LAS VEGAS MONORAIL: System's president sees bright future.
Line might be extended to McCarran by 2011.
By Ed Vogel/Las Vegas Review Journal
The future of the Las Vegas Monorail is "very bright" and includes possibly extending the line to McCarran International Airport by 2011, the company's president said Tuesday.
Curtis Myles told the Assembly Transportation Committee that monorail farebox revenues rose last year. The company has revenue available to pay its operating and maintenance costs and debt through 2010, he added.
Myles, however, made no mention of the fact that daily ridership on the monorail in 2006 dropped to 19,219, down 31.7 percent from the normal daily ridership of 28,122 in 2005. The base one-way fare was increased to $5, up from $3, in December 2005.

Aladdin Planet Hollywood Transformation to Be Completed by October
For what seems like an eternity, the transformation of the cursed Aladdin Hotel & Casino into the gleaming and shiny (and still-cursed) Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino will apparently be completed in October 2007. We've heard this all before, so don't start booking your rooms quite yet. We continue to suggest that all VT readers take a pause on staying at Aladdin until the dust has settled.
It does look, however, that the end may actually be in sight. The Review-Journal conducted an interview with A/PH honcho Robert Earl, wherein he says that progress has been slow, but they've invested must more money into the property than originally anticipated. The description of the strip frontage is semi-interesting.
The large desert-stonelike features topped by an Arabian-style dome are being
pulled down to be replaced by a "Times Squarelike" front with large light-emitting
diode screens and bright colors to make the property more inviting.
"By the middle of this year, you'll never know the Aladdin existed," said Earl, adding
that the dome that sat above the Aladdin sign was removed Thursday.
"That 700-foot run all along the front will all glow and change colors and show
images," Earl said of the new plaza. "It will be a fantastic billboard."
A new front entrance on the Strip property's northern end has already opened while
construction on the front continues. Retail tenants and restaurants are being added
along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Steve's Las Vegas Quickies
A new downtown hangout that could use more human participation is Brass, the new nightclub atop Hennessey's Tavern at Fremont Street and Las Vegas Boulevard. Not much action there on Friday, when Fremont Street itself was buzzing with activity.
Stop me if you've heard this one: A first-rate Vegas production plays to a half-full theater. In this case it was "The Producers" on Sunday night at Paris Las Vegas. Hoops fans evidently are not theater-goers, thus "Producers" producers say they are not concerned.
A restaurant I predict will become a Vegas hot spot (hot! I tell you) opened Friday at the Rio. That's the Italian restaurant Cafe Martorano, which occupies the space vacated by Rosemary's. No reservations are taken at the popular South Florida Italian restaurant owned by Steve Martorano. Martorano refers to himself as a "cook" rather than "chef" and favors a lively atmosphere (with up-tempo music and a state-of-the-art sound system) at his restaurants.

Things that go bump in the night: "Stomp Out Loud" - the new show from "Stomp" creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas - opens March 24 for previews at the new 1,500-seat, $28 million Aladdin/Planet Hollywood showroom. Preview tickets range from $50 to $110 and go on sale March 1. The show will officially open in April.

"Legends in Concert" Elvis impersonator Matt Lewis got lots of publicity last month: his picture graced the cover of two glossy magazines. MIKE WEATHERFORD: 'Jersey Boys' may land on Strip.
The future of the Broadway-in-Vegas trend may not rely on the fate of "The Producers" and "Monty Python's Spamalot." "Jersey Boys" is likely to open later this year in the Palazzo Tower addition to The Venetian, no matter how the two current titles fare.
The Broadway hit is slated for a sit-down run in a new theater, part of the tower scheduled to come on line just north of The Venetian sometime in the fall.

YEAR OF THE BOAR
Here's something you don't want to miss. Bellagio is honoring the Chinese Year of the Boar in its Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, one of my favorite places to visit and to take people from out of town. The Gardens makes five changes each year, four for the changing of the seasons and one for the Chinese New Year. This year you'll find an animated swine playfully snorting and wiggling its nose and ears, while just steps away, an 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Wealth and Fortune smiles benevolently from atop a gleaming pile of golden coins. In the west garden, a 40-foot tall, six-tier pagoda with beautifully sculpted details finished in gold leaf represents a mountain of good 'chi.' The ancient art of Feng Shui can be found in practice throughout this dramatic exhibit — from gentle waterfalls which ensure the flow of positive energy, to tranquil ponds filled with Koi, a symbol of good luck and everlasting fortune. The display will be there until March 3.

NORM: Prince chooses life on road over Rio
Prince's run at the Rio might be a brief one. Alicia Jacobs, entertainment reporter at KVBC-TV, Channel 3, reported Sunday that Prince will end his Rio deal on March 31.
Jacobs said Prince, who took over the Club Rio showroom in November, is going on tour to promote his latest CD. But a 3121 rep said the show is indefinite, and "there's not a confirmed end date as of yet."
Perhaps most revealing, however, was the group of uber entertainment executives who attended a private Prince performance about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, after his main show at his 3121 club.
Among 30 guests in a small backroom were ABC entertainment honcho David Saltz; Apple Records boss Jonathan Clyde, who produced most of Usher's major hits, and Siegfried & Roy's longtime manager, Bernie Yuman.
Saltz is reportedly working on a huge Beatles-related Prince project. Prince spent most of the private concert singing arrangements of Beatles songs.
Connect the dots.

Wyrick's dream unfolding
Magician's entertainment complex at Aladdin finally becomes reality.
By Jerry Fink Las Vegas Sun.
"Years in the making! A cast of thousands!"
Teaser for a movie epic?
Or the hype for magician Steve Wyrick's new entertainment complex at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood?
Actually it only seemed liked the $35 million venue was years in the making. It took about 15 months to build.
And the core of its cast is just three performers - Wyrick, singer Martin Nievera and puppeteer Ronn Lucas. Plus, a rotating roster of stand-up comedians will take center stage on Friday nights.
Still, antsy fans were beginning to wonder if it would ever open.

Atronic. 3 spins. 86-90%.
You receive two chances at the top prize of at least $1 million with this game. First, bet the max coins or get into the Jackpot Re-Spin zone, either of which may result in five ‘eMillions’ symbols and a big hit.
If three or four ‘eMillions’ are displayed on a line, the other reels will re-spin for the top prize.
This multiline game also offers free spins and multipliers to add to the excitement.
If a Free Game Coin lands on the first reel, there are two free games added.
Whereas, if a Multiplier Coin appears on the fifth reel during a free spin, the multiplier value is raised by one to 3X, 4X, etc.
The butterfly symbol is wild and 3 or more golden mask scattered symbols get you a free spin for free games that double jackpots.
This is more than an African adventure as there are extra hits and bonuses to explore.

The next step with the bonus is to choose map areas to determine the number of times the oil derrick will pump for crude resulting in mounting credits. Should you exceed a certain amount of credits, a new bonus round is set into action.
Secondly, there are other wild symbols and scatter pays to raise your credits along with the big payoff reserved for five Cash for Crude symbols.

Top 7 Places for a Gastronomic Adventure through Las Vegas
By Zeke Quezeda
Las Vegas offers so many great choices when it comes to dining that the best way to cover all your bases is to try as many restaurants as you can in the smallest time possible. Try these restaurants for a drink, an appetizer or an entire meal. Don’t start counting calories either, live it up and have seven meals in a day. Can you possibly eat at seven restaurants in one day? Try it!
1) Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace Las Vegas
In Las Vegas you have to go to at least one celebrity chef owned restaurant so why not make it the Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace. If you fit it in at lunch time you will easily be able to squeeze in another restaurant by 3 in the afternoon. Bobby Flay does some mean Tamales, so have a couple and a drink before you move on to your next restaurant.

4) Isla Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar at Treasure Island
Sure four meals in a small amount of time can be excessive but in Las Vegas you create your own fun. Take a short walk from the Flamingo over to the TI and have one Margarita and a couple of tacos at Isla. Stay away from the chips and salsa because that could ruin your chances at 3 more menus before the day is over.

5) Red 8 Asian Bistro in the Wynn Las Vegas
As the sun starts setting on your day, your epic battle to try as many restaurants in a day will deliver you to some Southeast Asian cuisine at Red 8 Asian Bistro. That's entertainment.
Vegas had little say in who played the big shows.
By Ed Koch Las Vegas Sun.
Las Vegas tourism officials played only a small role in deciding which entertainers would showcase the city to more than 200 countries that televised Sunday's NBA All-Star Game.
The team responsible for putting together the dazzling pregame and half-time entertainment - and, oh yeah, the game - was the NBA itself.
NBA spokesman Matt Bourne said a "well-seasoned" group of entertainment experts working for the association produced the event. And the premier pro basketball league paid the big-name local headliners nothing, as is the NBA's tradition for its star-studded event.
"The entertainment we use supplements the game," Bourne said. "It is used to enlarge the main event. The game is the focus."

John Katsilometes on who 'La Cage' star Marino might turn to when he needs a cup of sugar.
I 'd love to attend this homeowners association meeting: On one end of a west Las Vegas neighborhood is Michael Jackson. On the other is Frank Marino.
"It's the Queen of Las Vegas on one corner and the King of Pop on the other," Marino, the Joan Rivers impersonator and longtime star of "An Evening at La Cage" at the Riviera, said Monday morning. "I don't know if the property values will go up or down."
The oft-reported Jackson home is a 16,000-square-foot dwelling, which he leases from San Francisco real estate magnate Luke Brugnara. It sits just two houses away from a 1.5-acre plot owned by Marino (which is not hard to find, as a sign reading "Future homesite of Frank Marino" has been placed on the property).
Marino said he was not aware of his famous neighbor until a reporter called a couple of weeks ago to tell him about the man on the corner. But Marino was aware of his other famous neighbor, Gary Payton, whose home sits between Marino's plot and Jackson's haunt.
"He's a basketball player or something," Marino said. "I don't know the players. But if you ask me about fashion, that I know."

Also, Las Vegas sports talk host Steve Cofield, citing his own sources, reported that Jones' group incited a commotion after someone threw large amounts of money into the crowd. Two security guards were among the injured, said Cofield, a co-host on "The Wise Guys" on Fox Sports Radio 1460.

GANS OPEN TO OPTIONS
Mirage headliner Danny Gans is leaving his options open, and that includes a reunion with Steve Wynn.
With his contract up in two years, Gans, who has been at The Mirage since 2000, said Monday he's "open to whatever's out there, and I know Steve Wynn is across the street, and I'm not closed to that possibility."
Gans, who was chosen to sing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, said he continues to have an excellent relationship with The Mirage, but he's weighing a number offers, including TV and film opportunities.
Gans said he had planned to incorporate the voices of a number of legendary Las Vegas entertainers during the national anthem. "I had worked it up and actually sang it over the phone for the producers," Gans said.
Gans' dream team included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Ray Charles and Tom Jones.
But with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the NBA preferred he play it straight and asked him to sing in his own voice, he said.

Brett's Vegas Views By Jackie Brett
It's no secret that Broadway shows struggle to be successful on the famed Las Vegas Strip, but "Mamma Mia!" at Mandalay Bay has made it four years so it's not impossible. "The Producers" at Paris Las Vegas may prove to be the exception because it is the most awarded show in Broadway history and a musical comedy with David Hasselhoff, who is listed as the "Most Watched TV Star in the World" by the "Guinness Book of World Records."
In true Las Vegas fashion, the Mel Brooks musical comedy has been cut down to a fast-paced 90-minute production. The characters are all over-the-top which is a complement to the one-of-kind Las Vegas. The show is just plain fun with a superb cast and TV's 6-foot-6 towering icon Hasselhoff in drag is a great sight gag. Enjoy!
The $35 million Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex at the Desert Passage inside the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood has finally opened after many delays. The 33,000 square-foot, four-level facility houses the 500-seat Steve Wyrick Theatre, a magic shop, and TRIQ Ultra Lounge.
On Friday and Saturday nights, the entire complex will be transformed into a four-level nightclub with the theater stage serving as a dance floor for the TRIQ Ultra Lounge. There will be free access to Steve Wyrick show attendees, and TRIQ will have numerous VIP tables that each showcase a personal stripper pole and plush lounge sectioned seating with the best views of the action on the floor. TRIQ Ultra Lounge features an ultra-modern atmosphere with a rich chocolate and warm red dec¢r, plush Italian furniture and cracked glass backlight. Located on the first floor of the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex, the trendy and contemporary lounge offers a nightly DJ spinning an eclectic mix as well as traditional house tracks. The lounge is open Sunday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Cover charge is $20.
Illusionist Steve Wyrick has opened his new show "Steve Wyrick: Real Magic," with preview performances running until March 16 inside the new Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex at the Aladdin/Planet. During previews, tickets are $59.95 and $79.95, call 702-777-WYRICK (9974).
The total production costs for the show are more than $20 million dollars. Wyrick began his Las Vegas career at the Lady Luck downtown more than a decade ago before moving to the Sahara and then on to the Aladdin. Wyrick's shows are at 7 and 9 p.m. nightly except Friday.
The provocative new adult show, "X" Burlesque opened this week at the Flamingo in the intimate 180-seat Flamingo Cabaret. The show allows audiences to get up close and personal with the six beautiful and talented female dancers. Show times are Monday-Friday at 10 p.m. Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at midnight. Tickets are $44.95 and $55.95, call702-733-3333 or 800-221-7299.
The sexy revue combines imaginative choreography with some outrageous props including bungees, bathtubs and beds. The 90-minute production has seductive scenes ranging from sensual ballet-inspired numbers to funky and energetic acrobatic routines. The variety of styles allows each dancer to showcase her own distinctive talents.
Erotic imagery pushing the envelope includes "Pharaoh Fawcet" with the girls performing a steamy belly dance to the Pussycat Dolls' dance hit "Buttons," and a 1960s-reminiscent "Sharon Delove," set to The Raconteurs' "My Baby's on the Level," features a gorgeous girl in nothing but go-go boots and body paint.
In partnership with SONY Pictures, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas has introduced a new interactive wax attraction at its box office entrance of actor Nicolas Cage in his "Johnny Blaze" role from the new SONY release, "Ghost Rider," which premiered last Friday, Feb. 16, in theaters nationwide.
Cage's wax figure is outfitted in his studded, black leather riding suit from the film and is standing next to the original Hell Cycle custom chopper which the actor deftly wields in the movie. The Hell Cycle is 11 « feet long and weighs 500 pounds. Like all Madame Tussauds interactive attractions, visitors can be photographed with the Cage figure and the Hell Cycle.

Planet Hollywood Update By Rick Garman
There are two questions I’m getting almost every other day from my readers. The first asks when the Stardust will be imploded (the answer is: mid-March but they aren’t releasing an official date until the last moment because they don’t want to deal with major crowds). The second asks what is going on with the Aladdin. Or is it Planet Hollywood now? And if isn’t, when will it be not just “done” but “done done?”
There was a story in the Las Vegas Review Journal last week that finally gave some long-waited for details about the status of the changes at the hotel.
The rebranding from The Aladdin to Planet Hollywood will probably happen in April, timing that will coincide with the completion of much of the interior ground-level renovations. However that doesn’t mean that all work is stopping. Work on the exterior of the building will continue into the summer and room renovations (to remove the Arabian Nights scheme and add a Hollywood Nights one) will not even begin until April.
The entire façade of the hotel is being renovated now with construction extending past the April date to add new restaurants (including a branch of the famed Trader Vic’s) and retail space. Inside the casino will be expanded to include a poker room and sports book. The new Steve Wyrick theater complex just opened and another theater is being added.
The separately owned shopping mall now known as the Desert Passage will be remodeled and renamed Miracle Mile after all of the Road to Morocco detail is stripped away.
Finally, construction has begun on the condo/hotel towers going up behind the main building along Harmon Avenue.
So when will it be “done done”? Well, a wise hotel publicist once told me that renovations at Las Vegas hotels don’t actually stop. When they reach one end of the building they go back to the beginning and start over again. In other words, there is no such thing as “done done” but in real terms for Planet Hollywood, most of the heavy lifting should be done by late summer but there will be some sort of identifiable construction going on at the hotel or on its grounds well into 2008.

Center Strip Walking Tour By Rick Garman
Taking in all that The Strip has to offer is quite daunting. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and even easier to miss stuff that you will want to snap pictures of. So to make things a little easier, I’ve created itineraries for a couple of walking tours that I thought I’d share with you. Versions of these first appeared in my Moon Handbooks Las Vegas, but I’ve updated and expanded them since they were published.
This week let’s talk a way around the Center Strip area.
Starting and ending point: Bellagio
Approximate distance: 2 miles
Approximate time: 3-4 hours depending on how long you stop to stare
Best time: evening
If you are driving, park at Bellagio in the main garage and if you’re walking enter through the main doors into the lobby. Your first stop, the Botanical Gardens, is just off the lobby and adjacent to the doors that come in from the parking garage so you can’t miss it either way. Spend a few minutes appreciating the artistry that goes into creating these floral masterpieces. Go out the back of the gardens and walk down the hall to find the giant chocolate fountain at the Jean-Phillippe Patisserie. If you love chocolate, this is like a holy shrine. If you don’t like chocolate, I have nothing more to say to you.
Next head outside to catch a showing of the Fountains of Bellagio, the epic water, light, and sound show that is entertaining no matter how many times you’ve seen it. The fountain show is best viewed after the sun goes down to get the full effect of the colorful lights that accompany each one.
Walk north along the Strip to the pedestrian bridge that crosses Flamingo Road and you’ll arrive at Caesars Palace, a Roman-themed wonderland located here since 1966. The pedestrian bridge deposits you in an outdoor plaza that leads to the casino. Traverse it carefully – it’s easy to get lost, but if you turn get turned around just keep following the signs for the Forum Shops and that’s the direction you want to go.
Wander through the Forum Shops to get a gander at the silliness of a Gap in ancient Rome, plus you may catch the fountain shows inside the mall if your timing is right. They’re a good amusement but not worth going out of your way to see so if it’s a choice of waiting 30 minutes to see the next one or moving on with your life, I suggest the latter.
Keep going through the mall and eventually you’ll be deposited back on The Strip. Turn to your left and you’ll see a moving sidewalk that will take you into The Mirage. Just inside the entrance is the white tiger habitat and on your way to the front door you can see the tropical rain forest and the aquarium behind the check-in desk. Exit the front door to the valet parking area for a view of the Mirage volcano show.
Alongside the valet parking area is a stop for a tram that will take you to neighboring Treasure Island. It deposits you on the second floor at the back of the property near the parking garage and as you exit, turn right to take an escalator down to the main casino floor. Feel free to explore but if you want to skip this one, walk straight ahead to the exit through Buccaneer Bay, where they have the awful pirate show you shouldn’t bother seeing unless you’re desperate for entertainment or a glutton for punishment.
Instead, turn right and you’ll find a pedestrian bridge that will lead you across The Strip to The Venetian. It delivers you to the second floor walkway overlooking the outdoor St. Mark’s Square replica (and Gondola Rides) with an entrance to the Grand Canal Shoppes mall. With its replica of the Grand Canal, this is where you’ll find the indoor gondola rides. You can wander through the mall or take the escalators down to the main casino floor. Be sure to look up as you go for some really stunning artwork on the walls and ceilings. Turn right as you get off the escalators and follow the signs for the front desk. It’s worth the extra few steps to see the Grand Hall and lobby area, highly impressive marble affairs with enough filigree to fill the Louvre. Exit the main doors to the valet parking area.
As you come out of The Venetian head to The Strip and turn left on the sidewalk. This will lead you past Harrah’s and Imperial Palace to the Flamingo Las Vegas, one of the oldest continually operating resorts on The Strip, opened in 1946. Whether you choose to stop in any of these places is totally up to you. I personally wouldn’t put them high on my “sightseeing” tour since about the only good photo opportunities are of more slot machines, but if you feel like losing a few bucks these are not bad places to do it in.
Keep going past The Flamingo and you’ll come to a pedestrian bridge that crosses over Flamingo Road to Bally’s. Take the elevated moving sidewalk inside this hotel and pause for a minute to remember that this was the scene of one of the most devastating hotel fires in U.S. history. 87 people died here in 1980 when the hotel was known as the MGM Grand. Pass through the casino and on your right just past the main casino cage is a walkway lined with shops and restaurants. Take it.
That walkway will lead you to the back of Paris Las Vegas. Turn right and you’ll follow a cobblestone Parisian street scene to the main casino where you’ll find the ticket counter for the Eiffel Tower Experience. After you’ve finished, go out any of the main doors of the hotel to The Strip.
Turn left as you exit and you’ll see the hotel that was once known as The Aladdin, but is still in the process of being redeveloped into Planet Hollywood. This is due to be complete by mid-2007 so whether or not it’s worth your time to visit depends on when you read this.
Return to Bellagio via the crosswalk near Planet Hollywood or via the pedestrian bridge near Bally’s.
