Rumors About Prince
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Earlier this week, Harrah’s wouldn’t go on the record about Prince. The legalities of getting signatures on a contract have apparently dragged on and on.
Nonetheless, the decision to use Club Rio instead of, say, the bigger Penn & Teller theater is starting to make more sense in light of what Thompson was told, as well as the Prince shows at the Rio and Empire Ballroom last Memorial Day weekend.
Prince probably won’t guarantee performances and so won’t follow the casino model of Elton John or Barry Manilow. Instead, it sounds like he will lease the room and possibly the adjacent Fiore Steakhouse, rebranding them with a name such as Club 3121.
On nights the Purple One performs there himself, admission will be upward of $120. But when Prince is on tour or otherwise indisposed, proteges such as singer Tamar or acts within the extended family — such as Morris Day & The Time — will fetch a $31.21 ticket.
Negotiations for a similar deal were made public this summer by the operator of the Empire Ballroom, a free-standing nightclub on the Strip. Talks didn’t go beyond the Prince shows there May 27 and 28. Those shows came the night after Prince teamed with Day at Club Rio.
He was said to have liked the purple color scheme.
Turning the entire room over to Prince will help the Rio sidestep any content issues. The Memorial Day shows were typical of Prince sets in small venues: light on hits, heavy on extended jamming.
While longtime fans will swoon for such workouts in a cozy setting, there’s the issue of how well it will translate to casino tourists who expect concise showcases of hits, a la John’s “Red Piano” shows.

Closing Time
Opened in 1958, the Stardust will close with Steve and Eydie
By Mike Weatherford
“We’re starting to take this a little personally,” says Steve Lawrence. “We’re not going to hold the last note too long because I believe the wrecking ball’s in the parking lot.”
Lawrence and singing spouse Eydie Gorme have the honor of bringing down the curtain on the Stardust Theater today and Saturday. Mostly by coincidence, they also were the last act to perform in the Circus Maximus showroom at Caesars Palace in September 2000.
“We have a plaque now: ‘Book Steve & Eydie. They’re dynamite,’ ” Lawrence quips.
The venerable couple brings the right touch of old-Vegas class to the bittersweet occasion. The long-married crooners first started working the Strip in 1957, a year before the Stardust opened on July 2, 1958. But they never performed at the Stardust until 2004. And the theater had a very short resume until 2000, with only two shows on its stage in all the years before then.

Some weeks are slammed, others slow, and as he said Monday “The good teams are a lot better than the bad teams this year.”

Speaking of rumors that have been around for a while, this one has singer and actress Jessica Simpson opening a chain of restaurants called Daisy Duke’s, inspired by the Dukes of Hazard character she played in last years remake of the cult television show. The now well-established tradition of Gary Ellis’homemade egg nog continues, with Ellis Island brewing early this year, due, apparently, to popular demand. For a limited time only, Fiamma Trattoria at MGM Grand will be offering a $70 baked potato side dish. No ordinary spud, the Yukon Gold White Truffle Potato consists of the largest potato money can buy, simply seasoned with salt, pepper, and olive oil, then wrapped in foil and baked. So far, so what? Well, once its been baked to perfection, the fluffy stuff is removed from the crispy skin, folded with bacon, sour cream, imported Parmigiano-Reggiano, and two grams of fresh Alba truffles from Italy. After the warm concoction has been mixed together, it’s placed back in its skin and topped with an additonal seven grams of shaved Alba white truffles, just for the heck of it. Not recommended for anyone on the Atkins diet.

NORM: Bunnies getting lots of attention.
Bunny mania is raging again, decades after the downfall of Hugh Hefner’s 30-club rabbit-eared empire.
Two weeks after the opening of the first Playboy Club in 25 years, cottontail fever is still running rampant.
“People are offering to buy our Bunny ears, cuff links and tails. Even our name tags are being stolen off the (gaming) tables,” said Heidi Wheeler, a Bunny-dealer at the new Playboy Club near the top of the Palms’ new Fantasy Tower.
“I’ve had guys pull my tail off and run for the elevator,” said Maya Kilam, like Wheeler, one of 25 dealers who wear the retro black-and-white Bunny outfits.
“I’ve been offered $100 for my ears,” Wheeler added.
“We’ve had ladies ask whether they could buy the outfits,” said Sharla Jensen, a cocktail Bunny.
An employee at the Palms was offered $1,000 for a Playboy key that was sent to VIP invitees for opening night.
April Rawlings, another Bunny cocktail server, can vouch that the allure of the Bunny mystique is alive and well.
The dark-haired stunner, who came to Las Vegas from Chicago with a degree in theoretical science and landscape architecture, has been offered trips to New York and Los Angeles by smitten customers.
Not to mention a full-court press from a randy-andy young tennis star who made it clear he was very single.
Some of the Bunnies weren’t prepared for the frenzy of attention.
“We were grabbed and groped all night (on opening night),” said one, who asked that her name not be used.
“We should put squeaky toys in our tails just to shock people,” added Jensen, who was a bathtub model at Tao Las Vegas before becoming a Bunny.
Said Wheeler: “One of the first things they had us all say out loud at our first meeting was, ‘I am a celebrity.’ We didn’t believe it, but … it’s such a big deal!”

‘EROCKTICA’ SHOCKER
In a move that clears the way for Prince to take over the former Club Rio space, the cast of “Erocktica” has been given notice that the topless revue is closing Monday “until further notice,” a Rio rep confirms.
Reached by telephone Saturday, Gabriella Versace, the show’s lead, said the two-day notice was passed down to the nine-member cast Friday.
“We’re heartbroken,” said Versace, a former Miss Pennsylvania who adopted a stage name.
“We had heard the rumors, but sometimes they’re just rumors. It’s sad because it seems like revues have become passe. They’re closing left and right,” she added.
The Rio show opened in February 2005.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Shows return downtown.
Fremont Street is a road full of mixed signals, a lot like the guy by a pawnshop down there who hit me up for change while carrying a Starbucks cup.
You don’t know what’s inside the cup, but it looks better than a brown paper bag.
So does the fact that ticketed entertainment has multiplied on the street of missed opportunities.
The Golden Nugget, traditionally the flagship of Fremont Street, invested in a new theater and two shows, “Simply Ballroom” and “Cover Girls,” as part of a larger overhaul of the casino.
And the Plaza again dusts off its vintage showroom, this time for the quirky, retro-’60s dance revue, “Shag With a Twist.”

NORM: Prince might try to rein in Sin City
The rumored arrival of Prince as a nightclub operator at the Rio is raising questions: How far he will take his spirituality in free-wheeling Las Vegas?
As a Jehovah’s Witness convert, would he continue his door-to-door conversion efforts in Sin City?
There are rumblings that he intends to charge $31.21 for admission on most nights. Is that a coincidence or, as some suggest, a biblical reference? His most recent album, released in March, was titled “3121.”
The four-time Grammy winner reportedly has finalized a deal to open a nightclub in the Rio’s former Club Rio space.
When he’s not performing at the club, still-unnamed, Prince reportedly plans to use the club to showcase artists he has signed to a label.
The only information on his new Web site, 3121.com is a graphic showing the silhouette of the Rio.
The irony is not lost on producer Greg Thompson, whose topless revue “Erocktica,” was given two-days notice Friday. The show closed Sunday.
“I find it kind of interesting that Jehovah has come to Las Vegas to cleanse Sin City of sex, sweat and rock ‘n’ roll,” he said, a reference to a line used in ads to market “Erocktika.”
CBS reportedly has signed Prince to perform at the 2007 Super Bowl in Miami.

NORM: Michael’s headed down the Strip
Michael’s Restaurant, a fine dining magnet at the Barbary Coast since 1981, is moving to the south end of the Strip.
Michael Gaughan, who today assumes ownership of the South Coast from Boyd Gaming and renamed it South Point, said Tuesday he envisions the move taking place by April or May.
The new Michael’s will be almost a carbon copy of the current eatery, which is known for it’s celebrity clientele and top-end menu prices.
“We’ll still have 12 booths, four tables in the middle of the room and a party room in the back,” he said, adding that the building plans will go to the county for approval next week.
Gaughan said he insisted on keeping the toney restaurant as part of his sale of the Barbary Coast to Harrah’s.
He’s taking the restaurant staff with him.
“Everybody goes, even the busboys,” he said.
Michael’s will remain open until the move, he said.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Comedy Festival makes edgy additions to lineup
Sarah Silverman, raunchy puppets and the finals of an Internet comedy contest are among the latecomers to the schedule for The Comedy Festival at Caesars Palace Nov. 15-18.
Silverman will perform with “Magical Friends Wierdo and Beardo” (Brian Posehn and Zach Galifianakis) on Nov. 18. The Nov. 15 “Puppet Up!” offers adults-only improv comedy with puppets from the Jim Henson Company. Seems only fair for the Henson folk to strike back at “Avenue Q,” which parodied “Sesame Street.”
George Lopez will host the “Stand Up or Sit Down Comedy Challenge” on Nov. 15. The finals of a MySpace competition will be shown on TBS the next day. “Viral Videos Live!” on Nov. 17 will invite stars of frequently downloaded videos to perform live.

SENIOR DREAMS
It used to be said that men age gracefully, get better looking as they get older. Not women, or so we heard. But that hardly seems to be the case today and if you don’t believe me, drop in on the 26th Annual Ms. Senior America Pageant Nov. 7-11 at the Imperial Palace. You may even want to enter. Of course, you will have to have beauty, brains and talent and be at least 60 years old.
Now if you think you’re going to see women strutting the stage in thong bikinis, forget it, but if you want to see women who best exemplify the dignity, maturity and poise of the “age of elegance” this is the ticket. Each of the contestants will be judged in four categories: interview, philosophy of life, evening gown and talent.
The contestant crowned Ms. Senior America receives “Elegant Queen,” a lifetime keepsake glass vase sculpted especially for the pageant by Valentine. In addition, she and the four runners-up will make personal appearances throughout the year on behalf of the pageant and its sponsors.
If you want to attend, you can buy tickets to four pageant events, each being held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the IP’s Imperial Theatre: the talent showcase Wednesday, Nov. 8, first preliminary judging Thursday, Nov. 9, second preliminary judging Friday, Nov. 10, and the national finals Saturday, Nov. 11. Each event ticket is $25 and you can get them at the IP’s Show and Tour Desk or by calling 888-777-7664.

BLACKJACK ON BOULDER
If you’re a blackjack player, you might want to take a run over to Arizona Charlie’s on Boulder Highway. The casino is having weekly blackjack tournaments on Thursdays with added money known as the “Winner’s Rollover Purse,” which, according to casino execs, gives the casino player and tournament player more value for their tournament dollar. Nice to hear, but we’ll be the judge of that.
Here’s how it works. Each week Arizona Charlie’s Boulder will add $100 to the “Winner’s Rollover Purse.” Players must qualify through play on their Ultimate Rewards Club card in order to be eligible to win the Purse. Players will be able to qualify each Thursday by playing slots and earning a minimum of 100 Action Cash points or live blackjack for two hours at a $5 minimum bet.
Once the player is qualified, they will be eligible to win the “Winner’s Rollover Purse.” That means if they win the tournament, they will win both the daily purse and the “Winner’s Rollover Purse.” If the winner does not qualify for the Purse, the $100 rolls over until the next week. As each week progresses the “Winner’s Rollover Purse” will continue to grow until a tournament player qualifies and wins.
Each weekly tournament is limited to 54 entrants (including re-buys) with a maximum of six entrants per table. The tournament will be a three round format: Qualifying Round, Semi-Final Round and Final Round.
Registration takes place at 5 p.m. every Thursday at the cashier’s cage. The first turn of the cards begins at 6 p.m. Buy-ins and re-buys are $25 and all monies collected from tournament players will be distributed daily. You can get all the details at the table games pit.

NORM: Ice melts down with hot party
Ice, an off-Strip nightclub that was popularized in the reality show “The Club,” is closing down on a high note.
“It’s going to be a celebration, not a funeral,” said Brian Klimaski, director of VIP services.
The farewell party starts at 4 a.m. Sunday and runs until noon, or until the booze runs out.
Three years and two months after opening in the former Drink and Eat Too space, Ice has “run its course,” Klimaski said.
“It’s always been an uphill battle, and we had to wind down because the lease is up in March,” he added.
Ice staffers will leave with a lot of cool memories.
There was the night — well, morning — that massive NFL partyhound Ross Verba decided the party wasn’t over yet.
“Tiesto, who was the No. 1 deejay in the world at the time, was playing, and $10,000 in cash came raining down in the deejay booth, and we went another 90 minutes until 10 a.m.,” Klimaski said.
On another night, Sean “P Diddy” Combs “ran up a $150,000 tab — drank us out of every bottle of champagne we had,” Klimaski said.
The 2004 airing of “The Club” in the U.S. and Canada provided a jolt of extra business, but it wasn’t enough to survive against the megaclubs.

Harrah’s paid premium for Barbary Coast land
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
To acquire the Barbary Coast, Harrah’s Entertainment sent the value of Strip land skyrocketing.
The casino operator is paying what amounts to $84.8 million an acre to pick up the 4.3 acre site at the corner of the Strip and Flamingo Road, the last piece of a 350-acre land parcel. Much of the land is contiguous along the east side of the Strip.
In a straight land swap announced Oct. 2, Harrah’s is trading 24 acres located next to the Stardust to Boyd Gaming Corp. for the Barbary Coast in a deal expected to close by February.

SHOW REVIEW: Jeff Trachta
Getting a Foot in the Door: Jeff Trachta is off to a modest start at the Rio. By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
If there’s a checklist for putting on an old-school, one-man variety show, Jeff Trachta remembered just about everything.
Comic impressions? Check. Dramatic singing? Autobiographical anecdotes? Funny drag? Yes, yep and yessirree.
The only thing he forgot was, “Making it look easy (except for when the audience is supposed to notice how hard you’re working).”
Trachta is an unknown to a lot of us, but hugely popular to those who know him from his long-running role as Thorne on the CBS soap “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Even that small niche of fame is more than Danny Gans or Clint Holmes had before they became stars on the Strip, proving strong word of mouth can compensate for recognition.

“Ka”
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
“Ka,” the grandiose production by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand, has evolved into a much more coherent and interesting story since its debut almost two years ago.
While most Cirque shows focus on athletes performing artistically in a variety of circumstances, “Ka” takes a different tack. It has a story line - one that was almost overwhelmed by the magnificent machinery and special effects in the earlier versions of the production. The story is told without words and initially was difficult to follow.
But with some tweaking, the creators now have a show whose story can be followed with ease and fans can better appreciate the drama and the humor that infuses the production. “Ka’s” athleticism and stunning stagecraft are put to good use, creating breathtaking battle scenes as well as intriguing scenes involving puppetry and martial arts.
While the production itself is enjoyable, experiencing the $135 million theater, which has been described by some as resembling a space ship and by others as a cathedral, is almost worth the price of admission.
The production recently gained national exposure when it played an important part in the plot of the hit TV series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
Showtimes are 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Tickets range from $99 to $150.

Liza without the zzzzzz’s
By Jerry Fink/Las Vegas Sun
There were no zzzzzzzzz’s sawed at Liza Minnelli’s recent concert at the Luxor - part of the venue’s “Spotlight Series” (a brilliant idea).
The chanteuse of New York kept her fans enraptured throughout the evening - from the opening number, “I Can See Clearly Now,” to the closing standing ovations that kept drawing her back into the spotlight, where she belongs.
She sang the songs that have endeared her to the public - “Cabaret,” “On a Clear Day,” “New York, New York” - and a few that were surprises, including a funny tribute number to Sara Lee, the pastry manufacturer.
“A fan brought me a Sara Lee cheesecake before one show,” Minnelli, who has been dieting, said. “I’ve been married four times, and I’ve never enjoyed anything as much as I enjoyed that cheesecake.”
Minnelli - a little flighty - giggled, occasionally cursed, talked a bit (a very little bit) about her famous mother (Judy Garland) and father (film director Vincente Minnelli) and generally mesmerized everyone as she chatted away, dropping famous names and talking about her show business career and the films and stage productions in which she has starred.
Those who didn’t get to attend one of her recent performances have a second chance. She returns to the Luxor on Nov. 23-25.

White Glove Service
How do you improve on Tao Nightclub? Seriously, the Asian-inspired hotspot has proven that it has earned its spot among Las Vegas’ nightlife elite by blending top-rate service standards and specialized events with a one-of-a-kind experience that just got better. “We are introducing personalized butler service to Tao Las Vegas,” stated a proud Jason Strauss, managing partner of the nightclub at Tao. “We have always prided ourselves on providing our guests with an amazing experience, and our new ‘white glove service’ is an amenity that really raises the bar.” Yup, you read that right, butler service is no longer restricted to the private villas and high roller suites that dot The Strip as it is now being introduced into the nightclub environment. Say, for example, you get a dance floor table but some guests are arriving late, instead of delaying the party coordinating entry directions, you just give them the personal telephone number of your butler who will greet them at the door and escort them to your table. Need cigarettes? Want a burger after the restaurant closes? Something from the gift shop? Something from your hotel room? Your butler has you covered. Say a female guest needs to use the restroom, the butler will escort her through the packed club and to the front of the line. “We are always looking for new ways to elevate and evolve our brand and the Tao experience,” Strauss continued, “Service is always the biggest priority in Las Vegas and our new butler service will enable us to take care of our customers even better!” The charge for the service is a simple line item charge of a couple hundred dollars, which includes gratuity for the butler. In a city where everything and anything is possible, Tao has found an intriguing way to improve on bottle service and ensure, whatever your request, whatever your need, Tao has you covered.
New Years Plans Heat Up
We had been hearing some pretty serious rumors coming out of Fremont Street lately regarding plans for larger than life New Years Eve party that is in the works. While no one would comment publicly, it would seem as though Direct TV, the Fremont Street Experience, and the Las Vegas Convention Visitors Authority have teamed up to produce a 4.5 televised celebration from right under the canopy that also doubles as the world’s largest LED screen. Last time we were downtown we spotted the ONE Global brain trust of Lia Rispoli and Marc Jay dining with Fremont Street honcho Jeff Victor so it certainly seems indicative of why the event has grown so much over even the previous year. The whispers we overheard include some serious heavyweight talent which would make sense since the LVCVA will be lending the ‘America’s party’ name to the downtown event that is expecting to draw close to 20,000 revelers. Stay tuned for more info to follow.
Cursed Joint
This past weekend marked the inaugural performance of Dee Snider’s Halloween tour, Van Helsing’s Curse, at the Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. This macabre rock symphony usually hits the road during the month of October. It tours America with an intimate gothic rock orchestra, complete with choreographed Viper (a streamlined electric violin) section, Druid choir and spooky story narrated by the Twisted Sister himself. This year Van Helsing’s Curse decided to make the Joint its haunted home, with plans to return every October and to franchise other venues with other casts, nationwide. A Friday and Saturday show brought crowds ready to rock and be terrified, they were most certainly not let down. The show was extraordinarily entertaining and visually unbelievable. Dee Snider brought some very talented musicians to this production. It was evident that the band was consumed with telling the ghoulish tale through their instruments and voices. They continued to bring the haunted house down with everything from rocking renditions of classical standards to a freaked-out version of the Munster’s theme to a well-placed version of “Cry Little Sister,” Gerard McMann’s smash hit from the Lost Boys soundtrack, with Snider on vocals. Verrrrrrry cool. The music was loud and amazing and everything looked even cooler. The Joint was decked out haunted house style and the cast was impeccably dressed and made up to look ultra scary. Suzette Snider kicked ass with costumes and make up. The entire ensemble jived and jinxed with the Alice-Cooper-haired, Mark Wood on Viper, going insane, and the awesome chick guitar player, whose name I only caught as “Dolly Dagger”, stealing the show with her energy and flow. It was a lot of fun. Too bad if you missed it…it won’t return until next year. And, as a warning, those of us who were privileged enough to see the show joined forces and put a curse on all of you that didn’t come. Be careful going home tonight.

Halloween haunts the City of Sin
By Jack Houston/Las Vegas Magazine
Witch or warlock, Frankenstein or Bride of Frankenstein, there’s a little something for everyone in Las Vegas this Halloween season. As the countdown to the year’s most haunted holiday winds down, it’s your turn to get in on the action. Whether you like to be scared, or just like to watch other people turn all pale and wide-eyed (nothing can get a rise out of you, right?), your frightful fantasies will be fulfilled … if you dare.
When the lights go out at Adventuredome, the night unfurls into a harem of chain-saw-wielding madmen, decomposing zombies and human freak shows. Every Thursday through Sunday until Halloween, the theme park at Circus Circus becomes Fright Dome, featuring five haunted houses, four extreme scare zones and 20 rides and attractions. Circus Circus, 7 p.m.-midnight Thurs.-Sun., $29.95 single-day ticket, $41.95 fast pass, (702) 794-3939
Johnny always wanted to become a rock star, but he never knew just what steps he would have to take to make his dream come true. After inheriting a haunted house, he sells his soul to a monster for the necessary skills and spookiness ensues. Follow him down creepy corridors and scary staircases as he uncovers mysteries in The Haunted Castle IMAX ride. Luxor, 10 p.m. daily, $11.99, (702) 262-4400
According to the Haunted Vegas Tour & Show, the apparitions of many celebrities have been sighted around the Las Vegas Valley for years. There’s no guarantee you’ll catch Elvis at his old haunting ground, but this tour of local paranormal sites just might make a believer out of you. Greek Isles, 9 p.m. Sat.-Thurs., $46.25-$57.25, (702) 737-5540
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Freakling Bros. has resurrected one of their most famous haunted houses. The Circus of Horrors first frightened Las Vegas in 1992. Newly reanimated, the Circus is back and ready to scare. Sunset Station, 7-11 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 7 p.m.-midnight Fri.-Sat., $11, $5 bounce back, $25 freak pass, (702) 362-3327
It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a haunted village to raise the dead at Monster Mayhem’s Haunted Village. Seven haunted houses have been erected just south of the Strip, turning the perennially lucky number unlucky. Located at Las Vegas Boulevard South and Interstate 215 (across from Fry’s Electronics). Open 7 p.m.-midnight daily (dark Oct. 23). Tickets are $23, available online at monstermayhem.net or at the box office.
Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface all take part in Chamber of Horrors Live, the new interactive installation at Madame Tussauds. Part museum, part haunted house, part theatrical performance and part maze, the exhibit winds visitors through each of the slayers’ haunts. Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Venetian, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Sun.-Thurs., 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.-Sat., admission to the exhibit is included with museum admission, (702) 862-7800
After Steve & Eydie leave the stage, the freaks come out at the 11th annual Fetish & Fantasy Ball—the last hurrah for the famed Stardust hotel and casino. The bizarre and the abnormal will be on full display with erotic stage shows, fire performers, a costume contest and live music and DJs. Costumes are mandatory and expecting the unexpected is required. Stardust, 10 p.m.-4 a.m. Oct. 28, $75 general admission, $38 late admission, $195 super VIP, 21+, (702) 474-4000 Ticketmaster
Even the water is haunted this Halloween. For one day, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay becomes Haunted Reef. Children under 12 dressed in costume receive free admission, and candy will be passed out throughout the aquarium. Also, that shark in a pirate’s costume? So scary. Mandalay Bay, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Oct. 28, $15.95 adults, (702) 632-7777

Celebrate Halloween with Casino Chips
Sale of Limited Edition Tokens Begins Friday at Imperial Palace.
A headless horseman holding a jackolantern buys $5 of table action at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino.
That’s because it’s one of the designs on new casino chips immortalizing “Happy Halloween 2006.” The limited edition special celebration chips will be issued Friday, Oct. 27.
The gaming tokens will be available at 11 a.m. at one window at the casino cage. Only 500 $5 and 100 $25 chips have been commissioned. On the day of issue, purchasers may buy only five $5 and two $25 chips per visit to the cage window.
The flip side of the $5 chip shows a bat illuminated by a full moon. The $25 chip shows skeleton hands emerging from a grave marked with a headstone that reads “VIP.” Its flip side also is distinguished by the creepy graveyard character, bats and a moon.
Based on the popularity of casino chip collecting, the Imperial Palace anticipates issuing additional limited edition casino chips this year to celebrate Thanksgiving, the 25th anniversary of The Auto Collections and 2007.
RIVIERA SECURITY PATCH COLLECTION PROVIDES UNIQUE PHOTO OP
Whether big or small, there are hundreds of photo ops (opportunities) available around every corner in Las Vegas. The Mirage has its volcano; Caesars and the Bellagio have dancing fountains; and even the Riviera Hotel and Casino boasts its famous backside bronze “Crazy Girls” statue, alongside the “La Cage” glass mannequin display on The Strip. All of these, and more attractions, provide unique backdrops for souvenir photos.
On a much smaller scale, but just as meaningful to the visitor from Oshkosh, Akron, Fort Lee, New Jersey, or Watertown, New York, are the hundreds of police badges displayed at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. Word is out you can also snap a photograph of yourself pointing to police badges from your home state, and in some cases, your hometown, another “only in Vegas-type” souvenir.
Riviera Security Officer and Armorer* Walt Dickerson had no idea when he was hired in 1988, one day he’d be head caretaker of the Riviera’s Police Patch Exhibit, displayed on the walls near the Riviera’s World’s Fare Buffet entrance. The rare photo opportunity had been a well-kept secret, up until now.
From Butte, Montana, Officer Dickerson explained, “One afternoon in 1996, a French emblem from the Paris Police appeared on my desk. I pinned it to an 8′x 4′ plywood board on my office wall and thought little more about it. Other team members noticed the colorful fabric alone and little by little, the patches started steamrolling in and the board was becoming quite full.
“We had to move the board outside and enclosed it in a locked case. If there were police conventions or Police Olympics at the Riv or just in town, men and women would drop off patches from where they were from. I was always adding patches, arranging them alphabetically or by putting them in geographical regions.”
“Presently we have 505 badges. Most are from California, Michigan and Florida. We have none, for some odd reason, from North or South Dakota. We have about 50 from all over the world. They are over-crowding two cases and a third case will be needed soon.
“Most every day, you can find visitors staring intensely at the display, trying to find their hometown patch. When they find it, it’s like the same person had directed them all, they point to the emblem and snap a lot of pictures.
“We even trade our Riviera patches with visiting officers. There is no end to this. It’s a great exhibit. We are proud it’s here,” Dickerson concluded.
You can bring your camera and visit the Riviera Hotel and Casino Security Patch Display, 24/7, at 2901 Las Vegas Boulevard South. The Riviera is at (702) 734-5110, or click on www.rivierahotel.com

STRIPSTEAK OPENS
By Norm Johnson
Went to another party at Mandalay Bay the other evening for the Grand Opening of acclaimed Chef Michael Mina’s newest endeavor, StripSteak - his first steakhouse. Just about everyone, who is anyone was there during its opening. There was of course the tasting of the food which was nothing to sneeze at. If the tasting were anything like what you can expect when you sit down to have a dinner, then you are in for a very special treat. The restaurant offers modern American fare with a focus on all-natural Certified Angus Beef and American Kobe cuts of beef cooked over mesquite wood. Other specialties include slow poached prime rib cooked in its own juices for 12 hours; American Kobe beef short ribs, and wood-grilled Maine Lobster with truffled pearl pasta and cipolini onions.
StripSteak offers more than 600 wine selections with a definite focus on American wines - which we had a nice sampling of by the way. The décor is as modern as you can get with a highly polished appearance. Designed by Super Potato of Japan who chose a more refined aesthetic by balancing raw industrial materials - steel, fiberglass and roughhewn teak - with clean, fluid lines and rich hues such as plum and garnet. There is a wonderful lounge (it accommodates 70) with plush seating and the dining area is unbelievably comfort plus (seating 140). StripSteak opens nightly at 5:30 p.m., with the lounge opening at 4 p.m.

Just for laughs, I checked out a few comics who are performing in Vegas, or soon will be.
I experienced a wide range of humor: earthy Vinnie Favorito, family-friendly “Redneck Comedy Live!” and hilarious stand-up comic Craig Ferguson.

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer
From Accessvegas.com
Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.
More Poker PeopleIt’s the best game in town (Las Vegas). There’s Yukon Don and Muscle Mike. Dennis the Greek Menace, Hollywood, Big Harold and Little Harold, Ray the Pro, Darling Dolores, Sensuous Sabrina, Real Estate Dan, Jose the Nugget, Buffalo Bob, Booker, Quiet Ken, and a man who asked me not to mention his name in print but whose name is the same as that computer in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. And, of course, then there are Aris the Greek and Harry (who doesn’t have a nickname I know of). And then there’s I - they call me Vegas Vic.
The game is Texas Hold ‘Em - most of the time. Usually 1-4-8 and often 1-4-8-8. Sometimes Seven Stud, and even Omaha High. The place is Arizona Charlie’s, and all these people once could be found there most mornings from about 9 a.m., and often till late at night (or very early, depending on which way you look at it).
These, and many others, are among the nicest poker people I have met in many years. They all usednto play regularly in this little two-table poker room. The game was terrific, with many large pots even for a small-limit game. But the best thing about this game was the poker camaraderie enjoyed by all these regular players, and their welcoming attitude to new players. I know. I was such a new player not so long ago.
This was many years ago now. One very early morning I won some money in video poker, and as the dawn was breaking I thought it was about time I went home. As I was getting up from my seat at the machine, I noticed the poker game in progress. As I stood there on the rail, watching, a man called out: “Come on in! Seat open.” Well, it was such a nice and welcoming invitation that I decided to take him up on the offer.
Although it was still very early, the game was in full swing, with only two other seats empty. So, I sat down and bought in for a rack. The game was Hold ‘Em $1-$4-$8 on the end. I sat there for the rest of the day, enjoying this game and the people who played it. They all seemed to know each other, judging from their conversations and the fact that each new player coming in also seemed to know the other player’s names, and they knew his. And so I became part of this group of poker people.
After several weeks, they got to know me as well - and I got to know them. Soon, I was able to recognize their faces and knew their names. It became a kind of poker family for me. Yes, they all play tough poker. This is not a child’s game and it isn’t a “home” game. These players are there to win. But that doesn’t mean that they aren’t helpful. When asked, they will explain aspects of the game, and they will also comment on errors, be they by the dealer, or by some new player (and they also helped me with my game as well).
Sometimes they even offer advice on poker protocol, and the correct way to conduct yourself at the game. None of these people are “saints” when it come to the game of poker, but they are sufficiently knowledgeable and sufficiently comfortable in their own skills that they are willing to “look after” a new player, or a player who can use some help. I was fortunate to play in this game, and with these people. Their abilities have made it possible for me to learn many things.
It was Muscle Mike who game me my nickname. He christened me “Vegas Vic”. I guess it had something to do with the fact that at that particular time I actually won a pot. Mike is one of the dealers in this game, but he also plays in the game. In fact, all the dealers in this room play there as well. Booker plays there most of the time, but he also deals on weekends. Darling Dolores deals the swing shift, but she also often stays and plays for many hours more.
Dennis the Greek Menace is also one of the dealers who sits in the game as often as he can. But it was Muscle Mike who first noticed this new player - myself - and gave me my new name. In fact, there’s this neon cowboy in Downtown Las Vegas whose name is Vegas Vic. But Mike didn’t seem to know that and came up with the name all on his own. I’ve had some nicknames in my time, but this one I like. It’s kind of fitting, I think.
Muscle Mike is from New Jersey. He says he got his nickname because he used to be into physical culture and had some muscle on him. How, he points to the relocation of these muscles and laments that his nickname no longer seems as appropriate as in years past. I say don’t worry about it, Mike. You have all the poker muscle you need. Mike is a good player, and a good dealer.
Yukon Don is a character. He was in the movies in the 1950’s. He tells me that at one point he was to have a role opposite Tony Curtis, but in the end his movie role wound up on the cutting room floor. Oh well, I know how that feels. So, Yukon Don moved to Southern California and joined the Santa Monica Players, which was a theatrical troupe. As he tells it, it was party time all the time. He lived on the beach as a beach bum. Later, he says, he had enough of it and left that life (it took him five years - some party!).
Dennis and Aris. Both are Greeks, and both are fond of swearing at each other in Greek. Since none of us understands what it is that they are saying, we have to take their word for it when they say they were swearing at each other. However, I think that they are probably discussing Socrates, or perhaps the applied theory of Plato’s metaphysics, or perhaps the Aristotelian concept of transcendence of the soul, as derived from Plato. In any case, both are really nice people.
Aris is the poker room Manager, on the day shift. He takes over from Harry, who handles the graveyard players. And Dennis, well, we call him Dennis the Menace. He deals cards like that, and he also plays like that. He’s a very nice guy, and we all like him. Many times he took the trouble to look me up and offer kind words. All the rest of it is, well, good-natured ribbing and that’s all. In fact, that’s what makes this game so good - players who can talk the talk and do so without being mean. It’s rare in poker, but that’s how the game should be.
Little Harold in a kind gentlemen who looks like Spencer Tracy. Particularly in Tracy’s film “The Old Man and the Sea”. Harold looks just like him, and so everyone says. He’s called “little” Harold because there’s another player who name is also Harold. This second Harold is a very tall man, while the “Spencer Tracy” Harold is a smaller man. And so they are, respectively, Big Harold and Little Harold. Little Harold collects coupons, and all the players give them to him whenever they can. He’s a really nice man, and I like playing at the same table with him. Although he tends to wind up with my money more often than not, it’s still a pleasure to be at a game with him. And so it is, in fact, with all the other players as well.
Darling Dolores is a sweet lady who plays good poker. And she deals very well too. Ray is the resident poker professional. He certainly plays that way - professionally. He’s probably the best poker player at that game, and I don’t think anyone of these nice people would argue about that. Hollywood is a tall man from New York, who got his nickname because he once had a part in a movie with Robert De Niro called “Mean Streets” (I think that’s the name of the film, but I’m not sure).
Bob is a man who always has a smile on his face and is gracious in all hands. I call him Buffalo Bob simply because it seems to fit. He doesn’t have a nickname that I know of, so I just now gave him one. I hope he doesn’t mind. The same goes for Real Estate Dan. He’s another one of the friendly people in this game. I call him “Real Estate” because he always has a cellular phone with him and constantly answers calls about houses for sale. I think that’s his business, but it doesn’t matter. He’s a lively and animated player, and it’s always a pleasure to have him at the table.
Jose is one of the other interesting characters in this game. I call him “The Nugget”, because he always has this golden nugget with him which he uses to “lock” his down cards. It’s “fake gold”, but he also has a lot of golden jewelry on his person, and so it seemed appropriate to call him Jose the Nugget. I sat next to him many times, and his favorite phrase is “One time”, which he says each time he calls a bet.
I don’t know much about Quiet Ken. He doesn’t say much, although he did help me out one time with a mistake I made. I was grateful for that assistance. He plays there a lot and almost never speaks, so I call him Quite Ken. I think his real name is Kennely, but I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter. He plays a tight game, and is always a good person to have at the table.
And, finally, there’s the man who doesn’t want his name mentioned. His name is that of the computer in the that movie, so I’ll just call him Odie - short for Odyssey. His sister once wrote a Master’s Thesis on Poker, and he keeps promising to let us all read it, but we haven’t seen it yet. No matter. He’s a good player. In fact, I find it very hard to beat him in this game. I think that he “has my number”. I like Odie. He always has something interesting to say, mostly as he’s staking up racks and racks of chips. I enjoy his company, and I enjoy the game when he’s in.
Well, there’s the “family”. I thought I would be hard-pressed to find another group of people who were as nice as those people I wrote about in my first story: Poker People. But that’s the nature of Poker - you just never know when and where you will find new friends. These are all terrific people, and good poker players. And the game is great. Come and join us. Seat open.
