INSIDE GAMING: Down on the corners
The hottest topic for rumors and speculation on the Strip these days is probably the redevelopment plans for the Harrah’s Entertainment properties at the four corners — the intersection with Flamingo Road. Insiders say to look for an announcement in July or August, but this is likely to be an announcement with a difference. Word is that while Harrah’s competitors have focused on bricks and mortar and dollars, the largest gaming company in the world will plan in terms of people — patrons and workers.

NORM: Sequel might be filmed at Wynn.

Insiders say “Ocean’s Thirteen” producers have been talking to Wynn Las Vegas about basing much of the film at the new resort.

A Wynn rep reached on Saturday said she was not aware that a deal has been finalized.

The Bellagio was the main site of the 2001 remake of “Ocean’s Eleven,” starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia and Don Cheadle, among others.

Clooney had hoped to film this sequel at his new Las Ramblas project with Rande Gerber, but the billion-dollar resort won’t be completed in time.

Your Own Worst Enemy

Learn to have some self-control before hitting the casino
by Bill Burton

Pop singer Pink wrote a song titled “Don’t Let Me Get Me.” The lyrics included the lines, “Don’t let me get me. I’m a hazard to myself. I’m my own worst enemy.”

In the old Pogo cartoon strip, the lead character once said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

Both of these statements apply to many casino visitors. Gaming writers, myself included, constantly describe the house edge the casinos have on all the games. We advise players to seek the best games with the lowest edge, or at least to be aware of the house edge for the games they choose to play. What we sometimes fail to mention is that the player actually has one big edge over the casinos.

Spice Of Life
Diverse talents keep crowds oohing and ahhing.
By Carla Zvosec

V — The Ultimate Variety Show
Where: Desert Passage at Aladdin
When: 7:30 and 9 p.m. daily.
Cost: $29.50, $34.50, $49.50, $54.50, $59, $69, $79, $89
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS

While V–The Ultimate Variety Show may give away its very essence in the title, the name doesn’t offer any hint of the whirlwind pace that this entertaining production presents.

The show kicks off with the playful, wise-cracking comedy of Master of Ceremonies Jeff Hobson, whose quick, sexual innuendo-laden comedy and audience interaction quickly warm crowds and set the momentum for the rest of the show.

Another blast of energy is the seemingly eight-handed, world record-breaker Anthony Gatto, who also uses his head, neck, feet and chin to keep things moving rapidly in his vigorous juggling act that gets audiences cheering and clapping.

Then there’s Iouri and Nikolai, two Russian natives who perform magnificent feats of strength, flexibility and endurance in a challenging hand balancing act that leaves crowds oohing and ahhing. These two work their bodies so hard that it almost leaves you breathless.

Another standout act is Russ Merlin, who’s introduced as the “most unusual act in showbiz.” Bringing four audience volunteers to the stage, Merlin adorns them with humorous-looking masks and assigns each hand gestures to perform when tapped on the shoulder. He then intertwines silly questions and comments with the gestures, and hilarity ensues.

‘V’ offers an evening packed with a diversity of talent and plenty of dynamo. And despite some adult-oriented humor (which goes right over the kiddies’ heads), the show is great for the family.

Frontier’s Final Year by Rick Garman

Looks like we’re getting closer and closer to the official announcement that will put bulldozers in front of The Frontier, the oldest continually operating hotel/casino on The Strip. The owner of the place has filed plans with the Clark County Planning Commission that detail what will replace the six-decade old resort:
There will be no theme, per se, with the original San Francisco homage that had been planned scrapped in favor of more of the contemporary (and some would say bland) design that most new Vegas resorts are going for.
2,800 rooms in a 62-story tower including more than 2,000 standard rooms of approximately 500-square-feet and 700 suites that are 50% larger.
90,000-square-foot casino
half a million square feet of retail space
theaters, restaurants, wedding chapels, and nightclubs including Gilley’s, the country-western bar that is a part of the current Frontier
pool, spa, and health club
meeting and convention space
A 485-foot tall Ferris wheel that will feature 32 enclosed, climate controlled cabins that can accommodate up to 25 people in seats or at the big glass windows. That last one caught your attention, huh? Keep in mind that this particular proposed giant Ferris wheel is different from the proposed giant Ferris wheel that has been bounced around town for years now. That project from a company called Voyager Entertainment has at various times been planned for the lot next to The Aladdin, a new hotel near the Sahara, and the parking lot of The Rio among others. Currently it is being considered as a part of a residential and retail development that will replace the now-closed Westward Ho.

By the way, the day there are two giant Ferris wheels on The Las Vegas Strip is a day I will eat my left shoe.

The owner is planning on financing the resort himself and as a result the $2 billion or so that he needs to come up with is keeping the timetable fluid. He has indicated that the Frontier will most likely stay open through 2006, close in 2007, and its replacement will debut in 2009 or 2010.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: And now for something completely different: ‘Dragapella’

The Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret will be permanently fabulous when the campy off-Broadway revue “Dragapella” settles in for an open-ended run.

The departure point from standard drag shows is that the four stars actually sing rather than lip-sync a la “An Evening at La Cage.” While “Dragapella” is the title, the Kinsey Sicks is the name of the drag quartet performing the satirical revue.

“It’s certainly a very different kind of show than people often expect when they walk in the door,” co-founder Irwin Keller noted in 2004. “Even if they expect us to sing, they really don’t expect it to sound beautiful.”

Future will be magic

Magician keeping options open after Stardust closes
By Jerry Fink

There’s magic in Rick Thomas’ optimism.

For the past 10 months the affable magician has been the afternoon headliner at the Stardust.

Prior to that, he was the afternoon headliner at the Tropicana for eight years.

Both venues are going to be undergoing major changes in the near future.

The Tropicana hasn’t said what its plans are, although the property is not taking reservations beyond April.

The Stardust, on the other hand, isn’t shy about what it has in store for Las Vegas.

Boyd Gaming announced it will close the Stardust in March 2007, tear it down and replace it with a $4 billion project, Echelon Place, which will open in early 2010.

Thomas hasn’t expressed an inkling of concern about the recent announcement that will dramatically alter his future, one way or another.

NORM: He’s singing the songs with idols

Finalists in “American Idol” mixed business and pleasure during a weekend visit to Las Vegas.

Long-haired Bucky Covington and blue-eyed soul singer Taylor Hicks were spotted at the Palms’ Rain nightclub Saturday night.

The 11 finalists were in town to rehearse Tuesday’s 1950s-themed show with Hilton headliner Barry Manilow, who joins them on Wednesday’s show.

While shooting B-roll for the show, the fifth-season contenders got a taste of some rich Las Vegas history: They rehearsed on the showroom stage where Elvis launched his 1969 comeback and performed for the next eight years.

Show Review: American Storm By Rick Garman

The women I was standing in line with before this show were apparently taking wagers on why I was there to see male strippers. Several of them were pleased when I told them I was going to be reviewing the show but there were a couple who must have lost the bet. I’m not sure what their theory was and I decided not to press the issue. So yes, I went to go see male strippers again and while I’m definitely not the target audience for this kind of relentlessly female-centric kind of entertainment I’ve at least managed to find some amusement value out of the other two examples in town, Chippendales and Thunder From Down Under. Both of those shows do exactly what the ladies want and turn the whole experience into estrogen fueled theater of the absurd for the men who happen to tag along. American Storm now playing at The Riviera, however, seemed to fail on just about all of those levels.

The men in this production were winners of a reality television show designed to find the hottest guys in America and then put them on parade for the ogling masses. I didn’t watch the show but most of the audience seemed to be familiar with the cast so that gives them an edge the other “himbo” acts don’t have.

But that’s more or less where the edge stopped. You see, for a male strip show there was a distinct lack of actual stripping. There were a series of numbers that started with the six guys wearing a variety of fantasy-fulfillment gear – from cowboys to military men with a bizarre stop along the way in the hippie ‘60s counterculture. I’m not sure that’s what most women in America immediately associate with “hot” but again, not the target audience.

So they get out there and dance and at most take off their shirts (and a couple of times not even that). Then five of the guys leave and one stays behind to finish the strip routine, parading in front of and through the audience, often bringing an unsuspecting (and preferably soused) participant up to the stage to titillate. The numbers were long on tease and short on skin, leading more than one frustrated woman in the audience to turn the “take it off” catcall into an annoyed demand.

Of course the guys themselves are fine specimens of the species, toned to within an inch of their lives and a little something for every taste. The dancing and production values were fine although there were some questionable moments of taste. I know trying to find taste in a male strip show is like trying to find a cheap hotel room on The Strip, but when they declared the military themed section a tribute to men in combat all I could do is write “no, no, no, no, no” on my notepad.

But in the end, it’s all about the beef and while I refuse to use the catchphrase from a certain fast food commercial from the ‘80s, there seemed to be a bit of consternation in attempting to actually find it at American Storm.

Hooters Casino Hotel Opens Pool with Six-Month Hooters-Style Celebration.

Hooters Casino Hotel will kick-off a six-month Hooters-style poolside celebration to commemorate the grand opening of its poolside paradise. The BACKYARD BASH - a three-day party - begins March 31, and will repeat itself every weekend throughout mid-October.

With the pool’s official opening, guests will be introduced to an infamous Hooters hot spot: Nippers Pool Bar. The original Nippers is located on Great Guana Cay, the largest of the cays in the chain of islands off the shore of Great Abaco, Bahamas. Nippers and Hooters have a long history together (a match made in heaven if you ask us), as photo shoots for the Hooters calendars often take place on the sandy stretch of beach where the original Nippers is located.

On many a night, the fun-loving Hooters executives have sampled the legendary Nippers Juice (now making its Las Vegas debut) - a deceivingly potent fruity drink made with four different Caribbean rums. In fact, it may have been after a few too many “juices” that they got the idea for putting the calendar months in the wrong order. But that’s another story…

Hooters’ tropical pool area features two heated pools, beach sand, palm trees, a lagoon-style waterfall, cabanas, and a 12-person and 60-person hot tub. The 60-person hot tub features a swim-up bar where Hooters girls will serve beverages to soaking guests.

When fun and sun leaves guests feeling famished, Hooters Casino Hotel has a tempting array of poolside dining options from sushi, salads and sandwiches, all the way to those famous wings:

The Bait Shoppe, connected to the pool area, includes both a fresh market with full deli, and a sushi bar. The market features muffins, bagels, fresh fruit smoothies, espresso drinks, and a selection of gourmet salads, sandwiches and wraps. The Shoppe also boasts an intimate sushi bar backed by two sushi chefs, counter seating for 13, and table seating for 28. The delicious menu includes Japanese appetizers, nigiri sushi and sashimi, creative rolls, and of course, sake.

Porch Dogs entertainment venue also opens up to the pool area and offers select items from the Hooters Restaurant menu … most notably, the “nearly world famous” chicken wings served mild, medium, hot, 3 mile island or 911.

These events are free and open to the public.

The world’s first Hooters Casino Hotel features 696-Hooterized Florida-casual rooms and suites fully equipped with the latest amenities. The hotel is conveniently located one block from the famous Las Vegas Strip. While guests can expect to see the more than 200 world-famous Hooters Girls throughout the property, an exciting mix of dining, entertainment and nightlife is also featured, from nine fine-to-funky restaurants and bars, to some of the hottest dance clubs and pool parties in town. The 30,000 square foot “Hooters”-themed casino floor offers approximately 670 state-of-the-art slot and video poker machines and 32 table games – including the Hooters Girl Party Pit - for 24-hour fun. NORM: Craven planning nightmare on Strip
From the LVRJ.

Horror film director Wes Craven wants to scare the pants off Las Vegas crowds.

“If Vegas can take it, we can make it,” Craven told movies.com.

Craven, the twisted mind behind the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, said he’s planning a live stage production called “Wes Craven’s Magic Macabre.”

The idea came after a conversation with the producer of “Riverdance,” who “saw a really scary magic show in Dublin called ‘Magic Macabre,’” Craven said.

“He called and asked me to do something similar in Vegas. I’ve written a script, based on the legend of Faust, about a young magician who’s obsessed with becoming famous. He makes a pact with the devil, of course, and eventually has to suffer through the seven deadly sins.”

Expect no shortage of gore, Craven said. “Lots of people die and blood will fly.”

Plus, there’s an interactive component, so the audience can participate, he said.

SHOW REVIEW: “Matsuri”

Muscling in on the Strip: ‘Matsuri,’ known as the Muscle Musical in its native Japan, offers an odd appeal.
By Mike Weatherford

You’d better be mighty good or mighty different to open an acrobatics show in a town with four Cirque du Soleils and a fifth on the way.

“Matsuri” is both those things and what’s more, it’s relatively simple — at least if you’re watching it instead of trying to explain it. One runs into quite a few people who say “Mystere” is still their favorite Cirque title, because of its direct connection with the audience.

Those same people, I think, will like this one for the same reasons. Some parts of the Japanese revue are familiar and some are strikingly original. But they’re all delivered with an enthusiasm that pulls you right into the exuberance of the youthful, 33-member troupe.

Brett’s Vegas Views

Have to say a “must-see” show is gracing the Splash Theatre stage at the Riviera for a limited engagement through April 29. The show “Matsuri,” which is the number one show in Japan and the first musical production to have ever originated in that country, is very refreshing and appealing on many levels.

In Japan, the show is called the “Muscle Musical” because rather than relying on a script or storyline, the show focuses on athletic creativity. In Las Vegas, the show is called “Matsuri,” which means “festival” and brings out the Japanese origins.

The imported show features 33 incredibly talented cast members, many of which are world-ranked professional athletes, and combines athletics, extreme sports, dance and Japanese tradition into a highly energetic family show that breaks through culture barriers.

There’s no speaking except in a song that’s like our “YMCA,” where the cast gets everyone clapping and spelling “muscle.”

There are many clever numbers with the top one having over a dozen performers dressed as black and white piano keys. The flat key is attached to their back and they take a position on the floor that allows them to do a chin up whenever their key is struck by a person playing a real keyboard on stage. A lot of comedy and athleticism comes from this number where some keys get picked on more than others.

While all the routines are upbeat, two world-ranked athletes make a big impression. One is world champion German wheel gymnast Yasuaki Yoshikawa, who is considered a pioneer of the sport of German wheel gymnastics. The sport invites the gymnast to perform complicated and compelling routines in a big wheel. The other is 2004 Trampoline World Cup winner Daisuke Nakata. He is the only professional trampoline athlete in Japan and won the Japan championship seven years in a row and competed in the 2000 Olympics. His number has him jumping up on a set piece showing a tall building and he spells out with chalk and drawing a heart - “I Love Vegas.”

This show is a very pleasant surprise and running at 4 p.m. Saturday-Thursday and at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Fridays. Tickets are $59.95 general admission, $69.95 VIP seating, and $39.95 for children under 12, call 1-877-892-7469.

Funnyman George Wallace, who headlines 10 p.m. shows at the Flamingo, keeps his shows fresh by interacting with his audience members and by bringing in special comedic and musical guests to perform in his show. Sometimes special guests are announced ahead of time, but more often than not Wallace likes to surprise his audience.

In the past, he’s been joined by such comedians as Chris Tucker and his long-time friend Jerry Seinfeld. Coming up over the next few months, heavyweights in comedy and music including Marla Gibbs, Mark Curry, Candi Staton and Mavis Staples plan to join Wallace onstage during his regular shows.

Beginning April 4 and running through April 29, Wallace will be joined by David Brenner. With these dual-headliner appearances, it will be a toss up as to who will perform first. Tickets for their special performances will be $75, call 702-733-3333.

Wallace is entering his third year at the Flamingo. He’s best known for his “Yo Mama” jokes and his infamous “I Be Thinkin” lines. During each performance, he gives away a multitude of prizes.

Earlier this month, the Silverton ended its underwater fantasy “mermaid” show, “AZURE,” with plans to welcome a brand new underwater entertainment experience inside the aquarium later this year. Meanwhile, the saltwater aquarium remains a remarkable attraction within the casino featuring an octagonal 117,000-gallon aquarium housing over 4,000 tropical fish from all over the world, three species of stingrays and three species of sharks. The aquarium continues to offer its popular daily fish feedings, featuring one of the Silverton’s staff marine biologists undertaking the feedings, outfitted with a full-face communication mask that allows him to interact with guests and answer questions from the audience. The show occurs daily at 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Week after week Gordie Brown’s engaging comedy and mastery of impersonations has delighted Las Vegas audiences. After a nearly two-year run, comedian and master impersonator Gordie Brown will perform his last show at the Golden Nugget’s intimate Theatre Ballroom on Friday, March 31. Brown opened at the Golden Nugget on May 28, 2004. Reserved tickets are $60.50, call 866-946-5336 or 702-386-8100.

For the second year in a row, the Imperial Palace Karaoke Club at Tequila Joe’s has been named Best Karaoke Bar in Las Vegas by James Bartholet, host of “L.A. Nitelife,” a Los Angeles-based television program carried on cable outlets from coast to coast. TJ’s karaoke club won the distinction and plaque based on popularity with clientele and the décor, ambience, staff, sound and lighting of the club.

Since the club’s beginning in September 2003, about 60,000 crooners, divas and American Idol wannabes have taken center stage nightly at 8 p.m. to warble and belt out tunes to their hearts’ content - many of them even in key. With more than 15,000 songs from which to choose, there is music for every taste.

The club has attracted celebrity singers including World Series of Poker champion Scotty Nguyen and pro bowler Liz Johnson,

Comedian Louie Anderson began an indefinite run at the Excalibur last Friday. He’s been performing in Las Vegas on and off for 25 years.

The Hogs & Heifers Saloon downtown has announced that it will begin Blues, Brews and Barbeques on March 26 and continue the fourth Sunday of each month through October. The 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. event will include a barbeque, beer and music.

NASCAR: The Official Store will open a The Shops in Desert Passage at the Aladdin this spring and offer merchandise, clothing and collector’s paraphernalia. Additionally, the store will feature exclusive Las Vegas branded items and will be one of the only stores in the valley officially licensed by NASCAR to sell its merchandise. The NASCAR store will also feature special events, like drivers’ appearances, autograph signings and giveaways throughout the year. The Desert Passage NASCAR store will mark the second outlet of its kind in Las Vegas.

The Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas will serve as Formula One auto racing headquarters for its 18-race 2006 season that begins today. Hofbräuhaus will televise each race on a tape-delayed basis starting at 2 p.m. (PST) on big screens in its beer garden. The upcoming schedule includes the Malaysian Grand Prix, March 19; the Australian Grand Prix, April 2; and the San Marino Grand Prix, April 23. For information, call 702-853-BEER (2337).

Open-wheel Formula One racing is among the most popular sports in Europe. Formula One currently has 11 teams that represent the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. The oldest team is Team Ferrari, founded in 1950, while the Red Bull team made its debut during the 2005 season.

‘CHEF’ FINALE HERE

One of my favorite TV shows, Bravo’s “Top Chef” is heading for a Las Vegas finale.

“Top Chef” judge Tom Colicchio owns Craftsteak and ‘wichcraft at the MGM Grand.

Two competing chefs with Las Vegas ties, Stephen Asprinio and Tiffani Faison, are among the remaining 10 candidates going into Wednesday’s third episode of the show.

The pretentious Asprinio formerly worked at Nob Hill at the MGM Grand as one of Las Vegas’ youngest sommeliers. The uber-catty Faison, who formerly worked at Daniel Boulud’s restaurant at Wynn Las Vegas, has managed to alienate most of the cast and may be operating on borrowed thyme.

The show is set in San Francisco at Hubert Keller’s Fleur de Lys. He also has Vegas ties, with a same-named restaurant at Mandalay Bay.

NORM: PBS crew trailing Holmes for special.
From the Las Vegas Review Journal

A nine-camera PBS crew is shooting the Clint Holmes show at Harrah’s tonight and Thursday night.

The special will air this summer, Holmes said.

He was approached after Gustavo Sagastume, PBS vice president of programming, attended Holmes’ show last fall and met the entertainer backstage.

Sagastume took an interest in the “personal family history,” Holmes said. The background: Holmes was born to a white British opera singer and an African-American U.S. serviceman serving in England.

Now 90, his mother, Audrey, still shows up at his shows and wows the crowds with “Summertime.”

In addition to the special, a live album and studio album will be recorded. Holmes, who is reportedly leaving Harrah’s this fall when his contract expires, is being honored Saturday at the MGM Grand as the “Humanitarian of Choice,” an international charity.

Also performing and accompanying Holmes will be pianist Roger Williams

POKER STADIUM LV’S NEW DRAW.
Some dream of full house at Neonopolis.

FOX Sports Net is turning the televised poker tournament experience into a live spectator sport in downtown Las Vegas.

Three of the movie theaters at Neonopolis are being converted into the Pokerdome, where about 200 people will be able to watch weekly tournaments. Players’ cards will be revealed live on televisions in the arena, and the players will sit behind a soundproof, one-way glass, so they can’t see or hear fans’ reactions, said George Greenberg, executive vice president of programming and production for FOX Sports Net.

“We’re creating the first-ever poker arena, with all the bells and whistles,” Greenberg said. “This is going to be NASCAR for poker.”

CLUB VEGAS: Plan Wisely
Foundation Room is open to the public for partying on Mondays.

The lumpy dude in the fuzzy wuzzy blue-and-purple hat said it all without saying a word. His mere presence in the House of Blues Foundation Room spoke as loudly as his garish headgear, which looked as if it was fashioned from the hide of a punk rock muskrat.

Suffice it to say, he didn’t seem like the type of guy who would plunk down $2,250 a year for the privilege of sipping pricey cocktails beneath exotic paintings of a surrealist turkey and a black Jesus, which are among the many pieces of brightly colored folk art that adorn the Foundation Room’s red upholstered walls.

But it was Monday night, the one evening of the week when this exclusive, members-only club high atop Mandalay Bay opens its doors to all.

Stardust stages its final act.
‘Headlights & Tailpipes’ will bring down curtain.
By Jerry Fink

The topless revue “Headlights & Tailpipes” will be the final production at the venerable Stardust showroom before the venue closes later this year - or early next - to make room for the $4 billion Echelon Place.

“Headlights,” produced by Jeff Kutash and ValCom Inc., premieres April 4.

Kutash has been working on the show for about two years.

He said the production might have languished another three years on paper if the timing hadn’t been right.

Southern Californian Wins $1.1 Million Slot Jackpot at Imperial Palace

Charlo Vanlian of Glendale, Calif., was ready to head to bed in the wee hours Saturday morning after playing $20 at a Wheel of Fortune® slot at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino. But, since he “had been feeling lucky” and his friend was still playing nearby, Vanlian played a little more – and won $1,152,883.61 on a dollar machine.

When the jackpot hit, the 29-year-old security officer said he “felt faint and total shock.” Vanlian, who is getting married in August, said he plans to use some of the money for a down payment on a house, and the winnings will help make things easier with his new life.

The last Wheel of Fortune® slot dollar machine jackpot paid at the Imperial Palace was for $1,449,959.69 in April 2001.

The Hilton Hot Sheet

Shimmer Cabaret, home of Menopause The Musical® and The Kinsey Sicks in Dragapella, at the Las Vegas Hilton has now added themed dance nights to its late night (11 p.m.-3 a.m.) schedule: Wednesday is Latin Dance Night; Thursday is ‘80’s Dance Night; Friday is Disco Dance Night; and Saturday is ‘80’s-90’s Dance Mix.

How much is too much? Alka-Seltzer, in celebration of its 75th anniversary, will try to set a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Buffet” at the Las Vegas Hilton on Tuesday, March 28 beginning at 11 a.m. Kathy Griffin, actress and comedian, will host the 500-item buffet (located in Hilton Ballroom A). Although Kathy will host the buffet, she will not eat all 500 items. Otherwise, we would have to have another event, “The World’s Largest Kathy.” Admission is $7.50 per person, with all of the proceeds to be donated to America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization.

The Las Vegas Hilton has just opened its 888 Noodle Bar, located in the heart of Benihana Village. The Pan-Asian menu features noodles, congee, and rice dishes prepared in an exhibition kitchen as you watch. Menu items includes appetizers, soups and salads (from $7 to $9) and entrees (from $10 to $28). Signature dishes are made with roast duck, braised Mandarin beef, curry chicken and fresh sea bass. Authentic Asian noodles are comprised of such popular varieties as Singapore, Udon, Szechuan and Chow Mein. 888 Noodle Bar is open nightly from 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Spring and baseballs are in the air. With team’s right in the middle of spring training, the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook has posted the over/under regular season wins for all the teams. Guests can make a wager if their favorite team or teams are going to win more or less than the posted numbers. This is one of the more popular wagers available on baseball. Fans can follow this wager from the first pitch of the season until the final day in October. Leading the pack are (who else but?) the Yankees at 97.5, the defending champs White Sox are 92, the ever popular Red Sox are 91.5, the new look Blue Jays are at 87.5, and the Dodgers are 84. Just like the pitchers, lines may change. Play Ball!

Think of $100,000. Think four-of-a-kind. Just don’t limit it to cards and you have the $100,000 tournament series at the Las Vegas Hilton. Next up: Craps on April 10-12. First-place prize is $50,000. Entry fee is $499. For more information, call 800-457-3307. Others in the series: Pai Gow Poker, July 5-7; Three Card Poker, August 8-10.

From “EYE ON VEGAS”

Nominations for the restaurant industry’s version of the Oscars were announced late last week and it served notice to further cement Las Vegas as a culinary capitol to be reckoned with. One needn’t look any further than the “Outstanding Restaurateur” award as an indication that Las Vegas is a city that chefs and restaurateurs alike have taken a kin to. The honored five operators nominated for the award include Wolfgang Puck(Spago and Chinois-Forum Shops, Lupo-Mandalay Bay, Postrio-Venetian and Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill-MGM Grand), former LVFBM cover chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Prime-Bellagio), Richard Melman(Mon Ami Gabi and Eiffel Tower Restaurant-Paris, Café Ba Ba Reeba-Fashion Show Mall and Joe’s Seafood-Forum Shops) and Chef Daniel Boulud (Daniel Boulud Brasserie-Wynn Las Vegas). That’s 11 restaurants from four of the five nominees!

The Eye on Vegas has learned that rocker and Motley Crue front-man Vince Neil has signed on to produce a stage show for the up-coming Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino appropriately titled Girls, Girls, Girls. The show will be choreographed by two seasoned professionals in Chris Judd and Eddie Garcia. Judd, who is most famously known for his marriage to actress Jennifer Lopez, along with Garcia, are the pair who revamped the Luxor’s Fantasy show and have years of experience that goes back to their days on the Michael Jackson tour bus.

Can we officially crownTryst as one of the kings of Vegas nightlife? If for some reason you’re still balking just wait until the April 7th weekend when Maxim Magazine returns to Las Vegas for their 100th Issue Birthday Weekend. Although the weekend is packed full of fun events like the Rock n’ Roll Poker Tournament hosted by Dave Navarro and poker pro’s Johnny Chan and Chris Moneymaker and the Caddies and Cocktails Golf Tournament it will be the blow-out bash at Tryst Nightclub on Saturday night that will take the cake as the weekend’s pinnacle. The nation will finally learn what the locals already know, that Tryst is one of the ‘it’ places to party in the country, as well as, quite simply, jaw-dropping beautiful. It also might be a somewhat telling indicator as last year’s Maxim Top 100 event was held at the Hard Rock Hotel’s Body English.

Last week we wrote about rumors that surfaced regarding an up-coming sale for the Sahara Hotel & Casino. Although on-site personnel hadn’t heard anything our sources persist that the property currently has three bids on the table and is looking into each of them.

Lenny’s Las Vegas.

Changing of the Guard.
Hotels shuffling entertainment lineups.

Don’t know why some of the hotels do what they do when it comes to entertainment, but I guess they must have their reasons. Gordie Brown, who packed them in at the Golden Nugget, is history. Hopefully he’ll reappear soon at another property. Ditto for The Scintas at Rio. This talented family, who also filled the seats and even had the theater named after them, will end their five-year run on May 3 and head for the Sahara.

And last, but certainly not least, is the funniest comic in town, Rita Rudner, who ends her five-year run at New York-New York June 10, to make room for a nightclub. Rudner has said she will return this fall, but did not say at what hotel. Probably because the hotel now has someone performing who it plans on getting rid of to make way for Rudner.

In an interview, Rudner said, “They just feel they want a nightclub…and sometimes a move is good for everybody. We bought a beach house in Laguna, and it will be my first summer off in six years and then we’ll be going back to work.”

As an example of how successful her show was, her run at the resort sold more than 600,000 tickets and grossed more than $35 million. A nightclub? Are they nuts?

On the other hand, Australia’s Thunder From Down Under at the Excalibur has been extended through 2012. Good news for the ladies — and maybe some guys as well. The guys in the revue, I’m told, are all “hunks” and continue to get the gals’ heart rates up. Hey, what can I tell you? Sex sells.

Thankfully, we do have some new fun shows in town, albeit not with an individual comedian. I went to see Menopause The Musical at the Hilton last week and I will say it right up front, dollar for dollar, it’s the best show in town. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in a very long time. Neither did the rest of the audience as they gave them a rousing standing O at the end of the show, and it certainly was well-deserved.

For any of you women who have gone, or are going through menopause and your partners who have had to, or are, suffering through it, this is a show you definitely don’t want to miss. It’s all about four women who meet while shopping at Bloomingdale’s and share their menopause woes with each other to the music of many of your favorite songs, but with their own original lyrics. I’ll say no more other than to again say it’s the best ticket in town and for half of what you’ll pay for the BIG shows. I’ll be talking to the cast in the near future and will tell you all about it.

TURNING JAPANESE

If you’re looking for something different, the Riviera has added Matsuri, the number one production in Japan, to its list of entertainment. The show will run thru Apr. 29 and features world-ranked professional athletes and Olympic medalists, combines athletics, extreme sports, dance, and Japanese tradition.

I’m told this musical performance originally started as a hit Japanese television program, Kinniku-banzuke, a sports variety program that highlighted athletic performances set to music. As a stage show renamed Matsuri, it evolved to include a variety of musical stunts, extreme sports, and comedic routines. It is punctuated by Japanese earth and foot drum dances, which create rhythms using the human body, and tapping, clapping, and stomping the stage. Kind of like a Japanese version of Rent. I haven’t seen it, but the word I get from those who have, it’s well worth putting on your must-see list.
