Second Cannery to come.
By Howard Stutz.

Operators of the Nevada Palace told state gaming regulators Thursday they will replace the Boulder Highway casino with a newer version of the Cannery, a North Las Vegas casino run by the same management group.

The Gaming Control Board granted preliminary approval of a corporate restructuring of Cannery Casino Resorts, which operates the Cannery and the Rampart Casino in Summerlin. As part of the restructuring, the Nevada Palace will fall under the same management team. The Nevada Gaming Commission will vote on the issue Sept. 21.

The $7 billion MGM Mirage CityCenter will take the Las Vegas pool party scene to new heights.

At 10 stories up, the swimming pool deck at The Harmon — a 400-room, 240-condominium lifestyle tower — will offer the highest pool party view on the Strip. It will be operated by The Light Group, according to information leaked from Wednesday’s unveiling for senior MGM Mirage management.

Also revealed, the names of the other residential towers:

• A 50-story condominium hotel tower located between Bellagio and the as-yet-unnamed 4,000-room gaming resort at CityCenter will be named VDARA.

• Rising from CityCenter’s retail district will be VEER, twin 37-story glass towers with 358 condominium residences each.

• The 400-room Mandarin Oriental hotel will be topped with 227 condominium residences known as the Residences at Mandarin Oriental.

We’re hearing rumors that newly ousted former NSYNC member Lance Bass is currently in development of a new ‘chart countdown show’ that would be based in Las Vegas. One source close to the story adds that the program is being produced for television, perhaps giving the former boy band’er new life as a VJ.

Paris Las Vegas has announced that tickets for the upcoming production of Mel Brooks’ Broadway hit, ‘The Producers,’ will go on sale in October. “Anticipating the brisk 2007 convention season in Las Vegas, we believe it is a benefit to open ‘The Producers’ after the holiday season.  This is a better alignment of the creative team’s schedule which includes the show’s creator, Mel Brooks,” says Michael Weaver, vice president of marketing at Paris Las Vegas.

It was announced last week that the Las Vegas Trolley will extend its routes to downtown Las Vegas, adding seven stops including the Las Vegas Premium Outlets, World Market Center, Plaza Hotel and Casino, Golden Nugget, Lady Luck, Fremont Hotel and Casino, and Neonopolis at the Fremont Street Experience. A one-time pass for the trolley costs $2.50 while an all-day pass costs $6.50. You mean, people want to get around Las Vegas for a reasonable price? Wow, what a novel theory, monofail executives take note.

Everyone and their mother knew when Don Marrandino took over the Flamingo Las Vegas that it was only a matter of time. With diva Toni Braxton already on property and wowing audiences, Marrandino has turned his attention to the aging hotel. An extensive room renovation will add a modern décor and technologically advanced amenities, like MP3 docking stations, to each of the rooms. “With Toni Braxton, edgy new guest rooms, and the best location on the Las Vegas Strip, the Flamingo is becoming more exciting and more fun,” said Don Marrandino, president of the legendary Las Vegas resort.  “The property has been a landmark for the past 60 years and now we are moving forward to take the resort into the future.  An aggressive room renovation project creates a contemporary and entertaining guest experience.”

SHOW REVIEW: Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha.

High Society: Hawaiian show band, Misalucha bring another fresh show to Strip.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal

Perhaps Steve and Eydie, Don Rickles and other aging Las Vegas performers should check out the way Society of Seven gets around the stage on those Segway pedestrian transporters. They might get a whole new lease on life on the Strip.

But it’s important to know that Society of Seven, or SOS to their fans, is using those newfangled scooters for a new bit based on the summer movie “Cars.” It’s a testament to the group’s noble effort to keep its show fresh, at least within the context of its old-Vegas ways.

The veteran Hawaiian show band seemed to arrive in Las Vegas a decade too late, bouncing around five casinos since 2001. Last month, they landed at the Flamingo for a run that — like last year’s stand at Bally’s — is smartly positioned in the afternoon to court the over-45 crowd, albeit with a higher ticket price than most of the afternoon competition.

IP’s Pizza Palace Serves “Pizza Red,” Innovative Non-Traditional Wine.

Yummm, pizza. Now, what to drink with it … Beer? No, could feel bloated. Traditional red wine? Nope, may be too heavy. Soft drink? Too plain. Water? Don’t even go there.

Come to the Pizza Palace at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino and order the latest thirst quencher to complement and enhance the flavor of delicious Italian baked pies: Pizza Red.

The Australian Pizza Wine Company, which launched Pizza Red in January, describes it as a non-traditional beverage with an “uncomplicated wine structure,” soft in taste, pronounced fruit flavors, light sweetness with a crisp dry finish, slightly “spritzy” and served chilled.

Pizza Red is available in two sizes: a convenient 375-milliliter bottle, enough for two glasses, and 750 milliliters, ideal to share with friends.

“Pizza Red is the newest spirit to enrich the dining experience of our Pizza Palace patrons,” said Tom Viskovich, director of food and beverage. “It was specifically developed to match the variety of flavors found in pizza – so the only question is, ‘what toppings do you want?’”

From “The Circut”

A source from within
Red Rock tells us of massive cuts in the ranks at the local Summerlin hotel and casino. In the last six weeks alone, four top ranking team member were exited including James LaFlamme, Corporate Vice President of Food & Beverage; Jeff DiVito, Corporate Vice President of Food & Beverage Development; Charlie Karagienakos, Corporate Director of Security; and Rick Clagett, Corporate Director of Surveillance. The property’s existing managers have been informed via memorandum that they are expected to cover these additional duties indefinitely. Additional cuts have included the cancellation of all go-go dancers in the lounges and bars and it is rumored that the DJs and bands are the next to go. With Lounge Manager Catherine Bingue-Hawkins leaving on an unrelated note to pursue her singing career, this does not bode well for the overall nightlife atmosphere of the casino which, according to our source, “is going towards becoming another Boulder Station.” Ouch.

Social House
is already gathering a devoted following and it hasn’t even been open a full week yet! Pure Management Group’s new asian-fusion restaurant at TI opened to the public on Thursday, August 31st. Their industry promotion
Late Night Social, which promises to continue catering to the discerning nightclub goers’ palate Tuesday through Saturday from 11 p.m. till 4 a.m. and beyond, hasn’t even officially started yet but is already keeping the crowd into the wee hours. DJ Javier Alba, most recently of Tabu Ultralounge, presides over the lounge from his little crows nest booth. Says one staff member, “If there are people there until 9 a.m., we’ll be open till 9 a.m.”

Following up on their recent multi-million dollar renovation, Rumjungle launches “Xotic” on Monday, September 18th, hosting Las Vegas’ most beautiful entertainers. All locals, industry workers, and tourists will be treated like VIP’s with sizzling drink specials, buy-one-get-one bottle service and hourly VIP bottle/table giveaways. All locals are free and groups of 10 or more sexy women receive a free bottle of liquor. KLUC’s Mr. B.O.B does a live remote with DJs OB-ONE and RTM spinning 80’s rock, mash-ups, R&B, and hip–hop. Check out the new balloon and light show!

Slot Reviews By Gayle Mitchell

1) Mistress of the Sea: Atronic. 3 spins. 86-94%
Prepare for an underwater adventure when three golden hands symbols trigger the Temple of Treasures and you are presented with a grid of sea treasures. Pick your bonus credits until Start Again, Collect with Next or Next Level appear. Start Again brings up a new screen for your selection while keeping aside previous picks. Collect with Next permits one more selection before the round ends. Next Level also brings up a new screen, but with higher bonuses. This option continues for three levels at which time you will have reached the tiptop bonus—the Treasury. The Collect pick will end all rounds during this adventure. During your journey, look for the wild moon symbol that will multiply the jackpot by eight if it appears on the fourth and second reel of a winning combination. The 3D graphics will ‘put you in the swim’ of slot playing excitement.

2) Aztec Temple MultiWay: IGT, 4 spins, 85-98%

Add this version to the list of slots where you bet reels instead of paylines. To explain, 3 right hand symbols in the middle row on the 15 symbol grid are active. Each five-coin bet activates one vertical row of symbols. Thereafter, each five-coin bet activates another row of symbols, multiplying the way to win by three. Therefore, a 25-coin bet activates all five reels allowing 243 win possibilities. Scatter pays up to 100 credits times your bet. The top jackpot with max coin in play is a big hit of 125,000 coins. The Temple Free Spin bonus occurs when gold medallions appear on the screen, at which time; you select one to collect bonus credits from free spins and a multiplier. You will surely find multi ways for multi wins with this exciting slot.

3) Agassi. Aristocrat. 2 spins. 92-93%
Of course, the wild symbol at this tennis themed slot is superstar Agassi along with the Wimbledon champion’s cup icon. You can feel oh so good about playing this graphically rich and multi-featured slot in that proceeds go to Agassi’s Foundation. There are 25 lines in this penny slot with a Grand Jackpot resetting at $1000 and a Major jackpot resetting at $116. It’s not necessary to bet max to win jackpots, however, be sure to activate all the paylines and bet an extra 10 coins for the ante wager. When scattered airplane symbols land on all five reels, the animation begins spelling out AGASSI and one of four bonus events begins. In Tennis Balls, the main screen displays a grid of tennis balls and the player is prompted to select until matching 2 bonus prizes. In Wild A, the player is awarded three free spins. During each free game, a letter A is placed in a random reel position. Each A subs for all other symbols including scatter pays and remains in position for the remaining free spins, thus the final free spin includes three wild symbols. In Choose a Stadium, the main screen shows four famous tennis stadiums, each of which has a number of free spins and multiplier values for the Agassi wild symbol. The player chooses their risk factor from five to twenty free games. The Jackpot Cards bonus game leads the player to one of the two progressive jackpots. The main screen asks you to select cards until matching two. At the first level, the cards hide either bonus amounts, the words LEVEL UP or the word MAJOR. Moving up means matching LEVEL UP cards whereupon matching two GRAND cards hits the top jackpot offering Game, Set and Match!

Imperial Palace Luau Fire-Knife Dancer Makes It Look Easy

Fo’i Tuitama plays with fire.
And knives.

And his parents are as proud as they can be.

Three nights every week, the 41-year-old Samoan performs the showstopping fire-knife dance in the Polynesian revue during the Imperial Hawaiian Luau at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino.

Tuitama estimates there’s no more than 100 fire-knife dancers in the entire world – and yes, he’s been burned, on his hand, face, neck and soles of his feet.

“Everyone must get burned – an initiation by fire – in order to respect fire,” he said. “Then they become better dancers.”

Tuitama is the first in his family to be a fire-knife dancer. When as a child he first saw it performed, he thought it was an amazing feat. He wanted to learn how, but at the time he could not find a teacher. So, he trained instead to be a high chief of his tribe, to follow in his father’s footsteps.

But destiny intervened and on a trip to Hawaii he saw the Polynesian Culture Center, the ultimate training center for Polynesian dancing but especially for the fire-knife. He moved to Hawaii and trained for five years before he was good enough to be a soloist.

“The fire-knife dance is the essence of manhood in entertainment in Samoan culture,” Tuitama said. “It is the epitome of what most Samoan men aspire to attain and only few succeed.”

Tuitama still practices daily with a “uatogi.” The knife was once a real weapon used for war in Samoa but the chiefs decided to make the uatogi a peace instrument to entertain the world. It takes stamina, endurance, gymnastic and athletic ability and, most of all, a strong desire and pride in the culture to make the fire-knife dance look easy to audiences at the Imperial Hawaiian Luau.

“And especially in Las Vegas in July, the heat really drains you, so you really have to love what you do,” he noted.

As if playing with knives wasn’t dangerous enough, Tuitama also eats fire, an ability to touch the fire to his tongue accomplished by psyching himself up, getting the adrenaline going and having an immense admiration for the history of the Samoan people. Only with years of tolerance can he touch the fire to his tongue – but on a few occasions he has burned his tongue and “can’t taste food for days.”

“You must respect fire under any condition, knowing how it can hurt you,” he said. “Any performance could be your last.” But Tuitama gives everything to the crowd to make sure they get the best show they can. Only high winds can stop the fire-knife dance from being the luau’s showstopper.

And will Tuitama’s four children follow in his footsteps? He won’t let his two girls learn the fire-knife dance, but his two sons are already on his path. His 19-year-old dances at parties, and when the 14-year-old goes off to college, he, too, will train at the Polynesian Culture Center in Hawaii.

And his grandparents will be as proud as they can be.

Lenny’s Las Vegas
By Len Butcher

Probably no-one hotter in the movie business these days than Johnny Depp, star of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. And whatever’s hot means it’s going to show up in our town. Madame Tussaud’s unveiled a wax figure of the star in his Capt. Jack Sparrow character this morning in the “Big Night” room at The Venetian.

The identical figure will also be unveiled today in Amsterdam, The Netherlands; London, England and New York City. The movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, opens in Las Vegas July 7.

THE KING IS BACK

It seems that Elvis has not left the building. Well, actually, he had, but he’s back again. At least the bronze statue of him has returned to its place of honor at the Las Vegas Hilton. The statue was officially dedicated at the resort on Friday, September 8, 1978, then temporarily removed while the lobby was undergoing renovation. It’s now on display in the hotel’s courtyard, located to the immediate right when you enter the front doors of the hotel.

Los Angeles sculptor Carl Romanelli created the bronze statue, which was initially on display outside the showroom in a glass case before being moved to the lobby. Elvis debuted at the Hilton (then called the International) on July 31, 1969. He performed 837 consecutive sold-out shows, performing before 2.5 million people. His final show was December 12, 1976.

John Kastilometes details reports about plans for the theater that was once home to ‘Hairspray’ at the Luxor

Plans for the theater vacated last month by “Hairspray” at the Luxor are coming into sharper focus, and familiarity seems to be the prevailing theme. As reported by Las Vegas freelance journalist and podcast host Steve Friess at www.thestrippodcast.com, the hotel plans to open yet another Cirque du Soleil production — the sixth in Las Vegas — that will revolve around a magic/illusion theme. Friess also said the Luxor is planning to bring in the legendary Liza Minnelli as one of a group of headliners while the production takes shape.

Apart from the podcast, we’re hearing that extreme illusionist Criss Angel will front the Cirque production. Angel, the star of “Mindfreak” on A&E, has been rumored to be in the Luxor’s long-term plans and has been spotted at a bevy of Las Vegas events (particularly those with red carpets leading to the entrance) over the past several weeks.

Also, the list of headliners the Luxor is eyeing is rumored to include Julio Iglesias, Tony Bennett and Engelbert Humperdinck. All have long histories as Vegas performers, and Humperdinck recently opted out of dates in September and November at the Orleans Showroom — to pursue opportunities on the Strip. Humperdinck’s final shows at the Orleans will be July 20-23.

In response to inquiries about a permanent production show at the Luxor Theater, MGM Mirage spokeswoman Jenn Michaels said, “We’ve been looking at a number of options for the former ‘Hairspray’ theater; we are close to signing a deal and will make an announcement as soon as we are able to do so.” Michaels added that MGM Mirage doesn’t have anything to announce regarding headliners and that plans for the Luxor’s entertainment program still need to be firmed up.

As for the growth of Cirque in Las Vegas, reliable chatter is that there are preliminary plans for nine Cirque productions on the Strip by the end of the decade, including the new Luxor show, the Elvis-themed production at MGM Mirage’s Project CityCenter, a production to replace “Mamma Mia!” once it plays out at Mandalay Bay, and show No. 9 at an unspecified hotel — possibly a children’s show at Excalibur to counter the adult-themed “Zumanity.”

Vegoose lineup gets wild.

Acts from The Killers to Fiona Apple set for five-day music fest.
By Jason Bracelin/Las Vegas Review Journal

Vegoose learns to fly this year, as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have been tapped as one of the headliners of the wild-eyed five-day music festival. It’s set for Oct. 27 through Oct. 31 at Sam Boyd Stadium and other local venues as part of the Vegoose at Night series.

The predictably unpredictable lineup also boasts such big names as Las Vegas’ own The Killers, earthy Southern rockers Widespread Panic, tightly wound piano chanteuse Fiona Apple, heady hip-hop troupe The Roots, brain-scrambling rockers The Mars Volta, garage rock revisionists The Raconteurs, who feature White Stripes frontman Jack White in their ranks, along with many others.

Vegas Monopoly Game
By Rick Garman

One of the most basic of strategies in the game Monopoly is snapping up those avenues that you don’t really want so you can use them as leverage to trade for things that you do. The same theory may be in effect right now with a potential land swap deal between casino giants Harrah’s Entertainment and Boyd Gaming.

Harrah’s desperately wants the land that Barbary Coast sits on, since it’s the only piece of real estate between Harrah’s and Paris on The Strip that they don’t own. As they put the final pieces of the puzzle together on what they plan to do with their Harrah’s, Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Bally’s, and Paris properties, that tiny sliver of acreage at the corner of Flamingo and The Strip could make a big difference in the overall design.

So Harrah’s has reportedly gotten an option to purchase the land that the Westward Ho used to sit on, which is conveniently located right next door to Boyd’s Stardust and the upcoming $4 billion replacement called Echelon Place. According to reports published in the local papers, Harrah’s is trying to convince Boyd to swap properties so they can have their east Strip monopoly and Boyd can expand it’s north Strip presence.

Most analysts say Boyd is very cool to the idea for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which is that they want to remain competitive in the center Strip area and could eventually redevelop the Barbary Coast land themselves. But Harrah’s wants that land badly so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them throw a big chunk of change at Boyd to sweeten the deal.

Updated Hotel Review: The Four Seasons By Rick Garman

Those lucky enough to be able to afford luxury hotels usually look no further than The Four Seasons, no matter what city they are in. The Vegas version will not disappoint them. The property is undeniably stunning and the service is world-class, but consider yourself warned: this hotel is not for the average Vegas visitor. Unless you have a lot of money and enjoy the perks and pampering that comes with it, this is probably not the place for you. The hotel is technically part of the Mandalay Bay resort but unless you come in from that direction you’d have a hard time knowing it. There is a separate entrance, lobby, bars, restaurants, spa, pool, elevators, and rooms that are only accessible to guests of The Four Seasons. It is quite remarkable how well they have isolated themselves from the hubbub of their next-door neighbor. Every square inch of the public areas is infused with a quiet opulence that only changes when you wander down the long halls and are faced with the din of casino madness.

These public areas are filled with classical, yet somehow very modern, pieces of furniture, art, and other miscellaneous decorations. As would be expected there is lots of fine marble and wood detail work. Of special note are the giant floral arrangements, which, in addition to being stunning, are actually real flowers - a welcome change from the typical Vegas fakery.

Private elevators access The Four Seasons rooms, which occupy the 35th through 39th floors of the Mandalay Bay Tower. Despite having similar layouts, these are not just nicer versions of the Mandalay Bay rooms. The décor, the furnishings, and the general feel of even the elevators and hallways are completely different - much more luxurious at The Four Seasons.

All of the standard guest rooms have been redone in one of three different color schemes – warm green, gold, or plum – and all of the amenities have been upgraded. There are flat-panel televisions, fluffy duvet covers, high-speed Internet, Bose stereos, and new furnishings that are more contemporary than their predecessors but still comfortable and definitely luxurious.

Rooms also come with a standard wet-bar and mini-fridge, comfy robes, in-room coffee makers, safes, irons and boards, and other niceties.

The up-level suites go all the way up to massive three bedroom affairs that wrap around the entire end of the hotel, offering 180-degree views of Vegas. The amenities and facilities here are too numerous to mention.

There is a very nice spa area with treatment rooms larger than my apartment, a full workout facility, and a private pool separate from the Mandalay Bay’s facility. It is here that you’ll really start to get the concept behind this hotel with luxurious service that borders on the ridiculous. For instance, they actually have people who will mist you with Evian water or provide chilled towels and popsicles if the desert sun gets to be too much.

It is all about service at The Four Seasons. The staff is omnipresent yet not at all intrusive, waiting to cater to your every whim and pampering you with special little touches that will mostly go unnoticed. For instance, when you arrive the bedside clock/stereo is facing toward the room but during turn-down service, the maids turn it toward the bed so you can see how late you’re going to bed. Simple stuff but when every hotel in town has flat panel TVs and fluffy duvets, you need the little things to set yourself apart.

I could go on and on but I think you probably get the idea. So where is the bad news? It’ll come with your bill. To get all of this luxury you can expect to pay at least (with an emphasis on the “at least”) $200 per night for a standard room and usually significantly more than that. Of course these days, $200 per night (if you can get it that cheap) is really not that bad for a Vegas hotel room so as other hotels have gone way up in price this one has started to seem more reasonable by comparison.

Of note are the many hotel packages they offer that inevitably jack up the room rates but offer plenty of fun extras. They have everything from simple Bed and Breakfast packages that give you a morning meal at their Verandah Café to an “Indulge Your Car” package for those road-tripping it to town that gives you a $70 gas card, car wash, complimentary parking, and snacks for the trip home.

They also offer family packages and even if you don’t opt for that, kids get special treatment here with a welcome/activity package for the wee ones.

Is it worth it? If you need to ask that question, then probably not. The Four Seasons caters to a very specific, very wealthy, very pampered market - one that wouldn’t say “Ouch” at the thought of spending $200.00 per night for a hotel room in Vegas (or anywhere else). I’m not part of that market. If you are and want to stay on The Strip, then this is one of your best options.

WORLD’S FARE DINNER BUFFET
RETURNS TO THE RIVIERA

A distinct dining experience returns to the Las Vegas Strip.  The Riviera Hotel and Casino has responded to its guests’ outcry to “bring back the dinner buffet.”    The unique dining experience once again features five themed stations: Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Bar-B-Que and “Made In America.”  While the menus change daily, action stations feature skilled artisans, preparing favorite dishes and the traditional carving station comes back, offering roast turkey, slow smoked beef brisket, and German style Kielbasa.
