebrate the shopping center’s new name: Miracle Mile Shops.

Miracle Mile Shops, named in part to promote the 1.2 miles of retail space the mall covers, signals the center’s transformation to a sleeker, more urbanized and contemporary space. The multi-million dollar makeover focuses on de-theming the original design for its transition into a more streamlined, contemporary look.  The renovation is a move to create synergy with the over $1 billion renovation and re-branding of the Aladdin Resort & Casino into the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Furthermore, the “Miracle Mile” name, synonymous with retail districts throughout the country, conveys a shopping environment and also alludes to the “miracles” that can happen in the adjoining casino.

The Miracle Mile name also serves to reflect the abundance of new, brand-name and internationally recognized retailers that have acquired retail space inside the center. Miracle Mile Shops has already welcomed the funky, trendy men’s and women’s clothes, accessories and home décor of Urban Outfitters, the chic British men’s and women’s wear of Ben Sherman, the world’s leading outdoor sports lifestyle company, Quiksilver, the all-encompassing Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex and the “churrasco”-style Brazilian restaurant, Pampas Churrascaria.  Miracle Mile Shops will soon welcome the affordable fashions of H&M, Polynesian-fusion, food and fun at Trader Vic’s restaurant, the trendy women’s fashions of Marciano, authentic Greek cuisine at Taverna Opa and Hawaiian Tropic Zone, a dining and nightlife destination.

“Recent renovations and newly opened retailers such as Ben Sherman and Urban Outfitters are small signs of things to come as the center continues to transform while operating under the new name,” said Miracle Mile Shops co-owner, David Edelstein of Tri Star Capital. “Miracle Mile Shops is fast becoming the most trendsetting shopping center on the Las Vegas Strip and we are confident our new look and feel will resonate with shoppers and retailers.”

The designers and architects at Gensler of Nevada and Studio B Design have been charged with the task of making over the center’s interior and creating an overall user-friendly environment. Enhancements currently underway include new, brighter interior lighting, streamlined and modernized storefronts and kiosks and a completely de-themed interior.  Gensler of Nevada and Studio B Design have also designed a three-story sculptural facade element, which identifies the entry to the mall.

Renovations to the center’s exterior, led by the team at The Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas, are making the mall more contemporary, accessible and user-friendly. Their design, currently under construction, includes adding people movers for better access into the shops, a backlit sidewalk water feature and state-of-the-art LED video offering continuous streaming imagery. Additionally, many of the mall's entrances and existing retail locations on the facade have already been made over with floor-to-ceiling glass vestibule doors and storefronts.  A new patio and terrace is also being built to extend out to the sidewalk and invite potential customers inside.

From:"The Vegas Eye"

Real World Returns

The Eye has confirmed that the cast of MTV’s reality hit The Real World, will be making a return appearance to Sin City and the Palms Resort to celebrate the five year reunion of the Real World: Las Vegas. This is a milestone in terms of not only MTV and the Real World franchise, but the role the show has had in the success of the Palms Resort, and also its importance to Las Vegas and in reality television history. Five years ago, the Real World brought seven strangers to Las Vegas, set them up with cushy jobs at Rain Nightclub and gave them a penthouse suite to reside in. The brilliance as far as a branding and marketing concept cannot be questioned; it planted the Palms and Rain Nightclub brands on the consciousness of every college student in the country and five years later, the Palms is still enjoying the ride. It was also the first reality television show to shoot in Las Vegas. Its ratings went through the roof and reality show after reality show has followed suit resulting in tremendous publicity for our city. “The Real World truly helped open the doors for everything that followed,” Palms Resort’s reigning prince, Jon Gray told the Eye, “It showed everything that Vegas had to offer, especially the nightlife.” The sneaker-sporting executive confirmed that in mid-April, all seven participants would be returning to property and would be, once again, taking up residence in the infamous Real World Suite, while shooting. “They’re going to shoot six episodes and will be on property for about three weeks,” Gray continued, “I don’t think they have all seen each other in years so it should be a lot of fun, we’re extremely excited to have them back on property.” It seems as though the general direction of the show is still in the works as Palms and MTV executives continue to trade ideas back and forth, however, Gray is hopeful that the public will be able to play a larger role in the reunion edition, “I’m hoping that the public will be more involved this time around, we’re working on special events and stuff that would give people the opportunity to meet the cast and hang out with them.” Something tells us that between Gray and N9NE Group marketing man, Mike ‘The Funkler’ Fuller, they’ll come up with something great!

Jacko Backo?
Last week we broke a story that the ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson, and MGM Mirage executives were planning a very special, very exclusive concert, dinner and meet and greet that would take place at the Luxor in early June. Within moments of our breaking story, The Vegas Eye was on the front page of hit-mongering website TMZ as well as media outlets as wide reaching as E Television Network and CNN. Local gossip pitchman Norm Clarke also got into the mix, running denials from ‘Papa Joe’ Jackson and representatives from MGM Mirage. The story came about when a source emailed us a copy of an invitation that had been designed for MGM Mirage, apparently one of several that were outsourced, that included an email RSVP link to Luxor event coordinator, Arial Martinez. It wasn’t the only Vegas/Jackson rumor to be running rampant last week as reports of a 50-foot, laser-firing statue of himself that Jackson wanted constructed in the desert as well as conflicting reports of a Jacko hospitalization also went world-wide. As fans of the ‘King of Pop’ around the globe await to see if Jackson does indeed land a permanent or even semi-permanent gig in Las Vegas, the likelihood of it happening seems to ebb and flow with Jackson’s interest. It would seem reasonable that no current venue in the Luxor (even the under-renovation Luxor Theatre) could host a star of Jackson’s caliber on a regular basis, however, imagine the impact to the global whale population that MGM Mirage could have hosting a private and exclusive Jacko concert for their legions of high-rollers. The Luxor “has nothing scheduled with Michael Jackson on this or any other date,” MGM Mirage’s PR maven Jenn Michaels told Clarke last week, which clearly doesn’t state that they weren’t attempting to land it. In the past, on the rare occasion when we ran incorrect or inaccurate information regarding an MGM Mirage property, they have always been quick to reach out with corrections, as of today, no call has been placed to our offices. As always, we’ll leave it to the reader to decide.

Humpty Dumpty Never Tasted So Good

Last week Las Vegas saw the opening of its newest culinary masterpiece when celebrity chef David Burke opened his self named David Burke Las Vegas in The Venetian’s Restaurant Row in the footprint previously occupied by Chinese restaurant, Royal Star. We call it a masterpiece not because of behemoth tasting menus, an outrageous design layout or a four figure check average; in fact, we call it masterpiece because it offers none of those things. Instead, Burke and his team have found a spectacular sweet spot between haute cuisine hideaways like Restaurant Guy Savoy (Caesars Palace) and Joel Robuchon at The Mansion (MGM Grand) and the ultra hot see-and-be-seen restaurants like FIX (Bellagio) and Social House (T.I.) that put less of a focus on the food (which is still great) and more of a focus on the scene. Burke seamlessly settles in the middle with a modern American menu of gourmet fare that will have you craving for more, with fun and playful presentations at a price point that won’t scare away the masses. Set in a beautifully open restaurant centered with a cascading water feature, the dining room provides a formal setting without stuffiness or pretention. Throughout the restaurant reside Burke’s signature symbol; eggs, eggs and more eggs, think humpy dumpty style, eggs teetering so close to the edge over the bar, along the entranceway, even an oddly hot female egg in the wine cellar. It’s this perfect example of the chef’s light hearted and casual approach to gourmet dining, made even more perfect because of the chef’s affable personality and outgoing sense of humor, that crosses over onto his menu. Take the appetizer Burke in a Box ($35), the chefs version of a Japanese bento box that offers guests a tasting of five different dishes, each selected by the chef daily to ensure the selections are rotated through. The night we stopped by it included the delectable green pea flan that is an absolute must-try. Other highlights from the menu, that will take several visits to fully discover, have to include the Angry Lobster ($24) which features a pound and 1/3 lobster sawed in-shell with a band saw, covered in angry flour (a mixture of flour, paprika, chili pepper and cayenne) and pan baked to create a crispy texture which is then finished with pan sauce, chili oil, basil, lemon zest, lemon juice, shallots, garlic and red chili flakes before being furiously served on a bed of nails, the result is quite simply delicious. It’s not the only lobster dish to stand out however as the Lobster Steak ($45) is surprisingly creative considering it’s a combination of two of the best selling dishes in Las Vegas, filet mignon and lobster. This time, the same size lobster is pounded down and molded into the shape of a filet mignon served with a bird’s nest of shoestring curry fries. Don’t worry, if you’re dead-set on steak, Burke has you covered with his signature Creekstone Rib eye ($48) that will leave even the hungriest carnivore satisfied. And please, please, please leave room for dessert, the Lollipop Tree ($18) is a great example of the fun, creative dishes that help end any meal at David Burke Las Vegas right.

The management team that has been tapped by Burke to oversee the outlet is a great mix of local talent interjected with well-steeped, new blood to Las Vegas. Running front-of-the-house operations is the equally smart and stunning Marisa Scarpulla who assumes the position of general manager and managing partner. Foodies will remember Scarpulla from N9NE Steakhouse where she also served in a similar post, helping to make N9NE one of the most successful steakhouses in the city. Serving under Scarpulla is another operator who is continuing his progression in the business in Young ‘The Legend’ Lee. The keen Lee makes the move to David Burke after serving with the Innovative Dining Group for nearly two years, most of which was spent at their Sushi Roku outlet in the Forum Shops Mall. ‘The Legend’ is another in a long line of operational talent that cut his teeth at the MGM Grand in the earlier part of the decade before moving on to bigger successes. Other members of the management team include Mary Bright and Gene Campbell, out of New York City, who is serving as the restaurants sommelier/manager. Back in the kitchen, Burke reached out to Los Angeles where he selected Troy Thompson to serve as chef de cuisine; he had previously run the kitchen at the Ritz Carlton eatery, Journey. Helping to ensure that his high standards are maintained when he is not around, Burke brought sous chef Ben Huselton to Las Vegas with him. Huselton had served under Burke at David and Donatella, the chef’s uber-popular NYC eatery. With a talented staff running the show and phenomenal fare coming out of the kitchen, David Burke Las Vegas is definitely worth checking out- just don’t knock Humpty Dumpty of the wall!

Wynn Gets Spammed
Who has more love for their readers than us? Last week we offered hundreds of industry locals an exclusive chance to head down to Wynn Las VegasVegas to check out a special preview performance of Spamalot, the newest Broadway transfer to land in Las Vegas and the show handpicked by Wynn to replace the brilliant but misunderstood puppet adventure, Avenue Q. As you would imagine, Monty Python’s Spamalot is an on-stage adaption of the cult classic flick Monty Python and the Holy Grail which was “lovingly ripped off” by original troupe member and part of the Holy Grail writing team, Eric Idle. If you haven’t seen ‘Grail’, we don’t know what to tell you other than the story loosely follows King Arthur and his knights as they search for the Holy Grail. In the on-stage production, revered movie scenes remain including the formidable black knight, the knights who say Ni and, of course, the lewd-mouthed French guards who receive a loud cheer when they take the stage. Mixed in are new scenes and songs, which help move the story-line along and keep the wheels from falling off all together. While classic movie scenes being played out live and on-stage wet the entertainment palate, Spamalot is at its best when it strays from its on-screen brother with songs like ‘You Won’t Succeed on Broadway’ and ‘His Name is Lancelot’ which bring down the house in laughter and applause. The lead role of King Arthur is played brilliantly by John O’Hurley, who is most certainly best remembered for his role as the urban sombrero pitchman J. Peterman in the standard of sitcom television, Seinfeld. Like with Peterman, O’Hurley is at his best with a straight-face and arrogant innocence that allows the other players in the cast to hit solid triples, but commands such presence that he inadvertently saves the homeruns for himself. In the end, the movie plot is left behind, in part, so the cast can deliver an ending, something the movie doesn’t really have. At the end of the day, where Avenue Q took itself far too seriously, Spamalot playfully and endlessly pokes fun at itself until you can’t help but laugh. Perhaps that’s why Las Vegas has rejected other Tony-winning Broadway hits like Avenue Q and Hairspray. While these productions may have aspired to transform the Strip into “Broadway-West” Spamalot rejoices in the differences of Las Vegas and celebrates them. For all these reasons, we are highly recommending you go check out Spamalot, and live it up on the brighter side of life!

Bare makes splash in pool scene
By Len Butcher

It's that time of year again here in Las Vegas. The weather is warming up (actually we've already set some heat records) and that means POOL TIME! Almost every Strip hotel has a great pool area with special recognition to Mandalay Bay, Caesars Palace, Flamingo and the Tropicana (all of these are my favorites). Now, however, comes the newest entry in town, located at The Mirage, and with a name that screams Sin City. I'm talking about Bare, which is being called "an exclusive adult alternative to the typical Las Vegas pool experience" by the Light Group, the company that operates it.

It opened mid-March and will stay that way through October 15. Here's what Scott Sibella, president of The Mirage, had to say: "The Light Group set the standard on the Strip for superior service. At Bare, each guest will enjoy world-class hospitality and an experience that is not only pleasurable but also unforgettable." And what he's talking about is the ultimate in poolside pampering. Think ultra-VIP service, DJ-spun music and topless bathing. Hey, the French Riviera has nothing on Las Vegas.

There are two luxury dipping pools to keep you cool, with private Daybeds and Boat Beds as well as chaise lounges that put you right in the middle of all the action. If you do rent a Daybed or Boat Bed, you will be served exclusive, specially-made pitchers to keep your drinks ice cold and filled with pre-mixed cocktails like Mojitos, Bloody Marys and Sangria.

And women will love this. Chilled cucumbers to soothe the eyes; iced towels, rolled and chilled in flavored water; exotic frozen fruit, skewered for easy snacking; icy popsicles; mini fruit smoothies, served in individual shot glasses; and Evian misting bottles, super-chilled and ready to spritz. What more could you ask for?

Bare is open Thursdays through Mondays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission charge Thursday and Monday: $10 for women, $30 for men. Friday, Saturday and Sunday: $20 for women and $40 for men. Hmmm…..a little sexist, don't you think, but then the guys get to see beautiful women lying around topless, so I guess it evens out.

For more info, visit www.barepool.com or call (702) 791-7442. For private events, contact Maggie Garcia at (702) 693-8300 (ext. 270).

Another newcomer to the pool scene is Tao Beach at the Venetian where you can expect an over-the-top experience. For example, after nightfall, guests will find themselves in an open-air nightclub featuring a floating dance floor and four 14-foot fire columns. More on this later.
