Equity firms buy Harrah’s in deal worth $27.8 billion World’s largest casino operator attracts record purchase price.
By Howard Sturtz/Las Vgeas Review Journal

Casino giant Harrah’s Entertainment will be owned by two private equity firms in an all-cash deal worth $27.8 billion, the largest-ever transaction for a gaming company and one of the largest-ever leveraged buyouts of an American corporation. The deal, which had been brewing since Oct. 2, was announced Tuesday afternoon after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange and will take Las Vegas-based Harrah’s, the world’s largest casino operator, private and out of the traditional public markets.

Sources said financial terms of the buyout were agreed upon in principal last week. New York-based Apollo Management and Texas Pacific Group of Fort Worth, Texas, committed to pay $90 a share to buy approximately 190 million outstanding shares of Harrah’s Entertainment, or $17.1 billion. In addition, the firms will assume the company’s $10.7 billion debt.

Sale could cut Harrah’s plans short .
Private equity firms buying company may not see project through.
By Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun
With word that the board of directors at Harrah’s Entertainment will accept a private buyout offer at $90 per share, observers say the company has reached a crossroads and may sacrifice long-term prospects in favor of short-term gains.

Private equity firms like those buying Harrah’s attract money from pension plans, endowments and other investors who measure profits over years versus, say, hedge funds and other investors that jump in and out of stocks every few months.

But there’s a potential downside to a private equity buyout of Harrah’s. These firms, who buy companies with an eye toward selling them in five to seven years, are typically loath to invest in projects that may take longer to come to fruition. Harrah’s is currently pursuing just that sort of project, having announced plans to revamp its center Strip properties by remodeling, expanding and touching up casinos to create a more unified neighborhood.

Osborne, who has entertained presidents for the past five administrations, performed at three White House holiday parties a week ago.

That lineup is performing in “Original Idols Live!” Tickets are $59 to $99, and the show is one … night … only.

Nothing confirmed on this, but we hear the reason muscular former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Joe Piscopo recently canceled a set of dates at the Suncoast Showroom is he is booked to perform an extended engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, construction (and deconstruction) crews began slicing and loading the lobby of the La Concha Motel onto flatbed trucks, where it is being relocated to the Neon Boneyard on Las Vegas Boulevard North, next to Cashman Field. The lobby, designed by renowned architect Paul Revere Williams, is to become the visitors center, gallery and gift shop of the Neon Museum. The slice-and-dice project should be completed Friday.

The good news at “Phantom – Las Vegas Spectacular” is that the chandelier that is the breathtaking centerpiece of the $40 million theater at the Venetian has not malfunctioned since previews in June. MIKE WEATHERFORD: Matinee competition heating up.When the closing of the Sands moved “Viva Las Vegas” to the Stratosphere in late 1996, the afternoon minirevue competed with only two established matinees. Both comic magician Nick Lewin and the “Bottom’s Up” revue were priced at 10 bucks, and Lewin’s show included two drinks. Now, as “Viva” prepares to pack it up at the Stratosphere on Dec. 30 and seeks a new home, afternoons are a crowded playing field.

Magicians such as Dirk Arthur and Rick Thomas — the latter opening at The Orleans on Monday — offer elaborate staging that breaks the spare, “front of curtain” afternoon formula. And the variety act Society of Seven is essentially an evening show crowded out by the intense, big-budget competition at night.

Holiday cheer decked in ‘Plaid’
Yule version of popular show offers glad ‘Tidings’
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
“Plaid Tidings” will create enough pleasant memories to keep you warm throughout the winter.

Good harmony is always in season, but this yule version of “Forever Plaid” is something special, one that is worthy of becoming a family’s Christmas tradition.

We get enough of the floor-shaking, ear-splitting, rave-driven, sex-crazed music the rest of the year.

It’s nice to be able to step into a different world for a change, an innocent world void of four-letter words, screaming, anger or bitterness.

Vegas4Visitors Top 10 Awards

Is it that time of the year already? Yes, apparently 2006 is winding down and that means it’s time once again for the Vegas4Visitors Top 10 Awards, the 8th Annual edition believe it or not. Now, careful long time readers may say that technically this should be the 7th Annual edition since last year I changed the format and didn’t do Top 10 lists. I had argued that comparing a luxury hotel against a bargain one or a $30 buffet against a $10 one wasn’t a fair fight. However, many of my readers complained, vociferously, and so the Top 10 format is back for 2006.All I ask is that you keep in mind that just because a hotel, show, restaurant, or whatever places at #6 instead of #3, it doesn’t necessarily mean I think it’s not as good and certainly doesn’t mean that you won’t like it better. This is strictly my opinion. Now, it’s true that I’ve been writing about Las Vegas for a decade now and that I’ve visited every single one of these places, often many times, and that gives me a perspective that many Vegas visitors don’t have but ultimately it’s still just my opinion. You don’t have to agree with me but until you get your own Vegas column, you’re just going to have to put up with me pontificating about what I think is best.

Before we get to the awards, a quick programming note: this will be the last column of 2006 as I take a couple of weeks off for the holidays. The Vegas4Visitors.com Weekly Column will return on January 8, 2007. Have a happy and safe holiday!

Now… what was I saying about awards? Oh right… and the winners are…

Top 10 Hotels#1 – Red Rock Station
If this hotel was located about 10 miles east of its location and cost about $100 less per night it would be perfect. Truly, perfect. With its deliriously luxurious rooms, amazing views of the city or Red Rock Canyon, a stunning casino, multiple choices of very fine to casual dining, terrific nightlife, a beautiful pool and spa, and world-class service, Red Rock is what most Vegas hotels want to be when they grow up – and it did all that in its first year of existence. Once you have all that, the location and cost issues barely register on the radar. The Best Hotel in Las Vegas.
#2 – Green Valley Ranch
This place just keeps getting better and better, with a recent expansion that has added even more shine to an already sparkling gem of a hotel. Like its sister Red Rock, luxury is the key here and also, similarly, location and cost can be prohibitive for some Las Vegas visitors. But if you’re going to be spending more than $200 a night for a hotel room, don’t you want one that pampers you, surrounding you at every turn with the type of amenities, service, and appointments that qualify as “resort” level? It’s hard to do that in a hotel with 3,000 rooms like the supposed “resorts” on The Strip, but Green Valley Ranch proves the old maxim that bigger is not always better.

#3 – Bally’s
What if they built a hotel with comfortably sized rooms, modern furnishings and conveniences, a large but not overwhelming casino, and plenty of good restaurants and then plunked it down in the heart of all of the Las Vegas action and priced it at about half of what its neighbors are charging? They did, more than 30 years ago, and today Bally’s continues to be the best bargain on The Las Vegas Strip, providing upscale accommodations and service without the upscale prices.

#4 – The Mirage
It’s hard to overstate the importance The Mirage had on the evolution of this city. Before it, the concepts of luxury accommodations, fine dining, premiere entertainment, and simple matters of “scale” were virtually nowhere to be found. But The Mirage changed all that and while many hotels came along afterward and overshadowed it, they were still capitalizing on lessons learned and even created at this hotel. Now, The Mirage has undergone a dramatic multi-million dollar upgrade, turning what had become a B-level hotel (strictly by comparison mind you) back into an A-level player. The Mirage has once again stepped into the limelight.

#5 – The Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas
We’re spending a lot of time off The Strip so far on this list, but one visit to this little slice of heaven and you’ll understand why. The rooms are a sensorial feast – the feel, the look, and even the scents are all top of the mark. But really the thing that sets The Ritz apart from other hotels in this city is the level of service you receive – almost as if every employee knows you personally and considers you to be the most important person on the planet. It’s a great feeling and one that makes a stay at The Ritz unlike any other.

#6 – The Golden Nugget
You may be shocked to see this hotel on this list, but if you are you haven’t been there recently. They have just completed the bulk of the work on a major top to bottom overhaul that has turned what had become the epitome of “faded glory” back into the Grande Dame of the Downtown. But putting that Downtown qualifier on there is no longer necessary. With its beautiful new casino, showroom, restaurants, and more, this hotel can now compete with the big boys on The Strip.

#7 – THEhotel
Still hate the name, still love the hotel. Every room is a true, multi-room suite and all of them come with the type of upscale amenities that will make you never want to leave. The fact that you can get in and out without ever stepping foot in a casino is a big bonus for some and the fact that said casino is just a short walk down a hallway is an even bigger bonus for others. Expensive but worth it, THEhotel remains a top choice for luxury accommodations on The Strip.

#8 – Wynn Las Vegas
Wander around the public areas of this place and it’s easy to wonder where the $2.8 billion they spent on this place went. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful hotel, filled with lots of luxury detail but in the end it’s not all that different from Bellagio or many of the other palaces on The Strip – just the paint colors and fabrics are different. Then you go to your room and you say, “Ohhhhh, now I see it.” These monster sized accommodations swaddle you in luxury, from the pillowy beds to the rock-star bathrooms. True, with rates like these (usually the highest in town), they better be good, but here’s the good news: they are.

#9 – Caesars Palace
No, it’s not just because they are bringing in Bette Midler and Cher to replace Celine Dion in 2008. Instead, it’s because it would’ve been easy during the massive, multi-billion-dollar renovations of the last few years, to lose what made Caesars famous in the first place: its sense of bacchanalian excess. It would’ve been even easier to tear it down and start over. But instead, the folks who run this place improved upon it, adding truly luxury accommodations, world-class dining and entertainment, and more. Rome never looked this good.

#10 – Main Street Station
Just because The Golden Nugget has once again asserted its dominance in the Downtown playground doesn’t mean you should overlook this gem of a property. The rooms are simple but very comfortable, the casino is terrific, dining options are fantastic, and rates are bargain basement. If you’re looking for a truly affordable Las Vegas vacation without sacrificing so much that you no longer enjoy yourself, call Main Street Station.

Top 10 Shows#1 – Rita Rudner
There are no showgirls or disappearing helicopters or oddly dressed acrobats, but Rita Rudner proves time and time again that simplicity is its own reward by providing the most entertaining show in Las Vegas. This is like attending a master-class in comedy, with humor that is easy to identify with, impeccable timing, and so many belly laughs that you’ll practically ache when you leave the theater, all at a price that won’t make you wince when you’re buying tickets. The Queen of Comedy is Rita Rudner and she has The Best Show in Las Vegas.
#2 – Mystere
The show that introduced Cirque du Soleil to Las Vegas is still the best in town, with mind-bending acrobatics and awe-inspiring theatricality that will both thrill and amaze. Haunting, evocative, startling, funny, sexy, and astounding, Mystere proves why the others are mere pretenders to the throne.

#3 – Prince
Who would’ve thought that “His Royal Badness” would ever settle down at a small-ish club in Vegas and put on a show that puts other headliner entertainment to shame? Well, the last part is no great surprise because he proved a long time ago that he is one of the best showmen in the business but this intimate concert solidifies that title, highlights his prodigy-level musicianship, and makes you want to dance until dawn.

#4 – KA
Putting the Cirque magic into a linear storyline was not an easy feat, but KA tells a heart-tugging story of family love in a staging that will make you accuse your eyes of lying to your brain. Visually stunning and emotionally resonant, KA is unlike any other Cirque show but with all of things that made the brand great in the first place.

#5 – Mac King
In the Rita Rudner blurb I mentioned the reward of simplicity and nowhere is that more evident than in Mac King’s tremendous afternoon show at Harrah’s. Eschewing the kind of mechanically-dependent illusions that most magicians in this town depend upon, King still amazes with simple tricks, laugh-out-loud humor, and a general sense of fun that make the ridiculously low ticket price a no-brainer.

#6 – Lance Burton
On the other end of the magic spectrum in terms of scale is Lance Burton, a man who deserves the title he has given himself: master magician. He performs a heady mix of big illusions and up-close magic that will leave you gasping, but does it all with a genial “good ole boy” attitude that will leave you charmed.

#7 – Second City Improv
Most people only wish they could think as fast as this talented band of sketch and improv comedians who turn comedy into a gonzo, take-no-prisoners wave of laughter. Their skillful dissections of everything from relationships to Las Vegas will leave you rolling in the aisles.

#8 – Elton John
Heavy on the hits that made him famous, Elton John’s show at Caesars Palace is like playing the soundtrack of the last 35 years of your life. All he does is sit behind the piano and play and sing while various special effects and videos play behind him, but this is music at its best and the man is a master at it.

#9 – Penn & Teller
If you aren’t a fan of magic and illusions, this is the show for you, because Penn & Teller are not merely magicians – they are educators and philosophers, teaching you to think about what you are seeing instead of merely seeing it. It’s hard to imagine that you can still be amazed by a magic trick when they basically tell you how they are doing it, but Penn & Teller are amazing guys.

#10 – Simply Ballroom
Take “Dancing with the Stars” and populate it with people who can actually, you know, dance and you have an idea of how electrifying Simply Ballroom is. These world-class and award winning dancers take you through everything from the waltz to the tango and do it with a panache that is both thrilling and intoxicating.

Top 10 Restaurants#1 – Hannah’s
Is the food here Asian with American influences or the other way around? It probably depends on which portion of the giant menu you’re looking at but forget classifications and just come to enjoy the spectacular cuisine offered by one of the most renowned restaurant families in the world. Amazing food, reasonable prices, terrific service, a beautiful atmosphere… it all adds up to make Hannah’s the best restaurant in Las Vegas.
#2 – Hash House-a-Go-Go
They have pancakes the size of large pizzas. What else do you need? Well, whatever else it is you’ll probably find it here at this deliriously offbeat eatery that takes Midwest farm food and puts a deliciously wild spin on it.

#3 – Austins Steakhouse
Steakhouses are a dime a dozen in this town but year after year, as I go to review more and more of them, I keep heading back to Austins when I’m not on the clock. Their filets and rib eyes are the stuff of legend at prices that won’t make you have to take out a loan to afford them. The best steakhouse in Vegas is still Austins.

#4 – Commander’s Palace
Many consider the Commander’s Palace in New Orleans to be the best restaurant in the world, so it’s no great surprise that the Las Vegas version is not as good. But that’s like saying the 10-bedroom mansion is not as good as the 12-bedroom mansion, when in fact both are an embarrassment of riches. Commander’s Vegas celebrates Cajun and Creole cooking with grace and puts most other high-end restaurants in this town to shame.

#5 – Pampas Brazilian Grille
This traditional Brazilian grill serves up meat on skewers, which sounds simple (and is) but in a memorable kind of way. The flavor, texture, smells, and visuals are mouth-watering delights, turning a meal into an adventure.

#6 – Triple George Grill
Take everything you think about restaurants in Downtown Las Vegas and throw it out the window, then come to eat here. If you can’t set aside your pre-conceived notions, eat here anyway and you’ll become a convert. Their classic American dishes are true treats from beginning to end and will make you wonder why you hadn’t been coming to Downtown to eat long ago.

#7 – Fellini’s
Italian cuisine is one of my personal favorites but I often wind up walking away disappointed at most Italian restaurants in Las Vegas. Not so at Fellini’s. Their old-world menu, atmosphere, and service is a delight and they will renew your faith in what can be created with traditional attention to detail.

#8 – Capriotti’s
If you come to Las Vegas and eat at a Subway or Quizno’s you should be ashamed of yourself, because right up the street is a purveyor of the best sandwiches in the world, period. Italian subs are the specialty and while you might pay a buck or two more, you’ll find it more than worth it. The only problem is you’ll probably never going to want to eat at Subway again.

#9 – Dan Marino’s
Okay, so they had to go put it in a Hooters hotel, but don’t let that stop you from checking out one of the most affordable, most enjoyable, and most satisfying restaurants on or near the Las Vegas Strip. From steaks to comfort food (bacon wrapped meatloaf!!), Dan Marino’s does it all just right at prices that will still leave a little left over for the slot machines.

#10 – Memphis Championship Barbecue
This year I took a tour of the American south and ate some authentic, down-home barbecue. A lot of it. So it’s saying a lot to tell you that if it came down to a cage match between those roadside joints in Mississippi and Memphis Championship Barbecue, I’d have a hard time picking a true winner. It’s just that good.

#11 – Desserts
I’m adding one more space to this list for a couple of places that aren’t actually restaurants but are the first places I think about when I get hungry in Las Vegas. The Chocolate Swan sells what I consider to be the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted and I’ve tasted A LOT of chocolate. And The Cupcakery takes cupcakes to a heavenly level with their delightful baked goods that will make you want to skip the meal and head straight for dessert.

Next week, the top ten buffets, nightlife choices and attractions.

Las Vegas is full of delights. However, something terrible happens after too much stimulation. We get jaded and spoiled. We demand to be entertained and need millions of dollars worth of lights, explosions, Grammys, plastic surgery and booze to reach that level of excitement again. It’s sad. Wally Eastwood makes it funny.

As the juggling, dancing cynical sensation in V—The Ultimate Variety Show at Desert Passage, Eastwood rejuvenates audience approval through brutal honesty and hysterical humor. Taking talent infused with sarcasm, he creates one of the most jocular and enjoyable skits around, standing out in a city inundated with top-shelf entertainment, like a Mexican with the name Wally would.

“Wow,” he exclaimed about Las Vegas while juggling belled top hats. “We have all these shows. People fly, stages turn into swimming pools and I have three hats. Oh, boy.” The audience roars with laughter.

“I get a kick out of the audience,” Eastwood said after the show. “There is Cirque and Starbucks everywhere in this town. I have fun with the fact that this job is a grind like any other. I take the truth and make it funny.”

His humor works because it’s backed by his skill. Touted as “the man with the fastest hands,” Eastwood does everything from tossing around machetes to playing the piano with his balls—juggling them, of course. It’s no wonder he was voted Variety Artist of the Year at an international artist show in Germany; Lance Burton had won the year prior.

“People always respond well,” the dexterous Eastwood said. “They think they’ve seen my kind of act before, then they realize I am down to earth, just like an audience member, and that’s when they relax and the laughter starts to flow.”

It helps that Eastwood’s colleagues keep the bar of energy raised high.

“Working with these acts, you always have to be on top of your game or you’ll get run over,” he said of his montage of book-ending performances, coming together to resemble what Cirque du Soleil would look like on speed. “Our show is talent-driven and is always consistent. A lot of people are not sure what to think, but they are always surprised at the level of theater and the energy they discover in here.”

As a linear show rises and falls around a climax, the many self-contained players each have their own pinnacle, and every one enjoys multiple climaxes. From magic to music, stunts to sexy showgirls, “V” appeals to every cross section of spectator.

Glued together by Jeff Hobson, aka the “Host of Las Vegas,” the concept of comedy magic comes into full funny focus. America’s Got Talent standout Nathan Burton also sprinkles on his wild and absurd magical antics, while the Russian duo of Iouri and Nikolai bend, muscle and amaze with their demonstration of what the human body is capable of. Turning the dial, Joe Trammel’s TV impersonations are a music video/acid trip that reminisces about everything from The Little Mermaid to Jaws.

“Everyone in here is amazing,” Eastwood said. “As far as this city goes, there is no better deal than what goes on inside this theater; you just can’t explain it.”

From “Eye On Vegas”Top 100 Nightclubs in America
An Eye on Vegas Breaking Exclusive

Oxford Publishing, the publisher of Nightclub & Bar Magazine, has announced the 2007 edition of the Editors Choice Top 100 Nightclub and Bars in the country and once again Las Vegas is proving to be the center of the country’s nightlife being home to 14 outlets on the list, by far the most of any other city on the list. Since the Editors of Nightclub & Bar Magazine list the clubs simply in alphabetical order we will follow suit, the Sin City clubs to land on the list include: Body English (Hard Rock Hotel), Cherry (Red Rock Casino, Resort, Spa), ghostbar (Palms Resort), JET Nightclub (The Mirage), Kahunaville (Treasure Island), Light Nightclub (Las Vegas), The Playboy Club (Palms Resort), PURE Nightclub (Caesars Palace),rumjungle (Mandalay Bay), Studio 54 (MGM Grand), Tabu Ultra Lounge (MGM Grand), Tangerine (Treasure Island), TAO Las Vegas (Venetian) and Tryst (Wynn Las Vegas). The Editors Choice list rates nightclubs and lounges all over the country on a variety of criteria, including popularity, originality, impact on the local and national scene, and creativity behind the outlet. “Truly, these venues represent the best in the industry and Las Vegas is definitely setting the standard with so many venues on the list,” Oxford Publishing CEO (and our favorite Southern Belle) Jennifer Robinson told the Eye on Vegas exclusively. “Each venue offers something extraordinary that was deserving of the honor of being named to the list, and for that reason they are one of the elite 100. The diversity among the group is extensive and there really are no two venues alike which is why this award has so much merit.”

It should be no surprise that Las Vegas enjoys such domination of the list that strives for geographical and concept variety. The more we travel, the more we understand that Las Vegas is completely different from everywhere else in the country, if not the planet. What Las Vegas nightclubs do is provide serious experiences through remarkable hospitality and service unmatched anywhere else. We are on the cutting-edge and leading the curve while sporting revenue sheets that are unmatched anywhere else. Quite simply, Las Vegas is the big leagues, and with the most nightclubs on the Top 100 list – by far – for the third year in a row, it would seem as though it’s official.

Congratulations to all 14 of the Vegas nightclubs who made this year’s Top 100 list. You are all doing something truly special, and by representing Las Vegas in such a manner you are helping make it undisputable that Las Vegas is the Nightlife Capital of America!

Ark Out Eye on Vegas Breaking NewsThe Eye has learned that ARK Restaurant Group has agreed to sell two of its remaining outlets within The VenetianLutece and Tsunami – back to the hotel and casino for $14 million. While the failed French restaurant Lutece has been closed for sometime now, it sits on great real estate; it’s hidden entrance being the only exception. On the other hand, longtime Japanese restaurant Tsunami was believed to be enjoying some financial success at its location in the Grand Canal Shoppes. It is now believed that Tsunami will be closed before the end of the year. This deal also includes the kitchen space attached to the now defunct Vivid Nightclub, formerly Venus Nightclub, as well as part of the former Vivid Space. ARK Restaurants local honcho Paul Gordon noted that the two sides had, “reached a mutually beneficial agreement that satisfies our interests,” before adding that, “Whenever two companies are able to agreeably reach an accord of this type, there is value for both parties.”This move doesn’t mean the end for ARK in Las Vegas; they already operate the majority of the casual-service outlets in the Venetian food court and New York, New York, as well as the America Café and Gallagher’s Steakhouse at the same property. Gordon did add that a new ARK venture was on its way and would be landing at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. “The restaurant will be designed by Jeffrey Beers and is set to open in the early spring,” Gordon shared before adding, “We will remain active in the Las Vegas market and have future plans to grow our company here.”

, the publisher of , has announced the 2007 edition of the in the country and once again Las Vegas is proving to be the center of the country’s nightlife being home to on the list, by far the most of any other city on the list. Since the Editors of Nightclub & Bar Magazine list the clubs simply in alphabetical order we will follow suit, the Sin City clubs to land on the list include: (Hard Rock Hotel), (Red Rock Casino, Resort, Spa), (Palms Resort), (The Mirage), (Treasure Island), (Las Vegas), (Palms Resort), (Caesars Palace (Mandalay Bay), (MGM Grand (MGM Grand), (Treasure Island), (Venetian) and (Wynn Las Vegas). The Editors Choice list rates nightclubs and lounges all over the country on a variety of criteria, including popularity, originality, impact on the local and national scene, and creativity behind the outlet. “Truly, these venues represent the best in the industry and Las Vegas is definitely setting the standard with so many venues on the list,” Oxford Publishing CEO (and our favorite Southern Belle) told the Eye on Vegas exclusively. “Each venue offers something extraordinary that was deserving of the honor of being named to the list, and for that reason they are one of the elite 100. The diversity among the group is extensive and there really are no two venues alike which is why this award has so much merit.”It should be no surprise that Las Vegas enjoys such domination of the list that strives for geographical and concept variety.

After only two months of operations in New York City’s Times Square, the Hawaiian Tropic Zone has announced that it will be opening a location in Las Vegas at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Harmon Avenue, inside the Miracle Mile Shops in the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. The campy concept will take over a 14,000 square foot, bi-level outlet, which we’re guessing will be the space that Crustacean off-shoot Prana once held. Don’t expect bare bar food from the new outlet, which has celebrity chef David Burke collaborating in the kitchen and creating the menu, all while he lays in wait for his upcoming Venetian eatery to be unveiled. The Hawaiian Tropic zone has a slew of interesting gimmicks that have worked wonders in the Big Apple tourist trap of Times Square, including: nightly beauty pageants on the long V-shaped bar; table concierges, “beautiful, friendly women who tend to the dining needs and enjoyment of patrons by facilitating introductions among groups”; a sidewalk café; bikinis and sarongs designed by colorful designer Nicole Miller; and several private party rooms. “Debuting our second Hawaiian Tropic Zone in the high-visibility, international hotspot of Las Vegas is a natural and, coupled with our Time Square NYC flagship, establishes us as a major player to watch in nightlife and dining,” said co-owner Dennis Riese.Plans Set for British Invasion

Inspired by The Beatles and created by Cirque du Soleil, The Beatles Revolution Lounge is nearly ready to open this December at The Mirage. Revolutionary in design and atmosphere, the ultra-lounge will feature cutting-edge interactive experiences to create a psychedelic sensory environment. The deal with The Mirage dictates the lounge shall be open seven days a week creating a bit of a challenge for the Revolution brass, but nothing that can’t handle. During the early hours of the lounge (5-10P), the musical tone will be set by the fantastic four themselves, with Beatles originals, remixes and covers mixed with 60’s & 70’s classic rock, soul and funk. At 10P each night the lounge will transform into an evolutionary journey with different themes and music formats throughout the week. On Monday nights the lounge will host Cirque Family Night featuring electro house, ethno and world music for the enjoyment of the large family of Cirque performers around Las Vegas, since Cirque and Cirque czar Guy Laliberte are so involved in the project, look for it to draw one of the most interesting audiences in town. On Wednesday night, Revolution will offer its Industry Night with hip-hop remixes and R&B mash-ups providing the musical flavor of the evening. Thursday nights will stand as British Invasion night with a focus on British pop and 80’s music while Tuesday’s and Sunday’s will offer an Open Lounge format featuring down-tempo house and acid jazz music. “This is what a lounge would have been like if The Beatles created a lounge instead of music,” said Bill Hillman, Operations Manager of the Revolution Lounge. Revolution is being operated by INK, the premier nightclub operator in Toronto, currently managing seven highly successful nightlife complexes in Eastern Canada including goliath nightclub Government in Toronto, Ontario. Already Hillman and his staff have started popping up at DJ sets and appearances around town looking for the best spinsters to take residence in the lounge that will feature supposedly feature some pretty amazing technology. And of course, you can’t forget about the re-branding, “The Beatles Revolution Lounge is the next dynamic step in the continuing transformation of The Mirage,” said Scott Sibella, president and COO of The Mirage, “Revolution will bring an even higher level of energy and excitement to the resort.” Agreed Scott, agreed. http://www.eyeonvegas.net/neweye.html

ANTI-SMOKING LAW: Challenge: Ban unfair, vague
Casinos vs. taverns one issue.
By Brian Haynes/Las Vegas Review Journal
When is a tavern more than a tavern and a lemon more than a cocktail garnish? As court onlookers learned Tuesday, things aren’t always what they seem when the discussion turns to the constitutionality of the state’s new anti-smoking law.

In an all-day hearing, lawyers for bar and tavern owners challenged the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act, saying it’s vague and unfairly targets small businesses.

“This was a misguided attempt to achieve a laudable goal,” said Mark Ferrario, who represents the more than 200 members of the Nevada Tavern Owners Association. “No one from our side of the table is challenging the goal of protecting children and families from secondhand smoke.”

MIKE WEATHERFORD: ‘Forever Plaid’ to end run, but group could pop up again.Forever Plaid” will call it a wrap at the Gold Coast on April 1 after a final eight weeks, but the fictional ’50s harmony group may return in a sequel.“We’ve had a good run,” says producer Richard Martini. “I want to go out while we’re still doing OK. There’s no reason to drag it through the mud.”

The off-Broadway musical logged more than 700 performances in the Gold Coast’s 400-seat showroom since early 2005, and before that had a six-year run at the Flamingo, from 1995 through 2001.

Writer-director Stuart Ross has a direct hand in supervising the Las Vegas edition (versus the countless community theater productions across the country). So you have to take him seriously about the concept, if not the title, of Las Vegas debuting a follow-up he says he would call “Plaid du Soleil.”

A certain French Canadian entertainment company might take issue with that. But Martini says all parties are serious about “a sequel or a prequel or some kind of ‘quel’ ” returning to the Gold Coast in 2008. Seldom have a venue and title been so perfectly matched, and Las Vegas “needs some more rooms for small shows — 500 seats or less,” Martini says.

NEW YEAR’S EVE: There’s still room to party in LV

Rooms available for end-of-year bashes, but prices are sky high.
By Benjamin Spillman/Las Vegas Review Journal
For locals the Stratosphere is a distinctive feature of the Las Vegas skyline. For tourists who want to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Sin City, it’s a G-rated description of where local hotel room rates are heading.

The supply of rooms available Dec. 31 is rapidly dwindling and likely to sell out.

And posted rates for the ones that remain are as high as $680 and as, um, low as $237.

Anyone who decides to leave the hotel for a swanky New Year’s Eve party on the Strip can expect to pay as much as $550 to get in.

Add it up and it comes to a little more than $198 million in nongambling revenue for the local economy, according to an estimate from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

SHOW REVIEWS: Sounds of the Season
‘Plaid,’ Scintas celebrate the holidays onstage.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

“We’re going to try to alter our show to fit you and your holiday needs,” proclaims a character in “Plaid Tidings,” the Christmas makeover of “Forever Plaid” at the Gold Coast.Well, this town is all about the service industry, right? Christmas shouldn’t be any exception. Wayne Newton added penguins and an ice skater to his Harrah’s revue, and the Scintas join in this year with a holiday edition that, Joe Scinta jokes, cost a whopping “314 bucks.”

It’s money well spent. Christmas so becomes the family band from Buffalo, N.Y., that the Scintas could leave the tree onstage all year. The jokes just seem funnier, the George Burns and Dean Martin imitations more dead on, when filtered through that warm fuzziness of ’70s variety TV.

Rudner brings in big laughs at Harrah’s
By Len Butcher/Las Vegas Review Journal
Funny, right? Well, there’s plenty more where this came from when you catch her show at Harrah’s. This popular comedian became one of Las Vegas’ most beloved performers during her six-year run at New York-New York before moving into a larger theater at Harrah’s a few months ago.

This multi-talented performer began her career as a dancer, good enough to dance on Broadway in five different productions. She gave it up to do stand-up comedy, but admits that she had no idea why. She recently told me that she discovered she had “some kind of absurdly intense interest in it that I never knew I had. I loved it and still do. It’s a constant challenge and something you can do until you’re much older. Dancers peak at 35 and that’s pretty much it. I noticed George Burns was 95 and he was still okay. You can do stand up for a long time.”

Rudner has also said that she refuses to say anything unless it is laced with wit. “Making people laugh gives you a lot of self confidence. I used to be painfully shy. When I was a kid, I would hide, but now I just say ‘hey.’ So I think anything is possible if you work at it. But it certainly did not come naturally, this was a conscious effort. Everything is a conscious effort.

“Even if I’ve had a day that’s particularly dramatic in some fashion and people say, ‘How can you do stand-up comedy when you’ve had a day like that?’ Well, that’s the very time to do it because, not only am I making an audience feel happier, when I see other people laugh, it’s contagious and you kind of say, ‘Oh, that wasn’t so bad, the plumber will come tomorrow, things will dry’.”

When she faced an audience for the first time as a comedian, Rudner says, “It was a tremendous sense of fulfillment. When I first came out on Letterman and came out by myself and said what I had thought and what I had written the way I wanted to do it, it was very liberating. Stand-up is very independent, which is why I think people who don’t even have to do stand-up anymore — those who are very wealthy and successful like Jerry Seinfeld and Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby — still choose to do it. They don’t have to, they just like it. You get to say what you want to say. It’s a very personal form of expression.”

She credits Las Vegas as giving her a big break. “Vegas was a huge break because my husband and I were able to move here, start a family and change our lives. I was able to stop traveling and work in the same place every night. I think coming to Vegas was a big break and getting my own theater.”

Despite her hectic schedule, Rudner turned her talents to writing, and like her stand-up comedy, her books proved as successful. She says her writing is “kind of an expansion of my jokes, comedy essays. It’s fun, I like doing it. I’m doing another book now of essays but my first novel was quite challenging. It was called Tickled Pink which was about becoming a stand-up comedian in Manhattan in the ’80s. My new novel that’s just out is called Turning The Tables and is about a woman who gets wronged by a guy in a casino in Las Vegas. That was a bit more difficult because it involved a story line, character development and plot.”

But if you think Rudner is going to limit herself just to comedy and books, fuggedaboutit. Her and husband Martin Bergman, who collaborate on projects, have a new movie “that we’re trying to figure out how to get going, which is always a challenge and he also helps me with my books. The new book I’m writing is about being in your 50s — and I don’t say I’m 50, I say ‘I’ve turned filthy.’ We’re always getting involved in something. I think you have to do a lot of different things, so if one thing falls over, you say, ‘Oh well, I’ll do this one.”

Whatever Rudner does, you know it’s going to be good and you’re going to enjoy it. If you don’t believe me, catch her at Harrah’s.
