Lady Luck remains shuttered
Downtown casino’s makeover will wait as financing falls through.
By Benjamin Spillman/Las Vegas Review Journal
A hotel-casino that was supposed to become “the anchor of the downtown market” remains shuttered almost one year after its owners closed the property and displaced nearly 700 workers.
When the Lady Luck closed Feb. 12, 2006, its owners said renovations would be complete within nine to 12 months.
On Nov. 1, Andrew Donner of Downtown Resorts told the Nevada Gaming Control Board the project would be delayed a year but pledged to reveal plans for the project, “in the next 30 days.”
But city officials in Las Vegas, which has an exclusive negotiating agreement with Donner and Downtown Resorts for a 5.5-acre property just north of the Lady Luck, say the renovation is on hold because the financing fell through.

‘Forever’ Isn’t Forever
Popular show returns to Gold Coast for limited run.
From “Lenny’s Las Vegas”/Las Vegas Review Journal
Don’t know how many of you were in town this past weekend for the Super Bowl, but if you were, whether you realized it or not, you were part of more than 250,000 fans who descended on our city to watch the Big Game. I’m told from the books in town that business was brisk and they figured betting for the game at our sports books would top $100 million. Add to that the millions spent on entertainment, food, dining and rooms and it was a pretty lucrative weekend for our hotel/casinos. The first half had me worried a bit as I bet the Colts and they needed to win by more than seven points. Thankfully, that happened and unlike most of my gambling ventures lately, I went home a winner.
Okay, now that I’ve bored you with that bit of trivia, let’s see what’s happening around town. I’m happy to hear that one of my favorite shows is back at the Gold Coast through April 1. I’m talking about “Forever Plaid,” a show that played to a full house for years at the Flamingo Las Vegas before leaving for a few years and returning to the Gold Coast about two years ago. Unfortunately, it will be leaving again following their April 1 performance unless they can find a gig at another hotel.
If you’ve not seen it, the show is a story about an endearing harmony group whose dreams of musical glory ended suddenly one fateful night en route to their professional debut in 1964. The group was slammed broadside by a school bus of Catholic teens on their way to see the Beatles make their television debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. These nerdy crooners with angelic voices have been dead for more that 40 years when they miraculously return to Earth on the Las Vegas stage to perform the show they never got to do in life.
The music is great and will bring back lot of memories and their spoof of the Ed Sullivan show will have you rolling in the aisles. Put this on your must-see list. Tickets are only $39.95, and for $44.95 you get dinner thrown in. A great deal.

Steve’s Las Vegas Quickies
Prince’s Super Bowl halftime performance reached an audience of about 90 million TV viewers. What did not reach those 90 million viewers was any reference to the Rio, where Prince currently headlines each weekend and where he will likely perform at least through the end of the spring. Such a mention of the hotel was not discussed in advance of his appearance (and the league’s Las Vega-phobia is likely one of the reasons) but even absent the plug, the box office at the hotel was abuzz and this weekend’s Prince performances are sold out.

A few clever readers, friends and related acquaintances have suggested that if Tommy Rocker opts to turn his business on Industrial Road into a topless club he change the name to “Tommy Knockers.” He says that’s not going to happen. That’s already the name of a brewpub in Idaho Springs, Colo.

Saturday is the (latest) new date for Ronn Lucas’ debut at the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex. Martin Nievera is set for Feb. 14.
Elton John hit a major milestone Saturday night - his 143rd performance at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. He told the crowd that, unlike fellow Colosseum headliner Celine Dion, he has always struggled with his weight and referred to Dion as “the singing Q-Tip” (just after qualifying that he loves her dearly). John also said he’d been asked several times to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show but declined, citing a numbing experience while performing for a disinterested audience at an NBA halftime show. As he explained, “I’d rather eat a live porcupine than do that again.”

A couple of local entertainers get some TV time in Sunday’s episode of “The Surreal Life Fame Games,” one that should have a warped appeal even for those who haven’t made a habit of watching VH1’s reality comedy.
It’s a competition inside the V Theater at Desert Passage mall, with the cast of oddball D-listers splitting into two teams to stage a variety show. One team is coached by magician Nathan Burton, veteran of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and E! network’s “The Entertainer.” The other is coached by prop comic and fellow “Entertainer” contestant Joe Trammel.

The Scintas plan to donate proceeds from Friday’s show at the Sahara to Crime Stoppers of Nevada, the tip line for anonymous help with solving crimes or finding criminals.
Another topless show returns Monday. Or, more accurately, “X” goes topless for the first time. Now called “‘X’ Burlesque,” the cabaret revue will reveal at the Flamingo what was obstructed by electrician’s tape at the V Theater, a nongaming venue that isn’t licensed for adult entertainment.
The revue produced by Angela and Matt Stabile moves into the Flamingo’s smaller 180-seat venue to be a roommate production with The Second City comedy troupe, working around Second City’s schedule.

Things changed quickly last week when two shows bound for Palace Station were canceled by Station Casinos. “The Mentalist” (Gerry McCambridge) and a female magic revue called “Enchanted” both were to be produced by Paris Las Vegas hypnotist Anthony Cools.
Both sides were tight-lipped on the reason for the about-face. It could be Stations executives decided to hold off on any long-term leases with outside entities until the dust settles on a management-led effort to take the publicly traded company private.

Even before the “old” Las Vegas observation wheel has been constructed, development company, Voyager Entertainment, has announced plans for a “new” steel nightclub/observation wheel project — an ambitious futuristic version of the London Eye. As the project, first announced back in 2003, has already worked its way through multiple locations without ever getting off the drawing board, we’re not exactly holding our breath.

This year’s Super Bowl betting handle in Nevada was $93,067,358, which fell just short of last year’s record of $94,534,372. The lower-than-expected wagering was made up for by a $12.9 million win for the casinos, which outpaced last year’s $8.8 million.

The controversy that has been surrounding Jamie Gold’s 2006 $12 million WSOP winnings is finally over. In a joint signed statement issued yesterday, Gold and LA-based TV producer Bruce Crispin Leyser agreed the matter should be resolved “without litigation.” The two did not make clear how much Leyser would receive — Gold’s already withdrawn $6 million of his winnings, but the remaining 50% has remained frozen pending a settlement in the dispute surrounding Leyser’s claim that Gold had promised to split the prize with him.

Navigating The Slot Machines by Bill Burton
I recently purchased a GPS for my car. This item is one of the most phenomenal things I have ever used. All you have to do enter the address where you want to go and it directs you turn by turn to your destination. If you make a wrong turn the unit automatically recalculates where you are and adjusts the directions to get you back on course. I started thinking how great it would be if I could have a navigating system that could guide and direct me every where in all situations. Any time you feel lost or need directions you could just consult it. For instance it would be nice to have one in some of the casinos I visit.
It’s easy to get lost in some casinos especially when you are visiting for the first time or only visit occasionally. You may find yourself looking over a vast sea of slot machines and start wondering which one to play.

Sorrentino Headlines IP’s “Legends” with “Voices in My Head,” Elton John Impersonation
“The Bitch is Back” – and with him are voices in his head.
For the first time ever in its 24 years, “Legends in Concert” at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino will headline a comedian to host the show.
Beginning Monday, Feb.12, musical comedian and impressionist Stephen Sorrentino stars in the celebrity tribute show with excerpts from his original hit production “Voices in My Head” and reprises his critically acclaimed impersonation of legendary rocker Elton John.
Sorrentino captivates audiences with his cutting-edge wisecracking and ingeniously clever takeoffs that include a whacky “Tribute to Led Zeppelin,” classic voices such as Groucho, Pee Wee Herman, Jerry Lewis, Ethel Merman, Joan Rivers and Donald Trump and a “politically incorrect tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.” Then he rocks showgoers with the No. 1 Elton John impersonation in the world, singing many crowd pleasers such as “The Bitch is Back,” “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Your Song” and “”Crocodile Rock.”
Sorrentino credits “Legends in Concert” with giving him his first big break in 1997 – 10 years ago to the day – that launched his successful multifaceted career.
A quick wit and master imitator, Sorrentino can do more than 200 celebrity voices, is an accomplished composer and musician on piano, sax, flute and guitar, has opened for many Las Vegas superstars including several times recently for Patti LaBelle, Dennis Miller and Dana Carvey and has appeared in 10 feature films. “Voices in My Head” has delighted audiences from coast to coast, most recently in Atlantic City.
Sorrentino replaces the Blues Brothers and U2 in the current lineup, which also includes Marilyn Monroe, Rod Stewart, Janet Jackson and Elvis Presley.

NORM: Spears means business this trip.
From: The Las Vegas Review Journal
Britney Spears is back in Las Vegas, where she has a history of making oops-I-did-it-again headlines, but this trip might be all business.
Spears was at the Palms on Wednesday, working on a new album.
With Spears most of this week is her latest producer, Lukasz ‘Dr. Luke’ Gottwald, who helped “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson claim two Grammy Awards a year ago with her monster hit, “Since U Been Gone.”
Spears, 25, promised her fans last month that she’s getting serious after a two-month run of negative headlines for hard partying and missing underwear.
On her last trip to Las Vegas, she was carried out of Pure nightclub shortly after hosting the New Year’s Eve midnight countdown at the Caesars Palace hot spot.
Her manager, Larry Rudolph, has said her next single could be out this summer, with her album out by fall.
Spears has been working with a host of producers, such as Pharrell, Scott Storch, Timbaland, Max Martin, Kara DioGuardi, Jonathan Rotem, rapper T-Pain, Sean Garrett, Swizz Beatz, Patrick J. Que Smith and Nate Hill.
Her Web site confirmed that one of her songs is titled “Who Can She Trust.”

The Art of Serving
Caesars’ director of butler services has passion, dedication for work.
From: Lenny’s Las Vegas/Las Vegas Review Journal.
There are a lot of people who work at hotels in our town who get no recognition, but who perform valuable and interesting jobs. For a change of pace I thought I’d tell you about one such person in my column today.
If they ever rewrite the Oxford Dictionary, don’t be surprised if you find the same two words to define passion and personality — Valentino Crespo. This 50-year-old dynamo, who looks 10 years younger and has the energy of a 20-year-old, is Director of Butler Services at Caesars Palace, a position he has well earned since learning the art of serving at a very young age from his father in Puerto Rico.
“At age 10,” says Valentino, “I had it in my blood. My father was a great server and my mother taught me how to cook a variety of dishes, including Japanese and Chinese, and how to set a table properly. And both of them taught me about service and told the most wonderful stories. I was enchanted.” Today, Valentino oversees a staff of 30 who are responsible for the 70 elegant suites that Caesars offers to its high rollers and celebrities. It is a demanding job, one that consumes 14 to 16 hours a day, often seven days a week. But Valentino wouldn’t have it any other way.

SHOW REVIEW: ‘The Musical History of the King’
Thank You Very Much: Trent Carlini helps restore Elvis’ image on the Strip. By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Yes, he does say “Thank you very much.” But the sincere, low-key way he says it is perhaps the key to Trent Carlini’s Elvis tribute, “The Musical History of the King.
“To say it’s mildly surprising to see a straight-forward, nonkitschy Elvis Presley impersonator these days is to say why more of them pop up at Las Vegas wedding chapels than showrooms.
But watch how many women head to the front of the Sahara stage when Carlini invites them down for the kisses and scarves ritual during “Suspicious Minds.” It’s clear the Elvis aura still lingers, and that Carlini is onto something potent with the camp-free show last seen at the Las Vegas Hilton in 2003 and 2004.

John Katsilometes talks props with LV Hilton Sports Book Executive Director Jay Kornegay
Jay Kornegay has never been accused of “fixing” a Super Bowl, but he has been accused of fixing a Super Bowl proposition bet. It was 1999 when Kornegay, then the sports book director at Imperial Palace, posted an over/under bet on Denver Broncos reserve quarterback Bubby Brister making a single rushing attempt. Late in the game the Broncos, leading the Atlanta Falcons 34-19, pulled starter John Elway. Coach Mike Shanahan then called two “kneel-downs” by Brister.
Kneel-downs are considered rushing attempts and the bet came in “over.” Problem was, neither play was shown during the telecast as cameras panned to Shanahan and Elway crying tears of joy on the sideline. “One guy, who was crazy, accused me of calling Shanahan on the sideline and telling him to pull Elway and put in Brister,” Kornegay, today the executive sports book director at the Las Vegas Hilton, recalled Thursday during a phone interview. “He knew I was from Denver, I guess, and had some kind of hotline set up.”
Kornegay has operated Las Vegas sports books for 18 years, first at Bally’s, then at Imperial Palace and, for the past two years, the Hilton. He also recalls the 1995 Super Bowl, when he posted a prop bet on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Kordell Stewart to catch a pass, throw a pass and make one rushing attempt (you could bet “yes” or “no”). Stewart, called “Slash” because of his multifaceted skills, caught a pass and had one rushing attempt before halftime. In the third quarter, in relief of starting QB Neil O’Donnell, Stewart rolled right and cocked his arm to pass. “We had one of those parties with about 2,000 people and you should have heard the crowd. It was like everybody made that bet.”
Stewart tucked the ball and did not pass. The “no” crowd went wild.

Sharing a taste of romance
By Len Butcher
February marks the start of LOVE month, and chances are that Las Vegas will set a record when it comes to people tying the knot. But if you just want to take your partner to a romantic restaurant to celebrate Valentine’s Day or any other day, here’s a few suggestions.
Wynn Las Vegas — Corsa Cucina & Bar: Chef Stephen Kalt offers a decadent menu that’s sure to put you in the mood. With selections like handmade trennete pasta tossed with lemon cream, osetra caviar, and chive, Kobe beef and pear salad with shaved pecorino, roasted Colorado double lamb chop with curried golden potato gnocchi, and naked lobster with lobster angelotti, porcini mushrooms, and pancetta custard and a white truffle bread pudding with crushed raspberries and pear sorbet served up in this red hot restaurant, there’s room for nothing else in your evening but a little romance.
MGM Grand — Fiamma: Executive Chef Carlos Buscaglia and Pastry Chef Stephanie Szwagiel think nothing’s more romantic than an exquisite Italian meal paired with memorable Italian vino and your favorite romantic movie. Book the elegant private screening room and let the romance begin. But first, the food! Enjoy antipasti of Kummomoto oysters Italian caviar, truffle-lemon oil, a pasta course of mezzaluna with fresh black winter truffle, paired with Jermann “Dreams” Chardonnay, Venezia Giulia 2004, a grilled 40 oz. porterhouse for two and glasses of Montellor “Castelrapiti”, Toscana 1997, and finally the dolce; warm, bittersweet chocolate layered crepes and raspberry-mascarpone cheese cake gelato and fresh farmer’s market raspberries to savor before you pop in that film.
MGM Grand — Nobhill: Acclaimed Chef Michael Mina assembled a gift of love for his customers, a special tasting menu reflecting his favorite recipes from his brand new cookbook. In the chocolate and olive hued room you may be settling into a seat in a glass enclosed both to enjoy other’s company as well as such signature dishes designed for your enjoyment. Start with American caviar parfait (Page 174) smoked salmon, shallot-potato cake, chive crème fraîche , move on to Maine lobster pot pie (Page 189) and fried Sonoma Chicken (Page 198) with truffled macaroni and cheese, indulge in a trio of butter poached Kobe beef rib-eye (Page 90) seared foie gras, pinot noir reduction, cipollini onions and conclude with a banana tart tatin (Page 213) maple crème anglaise, maple sugar ice cream before walking away with an autographed copy of the cookbook that will ensure you keep your love alive every time you turn to your favorite dish.
These are just a taste of what Las Vegas has to offer in the romance and fine dining department. I’d be remiss not to mention the Top of the World restaurant at the Stratosphere, the Eiffel Tower restaurant at Paris, Alize at the Palms, Picasso at Bellagio, and one of my favorites, Andres French Restaurant downtown. Bon appetit!

LAS VEGAS HILTON BOASTS LARGEST PAINTED MURAL IN LAS VEGAS
The Las Vegas Hilton is now home to the largest hand painted mural in Las Vegas, with the 128’ X 56’10” image of Hilton headliner Barry Manilow on display on the property’s main tower (South facing).
The mural was installed over a five day period using a grid system to prepare the image and three painters using brushes and rollers to complete the finished mural on Saturday, February 3.
“We wanted to reflect Barry’s presence at our property in a big and unique way” said Ken Ciancimino, Las Vegas Hilton executive vice president. “It can’t get much bigger than this and, just like Barry, it will have staying power-the elements can’t affect it.”
Sky Tag, the company responsible for the mural, specializes in spectacular images in metropolitan areas. It digitally prints large building wraps; paints super-sized supergraphics; and designs the largest murals in the United States. This is the biggest superstar mural the company has painted in Las Vegas.
Manilow opened “Music and Passion” at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 23, 2005 and in March 2006, the resort extended his exclusive long-term engagement through 2008.
“Manilow: Music and Passion” is an exciting, multi-faceted production that features contemporary hi-tech music and effects mixed with the classic entertainment values of Las Vegas legends such as Sinatra, Presley, Davis, and Martin. It stars Manilow and a cast and band of 14, offering not only a full-scale production but also the intimacy of a state-of-the-art 1,700-seat theater, unique “on-stage” seating, incredible songs and a concert that changes on a nightly basis.

The Silverton Casino Lodge has been named Best Locals Casino in AOL CityGuide’s City’s Best® 2007 Las Vegas awards.
AOL CityGuide’s City’s Best® program features the best entertainment options Las Vegas has to offer — everything from Best Burgers and Best Pizza to Best Dance Clubs and Best Happy Hour. The Silverton Casino Lodge’s recent renovations, upgrades, rewarding players club, intimate poker room, 165,000 square foot Bass Pro Shop and unparalleled dining options all played a big part in winning locals’ vote for Best Locals Casino.
“Being awarded the title of Best Locals Casino in a city packed with such stellar competition is a major compliment,” said Craig Cavileer, president of the Silverton Casino Lodge. “We work very hard to provide locals with the best possible gaming, entertainment and dining experience without having to travel to the Strip, and we are honored that they have recognized us for our efforts.”
The AOL awards also honored two of the Silverton Casino Lodge’s themed lounges. Hootie & the Blowfish’s Shady Grove Lounge won third place in the Best Cocktails category, while Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge placed high in the list for Best Conversation Bar. For Mermaid Restaurant and Lounge, this is not the first time to be recognized for its intimate atmosphere. The lounge was one of only seven locations in Las Vegas named the Best Place To Have A Quiet Conversation in a major 2007 Las Vegas nightlife survey compiled from more than 4,000 diner and clubber surveys.
Consumers’ votes ultimately determine which venues are chosen as winners in their categories. All City’s Best® establishments are nominated based on recommendations from AOL CityGuide’s local correspondents who live and work in Las Vegas, the editorial insights of the CityGuide programming team and user feedback.
The Silverton Casino Lodge is located three miles south of Mandalay Bay at I-15 and Blue Diamond Rd/Dean Martin Drive. The Hoff storms Las Vegas
By Thom Wise/ Las Vegas magazine
David Hasselhoff seems to live by his own 11th commandment: Thou shalt have fun.
It’s just that … now he does it in a dress.
No, The Hoff hasn’t jumped the fence. He remains happily straight, the same macho Dr. Snapper Foster (Young and the Restless), Michael Knight (Knight Rider) and/or Mitch Buchannon (Baywatch) whom you know and love.
Hasselhoff now plays a role no one would’ve ever imagined: the flamboyantly outrageous theater director Roger DeBris in The Producers, opening this week at Paris Las Vegas.
“Doing this campy gay thing is hysterical,” he exclaims with an enthusiasm that can only be described as infectious during a recent interview. “I think we’ll do really well.”
The other stars in the show, Brad Oscar and Larry Raben, both reprise their Broadway roles as Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom respectively. Together, they come up with a scheme to bilk a group of willing investors in their “surefire, no-way-can-it-fail” musical called Springtime for Hitler.
(The capper to the plot is that Hasselhoff’s character refuses to direct the show unless it has a happy ending—so the Nazis win the war!)
Beyond television and music videos, Hasselhoff isn’t a complete stranger to the boards. He recently played the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago, as well in as a well-received version of Jekyll & Hyde. Yet he clearly holds his fellow thespians in high regard.
“Those guys (Brad and Larry) are so good. They’re like a well-oiled machine. In fact, the whole cast was handpicked from the very best around the county. I’m just the icing on the cake.”
Make that hairy icing.
The Hoff goes against tradition and will not be shaving his chest or legs, something no self-respecting cross-dresser would ever do.
“It was Mel (Brooks)!” he insists. “He said he wanted me to keep the hair. It was: ‘I want a man in a dress.’ Only it’s a $10,000 dress that weighs 20 pounds, all crystals and beads.”
Still, The Hoff says he owes it all to Brooks, the show’s creator, who decided he wanted Hasselhoff and never wavered in his decision.
The next question seems logical, for a man without extensive musical longevity: What hurts more: legs or lungs?
“My legs are killing me. I didn’t realize how much dance there is in this show. And in heels!” he says. “But I’ve gotten my wind back. (And) memorizing lines is just like football camp: You learn your lines just like you learn the plays.”
Yet he ponders: “Why did I take this role? I have money in the bank. And I don’t need to see a three-story photo of me on a hotel. I guess I did it because you laugh your ass off. It’s got something for everyone: gorgeous women and buffed-out guys.”
Hasselhoff stops, working up his own tag line: “Come see me at the Paris hotel. Come hassle the Hoff.”
Methinks we’ll just have to take you up on that offer.

Finding Fontana
Four things to consider. By Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Magazine
While the night is an infinite playground in this city, 3 a.m. comes very fast. With usually only a weekend at best, where you choose your carousal perch should be carefully deliberated, weighing several different factors before haphazardly jumping into a watering hole. Using the chic lounge Fontana as our subject, we will break down exactly what needs to be considered when looking for the ideal evening out in our buffet of desert sin.
First: location. Fontana is located in one of the original staples of Vegas’ contemporary elegance, the Bellagio. Although hors d’oeuvres are served all night inside the lounge, the Bellagio is engulfed with some of the finest dining establishments in the region. Whether it is a pre- or post-dinner cocktail, or both, that you are looking for, the real estate Fontana sits on couldn’t be more ideal.
Second factor to consider: view. With hotels offering 60-plus floors, sight lines are a huge selling point. Fontana is located on the ground floor, but still manages to rival neighboring high-rise cocktail hangs. Its ocular nest egg is the outdoor patio, sitting right in the center of Lake Bellagio and in the ideal vantage point to take in the legendary landmark fountains. Whether seated, or standing over the railing, the patio is arguably one of the best photo opportunities to capture the visually bewitching water beauty.
The third nighttime qualification to check off: music. Many party houses have a DJ pumping music so loud that you have the joy of listening to the ring in your ears for 12 hours after you leave. While hearing damage is an excellent keepsake for some, Fontana chooses to ease off the decibel level enough for you to maneuver reasonable conversation, while also giving plenty of fodder for the feet on the dance floor. The music is live, contemporary and upbeat. Isis is a regular on the stage, a six-member band offering contemporary covers as well as original rock tracks. Dian Diaz makes several appearances throughout the week with more traditional lounge fare, as well as just making an appearance on the Billboard Charts with “No More Tears” cracking the top 50 in the Hot Adult Contemporary category. Another six-piece band, Clockwork, constantly packs the dance floor as well.
The fourth and final factor to take into consideration when planning a night out in Vegas: convenience. Time is of the essence when partying. Lines at some clubs can take hours, to get a drink once inside almost just as long. Fontana is easy, but doesn’t sacrifice service. A line can grow on the weekend, but it isn’t going to be long enough to extinguish the energy of the night. Roaming cocktail waitresses are ever attentive, and you don’t need to shell out a paycheck for a bottle to get a seat. You can comfortably have a conversation with great atmosphere, or you can indulge the urge to dance. The dance floor is full of energy but not so full that you fall into the sardine-packed sway. Fontana is an upscale retreat but still an unpretentious party—a stupendous place to unwind without the clubbing chaos.
Jack Daniel’s and go-go dancers are fabulous for some nights; Fontana is perfect for the others.

Play your way into elite nationally televised tournament
By Paul Szydellko/Las Vegas Magazine
Gearing up for the third annual NBC National Heads-Up Poker Tournament on March 1-4, Caesars Palace will host a play-in tournament at 3 p.m. on Feb. 10.
For a $230 entry fee with $200 re-buys, players will seek a way into the elite tournament. Two players from this competition and one player from the online tournament this month (nbcheadsup.com) will join a field of 64 players in March for a unique series of one-on-one games—a single-elimination, bracket-style format modeled after college basketball tournaments.
Last year, Ted Forrest, pictured, outlasted a prestigious field that included 2005 champ Phil Hellmuth and two-time runner-up Craig Ferguson. Also expected to compete this year are Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Jamie Gold, Joe Hachem, Jennifer Harman, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Chris Moneymaker and Daniel Negreanu.“This tournament is all about pressure,” Forrest said. “There are a lot of great players involved, but in the end, it’s all about who can focus on their cards and opponent, not on the big chance of going home empty-handed. But I did it once, so I can certainly do it again.
The tournament in March will be taped for broadcast on NBC and CNBC over seven consecutive Sundays in April and May.

Monorail Update By Rick Garman
When it launched in 2004 the Las Vegas Monorail was touted as the future of transportation in the city, with projections that it would carry as many as 50,000 riders a day, quickly turn a profit, and expand around The Strip, to Downtown, and the airport. To say that it hasn’t quite worked out that way is, perhaps, the understatement of the century thus far and while it may not be quite as much of a disaster as the monorail they built in Springfield in that classic episode of “The Simpsons,” every month news comes out that slides it closer and closer to that level of misadventure at least in terms of public perception. Figures were released recently for ridership on the line for 2006 and it wasn’t good. The average daily riders for the year were around 19,000 and in December of 2006 that number was only 15,430. That’s down by almost a third from the 2005 numbers and well short of projections and what it needs to turn a profit.
So what’s the problem? Why aren’t people riding the monorail? This is strictly my opinion, mind you, but I think it suffers as a transportation choice for two primary reasons: convenience and cost.
The route of the monorail is great if you happen to be going where it goes. So for instance if you are in town for a trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center and are staying at the MGM Grand there is probably no better, faster, or cheaper way to get to and fro. But if, on the other hand, you are staying at New York-New York and are having dinner at Bellagio, by the time you walked across the street, through the MGM Grand all the way to the train station, waited for a train, took the train to Bally’s, walked all the way through Bally’s to The Strip and across the street to Bellagio you could’ve just walked up The Strip and already be seated comfortably, sipping a pre-dinner cocktail.
And even if you’re going to the hotels the monorail currently services, the hike back to the stations can be daunting. When there are taxi-cabs galore and the double-decker Deuce busses trolling The Strip 24 hours a day, the convenience factor dims considerably.
The second factor is the cost. When the monorail opened a one-way ticket cost $3. Now it’s up to $5, which is not a lot of money to be sure, but consider the fact that you can take a couple steps out the front door of the MGM Grand and catch the Deuce all the way to Downtown Las Vegas for the same amount of money (AND you get to cruise The Strip instead of watching the backs of the hotels whiz by). That makes that $5 seem like less of a bargain that it probably is.
All of this puts some big question marks around the future of the monorail. The operators of the line and their small army of spokespeople remain upbeat, insisting that the cash reserves of the line will keep it running at a deficit well into 2008 and that the proposed airport extension is a “go” even though no one is quite sure how they are going to pay for it.
But set aside where the money is going to come from for a moment and also set aside that even in a perfect world it would be 2011 before the airport extension could be up and running, let’s go back to that convenience factor of such a plan.
Again, it’ll be great if you happen to be staying at one of the hotels that the monorail stops at, but let’s pretend you’re staying at Caesars Palace or The Mirage. Are you really going to schlep your luggage on a train, get off at the back of The Flamingo, walk with that heavy luggage all the way through The Flamingo and across the street to your hotel to save yourself a couple of bucks? I don’t see it happening and I think the extension will suffer the same problems the existing one does – it is only going to attract the subset of visitors for whom it happens to be convenient and that subset will not be large enough to put it in the black.
Airport extension or not, the big question is what will happen to the monorail if it can’t turn things around by 2008 when it is projected to run out of money?
The whole thing was privately financed and there is absolutely no obligation from the city or county to step in to try to rescue it at taxpayer expense. The attitude from most local residents seems to be that anyone in the government who would suggest such a thing would very quickly get ridden out on a rail, mono or otherwise.
The casinos could step in and either subsidize or buy the entire thing, but since the six hotel stops along the route are at places that are owned by five different companies, none of whom are famous for playing nicely with each other, that option seems like wishful thinking.
So what option does that leave? Well, as Homer and Marge can attest, there is no monorail in Springfield anymore. I personally don’t think it will come to that since a failure of that magnitude would be too embarrassing to too many people and companies, but I think anyone who suggests that it is totally impossible for it to happen is kidding themselves.

Pennies from heaven
Pahrump man wins huge chunk of change playing slots.
By Timothy Pratt /Las Vegas Sun.
Che McFadden, standing behind the counter at E-Z Cash Super Pawn, across the parking lot from the Pahrump Nugget, could recall only the customer’s first name.
“Wayne is his name, don’t remember his last name - he’s been in here before, pawned a few small things, a saw,” McFadden said, pushing buttons on a video and DVD player while consulting his memory.
As of 12:31 p.m. last Wednesday, Wayne probably won’t need to ever again pawn a saw, or anything else.
Wayne - he hasn’t revealed his last name publicly - won $18,794,414.61 at the casino, apparently entering the Guinness Book of World Records for penny slot jackpots, according to casino General Manager Jeremy Jenson.

John Katsilometes takes note of an Internet radio survey that shows little confidence in the Strip’s new production shows.
Talk about a tough room.
Internet radio listeners have given votes of “no confidence” to two productions that have barely hit town (one of which has not even opened). Posted on the podcast “The Strip” hosted by Las Vegas freelance journalist, podcaster and Fab LV frequenter Steve Friess and co-host Miles Smith (a producer at KVBC Channel 3) are results of a poll asking listeners, “Which of these is most likely to announce its closure next?” Listed are Danny Gans, “Folies Bergere,” “Jubilee,” Lance Burton, “Le Reve,” “The Producers,” “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” “Zumanity,” and the critically acclaimed “Other.” “The Producers,” which opened just Wednesday at Paris Las Vegas, topped (or, bottomed) the poll with 21 percent of the votes. “Spamalot,” which opens March 8 at Wynn Las Vegas, was next with 19 percent. The poll is nonscientific and (fortunately for the productions) nonbinding. A total of 104 listeners responded and were allowed to vote just once each.
In a similar poll, listeners were asked which shows would still be playing in Las Vegas in 2017. Cirque du Soleil stalwarts “Love” and “O” were the favorites, at 18 percent apiece, of 125 respondents. The next poll asks, “Who is the most annoying Vegas personality?” To vote for one of the nine listed - and you can vote for three - go to www.thestrippodcast.com.

IN CONCERT: Strait-forward country.
Old-school performer sings of women, booze and the thrill of the open road.
By Jason Bracelin/Las Vegas Review Journal
The cowboy in white took on the man in black, and it was a telling moment: If Johnny Cash was country’s id, at least for a time, George Strait is most definitely its conscience, a true believer who defends the mores of traditional honky tonk with Pentecostal zeal.
Tapping out the beat on his guitar in front of a packed house at the MGM Grand Garden arena, smiling like he was running for office, Strait rendered Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” less an outlaw anthem than a rowdy, high-stepping tutorial in country western swing, digging the menace out of the tune the way a dentist mines a cavity.
This was Strait doing what he does best, making pathos palatable, turning heartache into hit after hit after hit (the man’s notched more than 30 No. 1 singles in his three-decade career).

NORM: Critics shower Prince with praise.
Prince might discover that nothing jump-starts a career like an electrifying performance in front of 93 million Super Bowl viewers.
Raves poured in Monday after his halftime extravaganza, which will long evoke the image of his “Purple Rain” finale in a monsoon.
“The best halftime Super Bowl show ever,” gushed “Rolling Stone.”
“A quick taste of transcendent pop genius,” said “The Village Voice.”
But there’s speculation that Prince added a risqué punctuation mark to his big night, something he would’ve done in his uninhibited and uncensored days.
Conservative syndicated radio host Laura Ingraham suggested on her Monday show that Prince’s final silhouette scene, a side shot of him playing the guitar behind a fluttering white curtain, was a phallic message.
Or maybe it was a sly reminder from the purple icon, who wore an aqua-on-peach suit, that he can still get crazy, even with NFL watchdogs breathing down his neck.
All in all, the only way it could have been a better night for Prince is if the raindrops turned purple or the score ended up 31-21.
Prince returns to his 3121 club at the Rio for Saturday and Sunday shows this weekend, and has extended his NBA All-Star Weekend to three nights.

NAME GAME
Peyton Tuley of Las Vegas will have a lot of explaining to do later her in her life.
No, she wasn’t named after Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning. Wrong team.
The 2 1/2-year-old daughter of Dave and Wendy Tuley was named after Chicago Bears great Walter Payton. The Tuleys feminized the name after naming their first daughter, Jordyn, 4, after Chicago Bulls’ icon Michael Jordan.
To spread the gospel Sunday, Peyton and Jordyn wore their Bears outfits to church, but their prayers weren’t answered.
And no, said Dave Tuley, who grew up in Chicago, “we’re not going to name our next kid after Butkus or Ditka.”

`HYPNOSIS GONE WILD’ TAKES A LEAP TO EMPIRE BALLROOM ON MARCH 3rd
Michael Johns and Terry Stokes continue to create hypnotic magic by moving their wildly successful show, “Hypnosis Gone Wild” to the world-famous Empire Ballroom with opening night on Saturday, March 3rd at 11 p.m.
Tickets for “Hypnosis Gone Wild” are now on-sale, and are available at the Empire Ballroom box office at 702.836.0833 or online at www.HypnosisGoneWild.com. Tickets are priced at $39.95 and $49.95 plus applicable taxes and handling fee. Performances of “Hypnosis Gone Wild” run seven nights a week, with shows beginning nightly at 11 p.m. “We have had a tremendous run at the KRAVE but with our continued success we needed a larger and more versatile showroom to accommodate the growth we are experiencing,” exclaimed show producer Richard Keeley. “After seeing Hypnosis Gone Wild,” I waited for the opportunity to get the show here. It is truly a perfect fit for our outstanding venue,” says gregarious showroom President, Gino LoPinto. Audiences can still expect razor-sharp adult comedy and amazing feats of hypnosis as two masters of hypnosis join forces and offer a truly new hypnotic experience every evening. As alternate headliners, some evenings will feature Michael Johns in a solo show; other nights will be Terry Stokes. In some cases, audiences will experience a wild ride as Johns and Stokes become a two-man tag team each trying to one-up the other with their astounding feats of hypnosis.
“The Empire Ballroom is an incredible venue that is perfect for hypnosis or shall I say the venue is hypnotic in its own way,” said Michael Johns. “With hypnosis, the audience is the star of the show and we want them to participate. We create a lot of off-the-cuff comedy, but we never embarrass anybody in the show – there’s a line I refuse to cross. Nobody is going to walk off the stage and feel ashamed.”
Terry Stokes has performed comedic hypnosis from Arizona to Hong Kong and everywhere in between. Don’t let this self-described “South Georgia redneck” fool you; he is a student of the art of hypnosis and majored in behavior modification while in university. More information is available at www.HypnosisGoneWild.com.

Mistaken Elvis Identity for “Legends” Impersonator: Two Mag Covers, Each Wrong Name
In a town with nearly as many Elvises as there are buffets, those who impersonate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with style, grace and real talent stand far and above the rest of the sideburned wannabes in jumpsuits.
At the top is Matt Lewis, featured performer of “Legends in Concert,” the celebrity tribute spectacular now in its 24th year at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. Lewis first impersonated Elvis for a school talent show when he was 12 years old. Now, six nights every week, two shows per night for the past four years, Lewis leaves the ladies swooning in the aisles with his charm, boyish good looks, commanding voice and dead-ringer compelling impersonation of the truck driver from Tupelo.
While all Elvis impersonators begin with the hair, the outfit and swivel hips, their individual appearance combined with a signature nuanced performance make it easy to tell them apart.
You’d think.
The past month has been good news and bad news for Lewis. His bigger-than-life face with those gorgeous greenish-blue eyes and black wavy hair has been featured on two magazine covers – a local publication and a regional airline carrier. That’s the good news.
The bad news is that in both cases, he was identified by name as one of his impersonator competitors. And not the same one in both magazines.
“Don’t Be Cruel.”
What’s an Elvis to do?
“Return to Sender.”
And how does the Imperial Palace feel about the mistaken identity when it works so hard to get “Legends” publicity?
“Heartbreak Hotel.”
So, all you media out there, help us give Matt Lewis the credit he deserves in the town that loves Elvises. Photos are attached so there will be no doubt you will recognize Matt Lewis when you see him.
“Viva Las Vegas.”
We appreciate it.
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.”
Thankyouthankyouverymuch.

Wyrick’s Wait Almost Over
While admittedly behind schedule, Steve Wyrick’s entertainment complex, which includes a 500-seat showroom as well as Triq Ultra Lounge, is nearing an expected opening date toward the end of February in the Miracle Mile Shops in the Aladdin Hotel and Casino. “We understand construction has taken exceedingly long,” Wyrick told the Eye, “but, as they say, all good things are worth waiting for.” Last September, the Eye broke the news about the complex, as well as Wyrick’s lofty goals for the mixed-use facility, which included longtime Rio-mainstay Ron Lucas performing an afternoon show and Filipino sensation Martin Nievera an early evening show. Rounding out the entertainment quintet was supposed to be popular off-Broadway play “Defending the Caveman,” but the Eye has learned that those plans will not take place after all. “I’m a big fan of ‘Defending the Caveman,’” the always-classy Wyrick continued with some disappointment. “I know whatever course they choose, they are sure to succeed. I wish them the very best.” Wyrick continued to note that a replacement celebrity headliner would be announced in the near future, so stay tuned…
