Monorail set to grow.
Expansion would link line with airport, convention centers.
Major expansion plans are in the works for the Las Vegas Monorail to help relieve traffic congestion along the resort corridor, including a hookup with the airport down Swenson Street and new stations that will link all four of the Strip’s major convention centers for the first time.
The company’s plans, which are still being worked on, include adding at least five new stations as well as a series of connections that would link the Las Vegas Monorail to properties on the west side of the Strip, Las Vegas Monorail Co. President Curtis Myles said.
With the new stations, the monorail will link more than 6 million square feet of exhibit and meeting space, including for the first time the Sands Expo and Convention Center, the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and the convention facilities planned at Boyd Gaming’s Echelon Place, enhancing Las Vegas’ role as the convention capital of the country, he said.

NORM: Playboy Club will turn back clock.
Hugh Hefner got his wish: When the first Playboy Club in 22 years opens Oct. 5 atop the Palms new tower, retro bunny outfits will be back.
“It was real important for Hef to have the traditional bunny outfits represented,” said Palms owner George Maloof.
The retro-costumed bunnies will be dealers at 10 blackjack tables in the club, which has a capacity of 500. Cocktail servers will wear new Roberto Cavalli-designed outfits unveiled last November.
Under a new law, the Playboy Club will be the first Nevada casino to offer gaming in an area charging admission. Maloof worked more than three years with the Nevada Gaming Commission, the Gaming Control Board and Nevada Resort Association to pass the legislation.
“From the beginning when gaming was allowed, they were very careful to make sure there was nothing that was construed as discrimination,” Maloof said. “That’s why anyone could walk into a high-limit area.”
The Playboy Club will be under the Palms’ new nightclub, Moon, which will have a retractable roof. The two will be connected by an escalator, as will the restaurant, Nove, Italian for nine.
N9ne Group will operate the clubs and restaurants.
Four floors from the top of the tower will be the 9,500-square-foot Hugh Hefner Sky Villa, “our version of the Playboy Mansion,” said Maloof.

Keno is making a comeback at Caesars Palace in a new 1,000-square-foot, 22-seat lounge, decorated in a retro pink and brown décor, near James Beard’s and Bradley Ogden’s restaurants and the Colosseum showroom. Keno supervisor Dolly Wells says the lounge is a hot spot, especially for newcomers, since competitors are closing their keno rooms. While it may be smart strategy, Palace old timers are still complaining. They say “dressing up” the old Keno games from Café Lago fits with offering bingo and is reminiscent of the scene from a Chevy Chase movie about a Vegas family vacation. Remember the keno winner clenching his chest as he dies of a heart attack?

USA Today recently reported it doesn’t get more “Vegas” than the 11-acre pool complex at Mandalay Bay. Pretty good publicity, but credit where credit’s due. Mandalay Bay calls its pool a beach and trucked in tons of sand to prove it. Its wave pool creates big enough swells for minor-league body surfing. And now the complex features an exclusive adult section with its own cover charge, the Moorea Beach Club. Mandalay calls it “European bathing,” but it’s better known as topless. And just as in Europe, some of the topless beauties are the biggest draws for the complex.

Gold Rush
From “Norm” The Las Vegas Review Journal
The plot thickens in the drama of Jamie Gold, Hollywood agent-turned-poker king.
There are rumblings of an “explosive” development in a story rife with more twists than an episode of “The Sopranos.”
An insider says look for court challenges over whether Gold agreed to divvy up a share (or shares) of the $12 million prize he won at the World Series of Poker’s main event Aug. 12 at the Rio.
Gold, whose Web site credits him with propelling dozens of actors to A-list status, including “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, created the intrigue when he hired two bodyguards, citing “threats” made during the WSOP.
Gold’s publicist, Bill Horn, was on the telephone Saturday to set the record straight.
Yes, Gold was sponsored by the gaming site, bodog.com, Horn said. But, “He will be an ambassador. No money was involved.”
An Internet report claimed Gold’s sponsor would get 50 percent.
Gold’s Web site resumé is “absolutely accurate,” said Horn, although “he has not been in management or an agency for some time.”
Gold is working on three reality films with two partners and will help ESPN promote the main event before it airs in September, said Horn.

JOHN L. SMITH: Dealers angry, but Wynn’s tip-sharing change might spread.
Steve Wynn is changing the Vegas Rules again, and dealers at Wynn Las Vegas are steaming.
They’re so mad, in fact, that they’re ringing reporters’ phones and jamming gaming blogs with their complaints after being told they’ll now have to share their tips with floor supervisors. Depending on your source, the shake-up will cost them from 10 to 20 percent at the bottom line.
That’s enough to make anyone howl, but the dealers I’ve spoken with acknowledge that even with the reduction in pay, they’ll still have one of the best jobs on the Strip. I was tempted to tell them to call their dealers union representative but decided that wouldn’t go over too well because there is no such union. Fact is, while tips have increased over the years at some casinos, most dealers haven’t had a substantial hourly wage increase in 20 years.

All that glitter is not Gold’s, says lawsuit seeking half of poker win.
By Sam Skolnik/Las Vegas Sun
Call it the $6 million promise.
Recently crowned World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold is being sued for half of his mammoth, $12 million winnings.
According to a suit filed Monday in District Court, Los Angeles-based “television development executive” Bruce Crispin Leyser claims that Gold promised to pay him half of whatever he won at the series as part of an informal arrangement. Leyser also asked a judge to stop Gold from claiming or spending any of the money until the dispute is settled.
Chief District Judge Kathy Hardcastle signed a temporary restraining order preventing Gold from collecting his winnings from the Rio, where the World Series was held, at least until Sept. 1, when the first court hearing in the case is scheduled.

John Katsilometes notes a schedule change – and possibly more on the horizon – for ‘Phantom: Las Vegas Spectacular’
The schedule for “Phantom: Las Vegas Spectacular” is becoming as nimble as the show’s namesake.
Producers are tweaking the schedule for “Phantom,” with the changes to take effect Sept. 12, when the show will be entering its fourth month at its $40 million theater at the Venetian. The new schedule has performances set for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 7 and 10 p.m., Fridays and Sundays 7 p.m. only, dark Wednesday. The show is currently dark on Tuesdays.
The pacing of the performances, with the midweek dark day, will mean that those who play the dually casted roles of the Phantom (Brent Barrett and Anthony Crivello) and Christine (Sierra Boggess and Elizabeth Loycano) to have consecutive days off. But they pay the price with back-to-back performances the night before they take that time off.
More intriguing is talk that “Phantom” producers are also strongly considering weekend matinee performances beginning in mid-October, possibly a 5 p.m. show on Sundays and a 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Word is that ticket sales for the 10 p.m. shows have been sluggish, and slipping in a couple of weekend matinees could boost the numbers for visitors who want to start the night, rather than end it, with the Phantom.

Blackjack Continuous Shuffling Machine by Bill Burton
In 2000 Shuffle Master introduced the first Continuous Shuffling Machine (CSM) for the game of Blackjack. Their machine was called “The King” and its main purpose was to help the casinos foil card counters. In fact the ads for Shuffle Masters Continuous Shuffling Machine proclaimed, “The King continuous shuffler is the card counters worst nightmare.” For years the casinos have been trying to thwart card counters who gain an advantage at blackjack by using expert play. Card counting is not illegal but the casinos don’t take kindly to any players who take the time to learn a counting system and use their brains when they are playing.
In Las Vegas the casinos are allowed to bar players they suspect of counting. In Atlantic City casinos can not ban players but they can limit the size of their bets and shuffle up on any player suspected of counting.

How very Vegas
It’s luck – and believe it or not, coupons – that fuel a fun, low-stakes tour with a Sin City insider.
By Larry BleibergDallas Morning News
I have no cash, just a driver’s license. But that’s enough.
I hand my license to a clerk at the Golden Nugget Casino. A moment later, she returns it with a plastic card. I take the card to a video poker machine and slide it in. The computer chirps hello.
Credit: $10.
My Vegas adventure has started.
Forty-eight hours later, after a whirl of casinos, card games, betting machines, and a disastrous wager on the San Francisco 49ers, I tally my haul: $75, free and clear.
This clearly isn’t a story of high-rolling. But it’s an only-in-Vegas tale. Starting with nothing but the ability to pass a driver’s test, I can finance a gambling run.

Visitors are willing cogs in the machine.
By Rod DavisSan Antonio Express News
Nothing so became my feelings for this town as the leaving it.
I know, a rant against Vegas is as a flea bite unto an elephant.
Nonetheless, with props to the classic castle-siege taunt in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I snark in the city’s general direction.
If, in fact, Vegas is a city. Part of it is, and you can see the twinkling lights of its sprawling expansion when flying in at night or on the opening credits of CSI. There are so many newcomers and burbs down there that it’s only a matter of time before they all run out of water.
More accurately, Vegas is a mall. For adults. Mercifully, the whole family-destination marketing scheme of the recent past has been abandoned, so at least that hypocrisy is gone.

NORM: Local ‘Idol’ entry Gordon assaulted.
Local “American Idol” contestant Mikalah Gordon is “lucky she’s alive” after being assaulted during a robbery at gunpoint at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, her mother said.
Gordon, 18, was taking a break from recording music when a man pointing a gun approached her and a male friend, Gordon’s mother, Victoria Cavaricci, said Wednesday.
Three other men came up, and Gordon was ordered to lie on her back on the sidewalk.
Gordon, who was 16 when she reached the finals of the 2005 “American Idol” competition, told her mother that her head was slammed on the sidewalk by an assailant who was angry that she had looked at his face.
As her assailants groped her, Gordon had a panic attack that may have saved her, Cavaricci said, adding, “She thought she was going to die.”
“She’s scarred and scared, but it could have been so much worse,” Cavaricci said. “Police said she’s so lucky she’s alive.”
Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell confirmed that the robbery occurred. The police are still investigating it, he said.
Cavaricci gave the location as near Nellis Boulevard and Washington Avenue. The robbers got away with a cell phone and $5 in cash, she said.
Gordon was putting together songs she planned to sing this weekend at a benefit in Orange County, Calif., for kids with cancer.
The precocious teen, whose “Nanny”-like nasal tones drew comparison to Fran Drescher, landed a guest-starring role on Drescher’s sitcom, “Living With Fran.”
Earlier this year, supermodel Tyra Banks hired Gordon to be a correspondent for “The Tyra Banks Show.”
Gordon also has been working on a project with “Idol” judge Randy Jackson, a music producer, Cavaricci said.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: ‘Bottom’s Up’ is back in business at Fitzgeralds.
Downtown entertainment is forgotten but not gone, something you also could say about the “Bottom’s Up” revue resurfacing at Fitzgeralds.
Breck Wall’s revue of blackout comedy sketches has been a recurring fixture in Las Vegas since 1964. It disappears for long stretches but always manages to reopen. This time it debuts Sept. 8, replacing “Steve Connolly’s Spirit of the King.”
Wall is self-producing and starring in “Bottom’s Up” with longtime comic sidekicks David Harris and Sue Motsinger. “It’s like our family,” Wall says of the revue last seen as a Flamingo afternoon show in 2004. A trio of dancers is interspersed with the burlesque-style sketches.
Wall has been meeting with a fellow Texan, writer-performer Billie Duncan, to record his memoirs for a book project. Tentatively titled “I Ran into a Breck Wall,” the book will detail his career and friendship with Jack Ruby, the club owner who killed John F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.

SHOW REVIEW: ‘Toni Braxton: Revealed’
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
Room to ‘Breathe Again’: Toni Braxton seems to have overcome a rough start with ‘Revealed’.
Perhaps the true test of stardom is to rise above all the clutter that surrounds it.
Toni Braxton’s new show at the Flamingo got off to a rocky start. But a few weeks in, it’s looking as if her considerable persona can outshine a lot of cliches and missteps.
Not that all cliches are bad. The “Revealed” show assails us with sheer gowns, undulating dancers and freeze-frame poses on the mandatory staircase enfolding the nine-piece band. If it’s a bit overstuffed for the Flamingo’s cozy stage, how long has it been since the Strip had a star who traffics in sheer sexiness? Ain’t no bad thing, baby.

Las Vegas Impressionist beats the odds, Again:
Whether it’s surviving a terminal diagnosis of stage IV cancer, coming back to life after drowning in a river, recovering completely from one hundred percent kidney failure, or the also nearly impossible probability of keeping a show alive in Las Vegas without a million dollar ad campaign, Larry G. Jones – The Man of 1002 Voices knows what it’s like to make it through to the other side of great adversity. After a very successful year, his highly acclaimed Singing Impressionist show will carry on for at least another six months at Fitzgeralds Casino in downtown Las Vegas. With over 1,000 shows in four years, it seems that Jones has the longest running impressionist-comedy show in downtown Las Vegas, ever. Even rarer, is that the show has survived amongst over seventy other shows in this extremely aggressive and competitive Vegas market without a single magazine advertisement, billboard, or cab back; relying primarily on word of mouth referrals from enthusiastic show goers. Whether it’s his phenomenal medical history or his achievements as a headliner, if you ask him, Larry won’t take the credit for any of his many accounts of survival, but instead gives thanks to God.
Don’t miss this one of a kind combination of Singer, celebrity, and Presidential Parodies and dead-on voices! If you like to laugh and enjoy great music from the fifties, sixties, and seventies, you’re in for a treat with a huge variety of up to seventy five voices of the greatest music artists and celebrities ranging from Cher to Neil Diamond to Rodney Dangerfield and every president since JFK. Bring your grandma and the kids because this is one of the few shows in Vegas that all ages will enjoy. The show that more friends bring their friends back to see!
Larry G. Jones – The Man of 1002 Voices Show: 9pm, Fitzgeralds Casino, downtown Las Vegas under the Fremont street experience. Seating is limited and advance reservations are highly recommended. Call 1-800-595-4849 or book VIP tickets directly for better prices than anywhere else on the web.

From “Eye On Vegas”
Beacher Rocks Out:
Tears flowed, spectators applauded and there were hugs aplenty when rotund comic Jeff Beacher quietly opened the doors of his newest venture, Beacher’s Rock Bar at the Imperial Palace. Who was the very first customer of the Rock Bar? It was none other than LVFBM CEO Michael Politz! The large and in-charge Politz put several months of trading barbs and low blows with the comic-come-bar owner aside to support him as the doors to the Rock Bar opened for the very first time. “Beacher and I have known each other for many years and I don’t think either of us wanted our relationship to spiral the way it did.” During a late-night phone call between the two, apologies were made and the relationship was repaired. “Once Jeff made it clear he was willing to work to repair our relationship and make certain accommodations, I too wanted to put this behind us. There’s no reason for a third party to get in the middle of a friendship.”
As dark hit the Strip and the masses walking along Neon Boulevard turned their attention from sight seeing to libation, an amazing thing happened…a line-up started to form outside the Rock Bar. Don’t get us wrong, these aren’t the same folks waiting in line at PURE or Tryst and they certainly aren’t the kind to drop $500 on a bottle of vodka. Instead they are of the flip-flop sporting, shorts and ball cap wearing variety. That being said, they represent the largest bulk of Vegas’ tourists, the average American who wants to have some Vegas fun and doesn’t mind paying for his or her drinks. While the carnival pitch echoed loudly over the Strip, patrons were wrangled through the door by little people and beautiful women alike. Inside, DJ Sugar Shan eclectically jumped from Bon Jovi classic to Kanye West blockbuster to Carlos Santana staple getting a rise from the packed bar with each hit. Also getting a rise out of patrons were the beautiful Beacher’s Babies who do it all; bartend, serve cocktails, ride the mechanical bull, and of course, go-go dance whenever the tune strikes them. While Beacher has taken a lot of guff for opening a small bar at the Imperial Palace, he may just be onto something. Provide for the masses and they will come.
People are Whispering
Talk about a runaway success, Treasure Island’s temporary yet booming Whisper Thursdays pool party continues to be a raging success. The second week of Whisper brought over 900 guests out to the pool enjoying the early hour (6P) setting, reduced bottle and cabana pricing and the bevy of beauties who have been showing up in bikinis to revel in the swimming-friendly nightclub environment. Organizers point to the FREE cover charge and insanely priced bottles ($175-$225) as the keys for the promotion’s success so far. We agree but would add that the NO dress code approach and commitment to the casual certainly up the ante as well. While Whisper Thursdays only has two more weeks left of this summer, we recommend checking it out before it goes away until next year. Whisper Thursdays will take place at the Treasure Island pool at 6P on Thursday, August 31. Remember to bring your swimsuit because swimming isn’t only allowed, it’s encouraged!
Second Time’s a Charm
F&B brass at the MGM Grand are walking a little taller these days as they near the mid-week opening of Rouge, the still crimson-drenched lounge that was once known as Teatro Eurobar. No one dishes the dirt quite like the Eye, which might be one reason why we nailed it in our report from way back (Eye on Vegas – 04/11/06). As promised, the Ferrari-red leather booths remain, as does the still-impressive digital bottle wall. Gone, as predicted, are the dancing cat walk bar, which has been replaced with the more traditional variety, and the UFO-esque casing that enveloped the outlet. The result…a wide-open and appealing lounge that uses striking red and black contrasting furniture and sleek silver crowning to provide the perfect starting point to MGM’s restaurant row. Under management of the MGM’s nightclub department, Teatro never really found a niche, operating as many things during its brief year-long tenure, including a lounge, an after-hours club and special event venue. After being handed back to the F&B department, the decision was made to create a casino lounge similar to that of Zuri, a popular and profit producing outlet just steps away. In Rouge, MGM should have another successful outlet on their hands. Don’t get the wrong idea, it will serve as a casino lounge hoping to draw patrons from the dozen restaurants within the Studio Walk as well as guests going to or coming from Cirque du Soleil’s Ka production across the hall. Sometimes it’s not always about flash, cash and bottle service. Much like Zuri, expect Rouge to be a big-time money maker for the casino, one drink at a time. You can check out the brand new Rouge for yourself when it opens Wednesday at the MGM Grand.
Prom Night
On Tuesday, September 5th the second annual Las Vegas Prom will take control of the Palms Pool, again offering up an evening built around the industry players that make Vegas nightlife so extra special. Event organizer Bo ‘Bo-Town’ Karlen is hoping that this year’s event will surpass the amazing success that the Las Vegas Prom enjoyed last year with an upgraded schedule that includes performances from Cirque du Soleil, ‘80s cover band Love Shack and a slew of local DJ talent, including DJ R.O.B., DJ Frankie, DJ Shift, DJ Matt Lindsey, Jack LaFleur and our boy, KC the Drummer. The party will get started at 7P with a hosted bar and registration to vote for the prom king and queen, an honor that went to the Palms VIP guru Marko Greisen andJET’s Zee Zandi last year. Tickets are currently on sale for $50 per couple, or $20 for women and $40 for men who want to role stag. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit the official Las Vegas Prom Web site here. You definitely do not want to miss this one, especially with the third installment of the Big Sleepover taking place upstairs afterward, and the Eye on Vegas has a special sleepover surprise we will unveil next week!
Your Labor Day Party Guide
Labor Day is always a great weekend in Las Vegas with lots to offer, so much in fact, that the Eye is providing you with a comprehensive guide to get your fall started with a bang. Look at the names dotting these parties and tell us that Las Vegas isn’t the nightlife capitol of the world, we dare you!
Friday, September 1st
Ditch Friday at the Palms Pool has lured the guilty and not so guilty away from work each and every Friday afternoon for months now. With a long weekend mere steps away, they have upped the ante by bringing in DJ Kaskade to get the weekend started right. Sunbathers take note; this should be the busiest and best Ditch Friday of the summer.
The newly single Dave Navarro is hosting the party at PURE Nightclub. DJ Cubici takes over the ones-and-twos. Tao Nightclub is sticking with their tried and true Friday night formula, DJ Reach on the wheels of steel and more sexy club goers than you can shake a stick at.
LURE Ultra Lounge (Wynn Las Vegas) will be hosting what seems to be the very first White Party of the season on Friday as they launch Labor Day weekend with a bang. We think it should go without saying, but you never know, break out your dress whites for what is ‘officially’ the last time of the season. By the way, shouldn’t we have different rules in Vegas since the weather stays pleasant into October? Just a thought.
Ice Nightclub is the home of house music in Las Vegas and has a packed house-music long weekend schedule to prove it. Starting it all off will be DJ legend and house music pioneer John Digweed (of Sasha and Digweed fame).
Late Night Empire satisfies your early morning cravings with Back2Back, featuring talented local spinster Farsheed going back to back with Serge Devant from NYC’s Crobar Nightclub. Out on the patio, our preferred Empire spot, House Society honcho Keith Evans and Frenchy will provide the musical backdrop while you catch the sunrise.
Saturday, September 2nd
Pimp & Ho baby, enough said! All-world promoter John Huntington returns with his annual must-attend event at the Orleans Arena for one night only. If you’ve never been before, costumes for this one are an absolute must (you have to pay a penalty at the door if not pimping your finest threads), and also create the whiplash ‘what was she wearing?’ effect for all in attendance. Rocker Vince Neil will whip the crowd to a frenzy before jumping on a plane to hit the road, and Donald Glaude returns to the Las Vegas party scene. If you still have not bought your tickets, please click here.
Saturday Night is going to be crazy all over town and Tao Nightclub is certainly no exception. Saturday night will feature resident DJ Vice thrilling the out-of-towners with mash up madness.
Turntable legend Grand Master Flash returns to rock Tangerine once again. The NYC pioneer is an absolute delight to see; he drops insane combinations and might just possess the fastest fingers in the west.
Papa Roach brings the Global Gathering festivities at the Palms to a fevered pitch when he rocks the Palms Pool with an ultra-special guest. We’ve heard who the surprise guest might be and it’s worth the price of admission. We’ll give you a hint, expect live mash-up at its best. Upstairs in a super-special suite party DJ Samantha Ronson (yes, her and Mark are brother and sister) will do her second set of the day. Her first set will be during the afternoon at the Palms Pool, giving guests a nice poolside surprise. The Eye on Vegas is giving away two pairs of tickets to the persons who can guess who the “ultra-special guest” is. The two closest guesses to e-mail us here win!
Ice Nightclub will continue its house music commitment with another world renowned spinster; this time it’s Tall Paul rocking the frosted venue.
Late Night Empire brings back Joey Mazzola in the main room with a special surprise guest DJ while PURE’s house music maven, Frank Richards, handles the patio beats, a place he’s quite comfortable with, along with Jason Lema.
Sunday, September 3rd
We can’t neglect our Latin friends and Eye on Vegas en Español readers; on Sunday ‘Super Estrella Live’ at The Rio’s Club Rio looks to be the highlight of the Labor Day weekend for the Hispanic community. With special performances by Mach Y Daddy and Calle 13, Club Rio will put the spotlight on Raggaeton music with a special concert that you can only get into if you win tickets. Thanks to our friends at Univision, Telefutura, Super Estrella 92.7FM, Heineken Premium Light and Club Rio, we are hooking up the first 92 people who e-mail us here with a pair of tickets to this very special event. If you can’t wait ‘til midweek to see if you won, head over to Voodoo Lounge (Rio) tonight (08/28) for ‘Elevacion,’ where 92 people will win tickets to Super Estrella Live.
Sunday Night is going to be special indeed with some of the planet’s hottest house music DJs working venues up and down the street. At Tao, big boss Jason Strauss went back to his East Coast roots and signed superstar DJ Erick Morillo for a rare Sunday opening of Tao. He’s not alone as the ultra-sexy, and formerly contracted PURE Management DJ, Sky Nellor, gets her first chance to rock Tao’s Opium Room. Expect hip-hop to rule this roost on Sunday.
Over at the Palms, Global Gathering continues its three-day frenzy with two acclaimed DJs rocking two different venues. Inside, at Rain Nightclub, the world’s top ranked DJ, Tiesto, will take command of the DJ booth and show why Global Gathering is such a hit worldwide. Outside at the Palms Pool, renowned Big Apple DJ Stretch Armstrong returns to Las Vegas with an outdoor set of serious hip-hop beats. The best of both worlds huh, love it! We must be feeling generous, because The Eye on Vegas is giving away two pairs of tickets to the first two people who can tell us what DJ Stretch Armstrong is best known for. E-mail us here with your answers.
Oh, you still want more house music? Ok, not a problem. Over at JET Nightclub higher-beats-per-minute are taking over the main room when ‘Dubfire’ of Deep Dish fame will headline a fantastic Sunday promotion. This is the second installment of a party that rocked Memorial Day weekend when ‘Sharam,’ the other half of the DJ duo Deep Dish, rocked the main room in a party that still has locals talking. Also spinning deep house beats that night will be local favorite Faarsheed and Danny Love from the OC.
Going against the grain on Sunday night is nightlife giant PURE Nightclub who has signed former 90210 star Tori Spelling to host the evening. Adding legitimate turntable star power for the evening is PMG’s reining hero of hip-hop and New York City turntable pioneer DJ Grand Master Flash.
Rounding out an unheard of house music evening in Las Vegas, Ice Nightclub ends Labor Day weekend strong with Bad Boy Bill and UK spinster Eddie Halliwell.
If your still going when Sunday after-hours rolls around at the Empire Ballroom, former Las Vegas local Sandra Collins spins in the main room with Funky Bad Chad and Tao’s Omar Galeano. Out on the patio, Evans reprises his role with Eric Aguila

The Amazing Johnathan to Film Comedy Central Special September 1.
Comic Magician’s one-hour special “Wrong on Every Level” to be filmed at the Hudson Theater in New York.
The internationally renowned comic magician Amazing Johnathan will be filming a one-hour special for Comedy Central on Friday, September 1. Filming of the aptly entitled “Wrong on Every Level” will take place at Manhattan’s Hudson Theater for television broadcast later this fall. The taping will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a second “uncensored” taping, which will only be released by Comedy Central on DVD.
The popularity of Amazing Johnathan’s previous specials with Comedy Central was a key factor in the network’s decision to feature him in one of their rare one-hour time slots. Not only is Johnathan one of Comedy Central’s top five most downloaded performers on iTunes, he is also a veteran of three previous highly acclaimed appearances with the network.
Amazing Johnathan has new material and special surprises in store for “Wrong on Every Level,” much of which is already incorporated into his nightly show at the Sahara Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The special will also include a video segment that features Johnathan’s twisted version of “street magic” with illusionist Criss Angel and comedian Carrot Top taking part in the mayhem.
“I am very much looking forward to performing in New York,” said Amazing Johnathan about his special. “We have hilarious new material never before seen on the East Coast and I cannot wait to see the crowd’s reaction.”
The Amazing Johnathan is an eccentric comic magician whose bizarre humor and unscripted antics have earned him widespread, international recognition as one of the most original and brave performers today. After touring across the globe for more than 25 years and gaining fans in the U.S., U.K., Europe, South America, Australia and more, Amazing Johnathan decided to let his fans come to him by settling on a permanent show room in Las Vegas. Since 2001, Johnathan has sold more than a half million tickets, making him one of the most successful Las Vegas headliners in history.
The Amazing Johnathan Show performs at 10 p.m. nightly, dark Thursdays, in the Congo Room at the Sahara Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Due to the show’s adult themes and language, guests under the age of 18 will not be admitted without a parent or legal guardian. Tickets are priced at $44.95 plus taxes and fees for general admission, or $54.95 plus taxes and fees for VIP seating, and may be purchased by calling the Sahara Hotel & Casino box office at (702) 737-2515, or by visiting www.saharavegas.com .
‘Stomp’-ing Grounds.
New 1,500-seat Aladdin theater to host percussion, dance show.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
From Motley Crue to a different kind of noise: A show from the creators of “Stomp” has been announced as the resident show for the new 1,500-seat theater under construction at the Aladdin.
The news, in the form of an audition notice for “a new production” doesn’t make clear if the show is a new concept. It probably will be a new version of “Stomp” with an expanded cast and custom staging, much like the difference between the original off-Broadway Blue Man Group production and the current edition at The Venetian.
“Percussion and/or dance experience” is required for the auditions Sept. 25-30.

For notorious and infamous, all roads seem to lead to Las Vegas
By David Kihara/Las Vegas Review Journal
Think all the bad guys wind up in Las Vegas?
Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs is, after all, only the latest high-profile fugitive apprehended in the Las Vegas Valley.
The international criminal career of Doris Payne ended here last year. Payne, a thief for 50 of her 75 years, had stolen jewels in Paris, Monaco and Rome before she was
nabbed by police at the Neiman Marcus store in the Fashion Show mall on the Strip.

NORM: Paris Hilton rocks Beacher’s house.
So what was a nice girl like Paris Hilton doing in a joint like this?
There she was Tuesday night, partying in the newest hot spot on the Strip, a hole-in-the-wall barely larger than some of her limos.
In a most improbable setting for the glammed-up socialite who commands six-figure appearance fees, Hilton was doing a favor for a friend.
In a scene that included a little people KISS band, stilt walkers, a goat, a capuchin monkey and a mechanical bull, Hilton had Jeff Beacher’s Rockhouse rocking.
“It’s official: There’s nothing like this anywhere,” said Beacher, who helped organize a massive Vegas CD launch party that concluded at Pure nightclub at Caesars Palace.
Three hours before her appearance, Beacher sent Hilton an official welcome at 6:30 p.m. when five skywriting planes wrote “Congrats on your CD Paris” outside her penthouse suite at Caesars Palace.
An alley between the Imperial Palace and the Flamingo doubled as a street festival that drew 6,000 to 7,000.

MDA telethon returns to city for the ‘excitement’
By Corey Levitan/Las Vegas Review Journal
The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association returns to Las Vegas Sunday after 12 years in Hollywood.
“There’s been a shift over the past 10 years,” said MDA spokesman Bob Mackle. “There’s quite a bit of talent available in Las Vegas now, so there’s no great benefit to being in L.A. And we think it’ll add more excitement to the show.”
Scheduled to perform during the broadcast at the South Coast, 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South, are local luminaries Celine Dion, Clint Holmes, Lance Burton and the cast of “Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular,” in addition to the Dave Matthews Band, Ray Romano and William Shatner, among others.

SHOW REVIEW: ‘Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding’
Getting A Good Reception: Interactive ‘Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding’ still draws plenty of fans to the Rio.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
You mean people pay good money to sit through tortuously overwrought versions of “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart”?
Well yes, when they’re not doing the chicken dance or pinning dollars to the bride’s dress.
Some people find good reasons to be out of town when wedding invitations arrive in the mail. Others willingly pony up $92.50 for “Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding.” Maybe it’s because it guarantees the fights, beer-drinking nuns and bartop-dancing strippers left to the whims of good fortune at most weddings.

Top Ten Las Vegas Values From The Las Vegas Advisor
September 2006.
1. Steak Dinner – Ellis Island – 24 Hours – $4.95
The complete steak dinner at Ellis Island moves back into its rightful place at number one. Wondering about crowds and service, we showed up at the EI for dinner at 7 pm on an insanely busy Saturday, prepared to wait an hour. The hostess told us 45 minutes. We were seated in 30. Service was prompt and the meal … well, this dinner hasn’t lost an ounce of quantity or a trace of quality in lo these many years. And two of them for the price of one (with your POV coupon) is practically a comp, as your whole outlay on this great steak dinner would be the toke anyplace else.
2. Shrimp Cocktail – Golden Gate – 11 am-3 am – $.99
The Golden Gate Casino downtown has been serving its cold-water Bay-shrimp cocktail since 1959. It’s been 99¢ for the past 15 years. It comes in a tulip cocktail glass with lemon, crackers, and a tangy homemade sauce. It’s served at the Deli in the back of the casino.
3. Ham & Eggs – Arizona Charlie’s Boulder and Decatur – 24 Hours – $2.49
Las Vegas’ best breakfast meal deal is found at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur. For a mere $2.49, you’re served a ham the size of Texas, two eggs any style, hash browns (or French fries or mashed potatoes), and toast (or biscuits and gravy). It’s available around the clock in the coffee shop, which has a big counter;, if there’s a seat at it, you don’t have to wait in line for a table.
4. Mac King – Harrah’s – Tues.-Sat. – $7.99/$21.95
The Mac King Comedy Magic afternoon show at Harrah’s is the best-value entertainment option in town. Collect a voucher from the coupon booth in the Carnaval Court outside, readily available around show time, then go up to the third floor showroom. You’ll pay a total of $18.76 for two, which includes a drink. You get 70 minutes of laughs, tricks, and even a shock or two along the way. This is a must-see entry on any Las Vegas itinerary.
5. Players Club Rebate – Arizona Charlie’s Boulder and Decatur – Daily – Up to $100
We need to add a clarification for the players club rebate. The offer is good for new club sign-ups at either Arizona Charlie’s Decatur or Boulder, but it also excludes existing Stratosphere Club members (the casinos are all related). Still, it’s a strong deal if you do qualify: the casino will rebate up to $100 of losses on your first play.
6. Buffet – Aladdin – Daily – $12.99-$24.99
A story in Las Vegas Food and Beverage magazine indicates that though the Aladdin is undergoing some serious renovation as it turns into Planet Hollywood, “the Spice Market Buffet is one venue that was designed right the first time.” Other than the Middle Eastern décor being updated, it looks like the buffet will remain the same after the Aladdin is no longer the Aladdin. That’s good news for buffet fans.
7. Prime Rib Dinner – California – 5 pm-11 pm Daily – $6.99
Sometimes going outside the Top Ten reinforces our commitment to something in it. That’s the case this month with the prime rib dinner at the California (#9). Check out the new prime meal deal at Hooter’s to get a feel for how good the Cal’s deal continues to be.
8. Beer – Casino Royale – Daily – $1.00
We’ve replaced the $1.25 beers at Slots A Fun with $1 Michelobs at the center-Strip Casino Royale. This is a 24/7 deal and the bar staff is ultra pleasant about doling ’em out (it’s not uncommon to encounter a staff that’s resentful of this type of deal). You can also get two flavors of frozen margaritas for a buck apiece. Bottom line, though: Beers for $1 are better than beers for $1.25.
9. Lunch Special – Diamond China – Daily – $3.95
Finally this month, we’ve added a rare non-casino deal to the list in the #10 spot. Our favorite Chinese restaurant, Diamond China, serves a fantastic lunch special from 11 am to 3 pm daily (yes, that means Saturday and Sunday too). The deal includes an entrée, cup of soup, egg roll, egg-fried rice, and tea, all for just $3.95 (our tab for three was $12.80). There are 10 entrées to choose from and the soup choice includes Diamond’s unparalleled hot and sour. There’s never a wait and service is jiffy. Diamond China is close to the Strip, located at 3909 W. Sahara (about a block west of Valley View).
10. MNF Parlay – Sam’s Town Boulder Station – Daily – Free
Monday Night Football parties are starting up this month. For several years in a row, the parties at Sam’s Town and Boulder Station have appeared on this list and both are advertising the same deal again this year. The first draft beer and first hot dog at both parties are free. For those who like to watch the Monday Night game in a casino, the free food and drink, the big-screen presentations, and the party atmosphere are hard to beat.

The Grand Slam for Children concert fundraiser, presented by Genworth Financial, benefits the AACF, a nonprofit organization established in 1994 to assist at-risk youth in Las Vegas, where Agassi was raised.
