NORM: Prince’s LV reign has 3121 theme
Prince’s headliner deal with the Rio launches Nov. 10, with the Grammy winner taking over Club Rio and a restaurant to be called 3121 Jazz Cuisine.
The club, where Prince will appear when his schedule allows, will be known as 3121, the title of his most recent CD.
A Prince show will cost $125 per person or $312.10 for the dinner and show package.
On Wednesdays, Prince’s special guest performers will be featured for $31.21. Thursdays will be Latin Libido Night, with a cover charge of $31.21. Doors will open at 10 p.m. The restaurant will open daily at 5 p.m.
With Prince, there’s always a bit of mystery, and he’s created more with the many 3121 references. But a member of Prince’s camp, said it is not a biblical reference, as some have speculated. Prince converted to Jehovah’s Witness about five years ago.
Psalms 31:21 reads: “Blessed be Jehovah: For he hath showed me his marvelous loving kindness in a strong city.”

STARDUST MEMORIES: Boyd helped end era of mob control of Las Vegas casinos.
By Rod Smith/Las Vegas Review Journal
When the Stardust closes for good this week, Boyd Gaming Corp. Chairman Bill Boyd will mark the end of another era in Las Vegas.
Boyd’s career has spanned the transition of Las Vegas casinos from mob-run operations to corporate-owned companies, said David Schwartz, director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Center for Gaming Research.
“(Before) he and his father (Sam) built the California in 1975, the Boyd Group was a relatively small group of 75 investors,” he said.
“It’s impossible that that group could have expanded nationally as Boyd Gaming (had it not) incorporated in 1988 and offered its stock on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) in 1993,” Schwartz said.

NORM: The Stardust saw its share of stars.
Elvis was a lounge regular, checking out Brendan Bowyer, who was billed as “Ireland’s answer to Elvis.
“Valerie Perrine and Goldie Hawn stood out on the Stardust’s stage long before they hit it big in Hollywood. The long parade of stars who passed through the Stardust since 1958 is almost over.
While Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme bring down the final curtain tonight in Old Vegas style, the Fetish & Fantasy Halloween Ball ends an era with a racier punctuation mark.
Record crowds were expected for the final week. The Stardust closes at noon on Wednesday, making way for Boyd Gaming’s $1 billion-plus Echelon Place.
Perrine was a lead nude dancer in the Stardust’s Lido de Paris in the late 1960s before landing in Hollywood. Within a few years, she had the role as Lenny Bruce’s stripper wife in “Lenny” and earned an Academy Award nomination for best actress, playing opposite Dustin Hoffman.
Hawn was the cover model for the Christmas 1967 issue of Stardust News, “a pioneer in direct marketing to frequent hotel guests,” according to the new book “The Stardust of Yesterday: Reflections on a Las Vegas Legend,” published by Stephens Press.
Not long after leaving Las Vegas, Hawn was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress for “Cactus Flower.”

STARDUST MEMORIES: LONGTIME EMPLOYEES REFLECT ON THEIR HAPPY YEARS AT THE RESORT
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
Some of the Strip’s largest resorts — The Mirage, Excalibur, Treasure Island, Bellagio, The Venetian, MGM Grand, New York-New York, Paris Las Vegas, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Monte Carlo and Wynn Las Vegas — have opened since 1989, enticing workers from competing casinos.
For some longtime Stardust employees, nothing could lure them from their jobs at the aging property.
As the Stardust closes Wednesday to make way for the $4 billion Echelon, many Stardust workers — some with three or four decades of experience at the iconic strip casino — expressed no regrets about ignoring opportunities at the flashier resorts.

NORM: Stardust memories flow like champagne
Many people arrived at the Stardust on Saturday in their Sunday best to bid farewell to an old friend.
Richard from Denver wore a tuxedo, a nod to a bygone era when a show on the Strip was a glamorous occasion.
Former Lido de Paris dancers Margo Mansergh, Valerie Chapman and Joey Thomas showed up to see their old home, the stage in the Stardust Theatre, for one last time.
“It hits you right here,” said Chapman, placing her hand up to her throat.
Minutes after Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme closed the showroom, after a multitude of Frank Sinatra songs, many in the crowd lingered to pose for photos in front of the gold-colored curtain.
Backstage, a party raged as longtime pals of Lawrence and Gorme gathered for a spirited farewell and storytelling.
Frankie Avalon stopped by. Bob Stupak was on a bar stool, next to the ever-effervescent Gorme, who was medicinally treating her bad knee.
Lawrence was working the room, one last time.
After walking off the stage ramp, I spotted the showroom staff gathered near the exit, their tuxedo jackets already off and bow ties undone.
Champagne glasses held aloft, they were saluting the Stardust with a somber round of toasts.

John Katsilometes sidles up to Bill Boyd on the morning he closes the door on the legendary Stardust amid a festive atmosphere.
Bill Boyd has his Stardust memories, of course. But the chairman and chief operating officer of Boyd Gaming also made off with a significant memento as the hotel closed the doors forever at noon Wednesday.
“There’s a picture of me at William B’s I’ve always liked,” Boyd said, referring to the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant that is named for him. “I’m a lot younger, in my 30s. I have a m ustache. I look pretty good (laughs). A lot of people don’t know it’s me and that picture has been hanging up at William B’s ever since it opened, in 1987. So I took that.”
Boyd, who turns 75 on Saturday, posed for photos and met with dozens of former employees and customers as the Robbie Howard Band played “Mack the Knife” and other standards in a slammed gaming pit.
“Well, it’s a lot more emotional than I thought it would be,” Boyd said of the hotel’s final day of operation. “It’s difficult to say goodbye to all of the great employees and loyal customers. There are a lot of people who made the Stardust what it is.”
Slot machine betting was halted at 7:30 a.m. As noon approached, Howard announced “the longest conga line ever” to lead the crowd out of the casino’s main entrance, and launched into “When the Saints Go Marching In.”
Outside, the tune playing on the hotel’s sound system was probably more appropriate: John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me” (there’d be days like this).
NoteMart
As Boyd was surrounded by well-wishers, one gentleman waiting for him to sign a book turned to me and said, “Isn’t it amazing how much he looks like Liberace?” Wow. Not exactly …
Earlier this week Wayne Newton checked in via e-mail (and that e-mail was HOT!) on the closing of the Stardust, where he headlined for several years: “Anything that lives, grows or diminishes. So while the closing of the Stardust is bittersweet, it does reflect the ever-changing landscape of our great city. Many great talents reveled in the ’star-dust,’ and with the new project, many more will. I wish Boyd Gaming much success with Echelon Place.” …
Of all the facts and figures unearthed about the Stardust as the old hotel closes, this might be the most startling: At the time of the announcement that the Stardust would close, 111 employees had worked there for at least 30 years. “I haven’t heard that specific number, but I believe it,” Boyd said. “We have been here for 23 years (when Boyd purchased the property) and I know there were many people who had been with the Stardust for many years even then. We have placed as many as we can (in other Boyd properties), and quite a few have retired rather than work anywhere but the Stardust.” Among those on hand for the closing was Betty Roberts, a waitress at the Stardust from its opening in 1958 to 2000, when she retired. “Oh, gosh, I don’t know what to say,” she said just after showing Boyd a photo of the hotel staff on its first day of operation. “But I was smart - I didn’t just work at the Stardust, I bought a lot of land in the old days.”

Next dust heap may be Hilton, some say
By Rod Smith/Las Vegas Review Journal
Colony Capital’s 3,174-room Las Vegas Hilton could soon be history, Strip scuttlebutt suggests. Deutsche Bank’s Bill Lerner last week told investors “recent channel checks” suggest wrecking crews in the next 12 months to 18 months will level an unidentified hotel-casino that hasn’t hit anyone’s radar yet. Reliable insiders, however, say the target will be the iconic former International. That’s consistent with plans previously presented to state regulators. Should the announcement come, Lerner predicts improving returns for Strip operators. Moreover, given current investor expectations of more lower tier property closings and more development of upscale projects, Lerner says developers likely will move toward midlevel properties as an alternative to added upscale supply.
MIKE WEATHERFORD: Age state of mind on Strip
If all went according to plan, Saturday night marked the end of an era: Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme closing the curtain on the Stardust and counting down to the end of an entire Las Vegas era.
Young dollars rule the Strip, and the days of 60-plus entertainers in tuxedos are over, right?
Well, maybe the tuxedo part.
If you fast forward to 2008 and 2010, contrasts emerge in the plans for two 4,000-seat theaters managed by AEG Live: the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and a new one that will be part of the Echelon Place project replacing the Stardust.

‘Tis the Season for The Amazing Johnathan
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine
Amazing Johnathan
Where: Sahara
When: 10 p.m. Fri.-Wed.
Cost:$60.39
Info: (702) 492-3960 or (866) 80 SHOWS
Dubbed the “Freddie Krueger of Comedy,” The Amazing Johnathan has been a Las Vegas staple for the past seven years, offering audiences a healthy dose of one-of-a-kind humor. And if ever there were a holiday tailor-made for the self-proclaimed madman of comedy and magic, then Halloween fits Johnathan like a razor-sharp glove.
Performing nightly at the Sahara, Johnathan indulges in the kind of shock theater that would make your mother blush, yet he makes it work. Better yet, he makes it funny. Whether tormenting an audience member onstage with quips, gags and assorted tricks for the better half of a performance, or hurling insults at his assistant, there’s something undeniably magnetic about the performer.
His shaggy red hair spilling over a trademark headband, Johnathan looks like some sort of deranged fitness instructor, except instead of shaping bodies, he’s molding minds—very warped ones.
His assistant, Psychic Tanya (pictured), proceeds from the breathy, buxom pinup-ingénue realm once inhabited by Marilyn Monroe. She plays up her sex appeal—and her blondness—imbuing her character with the kind of ditzy humor that makes her an easy target for Johnathan’s wisecracks. As a result, he’s not above sticking a pair of scissors into her scalp, or stapling a playing card to her noggin.
While decked out in all the trappings of a magic show, Johnathan’s act is all about comedy. And the worst-kept secret is that he never really gets around to performing much magic. Instead, inventive gags and fumbling sleight of hand become the foil for his comedic assault. A list of things Johnathan can’t do is brought out, with a stagehand presenting the seemingly interminable list. It’s all self-deprecating, and that gets to the heart of Johnathan’s shtick. He knows who he is and what he’s good at, and he sticks to it.
Although he has made Vegas his home—in a mansion filled with practical jokes not unlike his stage show, no less—Johnathan spent some time in New York recently, filming a one-hour special for Comedy Central, Wrong on Every Level. The new special highlights the best of his Sahara routine, plus a smattering of new material that should delight old fans, while introducing newbies to his outrageous brand of comedy. The special premieres on Nov. 18 at 10 p.m.
After seven years in Las Vegas, Johnathan’s maverick humor has found a place to rest its bones. With a raised eyebrow, a conniving grin and a knack for the unexpected, the manifestation of everything your mother told you to beware has carved out a niche that is as gruesome as a jack-o’-lantern by Thanksgiving Day and as wildly hilarious as anything you could expect out of the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Harrah’s looks at bridge, expansion at Paris-Las Vegas
BY DAVID MCKEE /Las Vegas Business Press
Although it is officially noncommittal on its plans for the Four Corners area — pending a much-anticipated master plan — Harrah’s Entertainment has mapped out substantial changes for Paris-Las Vegas. If realized, these would entail a significant rerouting of pedestrian traffic in front of the Parisian-themed resort.
According to a use-permit application filed with the Clark County Commission, pedestrians heading up and down the east side of the Strip would no longer be required to cross the 93-foot width of Paris-Las Vegas’ driveway. Were Harrah’s to get its wish, foot traffic would swerve 114 feet inland, “to create a promenade that results in a safer environment for pedestrians and patrons of the resort.” Escalators, stairs and/or elevators would then convey sightseers onto a 24-foot-high pedestrian bridge, extending 180 feet across the casino-hotel’s traffic roundabout.

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer
Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.
Video Slots - Marilyn Monroe
As the song says: “I wish I could’ve know you, but I was just a kid, your candle burned out long ago, your legend never did.” I’m not ashamed to say it, I was in love with Marilyn Monroe. Probably just like most boys and men the world over. I was eight years old when she died, and I only began to appreciate who she was much later in life, when I grew up and started to watch these great old films.
Now IGT has made a series of video slots based around the theme of the old silver screen days of the cinema. This series of machines are called the Diamond Cinema, and the two games I will showcase here are this one, based on Marilyn Monroe, and the second one, just below, based on the famed duo of actors in the classic film Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
This game features various bonuses and many ways to win. When a wild symbol lands on the second and fourth reels, the whole reel becomes animated. This shows the legendary scene where Marilyn’s flowing white dress blows up around her waist as the subway train passes below and causes wind to blow up through the manhole. This is the classic scene from the film “The Seven Year Itch”, which Marilyn Monroe made while married to baseball’s legendary hitter Joe DiMaggio, who absolutely hated this scene.
Actually, the real truth behind the scene you get to see in the movie is that this was the only scene which was shot on a Hollywood sound stage. The rest of the film was made on location in New York. But when they were trying to film this scene, on a public street, there were so many people around watching them make that scene, and so many of them kept yelling at Marilyn and whistling whoopee, that the director could not get the shot. Also, Marilyn’s husband, Joe DiMaggio, was livid with this scene, and he kept yelling that he doesn’t want his wife to be shown “half naked” to the whole world.
The actual scenes shot in New York on that street show Marilyn bare all the way to her waist and there is indeed a whole lot of Marilyn to be seen. In the end, these scenes were cut out of the film, and a very private scene was staged on a soundstage at the studio in Hollywood, which produced the very mild and timid scene we now see in the movie. Nevertheless, that scene is still considered as racy, and as a sort of a trademark of Marilyn’s allure. Well, so much for reminiscing. Back to the game.
When three, four or five of the Marilyn Bonus Magazine symbols land left-to-right on any active payline, you will get to play the Magazine Bonus. The voice of an actress impersonating the voice of Marilyn will then guide you through the bonus game. In this game, Marilyn’s image is shown on the covers of 12 magazines. Touch the magazine cover, and each will reveal a credit value bonus, a credit value plus another pick, or a gift box.
All the credit values accumulate as the round progresses. For each extra pick you reveal, Marilyn’s voice will ask you to make another pick. And so on. If you get the gift box, you are then guided to the Gift Box Bonus. You will see a screen with several gift boxes. Pick a box and it will reveal your additional win credit value, which is then added to everything else you have won so far.

KELLIE KARL PLAYS TONY’S PSYCHIATRIST IN `THE SOPRANOS LAST SUPPER’
New Orleans’ Southern Belle sings, dances, acts and even impersonated Stevie Nicks
Kellie Karl may be one of the most versatile entertainers on the Las Vegas Strip and presently can be seen nightly in “The Sopranos Last Supper” at the Harmon Theater at the Aladdin’s Desert Passage.
She said, “I play Tony’s psychiatrist in the musical at the Harmon Theater. I’m from New Orleans, the city that used to be and is no longer. My entire family is from there and came here during the storm. Her house survived but my other relatives lost everything. My mother could not wait to get back home.”
Kellie said, “I played Stevie Nicks in a show called `Hail Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll’ at Whiskey Pete’s. That was my first impersonation. My first professional show was in `Can Can’ at the Royal Sonespa Hotel.”
She quipped, “I’m the most networking girl in Las Vegas and saw that `The Sopranos’ had an audition. They thought I looked the most like the mob psychiatrist and they hired me. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve been playing this character since April. I love doing Dr. Melfri. Her cousins came in to see me perform a couple of times. They said you are just like my cousin Lorraine Bracco. One of them was more reserved but the other was saying `You really remind me of my cousin. You really did a good job. One came and then the sister told the other to see the show.”
Kellie said, “I was a cheerleader growing up in New Orleans. I loved to dance but my parents think I was rebellious. I was a good kid. I had a stay at home mom and my dad was a chemical engineer. I always knew I would be a dancer. I trained for singing, dancing and acting. My father used to love watching `The Sopranos’ but he has passed away. I’m not Italian but rather of French and Irish descent. The late Christopher Reeves movies are my favorite. I like the late River Phoenix too.”
She said, “I love taking all my friends to Terrible Herbst’s late night specials from midnight to 6 a.m. There are all kinds of entertainers that hang out there. The last book I read was a self-help book `Path to Recovery.’ I’d rather be Oprah if I could be any star. I love her philanthropy efforts. I worked in `Creole Heat’ on Bourbon Street before I came to Las Vegas. Then I came here about four years ago. I don’t like living on the west side because of the traffic on US 95. I have an addiction to Doritos. I love instrumental music. I am a DJ and try to keep up on all that kind of stuff. I love the Moody Blues. My favorite song is `Nights in White Satin.’”
Kellie said, “I would love to live in Hawaii. I worked as a novelty act on a cruise ship It was so wonderful. I sang and did some comedy in a show. This show has everything and the food is great. Uncle Junior is my favorite character. He makes me laugh. My favorite restaurant is MIXX at the top of The HOTEL.”

SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand and Joël Robuchon Earn Prestigious 2007 AAA Five Diamond Award
AAA has awarded SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand and Joël Robuchon with the highly coveted Five Diamond Award, an accolade that recognizes these establishments among the most elite hotels and restaurants in the world.
“The AAA Five Diamond Award is among the highest compliments a hotel or restaurant can receive,” said MGM Grand President & COO Gamal Aziz. “For SKYLOFTS and Joël Robuchon to earn this distinction reflects MGM Grand’s commitment to delivering superior products and experiences to our guests.”
For 2007, AAA evaluated more than 60,000 hotels and dining establishments across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean throughout a 12-month period. Of those, only 93 resorts and 58 restaurants earned the esteemed AAA Five Diamond designation.
These prestigious honors follow a multi-year evolution that has redefined MGM Grand as the ultimate Las Vegas experience. SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand, one of only five Las Vegas hotels to earn this honor, debuted in January 2005 as a rare and private sanctuary of 51 two-story accommodations with expansive views of the Las Vegas skyline. SKYLOFTS provides the quintessential Loft environment and the height of personalized attention including Dream, Spa and Music Butlers, 24-hour concierge service, luggage packing and unpacking services and pre-engraved stationery.
Culinary history was made in Las Vegas when legendary chef Joël Robuchon opened his first fine dining restaurant in the United States at MGM Grand in September 2005. Named “Chef of the Century” along with scores of other accolades and honors, Chef Joël Robuchon presents unparalleled cuisine in a stunning setting. In a city which has become known as a world-class dining destination, Joël Robuchon stands out among the best as one of only four Five Diamond restaurant award winners.
Chef Joël Robuchon said, “This is an incredible honor for the restaurant, and I am thrilled to be part of this outstanding resort.”
Hotels and restaurants must meet a list of stringent criteria as determined by AAA tourism editors and trained professionals to receive the AAA Five Diamond Award.
Michael Geeser, spokesperson for AAA Nevada, said, “California and Nevada are the only states to gain both a Five Diamond lodging and a Five Diamond restaurant and MGM Grand did it at one property. With SKYLOFTS at MGM Grand and Joël Robuchon, MGM Grand once again has shown it is one of the premier properties on the Las Vegas Strip.”

Bellagio Continues to Shine as Only Hotel in the Country with Two Five Diamond Restaurants
For the sixth consecutive year, Bellagio has received AAA’s prestigious Five Diamond Award as did Julian Serrano’s renowned restaurant, Picasso. Additionally, Le Cirque received the distinction for the fourth consecutive year, making Bellagio once again the only hotel in the United States to be home to two AAA Five Diamond restaurants.
“These AAA distinctions are a tremendous honor and recognize the commitment each of our employees makes every day,” said William P. McBeath, president and COO of Bellagio. “We consistently strive to maintain the highest level of quality for our guests. Recognitions such as AAA’s tell us that we are succeeding in that area.”
Picasso and Le Cirque are among only four restaurants in Las Vegas to earn this coveted award. With many of the finest restaurants in the world located in Las Vegas, this honor substantiates these restaurants’ tremendous achievements.
Julian Serrano, executive chef at Picasso, said, “To receive this prestigious award for six consecutive years is a great honor and reaffirms to our team that we are successful in creating an exceptional dining experience.”
The regions of France and Spain where Picasso spent much of his life inspire Chef Serrano’s exceptional Mediterranean cuisine. Picasso masterpieces, as well as a collection of his charming ceramic pieces, further delight the senses of diners enjoying the Picasso experience.
Created by Sirio Maccioni, known as the world’s most charismatic restaurateur, Le Cirque invites guests to indulge and relish world-class wines, haute cuisine and luxurious service in an intimate setting. Le Cirque’s opulent dining room is complemented by a breathtaking panoramic view of Bellagio’s lake.
Mario Maccioni, creator of Le Cirque, said, “At Le Cirque, our goal is to provide a memorable experience for every guest who comes through our doors. We are thrilled to receive this award once again.”
Michael Geeser, spokesperson for AAA Nevada, said, “In attaining multiple Five Diamond Awards, Bellagio, Picasso and Le Cirque have been able to show they can provide the highest level of service while maintaining that level on a consistent basis. High-level service and consistency are hallmarks of Five Diamond properties and Bellagio embodies it. They’ve also elevated Las Vegas’ reputation as one of the premier destinations in the world.”
AAA evaluated more than 60,000 hotels and dining establishments across the United States, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico throughout a 12-month period. Of those, only 93 resorts and 58 restaurants earned the highly coveted AAA Five Diamond rating for 2007.
To be considered for AAA rating and approval, restaurants and lodgings undergo a thorough evaluation by full-time, trained, professional tourism editors. Five Diamond establishments go through a much more extensive review. The entire experience, from arrival through departure, is taken into account.

THE STRIP: Wynn dealers’ complaints rejected.
Commissioner says tip-sharing program is legal.
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
Nevada’s labor commissioner Wednesday rejected complaints filed by more than 100 dealers over Wynn Las Vegas’ new tip pooling policy, saying the program where tips are now shared between dealers and supervisors is legal.
“Based on what we’ve seen, Wynn Resorts is not violating state law regarding tip pooling,” Labor Commissioner Michael Tanchek said.
Tanchek said the state’s Department of Business and Industry will continue to look at Wynn Las Vegas’ new policy and investigate any new complaints. He also cautioned other companies about instituting a similar tip-sharing concept.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Cirque stumbles when traveling ‘Delirium’ stops on the Strip
What would be good for Pink Floyd may not be good for the Strip. Cirque du Soleil’s “Delirium” may have settled once and for all the question of how many Cirques are too many in Las Vegas.
The company had high hopes for last weekend’s touring arena show at the MGM Grand Garden to perhaps drop by again to cover for some of the resident shows during their vacations. But the audience for the first of two performances last weekend — a bad one after Labor Day, to be sure — left plenty of empty rows in the higher sections and did not seem fully engaged. Many filed out during the “Allegra” encore number.
It’s important to remember that in some markets, “Delirium” is the first time the circus has come to town. Most people hold a special place for their first encounter with Cirque, perhaps explaining why the oldest running Las Vegas show, “Mystere,” remains the stated favorite of many locals.

From “Eye On Vegas”
Top Chef Returns Breaking News
In the inaugural season of Top Chef, the hit reality series from Bravo, culinary hopefuls from Las Vegas gave a great showing and proved to be the show’s most memorable participants. Finalist Tiffani Faison, who had been serving tables at Tao Las Vegas, lost in the finals and Stephen Aspirinio, who was working as a sommelier for Nob Hill (MGM Grand), created a true love him or hate him crowd following before bowing out in the semi-finals. This year, Top Chef producers once again came to Las Vegas Food & Beverage Magazine looking for young culinary talent to plug into the second season. After providing the enigmatic Aspirinio last season, we found another sharp up-and-comer looking for his break in Marcel Vignon, currently serving as master cook under Joel Robuchon. While Marcel gladly admits he can be bossy in the kitchen, he insists his creative dishes will earn him respect, which should make for some must-see T.V. Vignon isn’t the only Las Vegan who will find himself battling for Top Chef host Tom Colicchio’s admiration. Another MGM staffer who has made the show is Emily Sprissler, a line cook at Nob Hill under the amazingly talented executive chef, Sven Mede. But wait, there’s more. Two more Las Vegas residences have also made the show. Otto Borsich is an instructor at theLas Vegas Culinary Institute, and while he might be the show’s older contestant, don’t take him lightly as he once served as a cook on a nuclear submarine. Lastly, Elia Aboumrad rounds out the culinary quartet with an interesting resume that reportedly boasts 34 (!) culinary degrees.
Getting Social
There’s just something very, very cool about Social House. The newest venture from PURE Management Group, and their very first restaurant, was built with two goals in mind: to service the industry locals just as much as the tourists and to provide a late-night venue in which to find great fare in a fun and cool environment. Right off the bat, Social House is achieving those goals already. With former Nobu disciple and star-in-waiting Joe Elevado as its executive chef, Social House certainly provides an amazing menu that highlights both cooked and prepared entrees, as well a large sushi list. Social House gives Elevado the perfect platform for which to show off his unique blend of Nobu classic techniques, with new school flavors and ingredients that show a certain nod to his Filipino heritage. We would’ve liked to have seen a larger list of original sushi roles, but Elevado more than makes up for it with dishes like Shima Aji with Social House Salsa, Garlic Oil Seared Kobe and Tamarind Short Ribs.
The layout of Social House is another treat, especially for those who once gazed upon the pirate village of Treasure Island and wondered what was behind the walls. The restaurant boasts three bars (you can eat at all of them) and a sushi bar as well as a fourth bar and small lounge on the ground level greeting patrons at the entrance. The balcony is another high point. Directly above the Tangerine Nightclub patio, it overlooks the Strip and Treasure Island lagoon providing a bird’s-eye view of the Sirens of TI water show below. Another neat feature is the 30-person private dining room, which used to serve as Steve Wynn’s office back when the casino executive held residence at Treasure Island.
Since PURE Management Group’s roots are of the nightlife variety, it’s not surprising that the Social House beverage program is another highpoint. Yes, bottle service remains, although it’s surely not the focus, instead giving way to a sake collection that includes over 100 different selections, a list that will continue to grow in coming months as management has vowed to house the largest sake collection on the Strip. It’s not all sake though, as the Social House Specialty Cocktail list also contains some real gems. We wanted an expert opinion on some of the cocktails so we invited acclaimed Master Mixologist Tony Abou Ganim to join us for some sampling, and wow does he know his stuff. Make sure to try the ‘Tequila Moon’ which is particularly fantastic since watermelon is currently in season, the Ginger Saketini is a unique, creative and original cocktail that is sure to thrill. Rounding out the top three was the Lycheetini, a lychee inspired delight. After dinner you also have to try the infused sakes… the watermelon flavor stood out for us, confirming Abou Ganim’s comment about the current freshness of watermelon.
If you’re wondering what a nightlife company knows about operating a restaurant, ask the experienced and knowledgeable operators hired on by PMG like Wyn Pearson, former F&B director at Bellagio, and Mark Steele, former assistant GM at FIX (also at Bellagio). Add in Greg J’s past life as a restaurant operator and all the tools are in place to ensure great service is a regular part of any Social House meal. The wait staff compiled at Social House might look familiar as many faces from other happening restaurant ventures have joined on for the Social experience, including Matt, our formerly favorite waiter from Simon Kitchen & Bar (Hard Rock Hotel).
It’s no wonder Social House has already caught on as a hot-spot for both locals who might hold untraditional dining hours and sushi fans looking for a cool and fun environment. Look for things to heat up even more at the end of the month when The MAIN Event returns to kick-off Open House, a new weekly Thursday promotion that will offer industry specials and provide locals with yet another Northern Strip party destination. Look for The MAIN Event and Open House to take stage on Thursday, September 28th. In the meantime, feel free to stop by and get social, you’ll thank us.

The Bay Area Reporter, a San Francisco media outlet directed at our gay and lesbian friends, ran an interesting story this weekend with the headline, ‘Las Vegas Bets on Gay Visitors.’ Author Ed Walsh starts by noting that although somewhat underground, Sin City has long been a favorite destination for gay travelers. The story added that increased marketing presence toward the gay community through focused brochures from the Las Vegas Convention Visitors Authority and upcoming campaigns from both MGM Mirage and Harrah’s Entertainment. With the city’s first alternative lifestyle nightclub, Krave, set to celebrate its two year anniversary, and the so-called “Fruit Loop” as busy as ever, it would seem as though Walsh is on to something. Interestingly, the story also seemingly confirmed what we had been hearing for over a year now, that Harrah’s Entertainment has definite plans to increase marketing of Paris Las Vegas to the gay community. Already “gay getaway packages” include admission to Krave Nightclub, a short walk away, and the option of a same-sex marriage ceremony, something that MGM Mirage will also accommodate. Other shows and restaurants that were highlighted include Burger Bar (Mandalay Bay), Nob Hill (MGM Grand), Elton John’s Red Piano (Caesars Palace) and of course, Frank Marino’s An Evening at La Cage (Riveria).
Turning Triq
Forget pulling a rabbit out of his hat, magician Steve Wyrick has a bigger trick on the horizon. In November, he will be opening a brand new entertainment complex in the Miracle Mile Mall (Desert Passage Mall) at the Aladdin (Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino) that will offer 33,000 square feet of fun with a brand new four-story showroom and nightlife driven ultra lounge. The concept will allow patrons to see a show, hang out in the lounge, grab a bite to eat or party it up bottle service style. First the showroom, Wyrick will be the headliner in his showroom with two shows nightly, but he won’t be alone as a major Filipino artist has signed on for a nightly show as well as a successful and unique off-Broadway concept that puts the caveman on center stage once Wyrick is done. Also signed on in the showroom is Ron Lucas, the former Rio daytime entertainer that has clearly been one of the most successful afternoon shows in recent history. The lounge will be open during the day to offer Lucas’ fans a place to relax and enjoy a cocktail either before or after the show. The complex will also include a small food-driven outlet that will capitalize on concession sales to all of the complex’s customers.
Once the sun goes down, Triq will focus on providing an alternative to Strip nightlife with an amazing venue and a clear-cut focus on customer service. Heading up nightlife at Triq will be tried and true nightlife pioneer Tony Verdugo who needs no more credentials after you mention he started the most successful after-hours party in the country at Drai’s over eight years ago. Verdugo, who is serving as director of nNightlife, is focusing on customer service by, “treating regular Joe’s like VIPs and VIPs like gods!” There will be no cover for locals, discounted bottle prices for industry locals and even the soon-to-die-for ‘Too Hot to Pay’ cards for the clubs most beautiful female patrons which will exclude them from paying for anything, ever. “Some clubs open with a promise to take care of the locals but change their tune after they become successful, that will not be us,” Verdugo notes with conviction.
Steak Out
Next month, on Thursday, November 16th, the 3rd annual Great Las Vegas Steakout will return to Las Vegas pairing some of Sin City’s best steakhouses with of the planets greatest and most respected wineries. Each steakhouse joins forces with a winery to create the perfect evening of thick, succulent cuts of meat and expertly paired wines. Each pair also works together to create a specialized menu playing up to the strengths between the combination of the wine and the food. Already thirteen wineries and restaurants have enlisted into the Great Steakout making this the biggest year yet. The tantalizing match-ups include: The Palm Restaurant (Forum Shops) and Duckhorn Vineyards, ENVY Steakhouse (Renaissance Hotel) and the ultra-phenomenal Reynolds Family Winery, Andre’s French Restaurant (6th Street) and Ridge Vineyards, The Capital Grille (Fashion Show Mall) and Joseph Phelps Winery and Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse and Silver Oak Winery. Look for more detailed menus and pairings in weeks to come.

John Katsilometes passes sage advice from Danny Gans along to fellow impressionist Gordie Brown, playing across the street at Venetian
Danny Gans can do a pretty good impression of a show producer.
The longtime Mirage headliner, who recently celebrated 10 years in Las Vegas, contacted us Monday afternoon in response to a question we posed last week about Gordie Brown.
Brown has set up across the street from Gans at the Venetian. Brown’s show of comic impressions, which has been compared to Gans’, opened last week in a new 800-seat theater.
In a message forwarded by his manager, Melanie VanBurch, Gans wrote: “My advice to Gordie is to do something unique and different that the Strip has never seen before. For example, while doing his trademark Garry Shandling impression, have a sad clown walk by while three midgets on pogo sticks juggle pink French poodles on a high wire.
“I’d also change the name of his show to Cirque du Gordie.”
