STRIP MAINSTAY: A Silver ‘JUBILEE!’
Long-running Bally’s show celebrates 25 years.
By Sonta Padgett/Las Vegas Review Journal
When “Jubilee!” opened in 1981, it stood out among Strip shows for using cutting-edge technology to stage what could have been just another local production featuring showgirls. Now, 25 years later, “Jubilee!” still stands out, insists company manager Fluff LeCoque, for the simple fact that it does feature showgirls.

In recent years, Las Vegas has gone through an entertainment transformation that has led to the dying out of a Las Vegas icon: the statuesque, feathered and sequined showgirl who, at one time, could be found on nearly every Strip stage.

Steve’s Las Vegas QuickiesDuring an interview this week, David Hasselhoff let slip that he has more than a role in “The Producers.” He has a percentage. “I’m not at liberty to talk about this, because I haven’t discussed whether I should be talking about it,” he told “The Strip” podcasters Steve Friess and Miles Smith (www.thestrippodcast. com). But, he added, “I don’t do anything unless I own a piece of it.” Mel Brooks is bringing the show to the Paris Las Vegas next month, with Hasselhoff, the former “Baywatch” hunk, playing flamboyant director Roger DeBris. “The Producers” opens Jan. 31, with media and VIP openings Feb 8-9.

Wackiness continues to permeate Imperial Palace. On Tuesday hotel officials arranged for a photo-op with an entity known as Zorro the Steer at the Legends Theater as part of a National Finals Rodeo promotion. The beast was taken up the freight elevator to the backstage entrance of the theater, led to the showroom stage, through the ballroom (upsetting the employee blood drive), and out through the ballroom back door. Zorro narrowly steered clear of the Emperor’s Buffet.

NORM: Sahara co-owner Lynn Bennett diesLynn Bennett, co-owner of the Sahara and a long-coveted 55 acres of Strip real estate, died Sunday, putting on hold a potential deal involving British entrepreneur Richard Branson.Ron Garrett, director of marketing for the Sahara, confirmed that Bennett, the widow of casino developer Bill Bennett, had passed away. Cause of death was not immediately known, he said.

Bill Bennett, who died in 2002 at age 78, bought the Sahara in 1995 after helping create Circus Circus, Excalibur and Luxor.

His death left his wife and William Gordon in charge of Gordon Gaming Corp., which owns the Sahara and a package of land that includes the prized 26 acres of long-vacant land across from the Sahara.

Reached Sunday, Las Vegas deal-maker Jack Wishna confirmed that he has been working on an acquisition deal involving the Sahara, Virgin honcho Branson and Disney designer Don Dorsey.

There have been meetings, Wishna said, “but no formal deal is in place for a Branson-Dorsey deal.”

Wishna put together Wayne Newton’s megadeal with the Stardust seven years ago and the Donald Trump-Phil Ruffin real estate deal that brought Trump to Las Vegas.

You’ll be seeing a lot less of Jeff Beacher, zany show creator and promoter extraordinaire, if he has his weigh.

The 370-pound Beacher plans to launch a bid to lose 100 pounds in a year when he enters the Las Vegas Marathon next Sunday.

He plans to walk as far as he can this year, his first steps in going from “Hollywood slob” to “Hollywood heartthrob.” Beacher plans to be in good enough shape to run the 26.2 miles next year.

He’s taking the challenge in conjunction with the Hard Rock Hotel, site of his Beacher’s Madhouse for nearly three years, and the Las Vegas Marathon.

“It’s time to change,” said Beacher, who said he has gained 100 pounds since moving here from New York three years ago. “If I don’t, I will die and lose everything.”

Beacher means business. He’s vowing to stay celibate for the year and will give away $200,000 if he gives in to temptation — $100,000 to the temptress and $100,000 to a charity.

Mamma Mia!Reviewed November 2006
by Nancy Dickinson
From www.accessvegas.com

Sophie, an average twenty-year old bride to be, sits under the moon and sings of her dream. Next to the crystal blue Mediterranean, her wedding day anxieties, life’s ideals, along with her desire to discover who her real father is are belted across the showroom in powerful song. When her two friends stumble into the scene, drunk with pre-marital madness, it becomes obvious- this show is no circus act; here’s a story to which everyone can relate.

Mandalay Bay is the proud home of the longest running and most successful full-scale Broadway musical ever to play on the Las Vegas Strip…Mamma Mia! With a total of 11 global productions, the show has managed to attract over 27 million people worldwide. And with good reason- the content of the show holds something special. It’s adventures into real-world family issues and life’s less than perfect idiosyncrasies, for audience members just, well, hits home.

No wedding mayhem is complete without some off the wall aunties. Donna, the mother of the bride and hard-working-who-needs-a-man sole owner of a resort in Greece, is reunited with her two best friends. Although complete opposites (one a high rolling jetsetter and the other probably only jetsetting the grocery store), both waste no time making light of Donna’s wayward past with men resulting in Sophie’s mystery father. While these may normally be solemn circumstances during a wedding, all it takes for these seasoned party animals to lighten the mood are some old camaraderie singing routines- one in particular, singing into a blow dryer and snorkle mask Abba’s renowned “Dancing Queen.”

Ah yes, Abba! The very backbone of Mamma Mia for both the music and story line. Abba’s feel-good, timeless pop songs perfectly compliment the relationship trials of two generations of women and all the chaos real life likes to toss around. Abba songs, music and lyrics by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus make the trip through life a little easier, and a lot more fun.

And this is exactly how these very multi-dimensional, very realistic characters carry on; taking everyday issues and illuminating them with beautiful, energetic song and outrageous, fun filled dance. Yes, everyone has confusion, pain, and skeletons in the closet, but Mamma Mia knows that’s no reason to hold up the party. This show clearly states that the search for identity and a picture perfect life must never over shadow what is truly important: the joy of the moment. Ideals aren’t so far away after all.

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer
From accessvegas.com
Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.

Three Card PokerPoker made simple. How easy can it get? Well, how about taking five card stud, and seven card stud, and all the hold’em games and reducing the “worry” of what to make out of these cards to just three cards total. Actually, it’s quite brilliant. Of course a few rule alterations need to be made.

For example, a “straight” is now higher than a “flush”. And, there’s NO royal flush … just the “straight flush” for the top award. The rest of the card hierarchy remains (somewhat) the same: pair, then the flush, then the straight, then the three-of-a-kind and then the straight flush. Of course, there can’t be two-pair with just three cards, or a full-house or a four-of-a-kind, but then in this game they don’t have to be there.

The attraction of this game lies in its simplicity, and the “bonus” odds-awards when the higher-paying combinations of cards are hit. Plus, Three Card Poker also trades on the “familiarity” aspects of some other games, which have, by now, become mainstream casino table games. The three existing games which all have some “familiar” presence in Three Card Poker are: Stud Poker, Let It Ride and Caribbean Stud. The brilliance of Three Card Poker lies in how all these three familiar elements have been combined and treated in the game’s rules and layout.

The layout of the table is very similar to both Caribbean Stud and Let It Ride. Even the table design, with its three spots is very like Let It Ride, and the fact that one of the bets is called “ante” and the other called “bet” is also virtually identical to Caribbean Stud. And, of course, Stud Poker rules are used (somewhat) to judge the value of the hands dealt. So, in one sweep of inspiration, the game’s innovator has virtually eliminated the learning curve for players.

Anyone who has ever had any familiarity with Stud Poker, be it at the poker table or at video poker, knows what the hands do and what they mean. Anyone who has ever played Let It Ride will be able to quickly grasp the layout and betting positions, which is also the case for anyone who has ever played Caribbean Stud. So, here we have a game which just about anyone who has ever been to a modern casino can play almost immediately, and without much “thinking” and “learning”.

And, to that effect, Three Card Poker has achieved the desired outcome of making this table game as closely akin to a slot machine as it possibly can be, and yet still retain the table game allure for both the players, and the casino.

Actually, Three Card Poker is a very good game, odds-wise. And, as it turns out, it is so for both the player and the casino. The casino can expect about an average of between a little over 2% to a little under 3% edge, while the players can look forward to hitting the top-paying straight flush combination about each 450 hands. All things considered, as far as table games go, this one is among the better-odds games available. Most $1 and $5 and higher slot machines are set to “hold” about 2% to 4% for the house, and therefore Three Card Poker is very much in line with these house odds.

In addition, the ease of playing the game, and the opportunities to make three bets and vary the betting amounts, also provides the player with additional winning opportunities which can’t be found among most slot machines, but still do so within an inherent simplicity which is quite startling for a table game.

After the players make their bets, the game begins by the dealer dealing three cards to each player, and three cards to himself/herself. There are three bets in Three Card Poker. The first is called “Pair Plus”. This is designated on the table layout (closest to the dealer) by a small circle above the “ante” box. This is a single-shot bet, and plays strictly against the pay table. If among your three cards you have at least a pair, you win.

Pairs pay even money, three-card flushes pay 4:1, three-card straights pay 6:1, three-of-a-kind pays 30:1, and a three-card straight flush pays 40:1. These are purely one-shot (or one roll) bets, and the dealer does not figure in this decision. This is kind of like LIR, and the advantage to the player is that these payoffs pay with substantial odds, and are hit more frequently than at other similar games.

The other two bets are the “ante” wager and the “bet” wager. Similarly to Caribbean Stud, here the player wagers on the strength and value of his/her three-card hand against the dealer’s three-card hand. The dealer qualifies with a Queen or better. If the player’s hand beats the dealer, the player wins. If not, the player loses. However, unlike in Caribbean Stud, in Three Card Poker if the player has a hand of straight-or-better, then the player wins the odds-award, regardless of whether the dealer has qualified or not.

This is a distinct advantage. Any straight will pay 3:1, a three-of-a-kind pays 4:1 and the straight flush pays 5:1. And all this in addition to the awards paid on these hands for the Pair Plus wager (if that wager was made by the player).

To sum up, here’s how it all works. When you sit down at the Three Card Poker table, and change your cash into gaming chips, you then have the choice of making two of the three bets available: The Pair Plus and the “ante”. You MUST make the “ante” bet if you want to play for the round against the dealer, but you don’t have to. You can simply play Pair Plus alone, if you wish. Likewise, you can only play the “ante” at the beginning, and then decide later if you also want to play the “bet” round, based on the strength of the cards you received.

Let us assume that you are a smart player, and will therefore wager both the Pair Plus and the “ante” bets prior to receiving your cards. Now you have two bets in action, and they do NOT have to be the same value bet! This is another advantage, because you can bet, say $25 on the Pair Plus, and only $5 (for example) on the “ante”.

Now your bets are made, and you get your three cards, and the dealer get his/her cards. Look at what you have. If your hand contains a pair-or-better, you have automatically won your Pair Plus hand (remember that on the Pair Plus bet you also are paid for anything better than a pair, such as the flushes, straights and straight flushes). The Pair Plus hands are decided first, before the remainder of the game takes place. If your hand won on the Pair Plus wager, you will be paid in accordance with the pay table. Now the rest of the game takes place.

If you think your hand will beat the dealer’s hand, you then wake the third wager in the “bet” box, and this has to be twice your “ante” bet (just like in Caribbean Stud). Then the dealer looks at his/her hand. If the dealer qualifies with Queen or better, the decisions of whether you win or lose will depend on the value of the dealer’s hand versus the value of your hand. If the dealer does not qualify, then you will be paid even money on your “ante” bet. However, IF your hand also contains a flush or better, then your “bet” wager will also be paid with odds, regardless of whether the dealer qualified or not.

And that’s Three Card Poker in a nutshell. I think it’s a very good game for the players. My recommendation is to always make the “bet” wager backing up your “ante” bet. Most of the time you are far better off doing this than not, and surrendering your “ante”. In Three Card Poker, your hands will win more than they do at Caribbean Stud, and the fact of the odds payoffs on hands of flush or better regardless of dealer qualifying, makes this a very desirable bet.

The Pair Plus is also good, however you should be aware that getting pairs of anything, or better, in Three Card Poker is just about as tough as in five-card based games, in fact tougher. Therefore, the Pair Plus may not always be a good bet. Nevertheless, the combination of all these three wagers allows you to “hedge” your total table wagers per round, by cumulative means. And this alone, if anything, is one of the best advantages of this game. For more information about this game, please read my book: Powerful Profits from Casino Table Games, available through this web site.

SHOW REVIEW: Prince

Nothing Compares 2 Prince: Singer throws out most of the Vegas rules during his new free-form show at the Rio.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Prince has thrown out the Vegas playbook, and isn’t it about time?Think about what most Las Vegas entertainment is, versus what it could be. Las Vegas is an all-night town, but ticketed shows start at 7:30 p.m. and last about 90 minutes. Big stars such as Elton John take the money and play by dated rules, serving up the same short and tidy sets night after night.

So it seems like something out of a Vegas movie when your pricey ticket at least buys you nearly three late-night hours within sweating distance of a legend — particularly one who still has so much to offer.

The Auto Collections Celebrates 25th Anniversary
IP Will Issue Casino Chips to Commemorate Classic Car Showroom.
When The Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino opened its doors as a museum in 1981, it began with 85 vehicles on display. Since then, about 3,000 cars with a total value today of nearly $1 billion have passed through its doors as it celebrates its silver anniversary.

To memorialize this noteworthy milestone, limited edition 25th anniversary commemorative casino chips in three distinct $5 designs will be issued soon.

In 2000, The Auto Collections began selling showroom cars and now averages about one sale every day. Most of the sales are from private collectors who negotiate over the telephone based on their confidence in the integrity and professionalism of owners Richie Clyne and Don Williams and general manager Rob Williams. Tens of thousands of visitors tour the showroom every month but only rarely do walk-ins walk out with a car. The most notable was six years ago when, one day after having lady luck on his side, a blackjack player plunked down $50,000 and drove out with a 1930 Cadillac V-16 coupe.

Making a Lasting Impression
By Len Butcher
Las Vegas hotels continue to add entertainers, as well as production shows, to their ongoing lineups, and this means good news for you. One of the best has recently made a move from one property to another and is filling the seats.Any guy who can go from pen and ink impressions to impersonating real people has to possess one hell of a fertile mind, and that’s the multi-talented Gordie Brown. Now performing at the Venetian six nights a week, after moving uptown from his long-running gig at the Golden Nugget, Brown is where he belongs. I caught up with him in his dressing room for a chat the night before he flew to New York to tape the David Letterman Show for “Impressionist Week.” Brown’s performance drew a rousing standing ovation and praise from Letterman, who said, “That was just unbelievable.”

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Brown began putting his creativity to work as a political cartoonist for the Ottawa Sunday Herald. After co-workers entered him in an industry talent competition in which he took first prize, he caught the entertainment bug. Inspired by show business idols and fellow Canadians Paul Anka and Rich Little, Brown tells me, “They were the light bulbs that went off in my head.”

Sometime after the “Aha moment,” Brown pulled together $3,000, jumped in his car and headed for the neon lights of Vegas. His goal was to break into the big time and work with the two Canadian icons. It soon came to fruition. In less than two years, Brown was opening for both Anka and Little before moving on to work with Jay Leno, Louie Anderson, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Barry Manilow, The Righteous Brothers and Jerry Seinfeld.

Brown considers himself first and foremost a comedian and writes all of his own material. He also includes a lot of singing in his show, but says when he was young, he never did have a good singing voice (though I’m sure audiences would challenge that statement). Brown laughs, “In fact, when I did sing, people would tell me to shut up. But that spurred me on. It’s like when someone tells you that you can’t do something, you want to prove them wrong. I’ve been very fortunate in the fact that I didn’t listen to people.” So much so, that as far as singing, he has been writing songs that he will release (as himself) on two CDs in the coming year.

His real strength, he says, is being able to observe and create dialogue for those observations that he then weaves into his show. Brown takes on approximately 60 personalities per show, covering a wide variety of entertainers, including Jim Carrey, Robert DeNiro, Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Christopher Walken and a very funny Ozzie Osbourne. He also does a great President Bush.

Musical parodies of songs made famous by Louis Armstrong, Garth Brooks, James Brown, Johnny Cash and Tracy Chapman are also part of the show, as he goes from one character to another with ease. Not only do you get the sound of the performers, but the very convincing physical resemblances as well. In a town where the competition is hot, Brown rates a 10 on a scale of one to 10. Dollar for dollar, one of, if not the best, show in town. Check him out. You’ll thank me.

Never ceasing to Amaze
Behind the scenes with the Amazing Johnathan
By Len Butcher/Lenny’s Las Vegas

Every so often I like to sit down with one of our entertainers just to give you an insight into what they’re really like. A few weeks ago I had the chance to join the Amazing Johnathan in his dressing room after his show at the Sahara. A very funny show, by the way, considering this guy, by his own admission, sucked at magic.
“Yeah,” he says, laughing. “My magic was lousy.” He tells about the last time he ever performed serious magic. It was during his senior year in high school. “All of my friends, relatives and family were there. I did six tricks and all six went wrong. It was like God was watching my show and having a blast with it, as though He had rigged everything up against me.

“For my grand entrance, I came on stage wearing a cape and looking like a white-faced mime. I threw my arms out in a gesture and a big explosion was supposed to happen as I did that, but nothing happened. I tried throwing my arms out again and still nothing happened. I did it a third time and still nothing… So there’s the audience, watching this idiot throwing his arms out in the air over and over again and I’m sure they’re thinking, ‘what is this? Is he saying hello?’”

His second trick with a girl in a box was even worse. “I started putting the swords through the box and she said, ‘I have to get out, I have a leg cramp.’ I pleaded, ‘No, stay in the box, we’re almost finished.’ But her legs were cramping and she had to get out. When she stood, the box fell apart, a mirror broke and there she was, just rubbing her legs.”

Hard to believe, he said, but it went downhill from there. “I stepped on a dove and killed it. I tried to do a guillotine trick with a girl and in the middle of it, the lights went out, the stage went dark and the girl got hurt. That very night I swore I’d never do serious magic again and I never have.

This disaster made him flee his hometown of Detroit and head for San Francisco, where Johnathan had heard there were a lot of street performers. That was where he met Harry Anderson (the judge on the TV series Night Court). “He took me under his wing, helped me with my act and taught me how to make money with it. It was Harry who told me to add comedy to my act. Harry was great and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s what I want to do’.”

The gory part of his act that became a signature trademark for Johnathan in the early days came about, he said, “when I was eating razor blades’Äîa trick Houdini used to do. A guy came up to me, handed me a blood capsule and suggested I try it to see how the audience reacted. So I was eating razor blades and blood was gushing out of my mouth. The crowd went nuts and doubled in size just from seeing that. It’s like watching a car accident. Crowds of people gather just trying to see some blood and gore. I put more and more blood in my act, more violence and more shocking stuff.

“I think it all worked well because there’s only half a dozen people that have the correct blend of comedy and magic. My sense of humor is a little bit off and there are a lot of people with that same sense of humor, so I’ve found a niche for people who really like that crazy, dark side of magic and comedy.”

It is a life he has enjoyed and the only job he’s ever had. “I’ve never held any other sort of job. My father started out as a cartoonist but then got locked into a job he hated all his life. So he always told me, ‘go out there and be a magician or be whatever you want, but don’t get locked into a job.’ It was a good choice.”

Johnathan has also become quite a collector of cars, and he shared the reason why he started this hobby. “My first was a ‘57 Porsche Speedster. I’d bought it for my wife the day she left me. We came back from a trip and I’d had it wrapped in a bow and ribbons, waiting for her in the driveway. I said, ‘See what I got you for Valentine’s Day?’ She said, ‘I’m leaving you. I’m going back to Australia and I want a divorce.’ She left that day. But I kept the car, so it was a good trade-off.

“That’s what started me on cars. I’d drive that car around and when I wasn’t thinking about driving off a cliff’Äîwhich is what I had on my mind most of the time’Äîpeople would stop me and ask about the car, so I thought that was cool. I now have a total of 21 cars and I have them stored in a warehouse. I don’t buy and sell them, although they’ve turned out to be good investments and I could do that. But I just buy them and I drive a different one almost every day.”

Johnathan recently did another special for Comedy Central. “When the network discovered that I was one of the top five comedians to be downloaded (iTunes), they asked me to do another special. It’s called Wrong on Every Level. We just finished taping it at Manhattan’s Hudson Theater (now part of the Millennium Broadway Hotel). We worked our asses off for about two months creating new material for the network special. The show you see today at the Sahara is mostly the material we created for the upcoming Comedy Central Special.”

Check your listings folks, to see when it’s coming. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it. He’s a hard-working, talented guy who has managed to survive and stay on top in one of the toughest businesses in the world. And make sure you catch his show at the Sahara.

50th Anniversary of Famous Liberace-Elvis Photo.
Tribute Artists Re-Create Photo to Celebrate Entertainers.
It was 50 years ago Tuesday when a popular piano player and a young up-and-coming rock ‘n’ roller posed for a publicity photo in Las Vegas. Who could have predicted then that both performers not only would become worldwide legends but would continue to attract thousands of devoted fans decades after their respective deaths.

On Nov. 14, 1956, Liberace and Elvis Presley posed for a publicity photo taken by the Las Vegas News Bureau in which they switched jackets and instruments. To commemorate the golden anniversary of this picture seen around the world, tribute artists Wes Winters as Liberace and Matt Lewis as Elvis re-created the famous photo at the Liberace Museum.

When Wladziu (Walter) Valentino “Lee” Liberace opened the Riviera in April 1955, he was the city’s highest paid entertainer, earning $50,000 per week. It was also the first time he wore a gold lame jacket, the first of hundreds of extravagant costumes that became his signature trademark. The following April, Elvis performed in Las Vegas for the first time when he was 21. He received a lukewarm reception from an audience of adult gamblers, despite being on his way to becoming an international singing sensation and silver screen heartthrob.

The story goes that seven months later, Elvis went to see Liberace’s show and afterward was introduced backstage to Mr. Showmanship by Liberace’s agent. As the agent and photographer waited onstage by the piano, Liberace told Elvis he needed more glitz in his wardrobe if he wanted to make it in Vegas and suggested they ham it up by switching jackets and instruments. Both emerged onstage, Elvis sat at the piano, Liberace strummed The King’s guitar – and the News Bureau snapped the picture that would forever have its place in the entertainment history of Las Vegas.

To re-create the famous photo for Nevada Magazine, the Las Vegas News Bureau began with the Liberace Foundation and Museum where one of Liberace’s favorite pianos is on display. The seven-foot Baldwin is covered in about 150,000 two and one-half carat Swarovski rhinestones, made in 1976 to match Liberace’s rhinestone costume and car. Liberace last performed on this piano in 1986 in the finale of his appearance at Radio City Music Hall.

To sit in for Liberace, who better than tribute artist Wes Winters, who won the Liberace Museum’s 2003 “Liberace Play-a-Like Competition” and since has performed “A Musical Tribute to Liberace – the Showmanship Years” Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1 p.m. at the museum.  Wearing costumes and jewelry that would make Liberace smile, Winters keeps his spirit alive through song and fantastic tickling of the ivories – even though Winters plays piano by ear and performs his tribute based on watching televised Liberace performances.

Completing the photo re-creation is Matt Lewis as Elvis. Lewis is the featured performer of “Legends in Concert®,” the full-production celebrity tribute spectacular in its 24th year at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. Lewis first impersonated Elvis for a school talent show when he was 12 years old. Now, six nights every week, two shows per night, Lewis leaves the ladies swooning in the aisles with his boyish good looks, commanding voice and dead-ringer compelling impersonation of the truck driver from Tupelo who would become the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Although their careers traveled different musical paths, according to the Liberace Museum, Liberace and Elvis Presley remained friends over the years. The museum still has several stuffed and ceramic hound dogs that were gifts from Elvis to Liberace. 2006 also marks the 30th anniversary of the Liberace Foundation for the Performing and Creative Arts, created by Liberace out of gratitude for the scholarship he received to go to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. His foundation has distributed nearly $5 million in scholarships to more than 2,200 students at 110 colleges, universities and art organizations.
