Harrah’s buyout price could go up.
Private-equity firms offer $15 billion for company.
The price tag on a massive buyout offer to take Harrah’s Entertainment private could go higher in coming weeks, analysts said Monday.
Private-equity firms Texas Pacific Group and Apollo Management on Monday offered $81 a share, or more than $15 billion, to buy Harrah’s.
But Joe Greff, a gaming analyst with Bear Stearns, set a “fair value range” for Harrah’s of as much as $85 a share. He said he believes officials at Harrah’s will point to the company’s development pipeline and land holdings to “indirectly solicit a higher offer” in the low to mid-80s.
He said officials at Harrah’s should respond to the offer publicly within one to two weeks.

STRIP LAND DEAL: Harrah’s, Boyd swap plots.
Analysts say exchange good for both gaming companies.
Two of the city’s biggest gaming operators have struck a strategic land deal key to their future growth.
Harrah’s Entertainment and Boyd Gaming Corp. said Monday they will swap two key Strip parcels in a tax-deferred exchange that will enable each company to expand their resort-corridor redevelopment plans.
Boyd Gaming will trade its 1.8-acre Barbary Coast property at Flamingo and the Strip for a 24-acre parcel Harrah’s is assembling on and around the site of the former Westward Ho next to Boyd’s Stardust property.

The famous Las Vegas gentlemen’s club, which had its license revoked earlier this month after owner Rick Rizzolo pleaded guilty to several felonies, may get a new lease of life. Local restaurant owner Michael Signorelli, who operates the Golden Steer Steakhouse, has apparently applied for a new permit to serve alchol at the club. If his application is granted, the license would be good for six months.

There are rumblings that the recent sighting mentioned here of Diana Ross at Caesars Palace is part of a TV special featuring Cher, Bette Midler and Elton John. No one’s confirming or denying that one. Caesars is, however, flatly denying reports of a deal that would bring in “Daisy Duke’s,” Jessica Simpson’s barbecue restaurant chain.

The producers of “Riverdance” and horror film creator Wes Craven are pitching a horror magic show in Las Vegas, according to a published report.
Look for “Shag With a Twist” to move from Krave nightclub, aka the Harmon Theatre, to the Plaza’s vintage showroom in mid-October. A big push to sell the quirky dance revue will come with an animated video for the overhead canopy at the Fremont Street Experience by Shag (Josh Agle). The dance show takes its name from the artist and his swanky,’60s-bachelor aesthetic.

Bertolini’s Authentic Trattoria located at The Forum Shops at Caesars has begun a complete renovation this month. The new design will feature a combination of contemporary fixtures and old-world Italian flair throughout the restaurant. A mezzanine level will be added with seating that will overlook The Fountain of the Gods. Executives anticipate a re-opening in late December.
Wayne Newton’s holiday show wil be at Harrah’s from Nov. 22 to Dec. 31. Prices are $86 and $113.50.
Miami hotspot Mansion will be making a move to Las Vegas at some point next year. Our sources insist that Mansion is going into the space that had previously housed Curve at the Aladdin. This would mark a second nightlife destination for the upcoming Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino with Triq Ultra Lounge already confirmed for a late 2006 opening.

Major changes are underway at the preeminent downtown hotel The Golden Nugget including a big makeover, new restaurants, new rooms, a new pool, and more but one of the most dramatic changes involves the removal of a few of the hotels icons: the golden nuggets themselves. In an effort, perhaps, to stress that this is not your father’s Nugget, the hotel is putting the collection of 32 nuggets up for auction, including the famous “Parrot Head” nugget, which weighed in at nearly 2 pounds. If you’re interested in snagging one of them, they’ll go on the block on December 3rd in Los Angeles.

This is Phat Strad, a unique international group of classically trained women who perform rock music arranged for a string quartet, playing futuristic electronic instruments, with an industrial strength techno drum groove. Definitely unique. Hours: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

“Elvis Remembered by Jerry Schilling”
Steve, can you mention to your members that any Elvis fans can watch an interview segment I conducted on “Lunchtime With Ira” with Jerry Schilling, Elvis’ close friend and author of a new book. They can just go to google.com, then hit google video, or youtube.com and put in “Elvis Remembered by Jerry Schilling” in the search engine of those websites.

Station Casinos spends millions on upgrades.
By Howard Sturtz/Las Vegas Review Journal
Station Casinos executives found a way to fill time in between building new hotel-casinos — upgrade their older properties.
Since 2005, the company has spent $542 million on expansion projects at its Las Vegas casinos, a process that began in 2005 and will carry over into 2007. Station Casinos Chief Financial Officer Glenn Christenson said company planners are already looking at the next round of improvements.
“Part of our strategy has always been that when we first acquire the land, we master-plan out the first 10 to 12 years of the property,” Christenson said. “The problem, if you want to call it that, is that the phenomenal growth in Las Vegas has accelerated some of those improvements. The growth just doesn’t seem to be slowing.”

NORM: Signs suggest Prince to rule Rio.
Prince fans soon may be partying like it’s 1999.
A Web site connected to Prince is hinting that his rumored Rio headliner deal is done.
Since Monday, his www.3121.com Web site — a reference to his “3121″ album — has been showing only a red-and-blue graphic in the shape of the Rio.
Recent sightings of Prince at the Rio and elsewhere with Harrah’s executives have fueled the rumors, and he’s known for sending cryptic clues to his fans.
“It looks good. Take it to the bank,” said a source close to the Prince camp.

NORM: Producer quarreling with partner’s wife.
Frank Sinatra never allowed women in the Rat Pack. This might be why.
Dick Feeney, producer of “The Rat Pack Is Back,” issued a news release Saturday saying Lisa Dawn Miller, wife of “Rat Pack” co-producer and performer Sandy Hackett, has been barred from “all backstage areas, dressing rooms and offices” at the Greek Isles, the show site.
Feeney, who is Hackett’s partner, added that Miller is to be denied comps and is not allowed to act in any official or unofficial capacity as it pertains to his TRP Entertainment.
Reached at his office at the Greek Isles on Saturday night, Feeney characterized the dispute as a case of Miller being “the partner’s wife from hell.”
Feeney emphasized that he and Hackett, son of legendary comedian Buddy Hackett, “have no problems.”
Hackett has been playing Joey Bishop in the show since it opened in 2002
Miller and Hackett were traveling to Los Angeles and did not return telephone calls by deadline.
In a second e-mail to the media, Feeney called Miller an “amateur … with marginal talent” whose performing credits were either “favors or unpaid gigs.”
He scoffed at her CD “Fly Away,” saying it ranks 323,826th, according to LML Records, an online record company.
Feeney said by telephone that the “final straw” came when Miller expressed her support on a Web site for Bea Fogelman, who is attempting to challenge the legitimacy of trade names. Fogelman, who specializes in celebrity impersonators, is director of the Entertainment Network and a Las Vegas referral agency.
Miller is the daughter of Ron Miller, who wrote “For Once in My Life,” “Touch Me in the Morning,” “A Place in the Sun” and Celine Dion’s hit “If I Could.” He won a Grammy for Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” collaboration with Gladys Knight.

A BIG TRIQ
Illusionist Steve Wyrick has a special Triq up his sleeve: Included in his $34 million project for a new show at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood is an adjoining nightclub with an ultralounge.
The 27,000-square-foot Triq nightclub will also have a 6,000-square-foot Triq lounge.
“I wanted to do something out of the box: have a headliner put in a monster club,” said Wyrick, whose show, “Real Magic,” tentatively is set to open Nov. 6 in a new 500-seat theater.
“I feel like I’m bringing something different to the Strip. Guests can watch the show and go right into the nightclub, like Tao, where you eat and go to the nightclub.”
Tony Verdugo, who has made a name for himself as a late-night club operator, will run the Triq operation. He started Drai’s, Seven and Empire Ballroom.

NFL FOOTBALL: Don’t Be Alone.
Join other fans at a variety of bars across the valley.
By John Przyby/Las Vegas Review Journal
Ah, blessed autumn!
Falling temperatures. Leaves turning color, somewhere in the world if not exactly here. And, best of all, the return of real football.
The National Football League begins its regular season Thursday, which means it’s time for our annual list of bars that cater to fans of specific NFL teams.
The idea is to tell die-hard fans — you know who you are — where they can watch their favorite teams surrounded by fellow fans of their teams.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Amazing Johnathan creates new material for Comedy Central special.
The Amazing Johnathan says he didn’t go out of his way — well, except for a trip to New York — for a Comedy Central special that fell in his lap.
The comedian filmed an hourlong special last weekend at Manhattan’s historic Hudson Theater (now part of the Millennium Broadway Hotel).
“This is a huge deal. This is definitely going to bring in a new legion of fans,” he says.
The cable network keeps the comedian’s cruel brand of magic alive in reruns, but hasn’t talked to him about a new special since he moved to Las Vegas and became a resident headliner in 2001.

Slots Review by Gayle Mitchell
1) Bingo Nights Slotto: AC Coin, 2 spins. 87-92%
Bingo Nights is recognizable by the sphere atop the machine enclosing a group of lottery-style ball triggered during the bonus round. This sphere is used for bingo balls, in this case, along with the card.
Three bonus symbols will set the sphere in motion accompanied by the rockin’ sound of “Boogie Nights’.
Your bingo card will require a couple more numbers before Bingo! Your bonus reward will depend on the bingo balls that drop and can ‘reach the sky’ with 21,600 credits.
Double Diamond is the familiar wild icon utilized here and 1-4 of these icons will double the jackpot. Line up 5 of these classic symbols playing 180 coins and Bingo! the top jackpot of 100,000 is yours.
2) Elvis Multi Strike: IGT. 2 spins. 87%.
As Elvis slot lovers, these features will be familiar–Photo Memories Bonus with pix of our hero for Collect. Record Sales Bonus where we choose a record that produces a Silver, Gold or Platinum bonus reward.
Then there’s the Fan-O-Meter top box bonus wherein your Elvis song pick displays a film clip and a live performance by The King. The Meter cycles through a group of bonus bucks and multipliers and if the Encore level is reached, an additional prize amount is yours.
Additional features consist of three, 5-reel, 20-line separate screens that with a 300 coin max. bet will put you in the top jackpot qualifying round.
Line up the letters E-L-V-I-S on the first payline of the bottom reel set and you’ve scored a payout of 10,000 times the credits wagered.
The Rockin’ Re-Spin Bonus combines with Photo Memories and Record Sales to rack up additional credits from multipliers and wild symbols appearing during the round.
Elvis again brings fans a ‘Big Hunk O’ Love’ and Big Hits.
3) S&H Green Stamps: Bally. 2 spins. 86-96%
Nostalgia reigns as slot players are taken back to 1950’s and 60’s S&H Green Stamps catalogues.
Some of the symbols include pearl-adorned housewives and toasters.
Align 4 Saver Book symbols and move on to the Quick Saver bonus. Choose one of the books and align your reward from 10 to 500 times the line bet.
The stamp credits mount and can be traded for free games with the Save and Win Bonus as follows:
1 stamp book=5 free games at 10X normal pay and 100 bonus credits.
2 books=10 free games at 1-X and 250 bonus
3 books=15 free games at 10X and 450 bonus
4 books=20 free games at 10X and 700 bonus
5 books=25 free games at 10X and 1000 bonus.

How to Play Caribbean Stud by Bill Burton
The popularity of the Caribbean Stud has grown immensely over the last few years. It is a table game that also offers the player a chance to make a side bet to win a progressive jackpot. This has added to its appeal even if the odds of winning the big jackpot are around 649,000 to 1. The house edge for the main game is about 5 percent.
How To Play
Caribbean Stud is played on a blackjack-sized table. The game is based on poker and you should know the ranking of hands. You are playing against the dealer and your hand must beat the dealer’s hand. You do not have to worry about beating the other player’s hands.

From “Eye On Vegas”
Harrah’s Crashes Tea Party.
A tidy merger between two of Britain’s largest gaming companies was thrown for a loop last week when Harrah’s Entertainment crashed the party with a premium offer to shareholders as the island nation nears a large-scale wave of gaming deregulation. Talks between London Clubs and their rival, Stanley Leisure, ceased after Harrah’s Entertainment’s offer, although counter proposals are expected. Britain’s new Gambling Act has opened the door for as many as 17 new casinos in upcoming years, including a “Las Vegas style mega casino,” which Harrah’s has expressed interest in operating. Harrah’s’ offer received the backing of the London Clubs’ board of directors which has had financial difficulties from several mismanaged and ill-advised projects, including a less than successful venture in Las Vegas. With Harrah’s cornered out of the lucrative Asian market for the time being, expect the gaming giant to continue a strong push for involvement in the British gaming market. Harrah’s’ European development honcho, Andrew Tottenham, noted that London Clubs International is extremely attractive to the company with plans for at least five new casino openings in United Kingdom cities such as Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and London.
Just Loungin’
Fleur de Lys (Mandalay Bay) is easily one of our very favorite Las Vegas restaurants, although not for the reasons you might think. Renowned chef Hubert Keller’s brilliant French eatery refuses to be pretentious and continues to fight the snobbery, a bi-product of Keller’s affable personality and steeped history. The original Fleur de Lys in San Francisco was the country’s first French restaurant to have a gender integrated service staff, to print their menu in English and force their waiters to drop the tuxedos in favor of formal yet relaxed uniforms. Keller’s insistence on staying cutting edge has always permeated his Las Vegas outpost as well. The $5,000 FleurBurger, personal dining cabanas, and the city’s finest restaurant with a DJ booth all stand out as prime examples to our point. Fleur De Lys’ general manager, Tobias ‘The’ Peach, has upped the ante once again by introducing a brand-new lounge menu to the upscale eatery. While lounge entrees like the Salmon Ravioli might be typical Keller fare, ultra-mini Angus Sliders with fingerling potato fries and three flavors of freshly popped popcorn (smoked Jalapeno with fresh bacon bits, Truffled and Parmesan Paprika if you’re wondering) are wonderful forays into the untraditional. If you want to enjoy a hearty meal, do it justice and dine in the dining room, for a quick snack or some fare to accompany a drink, you have to check out this lounge menu.
LEGENDARY PERFORMER TONY BENNETT TO HEADLINE LAS VEGAS HILTON OCTOBER 20 & 21
Tony Bennett, who has more than 100 recordings to his credit and has sold more than 50 million albums world-wide, will headline at the Las Vegas Hilton on Friday and Saturday, October 20 & 21 at 9 p.m.

Tony Bennett’s initial successes came via a string of Columbia singles in the early 1950’s, including such chart-toppers as “Because of You,” “Rags To Riches” and a remake of Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart.” He had 24 songs in the Top 40, including “I Wanna Be Around,” “The Good Life,” “Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)” and his signature song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,” which garnered him two Grammy Awards. Tony Bennett is one of a handful of artists to have new albums charting in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and beyond.
He introduced a multitude of songs into the Great American Songbook that have since become standards for pop music. He has toured the world to sold out audiences with rave reviews whenever he performs and was recently named a Kennedy Center Honoree in December of 2005.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Brown, Trachta hope to make good impression in Vegas.
Danny Gans had the comedic impressions all to himself for much of the year, but two new contenders hope to imitate his success.
Gordie Brown is scheduled for a “soft” opening starting Wednesday in his new 800-seat theater at The Venetian, before a grand opening with an invited-guest audience on Oct. 24.
Last week also marked the quiet addition of Jeff Trachta as an afternoon attraction at the Rio, in the slot formerly held by ventriloquist Ronn Lucas. “I came out of the womb doing impressions,” says the performer better known for his years on “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

Commemorative chips celebrate the opening of Playboy Club at The Palms.
By Len Butcher
I want you to read this item first so that you don’t miss it, even though I think it will appeal more to the guys who read my column. To commemorate the grand opening of the first-ever Las Vegas Playboy Club, The Palms is releasing limited-edition Playboy Club casino chips. Beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5 (that’s tomorrow for those of you who are “date challenged”), the $5, $10, $25, $50 and $100 denomination chips will be available on gaming tables and at the main casino cage.
The commemorative chips will feature iconic Playboy imagery including Hugh M. Hefner, circa 1953; the Playboy Mansion, Hefner’s 30-room gothic Tudor Home in Los Angeles; Big Bunny, Hefner’s private DC-9; and Marilyn Monroe, a centerfold shot that appeared in the December 1953 issue as Playboy’s “Sweetheart of the Month.” For more info visit www.palms.com.
The following day, the Playboy Club will re-emerge at the top of the Palms’ new Fantasy Tower as the centerpiece of a multi-level entertainment complex that features high-end gaming, dining and nightlife. In addition, a new restaurant concept, Nove Italiano (pronounced no-vay), and Moon Nightclub will be unveiled. The club and the restaurants will be a welcome addition not only to The Palms, but to Las Vegas as well and I wish them all good luck.

LIFE IN LAS VEGAS
By Len Butcher
Received the following via the Internet recently and thought it would be fun to pass it on for anyone planning to move to our town, or even for visitors. See what you think.
First, it’s pronounced LOSS VAYGUS, nev-ADDA (not nev-AH-da). It doesn’t matter how they say it in other places, You live HERE Now.
Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Las Vegas has no set traffic rules. There’s no book about them. All you can do is get in your car and hope you survive! It’s impossible to drive around a block and wind up on the same street that you started on! The Chamber of Commerce calls this a “scenic drive.” The 8 a.m. rush hour is 4:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The 5 p.m. rush hour is 11:30 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. Friday’s rush hour starts on Thursday morning and ends some time late Sunday night.
If you actually stop at a yellow light, then you cannot be from Las Vegas. You may only apply your brakes when the end of a yellow light and the beginning of the red light create a “pumpkin-orange” hue. For the most part, you can do anything you want, as long as it isn’t in a school zone. Rainbow Boulevard has THREE exits from the 95, this just makes giving driving directions to newbies more entertaining.
There is also a Lake Mead “Drive” and a Lake Mead “Boulevard” and both run east/west but are 30 miles apart. You have to be specific when you say “the corner of Lake Mead and …” Again this is just another way to harass the 5,000 newcomers every month.
The 215 beltway intersects on the north and the south with many of the same streets, such as Jones/215, Decatur/215 and Rainbow/215. You must be specific in your directions or the repairman will end up 25 miles from your house. Ditto for newcomers. Many major roads just end abruptly in somebody’s garage, a Home Depot, a casino or McCarran International Airport runway and start again after the interruption. That was done to encourage you to “see the sights” and meet new people.
Never attempt to access any road after an apocalyptic event like rain, blowing dust or a three-day weekend. Once a year, when it rains, the Las Vegas Wash and the City of Las Vegas become as one. The wind blows every day and it is impossible to live in Las Vegas without some kind of allergy drug.
Construction on I-15 and U.S .95 is a way of life and a permanent form of entertainment. No highway or major road will ever be completed. Get used to it!
And, yes, we all know that man in a teddy and a tiara on Fremont Street. His name is Leslie and he probably makes more money than you do.
And, these are my favorites:
You know you’re from Las Vegas, Nevada, when …
• You think a red light is merely a suggestion.
• All of your out-of-state friends start to visit after September but clear out come May.
• You think someone driving wearing oven mitts is clever.
• You think six tons of crushed rock makes a beautiful yard.
• You notice your car overheating before you drive it.
• Your house is made of stucco and has a red clay tile roof.
• You no longer associate bridges with water, only shade.
• You know a swamp cooler is not a happy-hour drink.
• You can say 115 degrees without fainting. (But it’s a dry heat!!!)
• Every other vehicle is a 4×4.
• Vehicles with open windows have the right-of-way in the summer.
• People break out coats when temperature drops below 70.
• You discover, in July, it only takes two fingers to drive your car.
• The pool can be warmer than you are
• You can make sun tea instantly.
• Kids will ask, “What’s a mosquito?”
• Dogs will ask, “What’s a flea?”
• People with black cars or who have black upholstery in their car are automatically assumed to be from out-of-state or nuts!
• You notice the best parking spots are determined by shade instead of distance.
• The air conditioner is on your list of best friends.
• You realize that Valley Fever isn’t a disco dance.
• In summer the water from the cold water tap is the same temperature as the hot one.
• You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
• Sunscreen is sold year round, kept at the front of the checkout counter, a formula less than 30 SPF is a joke, and you wear it just to go to the mailbox.
• No one would dream of putting vinyl/leather upholstery in a car.
• And no, we do not live elsewhere and commute every day! People actually live in Las Vegas.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.

NORM: Maloof unveils another fantasy.
Along with opening the first Playboy Club in 25 years, Palms owner George Maloof officially unveils another first tonight: a retractable roof on a nightclub-topped tower.
The 40-by-60-foot sliding top fits over Moon, the nightclub that crowns Maloof’s new 400-foot, $300 million Fantasy Tower.
“It’s one of a kind. There hasn’t been anything like this anywhere,” Maloof said during a tour of the tower as workers added finishing touches and Bunny dealers practiced their blackjack.
The retractable roof was originally planned for Rain, the largest nightclub at the Palms, Maloof said.
“It was a cool idea, and we saved it,” he said.
Escalators connect Moon with the Playboy Club, one floor down, and Nove, an Italian restaurant operated by N9NE Group’s Michael Morton and Scott DeGraff, who also run Moon.
When the roof is closed, Moon will be ablaze with special lighting and projection imagery.
Nove, Italian for nine, opens to the public Sunday.
