Everything Las Vegas Issue # 596

It’s hard to believe that it’s only 4 more issues to go until the 600th edition of Everything Las Vegas!

Who would have thought that since I started the newsletter in 1998 with less than 800 members that the newsletter would have it’s own website with almost 500,000 people reading the newsletter every month?

My next Las Vegas trip will be November 22-28th. Email me at mrvegas98@aol.com if you are interested in a possible members get together.

Playboy Club reclaims its place in the spotlight.
By Patrick Donnelly/Las Vegas Magazine
Las Vegas has often been described as an adult-oriented theme park, and in its heyday, the Playboy Club was the ultimate in adult entertainment. So it was probably only a matter of time before the two became one, as the Playboy Club opens Oct. 6 at the new Fantasy Tower at the Palms.

“The Playboy brand and lifestyle is a natural fit for Las Vegas,” said Christie Hefner, Playboy Enterprises chairwoman and CEO. “A Playboy entertainment venue at the Palms that integrates gaming, a club, food and beverage and merchandise is the next logical step in a market where 50 percent of revenue now comes from nongaming sources.”

The club is the first new venue for Playboy in 25 years, and represents a rebirth of sorts—the last of the original 30 Playboy Clubs was closed in 1988, marking the end of an era that began with the opening of the first club in Chicago in 1960. Membership quickly became a mark of status, as “keyholders” enjoyed unwinding with cocktails, mingling with the Bunnies and being entertained by some of the top singers and comedians of the day.

More than 1 million fun-seekers around the world became keyholders, identifying with the image of “the Playboy man,” the well-dressed high-roller, sipping a martini and discussing the latest trends in politics and pop culture, all the while surrounded, of course, by beautiful women. And through the ’60s and ’70s, such entertainers as Ray Charles, Ann-Margret, Milton Berle, Bill Cosby and Mel Torme were frequent guests and performers at the Playboy Club.

But in the mid ’80s, after expanding from big cities to midsize markets, Europe and Asia, Playboy decided to focus more on its core businesses and exited the nightclub scene. The Playboy Clubs in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York closed their doors in June 1986, and when the last Playboy Club, in Lansing, Mich., shut down in 1988, the original hipster haven seemed to be gone for good.

But the Playboy Club had spawned a movement, creating a demand for high-class nightclubs like the many found on the Las Vegas Strip. So when Playboy re-examined its business model and decided to get back behind the velvet ropes, one city was a natural place to start.

“The Playboy Clubs were among the most successful nightclubs in history, and we think this is a great time to reinvent the Playboy Club in the right city with the right partners,” Hefner said.

Along with the Playboy Club, other extraordinary venues opening this weekend in the Palms’ Fantasy Tower include Nove Italiano, a blend of both contemporary and traditional Italian food and décor; and Moon Nightclub, a venture from the indomitable N9ne group.

And so … the epic tail continues.

The magazine chose the Neon Boneyard’s Silver Slipper sign for Reba McEntire and the Plaza for LeAnn Rimes (who was decked out splendidly in a sequined showgirl costume and feathered headdress)

Well it looks like the penny slots are here to stay. According to an article in Gaming Today, slots accounted for over $118 in action for Las Vegas casinos in August 2006. This was a 37% increase over the same period in 2005. The penny machines took in more money than the nickel, quarter or dollar slots.

Steve Wynn’s right elbow has just cost him an estimated $90.6 million, on account of its unfortunate confrontation with the left forearm of Marie-Theresa Walter, the subject of Picasso’s Le Rêve painting. Wynn, a notorious gesticulator who also suffers from an eye disease that affects his peripheral vision, accidently took a swipe at the 74-year-old masterpiece while addressing a group that included Barbara Walters and screenwriters Nora Ephron and Nicholas Pileggi. “Oh sh*t, look what I’ve done,” was the reported response of the casino mogul and art-lover when he realized he’d made a sizeable hole in the canvas, which happens to be one of his favorites. Now, instead of following through with the recently-agreed $139 million sale of the work to another collector, Wynn is going to restore and keep the painting, for which he paid $48.4 million back in 1997. (To see the painting prior to its recent injury, check out the QoD archives for 03/30/2006, which features the Wynn art collection as the subject.)

According to the lastest Celebrity Week, the Palms is set to steal the mantle of “most expensive burger in town” from MBay’s Fleur de Lys restaurant. The “FleurBurger 5000,” a kobe beef and truffle extravaganza that’s complimented by a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1990 served in Ichendorf Brunello stemware, which is then shipped to your home, has for some time been the most expensive burger we’ve ever heard of anywhere. But the Maloofs (George, Joe, Gavin, and Phil) are apparently going to trump it with a $6,000 Carl’s Jr. hamburger, which will be available via room service and in the coffee shop. Like the FleurBurger, this sandwich will be served with a bottle of wine — in this case a 1982 Bordeaux. Since the burger joint has no franchise on property, Joe explained that “the Bellman is going to have to get in the Escalade and go down to Carl’s Jr.”

Comedian moves to new digs
By Paul Szydelko/Las Vegas Magazine
Rita Rudner
Where: Harrah’s
When: 8 p.m. Mon.-Sat.
Cost: $57.40
Info: (702) 492-3960 or (866) 80-SHOWS

After five years at a casino down the Strip, Rita Rudner has a new stage for her trenchant observations and hilarious outlook on life. Her soft voice and sharp wit move to Harrah’s this week.

“It’s a beautiful theater, and it’s a bigger theater, which I think will make my hips look smaller,” Rudner said.

Moving to Harrah’s was considerably easier than the drama played out in the pages of her fourth book, Turning the Tables, which was published this summer. The book satirizes life behind-the-scenes at a fictional casino called Heaven.

Her act continues to focus on everyday life and family. “The world is in such turmoil, and it’s so sad. That’s why they sell medicine for indigestion on the news, because after you hear the news, you just feel terrible. You have to take an antacid. So I stay away from politics and what’s going on in the world, because I find that’s too heavy for who I am.”

Elegant yet funny, with material that’s accessible yet quirky, Rudner is certain to coax more laughs from more audiences for many more years at Harrah’s.

One-stop shops for night owls’ carousal needs
By Justin Jimenez/Las Vegas Magazine
Any experienced partier will tell you: The key to the successful night out is the meal before. With evenings bleeding into the early morning being fueled by Grey Goose, you need an equalizer for the liquid stimulation. Now Vegas night owls have one-stop shops for all their carousal needs. Several late-night fun outlets offer a solution to the combo of eating and drinking, and everyone from A-list celebrities to hungry clubbers have taken notice. Here’s the rundown of the latest trend of Sin City’s food and fun hybrids.

Mix Lounge + Mix

Upscale eating, upscale drinking, from way far up. Resting high above the Strip on THEhotel’s 64th floor, Mix rings true to its name and combines the best of both worlds. Garnished with the of ideas of world renowned chef Alain Ducasse, designer Patrick Jouin delightfully fuses the adjacent restaurant and the visual genius of Ducasse’s 70-table eatery to the neighboring lounge. The $500,000, 13,000-glass-bulb chandelier is a welcome distraction, but is quickly upstaged when the sesame-crusted duck foie gras arrives. Chef Bruno Davaillon is Ducasse’s on-site pointman and ensures all the dishes retain his avid pursuit of culinary perfection. The bison tenderloin is the epitome of this attention to detail with a generous portion accented with a divine sauce au poivre, and the refreshing crab salad is perfect for the warm autumn nights. The exotic white chocolate banana tart is a fabulous end to the delectable meal. Back in the lounge, Jouin signs off with another mark, as the second-floor VIP area is encapsulated by a striking crown of coral moon rock, modeled to resemble a flame; it is the only thing that can be eye-catching enough to draw away from the view outside. A fiber-optic Milky Way glistens in the lounge “sky,” leaving no vantage point unadorned. Subtly connecting the elements from the restaurant to the lounge, the bar is molded with thick glass panels with small but noticeable air bubbles inside, mirroring the pricey chandelier across the way. The entire cast of Oceans 13 just took part in the one-two punch and the celeb factor is always high. The best part is the cocktail perch is open every night of the week.

Voodoo Lounge + Voodoo Cafè

VooDoo has had Vegas night players under its wicked spell for quite some time. With an electrifying club atmosphere under the moniker of an ultralounge, the Southern flavors from the café one floor below adding even more spice and one of the most impressive views from atop the roof of the Rio, the cultlike following is no surprise. Chris Crotty’s menu in the VooDoo Cafè touts Orleans barbecued shrimp, Creole crab cakes and spicy seafood gumbo that can start up the night. The steak is superb, and the Three Little Pigs, an apricot-glazed pork porterhouse, andouille potato gratin and tasso béarnaise is also worthy of note. Need a cure for the reflux that might chase overindulgence of the spicy Southern morsels? Travel back upstairs and try sticking pins into the creamy VooDoo Doll, a soothing libation. Beware the Witch Doctor, a healer of a different kind, as four kinds of rum create the chaotic clinician; try one solo if you are eager to chase the dark spirits.

Tangerine + Social House

While burlesque and sushi might sound like a bizarre combo, when you take the trendy new eatery Social House and plop it on top of the ever-so-sweet nightclub Tangerine inside Treasure Island, the hybrid of dinner and a party has fully evolved. Tangerine, which is celebrating its second birthday on Oct. 6 in conjunction with Social House, has been a celebrity favorite since its opening. The old-school dance routines, combined with cutting-edge DJs, have brought in the likes of everyone from Jimmy Buffett to Kanye West. Wilmer Valderrama (That ’70s Show, MTV’s Yo Momma) is hosting the b-day bash, and DJ Eric Cubiche provides the soundtrack. Social House comes through with a late-night menu, in addition to its regular hours, to feed the frenzy of nocturnal animals. “The atmosphere is going to play a huge role,” Executive Chef Joseph Elevado said. “The design is exceptional, and that will fuel the vibe we are trying to create. The food and beverage will glue it all together, and with that we will fill the void of quality late-night food and socializing that has been missing on the Strip.” Before heading downstairs, get down on Citrus Peel Miso Cod, mini Kobe Burgers or the full sushi menu. The best part is, you can start with food here and end with food here. Social House’s menu is available until 4 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Tao Nightclub + Tao Asian Bistro

Tao encapsulates what Vegas has become: an international blend of service, décor and sensational personalities. An evolution of entertainment, the newest night invention at The Venetian has staked a claim on the post-sunset market, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Between the exquisite nightclub and the fabulous eatery down below, the 42,000-square-foot complex is the ultimate adult playpen. Noah Teppenberg and Jason Strauss were imported from New York and created what is the quiddity of the Vegas night circuit. Everyone from Madonna to Paris Hilton has partaken in the after-hours pleasures. “We don’t get comfortable,” Strauss said. “We are constantly trying to improve the club. We are constantly upgrading.” Downstairs, with the giant 20-foot-tall Buddha, Chef Sam Hazen has injected New York City’s Tao into the Vegas mainstream. It is impossible to go wrong with the Peking duck, which challenges the hoisin-slathered fowl of the dish’s birthplace in Beijing. The wasabi-crusted filet mignon delivers a flavorful kick and is cooked to perfection, served with a side dish of tempura-battered onion rings filling the stomach with a beautiful sponge to soak up the debauchery awaiting upstairs. The yellowtail sashimi is garnished with a sliver of spicy jalapeno and is given a tart balance by the accompanying ponzu sauce, providing even the most avid sushi lover a surprising treat.

Vegas 4 Visitors 2006 Readers Poll Results By Rick GarmanThousands of votes from around the globe (hello Switzerland!) poured in during our 5th Annual Vegas4Visitors Readers Poll and this week I’ll be revealing your picks in the categories of Favorite Restaurant, Show, Attraction, and Nightclub.Favorite Restaurant
#1 – Delmonico at The Venetian. With literally thousands of restaurants in this city, the voting in this category is always very fractured. The same goes this year where less than 2% separated the eatery in the number five spot from this, the winner of the title for your Favorite Restaurant in Las Vegas. Delmonico’s is Emeril Lagasse’s New Orleans influenced steakhouse and it claimed victory by just a few votes, moving up from the #2 spot in last years voting.

#2 – Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House at the MGM Grand. Emeril’s seafood joint claimed a second straight year at #2 (it tied with Delmonico for the spot last year). In a town this crowded with good food, there’s nothing wrong with being #2.

#3 – Margaritaville at The Flamingo Las Vegas. The Parrot Heads made sure to keep their favorite place to “waste away” in the top five for a second year in a row.

#4 – Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace. This is the first time Bobby Flay’s southwestern inspired joint has made an appearance in this list. I wholeheartedly agree with it being there.

#5 – Austins Steakhouse at Texas Station. Proving that it isn’t just for locals anymore, the place I say serves the best steaks in town comes in for a solid fifth place finish.

Off the charts: first place finisher from last year PF Chang’s China Bistro and fifth place Mon Ami Gabi both fell out of the top five.

Favorite Show
#1 – Mystere at Treasure Island. Many people, including myself, have describe this show as a transformative experience. Obviously many of those people voted in our poll, putting the Cirque du Soleil spectacular at number one.

#2 - Blue Man Group at The Venetian. It’s hard to imagine how what amounts to a big budget performance art piece with guys that have their heads painted blue has turned into such a fan favorite but there it is – number two on your list of favorite shows.

#3 – O at Bellagio. The water themed Cirque show is a critical and fan favorite, outdistancing all but its sister and those blue guys for the number three spot.#4 - Danny Gans at The Mirage. Impressionist extraordinaire Gans does around 100 different spot on celebrity voices during his Vegas show, impressive enough for a fourth place finish.

#5 – KA at MGM Grand. Tell the truth – it was that appearance as a death scene on the season opener of CSI this year that bumped this one into the top five, wasn’t it? Or maybe it’s just that this Cirque show is one of the most eye-popping, visual wonders ever to hit the stage.

Off the charts: Celine Dion who placed at number 4 last year fell out of the top five.

Favorite Attraction
#1 - Bellagio Fountain Shows at Bellagio. The dancing waters in front of Bellagio not only got more votes in this category than any of its competitors but it got more votes than any other single hotel, restaurant, show, casino, or nightclub in any other category as well. With an astounding 49% of the vote, the fountains are your favorite Las Vegas attraction.

#2 - Fremont Street Experience. The second place finisher in this category got a small fraction of the votes that the fountains did, but that doesn’t change the fact that this light and sound spectacular in Downtown Las Vegas is still a favorite among tourists and locals alike.

#3 - Bellagio Conservatory at Bellagio. The colorful gardens are a peaceful respite from the wild and wacky Vegas hubbub and did good enough here to qualify for the third place slot.

#4 - Mirage Volcano at The Mirage. Even though it has been closed for renovations for the better part of the year, the faux-lava spewing attraction still holds the hearts and minds of enough of our voters to come in fourth.

#5 - Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. The sci-fi extravaganza has boldly gone where few others have been able: into the top five in our voting.

Off the charts: Hoover Dam came in at number three last year but couldn’t make it into the top five this year.

Favorite Nightclub
#1 - Pure at Caesars Palace. It’s pretty darned impressive when a brand new club gets enough votes in this competitive category to get into the top 5 but to land at number one? That’s spectacular. It’s official: the hottest club in Vegas is Pure.

#2 - ghostbar at The Palms. The see and be seen hot spot has been on this list almost every year since its inception and did well enough this year for a number two finish.

#3 - Studio54 at MGM Grand. This big club has been around for years but enough of our readers still think it’s a great place to get down as it lands in the number three spot.

#4 - Voodoo Lounge at The Rio. Stand on the patio at Voodoo Lounge and you can wave at all the people at ghostbar across the street on their patio.

#5 - Coyote Ugly at New York-New York. It’s a hootin’ and hollerin’ good time for Coyote Ugly, holding onto a top spot with a number five finish.

Off the charts: the House of Blues squeaked into the top five last year but couldn’t do it again this year.

Rock, Cook return to Comedy Festival.
Tickets are on sale for the Nov. 14-18 event.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
A tribute to Chris Rock and the return of “Comic Relief” highlight the second The Comedy Festival at Caesars Palace, which also brings back a range of familar Las Vegas performers, from Dane Cook to Don Rickles, Nov. 14-18.Tickets for most events went on sale Friday; organizers say more shows may be announced to the festival that expands from three to five days this year.

The festival is co-promoted by HBO and AEG Live, which operates the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. This year, all events are at Caesars; the outdoor amphitheater in front of the casino will replace the Flamingo showroom used last year.

A “village” with sponsor booths and a free entertainment stage hosted by “American Idol” contestant Mikalah Gordon is scheduled for an area in front of Caesars.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Two shows go different directions.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

The most tasteful show in town and the most tasteless both closed last night.
If you can’t figure out which one is “Splash” and which describes Clint Holmes, you don’t read this column much.

It’s an odd coincidence that these two extremes in Las Vegas entertainment both wrapped on the same night. All they have in common is that if they did turnaway business, their host casinos would have tried harder to keep them there.

Some still wonder why Harrah’s Entertainment would drop Holmes, the closest thing Las Vegas has to a universally liked goodwill ambassador. Beyond seeking new diversions for Harrah’s player’s network, it’s likely just economics.

More Here:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2006/Oct-01-Sun-2006/living/9871609.html

NORM: Holmes classy in Harrah’s farewell.Clint Holmes bid a fond farewell to Las Vegas on a magical night that set the bar for classy exits.“See you down the road,” said Holmes, waving one last time to an emotional audience showering him with so many standing ovations Sunday that we lost count.

After 6 1/2 years and 1,872 performances, the curtain came down on a run that will be remembered as much for Holmes’ energy, grace and good will as his broad talents.

Among the many highlights: During a break in the show to honor Holmes, several dozen Harrah’s executives marched in and stood in the main aisle to show their respect as Harrah’s exec Tom Jenkin told the crowd, “And how lucky was Las Vegas when Clint came here to call it home.”

“Look, a Mexican Reporter,” Vinnie Favorito chuckles with his raspy East Coast-stained voice. “Are you from California or Texas?” he asks me. This is going to be a long night.

As he verbally shops through the crowd for more fodder, soon to follow is Arab Guy (terrorist), a nice introduction from German Guy to Jewish Guy (let bygones be bygones), a Mexican PO-lice officer (quick, hide the paraphernalia), White Guy came out a little later (the Klan is kind of like the Rotary Club), Chinese Girl was a good sport (dog lover), then finally, Favorito finds Black Guy. “I’m in the chemical business,” our good-spirited ebony bull’s eye responds to Favorito’s standard occupational question.

“Oh, I’m going in,” the stubby leather-clad comic says, dodging another light on his intimate stage in the upstairs showroom of O’Sheas, so he can better see his next victim.

“Chemical business? Oh, you mean drugs? That makes sense now.” It gets better (maybe worse). Drug-Dealing Black Guy’s real name is Larry.

“Larry?! Next thing you know Klan Guy is going to tell me his name is Jamal.”

I shouldn’t be laughing this hard, but I am. Or is that OK?

“We have fun here,” Favorito told me later in his walk-in closet he referred to as his dressing room. “Nothing is out of reach; I make fun of everyone. We get to laugh at all our differences. As soon as that happens, we realize we’re all the same. Stereotypes lose all their power.”

Favorito says all the wrong things and makes them funny for all the right reasons. The man is hysterical.

We throw around the word “unique” like escort service fliers on the boulevard when describing shows in Las Vegas, but Favorito is truly different. Not different in a Cirque du Soleil contortionist way, or in a painted blue way; Favorito is unique because his comedy is ours, our lives. The cheapest therapy around, he puts on a clinic showing how to laugh at each other and with each other at the same time. Through the sidesplitting abuse, something amazing is happening. Hidden behind the applause and nonstop cackling, we are letting go of our self definitions, insecurities, and our covert partisanships. And the equalizer couldn’t be more jovial.

“Everyone is going to feel equal … except the Mexicans,” Favorito pokes at the reporter turned fan. His public relations escort has her hands on her head. “See, that’s the thing. People think there is going to be a riot in here after hearing what I say, and by the end of the night, they’re huggin’ me. This show erases racism. No stone is left unturned.”

That includes Favorito himself. His Italian heritage takes a self-inflicted beating, as do his man tools. Telling a story about a recent trip to a urologist, where his peephole was adorned with a tubular camera: “The doctor tells me, ‘Well I guess it’s going to be a short film …’ “

The ball-breaking is nothing new. The Boston funnyman has graced The Late Late Show and the Best Damn Sports Show Period. Throughout the industry, he is known as one of the top “roasters” for celebrities, pulling no punches for the A-list elite.

“The show is like a roller coaster: You never know what you are going to walk into, nobody’s safe. You don’t like your relatives, f*ck ‘em. Bring ‘em to me.”

Paris and Lindsay Make Up, Shack Up In VegasThe on-again-off-again feud between Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan is officially over. For now, anyway. The two starlets who have been sparring for weeks (over a boy, of course) buried the hatchet and shared a $25,000 a night Sky Villa at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas this weekend.“They reached out to each other,” a source close to the pair tells us. “They are happy to be friends again.”

The duo arrived by private jet on Saturday and joined James Franco, Regina King and Palms Casino owner George Maloof for a special 21st birthday party honoring actress Michelle Trachtenberg at Tao. Around 11:00 pm, they headed across the street to Social House to munch on appetizers and sip pineapple juice before heading back for their most unlikely sleepover party.

Aliante Station Sneak Peek By Rick Garman

The folks at Station Casinos held an open house for residents near their planned Aliante Station hotel and casino to give neighbors a sneak peek at what’s in store. If the artist rendering is any indication, the hotel will have a similar look and feel to the very successful Red Rock Station. Although not a carbon copy by any means, the overall affect is similar with clean, long horizontal lines mixed with stacked stone to evoke a vaguely retro ‘60s Palm Springs feeling. The new hotel, which will be built on the north side of Las Vegas, will feature over 200 rooms in a nine-story tower when it opens plus a casino, several restaurants including a buffet and food court, a spa and salon, movie theaters, a live entertainment venue, and more. Future expansion of the hotel could include more hotel rooms, restaurants, and perhaps a bowling alley. The hotel will break ground early next year and should be complete by the end of 2008 at the cost of around $600 million.

According to reports in the Las Vegas Review Journal, the open house was a success with most of the comments from nearby residents falling into the “why do we have to wait until 2008” category.

Readers’ Poll Results: Favorite Hotels By Rick GarmanThousands of votes from around the globe poured in during our 5th Annual Vegas4Visitors Readers Poll and this week I’ll be revealing your picks in the Favorite Hotels category. Overall Hotel
This category includes all the hotels in the entire city.
#1 – Bellagio – I know if you win something three years in a row you can call it a three-peat or a trifecta, but what do you call it when you win something five years in a row? Whatever you choose to call it, Bellagio once again takes the crown in this race as your favorite hotel in the entire city of Las Vegas.

#2 – Caesars Palace – The Roman decadence hall of fame came in second place last year and held onto that spot this year as well.

#3 – MGM Grand – The biggest hotel in Vegas didn’t even place in last year’s voting but they made a grand statement this year.

#4 – Wynn Las Vegas – Another new entry to the Top 5, Steve Wynn’s playground for the rich and richer landed at number four.

#5 – The Mirage – A perennial favorite in this category, The Mirage has been slipping in recent years but still managed to hold onto a Top 5 spot.

Off the charts: Mandalay Bay and The Venetian both got bumped out of the Top 5 this year.

Strip Hotel
This category is limited to major hotel casinos on The Strip only. And by the way, to play the hotel has to actually be on The Strip, not a block away.

#1 – Bellagio – For the fourth year in a row, Bellagio is your favorite Strip hotel.

#2 – Caesars Palace – Although it gained traction on Bellagio, Caesars still couldn’t eke out a win. But settling for number two is nothing to be ashamed of.

#3 – Wynn Las Vegas – Proof that if you spend nearly $3 billion on something, people will be impressed.

#4 – Venetian – The Italian themed hotel has been sinking in the ratings in this category, down from number two in 2004 and number three in 2005.

#5 – MGM Grand – The changes at The Grand seem to be impressing our readers – this is its first appearance in this category since the poll started.

Off the charts: The Mirage disappeared from our Top 5 this year after placing as high as number one in past polls.

Downtown Hotel
This category is restricted to hotels in the Downtown area of Las Vegas.

#1 – Golden Nugget – The Nugget has dominated this category since its inception and does so once again with more than 60% of the votes electing this hotel as your Downtown Favorite.

#2 – Main Street Station – It placed a distant second, but gained ground this year, proving what I’ve been saying all along – this is a really nice hotel.

#3 – Four Queens – The hotel named after the founder’s four daughters moved up two spots this year for a third place finish.

#4 – Fitzgerald’s – They may have gotten rid of Mr. O’Lucky, but they still have something going for them, at least according to our readers.

#5 – Binion’s – The once legendary hotel lost its Horseshoe moniker and the World Series of Poker, but enough of our readers still hold a fond place in their heart for the old gal.

Off the charts: The five hotels on the list above are the same five that appeared last year, only in a slightly different order.

Off-Strip Hotel
This category includes all major hotel-casinos that are not located directly on The Strip.

#1 – Green Valley Ranch – Because of how we define “Off-Strip,” this category includes heavyweights such as The Rio, The Palms, and The Hard Rock. That makes the second year in a row win for Green Valley Ranch, a hotel located miles from the spotlight of The Strip all the more impressive.

#2 – The Rio – The reflected glory of the nearby Strip earned this local and tourist favorite a number two spot in this category again this year.

#3 – Orleans – Moving up a notch over last year’s results, the Orleans combines a good value with lots to do to impress our readers.

#4 – The Palms – They slipped a spot from last year but the celebrity hangout still managed a solid fourth place finish.

#5 – Red Rock Resort – Another impressive placement, especially considering that the hotel just opened this year and is one of the furthest from The Strip in this category.

Off the charts: Sam’s Town slipped out of the top five for the first time since this poll started.

Brett’s Vegas Views By Jackie BrettDixie Chicks, the largest-selling female group in music history, will bring their 2006 “The Accidents & Accusations Tour” to the MGM Grand Garden Arena for a special Thanksgiving weekend performance Saturday, Nov. 25. The North American leg of the tour was named after a line in “Easy Silence,” a song on their highly anticipated new album, “Taking the Long Way.” Lead singer Natalie Maines says the show is more old-style rock production and not so much about theatrics and props. Pete Yorn is scheduled to open the show. Tickets are $89.50 and $49.50; call Ticketmaster at 702-474-4000.Japonais opened in Chicago in 2003 and last July in New York City. Now there is a stylish dinner outpost inside The Mirage featuring progressive Japanese cuisine fused with innovative presentations, flavors and ingredient pairings.

The setting is introduced by a “glowing” fire-red canopy and dark slate platform that creates a theatrical foyer to the restaurant. Accommodating 300 people, the 11,000-square-foot space features an array of distinct areas. The modern tropical haven has cascading palm trees and water elements throughout, and a 110-foot-long glowing glass “fire” wall that provides a bold artistic backdrop for the curving onyx bar.

The vibrant 3,000-square-foot bar and lounge that overlooks the casino floor seats 100 guests and features a specially-designed Robata Grill. Custom chandeliers, a disc jockey booth and circular mahogany trellises with shimmering silver and gold sheer drapery add a dramatic touch. Guests can dine on sushi in the lounge. Adjacent to the lounge is a private dining room for up to 16 guests with its own bar, custom copper chandeliers, trellises, water elements, colorful seating and a custom 15-foot-long “royal mosaic” table constructed of gold glass.

The main dining room, traditionally known as the Red Room, seats 175 guests, has a 17-seat, L-shaped marble and slate sushi bar and an adjoining Golden Niche. The room is situated on a raised wide-plank platform, constructed of dark wood with additional raised seating areas. Other noteworthy design elements include Japonais’ signature walnut “fin” ceiling-stone columns with copper and onyx details and custom blackened-steel railings.

The restaurant’s trademark walls, made of red brick and blue glass designed to resemble water, complement the Madagascar ebony-wood screens and gold accents. Design elements are fused with dramatic theatrical lighting. Japonais’ striking signature tree sculpture takes center stage with up-lit branches and custom-made moss pods.

International recording artist, actor, impressionist and comedian Jeff Trachta, best known to over 450 million viewers worldwide as Thorne Forrester for more than eight years on CBS’s “The Bold & the Beautiful,” has brought his one-man show, “Jeff Trachta Live!” to the Rio for a limited engagement. Adding to the haunting nightly entertainment is The Enigma, the odd human marvel with horns surgically embedded into his skull and tattoos from head to toe in blue jigsaw puzzle pieces. Performing nightly, The Enigma will utilize props including electric shock devices, a stomach pump and chainsaws to disturbingly thrill the audience. This human freak show has received national recognition through performances on the Nine Inch Nails’ U.S. tour, the television show “X-Files” and photographs in National Geographic Magazine.

Lady Diabla, who often toured with the popular traveling sideshow, Ward’s World of Wonders, also will be performing nightly. This lithe femme fatale will frighten audiences by swallowing swords, driving nails four inches into her head and lying face down on broken glass.

Hunters “Worst Las Vegas Podcast #5″I’ve really been enjoying this. I’m having fun with this and so I expect to keep on doing it for awhile. There are certainly better Vegas podcasts out there but this isn’t what that is about… It’s more like an extension to the blog and while I have a lot to learn, I think we’ve been doing an okay job so far.Call our listener line, anytime: 702-508-4232

You can leave a message that we will read on the air. Grab the number and put it in your cell phone so you can even phone in from Vegas. Also, if you are a casino employee or otherwise have info, you can use this as an anonymous tip line to feed us the goods.

This time around I talk about Harrah’s rejection of the first bid, the second bid and what might happen to their Strip plans if the deal goes through. After that, it’s on to my thoughts on the Downtown Las Vegas casino gaming drop and if it was just a blip. Then lastly I talk about the future of the podcast and a little bit about what’s coming up.

Once again, comments are welcome and phone messages are very much appreciated.

DANCE: Floor Afire.
The Luxor’s new dance show generates plenty of heat. By Geri Jeter/Las Vegas WeeklyOkay. You’ve seen Dancing with the Stars and are familiar with the fox-trot, the quick step, the jive and the tango. But if you are a regular viewer, the dances can become repetitious—the contestants quickly reach the boundaries of their limited step vocabularies. You want more.

The sexy Latin and ballroom dance show Burn The Floor offers way more. Brought in partially to fill the void left at Luxor by Hairspray, this isn’t the usual fill-in troupe.Choreographer Jason Gilkison turns the traditional ballroom-dance syllabus on its head, deconstructing the formal dances and reformatting them into a high-energy exhibition of the joy of dancing. The cast is led by champion ballroom-dance team Damon and Rebecca Sugden, who demonstrate the dances in their more traditional forms and are especially effective in the dreamlike waltz and sultry tango sequences. The production numbers grow out of these duets and showcase great synchronized pair dancing and some hip gyrations that give Shakira a run for her money. (These couples have such real chemistry that there is no need for the faux-ecstasy facial expressions they often effect.) While the choreography is heavy on Latin dance, the cast is capable of much more, from the traditional quick step and fox-trot to ripping it up in the rocking finale set to “Proud Mary”—the best execution of these moves since the Ikettes hung up their wigs.

Vocalist Rebecca Verrier is a powerhouse. With a full and rich voice, she navigates the score from the sexy Latin rhythms to the torchy “I Just Wanna Make Love to You.” The show’s male vocalist, Kieron Kulik, though engaging, seemed a bit underpowered by comparison.

The 70-minute show is a great bargain, an antidote to a town overrun with Cirque shows, and is one of the few Strip productions with ticket prices under $50. It’s only here for a short time; don’t miss it. Burn the Floor Where: Luxor Main Showroom. When: Through October 26. Price: $29, $41. Info: 262-4400.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: A little suggestion for Elton.

If you were a teenager in the 1970s, you have to remember “Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy.” Even if you didn’t own the Elton John album, you know the surrealistic cover art that papered every record store in 1975.A couple of things still stand out. It was the first album I remember knowing about in advance. In this era of being bombarded with advertising from every media platform, it’s a stretch to remember walking into a record store mostly unaware of what you would find.

I don’t recall how I knew “Fantastic” was coming out, but I remember going to get it just as surely as I remember the oft-practiced trick of getting home with a vinyl album on a 10-speed bike.

LIFE ON THE COUCH: Care to guess how much viva NBC has for ‘Las Vegas’?
By Christopher Lawrence/Las Vegas Review Journal
Just how late to the party is “Las Vegas”?And the Montecito still won’t open its doors for four more days.

But don’t blame the show’s late premiere (9 p.m. Friday, KVBC-TV, Channel 3) on “Las Vegas” creator Gary Scott Thompson. He’s certainly no David Chase-ian, 18-months-to-finish-a-dozen-”Sopranos”-episodes diva.

Thompson says NBC never gave him a reason for the scheduling move. (This fall, only the fading “The O.C.” has a later scheduled return date, Nov. 2, and that’s largely due to Fox’s baseball commitment.)

The Top 10 Blackjack Questions

by Henry Tamburin/ From Casino Player Magazine
How many questions do you get on blackjack? Glad you asked. I figure about five a month, on average, so that’s 60 a year, or roughly 2,100 over the past 35 years that I’ve been a blackjack writer (whew). And what were the most asked questions? Here they are, slightly paraphrased, and in no particular order.

Playing with Style
Good etiquette is an important part of a winning strategy

by Basil Nestor from Casino Player Magazine
“Bond. James Bond.”Agent 007 was playing high-stakes baccarat the first time he said those words in a movie. And of course, he was wearing a tuxedo. Classy situation, classy person. That is what the filmmakers were saying. They were blending a bunch of powerful ideas and stereotypes: the excitement of risk, being cool under pressure, gracious winning, the hipness of knowing the rules, and the sexiness of being able to do it all simultaneously while stacking chips, making a date with a hottie, and saving the world from Dr. No.

It’s a fantasy, but like most enduring fantasies, the basic components are all true. It is cool to do all those things without breaking a sweat. And in the real world, it actually gives you a bit of an edge in some circumstances, because dealers, pit bosses, and other casino personnel may cut you slack in borderline situations. Yin-yang decisions usually go to the player who is suave and cool (as opposed to the one who is all puffy-faced and shouting so loud he is spitting).

Playing Full Coin
It may, or may not, be the right move

by John Robison from Strictly Slots Magazine
Almost every casino has its own gaming guide, and every casino gaming guide I’ve ever read recommends playing full coin at all times on all slot machines. Many slot books make this same recommendation. The reason the books and guides give for always playing full coin is that you get the maximum long-term payback possible from a machine only when you play full coin.

This statement is true for some machines. For others, it isn’t. Moreover concentrating only on long-term payback completely ignores the fact that you are putting more money at risk when you play full coin than when you play short coin. Is the extra risk always balanced out by the increase in payback?

Are you really better off playing full coin at all times on all machines? I analyzed the programming on over 1,000 slot machines to formulate Robison’s Rules for Playing Full Coin, which follow.

BARRY’S BACK

Barry Manilow made a hip-happening entrance over the weekend.
During his introduction Saturday, the Las Vegas Hilton headliner came onstage in a wheelchair at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

As Nicholas L. Ribis, president and CEO of Resorts International and co-owner of the Las Vegas Hilton, welcomed Manilow, his backup singers came out in nurses’ outfits.

Holding up his newly won Emmy, Manilow bounded out of the chair and put on a performance at an event presented by Resorts International and the Atlantic City Hilton, affiliates with the Las Vegas Hilton.

Manilow, who recently underwent outpatient arthroscopic surgery on his hips, returns to the Las Vegas Hilton on Nov. 8.

DEFAULT DANGER: Monorail finances shakyDefault is a looming danger for the Las Vegas Monorail after low fares failed to draw enough riders and a fare hike chased off too many passengers, according to a bleak financial analysis released Tuesday. The assessment by Fitch Ratings, a New York-based credit rating firm, also dropped the monorail’s bond rating further into “junk” status, possibly imperiling plans to extend the $650 million line to McCarran International Airport and around the Strip.

The report cited greatly weakened ridership, flat revenues and continued losses in downgrading bonds used to build the privately run 4-mile monorail line behind the Strip to “CCC” from “BB,” and calling its outlook “negative.”

A blood-sucking good time.
By Len Butcher from The Las Vegas Review Journal
Trust me, I’d never betray you and recommend a show that bites — and this one really sucks-blood that is. So I’m going to make an exception and “Count-enance” Dracula for your entertainment pleasure. The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s presentation of the classic Transylvanian thriller takes the stage at the Judy Bayley Theater October 27-29 and you don’t want to miss it!Nevada Ballet Theatre last presented Dracula to sold-out houses in 2004. It was followed with accolades from patrons demanding it be a regular “Halloween weekend” treat as Nutcracker has become for the holiday season. And when it comes to Dracula, it’s best to stay on his good side.

The story recounts the exploits of Count Vlad Dracula, the 400-year-old Transylvanian vampire who, driven by his bloodthirsty desires, journeys to 19th Century England. It is here that Dracula and his undead harem wreak havoc on the lives of London solicitor Jonathan Harker, the young and beautiful Lucy and her friend Mina, Lucy’s suitor Dr. Seward, and of course, Dracula’s nemesis Dr. Van Helsing. The ballet portrays Dracula as an attractive and passionate villain who ultimately loses everything in this battle of good versus evil.

Based on the original gothic masterpiece by Bram Stoker in1897, Dracula has been performed as a ballet in America for over a decade. The story and concept have become a cultural phenomenon that has spanned every genre–from film, music and dance to pop culture. Bruce Steivel, the Theatre’s artistic director, takes this powerful drama and adapts it for those whom aren’t necessarily balletomanes–fusing it with a range of emotions–exploring the depths of good and evil through elegance, beauty and heart-pounding energy. According to Steivel, the dancing is “intense and athletic.” In other words, prepare to be on the edge of your seat for this one!

With music by Wojciech Kilar and Johann Strauss, this Victorian-era tale utilizes both modern and classical dance. NBT’s performance follows the original plot closely, and contains intriguing choreography, with striking costumes and sets that only enhance the “Transylvanian mood.”

Kilar is considered one of Poland’s premier symphonic composers and his works have been performed by several major international orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. For the past 30 years, he has also been composing music for films and has worked with acclaimed directors Andrzej Wajda, Francis Ford Coppola and Roman Polanski. He has been awarded numerous international prizes for composition including the A.S.C.A.P. Award for his score from Coppola’s film Dracula.

In celebration of NBT’s season opener, a special pre-show dinner will be held at Lawry’s Prime Rib as well as an after-hours party, as yet not determined where it will be held. Subscribers and single ticket purchasers are also invited to attend. Cost is $80 for dinner and $60 for the after party. For ticket information, call UNLV’s performing arts box office at 895-ARTS. Tickets start at $29. A bargain at twice the price.
