Pennies ready to pop.
Slot jackpot still a random event despite hype.
By Liz Benston/Las Vegas Sun
The world’s largest slot maker says one of its penny machines is statistically overdue to pay out a jackpot of nearly $16 million.
What does this mean for high-rolling penny players?
Not much.
Each passing day, of course, means that the jackpot is one more day closer to hitting. But nobody knows when that day will come, and it’s no more likely to be today or tomorrow than it was yesterday or on your birthday.
But that hasn’t stopped the game’s manufacturer from hyping the growing jackpot and trying to entice more gamblers to play the equivalent of 300 pennies at a time that’s required to go after the top prize.

Luck, aggressiveness turn World Series of Poker to Gold.
By Howard Sturz/Las Vegas Review Journal
To the several thousand poker fans and observers who packed the Rio’s convention area Thursday night and early Friday morning, Jamie Gold’s World Series of Poker championship was a foregone conclusion.
Of the 236 hands played during almost 12 hours of poker, Gold, a 36-year-old resident of Malibu, Calif., was involved in nearly 75 percent of the action, mostly on the winning side.
“I just feel very fortunate that things went my way,” Gold said after winning $12 million and a gold, diamond-encrusted World Series championship bracelet. The two-week tournament had 8,773 entries, and Gold was the chip leader 70 percent of the time.

Took in the new “Sunset Strip” musical group the other evening in the Shimmer Cabaret inside the Hilton Hotel on Paradise. Wow! This is a very unusual musical revue in that it’s comprised of nine very talented musicians - six beautiful ladies and three guys, and each is a star in his or her own right. The two lead singers, Lorena Peril and Sina Foley, each possess unique styles and amazing vocal strength. If you like up-tempo, in your face music, then this is the place to be. It has all the elements of a good late night show. “Sunset Strip” performs Tuesday-Saturday from 10 p.m. till 1:30 a.m. Call (702) 732-5755 for more information.

Finding yet another reason to party on the Strip, Paris Hilton will celebrate the release of her first CD (called Paris, of course) Tuesday August 29 at Pure nightclub. The event will also mark the opening of Beacher’s Rockhouse, a new entertainment venue from Paris’ old pal Jeff Beacher.
We’re hearing rumors that the struggling French restaurant Lutece (Venetian) is about to be closed for good at the end of the month. It’s an odd situation because the original New York outpost closed a few years back, but its Vegas cousin remained open. You can blame poor location and zero visibility from the casino floor as the main reasons behind the closure.

It would seem as though one of our spies was somewhat murky on his or her report that plans had been submitted to the city that would lead to the implosion of the Excalibur Hotel & Casino. If perhaps they would have looked at the second page of the memo (not really), they might have noticed that the plans submitted to the city simply pertain to a casino and hotel room renovation for the property. A representative of the MGM Mirage organization confirmed the renovation story and pointed to the announcement of the Dick’s Last Resort partnership with PURE Management Group as proof the castle is going away no time soon.

The United Press International reports that the world premiere for the upcoming film, ‘Ocean’s 13’ could be held at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino, where several scenes from the film were shot. It has been reported that the original remake of ‘Ocean’s 11’ was to premier in Las Vegas but the September 11th terrorist attack raised concerns over security. While the plot of the movie is a pretty well kept secret, we hear that scenes shot at the construction site for the Palazzo Tower, the upcoming Venetian expansion, were for Al Pacino’s character, Willie Banks who will be ‘building a casino there.’

The Rockhouse Cometh… It’s all in a day’s work for comedian Jeff Beacher. To celebrate the opening of Beacher’s Rockhouse Bar, on Tuesday, August 29th, there will be a block party from 7 p.m. until midnight in celebration of Paris Hilton’s “Paris” album release. There will be vendors, carnival games, entertainment, food and drink vendors, and more located in between The Flamingo Hotel and Casino and O’Sheas Casino on Caesar’s Palace Way across the street from Caesar’s Palace. At 9 p.m., Beacher will attempt to break the record for “World’s Heaviest Pig In a Blanket” as he will be wrapped in dough by little people, lifted 10 stories by a crane, and dropped in a giant pool of ketchup where he will stay submerged for 10 minutes–a fete that even David Blaine could not accomplish. At midnight the mayhem will continue at Pure Nightclub for the official after-party and the official MAGIC party for Maxim, Stuff and Blender Magazines.

Riviera officials want to make this perfectly clear: The reason “CSI” moved the taping of its upcoming season-opener from their hotel to the Plaza had nothing to do with showing the Crazy Girls’ relief (which famously celebrates the girls’ backsides) on national TV. As longtime Riv PR man John Neeland explained, a CSI location manager said the show decided to use the Plaza rather than the Riviera because the Westward Ho building across the street is no longer giving off light (that’s because the hotel is closed) and nighttime camera angles would have caught actors coming out of the Riviera’s doorways in to a vast blackness. The Crazy Girls relief, if used, would have been tastefully covered (probably digitally) before airing and was not a major issue.

Dealers involved in the World Series of Poker are sputtering mad that no one at the final table left a tip. Viva Las Spandex: The oft-reported Cirque du Soleil/Elvis show planned for the MGM Mirage’s Project CityCenter was made official Thursday. The plan is for the show to open with the hotel (construction of which is said to be moving at a quick clip) in November 2009. The hotel with the strongest Elvis affiliation is, of course, the LV Hilton, where Elvis performed from 1969 through 1976 when the property was known as the International. Hilton spokesman Ira David Sternberg said he is not aware of any Hilton executives being approached about the proposed Cirque production, but added, “Anything that reflects on Elvis in a positive way is a tribute to his tenure here at the Las Vegas Hilton. We’ll never forget Elvis - the statue in front of our hotel reflects that memory.”

One has been a headliner on the Strip for 15 years; the other for two months. Lance Burton and Gerry McCambridge perform tricks. Amazing tricks. Jaw-dropping, head-scratching tricks. Tricks that astound audiences even though they know they are tricks.
Burton built his reputation as one of the world’s top magicians on astonishing feats, such as his escape from the chains binding him to the tracks as a roller coaster bore down on him. He has parlayed his fame into a $27 million theater built especially for him at the Monte Carlo.
His show begins with his sleight of hand. After materializing onstage in dramatic fashion, the magician fills the air with birds. Doves fly out of canes, out of fire, out of torn-up paper. A white canary named Elvis comes out of a shredded napkin. Burton puts Elvis in a round, wire cage that floats across stage.

John Katsilometes takes a jaunt through the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood with CEO Robert Earl.
The Aladdin’s total makeover to become Planet Hollywood can be compared to a complete home remodeling project. Except in this case the home covers more than a hundred thousand square feet and all of the time- and cost-consuming renovations must be done while guests are still happily enjoying the digs.
“We want to have better ‘interconnectivity’ between all areas of the hotel and casino,” co-chairman of Planet Hollywood Resort Casino Robert Earl said Saturday at the hotel he plucked from bankruptcy in 2003. During a quick trip to town to check on the property (and review final details for the 2007 Miss America Pageant, which this week is expected announce a return to the Theatre for the Performing Arts), Earl led during a brisk walking tour of the heavily compartmentalized Aladdin casino and mezzanine levels.
We have known for weeks that work on the turnover from Aladdin to the more celebrity-fueled Planet Hollywood brand was behind schedule - it might not be completed until the spring of 2007. But now we have a better idea as to why.
“What has made this so time-consuming is all of the work has been done while the hotel is still operating. We could have shut it down, but with our high occupancy rates it would not have made any sense,” Earl said, explaining why construction has seemed to inch along over the past few months. He also said the permit process for many of the construction projects has been snagged, as Clark County has been buried with such permits recently.
Earl led us into a few of the resort’s more expansive projects. A temporary registration desk has been moved into the mezzanine level while the lobby downstairs is totally refurbished (a project that will be finished by October, likely). A massive expanse on that level - about 40,000 square feet - has been re-targeted and will serve temporarily as a casino, with plans to bring an ultra lounge (among other amenities) to the site.
Several new restaurants are planned for the mezzanine . Also impressive was the progress on the $20 million, 1,500-seat showroom (expected to be in full operation by the end of the year) that Earl says will rival any in the city and serve as an ideal complement to the Theatre for the Performing Arts, which itself is being renovated (once finished, the seating capacity will be variable - 4,000 or the current 7,000).
Downstairs, the walls that seem to serve no purpose other than to impede progress are actually concealing considerable work on a new main casino level - just ducking into a doorway reveals a gothic construction scene of dusty concrete and new escalators where Sinbad’s Lounge once stood. When that project is finished (again, probably by October) the crews shift to the area of the casino currently in use and go to work there. And the escalators that visitors met at the casino entrance from the Desert Passage mall will have been removed, with a more wide-open and accessible entrance to the casino.
“Interconnectivity,” in lay terms.
The entire Planet Hollywood resort (including the under-construction Planet Hollywood Towers by Westgate condo project) will offer 5,200 rooms, making it one of the largest resorts on the Strip. Earl plans to compete with MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay - once this pesky remodel thing is finally finished.

NORM: Kerkorian steps out in Las Vegas.
Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian’s second visit to a Riviera showroom in recent weeks has tongues wagging.
The 89-year-old MGM Mirage mogul arrived with six bodyguards and two ladies at the “Crazy Girls” topless revue on Thursday night. The week before, he was with a group that attended “La Cage,” the Riviera’s long-running drag queen show.
On of the world’s richest men, with a worth of $8.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine, Kerkorian is rarely seen at the Strip’s racier productions.
He is the majority owner of MGM Mirage. Kerkorian launched the era of the megaresort in 1969, when he built the 1,512-room Las Vegas Hilton, then the largest hotel in the world. He upped the ante again with 2,000- and 5,000-room giants.
“La Cage” headliner Frank Marino said he didn’t recognize Kerkorian and introduced himself to members of the group after the show.
Included in the group, which occupied all four of the showroom’s VIP booths, was “a very sweet lady who introduced herself as ‘Mrs. Kerkorian,’” Marino said. She had purchased tickets for the entire party, he said.
“I thought it was the queen of England,” Marino said. “I’ve never seen that much security around a star in my 20 years here, and we’ve had everybody from Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston.”
The other woman in the party was believed to be Rose Pechuls, Kerkorian’s sister.

WORK IN PROGRESS.
Flamingo president Don Marrandino admits he took a gamble. But he remains confident that new headliner Toni Braxton is on track to silence her critics.
Responding to some harsh first-week buzz, Marrandino said, “We took a ballsy move, but I think we have a winner. A month from now, it’s going to be something special.”
One published report characterized the show as a “train wreck,” while others were of the mind that it needed a bit more re-engineering.
Marrandino said it’s a matter of giving the show time to gel and having the six-time Grammy winner get acclimated.
People bring up that Braxton “wasn’t out there for a while,” said Marrandino. “She shut it down to be a mother. She’s trying to learn how to be a Las Vegas entertainer, and it’s a hell of a lot different.
“We’re working on lighting, sound, song sequencing. Her fans love it,” he said. “Critics would say it’s not Vegasized enough. It’s going to get there.”

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Clint Holmes ready for new project.
This would have been nice five years ago.
On Monday, local PBS station KLVX-TV, Channel 10, ran “An Evening with Clint Holmes” as part of a pledge drive. Essentially a record of Holmes’ nightly show at Harrah’s, it seems ideal for public-TV pledge fare — complete with the requisite rendition of “The Music of the Night”– delivered to the perfect demographic of viewers who would seek out Holmes’ show in Las Vegas.
“It’s funny how these things work out,” says the entertainer. “Here we are six weeks from closing, and we get probably the biggest exposure vehicle since we’ve been here.”
But the singer says this in a lighthearted way. Instead of being bummed out that Harrah’s opted not to extend his contract — giving the showroom to Rita Rudner and, most likely Wayne Newton — he is entirely fired up about something else.

NORM: New ‘Rocky’ eyes Vegas premiere
The world premiere of “Rocky Balboa,” the sixth and final film in Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” series, could be held in Las Vegas and Philadelphia before its Dec. 22 release, it was learned Sunday.
Robert Earl, Planet Hollywood chief executive, said talks have been ongoing.
Planet Hollywood, the new owner of the Aladdin, hopes to have a $100-million-plus makeover completed by early next year.
Stallone has been a Planet Hollywood investor since the 1990s when Earl’s celebrity connections also brought Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Arnold Schwarzenegger into the restaurant chain.
Earl, who lives in London and Orlando, Fla., has been in Las Vegas finalizing details on a deal that would bring the Miss America pageant back to the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood for another year.

SHOOTING STARS: ‘Ka’ provides backdrop for ‘CSI’ opener.
By Carol Cling/Las Vegas Review Journal
The scene of the crime returns to Las Vegas this week for CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”
Set in Southern Nevada but based in Southern California, “CSI” visits its hometown periodically, but usually on special occasions — such as the series’ seventh season opener.
Locations for the two-part episode range from the MGM Grand, where Cirque du Soleil’s “Ka” provides a backdrop, to downtown’s Plaza and its porte cochere.
Stars William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger and George Eads are expected to make the trek, according to producer Louis Milito.
“Ka” entered the picture when Cirque officials approached “CSI” counterparts during a preliminary scout and invited them to “keep Cirque in mind” for a future visit, according to Jessica Berlin, Cirque’s assistant public relations manager.
More than 20 “Ka” performers will be involved in the “CSI” shoot; the season opener is scheduled to air Sept. 21.

Toni Braxton is in heaven, which, to her, is suburban Las Vegas. No, really. Neither a fat, lucrative contract nor encouragement from mentor Gladys Knight were enough to persuade her to take her new headlining gig at the Flamingo. What it took, the sexy chanteuse insists, was a drive through the outskirts of town.
“When I saw how suburban it was, I was like, ‘Oh my God, I love Las Vegas!’” she explained as she drove around her new neighborhood of Southern Highlands in late July. “I can definitely do this!”
And so she has. On Aug. 1, her 19-song concert production, Toni Braxton: Revealed, opened in the same space Knight filled repeatedly for years and, more recently, was home to Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton. She’ll perform six nights a week in six-week spurts through March, then decide whether to keep going.
The pressure, the 38-year-old pop star known for “Breathe Again” and “Un-Break My Heart” admits, is real: “I’m definitely nervous. This is like a big deal. This is a really huge deal. But I don’t look at it like I’m replacing Gladys or Wayne, because they helped me get there.”
It was Knight, whom she affectionately calls “Mommy,” who anointed her more than a year ago by telling her, “Baby, I’m gonna be leaving; I think you’d do great here. You could be a mom, it’s a good career move. I think you should do it.”
Indeed, Revealed is the latest upswing in a varied career that has seen its share of dramatic highs and lows. Her first two records, the self-titled debut and her sophomore smash Secrets, sold a combined 15 million copies, produced eight Top 10 hits and earned the petite Maryland native five Grammys including Best New Artist. But by this decade, she had faded from the scene, and her most recent two albums produced no hits. Still, she spent much of that same period appearing on Broadway — as the first black female lead of Beauty and the Beast in 1998 and in Aida in 2003 — and says she slowed down to focus on her two boys, Diezel and Denim.
Now, though, she’s ready to raise her profile again.
“It’s a huge benefit (to be a Strip headliner),” Braxton said. “It allows me to still be in the mainstream so when I decide to put out an album, I’ll still be remembered. This is a great way to keep my music and me out there.”

The Phantom of the Opera’s Christines

Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular
Where: Venetian
When: 7 p.m. Sun. & Thurs. 7 & 10 p.m. Mon., Wed., Fri. & Sat.
Cost: $107, $132

With a title like Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular, it’s easy for visitors to imagine Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical masterpiece being performed in a tank of water with French midgets dressed in period costumes bungee cording from the ceiling while a topless, feathered and bejeweled Christine breaks into a jazzed-up rendition of “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.” Luck and good taste prevailed, however, and the above-mentioned production is only a dream.
But the slim-lined production in the custom-built, $40-million Phantom Theatre is spectacular. The wonderful special effects, lavish sets and costumes, daring stunts and masterful lighting provide ambience for the true jewel of the night — the two actresses who magnificently portray opera hopeful Christine Daaé.
Sierra Boggess (pictured right) and Elizabeth Loyacano alternate in the persona of the Parisian gal “who just wants to sing.” Even though both Boggess and Loyacano are perfect for the role, their interpretations are as different as the actresses. According to Loyacano, famed director Hal Prince “provided a skeleton (of the character), and we were allowed to embellish.
“We’re a different age, and we both have very different personalities, so I think those things augment the character,” Loyacano said. This helps to explain why the younger Boggess presents a Christine who is so believably innocent she unwittingly becomes open game for the sinister Angel of Music. It also makes sense why Loyacano’s leading lady glows a bit more outwardly when she falls in love with her childhood sweetheart. Both imbue the character with vivid emotions.
Boggess, a Denver native, first saw Phantom when she was 13. She joined the cast after playing Cosette in the Broadway national tour of Les Misérables. She said both she and Loyacano have an edge over other actresses who have played the heroine of the opera. “Since the show is cut down, you’re onstage (for) most of it. You basically are Christine for 95 minutes, which makes it easier to get where you need to be emotionally by the end.”
Loyacano, who appeared in The Woman in White on Broadway, said she loves the costumes. “They’re just incomparable to anything I’ve ever worn,” she said. “And with the exceptions of a few fabrics that were unfortunately discontinued, all of the costumes are the same design as the original Broadway production.”
Both actresses love the shorter version. None of the original songs were cut, and both Prince and Webber carefully edited, they said. The actresses are happy that their musical numbers, especially the enchanting “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again,” were retained.
“I really enjoy singing that song even though it wasn’t my favorite thing to sing at all when I started the show,” Boggess said.
“It has so many colors in it, and as a character, you have a chance to grow up and evolve. Plus, I love the melody,” Loyacano said.
Discussing the longevity of the Vegas production, Boggess said it will do very well. “It has a great story, beautiful music, and all these effects that make you feel like you’re at a party while you watch a show.”
“Phantom has a devoted following,” Loyacano said. “I met a young man who had seen the show 14 different times and made the trek from San Francisco to Vegas just to see it here. I think it will last a long time.”

John Katsilometes on an idea whose time (maybe) has come: John Tesh headlining a gospel brunch at Wynn Las Vegas.
Coming soon: Gospel Brunch with John Tesh at Wynn Las Vegas.
Far-fetched? The pairing of gospel music and soul food with the person once known as the Whitest Man in America might seem as such. But Tesh provides a persuasive account as to how this could, in fact, happen.
“I have talked to Steve Wynn about doing a deal once a month,” Tesh said Monday during a phone interview from his office in Sherman Oaks, Calif. “I know it sounds weird - I’m 6-6 and white and I’m kind of a sleepy piano guy. ¦ But I could get people like (gospel artists) Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin and Shirley Caesar involved and it would be great.”
To further enhance this proposition, Tesh has been brought in by Wynn to perform at private VIP parties at Wynn Las Vegas, and Tesh’s wife, Connie Selleca, is a friend of Elaine Wynn.
“Who knows?” he said. “But we have been in contact, yes.”
Tesh has remained prominent in Las Vegas with “The John Tesh Radio Show” (aka “Intelligence for Your Life”), which last week landed at KJUL 104.7-FM after moving from KSTJ 102.7-FM (which has moved Kelly Hawkins into the nighttime spot formerly occupied by Tesh). The standard format at KJUL should be more friendly to Tesh’s rapid-fire, random advice-driven program than the ’80s format, where listeners tune in primarily to wax nostalgic over the Romantics and Soft Cell. “Some formats just don’t work,” Tesh said. “Listeners tell me that the music is just a palate cleanser to get to the next news item.”
Tesh is astonishingly popular across the country, being carried by about 240 affiliates nationwide. We’ll close with a couple of classic tidbits assembled by his crack 10-person research team: Always wear blue to important meetings (it is a subversively powerful color), throw dishwashing sponges (a haven for germ breeding) into the dishwasher or microwave oven for sanitizing every other day, and the amount of time one should spend brushing his (own) teeth is the same duration of the song, “Yellow Submarine.”

Elvis Deals Blackjack Contest at Imperial Palace.
Eighteen blackjack players at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino will be singing “Viva Las Vegas” if Elvis brings them good luck on Saturday, Aug. 19, as he deals each of them one hand – with a total of $50,000 at stake.
The blackjack contest has been organized by The Prescription.com – also known as The Rx – as part of their fourth annual Rx bash. The players, who have signed up for free Rx membership, were selected because they won various sports contests on The Rx Web site.
The Rx will put up the $50,000 in bets, divided as 10 at $500 each, five at $1,000 each and one each at $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. If a player wins the hand, he keeps the payoff and The Rx gets its stake back. If a player loses, the Imperial Palace keeps the bet. Players will have to have their own money at the table for any additional wagers such as double-downs or splits, which, if won, will be honored by the IP.
Elvis, from the Imperial Palace’s signature “Dealertainer” Pit, will deal each hand separately from a six-deck shoe. The competition begins at 6 p.m. with the smallest bets dealt first.
The blackjack competition follows a poker tournament from noon to 4 p.m. with 150 players competing for $5,000 in prize money. First place will receive $2,500, second place $1,000 and the third- and fourth-place finishers will each win $750.
The public is welcome to watch both competitions.

What You Can (and Can’t) Put in That Carry-On.
Transportation Security Administration Issues New Rules on Carry-On Bags.
Unsure about what can and can’t be taken on board a domestic flight? The rules are still in flux, but the current guidelines and exceptions are listed below. For future updates, visit the TSA’s Web site, and keep in mind that international flights are likely to have tougher requirements: check with your individual carrier in that case.
The trickiest questions involve medicine, be they prescription or not. For both, it’s a good idea to carry documentation that will help prove that the objects are what you say they are. Prescription medicines should be brought in the containers they were dispensed in, and it’s a good idea to also bring along the prescription in case you are questioned. For non-prescription medicines, bringing a note from your doctor will increase your chances of being able to bring the item as part of your carry-on.

In It For The Long Haul.
Passengers have right to dictate routes to cabbies.
This week, readers want to know whether it’s cool to tell a cabbies how to do their job.
Bill and Barb Alft ask: I recently read your article about long hauling. We have been flying to Vegas (from Green Bay, Wis.) for many years and have been taking taxis to the Golden Nugget. This past spring we were long hauled to the airport. The driver was a real idiot and I was very weary of complaining to him or trying to get his name. Is it appropriate to tell drivers what route you want to take? Interstate 15 is a very dangerous way to take to and from downtown, but the drivers often go this way.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Society of Seven is back with a stint at the Flamingo.
By Mike Weatherford/Las Vegas Review Journal
You can’t keep a Society of Seven down. The venerable Hawaiian show band returns to the Strip on Aug. 16 with an afternoon show at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
The group again shares billing with Lani Misalucha, the Filipina pop singer recruited to add some sex — and youth — appeal to the ticket for its afternoon show at Bally’s last year. When that contract ran out, Harrah’s Entertainment gave the berth to a live version of “The Price Is Right.”
But now the same parent company is bringing the group back for five 3 p.m. shows per week, to share the Flamingo’s main showroom with Toni Braxton and George Wallace. Considering Harrah’s also plans to sign Wayne Newton to the Harrah’s Las Vegas showroom for at least half of next year, it looks like the company may be addressing the near-extinction of entertainment attractions for older patrons.

It’s The Norm by Norm Johnson
Took in the long awaited media (and assorted VIPs) opening for The Scintas at the Sahara Hotel the other evening. And, as always with the Scintas, we didn’t go home disappointed. As a matter of record, this writer has never left a Scintas show not feeling better than I did when entering the room, be it the lounge showroom at the Hilton (where they started their Las Vegas run towards the Strip) or the Rio showroom. They know how to build a show and producer David Saxe (he of the “V” Theatre inside Aladdin’s Desert Passage) knows what to do off stage… promote. It’s a perfect teaming of outstanding talent.
Now to the show itself. My only complaint is that the stage, designed originally for a magic show, is too monstrous for any act and needs to be trimmed down a wee bit. Frankie Scinta agreed and said that was being addressed. The opening number is “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” That sets the show in the right direction - Upward, which then leads the group into “Let’s Get Started” followed by “Dance to the Music.” After a few greeting words from Frankie and brother, Joe, Frankie does his standard “spoon” performance (Joe always pretends he thinks it’s not needed), followed by his banjo expertise. Sister Chrissi takes center stage and with a voice created by the Man above sings a beautiful “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Joe and Frankie do a few spoofs, fool around with a couple of songs and conclude this part of the show with Joe doing a great impression of Mick Jagger with “Get Off Of My Cloud” and “Start Me Up.”
Night at The Bootlegger:
Monday night, I decided to take a drive out to The Bootlegger on Las Vegas Blvd, South to visit, once again, with Kelly Clinton and her Celebrity Karaoke Night. As usual the show she puts forth is one you’ll not find anywhere else. Kelly opens the show with a great impression of “Elvis” (she has portrayed him on stage - costume and all - and is a dead ringer for the young Elvis). Carmine, who does a show every Saturday called “Shades of Sinatra” at Capozzoli’s Restaurant on Maryland Parkway, did his thing. Rita of the Marvelettes sang a fantastic “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” who was followed by Renee Dawn and “Make it With You.” The most outstanding performance of the night (from a non-professional stand point) was turned in by Erika, a 17-year-old student at Sierra Vista High School. This young lady has all the poise and charisma of a professional singer. I can see her going very quickly up the ladder to stardom. Howie Gold, entertainment manager for the Golden Nugget and his boss, Joe Leone, also proved they could sing. Sitting in the audience and applauding for every act was Clint Holmes, who really supports these special evenings.
Kelly, who has been introducing every act and cracking jokes along the way (she’s great as a stand-up) then got Rita to join her along with Bobby Black (he of the Four Tenors) and Skye from the Hilton show “Menopause The Musical” in an outstanding rendition of “Midnight Train to Georgia,” one of this writers personal favorites. By this time we (Nancy and I) were ready to call it a night. Then Kelly introduced Gary Marshal so we stayed for him and then left. It was another wonderful night of entertainment. You can take it in any Monday evening. The show starts at about 10 p.m., but I would strongly urge you to get there early as it fills up pretty quick.

KRAVE Renames Showroom
KRAVE Entertainment, LLC. today announced that its intimate showroom will be renamed The Harmon Theater. Formerly known as the Krave Theater, the 250-seat venue will host multiple entertainment offerings, including, “The Sopranos Last Supper,” “Funny Business Comedy Club,” “John Stagliano’s Fashionistas” and the recently opened, “Shag With A Twist.” It will also remain the site of the popular KRAVE Nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights.
Since opening in 2004, KRAVE has established itself as the preeminent gay and alternative nightclub in Las Vegas. The Harmon Theater adds a versatile free-standing Las Vegas Theater venue that offers quality entertainment not defined by gender orientation.
“KRAVE has emerged as the most popular gay and lesbian destination in Las Vegas, but our showroom has evolved to now offer four shows that have wide mass appeal,” said Bill Huggins, club director. “It was important to differentiate the venues, but still provide our patrons world-class entertainment in an atmosphere that fosters diversity and inclusion.”
To prepare for the rebranding, The Harmon Theater recently augmented the state-of-the-art sound system, increased lighting grids and renovated the video projection system. The multi-use facility features a full-service kitchen and several bars, and can be configured to offer Theater-style, cabaret or banquet seating and is also available for corporate parties and group bookings.
The Harmon Theater Box Office provides patrons with a convenient point of sale for tickets for all shows. Tickets are available in person, via telephone at 702.836.0836 or on-line at www.harmontheater.com. The box office is located inside the Krave Lounge at 3663 Las Vegas Blvd., South, and is open Friday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to midnight. All major credit cards accepted. The Harmon Theater is also located at 3663 Las Vegas Blvd. South, south of the Aladdin at the intersection of Harmon Ave. and the Las Vegas Strip. Valet parking is available at the Harmon Ave. entrance of Desert Passage.
“With rapid construction and other rebranding projects currently underway at the Harmon intersection, now was the perfect time to rename our showroom,” added Mr. Huggins. “As these other projects are completed, the dust will clear and The Harmon Theater will be perfectly positioned to be a prominent entertainment venue at the most exciting corner of the Las Vegas Strip.”
About the shows:
The Sopranos Last Supper: The spoof on the hit TV series is nonstop fun with live music, singing, dancing, dining and drinking. Spend an evening with The Baritones and family for the most fun of your life and the best dinner theater in Las Vegas. Remember to come hungry for a five-course all-you-can-eat Italian dinner.
Funny Business Comedy Club: A top-rated comedy/variety show, Funny Business features the top comics on today’s circuit, starring Pudgy “The Queen of Tease” who’s credits include HBO and Showtime, Regis and Kelly, Rosie and VH1 and also starring Dave Russo, from E! Entertainment Network, and Comedy Central with Dave Chappel. Funny Business Comedy Club will leave the audience breathless with laughter.
John Stagliano’s Fashionistas: The Fashionistas, John Stagliano’s erotically-charged tale of fetish and fantasy, has been chosen as one of “Las Vegas’ 10 Best Shows,” by the Las Vegas Review Journal. This marks the first ever appearance for a show of this kind on The R-J’s 10 Best List, which beat out such mainstream high-budget productions as Celine Dion’s “A New Day.”
Shag With A Twist: Retro-cool fun, “Shag With A Twist” serves up a colorful cocktail of music and dance at this whimsical murder mystery set at a 1960s Tupperware party. As if immersed in a cartoon come to life, “Shag With A Twist” brings to life a retro era where big hair and pupu platters were the height of fashion.
Ticket prices and showtimes for all shows can be found at www.harmontheater.com.

From “Eye On Vegas”
Nightclub Gossip.
It has been some time since Vegas saw a nightclub opening as everyone eagerly anticipates the next wave of nightlife offerings. With former Light Group partner Sean Christie on the search for his next adventure, Los Angeles millionaire tycoon Sam Nazarian trying to buy his way into Sin City, and several properties seemingly shopping nightlife space, the rumors are flying fast and furious. Adding fuel to the fire was a late-night meeting between New York nightlife queen Amy Sacco and Morgans Hotel Group nightlife executive Ben Pundole. Sacco, the owner of elite Big Apple hotspot Bungalow 8, was in town taking in the Strip action, getting the lay of the land and apparently having at least preliminary discussions regarding a potential venue at the Hard Rock Hotel, or so it would seem as Morgans’ only Las Vegas real estate to date. Bungalow 8 is a favorite for big money trust fund babies and celebrities who have taken to partying in Sacco’s intimate spot without the hassle of autograph seekers or paparazzi. That’s not the only nightlife gossip we’ve heard this week as one spy called us whispering about yet another Studio 54 takeover bid, this time from South Beach haven Mansion. Representatives from MGM Mirage declined that any meetings had taken place and that company policy doesn’t allow for statements on rumors. But wait, there’s more! Big Apple nightlife guru Jon B. seems to be in big demand. After having conversations with New York-New York regarding bringing one or both of his Chelsea hotspots, Home and Guesthouse, to Sin City, rumors have him now in discussions with Wynn Las Vegas regarding the LURE Ultra Lounge space. Hmmm, interesting indeed, although Wynn wouldn’t confirm the rumor, of course. Lastly, Nazarian spent another weekend in town, hanging out with the girls from MTV’s reality sitcom Laguna Beach, but still does not have a deal in place.
For Him Show.
FHM Magazine has tentatively slated plans to get into the Vegas action in the form of a Las Vegas revue that is currently in pre-production. Sources tell the Eye that the show would feature cameo appearances from the various celebrity cover girls gracing the pages of FHM, and although the project has not signed with any particular venue, that it has been received with tremendous local response. The show would be heavily promoted through the magazine and their various media outlets around the globe. With East Coast deal maker JoAnne Serdar involved in the project we lend more credibility to these rumors than they would otherwise normally warrant. This would seemingly follow publication branding running wild up and down the Strip, including the Maxim Magazine steakhouse entering at the Hard Rock, the potential Maxim Hotel which would include a Blender Magazine concert venue and, of course, the revival of the Playboy Club at The Palms Resort.
MonoFail.
A report out of California has local transportation officials discussing replacing the palm tree laden Strip median with an express lane for buses. According to the report, it would become part of a transit corridor stretching 33 miles from North Las Vegas to McCarran International Airport to Henderson. While officials seemingly indicate the plan could carry a cost of $1 billion and wouldn’t be complete until 2014, they indicate that, get this, “the Las Vegas Monorail hasn’t helped much.” Oh really, that’s a surprise! We’re wondering how bus riders would get from a center median to the sidewalks without building dozens of additional walkways and overpasses. Why can’t someone (like say the city, county or state) take over the monorail and extend it from Henderson, to McCarran, along the Strip, to downtown and Summerlin? We’ll help; just tell us what to do!
Maximum On-Line.
MGM Grand has long been one of the more innovative properties on the Strip, and with the launch of a new Web site, potential guests can get the most of the ‘Maximum Vegas’ experience before they even leave their homes. Not only does their new site list the requisite entertainment, dining and nightlife options on property, but guests can take a fully interactive visual tour on the entire property as well. “Travelers planning a trip to Las Vegas visit our new site and within moments understand why MGM Grand is maximum Vegas. Our unique interactive video showcases the dream Vegas vacation – a dream made reality at MGM Grand with the simple use of mgmgrand.com,” said Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing David Van Kalsbeek. Our two favorite aspects of the new site; a real-time reservation service for the property’s dozen plus restaurants and the ability to receive special promotions and updates on your personalized Yahoo, MSN or Google homepage which can help alleviate the strain on your overused in-box.
