NORM: V Theater chief says coup failed.
Entertainment producer David Saxe has regained control of V Theater and the company behind it after a power play by a minority partner fell apart.
Reached late Wednesday, Saxe said he could not comment other than to say, “They are out, and I am in.”
The hostile takeover was orchestrated by Saxe associates Richard Heftel and Jocelyne Uy, chief operating officer of Variety Theater Group, insiders said.
Saxe, the producer of “V –The Ultimate Variety Show” and majority partner of the V Theater at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood, was vacationing in Mexico last month when Uy told me that Saxe had been voted out.
A legal battle ensued after Saxe returned, and sources said he quickly gained the upper hand after some damning evidence was discovered. Heftel has agreed to turn over his share of the company, and Uy no longer is with the company, the sources said.
Saxe’s attorney, Ross Goodman, said, “It was a no-brainer that Saxe would end up with the theater.”
Heftel and Uy could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

THE STRIP: Wynn dealers’ complaints rejected.
Commissioner says tip-sharing program is legal.
By Howard Stutz/Las Vegas Review Journal
Nevada’s labor commissioner Wednesday rejected complaints filed by more than 100 dealers over Wynn Las Vegas’ new tip pooling policy, saying the program where tips are now shared between dealers and supervisors is legal.
“Based on what we’ve seen, Wynn Resorts is not violating state law regarding tip pooling,” Labor Commissioner Michael Tanchek said.
Tanchek said the state’s Department of Business and Industry will continue to look at Wynn Las Vegas’ new policy and investigate any new complaints. He also cautioned other companies about instituting a similar tip-sharing concept.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Cirque stumbles when traveling ‘Delirium’ stops on the Strip

What would be good for Pink Floyd may not be good for the Strip. Cirque du Soleil’s “Delirium” may have settled once and for all the question of how many Cirques are too many in Las Vegas.
The company had high hopes for last weekend’s touring arena show at the MGM Grand Garden to perhaps drop by again to cover for some of the resident shows during their vacations. But the audience for the first of two performances last weekend — a bad one after Labor Day, to be sure — left plenty of empty rows in the higher sections and did not seem fully engaged. Many filed out during the “Allegra” encore number.
It’s important to remember that in some markets, “Delirium” is the first time the circus has come to town. Most people hold a special place for their first encounter with Cirque, perhaps explaining why the oldest running Las Vegas show, “Mystere,” remains the stated favorite of many locals.

Top Chef Returns Breaking News

In the inaugural season of Top Chef, the hit reality series fromBravo <http://www.bravotv.com/> , culinary hopefuls from Las Vegas gave a great showing and proved to be the show’s most memorable participants. Finalist Tiffani Faison, who had been serving tables at Tao Las Vegas <http://www.taolasvegas.com/> , lost in the finals and Stephen Aspirinio, who was working as a sommelier for Nob Hill <http://www.mgmgrand.com/dining/nobhill-californian-restaurant.aspx> (MGM Grand), created a true love him or hate him crowd following before bowing out in the semi-finals. This year, Top Chef producers once again came to Las Vegas Food & Beverage Magazine looking for young culinary talent to plug into the second season. After providing the enigmatic Aspirinio last season, we found another sharp up-and-comer looking for his break in Marcel Vignon, currently serving as master cook under Joel Robuchon. While Marcel gladly admits he can be bossy in the kitchen, he insists his creative dishes will earn him respect, which should make for some must-see T.V. Vignon isn’t the only Las Vegan who will find himself battling for Top Chef host Tom Colicchio’s admiration. Another MGM staffer who has made the show is Emily Sprissler, a line cook at Nob Hill under the amazingly talented executive chef, Sven Mede. But wait, there’s more. Two more Las Vegas residences have also made the show. Otto Borsich is an instructor at theLas Vegas Culinary Institute <http://www.vegasculinary.com/> , and while he might be the show’s older contestant, don’t take him lightly as he once served as a cook on a nuclear submarine. Lastly, Elia Aboumrad rounds out the culinary quartet with an interesting resume that reportedly boasts 34 (!) culinary degrees. The second season of Top Chef begins on Wednesday, October 19th at 10P on Bravo.
Getting Social
There’s just something very, very cool about Social House. The newest venture from PURE Management Group <http://www.purelv.com/> , and their very first restaurant, was built with two goals in mind: to service the industry locals just as much as the tourists and to provide a late-night venue in which to find great fare in a fun and cool environment. Right off the bat, Social House is achieving those goals already. With former Nobu disciple and star-in-waiting Joe Elevado as its executive chef, Social House certainly provides an amazing menu that highlights both cooked and prepared entrees, as well a large sushi list. Social House gives Elevado the perfect platform for which to show off his unique blend of Nobu classic techniques, with new school flavors and ingredients that show a certain nod to his Filipino heritage. We would’ve liked to have seen a larger list of original sushi roles, but Elevado more than makes up for it with dishes like Shima Aji with Social House Salsa, Garlic Oil Seared Kobe and Tamarind Short Ribs.
The layout of Social House is another treat, especially for those who once gazed upon the pirate village of Treasure Island and wondered what was behind the walls. The restaurant boasts three bars (you can eat at all of them) and a sushi bar as well as a fourth bar and small lounge on the ground level greeting patrons at the entrance. The balcony is another high point. Directly above the Tangerine Nightclub patio, it overlooks the Strip and Treasure Island lagoon providing a bird’s-eye view of the Sirens of TI water show below. Another neat feature is the 30-person private dining room, which used to serve as Steve Wynn’s office back when the casino executive held residence at Treasure Island.
Since PURE Management Group’s roots are of the nightlife variety, it’s not surprising that the Social House beverage program is another highpoint. Yes, bottle service remains, although it’s surely not the focus, instead giving way to a sake collection that includes over 100 different selections, a list that will continue to grow in coming months as management has vowed to house the largest sake collection on the Strip. It’s not all sake though, as the Social House Specialty Cocktail list also contains some real gems. We wanted an expert opinion on some of the cocktails so we invited acclaimed Master Mixologist Tony Abou Ganim to join us for some sampling, and wow does he know his stuff. Make sure to try the ‘Tequila Moon’ which is particularly fantastic since watermelon is currently in season, the Ginger Saketini is a unique, creative and original cocktail that is sure to thrill. Rounding out the top three was the Lycheetini, a lychee inspired delight. After dinner you also have to try the infused sakes… the watermelon flavor stood out for us, confirming Abou Ganim’s comment about the current freshness of watermelon.
If you’re wondering what a nightlife company knows about operating a restaurant, ask the experienced and knowledgeable operators hired on by PMG like Wyn Pearson, former F&B director at Bellagio, and Mark Steele, former assistant GM at FIX <http://www.lightgroup.com/> (also at Bellagio). Add in Greg J’s past life as a restaurant operator and all the tools are in place to ensure great service is a regular part of any Social House meal. The wait staff compiled at Social House might look familiar as many faces from other happening restaurant ventures have joined on for the Social experience, including Matt, our formerly favorite waiter from Simon Kitchen & Bar <http://simonkitchen.com/> (Hard Rock Hotel).
It’s no wonder Social House has already caught on as a hot-spot for both locals who might hold untraditional dining hours and sushi fans looking for a cool and fun environment. Look for things to heat up even more at the end of the month when The MAIN Event returns to kick-off Open House, a new weekly Thursday promotion that will offer industry specials and provide locals with yet another Northern Strip party destination. Look for The MAIN Event and Open House to take stage on Thursday, September 28th. In the meantime, feel free to stop by and get social, you’ll thank us.
Going Gay
The Bay Area Reporter <http://www.ebar.com/> , a San Francisco media outlet directed at our gay and lesbian friends, ran an interesting story this weekend with the headline, ‘Las Vegas Bets on Gay Visitors.’ Author Ed Walsh starts by noting that although somewhat underground, Sin City has long been a favorite destination for gay travelers. The story added that increased marketing presence toward the gay community through focused brochures from the Las Vegas Convention Visitors Authority <http://www.visitlasvegas.com/vegas/index.jsp> and upcoming campaigns from both MGM Mirage <http://www.mgmmirage.com/> and Harrah’s Entertainment <http://www.harrahs.com/> . With the city’s first alternative lifestyle nightclub, Krave <http://www.krave.com.au/> , set to celebrate its two year anniversary, and the so-called “Fruit Loop” as busy as ever, it would seem as though Walsh is on to something.  Interestingly, the story also seemingly confirmed what we had been hearing for over a year now, that Harrah’s Entertainment has definite plans to increase marketing of Paris Las Vegas to the gay community. Already “gay getaway packages” include admission to Krave Nightclub, a short walk away, and the option of a same-sex marriage ceremony, something that MGM Mirage will also accommodate. Other shows and restaurants that were highlighted include Burger Bar (Mandalay Bay), Nob Hill (MGM Grand), Elton John’s Red Piano (Caesars Palace) and of course, Frank Marino’s An Evening at La Cage (Riveria).
Turning Triq

Forget pulling a rabbit out of his hat, magician Steve Wyrick has a bigger trick on the horizon. In November, he will be opening a brand new entertainment complex in the Miracle Mile Mall (Desert Passage Mall) at the Aladdin <http://www.aladdincasino.com/> (Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino) that will offer 33,000 square feet of fun with a brand new four-story showroom and nightlife driven ultra lounge. The concept will allow patrons to see a show, hang out in the lounge, grab a bite to eat or party it up bottle service style. First the showroom, Wyrick will be the headliner in his showroom with two shows nightly, but he won’t be alone as a major Filipino artist has signed on for a nightly show as well as a successful and unique off-Broadway concept that puts the caveman on center stage once Wyrick is done. Also signed on in the showroom is Ron Lucas, the former Rio daytime entertainer that has clearly been one of the most successful afternoon shows in recent history. The lounge will be open during the day to offer Lucas’ fans a place to relax and enjoy a cocktail either before or after the show. The complex will also include a small food-driven outlet that will capitalize on concession sales to all of the complex’s customers.
Once the sun goes down, Triq will focus on providing an alternative to Strip nightlife with an amazing venue and a clear-cut focus on customer service. Heading up nightlife at Triq will be tried and true nightlife pioneer Tony Verdugo who needs no more credentials after you mention he started the most successful after-hours party in the country at Drai’s over eight years ago. Verdugo, who is serving as director of nNightlife, is focusing on customer service by, “treating regular Joe’s like VIPs and VIPs like gods!”  There will be no cover for locals, discounted bottle prices for industry locals and even the soon-to-die-for ‘Too Hot to Pay’ cards for the clubs most beautiful female patrons which will exclude them from paying for anything, ever. “Some clubs open with a promise to take care of the locals but change their tune after they become successful, that will not be us,” Verdugo notes with conviction.

Updated Show Review: Lance Burton By Rick Garmen
Lance Burton recently celebrated his 10th year as a headliner at Monte Carlo <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/detail/montecarlo.htm>  and his show has gotten a bit of a makeover, with some new illusions added to spice things up. I was a bit worried going in, since I always enjoyed his show and didn’t want to see it changed too dramatically but I should’ve trusted the guy. He’s still funny, earthy, and full of an aw-shucks good nature that keeps his eye-popping illusions, both new and old, grounded and relatable for audiences of all ages and sophistications. With the exception of a video taped show opener involving a narrow “escape” from a roller coaster track, you won’t see any of what I call “whirling blades of death” style magic here. You know what I’m talking about… the type of illusions where the something sharp and supposedly dangerous is heading toward the magician as he struggles to get loose from chains and handcuffs. Will he escape? Of course he will. Everyone knows it and so the drama that may have been effective in more innocent times is all but lost.
You also won’t see any “stand and pose” style illusions. That’s where the guy in charge strikes some dramatic pose, usually with arms outstretched, while equally dramatic music makes us wonder if the elephant will really float or whatever.
No, what you see in Lance Burton’s show is a mixture of smaller, more personal magic – lots of birds appearing and people disappearing – and some larger set pieces that still impress without all of the showy theatrics. Burton will surprise you in a lot of ways, not the least of which is when you realize that a big-budget, traditional magic show in Vegas can still be entertaining.
Whether he’s doing something small (like changing a piece of crumpled up paper into a bird) or big (hey, where did the Corvette go?), Burton maintains his Kentucky kid level of enthusiasm and charm. He really seems to be enjoying what he’s doing and also seems to delight in the audience’s delight. It’s almost as if he’s saying, “I know! I just made a goose appear out of nowhere! Wasn’t that cool?”
Yes, it is cool.
The new illusions and revised set pieces are also quite good, including one that turns a woman into a gold statue version of herself. As with most of the rest of the show, these additions are understated yet still impressive, allowing the audience to suspend their disbelief instead of having it crammed down their throats.
Also of note is Burton’s supporting act Michael Goudeau, a comic-juggler who tosses everything from bowling balls to beanbag chairs with equal skill and more than a dash of goofy humor. He’s like that dopey uncle at your family reunion that you can’t help but be amused by, only this one is tossing around chainsaws so it’s even better.
One of the other great things about Burton’s show is the price. When I first reviewed the show in 1997 or 1998, tickets were $45-55. Now they are $60-72, which is shocking when you see some other entertainers who have doubled their ticket prices in the same amount of time. It’s also quite a bargain compared to the $100 and up prices you’ll pay at most of the shows in this town.
Instead of trying to keep up with the Dion’s and Blue Man’s, Burton has kept his show traditional, simple, and real. Now that’s what I call magic.

Las Vegas Q and A By Rick Garman
Question: We’re flying to Las Vegas next week and were wondering how the recent changes in airport security have affected the airport there.
Answer: Pretty much the same as airports everywhere – it was a big mess for a couple of days and now it seems to be calming down.
The day after British authorities foiled a plot to blow up US bound airliners, the TSA instituted new rules that disallowed all liquids from being brought on to airliners in carry-on luggage. Long delays in security screening were reported at airports across the country and McCarran International at Las Vegas was no exception.
The Las Vegas Review Journal reported wait times of up to four hours to get through security checkpoints and even though many flights were delayed a lot of passengers didn’t get to their gates on time.
Things seem to have calmed down since then but there are scattered reports of extra long screening times during peak travel hours.
My best advice is to arrive at McCarran for your departure about 90 minutes ahead of your flight (instead of the normal hour) if you’re traveling at a non-peak time and 2 hours if you’re going at rush hour. This may be overkill but better to be sitting around for awhile than miss your plane. Besides, they’ve got slot machines and video poker to keep you occupied while you wait.
And just in case you haven’t seen the list, this is what you’re not supposed to bring on planes in your carry on luggage: beverages, shampoo/conditioner, suntan lotion, cream, toothpaste, hair gel, and any other “items of similar consistency.” All of these things can go in checked luggage so put those leftover bottles of tequila in your suitcase.
Question: During our most recent visit to Vegas, my wife and I were amazed to find out that The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino had been razed. This got me thinking about all of the casinos on or near The Strip that have come and gone, even since my wife and I started frequenting the area. Casinos like Bourbon Street, The San Remo, O’Shea’s and The Westward Ho. I read a recent article that says The Stardust and The New Frontier are soon to follow.
I began searching the web for any maps that may point out the location of “classic” Vegas casinos. However, so far I have met with little success. I would love to have a map of, or at least know the placement of casino’s like the El Rancho as well as the casinos that were made legendary by the original movie “Ocean’s Eleven”, i.e. The Desert Inn, The Frontier, The Sands, The Dunes, etc. I am also interested to know where The Moulin Rouge was located, due to its history and affiliation with Joe Louis and Sammy Davis, Jr. Any information that you could share on this subject would be most appreciated.
Answer: I can’t provide you with a map specifically, but I can tell you where all of the casinos you mentioned used to be.
There were two El Rancho hotels. The first El Rancho <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/elrancho_1941.htm> , considered to be the first hotel on what would be The Strip, was located at the corner of Sahara and The Strip, across the street from what is now the Sahara <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/sahara.htm>  hotel. Yes, that big empty lot has been vacant since 1960 when the hotel burned down.
The second El Rancho <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/elrancho_1982.htm>  was originally known as The Thunderbird <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/thunderbird.htm>  from 1948 to 1977 and then the Silverbird from 1977 to 1982. It was remodeled and became a totally different El Rancho from 1982 to 1992 when it closed in bankruptcy. It was located just north of The Riviera <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/riviera.htm> , just south of the old Wet ‘n Wild site, and across the street from Circus Circus <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/circus.htm> . It is now an empty lot awaiting development.
The Desert Inn <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/desertinn.htm>  was located on the land now occupied by Wynn Las Vegas <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/detail/wynn.htm> . Actually, that’s only sort of true. Wynn itself actually sits further south than the old Desert Inn buildings, which were on the northern end of that property near the corner of Desert Inn Road and future site of the multi-billion dollar Encore at Wynn Las Vegas <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/upcoming.htm> .
The Sands <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/sands.htm>  was located on the land now occupied by The Venetian <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/detail/venetian.htm> . It’s iconic circular tower was almost directly opposite the entrance the main driveway entrance to The Mirage <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/detail/mirage.htm> .
The Bellagio <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/hotels/detail/bellagio.htm>  now occupies the land where the Dunes <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/dunes.htm>  used to reside and The Frontier <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/frontier.htm>  is still up and running (for now at least) just north of The Fashion Show Mall and just south of The Stardust <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/stardust.htm> .
Finally, Moulin Rouge <http://www.vegas4visitors.com/museum/moulin_rouge.htm>  was (and partially still is) located just west of Downtown. It closed in 1955 and was mostly destroyed by a fire a few years ago.

SHOW REVIEW: ‘Forever Plaid’

Square Rooting: ‘Plaid’s’ lads may not be that cool, but they’re worth cheering for.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
“Forever Plaid” lets you root for the underdog, onstage and off.
You won’t see any other Las Vegas showmen stricken by the almost simultaneous need for an asthma inhaler, milk of magnesia and something to plug a nosebleed.
hat’s the endearing appeal of the Four Plaids, the fictional 1950s harmony group that finds itself pulled down from the heavens for the big-time gig it always rehearsed for, but was denied by a fatal encounter with a busload of schoolgirls bound for a Beatles concert.

Imperial Palace Race & Sports Book Offers Entertaining Odds on “Dancing With the Stars”
Lay you odds that talk-show host Jerry Springer does not win “2006 Dancing with the Stars.”
No, really, there are odds. (This is Las Vegas. Enough said.)
The Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino set the line on Springer at 50-1 before last night’s season premiere of the ABC reality show. Initially predicting the former politician would finish dead last of the 11 contestants – despite being partnered with the former champion of Australia’s version of the show – Springer managed to outshine political pundit Tucker Carlson’s 25-1,who became the first celebrity participant scooted off the dance floor.
After last night’s first round, actor and TV host Mario Lopez held on as the IP favorite improving his 3-1 odds to 7-5; Vivica A. Fox improved from 4-1 to 7-2; Monique Coleman dropped from 5-1 to 15-1; Joey Lawrence inched up from 6-1 to 5-1; Harry Hamlin took a dive from 7-1 to 30-1; Willa Ford dropped from 9-1 to 20-1; Sara Evans slid from 10-1 to 15-1; Emmitt Smith skyrocketed from 15-1 to 7-2; and Shanna Moakler plummeted from 20-1 to 80-1.
“Dancing” odds are only for entertainment enjoyment – so don’t hoof it over to place any bets. Odds will be revised after each week’s contest, and the outcome on this playing field will be determined by viewer votes, not jump jive knack and know-how.

NORM: Producer quarreling with partner’s wife.
Frank Sinatra never allowed women in the Rat Pack. This might be why.
Dick Feeney, producer of “The Rat Pack Is Back,” issued a news release Saturday saying Lisa Dawn Miller, wife of “Rat Pack” co-producer and performer Sandy Hackett, has been barred from “all backstage areas, dressing rooms and offices” at the Greek Isles, the show site.
Feeney, who is Hackett’s partner, added that Miller is to be denied comps and is not allowed to act in any official or unofficial capacity as it pertains to his TRP Entertainment.
Reached at his office at the Greek Isles on Saturday night, Feeney characterized the dispute as a case of Miller being “the partner’s wife from hell.”
Feeney emphasized that he and Hackett, son of legendary comedian Buddy Hackett, “have no problems.”
Hackett has been playing Joey Bishop in the show since it opened in 2002
Miller and Hackett were traveling to Los Angeles and did not return telephone calls by deadline.
In a second e-mail to the media, Feeney called Miller an “amateur … with marginal talent” whose performing credits were either “favors or unpaid gigs.”
He scoffed at her CD “Fly Away,” saying it ranks 323,826th, according to LML Records, an online record company.
Feeney said by telephone that the “final straw” came when Miller expressed her support on a Web site for Bea Fogelman, who is attempting to challenge the legitimacy of trade names. Fogelman, who specializes in celebrity impersonators, is director of the Entertainment Network and a Las Vegas referral agency.
Miller is the daughter of Ron Miller, who wrote “For Once in My Life,” “Touch Me in the Morning,” “A Place in the Sun” and Celine Dion’s hit “If I Could.” He won a Grammy for Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” collaboration with Gladys Knight.

A BIG TRIQ

Illusionist Steve Wyrick has a special Triq up his sleeve: Included in his $34 million project for a new show at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood is an adjoining nightclub with an ultralounge.
The 27,000-square-foot Triq nightclub will also have a 6,000-square-foot Triq lounge.
“I wanted to do something out of the box: have a headliner put in a monster club,” said Wyrick, whose show, “Real Magic,” tentatively is set to open Nov. 6 in a new 500-seat theater.
“I feel like I’m bringing something different to the Strip. Guests can watch the show and go right into the nightclub, like Tao, where you eat and go to the nightclub.”
Tony Verdugo, who has made a name for himself as a late-night club operator, will run the Triq operation. He started Drai’s, Seven and Empire Ballroom.

NFL FOOTBALL: Don’t Be Alone.
Join other fans at a variety of bars across the valley.
By John Przyby/Las Vegas Review Journal
Ah, blessed autumn!
Falling temperatures. Leaves turning color, somewhere in the world if not exactly here. And, best of all, the return of real football.
The National Football League begins its regular season Thursday, which means it’s time for our annual list of bars that cater to fans of specific NFL teams.
The idea is to tell die-hard fans — you know who you are — where they can watch their favorite teams surrounded by fellow fans of their teams.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER: Winner has $6 million, wants rest.

Hearing delayed on lawsuit claiming he owes partner half.
By Adrienne Packer/Las Vegas Review Journal
World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold has been awarded half the prize pool for beating out more than 8,000 players in poker’s premier event last month, but he continues to challenge a lawsuit filed against him for the remaining prize money.
Gold’s legal team won a two-week delay in a federal court hearing Tuesday while the two sides continue to negotiate and prepare for trial.
British television producer Bruce Crispin Leyser took Gold to court, claiming the two entered a verbal agreement to share the $12 million in winnings, the single largest payout in the event’s history.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Amazing Johnathan creates new material for Comedy Central special.
The Amazing Johnathan says he didn’t go out of his way — well, except for a trip to New York — for a Comedy Central special that fell in his lap.
The comedian filmed an hourlong special last weekend at Manhattan’s historic Hudson Theater (now part of the Millennium Broadway Hotel).
“This is a huge deal. This is definitely going to bring in a new legion of fans,” he says.
The cable network keeps the comedian’s cruel brand of magic alive in reruns, but hasn’t talked to him about a new special since he moved to Las Vegas and became a resident headliner in 2001.

Feast on This! From “Lenny’s Las Vegas
September is the month of festivals and two of the best are right here in Las Vegas. Whether you’re Italian, Greek or anything else, ya gotta love the 27th Annual San Gennaro Feast (Sept. 12-17) and the Las Vegas Greek Food Festival (Sept. 21-24). The San Gennaro Feast this year promises to be bigger and better than ever with more Italian entertainment, food, music and carnival rides.
This huge party is expecting more than 150,000 attendees. The feast will be at 4245 Grand Canyon Dr. and West Flamingo Road in the Grand Canyon Shopping Center. On opening night, the 60 amusement rides, which include the 100-foot Ferris Wheel Fireball, Ring of Fire, Zipper, Kamakazee, Merry-Go-Round, Lolly Swing, Orient Express, Toon Town and the famed Crazy Train, are free, so you can’t complain about the price.
It’s also time for everyone to get in touch with their inner Greek, and there is only one place to do it — the 2006 Las Vegas Greek Food Festival. Located on the beautiful grounds of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at 5300 S. El Camino Road (corner of Hacienda between Jones and Torrey Pines), this festival has become a favorite in our town with plenty of great food and entertainment. Organizers promise that there will be more than enough of the mouth-watering lamb, souvlaki, gyros, pastitsio, loukaniko, calamari, tiropites, dolmathes, Greek salad and the amazing pastries.
Like years past, the festival will include continuous live music by two outstanding Greek bands: The Olympians and Fotia. In addition to the food and entertainment, the festival will include shopping in the Agora, featuring Greek gifts, art, clothing and jewelry. And to top it all off, there will be a raffle for a fully loaded Lexus SC430, featuring a retractable hard top. No matter which festival you can attend, you’re going to have a great time. Just wear loose clothing, because you’re going to be doing a lot of eating.

Slots Review by Gayle Mitchell

1) Bingo Nights Slotto: AC Coin, 2 spins. 87-92%
Bingo Nights is recognizable by the sphere atop the machine enclosing a group of lottery-style ball triggered during the bonus round. This sphere is used for bingo balls, in this case, along with the card.
Three bonus symbols will set the sphere in motion accompanied by the rockin’ sound of “Boogie Nights’.
Your bingo card will require a couple more numbers before Bingo! Your bonus reward will depend on the bingo balls that drop and can ‘reach the sky’ with 21,600 credits.
Double Diamond is the familiar wild icon utilized here and 1-4 of these icons will double the jackpot. Line up 5 of these classic symbols playing 180 coins and Bingo! the top jackpot of 100,000 is yours.
2) Elvis Multi Strike: IGT. 2 spins. 87%.
As Elvis slot lovers, these features will be familiar–Photo Memories Bonus with pix of our hero for Collect. Record Sales Bonus where we choose a record that produces a Silver, Gold or Platinum bonus reward.
Then there’s the Fan-O-Meter top box bonus wherein your Elvis song pick displays a film clip and a live performance by The King. The Meter cycles through a group of bonus bucks and multipliers and if the Encore level is reached, an additional prize amount is yours.
Additional features consist of three, 5-reel, 20-line separate screens that with a 300 coin max. bet will put you in the top jackpot qualifying round.
Line up the letters E-L-V-I-S on the first payline of the bottom reel set and you’ve scored a payout of 10,000 times the credits wagered.
The Rockin’ Re-Spin Bonus combines with Photo Memories and Record Sales to rack up additional credits from multipliers and wild symbols appearing during the round.
Elvis again brings fans a ‘Big Hunk O’ Love’ and Big Hits.
3) S&H Green Stamps: Bally. 2 spins. 86-96%
Nostalgia reigns as slot players are taken back to 1950’s and 60’s S&H Green Stamps catalogues.
Some of the symbols include pearl-adorned housewives and toasters.
Align 4 Saver Book symbols and move on to the Quick Saver bonus. Choose one of the books and align your reward from 10 to 500 times the line bet.
The stamp credits mount and can be traded for free games with the Save and Win Bonus as follows:
1 stamp book=5 free games at 10X normal pay and 100 bonus credits.
2 books=10 free games at 1-X and 250 bonus
3 books=15 free games at 10X and 450 bonus
4 books=20 free games at 10X and 700 bonus
5 books=25 free games at 10X and 1000 bonus.
Take this slot journey back in time where Green Stamps=Green Money.

How to Play Caribbean Stud by Bill Burton
The popularity of the Caribbean Stud has grown immensely over the last few years. It is a table game that also offers the player a chance to make a side bet to win a progressive jackpot. This has added to its appeal even if the odds of winning the big jackpot are around 649,000 to 1. The house edge for the main game is about 5 percent.
How To Play
Caribbean Stud is played on a blackjack-sized table. The game is based on poker and you should know the ranking of hands. You are playing against the dealer and your hand must beat the dealer’s hand. You do not have to worry about beating the other player’s hands.

From “Eye On Vegas”
Harrah’s Crashes Tea Party.
A tidy merger between two of Britain’s largest gaming companies was thrown for a loop last week when Harrah’s Entertainment <http://www.harrahs.com/> crashed the party with a premium offer to shareholders as the island nation nears a large-scale wave of gaming deregulation. Talks between London Clubs and their rival, Stanley Leisure, ceased after Harrah’s Entertainment’s offer, although counter proposals are expected. Britain’s new Gambling Act has opened the door for as many as 17 new casinos in upcoming years, including a “Las Vegas style mega casino,” which Harrah’s has expressed interest in operating. Harrah’s’ offer received the backing of the London Clubs’ board of directors which has had financial difficulties from several mismanaged and ill-advised projects, including a less than successful venture in Las Vegas. With Harrah’s cornered out of the lucrative Asian market for the time being, expect the gaming giant to continue a strong push for involvement in the British gaming market. Harrah’s’ European development honcho, Andrew Tottenham, noted that London Clubs International is extremely attractive to the company with plans for at least five new casino openings in United Kingdom cities such as Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham and London.
Just Loungin’
Fleur de Lys
(Mandalay Bay <http://www.mandalaybay.com/dining/restaurants.aspx> ) is easily one of our very favorite Las Vegas restaurants, although not for the reasons you might think. Renowned chef Hubert Keller’s brilliant French eatery refuses to be pretentious and continues to fight the snobbery, a bi-product of Keller’s affable personality and steeped history. The original Fleur de Lys in San Francisco was the country’s first French restaurant to have a gender integrated service staff, to print their menu in English and force their waiters to drop the tuxedos in favor of formal yet relaxed uniforms. Keller’s insistence on staying cutting edge has always permeated his Las Vegas outpost as well. The $5,000 FleurBurger, personal dining cabanas, and the city’s finest restaurant with a DJ booth all stand out as prime examples to our point. Fleur De Lys’ general manager, Tobias ‘The’ Peach, has upped the ante once again by introducing a brand-new lounge menu to the upscale eatery. While lounge entrees like the Salmon Ravioli might be typical Keller fare, ultra-mini Angus Sliders with fingerling potato fries and three flavors of freshly popped popcorn (smoked Jalapeno with fresh bacon bits, Truffled and Parmesan Paprika if you’re wondering) are wonderful forays into the untraditional. If you want to enjoy a hearty meal, do it justice and dine in the dining room, for a quick snack or some fare to accompany a drink, you have to check out this lounge menu.
Got Culture?
On Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th, the Nevada Opera Theatre’s ‘Opera Festival’ will prove once again that there is culture in Las Vegas when they set-up shop at MonteLago Village’s floating stage. These FREE performances will start at 7:30P each night and will feature several local performers as well as some internationally known talent. Performers include Dr. Morton I. Hyson (bass), Dan Quintana (baritone) and Stephen Plummer (tenor), internationally-renown Russian soprano Viktoria Kurbatskaya and two-time Grammy nominee Demetra George of Los Angeles.
