NORM: Cher, Bette ready for Vegas run.

All the pieces of the post-Celine Dion era at Caesars Palace are falling into place: Cher’s deal is done, and Bette is set.

Cher will move into the 4,000-seat Colosseum in the spring of 2008, and Bette Midler will follow in the fall, I hear.

Dion ends her 41/2-year run, an unequaled local success, in December 2007. Depending on which reports you believe, she either plans to launch a two-year world tour or will try to have a second child through in vitro fertilization.

It was announced Wednesday that she has canceled her next five performances of “A New Day” and an appearance as a presenter Monday at the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand.

She is being treated for mycoplasma bronchitis, a contagious respiratory bacterial infection.

She returns Dec. 28, after a holiday break.

Steve’s Las Vegas Quickies

Steve’s Las Vegas QuickiesMandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is offering a discounted package that includes dinner in the resort’s Bay Side Buffet and admission to the Shark Reef. It’s $39.99 for those 13 and older, $27.99 for those 5-12 and free for children 4 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the buffet or Shark Reef.

The new lobby at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood opened Wednesday. Similar to the design strategy illuminated by Red Rock Resort, eight chandeliers (each with 66,000 Swarovski crystals that were individually hand-strung with 104 light bulbs per chandelier) are the focal point of the 12,800-square-foot expanse. The lobby is the first phase of the hotel renovation; next is the casino floor, expected to be finished before the end of the year.

Kid Rock, whose August marriage to Pamela Anderson is already on the rocks, will do a DJ set and countdown on New Year’s Eve at Jet Nightclub (Mirage).

Wynn Las Vegas seems to be a pretty lucky place these days. In the space of just over a month, the resort had two Megabucks winners. Just a few hours after arriving in Vegas, an anonymous man from Toronto, Canada scored a whopping $10,828,990 Megabucks jackpot. He’d already hit several small jackpots (totaling $2,200) when he spotted someone leaving their seat at a Megabucks machine and stepped up to take a shot. “I began playing and was down to my last $3 when it hit,” he said. “I knew I won as soon as I saw the game reset.” Just a month before that, another lucky player hit for $12,317,717. All I can tell you is that neither of these guys was me. You’ll know when I win when you click on to my column and there’s a blank screen.

More sounds of music: The Beatles’ “Love” CD has debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Album Charts. As one reviewer noted, the CD makes you want to see the show, and gosh, it’s good to see Apple Corps, Mirage and Cirque du Soleil enjoy some success occasionally.

Ambitious illusionist Steve Wyrick has passed word to us (or, to me) that the date for the opening of his theater complex at the Desert Passage mall will be Dec. 16. It will be a “soft” opening, with Wyrick’s own show opening the 500-seat theater complex (which reportedly cost $34 million to construct). Joining Wyrick in the rotation of headliners will be ventriloquist Ronn Lucas, vocalist Martin Nievera and the comedy show “Defending the Caveman.”

Combining the nostalgia of yesteryear with the wonders of modern technology, Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens creates a multitude of picture-perfect moments this holiday season.  A colorful cranberry bog comprised of more than 100,000 individual Ocean Spray cranberries, calls to mind the vision of a plentiful holiday table.  A fanciful tableau captures six reindeer in mid-flight as they leap from ice-covered tundra into a snow-filled sky.  Each of the six majestic reindeer is made of 110 pounds of whole pecans and wears brilliant yokes of cranberry-red dried botanicals.  A short distance away, a trio of polar bears can be seen enjoying a moment of family togetherness. The dazzling centerpiece of this beautiful exhibit is a towering 35-foot Shasta Fir tree ablaze in an intricate, state-of-the-art LED display.  Featuring brilliant holiday lighting, sparkling chrome accents and delicate crystal jewels, this impressive holiday tree is surrounded by oversized 14-point mirrored stars which twinkle and spin.  At the tree’s base, dancing fountains leap to choreographed music amongst a sea of vibrant red poinsettias. Visitors are invited to enjoy the delights of this winter wonderland from December 3 through January 6.

In celebration of the silver jubilee of its Classic Car Showroom, the Imperial Palace will be issuing limited edition 25th anniversary commemorative chips in three distinct $5 designs. The chips are not yet available, but will be soon.

Singer Celine Dion has canceled her next five performances at Caesars Palace, plus her appearance at the Billboard Music Awards next week, due to a highly contagious respiratory infection. Ticket-holders will receive refunds or can choose to book other dates for A New Day, which was already scheduled for an extended dark period and will not resume until December 28.

According to today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal and other sources we’ve seen, Britney Spears is set to ring in the New Year at Pure, the club at Caesars Palace. Apparently, her only performance will be to provide the midnight countdown, although who knows what might happen on the night… Tickets are priced at $200 (about average for a Vegas club on New Year’s), while Ms Spears’ fee is a reputed $300,000.

NORM: Elvis show shuns look-alike routine.

Cirque du Soleil’s upcoming Elvis spectacular won’t have an Elvis impersonator in the building.

“That’s certainly not where we’re going to go,” according to Gilles Ste. Croix, creative vice president of the Montreal-based entertainment giant.

The permanent production, a collaboration of Cirque and Elvis Presley Enterprises, opens in 2009 at the mammoth 66-acre CityCenter being built by MGM Mirage.

Cirque approached The Beatles‘ show “Love,” which opened in June at The Mirage, in the same way: no look-alikes, no impersonators.

“When people think of The Beatles, they think of the (Fab Four) and the copies that exist around the world, the tours, and that’s what people expected,” Ste. Croix told Flo Rogers, KNPR’s assistant general manager, during an interview that aired Thursday.

Instead of Beatles impersonators, the closest thing to the Fab Four in “Love” is a shadow projection scene.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Hotels move away from country acts during rodeo

Everyone knows those boys in Styx would rather be a blue-collar man. But a few years ago, nobody would have figured them for a National Finals Rodeo week attraction.

But the classic rock band plays Luxor on Friday and Saturday, taking up two nights in a theater that almost surely would have gone to a country act in the past.

It’s part of a slow change that finds many casinos mixing country with other genres or sitting out this year’s rodeo altogether. What had become almost a parallel country festival in the early ’90s has filtered down to acts with a direct appeal to rodeo fans.

Blue Man Group’s dispute with unions spills onto Venetian sidewalk.

By Brendan Buhler/Las Vegas Sun

With his face painted half-blue and half-red and his mouth open to shout, Dar Lawerence might have looked like an enraged Arizona Wildcats fan, but you rarely see one of those standing outside the Venetian, not with about 150 friends waving picket signs.

Lawerence was there with the stagehands union, IATSE Local 720, which claims it represents the crew for the Blue Man show and which the show claims does not. Hence the paint job: Lawerence says, “Blue Man should be red-faced with shame.”

At stake are a health plan and a pension plan (both of which are more generous with the union), and the show’s control over its employees.

The dispute between the union and the show officially has been boiling all through summer and fall, but it’s been simmering since the show left the Luxor for the Venetian in fall 2005. At the Luxor, the crew was unionized; at the Venetian, it is not.

Casinos Keep Changing By Rick Garman

Several Las Vegas casinos have undergone remodeling, renovation, and expansion recently but since none of them are located on The Strip, they tend to fly under the radar a little bit. I recently went on a self-guided tour of several of these casinos and here’s the report:

Golden Nugget
The Grande Dame of Downtown has new owners. I know, I know, you’ve heard that before about the Golden Nugget and have heard the promises that they have made about sprucing the old gal up. These new owners have put their money where their mouths are and the results are truly spectacular.

The changes are subtle in some places, dramatic in others. The casino has been completely redone with new ceilings, carpeting, wall treatments, lighting, gaming tables, and slot machines. It’s a huge departure from the old look and feel and brings it more in line with Strip style amenities, complete with wooden casings on the slots just like at Bellagio or Wynn Las Vegas.

There are several new restaurants from corporate owner Landry’s plus some new bars and lounges and an all new buffet (reviewed in this week’s column as well).

The lobby has gotten a sprucing up as have most of the public areas and the spa has gotten a complete makeover. Rooms are being renovated as well although that project is ongoing.

Most dramatic is the new pool area. What used to be a fairly pedestrian splash around is now a lush outdoor wonderland, complete with cabanas, a pool bar, and a giant aquarium that you can literally slide through from the second floor down into the pool (a water tube carries you through the middle of it).

The Golden Nugget has been suffering a bit in recent years but these new changes put it back on the top of the Downtown heap and make it competitive with major Strip resorts as well.

Green Valley Ranch
A major expansion has added a host of new amenities and gambling opportunities at this posh resort on the south side of town. A new adjunct to the main casino at Green Valley Ranch near the former race and sports book has added more slot machines, a couple of new restaurants, a new poker room, and an all-new race and sports book. The old one is currently walled off while they turn it into an entertainment venue. The addition is seamless with the older part of the casino and makes this place even more of a lure than it already was. Another winner.

Fiesta Henderson
There’s a bit of a dichotomy happening at the Fiesta Henderson. Once known as The Reserve, the original casino had a jungle theme and much of that remains in the older part of the public areas complete with hanging vines and stony outcroppings of rock. But a major new expansion shows the future of the hotel, which is much more in line with the look and feel established by corporate parent Station Casinos. Take the elevators out of the new parking garage and you enter the new casino area, with high ceilings, earth tones, accessible aisles, and plenty of lighting. The hotel registration has been redone to match this new look and they’ve also added a state-of-the-art race and sports book, a new bar, and a larger rewards center. More changes are on the way in 2007.

The Palms
The new Fantasy Tower at The Palms is getting a lot of press for its Fantasy Suites, opulent retreats for the rich and famous that most people will never get to stay in. There’s a basketball suite, complete with a hardwood half-court; an “Erotic Suite” that features its very own stripper pole; the Kingpin suite with, yes, a bowling alley; a hip-hop themed suite with a DJ booth and dance floor; and more.

The rooms you most likely will be staying in are very similar to the rooms in the older tower, which are to say lovely. It’s sort of W inspired; modern without being too over the top with fluffy white duvets, sleek furnishings, flat screen televisions, and Jacuzzi tubs standard in every room.

At the top of the tower is the new Playboy Club with a gaming salon, restaurant, and high-energy nightclub called Moon.

The pool area has also gotten a revamp with a multi-level deck featuring a sandy beach area, lots of cabanas, a bar with gaming tables, and even a suspended pool with a glass bottom.

The Cannery
The Cannery is one of the few casino-hotel options on the north side of town worth really talking about and a new addition has enhanced the appeal of the place. There’s a huge new parking garage that leads to a major casino expansion for plenty of slots, mostly of the nickel, penny, and quarter variety. Take the hallway toward the big new movie theater complex and you’ll find several new restaurants, a revised race and sports book, a new bingo room, and a new poker room.

Santa Fe
The unveiling of the first phase of the major overhaul to the Santa Fe Station on the far north side of town happens next week and will feature a new parking garage, a 259-seat race and sports book, two new restaurants (including the hotel’s first buffet), a new high-limit slot area, and more casino space for lower-limit gaming as well, adding more than 400 slots and video poker machines.

More changes are on the way here through 2007 including a new poker room, two additional restaurants including Tides Oyster Bar and Salt Lick BBQ, and a Center Bar concept similar to the ones at Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock Resort.

LV Q and A by Rick Garman

Question: I heard they just opened a Playboy Club in Las Vegas. What’s it like?

Answer: Yes, it’s true David – the bunnies are back and only in Las Vegas since this is the only Playboy Club in the world these days. It is combined with an upscale restaurant and a high-energy nightclub atop the new tower at The Palms.

In the battle for the title of “Hottest Nightclub in Las Vegas,” the focus has been on new, hip, original, and exclusive. Moon works that angle, while its sister Playboy Club does something new by going retro, turning a known brand on its ear and turning it into something still relevant in the new millennium.

The two clubs are distinct yet linked together by an escalator, elevators, and the long lines and high cover prices required to get in (an eye-popping $40, which merely gets you in the door).

After an interminable wait for one of the high-speed elevators you are whisked to the top floor of the tower and unleashed into the Moon universe. Done in futuristic silvers, whites, and mirror effects the club is a multi-level paradise of party-all-the-time insanity. There are multiple bars, a balcony overlooking the sizeable dance floor, two outdoor patios (warning: it gets really windy up here so make sure you are paying attention to what is happening with that little black dress), and even a retractable roof.

The overall vibe of the place seems to be more frat house-y than you normally find at a place like this, but that impression may have been due to the 80s and 90s rock that was playing while I happened to be there. Surprisingly Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” and Nirvana’s “Lithium” not only make great sing-along club jams but actually mix well together. I’m sure that a different selection of music may have reduced the “duuuuuude” atmosphere a little but the crowd definitely seemed to be a lot more interested in having a good time and a lot less interested in standing and posing, something that afflicts many clubs of this ilk. Although well past my party animal phase, this was a welcome change of pace.

The Playboy Club, located one level down, is a retro-chic version of Hugh Hefner’s mansion, with clubby nooks done with stone and wood wall treatments, new-millennium takes on leather wing-back chairs, and flat panel monitors over the fireplaces instead of paintings. Throw in the dozens of cotton-tailed servers and you have a deliriously over-the-top take on the Playboy mystique, complete with gaming tables to bring out the 007 in you. A tuxedo is not required, but you almost feel like you want to throw one on, grab a martini, and throw the dice with one arm while you put the other around a girl wearing bunny ears.

The crowds are epic, the drink prices sky-high, and while the rooftop locations offer great views, waiting for those elevators to make your entrance or you escape are a pain in the cotton-tail. Still, this is the kind of club that makes club-going entertaining again.

Question: What is the gay scene like in Las Vegas?

Answer: Unlike many other major cities, Las Vegas does not have a centralized neighborhood where you’ll find the majority of the gay nightlife, so there’s no Castro or West Hollywood or Halstead Street. Instead you’ll find pockets here and there where several gay clubs group together to form mini-West Hollywood’s and each caters to a slightly different taste.

The most popular club, with tourists at least, is Krave. Originally co-created by circuit party impresario Jeffrey Sanker, it’s the only “alternative lifestyle” club on The Strip, located on the south side of the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood. It’s a big, gorgeous club and it draws a good mixture of men and women, mostly younger, and almost all tourist.

Just east of there, about a block south of the Hard Rock Hotel, is a small collection of bars and clubs that is probably most known to tourists. The Gipsy is a very popular dance club that draws a fairly healthy mix of tourists and locals; Piranha is a new ultra-lounge/bar concept right next door; The Buffalo is across the street and caters primarily the leather/Levi crowd although it’s more Levi than leather; and the Free Zone is sort of a neighborhood style bar with a dance floor, entertainment on many nights, and video poker at the bar.

A few blocks east of The Sahara hotel is another small collection of bars and clubs in the Sahara Commercial Center. There’s a country and western bar and another that caters to the transgender community plus some sit and drink type places that fall completely under most tourists’ radar, and probably for good reason.

There are a few other bars scattered around town and depending on your taste, mood, and budget you should be able to find something to your liking.

There’s only one exclusively gay hotel in the city – the Blue Moon Resort, located just off Sahara next to Interstate 15. It’s a nice place with a festive clothing-optional pool area for those in the mood for an all-over tan.

You can get more information on some of the better gay bars in the nightlife section of Vegas4Visitors and I also recommend gayvegas.com and gaylasvegas.com for more details.

The Palms has unveiled plans for a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art, concert theater that is currently under construction and aptly named The Pearl. The new venue expected to open next spring will comfortably tuck into its intimate setting all of the high-end amenities you would find in larger venues. With special scalable curtains, The Pearl’s capacity can easily adjust to accommodate from 1,100 to 2,400 guests. In addition, the floor will allow for seated concert viewing or general admission standing room audiences. With no seating obstructions, the farthest seat from the stage will be a mere 120 feet away, allowing performers to personally connect with the entire audience. Two 14-foot by 16-foot video screens will be located on each side of the stage for close up looks at the on-stage action with additional plasma screens located throughout the concourse areas.

The Pearl will have three levels of seating with beverage stations and restroom facilities located on each level and feature 18 private and semi-private sky boxes with exclusive bars and restrooms and many including personal lounges.

The new concert facility will be hard wired to The Studio at The Palms, allowing artists to create a cost-effective live album with efficiency and without additional venue set-up. Additionally the facility is designed to host live television programs, sporting events and award shows.

Back of house amenities will be just as impressive featuring four dressing rooms; Wi-Fi technology throughout the backstage area; a green room; production offices; pre- and post- show event facilities perfect for parties, artist meet and greets and other special activities; private access to an outside entry, as well as entrance ways from The Studio at The Palms and the Fantasy Tower. Backstage will boast a separate disconnect for satellite and television production trucks as well as a two truck loading dock for easy movement of equipment.

MAMMA MIA! Celebrates 1500th Show

MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, will celebrate its 1500th show at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on November 29.

Now in its fourth triumphant year, MAMMA MIA! has been the most successful full-scale musical ever to play on the Las Vegas Strip. Named the Number #1 Show in Las Vegas by Mike Weatherford of the Las Vegas Review Journal, MAMMA MIA! has not only experienced success in Las Vegas – it has been seen by over 27 million people around the globe and has more productions playing worldwide than any other current Broadway musical.

Inspired by the story-telling magic of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’ songs, writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolds on a Greek island.  On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Songs including “Dancing Queen”; “The Winner Takes It All”; “Money, Money, Money” and “Take A Chance on Me” are all featured in this feel-good night of fun and laughter.

Tickets are priced at $110, $82.50 and $49.50 tax inclusive.  For tickets or more information call 1-877-632-7400.

Each session is two hours and space is limited, so reservations are recommended. Please call 784-5716 for more information.

PURE Praise
“Best Of” polls in the valley are a funny thing. Every year, we witness Olive Garden taking home “Best Italian Restaurant” categories while Taco Bell apparently reigns supreme for Mexican food in Las Vegas. That’s why this years “Best of the Valley” poll from local weekly pub “City Life” might have a little more credence than most. Ballot-stuffing attempts from PR firms not withstanding, “the good folks at Kirvin Doak Communications still tried it anyway [ballot stuffing that is], mailing identical ballots in the exact same Kirvin Doak envelope,” noted the “City Life” staff while praising its readers for their discriminating tastes. Taking home the prize for “Best Nightclub” was the biggest kid on the block, PURE Nightclub who according, to City Life staff writer Kevin Capp, “continues to attract a rich tapestry of rich celebs to its pearly gates, while maintaining a Tuesday night soiree dedicated to us golden locals, a tough balancing act the club manages with a surprising ease.”  PURE Management Group’s big boss Robert Frey was excited to hear the news and told the Eye, “Our group is very excited to have won this award. Getting recognized by the locals makes us very proud because we try our best to accommodate them on a nightly basis and they have supported us since we opened.”

Other notable outlets awarded by “City Life” readers include: N9NE Steakhouse (Best Steakhouse); Drai’s After Hours (Best After-hours); Freakin’ Frog (Best Bar); Bellagio (Best Strip Casino); KRAVE (Hottest Bartenders); and Body English’s Jason Habel, who took the Best VIP Host title from JET’s Brian Klimaski, who took home the award last year.

Request from Author Brian Rouff

I was wondering if you could do me a favor? I entered a contest for authors where we write a chapter that is a continuation of somebody else’s work. The finished product will be a book written by many different people, and the proceeds will go to a charity that promotes childhood literacy. Could you ask your readers to click on the link below and vote for #7? There’s no money or prizes, just the feeling that I helped contribute to a good cause.

Really appreciate the help. I owe you one.

SHOW REVIEW: Minnelli’s triumphant comeback could be a sign of more to come.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

Liza Minnelli’s life is a backstage saga of setbacks and comebacks, so it was only fitting that her return to the Strip last month was the stuff of a show tune.

In May 1998, the music hall legend quietly disappeared from Las Vegas stages after struggling through a stint that came right after the death of close family friend Frank Sinatra. She was overweight and fragile in her stage presence; her voice was shot.

October’s comeback at the Luxor — where she returns this weekend — was too long in the making, but worth the wait. Minnelli is 26 pounds lighter, she told the crowd, and showed off some dance steps to prove it. And her 60-year-old voice is impressively close to its old form, given that it’s laid bare for all to hear in front of a modest 12-piece band, with no buffering string section or backup singers. She even performed an a capella encore, “I’ll Be Seeing You.”

SHOW REVIEW: “Cavalia”

No Horsing Around: ‘Cavalia’ takes its acrobatic equine tribute seriously.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

Even with five Cirque du Soleil shows on the Strip, there’s still an allure to a big top looming near Interstate 15.

In late 1992, a similar white tent behind The Mirage heralded the arrival of Cirque du Soleil and its first Las Vegas effort, “Nouvelle Experience.” Unless you have been able to resist every Cirque since, the elaborate, 2,000-seat structure housing the Cirque-like “Cavalia” in the Rio’s north parking lot no longer has the same ability to surprise. And yet, perhaps miraculously, the show inside proves we still haven’t hit the outer limits of Cirque du Saturation.

“Cavalia” is staged outside the company by a fellow Canadian, early Cirque collaborator Normand Latourelle. Its celebration of horse and humans expands the vision of a previous big-top attraction, Cheval Theatre, which also was created by a Cirque veteran (Gilles Ste-Croix) to answer the question of what might have been had Cirque not famously ruled out the use of animals.

STAR FOR SIEGFRIED & ROY

Speaking of Siegfried and Roy, the two Las Vegas legends were presented with their own star last week in front of the Siegfried & Roy statue at The Mirage, where they performed for more than 13 years before Roy was seriously mauled by a tiger during one of their performances. At the ceremony, they said: “Our passion and love affair with Las Vegas began the first day we arrived over 30 years ago. The residents and visitors of what immediately became our hometown have allowed us to live our dreams and our fantasies. We have fulfilled our destiny of carrying on the traditions of magicians and magic.”

The Las Vegas Walk of Stars was developed in cooperation with Clark County, which sanctioned four miles of sidewalk to the east and west of Las Vegas Boulevard South between Sahara and Russell. Similar to the “Palm Springs Walk of Stars,” located along the sidewalks of Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, Calif., the Las Vegas project honors people of prominence in a variety of fields including entertainment, sports, literary, humanitarian, civic, military and pioneers. Each star is a three-feet-square slab of polished granite weighing 180 lbs. and inlaid with the recipient’s name and specialty.

Other recipients (with location of star and when they were received) are: Wayne Newton, Frontier Hotel, October 26, 2004; Liberace, Riviera Hotel, February 01, 2005; Frank Marino, Riviera Hotel, February 01, 2005; Rich Little, New York-New York, February 15, 2005; Line Renaud, Paris Hotel, October 24, 2005; Dick Jensen, Frontier Hotel, November 05, 2005; Mel Larson, Circus Circus, January 09, 200; Toni Hart, MGM Hotel, April 27, 2006; Chester Simms, Flamingo Hotel, May 06, 2006; John Stuart, New York-New York, May 30, 2006; Richard MacDonald, New York-New York, June 07, 2006; and Wayne Allyn Root, New York-New York, August 15, 2006. When you’re in town or on the Strip, take a look.

SHOW REVIEW: “Bottoms Up”

Things are Looking ‘Up’: Vintage ‘Bottoms’ revue gets yet another shot at Fitzgeralds.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

What seemed lost on the Strip seems found downtown.

The 42-year-old “Bottoms Up” revue, a genuine artifact by Las Vegas standards, seemed like it finally was ready to ride off into the sunset when it closed at the Flamingo two years ago this week.

The resilient show cropped up every few years and had a good four-year run at the Flamingo. But this time, really and truly, it appeared Las Vegas had evolved beyond the blackout-comedy show that first played the Castaways (where The Mirage now stands) in 1964.

But creator Breck Wall didn’t give up so easily. “Bottoms Up” has resurfaced in the enclosed lounge at Fitzgeralds and guess what? It really feels at home there. The six-person revue — three comedians, three dancers — fits just about perfectly in the cozy venue, and the retirement-aged crowd was laughing it up. Seniors seem to be getting swept aside on the Strip because they’re not buying $400 bottle service at Pure. But they still come to town and their money still spends.

“Bottoms Up” is a tricky show to describe — and for some, tricky to watch — because so much of it depends on how you respond to comedians Wall, David Harris and Sue Motsinger. It’s all about personality and their ability to sweep you into the creaky sketches.

Take the bit with Wall and Harris miming to song snippets as they pull various props out of a trunk. There would be little that’s funny about most people holding old green Princess phones and mouthing the words to Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald’s “Indian Love Call:” “When I’m calling you-u-u-u… You will answer too-o-o-o….”

But it’s funny here, because of how long these guys have known each other. Because of how long they’ve been doing the bit. And because they still seem to find it funny. Harris has this pliant face that recalls Buddy Hackett and Jimmy Durante, and a deadpan style that never lets him over-enjoy what he’s doing.

If the two don’t break you down when they hold up the light bulb (”You Light Up My Life”) or the pizza pie (”That’s Amore”), they’re gonna get you when Harris pulls out the Depends box during Britney Spears’ “Oops! … I Did It Again.” If not, you might as well pack up and leave. It doesn’t get any better.

Well, almost. The sketch about the men’s room urinals — better if you don’t ask — with Wall, Harris and male dancer Bryan Yates is reined in and so well-timed that it shows you what these guys are capable of if, well, they weren’t so set in their ways.

Even so, there is something to be said for old performers pretending to be even older: Harris and Motsinger as Ebeneezer Geezer and his squeeze Maydelle singing “Instead of Parcheesi, how about a little squeezy?” Or Motsinger as “Fatsy Cline” pulling a picture of Bill Clinton, a crutch and a golf club out of her cleavage as she croons “She’s Got You.”

And you can’t say the show overstays its welcome. The performance I caught ran only 50 minutes because a wardrobe malfunction kept Harris from doing his Cher spoof.

Is it possible to get someone under 60 to see “Bottom’s Up”? I offer the same idea I posed in 2000: Instead of the pointless dance interludes with Yates, Carrie Proffett and Amy Geldhos, rendered even more pointless by the tiny stage and minimal lighting, why not turn “Bottoms Up” into a burlesque revue?

The recent Miss Exotic World burlesque reunion, also held downtown at the nearby Celebrity Theatre, proves there’s a younger following for this vintage entertainment. Plenty of performers are preserving strip-tease routines as old as the jokes in “Bottoms Up.” Some of them are young, and some of them old enough to chase Harris around the stage or help him in and out of his Cher costume.

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer

Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.

Video Slots — I Love Lucy

In keeping with the other great IGT games based on popular themes and television shows, this is a five reel 12-line video slot machine which is also a bonus game as well as a progressive. All the popular characters from the TV show are represented in this game, but the most fun you will have is when you land on the Chocolate Factory Bonus. If you remember the TV episode on which this bonus is based, then you already know what I mean and what fun this is. In the event that you have not seen this episode, or aren’t familiar with what this means, I will attempt to describe it briefly.

In this scene, Lucy and Ethel are workers in a chocolate factory. Their job is to wrap chocolate treats which are coming down a conveyor belt. At first, all is well. But, the conveyor belt soon starts to run faster. And then faster. The faster the belt runs, the more difficult it is for our two ladies to wrap the chocolates. So, they try to eat as many of these treats as they can, all the while trying to wrap as many of the others as possible. In this Bonus round, the faster the conveyor belt runs and the more chocolates the ladies eat, the more bonus credits you will win. You’ve got to see it to believe it, and it’s great fun indeed!

There is another bonus as well. This one is called the Classic Moments Bonus. When three of these symbols land on any active pay line, the game takes you to the bonus screen where you have a choice of three classic scenes from the TV show. Pick one, it then plays in glorious black and white, and your bonus credits are awarded to your credit meter. And yes, of course, this is a progressive. The jackpot is achieved when you land all of the “heart” shaped I Love Lucy symbols on the winning active pay line. The top jackpot starts at $200,000.00, and is paid instantly (based on the regulatory requirements of the gaming jurisdiction in which you happened to have hit the jackpot).

I also wish to let you know that this game is available as a two-coin three reel slot machine. You can’t miss it because it will have the red “hear” shaped I Love Lucy sign on the glass at the top of the machine. Both games are progressives, and both are sure to be very entertaining. I happen to prefer to video game, but, again, that’s my own personal preference. Many times, the two-coin game may be as great an option as well as the video one.
