Preparations under way for Stardust implosion.
Everything not steel or concrete will be removed before demolition in mid-March.
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
If it isn’t steel or concrete, it’s being removed from the shuttered Stardust hotel tower.
In preparation for the planned mid-March implosion of the 32-story building, construction crews have been busy the past few months removing everything from inside the tower that wasn’t already auctioned off.
Most visible to passers-by is the removal of the tower’s purple-tinted window glass. From a distance, observers can see straight through several of the upper floors.

Paula Poundstone will be doing a performance in Las Vegas on Friday, February 23 at Boulder Station Casino (Club Madrid; 7:30pm)
Paula’s new book, THERE’S NOTHING IN THIS BOOK THAT I MEANT TO SAY which took a total of over eight years to write, due to a severe case of Writer’s Block is now available.
Here is a little biography about Paula:
Known for her honesty, and an off-kilter view of the world, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot is legendary. Whether she’s talking about politics or being a single working mom with three kids, her quirky observations and spot on timing have earned her the reputation of being one of the best comics working today. Paula is so quick and unassuming that audience members at her live shows often leave complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter and debating whether the random people she talked to were planted in the audience.
An Emmy Award winner, Paula recently premiered her hilarious one hour stand up special on BRAVO, “Paula Poundstone: Look What the Cat Dragged In,” and her new laugh-out-loud biography, THERE’S NOTHING IN THIS BOOK THAT I MEANT TO SAY (Harmony, November 2006, with foreword by Mary Tyler Moore), is also now available on bookshelves nationwide. For a free autographed bookplate, visit Paula’s website at www.paulapoundstone.com.
Voted the first woman to ever receive a cable ACE award for best standup comedy special, and an American Comedy Award for funniest comedienne, Paula can be heard regularly on NPR’s popular weekly news and information show Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me!
Paula has made regular appearances on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In addition to her BRAVO special, she has had 2 hour-long specials on HBO and starred in numerous cable and network television specials, including a rare 2 appearances on ABC’s A Gala for the President at Ford’s Theatre.” She was also the first woman ever to be invited to perform at the White House Press Correspondents Dinner. In addition to her new book, Paula is also the author, along with her high school math teacher, of the “Math with a Laugh” series - three hilarious, but informative math work books for the trade and public for children grades 4-8.
Despite a busy schedule, Paula is a single working mom and remains resolute about devoting the bulk of her time to being at home, in Santa Monica, with her three children ages 8, 12 and 15. She says things couldn’t be better.
NOTE FROM STEVE.
Paula took an interest in my newsletter after a friend of hers pointed out to her that there was an article about her in the newsletter. So she asked me if I would put the above article in the newsletter and of course, I was glad to.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a personal invitation extended to my members to see her Las Vegas show in the Forums.

The sign seems to beg for a lawsuit, but Elvis’ Restaurant & Lounge, which opened last month at 545 E. Sahara Ave., three blocks east of the Strip, is owned by Elvis Presley impressionist Elvis Nargi, for whom the business is named. That keeps the blue meanies policing any infringement of Presley’s name and image away.

One of four planned productions has jumped ship from magician Steve Wyrick’s much-delayed theater at the Desert Passage mall. “Defending the Caveman,” a long-form monologue written by Rob Becker but now performed by others, apparently could not hold onto its creative team through any more delays in the schedule. Wyrick still plans to be performing by Feb. 9 and “Caveman” is shopping for another home on the Strip.

Although the landmark La Concha Motel may have met the demolition ball a few years ago, the signature lobby will live on as piece of Vegas history. Last month, the historic concrete shells were moved in eight separate pieces to the Neon Museum’s “Bone Yard” downtown. When it opened in 1961, the La Concha was futuristic hotspot and a favorite of visiting celebrities, but its existence at its original Strip location became threatened by a new development.

With the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears advancing to the Big Game, the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook is ready for a possible record weekend. The Colts (led by the popular QB Peyton Manning) and the Chicago Bears (with its large fan base) might be a record betting event for Nevada bookmakers. Last year a record $94.5 million was wagered on the Big Game in the state of Nevada. “With these two teams making it to the final game, it’s very possible wagering could approach the $100 million mark,” says SuperBook Executive Director Jay Kornegay. The SuperBook posted Indianapolis as a 7 point favored over Chicago and a total of 49 ½. The SuperBook will post approximately 300 different propositions (the most in Nevada) for the game as well. Kickoff is set for 3:25PM Sunday, February 4.

Some great deals just never get made: A few weeks ago musical comedian Stephen Sorrentino had an idea to lease the old Holy Cow! building on Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue (which more recently was the headquarters for Ivana Trump’s doomed Las Vegas high-rise project). Sorrentino’s idea, Wyrick-esque in its inspiration, was to convert the space into a venue for six small showrooms and turn it into an entertainment complex. Sorrentino was told he could not lease the building, but could purchase the parcel for - chop it! - $50 million (space would be worth more if it offered parking). After clearing his throat, Sorrentino said, “No,” and is instead focusing his energy on serving as the first host in the 24-year history of “Legends in Concert” at Imperial Palace. He takes the stage, as himself and as Elton John, on Feb. 12.

Despite the latest controversy surrounding Paula Abdul regarding her “strange behavior,” the Nevada Ballet Theatre is standing behind its decision to honor Abdul as its 2007 “Woman of the Year” at its star-studded gala this Saturday, Jan. 27, at Wynn Las Vegas. Considered to be q premiere social event in Las Vegas, Nevada Ballet Theatre’s Black & White Ball is the organization’s largest fundraiser.

Her warm personality and talent have touched every aspect of the arts and entertainment world. Paula exemplifies the qualities we look for in an honoree.”
This event draws more than 700 people annually, including Las Vegas residents Tony and Jill Curtis, Robert and Vera Goulet and Phyllis McGuire. Among last year’s celebrities were Smokey Robinson and wife Frances, Paula Abdul and Supremes Star Mary Wilson. Celebrities who have attended the Black & White Ball in the past include Walter Cronkite, Tippy Hedren, Shirley MacLaine, Ben Vereen, Liza Minnelli, Dom Deluise, Dick Van Dyke and Joan Collins. A first-class affair and it raises funds for a wonderful organization that is helping put Las Vegas on the world cultural map.

SHOW REVIEW: “Hitzville — The Show”
Bringing Back the Lounge Act: ‘Hitzville — The Show’ recalls the vibe, if not the drink prices, of pre-ultralounge Vegas.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
In 1970, you could see the Ike and Tina Turner Revue in the Las Vegas Hilton’s lounge.
In 1987, you could see live lounge acts singing Tina Turner hits for free in casinos up and down the Strip.
In 2007, a “lounge” has become a place where you pay money to go in and dance, more money to sit down. If you want to see an old-school, pre-ultralounge tribute to Tina and Motown called “Hitzville — The Show,” you’re going to have to buy a ticket because no one else is paying the performers.
But that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for the $12 drinks.

The List Issue (This is really fun stuff)
Reasons CityLife chose to run its annual list issue this week
1. It’s still early; most of us are still recovering from holiday hangovers
2. Won out in staff vote over the “annual macrame issue”
3. Oddly, readers will not blanch at 3,000 words in list form; 3,000 stirring words about a former governor, however …
4. Slow news week: Mayor Oscar Goodman didn’t eject anybody from City Hall, suggest a medieval torture as a municipal punishment or ban things that Jesus would do

Review: Prince By Rick Garman
There is a virtual dictionary’s worth of overused words that are thrown around when discussing the musical talents of Prince: legendary, iconic, and genius are just a few. But with this man there is little risk of hyperbole. He’s just that good. Playing two nights a week in the small-ish former Club Rio space at the Rio in Las Vegas may seem like a step down from his arena packing “Purple Rain” days but see the show and you’ll realize that this is the kind of venue that allows the artist formerly known as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince to settle comfortably into his musical brilliance, play the kind of music he wants (needs?) to play, and perhaps most importantly just have fun.
Back in the day Prince used to play those massive arenas and then show up, often unannounced, at small nightclubs and theaters to jam until the wee hours of the morning, eschewing his mega-hits for lesser known titles and funky, jazz-inspired musical workouts with his band and guests. This show at the Rio is much like those post-concert concerts with a start time that is, at best, fluid and a musical spirit that evokes a more relaxed, less structured event. The Rat Pack used to do it in Vegas; why not Prince?
The doors to the theater open at 8pm and a fierce DJ is on hand to keep things lively until the concert starts. Oh yeah… that starting time thing. Door staff will tell you that Prince “usually takes the stage between 11:30 and 1am.” That’s right: there is no formal starting time. It happens when it happens so your choice is to get their early to stake out prime stage-hugging territory and wait several hours or show up later and still stand around only with slightly less optimum viewing space.
On the night I visited, I staked my claim at around 10:45pm. 3121 is the name of the former Club Rio now, a round theater with a dance floor in the middle and booths and tables lining the edges. General admission tickets allow you to stand on the peripheries or get right up close to the stage on the floor, which by the way is the best non-seat in the house. VIP packages get you the booths and tables, some with bottle service but no worries – there are several bars along the back wall. As concert venues go, it’s a fine one since you’re pretty close no matter where you land; no binoculars needed here.
The curtain finally went up at around 12:30am, revealing a largely undressed stage (some fluorescent paint on the exposed electrical conduits and a circular staircase to a “lounge” for the horn section of the band were about it). Backed by a small combo (bass, drums, one or two keyboardists varying, and three horn players plus two dancers/back-up singers), Prince launched into the funky title track from his latest album, “3121” followed quickly by more cuts from that disc including “Lolita” and “Black Sweat.”
For the next two hours plus, he worked his way through a non-stop barrage of some of his best music, although for casual fans the monster-sized hits were mostly absent. True, he did do “Kiss” and for an encore “Purple Rain” and “Let’s Go Crazy,” but those were abbreviated and revamped versions. So no “Controversy,” “1999,” “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Raspberry Beret,” or “Diamonds and Pearls.” Instead, the Prince faithful got rarely performed gems like “Anotherloverholenyohead,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “Joy in Repetition,” “7,” and “Pink Cashmere,” mixed in with a cover of Wild Cherry’s “Play That Funky Music” and several, extended instrumental jams featuring guest saxophonist Maceo Parker.
For some in the audience, this was an obvious disappointment – the club was definitely less crowded when the show ended at around 2:45am than when it started. If you are one of those casual fans, that shouldn’t preclude you from going to see the show. As I understand it, the concert is different almost every single night and what gets played depends heavily on Prince’s moods and whims so you might get two hours of non-stop hits or two hours of even more obscure tracks than the ones I heard.
But dedicated Prince fans and anyone with an appreciation for genius-level musicianship couldn’t have been pried away with a crowbar. Watching the man sing, dance, and play almost every instrument on stage with virtuoso level accomplishment is stunning and at times breathtaking.
I am one of those dedicated Prince fans and have seen him in concert many times, but something is different now. I’ve never seen him so relaxed, so jovial and comfortable. Whether he was joking with the audience or wading into it to pull people on stage to dance with him, his energy came off as distinctly more playful, approachable, and human than the cipher of days past.
Perhaps that spirit is best summed up from the lyrics of one of my all-time favorite Prince tracks (one he performed to my delight during the show) “Forever in My Life” from the 1987 “Sign O’ The Times” album: “There comes a time, in every man’s life/when he gets tired of foolin’ around… I never imagined that love would rain on me/and make me want to settle down.”
Whatever the reason for settling down in Vegas, we are thankful. I’ve always said that in 200 years people will look back at Prince’s music the way we look at Beethoven’s today, and while some will say that crosses over into the hyperbole I was having trouble finding earlier, go see this show and you’ll understand why it isn’t.
Prince performs every Friday and Saturday and presents other artists on Wednesday nights in the 3121 club. Recent guests have included Chaka Kahn, Esthero, Larry Graham with Maceo Parker, and more but for a schedule of who will be playing when you are in town, visit the official 3121.com website.

Slot Reviews By Gayle Mitchell
1) Phoenix Gold:IGT. 7 spins. 85-98%.
For ‘nudge’ slot fans, this 3-reel single payline slot is sure to please.
If the screen reveals a single, double or triple bar symbols accompanied by arrows above or below the payline, then you are in ‘for a nudge’ towards a win. Additionally, there are multipliers that double or triple the jackpot plus two doubles=4X and two triples=9X. If you line up a Double and a Triple, you have entered 6X jackpot territory.
When a Phoenix Gold symbol arrives on the payline with max coin in play, the top box bonus event occurs with bundles of cash and arrows alit and a ‘Take Shot’ symbol.
Either you receive a bonus amount or if the ‘Take Shot’ is lit, you get a second bonus until the round ends. The two top jackpots consist of a single, double and triple symbol paying 2500 coins for max play or 3 triple symbols paying 4000 coins for max play. This game will prove ‘golden’ to players with the many win combinations offered up.
2) Pharaoh’s Gold: IGT 3 spins. 88-98%.
Another ‘golden’ slot from IGT, this game’s three right hand symbols in the middle row are always active. Each five coins bet activates one vertical row, therefore a 25 max bet allows the players a possible win 243 ways.
Of course, a max bet increases the numbers of ways you can win, however a quarter/spin will keep you in the game. Bonus features include free spins and wild symbols=mounting credits.
Three or more Pharaoh’s Gold symbols will set you up with free spins and possible re-spins.
This penny slot will accept a $12.50 max bet/pull for a big strike of $1250 while scatter pays result in a 100X payoff.
I suggest you start slow and increase your wager heading towards ‘the big gold strike’.
3) Passion Coast: Atronic. 2 spins. 88-94%.
There are 243 ‘Super Play’ combos waiting in the tropical setting before you by this graphically rich slot version.
You activate this Super Play Mode with a minimum of 30 credits/line or a lesser amount of credits allows winners on certain activated paylines.
At the time 3, 4 or 5 parrots are scattered from left to right, a bonus amount is paid and thus begins either 10, 15 or 25 free games at which time the Rio is wild. This wild symbol can pay out triple, 5X or 15X jackpots depending on which reel(s) it lands.
Respins are possible if 3 or more parrots appear on the initial freebie spin.
With the Super Play Mode option, you can ‘coast’ and then accelerate quickly resulting in numerous credits.
There is always a welcome mat out to new subscribers.
I encourage you to invite your family and friends to join us.

Brett’s Vegas Views by Jackie Brett
The Golden Nugget has been Downtown’s jewel ever since Steve Wynn owned it and been a winner of the AAA Four-Diamond award for 29 consecutive years, which is a Nevada record. Now owned by Landry’s Restaurants, Inc. since September 2005, the 1,907 deluxe guest room and suite resort embarked on a 14-month, $100 million renovation project last year that was completed this month. The changes have left the property even more luxurious and elegant.
The most magnificent and dramatic change is the pool attraction. The centerpiece is The Tank, a $20 million, pool complete with the Dive Bar, cabanas, an aquarium and three- story waterslide. The 200,000-gallon shark aquarium features five species of sharks and various game fish.
Other spectacular wide-sale renovations include several new restaurants. Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse opened last December, Lillie’s Noodle House opened last February, and the Grotto Italian Ristorante that is open for lunch and dinner opened in October. The Grotto is the first location outside of Texas for the eatery and the second Landry’s concept to open at the property. The Buffet that used to be located on the main casino floor has been relocated to the second floor with easy escalator access. The Carson Street Café has undergone a makeover as well.
Even more renovations include a newly-renovated spa, a major renovation to enlarge the showroom to a 600-seat theater, a totally remodeled gaming floor, a new “no limit” poker room, a relocated and new country-club-style Race & Sports Book, a high-limit slot salon and the beautiful gold and brown toned RUSH Lounge. Even the North Tower lobby was remodeled, the porte-cochere was renovated, and Keno Lounge, VIP lounge, Perfect Timing high-end watch shop and Style & Trend clothing boutique were added.
The Santa Fe has unveiled the first phase of its $130 million multi-phase expansion, which was designed to offer more amenities and convenience. The resort has opened the majority of its expansion now and will continue to open up additional offerings by summer 2007. This expansion is one of four property expansions in various planning stages by Station Casinos. Expansions at Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa, Green Valley Ranch and Fiesta Henderson are scheduled for completion by mid-2007.
The highlights of the Santa Fe’s recent expansion include: a new 2,900-space, five-level parking garage; a new 259-seat Rack & Sports Book featuring a five-screen, 114-foot video wall; two new restaurants - the Feast Buffet and Turf Grill; additional casino floor space with more than 400 slot / video poker machines; and 6,000 square feet of additional meeting and convention space bringing the total to more than 14,000 square feet. A new high-limit slot area will open Dec. 7.
Additional offerings that will open up through summer 2007 include a new poker room, two additional restaurants including Tides Oyster Bar and Salt Lick BBQ, and a Center Bar concept.

The new live concert production “The Musical History of the King” starring Elvis impersonator Trent Carlini opened this weekend at the Sahara. Shows are at 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and ticket prices start at $49, call 702-737-2515.
Carlini has signed a one-year deal for his musical show portraying the singing career of Elvis Presley. “The Musical History of The King” has songs from the ’50s era when Presley’s first big hits were on the radio, then from his movies, followed by his “comeback years” at the sold out Las Vegas concerts. A couple years ago, Carlini had a run with his show at the Las Vegas Hilton.
The MGM Mirage will open CityCenter’s 28,970-square-foot Residential Sales Pavilion to the public at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2. The Pavilion is located on the Strip between New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts with parking and the entrance situated on the west side of the building.
With the opening of the Pavilion, three of CityCenter’s four residential developments will be released to the public for reservations: Vdara Condo Hotel, designed by RV Architecture LLC led by Rafael Vi¤oly; Veer Towers designed by Helmut Jahn; and The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, designed by KPF Architects. Residences at The Harmon, designed by Foster and Partners, will be released later in 2007.
The Pavilion will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and boast the most technologically advanced design capabilities available to give visitors an intimate understanding of CityCenter’s approximately 2,700 luxury residences. The Pavilion will showcase full-scale models, unit locations, floor plans and the multitude of interior design options available.
CityCenter is MGM Mirage’s $7 billion city-within-a-city that will open on the Las Vegas Strip in November 2009. It’s the largest privately financed project in the history of North America and has been designed by seven of the world’s foremost architects. CityCenter combines private residences, boutique hotels including Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, a resort casino and a retail and entertainment district into a single urban core.
The original play, “Forever Plaid - A Heavenly Musical Hit” will return to the Gold Coast on Feb. 6, and will close on April 1. Since opening at the Gold Coast in Jan. 2005, “Forever Plaid” has been a hit highlighting ’50s and’60s music through a wholesome story with never-ending comedic banter.
Prior to opening at the Gold Coast, the Las Vegas production had a successful six-year run at the Flamingo from 1995 to 2001. The long-running off-Broadway revue featuring four bow-tied harmonizing young men has given over 4,000 performances in Las Vegas. It is the first “Forever Plaid” production to reach this many performances. “Forever Plaid” first opened in New York on May 20, 1990, and ran for more than four years.
Illusionist Steve Wyrick has announced that the Steve Wyrick Entertainment Complex inside the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood will open in early January. The multi-million dollar complex will house the Steve Wyrick Theatre, Magic Shoppe, and TRIQ Ultra Lounge.
The 33,000-square-foot four-level complex will encompass the 500-seat Steve Wyrick Theatre that will feature daily performances from renowned ventriloquist Ronn Lucas at 3 p.m., internationally recognized crooner Martin Nievera at 5 p.m., master illusionist “Steve Wyrick: Real Magic” at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and the one-man Broadway hit “Defending the Caveman” at 10:30 p.m.
Over the holidays, Palace Station opened a completely redesigned Feast Buffet. The newly designed buffet features seating for 340 and five live action food stations including American, Asian, Italian bistro, South of the Border (Mexican) and traditional BBQ. The buffet’s new look incorporates modern elements such as curvilinear silver and glass light fixtures with warm accents such as orange mosaic glass tiles and granite countertops. There’s also lower pricing. Children between the ages of four and ten receive $1 off the regular price, and children three and under are free.
Oxford Publishing, the publisher of “Nightclub & Bar Magazine,” has announced the 2007 edition of the Editors Choice Top 100 Nightclub and Bars in the country. In alphabetical order, the Sin City clubs include: Body English (Hard Rock), Cherry (Red Rock), ghostbar (Palms), JET Nightclub (The Mirage), Kahunaville (Treasure Island), Light Nightclub (Bellagio), The Playboy Club (Palms), PURE Nightclub (Caesars Palace), rumjungle (Mandalay Bay), Studio 54 (MGM Grand), Tabu Ultra Lounge (MGM Grand), Tangerine (Treasure Island), TAO Las Vegas (Venetian) and Tryst (Wynn Las Vegas). The Editors Choice list rates nightclubs and lounges all over the country on a variety of criteria, including popularity, originality, impact on the local and national scene, and creativity behind the outlet.

Growing in 2007
Las Vegas will see changes in casinos, hotels and entertainment.
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal
Well, we’re into the new year and like most people, I’m sure you’ve all made resolutions, none of which you’ll keep, but it makes us feel good to think we’re going to somehow better our lives in the coming year. Mine is to try and make more money in the casinos than I did in 2006, which shouldn’t be too difficult as I can’t imagine me losing more. But with a smile on my face and a song in my heart, I will give it my best shot and I hope all of you fill your pockets as well.
It’s going to be another exciting year in Las Vegas as a number of new properties move forward in their construction, new shows open and new owners take over the world’s largest casino company — Harrah’s. The much-awaited changes at the Aladdin should be completed and the megaresort finally will become Planet Hollywood. MGM Mirage’s $8-billion CityCentre project will be rising like a Phoenix on the Strip. The Stardust will be imploded to make way for Boyd Gaming’s $4 billion Echelon Place, plus the three boutique hotels that will occupy the same site.
And next door at the New Frontier, we should see the Trump Tower, a condominium project that I hear has been sold out, coming to the end its construction. The Venetian’s Palazzo, a separate 3,000-room resort adjacent to The Venetian, should open its doors late in the year. Then there’s a ton of other projects on the drawing board that I won’t even mention, but suffice it to say that most of them will get started this year.
Investors obviously have a lot of confidence in the future of Las Vegas and with so much expansion, it looks like we’ll continue to lead the nation in growth, much to my disappointment. I’m told we will have a population topping 2 million by 2010 and I can well believe it as some 6,000 people a month come pouring in. Thank God some are leaving or we’d probably reach 5 million. All of this, however, is good news for the economy. Once we get our second airport built just south of the city we will probably see a major increase in tourism, well up from our 40-plus million visitors a year.
And then there’s the entertainment. Two major Broadway shows coming our way this year — “The Producers” and “Spamalot.” Both were major hits in New York, but will they fly here? We had high hopes for “Hairspray” and “Avenue Q,” two great shows but neither could last a year. It will be interesting to see if these survive. I have high hopes for “The Producers” as it has garnered a lot of publicity, won a lot of awards and was made into a movie, so it has the recognition factor going for it. “Spamalot,” on the other hand, which I’m sure is hilarious as it’s a Monty Python creation, hasn’t had the buzz nationwide, so might be a hard sell. We’ll see.

YEAR IN ENTERTAINMENT 2006: THE STRIP: ‘Phantom’ proves big musical can succeed in Las Vegas.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Some years, filling up the side of a pyramid with your show’s logo would be enough.
But in 2006, no amount of unique advertising could save “Hairspray,” the Broadway musical whose quick and untimely death is explained by several complicated factors, the two easiest to comprehend being these: the Beatles and “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Those shows hinted at what it takes — either the world’s biggest band or its biggest-grossing musical — for a Las Vegas show to compete with the nightclub lines that stretch longer every night.
For pure return on investment, however, the year’s biggest hit has to be one you won’t find on this list, which doesn’t add points for box office success (or subtract them for rip-off ticket prices). “Menopause The Musical” packs them in seven days per week in the Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret. Innovation breeds imitation on the Strip, so this raises hopes for more smaller venues down the road.

YEAR IN ENTERTAINMENT 2006: RESTAURANTS: Blow the rent money just once and try L’Atelier Joël Robuchon,
By Heidi Knapp Rinella/Las Vegas Review Journal
So many restaurants, so little space.
It’s always a difficult task to whittle the city’s restaurants to my 10 favorites in a given year — and, with the ever-higher bar boosting the quality of dining across the valley, it’s a task that annually grows more daunting.
This year’s list includes only restaurants I visited, on the job, during 2006. Three of them are at Wynn Las Vegas; that’s indicative of the degree of dedication to quality I’ve seen in that resort’s restaurants. And not all of them are as blow-the-rent as you may think.
Which brings me to the more downscale members of this list: I evaluate each restaurant on its own merits, and what all of these on this list have in common is this: They’re absolutely excellent at what they do.

SHOOTING STARS: 2007 production calendar busy.
By Carol Cling/Las Vegas Review Journal
Out with the old, in with the new.
Unless, of course, the subject is Las Vegas’ 2007 production calendar, which includes both newcomers and holdovers.
Leading the latter: A&E’s “Criss Angel: Mindfreak,” in residence at the Luxor through March to focus on the title illusionist.
Later this month, the Cinemax series “Sin City Diaries” — about a high-roller concierge service — begins production at Media Underground.

PHOTOS: New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2007/Jan-02-Tue-2007/news/11735886.html
NORM: Rees scandal might get bigger.
Katie Rees, the dethroned Miss Nevada USA 2007, partied in a Las Vegas topless club on New Year’s Eve amid rumblings of a widening sex scandal.
Rees, who was spotted at the topless club Seamless in the wee hours of New Year’s Day, is facing new allegations that involve two unnamed Las Vegas celebrities, sources say.
Rees, a former Florida resident who won the Nevada title in October, was stripped of her title last month after pornographic photos of her surfaced on a Web site associated with escort services.
Rees, 25, whose mother is a Miss America pageant director in Tampa, Fla., asked for the second chance that Miss USA Tara Connor received, saying her photo missteps were a one-time thing.
KVBC-TV, Channel 3, reporter Alicia Jacobs, who broke the initial story on Rees’ bad behavior, reported Thursday that the Nevada Miss USA organizers had reason to believe the scandal was far from over.
More allegations are coming, Jacobs said in her report.

Marilyn, Blues Brothers Join ‘Legends in Concert’
Popular Impersonators Return to IP Celebrity Tribute Show.
“Legends in Concert,” the celebrity tribute show at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino, kicks off 2007 with the return of two popular acts – Marilyn Monroe and the Blues Brothers.
Beginning Monday, Jan. 8, Stacey Whitton performs as the blonde bombshell, and Dan Meisner and Joe Messina once again bring audiences to their feet as Jake and Elwood Blues, respectively, as they fill the showroom with a jumping, toe-tapping, fun-loving frenzy.
Whitton began performing at age 9 with the New Penny Singers. She shows two distinct sides in her performance of the stunning super starlet of the ‘50s and ‘60s, moving with ease from glamour gal to girl next door. She sings “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” “I Wanna Be Loved By You,” “My Heart Belongs to Daddy” and “Bye Bye Baby.” Whitton last appeared in ”Legends” September 2005 as Shania Twain.
As with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, who originated the Blues Brothers characters on “Saturday Night Live,” Meisner and Messina are dynamic actors – plus they are accomplished musicians. Both began performing at age 14. Meisner began his Jake impersonation at a high school lip-sync show. Messina began his impersonator career as Beetlejuice while working as a sound technician at Universal Studios in Florida.
The Blues Brothers perform “Can’t Turn You Loose,” “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love,” “Flip, Flop & Fly,” “Expressway to Your Heart,” ”Rubber Biscuit” and “Soul Man.” Meisner and Messina last appeared in ”Legends” in January 2006.
Marilyn Monroe and the Blues Brothers replace Garth Brooks and Sting in the current lineup, which also includes Britney Spears, Bobby Darin, the Temptations and Elvis Presley. Matt Lewis continues to leave ladies swooning in the aisles with his boyish good looks, commanding voice and dead-ringer compelling impersonation of the truck driver from Tupelo who would become the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
“Legends in Concert,” in its 24th year, is a full-production spectacular with dancers, singers and live musicians. Enjoy incredible look-alike and sound-alike performances of an ever-changing lineup of superstars. Shows nightly at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. except Sunday. Tickets are $49.95 and $59.95; children 12 and under beginning at $34.95. Dinner and show packages are available. For reservations, call 702.794.3261 or toll-free 888.777.7664. Tropicana gets new ownership
Columbia Sussex completes purchase of Aztar.
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
Kentucky-based Columbia Sussex Corp. became the owner of the Tropicana and three other casinos Wednesday after completing a $2.75 billion buyout of Aztar Corp.
The deal, which was initially announced almost eight months ago, gives new life to the 1,880-room Strip icon, although the new owners plan to demolish and remodel much of the 34-acre site over the next two years.
In November, while winning licensing approval from Nevada gaming regulators, Columbia Sussex officials said they would spend $2 billion to remodel the Tropicana, giving the site more than 9,000 hotel rooms and an additional hotel brand.

Great show with a great value.
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal.
At a time when most shows in Las Vegas are costing almost as much as a mortgage payment, it’s refreshing to find one that is not only ridiculously reasonable, but provides great fun for the whole family.
I’m talking about The Mac King Comedy Magic Show in the Clint Holmes Theater at Harrah’s every Tuesday through Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. The star, of course, is the extremely likeable and talented King, a comedic magician and author who has become a staple on the Las Vegas entertainment scene and who has branched out to having his own comic strip.
This native of Kentucky has been performing at Harrah’s since 2000, much to the delight of kids and their parents with his off -the-wall effects involving Fig Newtons and goldfish, to name a few, as well as his trademark yellow raincoat that he claims is a magic cloak of invisibility.
He and fellow Kentuckian and Las Vegas performer, Lance Burton have been close friends since doing magic together in theme parks while they were going to college, and fellow Las Vegas headline performers Penn & Teller refer to King as a “god.” Quite a tribute from two of the best magicians in the business.
It’s easy to see why. His unique talent and boyish manner creates an instant rapport with his audience. So much in fact, that he met his wife of more than 20 years when she became an audience participant in one of his shows. Great way to get dates.
As for his act, which I will not go into detail and spoil it for you, I love the story about one of his most memorable moments on stage while performing his Cut and Restored Rope routine. King has said that one of his biggest pet peeves are magician’s with dull scissors, and he makes it a point to keep his scissors razor sharp. While performing the routine, he accidentally severed the tip of his thumb.
He tried to stop the bleeding by wrapping his thumb in tape, but the injury was too severe and he later asked the audience if there was a nurse present. He was lucky that night, and a nurse did step forward and was able to stop the bleeding. But King continued with his show, as well doing his second show, before going to the hospital to have the cut treated. Talk about “the show must go on” tradition.
I mentioned at the start about King’s show being great value. Tickets are only $19.95 plus tax. If you’re taking your kids, they have to be 5 and older. If you want to find more about Mac King and his show, check him out at at www.mackingshow.com.

SUPER BOWL BETTING: Books like looks of Colts.
Indianapolis placed on 7-point pedestal in early line for Feb. 4 game.
By Matt Youmans/Las Vegas Review Journal
In a Super Bowl matchup made in heaven for Las Vegas sports books, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will challenge the Chicago Bears and their monstrous defense.
The Colts are 7-point favorites over the Bears in Super Bowl XLI, which will be played Feb. 4 in Miami.
“I think this will be as good as you can get,” MGM Mirage sports book director Robert Walker said after opening the line Sunday night.
“I’m kind of excited to see Manning against the Bears’ defense.”This is the kind of matchup where we’ll do record business.”

From “The Vegas Eye”
Right Again!
They say “When it rains, it pours.” Well, as far as breaking scoops go, this week’s Vegas Eye is a monsoon, with “official” press releases going out confirming not one, not two, but three breaking scoops we gave to our readers as far back as 10 months ago! Here are three stories that reinforce why you love reading the Eye!
* Seven weeks ago, we broke the news of a planned expansion for popular Times Square eatery the Hawaiian Tropic Zone (Eye on Vegas Archives – 12/05/06) As reported, the restaurant, which is going into the Desert Passage shops, will sport a three-level dining room, catwalk stage for nightly entertainment, and beautiful table concierges who will compete in nightly beauty pageants. “We are very excited to have Hawaiian Tropic Zone bring its creative blend of dining, entertainment, and nightlife to Desert Passage,” said David Edelstein, co-owner of Desert Passage. “Hawaiian Tropic Zone’s innovative and energetic atmosphere is yet another example of the electrifying transformations occurring as we evolve into Miracle Mile Shops.”
* We were the first to tell you that the adult-movie-come-Strip-production show, The Fashionistas, would be making the move to the Empire Ballroom (Eye on Vegas Archives – 12/05/06) and it’s now official. The show will kick-off on Thursday, Feb. 8. The show had been housed at the nearby Harmon Theater, but creator and producer John Stagliano felt that the alternative-focused Krave Nightclub, which shares the same space as the theater, had kept potential guests away from the production. Both parties are excited about the new partnership and feel they will help each other further establish themselves in Las Vegas.
* For this story’s original print run, you have to go all the way back to March 7, 2006, (Eye on Vegas Archives) when we announced that nationally owned nightlife chain Polly Ester’s had set its sights on a Sin City invasion, using the Stratosphere as its base of operations. We also reported that the club was essentially four clubs within a club, each segmented by era: Polly Ester’s (70s), The Culture Club (80s), NerveAna (90s) and Suite 2000 for the modern era. A press release announcing all the old news hit media organizations this morning.
Turning Dolls into Dealers
Caesars Palace has announced the creation of the Pussycat Dolls Casino, which will be unveiled next month. Essentially more of a themed gaming pit than a self-contained casino or gaming lounge, it will be located across from the Pussycat Dolls Lounge at PURE Nightclub. nightclub. With branded slot machines, blackjack, craps and roulette tables, as well as a Big 6 wheel and merchandise area, expect pink table fabrics, leopard-print chairs, sexy uniforms for dealers, go-go dancers and even table legs adorning fishnet tights and stiletto heels. ”The fact that we’re going to have an entire gaming area within Caesars Palace,” noted Pussycat Dolls Casino creator Robin Antin, “speaks volumes to the quality of the Pussycat Dolls brand and the experience this will offer guests.”
Hungry for More
We finally got a chance to check out JR’s Place, the super-hot gaming bar and Italian restaurant at South Durango and I-215. We’ve been meaning to stop by to see executive chef and owner Susan Rispoli since we first wrote about her opening awhile back. After our visit last week, we can’t believe it took us so long. Rispoli is serving up quite possibly the best Italian fare off The Strip, with authentic “Old Country” recipes that have been passed down through her family. The best part about JR’s Place, other than the fare, of course, is that the full menu is served 24-hours a day without exception. With dishes like the Meatball Appetizer, which is simply phenomenal, it’s no wonder that it’s become a hotspot for local celebrities like Glen “The Heavy Hitter” Lerner, Frankie Scinta and Towbin empire heir “The Chopper.” What makes the food so fantastic is that Rispoli isn’t letting local limitations set her standards. For example, when she couldn’t find Ricotta cheese to her liking, she started importing it from her native New York. Adding to the atmosphere is Rispoli herself – a bubbly chef who charms in the dining room nearly as much as her food thrills on the plate. We highly recommend checking out JR’s Place, we promise that you won’t be disappointed. Two words for you: rice pudding!
