I had a great time in Vegas. Got a personal introduction to Reba McIntire at the Media Party. Saw 3 excellent shows and one that could be an excellent show with some rewriting. I hope to have a Trip Report by next week. Planning to go back towards the middle of July.

Hard Rock sold for $770 million.
From The Las Vegas Review Journal

The Hard Rock Hotel, a pop icon in Las Vegas with its signature neon guitar and concert venue, The Joint, has been sold to New York-based Morgans Hotel Group for $770 million, Hard Rock founder Peter Morton said Thursday.

The sale, pending regulatory approval and other conditions, includes the 647-room hotel and 30,000-square-foot casino on 17 acres at Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue, 24 adjacent acres that were planned for a hotel-condo expansion and related intellectual property.

Morton will receive about 95 percent of the net proceeds from the sale and said he doesn’t plan to develop any other properties in Las Vegas, gaming or otherwise.

CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR COMING TO LAS VEGAS HILTON

ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF THE BROADWAY SENSATION
‘BEATLEMANIA’ PERFORMING LIVE WITH 42-PIECE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Classical Mystery Tour, a tribute to The Beatles featuring original members of the Broadway sensation “Beatlemania,” performs live in concert with a 42-piece symphony orchestra at the Las Vegas Hilton on May 28.

The musicians in Classical Mystery Tour look and sound just like The Beatles, but CMT is more than just a rock concert. The show presents some 20 Beatles tunes sung, played, and performed exactly as they were written, such as “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section and “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet. From Beatles music on through the solo years, Classical Mystery Tour is the best of The Beatles heard totally live.

Classical Mystery Tour features Jim Owen (John Lennon) on rhythm guitar, piano, and vocals; Tony Kishman (Paul McCartney) on bass guitar, piano, and vocals; Tom Teeley (George Harrison) on lead guitar and vocals; and Chris Camilleri (Ringo Starr) on drums and vocals. Martin Herman conducts the 42-piece symphony orchestra.

“We really make an effort to sound exactly like the originals,” explains Owen, who admits that he and the other three BEATLEMANIA members are big Beatles fans. “The orchestra score is exact, right down to every note and instrument that was on the original recording. For example, on ‘Got to Get You Into My Life,’ we have two tenor saxes and three trumpets. That’s what it was written for, and that’s what we use.”

From the recent celebration of the 40th anniversary of The Beatles’ triumphant visit to the U.S., to the success of The Beatles Anthology and The Beatles 1 Album, the demand for Beatles material is greater than ever.

The Classical Mystery Tour is presented in the Hilton Theater on Sunday, May 28 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $55 & $70 (plus tax and service charge). Tickets can be purchased at the Las Vegas Hilton box office or by visiting www.lvhilton.com or calling 702-732-5755 or 1-800-222-5361.

The Venetian is being discussed as the site for the new Tavern on the Green; last week the famed Central Park restaurant said it is making plans to expand to Vegas. The Venetian’s Palazzo Ballroom, near the end of its Restaurant Row, would be the site.

Yeah, yeah, yeah: Beatles fans excited about the role Sir George Martin will play in producing the soundscape for “Love” at the Mirage should know that Martin’s hearing loss makes it unlikely he’ll play much of a role in actually assembling the music on the tracks. In 1994 Martin left the production of the Beatles’ “Anthology” singles to ex-ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Martin’s son, Giles, is also on board as a producer of the “Love” soundscape and CD and will likely use his ears for the project.

Celine Dion’s wax twin was unveiled Sunday in the lobby at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace before her 500th performance there. It marked the first time the famed Grevin Wax Museum of Paris dedicated a wax statue on U.S. soil. Dion’s likeness is wearing the same dress she wore when she sang the Grammy- and Oscar-winning “My Heart Will Go On,” the “Titanic” theme song, at the 1998 Academy Awards.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: ‘Dragapella’ hopes for new gig.
From The Las Vegas Review Journal

Last week, this space carried an “exit interview” with Harvey Fierstein, who performed “Hairspray” in drag and never intended to stay in the show more than three months.

Today, another drag actor, Ben Schatz, packs up his wig and returns to the road with his three “Dragapella” co-stars. The difference is Schatz had hoped to stay indefinitely.

The satiric revue came to the Las Vegas Hilton chasing the fantastic success of Barry Manilow and “Menopause The Musical.” It proved to be one more show than the casino’s convention-driven traffic would support. The producers threw in the towel Saturday.

Riding a crazy horse through physical perfection
By Justin Jimenez from Las Vegas Magazine

La Femme
Where: MGM Grand
When: 8 & 10:30 p.m. Wed.-Mon.
Cost: $59

1951. The Korean War is reaching a grotesque level and dividing the world, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill is re-elected and President Truman declares the official end to war with Germany. News dominated; art was far away from dinner table conversation. The slippery path of political correctness was being paved.

Yet an antiques dealer nestled in France found sanctuary not in the trendy social grace, but through contemporary taboo. Taking his obsession with the American Western movie genre–the saloons and gritty unrefined nature of the era–juxtaposed with his adoration of the precise and flawless female body, Alain Bernardin made an unlikely connection. The Crazy Horse was born, known today in Las Vegas as La Femme.

Embodying the Eighth Arrondissement of Paris, the show has kept Bernardin’s promise of “l’art du nu,” or the elegant exposition of the nude, alive for over half a century while pushing the accepted limit of public nakedness.

The show remains an intense hybrid of burlesque and fine art, going way beyond the American idea of a striptease but still feeding audiences with subliminal sexual postulation. The fulfilling erotic delivery is fueled by the simple yet endless variety and splendor of lighted skin.

Bernardin was on the fringe of the cultural surge of the 1960s and La Femme still reflects that innovative awareness today, the main factor in its worldwide success. New Wave cinema, Europe’s neorealism, pop art, the Nouveau Roman and avant-garde fashion all seep into the intimate production.

It’s unfortunate we live in a civilization where flesh often finds connotation with sin. The question of what’s socially acceptable has resurfaced; art again has taken a backseat to politics. Yet unwavering, the soul of the titillating Parisian stallion lives on.

As the Crazy Horse turns 55 on May 19, the nightly celebration in MGM’s La Femme Theatre is very appropriate. The romance of Europe’s venue blends nicely with Vegas’ insatiable appetite for gorgeous women and seductive shows, yet schools the Strip on how nudity can be presented as an objet d’art.

La Femme demonstrates the grandeur and elegance of the female form with complete taste, reminding us that our bodies are a celebration we can rejoice in without embarrassment.

In an age of theater where multimillion-dollar sets become the stars of the show, the Americanized Crazy Horse instead hones in on quality casting and choreography. The lighting is simple but deliberate. Each segment is self-contained, lending more to a vision of several productions bound by seductive images than a linear performance.

A mosaic of humanity, an evolving time capsule, La Femme is a reminder that true beauty lies in creation, including our own external existence.

Mystère’s resurrection of the senses
By Justin Jimenez from Las Vegas Magazine

Mystère
Where: Treasure Island
When: 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. Wed.-Sat.; 4:30 & 7:30 p.m. Sun.
Cost: $95
Info: (702) 492-3960 or (866) 80-SHOWS

Dr. Seuss’ imagination looks dull by comparison. Visually bewitching, audibly extraordinary and physically mind-boggling, Mystère is a glimpse into an enchanting realm where we all wish we could stay. The world’s most multifarious circus, Cirque du Soleil continues to solidify its theatrical dominance in America’s Entertainment Capital.

The fantasia-like theme of Mystère is deceptively complex, with the creative components delivering a story with almost infinite interpretations. Innocence screams through majestic evolution, time collides with itself as past and future folds into the present. Humor is interlaced throughout; a mischievous clown is a constant reminder that nothing is above humanity and nothing is too perfect to disturb.

The cast storms the stage in a kaleidoscope of art, athletics, music and creativity, birthing a journey that mesmerizes the subconscious just as much as it does the eyes. Androgynous, athletically ripped performers bounce around like lemmings frolicking on a child’s dream playground. An amped-up teeter-totter sends the little ones up and away, and trampolines spring into a new art form.

The percussion is a show in itself. The drums provide an orgasmic level of sound, swinging from the ceiling and filling the room with convulsing rhythms. A series of musicians follows suit with live vocals and musically poetic blends of woodwinds and strings.

An oversized infant serves as a joyous guide. With laughter and naivety, the round toddler explores the unique new world hand-in-hand with audiences. Confronting bizarre creatures in his search for a father, the big baby glues together the show, embodying the childlike wonder in each ticket-holder.

High-flying acrobatics pierce the space with aerial stimuli in an elevated ballet, bungees and trapezes replacing the pointe shoes.

Landing as Cirque’s first stationary production here in 1993, Mystère redefined what entertainment is in Las Vegas and has been raising the bar ever since. The custom-built theater retained the intimacy of the troupe’s traveling big top. Modeled after a Greek amphitheater, the venue is fully exploited by the performers scurrying up, around and over the crowd.

The only disappointment rises with the house lights at the end of the show, as the 90-minute dream world will not be one you will want to wake from. Bon voyage.

Tao Las Vegas Wins Accolades at the 4th Annual World Club Awards

Tao, Las Vegas’ premier nightclub, won two prestigious awards that are voted upon by industry leaders and nightclub peers at the 4th Annual World Club Awards in Miami. Awards were presented on Friday, March 24 at crobar 24 @ Nocturnal where the nightclub elite convened for the biggest award show in the nightlife realm. Tao was nominated in the “Best New Venue” and “Best Interior Design” categories against powerhouses of the club industry from around the globe and dominated.

Since its opening in September 2005, Tao is deemed one of the hottest clubs on the planet by club goers from around the globe. Winning “Best New Venue” is a huge achievement for Tao beating many highly touted clubs including the awards host venue, Nocturnal. “We built a place that’s going to become an institution in Las Vegas and a flagship venue for the Tao brand around the world,” said co-owner Noah Tepperberg. “I think this place will be one of the major nightlife facilities for a long time.”

Winning the “Best Interior Design” award is a much-revered category. Including elements such as a 20-foot Buddha and a koi pond, interior design company Studio Gaia created Tao to resemble an ancient temple in the middle of new Las Vegas. The Monk Bar, which features 271 carved wood monk figurines holding bowls of water and candles on a terraced wall epitomizes the Tao theme.

For those craving a high energy, DJ driven atmosphere, the 10,000 square foot Tao Nightclub is the place to see and be seen, with three full-service bars, two main rooms playing a variety of hip hop, house and rock ‘n’ roll music, and state-of-the-art audio and lighting systems. For guests seeking ultra-VIP treatment, the nightclub offers eight private skyboxes, each featuring European bottle service, a mini-bar, an espresso machine and banquettes with secured purse drawers. A voyeuristic design throughout, the nightclub allows people to see the entire venue from almost every point in the room, while sexy performance vignettes, including nearly nude bombshells taking rose petal baths, can be seen nightly. The nightclub also boasts a 40-foot outside terrace with awe-inspiring views of the famed Las Vegas strip.

Celebrity-filled events are a constant at Tao, past events include Tommy Lee’s birthday party; the after party for the UBID For Hurricane Relief Event attended by stars such as Nick Lachey, David Spade, Seth Green, and Mila Kunis; a Los Angeles Lakers pre-season party; and the Billboard Music Awards “After After-Party,” where music phenomenon Pharrell Williams hosted some of the industry’s hottest stars, including Gwen Stefani, Kanye West, R. Kelly and Lil Jon.

Tao is located on the Grand Canal Shoppes level of The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino at 3355 Las Vegas Boulevard South. In addition, Tao conveniently offers guests an exclusive valet located directly in front of The Venetian. For reservations and information, call (702) 388-8338.

Reliving “gaming” history
By Len Butcher

Remember when convenience stores had pinball machines instead of slot machines and you and your friends tried to get as many points as you could before the “Tilt” sign came on? Those were the days, right, and wouldn’t it be wonderful to relive them? Well, now you can at Las Vegas’ own Pinball Hall of Fame museum.

Opened this past February by Tim Arnold, the museum, located at 3330 E. Tropicana Ave. (northwest corner of Tropicana and Pecos Road next to Tropicana Cinemas) features some 180 machines, dating back to the turn of the last century — and all playable for either 25 or 50 cents.

There is no admission fee, says Tim’s wife, Charlotte, and everyone is welcome to come in, browse around and play the games. The museum is the dream of Tim, 50, who has been collecting the machines since he was 14. Charlotte says her husband went into the business of running video arcades back in the ’70s, but “never gave up on his love of pinball machines. They’re his version of very large baseball cards. Unfortunately, he can’t keep them in a box under the bed, so the majority of them are stored in a 10,000-square-foot building in our backyard.”

The only problem, says Charlotte, is that unlike refrigerators, they’re not mechanically reliable. “They take a lot of upkeep–light bulbs, rubbers, coils, things like that. They were never meant to last forever, so Tim has had to rebuild around 500 of them.” The biggest problem is finding parts.

“There are no longer any pinball parts manufacturers and each manufacturer had a different system and gauging, so luckily, Tim’s a pack rat, and he will often have duplicates of a game.” Many of the games have names tied to movies or TV shows. “You couldn’t use the same names so they would come up with something close. For instance, we have one game where the back glass (the upright glass portion at back of machine) is a dead ringer for the movie My Fair Lady. It’s called Mayfair and came out the same time the movie did. So you had a lot of tie-ins during this period. But sometimes this can backfire. A game that killed one of the pinball companies was Barbed Wire, a takeoff on the 1996 movie of the same name. “It was a bad movie, bad concept and bad game,” says Charlotte, “but somebody obviously wanted to meet Pamela, and spent way too much money on the rights to use that image.”

Every three to five months, Tim features a new theme at the museum. “If it’s going to be a casino theme, he will go through his collection and pull out all the games that are Las Vegas-casino related. There’s one called Las Vegas, another The Flamingo, and yet another Tropicana and so on. Same as if we did a theme on cowboys. This way we keep it fresh and something new for those repeat visitors.” Of which, says Charlotte, there are many, including many from outside the U.S., particularly from Germany, “who are fanatics about pinball machines.”

Pinballs, she says, have gone through three stages over the years, beginning with electro-mechanical machines, advancing to digital, then to electronic. Purists, like Tim Arnold, prefer the electro-mechanicals.

All the machines you see in the museum, and in Tim’s collection, are for sale, and as you can imagine, are real collector’s items. But money is not the driving force in the Arnold’s business. “We are a truly non-profit company and anything we make over our costs goes to the Salvation Army. It’s something we have always believed strongly in and over the past seven years have donated some $300,000 to charities. We’re very proud of that.”

The museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Bringing a TV icon to stage.

Show based on ‘American Bandstand’ is planned by producer of long-running tribute show.
By Jerry Fink-From the Las Vegas Sun.

Producer John Stuart signed a licensing agreement last week that will allow him to create live stage shows based on an icon of musical TV programs - Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand.”

“We know ‘American Bandstand’ is an American icon and that John Stuart has a lot of experience in this arena,” said Allen Shapiro, president of Mosaic Media, which acquired the rights to “American Bandstand” in 2002 when Dick Clark Productions merged with the Los Angeles-based corporation.

Stuart and his partner, Riptide Entertainment of Texas, are negotiating with the company for TV rights. He says if he gets the TV rights he will create a program similar to “American Idol,” except the contestants will be tribute artists.

LANCE BURTON CELEBRATES 10 MAGICAL YEARS

This June, Lance Burton celebrates 10 years of magic at the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. From his sleight-of-hand tricks to vanishing cars, Burton’s illusions have kept Monte Carlo audiences spellbound for a decade. With plenty of new tricks up his sleeve, the master magician introduces new cutting-edge magic that will leave fans in amazement.

On June 21, Burton will unveil his latest creation “The Solid Gold Lady.” After working five years to perfect this illusion, Burton will amaze audiences as he attempts to make $10 million in gold bricks disappear. Borrowed each night from the Monte Carlo vault and hand delivered to the stage by armed security, this is the most expensive and amazing illusion in Burton’s career.

“It took years of research and development to bring this illusion to the stage,” said Lance Burton, Master Magician. “Randy Morton and everyone at Monte Carlo have been extremely cooperative. At the last minute, there was one little snag in the procedure. Because of insurance concerns, I am not allowed to physically touch the gold! This is going to make the illusion much harder to accomplish but I am not taking this personally; I am not allowed to play blackjack in the casino either. Keep your fingers crossed!”

“At first I thought Lance was joking when he asked us to provide him with $10 million dollars in gold,” said Randy Morton, president of Monte Carlo. “He eventually convinced me that this was for real and I agreed to go along with him. I had only one condition…I made him promise to bring the gold back at the end of the evening.”

Burton said, “I am thrilled to introduce this trick during the special anniversary performance. I think this is the one that people will still be talking about years from now!”

Other amazing new illusions include the spectacular opening in which guests watch as a life-size plastic mannequin transform into a living breathing Burton. Veins, skin, bones, hair and clothing materialize right before their eyes. Another new number called “The Magic Zone” is a one-act play of murder and mayhem where people continually disappear and reappear.

In an attempt to continually top his personal best, Burton has added several components to the show including a newly installed $1 million lighting system and new scenic treatments designed by award-winning scenic designer, Douglas W. Schmidt.

Beginning in June, Burton will offer a special $10 ticket discount on his 10 p.m. performance.

To celebrate 10 years of making magic together, Burton and the Monte Carlo plan to host a private anniversary party June 21 following the performance, which will showcase Burton’s fabulous changes.

“Monte Carlo Resort & Casino is proud to host an evening honoring Lance Burton. Over the past decade, Lance has been a defining element of Las Vegas entertainment with a timeless presence that surpasses the trendy, ever-changing offerings of the destination,” said Randy Morton, president of Monte Carlo. “We couldn’t be happier that Lance has made his home at Monte Carlo.”

Lance Burton performs nightly at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Tuesday and Saturday; one performance at 7 p.m., Wednesday – Friday; dark Sunday and Monday. Tickets are priced at $65.95 and $60.45 per person plus tax. Tickets can be purchased at Monte Carlo ticket outlets, by phone at (702) 730-7160 or (877) 386-8224, or online at www.montecarlo.com.

“Legends in Concert” Begins 24th Year and Nears 5 Millionth Showgoer

When Jay Leno, Jackie Wilson, Prince, the Blues Brothers, Whitney Houston and Elvis Presley take the stage tomorrow night in “Legends in Concert” at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino, they will kick off the 24th consecutive year of the longest-running independently owned production show on the Las Vegas Strip.

“Legends in Concert” debuted May 5, 1983, with impersonators Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Darin and Elvis. Since then, 70 celebrities have been impersonated on the Imperial Theatre stage during 14,076 performances. The most impersonated act has been the man once nicknamed “Elvis the Pelvis,” with 16 different performers paying tribute to the legendary “King of Rock and Roll.”

To date, 4,983,200 showgoers have enjoyed the IP’s celebrity tribute spectacular. Show officials expect to reach the 5 millionth milestone within the next month – and one lucky ticket holder will be in for a big surprise.

During the course of its successful run, several contest winners have appeared in “Legends in Concert.” The shortest performance was for one night by an Elvis from Australia who won a contest televised Down Under titled “Starstruck.” A notable appearance was by a Louie Armstrong impersonator who won an appearance in the show through a contest on “Oprah.” And in January 2005, a Whitney Houston impersonator who was crowned “Legend of the Year” – after beating 16 previous winners from the hotel’s quarterly “Be A Legend” celebrity impersonator karaoke contest – won the chance to perform for one week in “Legends” and appeared in July.

Because of “Legends” ever-changing lineup, many showgoers come back to see multiple performances. However, no one has been more devoted than Laurie Ann Dula from the suburbs of Detroit, who has seen “Legends” 2,054 times since July 1983, when she was 12 years old.

“At first, seeing ‘Legends’ was a novelty,” said Dula. “But I just love the show and I’ve never been disappointed.” Dula saw “Legends” three times when she was here last month and anxiously looks forward to coming out again soon, especially to see her favorite performer, Frank Moore, who pays tribute to Prince.

The Imperial Palace is home to the award-winning tribute show “Legends in Concert” and the Dealertainers™, celebrity impersonators who deal blackjack. The hotel also hosts The Auto Collections, the world’s largest classic car lot with $100 million worth of inventory for sale. Imperial Palace is the most central stop on the Las Vegas Monorail. The resort is famous for “Five-Star-Friendly Service” and includes a race and sports book, 2,640 rooms and suites, world-class gaming and amenities, a seasonal poolside luau, 40,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, 10 specialty restaurants, 10 bars and lounges, state-of-the-art spa and fitness center, business center, concierge service, medical center, chapel and reception facilities.

Golden Rainbow to Stage 20th Annual “Ribbon of Life”

Hundreds of singers and dancers from the best shows on the Las Vegas Strip will dazzle audiences with 20 years of entertainment at Golden Rainbow’s 20th annual “Ribbon of Life” stage spectacular. The show, staged as a fundraiser for Las Vegas-based HIV/AIDS charity Golden Rainbow, is the largest production show of the year in Las Vegas, and takes place June 10 and 11 in the Jubilee! Theater at Bally’s Las Vegas.

The “Ribbon of Life” production has earned its reputation as one of Las Vegas’ biggest productions, with casts typically reaching more than 250 strong. This year will be no exception, as hundreds of dancers, singers and other performers present some of the best numbers from the past 19 “Ribbon of Life” shows, as well as new creations never before seen on any stage.

The all-volunteer “Ribbon of Life” cast includes performers from the casts of “A New Day,” “Fashionistas,” “Folies Bergere,” “Hairspray,” Krave, “Jubilee!” “Mamma Mia,” MGM Grand Productions, Missy Cochran Entertainment, “Mystere,” “O,” “Splash,” Tim Searcy/Sing Out Loud Entertainment, UNLV Drum Corps, the Vamps Girlie Revue and more. One highlight of the show will feature dozens of famous past Strip performers, ranging in age from their mid-40s to their mid-80s!

The 20th annual “Ribbon of Life” production spectacular is staged June 10 and 11 at 1:00 p.m. each day. Tickets range from $50 to $200 and are available now by calling (702) 384-2899 or online at www.GoldenRainbow.org.

The first “Ribbon of Life” production was staged at MGM Grand (now Bally’s Las Vegas) in 1987, after a performer lived with and ultimately died of AIDS while living in his brother’s garage. Performers from across Las Vegas rallied together to raise money to provide housing, ensuring that what had happened to their friend would never happen again.

MAC Cosmetics Viva Glam is this year’s “Ribbon of Life” title sponsor. Platinum sponsors are Bally’s Las Vegas, Las Vegas Review-Journal and Steinbeck Communications. Gold sponsors are Brenden Theatres, Out Las Vegas/QVegas Magazine, The Idea Factory, Viva Las Vegas and What’s On Magazine. Silver sponsor is Century 21 Money World, and Bronze sponsors are DeLuca Liquor and Wells Fargo.

Since 1987, Golden Rainbow strives to provide housing and direct financial assistance to the men, women, children and families living with HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada. Golden Rainbow also supports HIV/AIDS-related education, and is a recognized Nevada non-profit organization. For information, visit www.GoldenRainbow.org.

From “Eye On Vegas”

Top Chef to Return
Bravo has announced that their hit reality TV series, ‘Top Chef,’ will return for a second season of cut-throat culinary madness pitting 12 contestants who compete for $100,000 and the title of ‘Top Chef.’ The current season, which ends later this month, was a huge success due in large part to Vegas’ two personality-fueled contestants, Stephen Asprino and Tiffani Fiason, who landed on the show thanks to the Eye on Vegas. The finale of this season’s Top Chef will feature live voting from three platforms: cable remote, text messaging and internet to help choose a winner. It will be the first time this multi-platform strategy has ever been used in the United States. The finale, which will be filmed live at the MGM Grand, will also feature a return from superstar French chef, Hubert Keller, and ‘Sopranos’ star, Lorraine Bracco, who will help judge the final dish. “With strikingly intense personalities and intricate challenges, ‘Top Chef’ has a flavor and spice viewers are savoring, making it one of the most successful new cable shows to debut this year,” said Lauren Zalaznick, president of Bravo. “We’re committed to this series and look forward to another successful season showcasing some of the best culinary talent in the country.”

Wynn Keeps Winning
As the awards and accolades continue to pour in for Wynn Las Vegas it is only fitting that its creator now gets some recognition of his own. Time Magazine has selected Wynn Las Vegas CEO and Big Bopper Steve Wynn as one of the ‘100 People Who Shape Our World’ under the Builders and Titans Category. “He didn’t invent Las Vegas — he just makes it work,” the article praised before calling him “the gaming industry’s most brilliant designer.” Wynn will be attending the Time Magazine dinner honoring the 100 movers and shakers in New York City (05/08) as he was already in town for a much-ballyhooed James Beard Dinner that was presented this past Sunday night by seven Wynn chefs and their goddess of wine, Danielle Price (Eye on Vegas Archives – A Wynning Recipe - 04/25/06).

Flamingo Gets Ready to Rock
After a series of sold-out shows in Los Angeles, VH1 Classic is bringing its ‘Rock of Ages’ show to the Flamingo for a seven-day stint starting May 13. The show is an ‘80s, heavy-rock-driven journey about a Hollywood starlet, a wannabe rock star and a floundering Sunset Strip club. Combine a seasoned and talented stage cast and it’s no wonder the show had L.A. rock fans dancing in the aisles. “Rock of Ages is a show that couples the energy of a rock concert with the excitement of a nightclub,” added Don Marrandino, president of Flamingo Las Vegas. “The show reflects the new vibe that the Flamingo is taking on and I think that the people who experience it will want to come back again and again.”

You think we’re not rock-versed enough to give a testimonial? OK then, listen to what these old-hands had to say:
“Amazing!. . .Rocked our world!” - Tommy Shaw
“It’s the next MAMMA MIA!” - C. C. Deville
“This show ROCKED! I loved seeing our music represented so well!” - Neal Schon
“I lived the Sunset Strip in the ‘80s, now you can!” - Vince Neil

PURE Poolside
PURE Nightclub and Caesars Palace have officially announced, what our readers have known for some time; the nightlife entity will operate the Venus Pool Club, a sophisticated, poolside environment that will cater to both locals and hotel guests alike. “We are trying to bring the sophistication and service associated with the night time experience at PURE to Caesars Palace customers during the afternoon hours,” said PMG Managing Partner Robert Frey. Expect amenities like frozen towel service, cooling spritzers and body massages alongside high-end food and beverage offerings. They will also be targeting Monday afternoons for an industry targeted party. Of course our readers read all about the idea back when Amanda Demme broke the news about her PMG partnership only with the Eye on Vegas (Eye on Vegas Archives – Demme Hits Vegas - 04/04/06). Look for the sun drenched madness to start Memorial Day Weekend.

From “The Hilton Hot Sheet”

ELVIS COMING BACK SOON?
Look for an announcement in the near future from the Las Vegas Hilton regarding the return of the Elvis Statue. It was removed from the lobby of the Las Vegas Hilton during the first phase of its multi-million dollar construction and renovation enhancement project. Las Vegas Hilton executives are deciding where the King of Rock and Roll will be displayed. The bronze statue of Elvis was created by Los Angeles sculptor Carl Romanelli and dedicated on Friday, September 8, 1978 as a red velvet curtain was raised before 2,000 fans in the Las Vegas Hilton showroom. Joining Colonel Tom Parker in the audience were Las Vegas entertainers Sammy Davis Jr., Robert Goulet, and Rick Nelson.

HOCKEY PUCK, CONGRESS, AND LAW SCHOOL
Ira David Sternberg talks with Don Rickles, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Richard Morgan from the Boyd School of Law this Monday at noon (May 8) on “Lunchtime with Ira,” a weekly radio show broadcast live from the Las Vegas Hilton on KDWN AM 720 TALK RADIO in Las Vegas, carried nationally on Cable Radio Networks (CRN), streamed live (and archived) on www.lvhilton.com, and aired on the Watchit Television Network (Watchit Media, Inc.) channels on Las Vegas Hilton in-room television sets.

PRESENTING PIGSKIN PROJECTIONS
This past weekend, the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook posted its annual projections for all the pro football teams for the upcoming season. This wager, known as “over/under regular season wins,” is one of the more popular wagers during the off season. Team members of the SuperBook, led by Race and Sports Manager Ed Salmons, go into the “war” room and go over each and every team projecting each team’s win totals for the 2006-2007 season. Fans for every team can either bet over or under the posted win total for each team. Some of the more notable teams: the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers have a total of 10 wins, the runner up Seahawks have a total of 10 ½, the Colts are posted at 11 ½ and the 49ers bring up the rear at over/under 5 wins. The SuperBook has all the totals and rules.

FRESH FISH
Two new tanks have been installed at Garden of the Dragon at the Las Vegas Hilton. That’s because fresh crab, shrimp, lobster and rock cod are now being served. The gourmet Asian restaurant overlooks the picturesque Benihana Village.

POKER ROOM PROMOTION
No, we don’t mean promotion as in Andrew (see above), we mean promotion as in the $10,500 “Flush With Cash” that runs May 28 through July 13. Cash prize drawings will be held every Monday through Friday beginning Monday, May 29 at 10:00 a.m. The final drawing will be held Friday, July 14. Three tickets will be drawn daily, and each player on the drawing ticket will win $100 in Las Vegas Hilton casino chips. Drawing tickets are earned for any red card flush (hearts or diamonds) made Sunday through Thursday. Players earn one drawing ticket for each red card flush (hearts or diamonds) made on qualifying days. Must be 21 years of age or older to participate. There are more details available at the Hilton Poker Room.

Hooters Casino Hotel Hosts Great International Chicken Wing Cookoff May 19 - 21

As creator of the world’s best wing recipe (in our opinion), it’s only fitting that Hooters Casino Hotel would be the host for the 2006 Great International Chicken Wing Cookoff.

Created in 2002 by Willie Davison, Northern Nevada’s “Chicken Wing King,” and founder of Hot August Nights, the Great International Chicken Wing Cookoff is free to the public and will take place in the front lot of Hooters Casino Hotel on Fri. May 19 and Sat. May 20 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sun. May 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature a variety of the country’s best wing makers, as well as live entertainment, beer specials, a meet & greet with Hooters Calendar Girls and more. Attendees may purchase $2.00 four-wing sampler plates from the many exhibitors in attendance. Once they choose their favorites, they can re-visit those booths and purchase wings in quantities of 12, 18 or more. The award ceremony to recognize the “wing leader” will take place on Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m.

“I don’t know that there’s a better place to hold this chicken wing cookoff than at Hooters Casino Hotel,” said Richard Langlois, SVP of Marketing for Hooters Casino Hotel. “We couldn’t be happier that Hooters was sought out among every other possible venue to host this event, due to the connection with our world-famous wings. We think they’re amazing, and apparently the ‘chicken wing king’ agrees! This is going to be an incredible event and we can’t wait to see how our ‘wing competitors’ measure up.”

The event will give everyone in attendance from hotel guests to local or out-of-market restaurateurs the opportunity to sample and compare wing preparations from across the country. From smoky to sweet, hot to incredibly hot, the Great International Chicken Wing Cookoff will have it all. And as they say, the secret is truly in the sauce.

Wing Fact: 30 million Hooters “Nearly World Famous” Chicken Wings are sold each year (placed side-by-side, they’d encircle the globe at the equator). Hooters Wings are served mild, medium, hot, 3-mile island or 911.

My four tips for boozing by Ted Newkirk
From: www.accessvegas.com

1. Stock up at a convenience store and/or liquor store. Much, much, much cheaper than buying drinks out and about. However, you’ll often find yourself nowhere near your hotel room. So …

2. There are convenience and sundry stores both downtown and every few blocks along The Strip. Virtually all have huge beverage sections with a wide variety of ice cold booze. The prices are a little jacked up (think $3.00 for a 24 once ” tall boy” beer that will cost you $1.29 at the grocery store), but 24 ounces of beer is going to cost you $7-12 at the hotel bar.

It is 100% allowed to walk right into a casino with beer you bought at the store somewhere (or bought at another hotel). Not a problem. Even if it is a 24 once beer. They might have a problem with a 40 just because it is a big piece of glass. But 24 once can of Bud, Fosters or similar … not a problem.

3. Only buy your drinks at a hotel bar as a last resort. Except for a couple of exceptions (which I’ll get to in a minute), drinks at hotel bars are expensive. Usually $5.00 and up. Way up. If you are in a hotel and need booze, instead go to the gift/sundry shop in the hotel. Most sell cold beer, wine, Mikes (and similar), and hard liquor.

4. Even though spring break features moderate temperatures here (generally in the 70’s or low 80’s*), we have a dry climate. Combine that with booze and you get dehydrated quickly without realizing it. Which compounds your hangover and general energy level. Have a few bottled of water throughout the day and night in between the cocktails or you’ll hate life the next day.
Please visit Ted’s site..it’s great!

More On Drinking From Ted…Notice a theme here by Ted?

Drink: If you’re a low roller, will you actually get free drinks? - Yes … if you are gambling. Here is the Catch-22: If you are sitting and playing a machine (and I mean actually playing it, not simply keeping the chair warm and hitting the play button once every 10 minutes), you will get a free drink from the cocktail waitress. Even if you are playing a penny or nickel machine. You are expected to tip the waitress $1 per drink when she returns with your free drink. Tip her more, you might see her more. Stiff her and it might be a while.

This is especially true if you are playing penny or nickel machines, as these players usually are the worst tippers and yet the most demanding with their drinks. (Vegas is going high-end for a reason: People buying $500 a night suites get what they pay for, and don’t bitch). So you already have one strike against you. Also, you can ask for whatever drink you want, but they won’t be pouring you the good stuff in the nickel area unless you are tipping big time.

Waitresses tip out their bartender at the end of the shift and they have all the control in the world. They can say “vodka and cranberry” or they can say “Grey Goose and cranberry.” And … they can say “I need a good rum and coke.”

Vegas is about cash, even with budget travel. If you are tipping the waitress well, the bartender gets more from the waitress at the end of the night. So the bartender works with the waitress to make sure the best tippers are getting the best drinks (within reason).

Couple of things: You can’t order two drinks at one time for one person. Don’t even try. Also, be nice to the waitress. You can be tipping her well and if you are a jerk, it won’t mean a thing.

Having said all of that, losing $20 (or a lot more) at a machine just turned your drink into a $20 drink. Plus tip.

How Free Is That Drink? Think about it: You sit down and start playing. Unless you start winning right away, you are losing money. Plus, you might not see a waitress for 10-20 minutes. Then she comes and it will be another 10-20 minutes before she gets back with your drink. Remember, she has a large area of the floor to cover, has to get orders from everyone, has to wait while her drinks are made, then has to deliver to everyone.

If you are winning or even breaking even, that is fine. But if you are losing, that gets expensive. Let’s say you start winning and you are up when you order. You are conveniently (for the casino) stuck playing until your drinks arrive. Giving the machine or table plenty of time to take back all of your money. And then some.

My advice? Buy your booze at a convenience or sundry store (whether on the street or the one in the hotel), then go sit down and play. If you are winning, you can enjoy that drink while you order up a new one from the waitress.

It is fine to order another before you finish your first one (even if it is a tall boy you bought at the store). But you can’t order two drinks per person from the waitress. And at table games, you are often allowed to have only one drink on hand. So when you see her coming, finish your first drink.

Slot Reviews by Gayle Mitchell

Reviews are listed by Slot Name, Manufacturer, average hit frequency and payout range offered, (low to high) if information is available.

1) Hollywood Squares - Premier Night: Williams. 2 spins. 86-93%

Continuing with the success of this popular game show series, this one boasts a top box display of a grand limo and searchlights shining on bonus numbers.

One of the bonus rounds occur when three or more Searchlight symbols land on an active payline on the right hand reels prompting the Searchlight Bonus.

Searchlights at the top box light up the credit spots eventually stopping on a value up to 500 coins. However, if two searchlights shine on a credit amount and a Double Pay, the reward is doubled. If Bonus spot is lit up or you line up 3 limo symbols, then it’s on to the Premier Night Bonus.

The set of TV’s Hollywood Squares, a giant tic-tac-toe board is viewed and Joan Rivers via video speaks directing you to pick one of the limo doors or the sunroof revealing the game’s nine celebrities. The player receives five picks to win a tic-tac- toe. If one of the celebrities goes to the Secret Square, there is the possibility of more games.

The scatter pay for this version is for three or more Champagne symbols garnering a win of up to 200 credits depending on your selection.

The spotlight is on you to step right up and play the ‘game of the stars’.

2) Carnival of Mystery - Multi Way: IGT. 14 spins. 85-98%

All wins are paid as scatter jackpots.

Puppets, jesters and floats await the player at the Carnival. Three bonus rounds are available with the possibility of a winning ticket to carry you into another bonus round while racking up credits along the way.

Known as the Jester Games bonus, this feature occurs when five of these symbols are found in the pay window. You are asked to select one of the box symbols for a bonus award.

An additional bonus, the Floating Balls reveal a three-digit award at which time, the balls spin to reveal a second bonus award.

This is where the ticket option comes into play should one of the balls reveal it; it triggers one or more of the secondary bonus games.

The Puppet is one such game where you select 2-3 puppets appearing before you that show either a credit or perhaps a ticket.

Another secondary bonus is Evade the Jester. The bonuses continue until no ticket is found or the Jester shows up.

As you can see, this slot offers a ‘Carnival of Events’ with an explosion of winning combos.

3) Cool Cat Cash: Wms Gaming. 2-3 spins. 84-95%

Cool Cats abound in this game sporting sunglasses or shiny jewelry as they mix in with the assortment of ‘wealthy’ icons of cars, cell phones and cool hats.

Three or more Super Scatter symbols will begin the Super Scatter Bonus even where you get 5, 10 or 15 free Super Scatter spins. All wins are paid as scatters and multiplied by the total wager of the first spin.

The main event occurs when three Safe Symbols lands and a grid of 20 safes appears.

Each safe hides either a cash symbol of 250 credits, a gold bar for 125 credits, a ring=75 credits, a money bag=50 credits or a champagne bottle=25 credits.

You are given five selections and the total bonus increases with the value of the icon revealed.

If you get the Award All, all matching symbols are revealed and the total value of all symbols is yours.

If all five Award All symbols are chosen, the total prize award can be 8250 credits at the 25-line version.

The Coolest Cash is reserved for the Hot Hot Top Jackpot of 50,000 coins.

  2. Was in Vegas may 11 thru 14th, went to Sorprano’s last supper, way to expensive for what it was. Not good at all.
