Everything Las Vegas Issue # 600
November 17th, 2006
Well it took 8 and 1/2 years but I finally made it to issue # 600.
I can’t begin to tell you all the wonderful things that have happened to me and Eileen from doing the newsletter.
The newsletter went from a little more than 700 original members to well over 70,000. When we switched over to our website, keeping track of the members was impossible as technically you no longer had to sign up to read the newsletter anymore. Since going to the web-based form of the newsletter our number of hits are literally “through the roof.” I owe a debt of gratitude to Hunter for this.
The newsletter led to me writing for E-Vegas, Gaming Today and what I consider to be the highlight of my Las Vegas writing, I had my own column in Casino Player magazine for a year.
I have personally had the privilage of personally meeting some of Las Vegas’ biggest stars such as David Copperfield, Clint Holmes, The Scintas, Reba McIntire, Mac King, Breck Wall, Larry G. Jones, Nathan Burton and many more.
It has been a wonderful ride but without my loyal members, there would be no “Everything Las Vegas.” So I want to thank you all for your support and hopefully I’ll get to meet each and every one of you in Las Vegas.
I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Steve
Eileen and I would like to wish all our members, their families and there friends a very Happy Thanksgiving.

“This was the most damage” to one of the wax figures, he said. “People are always touching them, but this was pretty rare.”
The wax creations, ranging from John F. Kennedy to George Clooney to porn star Jenna Jameson, cost between $200,000 and $250,000 to produce.
The back of Bush’s head was damaged in the fall, “but he’s been back on his feet for several days now,” Taylor said.

No question about it. Dominic Champagne had the tougher end of the deal between the Beatles and Cirque du Soleil. The Beatles (as in the business concern that stands for the group today) merely had to license the music for the “Love” show at The Mirage. Champagne had to write and direct something to go along with it, visuals that could hold up to whatever these classic songs mean to millions of people.“Love” is living up to the box-office expectations of such a power-marriage. The show runs neck and neck with “O” as the most successful of Cirque’s five on the Strip. If the 10 weekly performances don’t sell out in advance, they do with last-minute walk-up.More from The Las Vegas Review Journal here:

There are no discounts for our other shows, but currently there is a gaming promotion attached to every show ticket purchased at Sahara box office (Scintas, Amazing Johnathan, and Platters/Coasters/Drifters). Ticket stub allows Club Sahara member (new or existing) to purchase $25 in non-negotiable chips for $20 at the cashiers cage. It’s good only on night of the performance with photo ID, and is good for all table games except the poker room. Rules posted in the club.
As you can see, we have LOTS of great reasons to visit Sahara in November & December.
For a long time, Vegas was pretty much a wasteland during the holidays with the crowds choosing more traditional locations for their vacations. But that’s been changing in recent years and now the city pulls out all of the stops to get folks in the holiday spirit, Las Vegas style.Of course there is the annual holiday themed display at the Bellagio Conservatory and the giant Christmas tree in the plaza at Caesars Palace, but there are a few other interesting goings on this year that you should be aware of:The Ethel M. Chocolate Factory in Henderson is unveiling their annual Chocolate Wonderland on November 16th, an outdoor festival of more than 500,000 lights surrounding their botanical garden and the special chocolate sculptures they make for the event. It’s open every night from 5pm until 10pm and is free. Visit on a Friday or Saturday and the kids can talk to Santa and everyone can take in free concerts from local school choirs, bands, and dance troupes.Lake Las Vegas is gussying up the area for a series of holiday events including a Christmas tree lighting on November 17th with a concert by Clint Holmes, an ice skating rink, a Santa Claus for the kids every Saturday, strolling carolers every Friday, a gingerbread house competition, and more. You can get information the Lake Las Vegas website.
On December 9th you can dress up like Santa for a good cause and perhaps break a world record at the Las Vegas Great Santa Run. The event benefits Opportunity Village, a local organization that aids disabled adults and children throughout the Las Vegas area with education, assistance, and job opportunities. The event aims to have the largest gathering of Santas ever and will send them on a five mile run or a one mile walk to raise money. For more information visit the Opportunity Village website.
”Forever Plaid” at the Gold Coast is getting a holiday themed makeover with “Plaid Tidings,” adding Christmas music to the proceedings. It plays through the end of the year and then reverts back to the original version.

Earlier this year one of Downtown’s premiere properties The Lady Luck was shut down as new owners promised a major overhaul to the casino, the restaurants, the hotel buildings, and even the name of the property all due to open by early 2007. But drive by the place now and all you’ll see are a couple of gutted ground level buildings and lot of inaction. The owners insist that they are moving forward on their plans but that a lack of construction workers and supplies are causing them headaches, delaying their plans to reopen the property into 2008 most likely. It is true that with the massive construction boom in Las Vegas has is sucking up a lot of resources. The largest privately financed construction project in US history is currently underway on The Strip with the $7 billion CityCenter from MGM Mirage and another $4 billion is going to be thrown at the project that replaces The Stardust. These high profile deals have the power and money to get first dibs on whatever limited pool of talent and materials are out there, leaving places like the Lady Luck renovation bare.

New wine lounge invigorates.
By Thom Wise/Las Vegas Magazine
Onda
Where: Mirage
When: Open daily, 5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.
Cost: $25 to $35
Info: (702) 791-7223
It’s two! Two restaurants in one! And, I’m happy to report, this is one marriage that seems sure to last.
Kudos to The Mirage for aggressively and ingeniously updating its food offerings. As you turn right past the center “rain forest” — one of the top photo ops in the hotel — you see a bevy of new options: Japonais, Stack, Fin … and then Onda. It’s quite an impressive lineup, in a city full of amazing dining options.
Onda, the original Italian restaurant, opened in 1990, just a year after The Mirage premiered on the Strip. (Believe it or not, many of the original staff are still working there, a testament that something is working right.) Then, in June of this year, a new wine lounge was launched in the front half of the operation.
The wine lounge is a perfect stop for before or after the theater (The Beatles LOVE box office is a hop, skip and jump away), or as a place to meet up with friends before or after a night on the town. Sinatra recordings can be heard in the background, and the lounge has a crisp, white marble-yet-comfortable feel to it.
There’s a large community table that can accommodate up to 18, or any combination of smaller groups. Above it, a row of chandeliers adds an air of frivolous opulence, just the right balance of fun and elegance.
Affable general manager Randy Zammit loves explaining the Italian “tapas” concept of the wine lounge. There’s a well-chosen, concise wine list, any of which can be ordered by the glass, half-glass or the bottle. Coupled with that, there’s a cheese cart filled with aged fromages, anything from creamy goat cheese or morbier to house-made mozzarella or a delicious pecorino. As an accompaniment, order a selection of Italian salami, Spanish chorizo or delicious, dark duck prosciutto. It’s wine and nibble heaven. And, whatever you do, snag a plate of the truffle potato chips: thin slices of spuds lathered in truffle oil. Quite addictive.
If you’re more in the mood for a full meal, then make your way back to Onda, a bastion of traditional Italian cooking — just like Mama’s. The atmosphere is sedate and relaxed, with recipes covering the walls and grapes woven into the carpet.
Start with a caprese salad, the minestrone soup or a nice Caesar. Keep it light and simple, to better prepare yourself for the entrées. There’s a traditional lasagna and a terrific veal marsala with portobello mushrooms. For an unexpected treat, try the sweet pea ravioli in a delicate brown butter sauce. Onda is also renowned for its osso buco, a slow-cooked and tender veal shank served over risotto. Big thumbs up.
If there’s room, go with either the tiramisu or the crème brûlée — you can’t go wrong with either.
Sixteen years of regulars can’t be wrong: Onda still shines. Paired with the new wine lounge, it makes for a powerful combination.

By Bobbie Katz/Las Vegas Magazine La Cage
Where: Riviera
When: 7:30 p.m., Wed.-Mon.
Cost: $60.50, $71.50
Info: (702) 492-3960 or (866) 80-SHOWS
“People like the variety and nostalgia we bring to the show,” Aleman said. “I’ll put in stars that are in the public eye, in the tabloids and on TV, and are good for La Cage. When I find a new act, I’ll give him a one-month contract, then see how the audience reacts. If the audience likes the celebrity being portrayed, the act will stay in the show.
“In some cases, we have celebrities that have been depicted in the show for years because they are so popular — the legends are the most in-demand. But we always change their numbers, including revamping their physical images if the real stars have done so, as well as changing their songs and choreography. We’ve also had cast members who have been able to change into other stars, such as Brent Allen, who started out doing Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli and moved into doing Bette Midler. Part of the success of the show is the art of makeup.”
Someone who can speak to the art of maintaining an ongoing personality is the show’s colorful star Frank Marino, who has been portraying comedian Joan Rivers since the day La Cage opened. Since Rivers has gone through several plastic surgeries and image changes, Marino has gone over and above makeup to keep up with the times, having had numerous plastic surgeries himself. Reiterating that La Cage’s success is because of its ability to change, he quips that he currently has his plastic surgeon’s number on speed dial.
“They’ve done more work on me than on Mount Rushmore,” Marino said. “I’ve been plugged, tugged, shoved and lifted in every direction. I do 17 gown changes every show between Joan and the Femme Fatale character I’ve created to introduce all the acts and, over the years, fashion has also changed dramatically — I don’t even have to wear petticoats anymore. And, of course, my monologues change with current events as well. Right now, I’m talking about such issues as Lance Bass from *NSYNC and Mel Gibson.”
“This show has survived four presidents, two wars and the turn of the century,” he said. “When it opened, we had stars like Marilyn Monroe, Julie Andrews and the Pointer Sisters in the show. Now we have people like Britney Spears, J-Lo and Celine Dion, who were not heard of back then. Our show is a different show every time you come to see it.”
Adding to the magical mix of La Cage is the comedy of such characters as Tammy Spraynette and the dancing and music of Michael Jackson. Besides the celebrity impersonators, there are also showgirls and dancers in the 15-member cast, all of whom add to the question asked since the show’s inception: Who are the girls and who are the guys?
“All these years later, the show is still fun for me,” Aleman said, noting that he works with the acts on their makeup, choreography, music, costumes and stage presence. “I’m always having to come up with a new idea, a new plan.” All can rest assured that he has never been one to drag his feet on that one.

1) Plan. This means you might have to pay a little less attention to fantasy football and Coors Light in the weeks leading up to the event. But while you will have wives blaming you for ruining their marriages, you don’t need grooms blaming you for botching the party, too. Hotel reservations and number in the entourage should be the first priority. If your crew’s wallet is thick, the Palms Fantasy Suites are the place to crash. With several bachelor packages, the rooms turn into the party and pretty much take care of themselves. On the other end, if student loans are still taking a chunk of your entry-level paycheck, take a look at the suites at Hooters: fabulous spaces at reasonable prices, and Miss Hooters International deals blackjack there — bonus. Take into account location along with price; whether you go limo (always a better choice) or cab, the Strip is never a quick ride.
2) Get after it. Have an event, a climax. If it is a strip club, make sure you know which one. VEGAS.com offers an eight-hour tour complete with party bus to Spearmint Rhino, Cheetah’s, Jaguars, Sapphire and Crazy Horse Too.
Nightclub? Not recommended. While some clubs like Light (Bellagio) and VooDoo (Rio) cater to bachelor parties, you need to shell out big time to get some tables, and if you show up to a club with 14 dudes and no reservations, kiss the party goodbye. Look at someplace less upscale to let the crew get down if money is an issue. Carnaval Court (Harrah’s) and The Beach never frown when your prince starts to get wobbly. And, if you don’t feel like doing all the dirty work, several VIP service companies can plan the whole shebang for you, but it will cost some more dough. Striker VIP (strikervip.com) is one of the best.
3) Recap. Find a buffet. Have it planned beforehand, preferably with champagne (the World Buffet at the Rio is bubblicious). This gives you time to swap stories and collaborate on lies for when you get back, so everyone is on the same page.
4) Last but far from least, plan not to plan. The best party is the one where you wake up and don’t know where you are. Have a skeleton just so no time is wasted trying to figure out what to do, but let loose when the time comes for it.
Good luck and Godspeed, and get a checkup when you get home.

I get asked all the time how people can find a specific slot machine in a casino. Apparently fans of machines like “Little Green Men” and “Piggy Banking” are very intent on locating one, something that becomes more and more difficult as older machines get phased out for newer ones.I used to tell people who asked that question that there is no really good way to do that other than to call every casino and ask since nobody had any kind of published list of what machine was where. That has all changed now, at least for Harrah’s casinos.Harrah’s has unveiled a new online tool called Slot Finder, an interactive database of slot machines at all of its casinos nationwide including their Vegas outlets Harrah’s, The Rio, Flamingo, Paris, Bally’s, and Caesars Palace. It’s really pretty cool – it allows you to search by casino, by denomination, reel or video machines, and machine name plus offers lists of hot new slots, video poker machines, and more. Harrah’s promises they will keep the lists up to date, using real time casino inventory lists to make sure you don’t get directed to a casino that doesn’t have what you’re looking for.
You can find the Slot Finder at

Despite its very public struggles, officials with the Las Vegas Monorail are moving forward with plans to expand the system to the airport and additional locations on and near The Strip. The proposal is not finalized but early reports suggest that the expansion would send a spur east along Harmon Avenue with stops at the upcoming W Resort at Harmon and Koval and The Hard Rock at Harmon and Paradise before turning south on Swenson Avenue with a stop at the Thomas and Mack Center before heading into all of McCarran International’s main terminals.Other spurs could link the main line to the upcoming Stardust replacement Echelon Place and according to monorail officials they are in talks to supplement or replace the people moving systems on the west side of the Strip from Mandalay Bay to The Mirage.Additional stops are being considered on the main line at the Sands Expo and Convention Center and northward to The Stratosphere.
All of this is very ambitious for a system that has suffered from low ridership numbers that have been disappointing at best. Initially projected to carry 50,000 riders a day the system has been running lately at about half that and it has never turned a profit. Large cash reserves have kept the system running despite the fact that its bond rating has been reduced to “junk.”
So how would they pay for the expansion? Analysts suggest that with contributions from the casinos the system would link to and public support from same a new bond offering would probably work. The airport link would be a crucial one in the effort to boost traffic, which could ultimately lead to a more stable financial picture.
The monorail company is expected to make a formal announcement in early 2007 but even if all goes smoothly it will be years before the expanded tracks are ready for riders.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Copperfield buys islands in Bahamas.
David Copperfield is doing all right for himself these days.
Leading up to this 50th birthday Saturday, the illusionist bought a $50 million cluster of private islands in the Bahamas, where he says he has discovered the Fountain of Youth.
Four tiny islands in the Exuma chain of the southern Bahamas include Musha Cay, a resort that rents for about $25,000 a day to the likes of Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey.
“It’s a private island that was chartered out… rented all at once to one party (up to 24) at a time. It was set up to do that,” Copperfield explains. “If you had all the money in the world and could pick any place to go, that’s the place.”

The girlie show boom is going, well, bust, as the closing of “Cover Girls” at the Golden Nugget makes three to disappear in the past month. The show closed last weekend after barely more than three weeks in the resort’s new theater. “Simply Ballroom,” the companion show that shared some cast members as well as producer Jon Conway, remains open. But the ballroom show was up and running in England, while “Cover Girls” was a new effort that suffered from an identity crisis, according to those close to the production. Neither Conway nor hotel staffers could decide what they wanted the revue to accomplish, and it was being changed so much during its short run it never had a chance to catch a stride.More from The Las Vegas Review Journal here:

Moon / Playboy Club Las Vegas Review
By PJ Perez/From Vegas.Com
At the top of the Palms Casino-Resort’s Fantasy Tower, the art of nightlife has been taken to a bold, new level – more than 50 stories above the streets of Las Vegas.N9NE Group – already an innovator of Vegas nightlife and dining with its other Palms venues, N9NE Steakhouse, Rain nightclub and ghostbar – has topped even itself with the opening of Moon Nightclub and Playboy Club. The two venues are part of a triple-threat assault on all five senses that begins with the Italian delights of Nove Italiano restaurant on the 51st floor of the Fantasy Tower. But dinner there is a mere prelude to the delights waiting on the two stories above.
Directly above Nove Italiano is the uniquely Vegas location of the Playboy Club. Awash in rich, dark colors, the club combines the mood of vintage Las Vegas with the classic feel of the “good life” associated with the Playboy brand. If you took away the wall of plasma screens displaying the visual riches of Playboy and the glow of the Playboy-themed slots, you might find yourself lost in mid-20th century class and glamour.
And Bunnies, of course.
Playboy Club combines the relaxed atmosphere of a lounge – including plush leather and reptile-skin sofas, chairs and settees – with an exclusive live gaming pit, replete with Playboy Bunny dealers.
The iconic Playboy Bunny logo is everywhere, from subtle touches like the buttons on the cushioned seating and the ornate tabletops to more overt images such as the neon bunny heads behind the window-backed bar and the red-and-black logo-patterned carpet.
Despite that, the atmosphere is classy, cinematic and undeniably appealing. A DJ provides a soundtrack at a low volume that encourages lively conversation, floor-to-ceiling windows provide amazing views of Las Vegas, and an exclusive VIP area features its own bar, fireplace and even a few Playboy brand pinball machines.
Just a brief elevator or escalator ride from the refined-yet-playful atmosphere of Playboy Club is an equally-appealing – yet totally different – location to indulge in senses-shattering debauchery, Moon nightclub.
Located on the 53rd floor of the Fantasy Tower, Moon creates a dramatic, surreal environment for discerning party-goers.
The 12,500-square-foot club features innovative design elements that make Moon stand out in a city known for excess. From the color-changing, glass-tile floor to the majestic, floor-to-ceiling windows that provide unrivaled views of Sin City, every aspect of this boutique nightclub begs for attention.
However, the crowning feature is undoubtedly the massive retractable roof that opens to reveal an incredible view of the desert sky and stars. When closed, the ceiling serves as a massive video screen, displaying giant images of the club captured by a series of cameras.
Moon also boats multiple bars, two ultra lounge-style side rooms and a VIP balcony accessible via two dramatic steel-and-glass staircases.
