NORM: Changes may be a-coming in LV.
Big changes are coming from Harrah’s, a name that may soon be all but disappearing.
Spies close to the weekend meetings of Harrah’s brand managers and governmental relations brass at the Flamingo say it’s highly likely that:
• Harrah’s corporate name will switch to Caesars, because of the international strength of Caesars’ brand.
• Bally’s will be rebranded as Horseshoe.
• There’s a good chance a center Strip pedestrian retail, restaurant and entertainment environment will be created from the corner of Flamingo Road to the south end of The Venetian.
On Harrah’s entertainment side, don’t be surprised to see headliner deals announced soon, with Prince and Chris Tucker.

however, don’t have TV cameras tracking their progress.
Unlike Rob Mariano, who with wife (and fellow reality-TV star) Amber has moved to Las Vegas for “Rob and Amber: Against the Odds.”
The Fox Reality channel series began production last week, according to executive producer Linda Ellman, who oversees the show with fellow executive producers Rob George and Christopher Meindl.
While Mariano learns the game from poker ace Dan Negreanu, Ellman says, “Amber’s got a whole bunch of projects” — the initial one involving the set-up of the couple’s Las Vegas apartment to surprise her husband.

The Riviera has brought back the dinner buffet featuring action stations and five themed stations: Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Bar-B-Que and “Made In America.” New to the buffet is a free draft beer or a tangy margarita. Cost is $14.99 plus tax and gratuity.
The Riviera also has started an outdoor Country and Western impersonator show complete with barbecue steak dinners and all the trimmings that takes place every Wednesday through Nov. 15. Tickets for the Riviera Barbecue Steak Dinner and All American Show are $60.72; call 702-794-9433.
“LVM2Go” is a brand new bi-weekly, free tourist digest-size guide from the Greenspun Media Group that debuted last weekend. The new handy Las Vegas magazine features current and noteworthy happenings, attractions, dining, entertainment, nightlife, shopping, maps (city, Strip and downtown) and more.
It’s official. Elvis Presley is back in the building. The long-rumored Cirque du Soleil Elvis show will become a reality when CityCenter, the multi-billion-dollar monster MGM project on the Strip opens in November 2009. Robert F.X. Sillerman, chairman and CEO of CKX, the company that controls Elvis-related projects said, “I am pleased that during this time, when we remember Elvis Presley and celebrate his life, we are able to announce his return to Las Vegas, a place where he truly rose to iconic status. This will be the first step in establishing a 21st century presence in Vegas for the King.”

Jessica Simpson has won one of her first divorce battles with Nick Lachey. I hear she’s going to end up with the 1,200-square-foot condo at Palms Place, which opens in early 2008.
Ya think Paris Hilton might have some ’splainin’ to do? After getting paid oodles for her steamy, skin-baring Carl’s Jr. commercial, she blamed her DUI charge on being in a rush to get an In-N-Out burger.
The Four Seasons at Mandalay Bay, it seems, is promoting itself for having the Strip’s only kosher kitchen, with a rabbi on site to make sure food served passes muster. Word is everything kosher is flown in from New York City or Los Angeles. And it’s tougher to run than you’d think, as was the case with executive chef Michael Goodman’s search for kosher balsamic vinegar. And then there’s the really tough crowd: Californians demanding organic kosher only. Insiders say it’s a big draw, but that might be an overstatement with only about 5,000 meals served a year.

These are the best of times and worst of times for the workers at the Stardust. While Boyd Gaming Corp. announced last week the hotel-casino will close Nov. 1 to make way for the $4 billion Echelon Place, the company has also given workers nearly a year’s notice, since January, to settle into new jobs. Of the 900 nonunion, unprotected workers, half wanted to stay with Boyd, and most of them have changed positions or are in the process. Most of the rest are retiring or changing professions. A union leader called the program unprecedented. Why Nov. 1? Insiders said it is too hard to staff the joint while Boyd Gaming operates its private sector placement program to keep as many workers in jobs as possible.

You know you’ve made it to the Big Top when you’re featured in crossword puzzles. Local developer Steve Wynn recently went bicoastal when he made it in the Los Angeles Times puzzle. Clue: “A Wynn in Las Vegas.” Answer” “Steve.” He’d already made it in The New York Times’ puzzle, several years ago, in fact.

Vegas TV, formerly the UPN affiliate KTUD-TV, launches Monday on Cable 14 and Channel 25. The independent station will focus on family-friendly content, including weekly broadcasts of high school football games and “Smooth Vegas Knights,” a half-hour variety show hosted by Smooth “C” Knight.
The Stardust has confirmed that Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme will bring down the curtain on its historic showroom on Oct. 28. The duo had the same dubious honor of closing down the Circus Maximus showroom at Caesars Palace in September 2000.
Rick Thomas and Gerry McCambridge, “The Mentalist,” two shows at The Stardust will close on October 25th.
It looks as though Steve Connolly’s Elvis Presley tribute will remain downtown at Fitzgeralds, but move from 7 to 10:30 p.m. starting Sept. 28 to make room for “Bottom’s Up,” the burlesque revue that was originally going to replace it. Connolly’s last 7 p.m. performance is Sept. 25.
Downtown might also see the reawakening of the moribund showroom at The Plaza next month. At least two producers have been negotiating for a “four-wall” deal to use the room without the casino’s financial backing.
Look for two good coupons in today’s LV Review-Journal. The first is for a free entree at Yolie’s Brazilian Steakhouse on Paradise Rd. when you bring three paying customers. The second is a twofer for the interactive dinner show Marriage can be Murder at the Egg & I restaurant on West Sahara.

Nightclub Crawl By Rick Garman
It’s interesting to see the evolution of nightclubs in Las Vegas as they, like much of everything else in this town, move ever more upscale and fancy. I got the chance to hit a few new ones recently and here’s what I thought. Cherry at Red Rock Resort
The latest from Rande Gerber (husband of Cindy Crawford and mastermind of Whiskey at Green Valley Ranch) is now officially my favorite club in Las Vegas. You enter through a delirious red-lit space portal-like tube and find yourself in the center of a circular, futuristic, high-energy club. A big bar dominates the center of the space with VIP booths ringing the edges and a decent size dance floor ready for you to get your groove on.
But that’s not all there is to the club. Head through the back door and you’ll find an outdoor annex, complete with its own bar, lounge chairs, VIP cabanas, more music, and even it’s own pool. It’s a stunning area and a perfect place to catch your breath in between partying stints inside.
The primary reason I like the place are the relatively reasonable prices (cover charge is $20 but drinks are a bit cheaper than what you’ll find on The Strip) and the less attitudinal staff and clientele. Since the club is located on the far west side of town, you have a lot more locals here and although they can party just as hard as the visitors on The Strip, they seem to have a more genial attitude about the whole thing.

Pool club also open weekends from 11am-6pm
Lucky Bar at Red Rock Resort
That Rande Gerber is a busy guy. With Whiskey and Drop Bar at Green Valley Ranch and Cherry here at Red Rock, plus being married to Cindy Crawford, you wouldn’t think he’d have time for another one but he does with Lucky Bar in the center of the casino.
Much like Drop Bar at Green Valley, Lucky Bar takes the concept of casino lounge and makes it hip and modern with a low-slung, moody atmosphere (lots of leather and velvet couches, tons of crystal chandeliers) and an anything-can-happen vibe. Daytimes are fairly sedate but at night the place comes alive with a mostly local, mostly young, mostly male crowd grooving to the bass-pounding beats despite the lack of a formal dance floor.
It’s a fun place but since it’s small and partially open to the casino you’ll have to be seriously entertained by the company you keep and not afraid of people watching you have a good time.

Jet at The Mirage
The Mirage was one of the last to come to the high-energy nightclub scene on The Strip but maybe that’s a good thing since it appears they took what was successful at other places and mixed it together for a winner in their own place.
The club is done by the same people who do Light at Bellagio and the pedigree shows. Although certainly a party spot, Jet doesn’t give off the kind of desperate, “I just want to get drunk and find people to take back to my room” vibe that some other nightclubs do. It’s more adult and sophisticated but still fun the way a dance place should be.
The room is divided into three sections with three distinct vibes. One of the rooms features house music in an ultra-lounge style environment while a second room is heavy on the hip-hop beats in a similar atmosphere. The main room, with its big dance floor, multiple bars, plenty of VIP booths, and great lighting and sound system is more mainstream, playing pop, hip-hop, dance, and more from all eras.
As with most clubs its expensive ($30 for guys, $20 for women at the door plus high drink prices) but if you’re going to spend that kind of money this is a place I could actually recommend you doing it.

Las Vegas Q and A by Rick Garman
Question: I’m a big time buff of thrill rides. What are the best in Las Vegas?
Answer: My attitude on thrill rides, in general, goes something like this: “You go have fun, I’ll be in the bar.” Yes, I’m a chicken and happy to admit it.
But I have done a few of the thrilling things Vegas has to offer and for the rest I depend on the kindness of friends who actually enjoy these kinds of things to fill me in on the rest.
The ones that I’ve done that I like are centered around motor sports. I love the Richard Petty Driving Experience at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where you can take a real Nextel Cup stock car onto the big oval for a few laps of insanely high-speed thrills. It’s expensive but totally worth it.
I also really liked The Drive, the glorified General Motors showroom in a parking lot behind The Sahara. You get to take your pick of Hummers or 4-wheel vehicles for the off-road course and Corvettes and other souped up rides for the short race course. It’s more fun than it should be and they don’t actually try to sell you a car so you don’t need to worry about outrunning salesmen.
The last driving related thing I enjoyed was the Cyber Speedway at The Sahara, a virtual reality version of racing that was fun until it made me kind of nauseous like most VR rides do.
Of the more extreme thrill rides, my crazy friends tell me that Insanity and the Big Shot at the top of the Stratosphere Tower are unlike anything you’ll experience anywhere in the world and that the Manhattan Express Roller Coaster is the best one in Vegas.
Question: Can you tell me about some of the new hotels that are being planned for Las Vegas? Answer: I sure can, Lianne. In fact, we have an entire page on Vegas4Visitors.com dedicated to keeping you up to date on what’s in store for Sin City. The one closest to opening is Planet Hollywood, although to be fair it isn’t a “new hotel” in the sense that it is being built from scratch. Instead it is the Aladdin hotel with a major remodel currently underway that will transform the Arabian Nights into a sleek and posh Hollywood glamour theme. Expect that to have a grand re-opening in early 2007. Palazzo is the new sister hotel to The Venetian, a 3,000-room property with its own casino, shopping, restaurants, and parking. It is currently heavily into construction and is expected to open in 2007. Trump International is Donald Trump’s first serious Vegas foray and although it won’t have a casino it will have more than 1,600 hotel and hotel/condo units. It’s under construction right behind The New Frontier near The Fashion Show Mall. It is expected to open in late 2007. The Cosmopolitan/Hyatt is just beginning construction on an oddly shaped bit of land just south of Bellagio, more or less surrounding the Jockey Club time shares. It will feature more than 3,000 hotel and condo units, a casino, entertainment, shopping, and more. It is currently scheduled to open in 2008. Encore is the sequel to Steve Wynn’s most expensive hotel in the world, Wynn Las Vegas. It had a ground-breaking recently and when complete will feature 2,000 rooms and its own casino, showrooms, and entertainment facilities. It will be open in late 2008 if all goes according to plan. Project CityCenter is a $7 billion complex of hotels, condominiums, shopping, entertainment, and casino space going up on more than 60 acres between Bellagio and Monte Carlo. It is being called the largest privately financed construction project in history and will open in 2010. Echelon Place is the name giving to the equally massive, $4 billion complex of hotels that will replace the Stardust on the north end of The Strip. It has not started construction yet but is scheduled to open in 2010. There are a few other projects that have been bandied about for The Strip that aren’t quite the done deals that the ones listed above are. You can read more about them and new hotels scheduled for off The Strip on our Upcoming Hotels page on Vegas4Visitors.com.

What a surprise, more like shock, when this reporter had the opportunity as an invited guest to experience The Café at Monte Carlo, which has been completely remodeled. The 320-seat eatery, which had a coffee shop appearance, was closed on July 17 and reopened on Aug. 18 with a new sophisticated and dramatic look and menu. The new interior with rich woods and faux-mink-like tables took six months to design and the outcome can compete in the gourmet-dining arena.
The Café is open 24 hours everyday and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable prices. My privileged group got to try many dishes including our starters… chicken fingers, spicy Thai honey chicken wings, shrimp cocktail, tandori beef skewers, and chili verde, followed by individual main dishes and three desserts. Every food dish was impeccably prepared and worth ordering. This restaurant is excellent.

CineVegas features world film premieres, honorees celebrities and holds panel discussions with renowned filmmakers, writers and talent. At night, the festival hosts nine nights of parties.
Renowned comic magician and Sahara Congo Room headliner Amazing Johnathan filmed a one-hour special in New York City for Comedy Central on Sept. 1. The show entitled “Wrong on Every Level” was filmed for television broadcast later this fall and a second “uncensored” taping was done and will only be released by Comedy Central on DVD.
Not only is Johnathan one of Comedy Central’s top five most downloaded performers on iTunes, he is also a veteran of three previous highly acclaimed appearances with the network.
The special includes a video segment that features Johnathan’s twisted version of “street magic” with illusionist Criss Angel and comedian Carrot Top taking part in the mayhem.
I recently had the privilege of a private breakfast and tour of the Signature at MGM Grand, a luxury all-suite, non-gaming and non-smoking hotel. It’s a spectacular place with a private gated entry and 24-hour, all-valet parking. Each suite is privately owned and can be used or lived in by the owner or put into the hotel pool. However, the suite’s decor cannot be altered by the owner if they want to be able to rent it.
The Signature at MGM Grand is comprised of three 576-suite adjacent towers, each with luxurious junior, one-and two-bedroom suites ranging in size from 550 to 1,500 square feet and only 16 units per floor. Tower 1 made its debut this past June. Tower 2 will open in November and Tower 3 next May. The Signature is entirely private even though it is connected to the MGM Grand and all that the mega-resort has to offer.
Each custom-furnished suite features a deluxe king-size bed with 300-thread count, Egyptian cotton Anichini sheets and a plush down comforter. Marble and granite bathrooms offer dual-sink vanities and Jacuzzi-brand whirlpool tubs. Top-of-the-line appliances are located in each kitchen or kitchenette. The state-of-the-art technology includes high-definition, flat-screen televisions; high-speed wireless Internet service; DVD/CD players; and iHome clock radios for iPods. Most suites have balconies.
Hotel amenities include private, heated outdoor pools and cabanas, Lobby Lounge, retail shopping, fitness centers, Starbucks’ coffee shop and a delicatessen. There’s a Business Center, Executive Board Rooms, and flexible meeting space for small groups.
The flawless guest service really sets the place apart and makes it upper class. There’s 24-hour concierge service and in-suite dining.
The world’s finest and most complete original Wurlitzer jukebox collection is for sale for $250,000 at The Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace. The 24 antique machines are housed in a variety of ornate wood cabinets, play either 45s or 78s or both and work on 110 volts. They range in vintage from a 1934 countertop model 51 with stand to a 1948 model 1100 Chapel.
The Wurlitzers include several extremely rare machines including a 1939 model 500A; a 1941 model 850 Peacock upon which only 1,530 records have been played; a 1941 model 850A Tulip; a 1946 model 1015 Ambassador; a 1946 model 1015 Bubbler, the most popular jukebox ever built; and a 1947 model 1080 Harpe.
An additional 26 jukeboxes, including Seeburgs, Rock-Olas, Packards and AMIs, will be sold individually, with prices ranging between $10,000 and $20,000. Among these vintage pieces is a 1939 Mills Express previously owned by the late actor Steve McQueen.
The jukeboxes are nestled among the classic cars at The Auto Collections because they belong to an avid car collector in Switzerland who has spent the past 20 years gathering each piece for his set.

Scrounging In Bellagio’s Basement: Touring Bellagio’s Back Of The House. By Hunter Hillegas
Thanks to one of my readers who, for now, will remain anonymous, I was able to take a tour of the back of house areas at Bellagio.
This includes service kitchens for the restaurants, lake pump equipment, soda and liquor distribution, uniform cleaning and control, security, IT and much, much more.
I even saw the room where they put the bad people before Metro grabs ‘em!
All that plus the VIP elevators and villa areas (sadly not the villas themselves) and other guest areas.
I left with am impression that Bellagio is a one of a kind masterpiece. If you want to read this very long entry, continue on after the jump.
Touring Bellagio’s back of house areas was easily one of the most interesting things I’ve done in as long as I can remember. When you’re on the casino floor it is difficult to realize just how massive the underground area really is – it’s bigger than the casino itself. We took the doors near the pool area and headed down.
Access to most of the facilities is through this central passage where a very long ramp heads down into the basement. The colors and designs are just like the casino itself – this area could easily pass as a convention area or something similar. Everything is very well done and nicely put together. There are overhead televisions running MGM MIRAGE TV, a loop of information for company employees running through details about important dates, department info, etc…
The employee entrance from Frank Sinatra is on one far end and then the passage heads all the way to the front of the property, ending where the lake would begin. That’s quite a lot of ground to cover and I can easily see getting lost. Many folks have seen the remake of Ocean’s 11 which features some scenes of a supposed Bellagio. Well, the ‘vault’ scenes are clearly ludicrous but some of the other scenes of them walking through pale yellow hallways are very close.
On this main passage you see many departments like payroll, HR, etc… Many appear as offices on either side of the hall. Some other departments open up into large rooms such as uniform control, where folks go to get their uniforms cleaned. This area looks like a huge dry cleaning outfit with everything mechanized, etc…
The employee dining room is called ‘Mangia’ and it looks a lot like the buffet upstairs. Supposedly the food is excellent and it is all free for employees. I didn’t try it but the food certainly looked good and pretty fresh. Certainly one of the best employee dining rooms I’ve seen in any business. From what I am told, Steve Wynn used to eat at the employee dining room on a regular basis when he was a Mirage Resorts executive.
We also passed the satellite cage, right below the main cage. Nothing like the vault in Ocean’s but still looking fairly secure.
Looking at all of the posters, papers and announcements on the walls, it is clear that the excellent service at Bellagio is no accident. Employees are constantly reminded how to provide an excellent guest experience.
Some longer time Vegas aficionados may remember the North Valet at Bellagio. Closed after 9/11 due to terror concerns, this underground garage is now used exclusively for valet parking. Apparently Bellagio has valet parking for every room in the building – a major number for such a large complex.
When asking about other back-of-house areas, I’m told that Bellagio is by far the nicest, even better than Wynn Las Vegas. The Mirage and Treasure Island are supposedly fairly unimpressive in that department where WLV hasn’t painted the walls, sticking with concrete colors. The walls under Bellagio are finished just as they are upstairs – pretty impressive.
Jumping in a service elevator, we took a look at some other guest areas.
First stop was the villa floor, just above the casino. In case you’re wondering, no, we didn’t go into any of the villas. Still, it was clear from the hallways that this is a swanky part of time. The walls are finished in fine fabrics and very subdued colors. I wanted to get a picture in front of ‘Villa 1′ but I didn’t have my camera. To get an idea, there are 150 rooms on a normal Bellagio floor. There are 14 villas and related rooms on this floor. These things are BIG. One detail I thought interesting – Bellagio is monograming the pillows in the villas.
The villas are usually accessed via private elevator from the VIP Services area just off the lobby. These also send guests to the 36th floor Penthouses. What I thought was funny was that the main guest elevators also stopped at the villas – I’m told that this route is rarely used. The VIP elevators are also quite done up, much nicer than the standard elevators.
From the 3rd floor we went up to 36. Like Treasure Island, this floor has extra high ceilings. While many of the suites haven’t been redone yet, the hallways have been. Suite renovation is planned but has not yet started.
From what I have been told, things have tightened up a good bit more since Bill McBeath is on board. After Wynn left, service got a bit lax but now things are supposedly back on track.
As we continued on our tour there were some other interesting areas we came across.
Besides passing rooms full of lake pump equipment, we also saw a room dedicated to pumping liquor out to all the bars in the building. This room was amazing! Bottles and bottles of top flight liquor, all attached to pump equipment. You’d hear the air push every couple of seconds, each time a shot left the building. The spot next door did the same thing for soda but the liquor was the interesting part.
The Bellagio security room is unmarked but interestingly enough, if you stand in front of it, they open the door to ask you what you want. True enough, we paused in front of the door for a second and then as we continued down the hall, I heard the door open and then close.
Beyond that there was also a huge amount of IT and telecom gear in classic data center looking rooms. Some of the server racks even had Bellagio logo stickers. Neat.
The tour continued for the better part of 90 minutes and included the Spa Tower guest rooms and the spa itself – that thing is very, very nice.
One of the last stops was a glimpse of the room where they hold folks before Metro can come and pick them up – a stark room with handcuffs attached to the chair. Not a spot you want to be.
I really, really enjoyed this tour. It was amazing to see a real, working casino from this perspective. Also, it was amazing to see how much there was. Bellagio is truly a mini-city that looks virtually self-sustaining.
Some elements of the service were impressive. The chairs for Prime are removed from the restaurant each day and reviewed by the manager to ensure only ‘good’ chairs go on the floor. It’s stuff like this that gives Bellagio the 5 diamonds.
Thanks again to the employee that went out of their way to do this and gave up time on a Sunday. It was very nice of you and hey, I’d love to do it again sometime!
I’m tired but I’m sure you’ll have questions so I’ll do my best to answer them as soon as I can. Hope this was interesting. There’s no way that I can explain how great it was but I did my best.

The unpretentious Detroit native began learning magic at age seven when a magician who was a police officer used magic to teach safety with red, yellow and green balls representing a traffic light. He was impressed. That’s when he knew what career path he wanted to take in life. Even though he’s one of the best watch thieves you will ever witness his most entertaining talent is hosting “V” with his comical barbs and lightning tongue.
Jeff’s honed his act like a star with a little bit of the late Paul Lynde and the fancy clothes a la Liberace. He’s the perfect warm-up for the acts that he introduces: Drummer Doug De Forrest, Juggler Wally Eastwood, Magician Jason Byrne, Gymnasts Iouri & Nikolai, Tino Ferreira and Kathleen Larible and Joe Trammel “The TV Guy” and the reality comedy of Russ Merlin.
On Sept. 21, Jeff is heading to the United Kingdom for five days to perform at The International Brotherhood of Magicians. The society has 20,000-25,000 members worldwide. We’re expecting 1,000-1,200 to attend. Fellow “V” performer juggler Wally Eastwood will be also performing with him at a show called “WOW!’ in London’s West End on Sept. 24th. It’s a benefit performance for the London subway bombing victims.
Jeff recalled, “By the time I was 11 years old, I did my first live performance and by age 12 I was getting paid for doing birthday parties and family shows. I met Lance Burton, Mac King and Kevin James at age 14 in Colon, Michigan at Abbott’s Magic Get-Together. Colon has a population of about 2,000 people so the convention doubled the town’s size. It’s in the lower bowel of Michigan. The first big magician that I saw perform live was Harry Blackstone Jr.”
Jeff said, “I was born on March 23, 1962. I graduated from Lutheran High East in Harper Woods, Michigan. I was the class clown and did all those impressions of Richard Nixon and so forth. At age 17, I was making more money than my father was working full-time. I was doing shows so I didn’t have to go to college. He was a tool-and-die maker and made a decent wage. I had a teacher offer to pay my way through college but turned it down.”
Jeff Hobson has opened for some big headliners as follows: Lee Greenwood, Barbara Mandrel, Louise Mandrel, Phyllis Diller, David Sanborn, Steve Allen and Roy Clark and many more.
Jeff said, “I came to Las Vegas to perform at `Catch A Rising Star’ at Bally’s in the late ‘80s and by ’91 I was headlining the show, Producer Dick Foster noticed me and invited me to join `Spellbound’ at Harrah’s. My wife and I were only married for about six months and she was a mechanical engineer at Ford Motor Co. We moved to Las Vegas and she became a homemaker and mother of three children. They are ages 8, 10 and 12. The eight-year-old daughter is a ham. The 10-year-old is funny too. The oldest is quiet and disciplined and will either be an airline pilot or go into the military.”
He continued, “I tried doing my own show but it’s tough without the right circumstances. The location was bad, the ticket brokers weren’t getting enough commission, the hotel wasn’t that great, plus the clientele wasn’t my demographics. It was a great showroom but we should have seen this one coming. It’s the 40s and 50s hip crowd that really likes my act. “V” is the perfect place for me. It’s good for Las Vegas since variety shows have been neglected for a long time. We’re right around our four-year anniversary. This is a powerful show and the audiences love it. It appeals to everyone. This is a good show to have a good belly-laugh. We are on so many different levels with the human element. We don’t use all those special effects. It’s a people show. I want people to remember the humor. Comedy is a heck of a lot harder then law school. I get people to participate on-stage. It’s one of the biggest fears in the world to audience members but they end up having fun and always remember it and will talk about it for life. I love the challenge and especially like the people who don’t speak English. I’m visual so they understand what I do and say.”
“V – The Ultimate Variety Show” runs seven nights a week at 7:30 and 9 p.m. For tickets or show information call (702) 932-1818 or see www.VTHEShow.com. E Entertainment Network calls it “A must-see show for the entire family.” Jeff Hobson’s web site is JeffHobson.com.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Wyrick to court fame again.
Steve Wyrick has heard most of the rumors about himself, but was a bit taken aback by the latest one: The lounge in his new entertainment complex would feature a life-sized statue of the magician with laser beams shooting out from its eyes.
That’s the kind of bad taste and ego that many expect from Wyrick, who taunts his critics in Las Vegas with his refusal to fail and/or simply disappear.
It looks as though he is about to disappoint them again.

NORM: Minnelli misses event at MGM.
Liza Minnelli’s ugly divorce is raising questions about the status of her long-awaited return to Las Vegas.
Minnelli’s no-show at a gay gala Saturday night at the MGM Grand had to cause concern at the Luxor, which has her booked for Oct. 12-14.
Her absence from the inaugural Human Rights Campaign event came a day after her estranged husband, David Gest, a music producer, accused her of infecting him with a sexually transmitted disease.
Those charges came after Minnelli filed papers alleging that Gest was trying to poison her with drugs.
Minnelli was to be the keynote speaker and recipient of the HRC’s National Equality Award for her support of gays and lesbians.
Comedian Louie Anderson was summoned to fill in with female impersonator Frank Marino.
Attendees said it was announced during the gala that Minnelli was in Europe and could not make it back in time.
Local organizers of the event did not return calls by deadline.
MGM Mirage spokeswoman Erin Randell said Minnelli’s October dates were still on as of Monday.
Minnelli, 60, has not had a Las Vegas run in decades. Interest in her Luxor appearance was so strong that several shows were added.

RAT PACK RANCOR
Dick Feeney, co-producer of “The Rat Pack Is Back,” probably won’t be garnering any Boss of the Year nominations.
In recent weeks, he has publicly slammed Lisa Dawn Miller, the wife of his co-producer, Sandy Hackett, and his musical director, Jeff Greenberg, who quit last month.
Greenberg, the musical director since 2002, sent an e-mail to me Monday saying he received his final paycheck and discovered a new deduction category.
He was charged $100 for “unauthorized use of a microphone.”
It was a fine, said Greenberg, “because I announced my resignation onstage.”
Why the onstage resignation? Because of a pre-show argument, one of many, with Feeney, and “I knew he would make it look as if I was fired.”

Vegas Girl Kiss Leaves Eva Wanting More.
Eva Longoria has put boyfriend Tony Parker on notice: she’s interested in doing a bit of experimenting after sharing a passionate kiss with a female friend in Las Vegas.
“It was particularly shocking as I was not prepared for it,” the sexy star tells Britain’s News of The World. I met a girl in Vegas who I didn’t know liked me. We were hanging out with a bunch of friends and we were saying goodbye and she gave me a kiss.
“It was very surprising but very nice. There were tongues involved and it was definitely a real kiss which was soft and gentle and sweet.”
“I wish I had a full-on gay experience because I think women are beautiful creatures,” she adds. “They’re much more attractive naked than men and it sounds like fun. Maybe I’m just holding out for the future.”
