Workers, customers pleased to hear Tropicana will remain open.

Employees and customers alike were pleased to learn that the Tropicana, long the subject of tear-down rumors, will remain open for at least two more years.

“I’m happy they’re keeping it open because we have so many customers who love this place and come steadily,” said a food and beverage employee who was on-site midday Monday and hadn’t heard about Aztar Corp.’s sale of the Tropicana until a reporter informed him of it.

Movie Mustang Eleanor For Sale at The Auto Collections at Imperial Palace.

She’s fast, fun and fabulous.

She’s Eleanor. And she’s for sale.

Eleanor returns to The Auto Collections at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Casino tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15.

The 1967 Mustang GT500 stole the show in “Gone in Sixty Seconds,” the 2000 action hit starring Nicolas Cage.

The popular pony car is actually one of 11 built for the movie. Of those, two were destroyed in the climactic bridge jump and junkyard crusher scenes. Because certain cars were needed to do different maneuvers in the film, no two Eleanors were alike.

All the Eleanors only acted the role of being Shelbys while really they were modified Mustang fastbacks. And, although in “Gone” the car is supposed to be a four-on-the-floor, most of the Eleanors were automatics – because it’s easier to act and do stunts when you don’t have to manually shift gears.

The Mustang muscle magnet will remain on display between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until it’s sold. Eleanor was previously on display in June 2003 and remains one of the all-time most crowd-pleasing attractions in The Auto Collections.

The Auto Collections is the world’s largest classic car lot with $100 million worth of inventory on display and for sale. It includes antique, muscle, famous, infamous and historically significant vehicles. Open daily, 9:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $6.95 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 5-12 and children under 5 are free.

Rod Stewart Ordered to Pay Harrah’s $3,153,483
A federal judge has ordered Rod Stewart to pay a Las Vegas casino more than $3 million for a canceled show in December 2000.

U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks ordered the British rocker’s lawyers to pay an additional $153,483 in contempt-of-court sanctions and legal costs for failing to turn over information to lawyers for Harrah’s Entertainment before trial last year.

Stewart’s lawyer, Louis “Skip” Miller in Los Angeles, declined comment Monday on the sanctions. Miller said Stewart intends to appeal the verdict and jury award.

Hicks’ judicial order, dated Friday, put Stewart on the hook for $3.06 million, including the $2 million advance he was paid by the Rio hotel-casino and more than $1 million in interest, penalties and attorney fees.

Greg Poplewko, the Food and Beverage Manager at Bally’s sent me this interesting tidbit:

You can confirm that we pour Perrier Jouet Champagne at the Sterling Brunch and as you know it flows freely. We are the biggest consumer of it in the country! As one person noted if you are into champagne the cost is worth it for that alone. There are very few places in the country that even offer it by the glass so this is also a chance to try it if you have not. Price is $65.00.

For the 17th month in a row, the casinos in Nevada raked in a record amount of money in January of 2006 with the biggest chunk of change going to the gambling palaces in Las Vegas. Statewide win was an astounding $1.14 billion, up almost 25 percent over January of 2005. Strip casinos earned more than half of that, roughly $627.5 million up nearly 30 percent over the same time last year. Downtown casinos, which have not been participating in the record making of late, also showed gains with over $57 million pumped into the Glitter Gulch slots and tables representing a 15 percent increase.

Chris Daughtry, the bald rocker, is a narrow favorite over Mandisa Hundley in the “American Idol” competition, says John Avello, Wynn Las Vegas race and sports director. Daughtry is listed at 4-1 and Mandisa at 9-2. Odds for the others in the final 12: Ace Young, 5-1; Lisa Jackson, 6-1; Katharine McPhee, 8-1; Paris Bennett, 10-1; Elliott Yamin, 12-1; Kellie Pickler, 15-1; Taylor Hicks, 25-1; Bucky Covington, 35-1; Melissa McGhee, 40-1 and Kevin Covais, 100-1. Avello puts the odds up for entertainment purposes only, not wagering.

Two comedic heavyweights will be going tete-to-tete at the Flamingo Las Vegas for the month of April when David Brenner has announced he will join George Wallace on stage during Wallace’s regular 10P show. “People will not know what to expect, but they better get there on time because they won’t know if I’m coming out first, if David’s coming out first, or if a surprise guest is coming out before either of us. You just never know with my show,” said George Wallace. Tickets for the Wallace/Brenner special performances are $75 and can be purchased at the Flamingo box office.

The MGM Grand has issued a limited edition $5 poker chip to honor the first anniversary of the hotel’s high-end Skylofts. The chip features the Skylofts logo on one side and the famous MGM Grand lion on the other.

Speaking of limited edition chips, Jack Daniels hosted a special NASCAR pre-party last Thursday at the Palmswhere they gave attendees special $7 casino chips. The chips are worth $7 because of the ‘Old No. 7 brand’ that adorns each bottle of Jack.

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at the Venetian is going forward with plans to display a figure of late rap star Tupac Shakur in its “On Stage” attraction beginning April 5. Shakur’s flavor of rap is unwelcome today by Las Vegas law enforcement (and by some members of the state Board of Regents), but Madame Tussauds is keeping with its practice of depicting the most compelling historic figures, regardless of controversy.

Alka-Seltzer will make an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Buffet” in celebration of its 75th anniversary. The 500-item buffet, located at the Las Vegas Hilton, will be hosted by actress and comedian Kathy Griffin. The buffet will be open to the public at 11a with a cost of $7.50 per person on March 28, 2006. All of the proceeds to be donated to America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization.

Look for Playboy Playmates, Lauren Anderson and Barbara Moore to be included in the upcoming show at the Stardust, Headlights & Tailpipes.
The show opens on April 4.

The Palms casino has opened the second story of The Mint Lounge. This is the first unique high roller two story lounge adjacent to the casino games. The Mint lounge is the new gathering place for real gamblers and gorgeous ladies.

Barry Manilow, hot off his new The Greatest Songs of the Fifties “Billboard” chart success, is not sitting idle. In fact, he’s joining “American Idol” on Fox on Tuesday’s show to introduce some of these great songs and work with the talented performers on the show. Then on Wednesday, Barry will be singing live on the show. Rumor has it that the show kids will rehearse with Barry on the stage of the Hilton Theater this weekend.

“Lunchtime with Ira, Live from the Las Vegas Hilton,” which airs live on KDWN AM 720 TALK RADIO (and live and archived on www.lvhilton.com.) as well as The CRN Radio Networks, has now added television to its distribution. At the Las Vegas Hilton, the show is broadcast 24/7 to all of the classic property’s 3000 rooms and suites.

March is the time for hoops and the crowning of another college basketball champion. All the hoopla starts Thursday, March 16 as 64 teams representing all regions of the country start competing for the crown of college basketball. The Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook is ready for one of the biggest sporting events of the year, offering an expanded wagering menu for all the Madness. The SuperBook has odds to win the tournament, regional odds, a huge selection of propositions, and first and second half wagering on all the games. And don’t forget the 11 giant screens.

That fantastic band that plays and sings songs of the 50’s & 60’s called Doo-Wopp.com has been cancelled by the Fiesta. Every Thursday night for several years, a huge crowd would be at the Fiesta Rancho for their wonderful show. I guess they were cancelled because it was a FREE show and the Fiesta only got money for the drinks. Or they just wanted to get rid of us older folks who are in their 50’s and 60’s.

At least Doo-Wopp.com can still be seen and heard (for free) at the Suncoast every Tuesday evening.

My group of friends like to gamble, do some dancing, and have fun so we will take our business now to the Suncoast.

Hold’em A-Z: K is for Kicker by Bill Burton

A kicker is a card in an unpaired card in your hand that will determine the winner in the event of a tie. Example: If the winning hand was a pair of Aces and you held A-K and your opponent held A-J, your King would beat his Jack. In this example the King and Jack are the kickers. A sixth card is never used to break a tie.

There are many times when the winning pot is determined by a kicker. Often times players don’t think about it until they lose one of these hands. You must consider your kicker when choosing your starting hands.

Oceans 13
Brad Pitt and George Clooney are picking apart casino blueprints once again, but casino bankers needn’t start worrying, at least not yet. The Hollywood stars were spotted in Berlin, Germany this week meeting with German architects Wolfram Putz, Thomas Willemeit and Lars Krueckerberg from the Graft architecture firm. It was originally believed that the designers were building a house for Pitt and girlfriend Angelina Jolie, however, when Clooney showed up the German press started to put the focus on the up-coming Las Ramblas property. It has long been rumored that Pitt, a novice architect and close friend to Clooney, would have some input on the design of the property and those rumors would now appear to be confirmed.

Rockin’ Rumors
The Las Vegas rumor mill never does seem to stop churning does it? We received a juicy piece of gossip last week that is too good to keep to ourselves. Jann Wenner, the owner of Rolling Stone Magazine, has been connected with numerous Vegas properties over the past year including two Harmon Corridor tenants, the Hard Rock Hotel and Alexis Park. Reportedly, Wenner is interested in using the magazine’s licensed name and affix it to a rock n’ roll-themed hotel. Our source dropped a tidbit about Wenner actually looking on the strip and suggested we aim our focus on the Sahara Hotel. The property has been held in trust since the death of Bill Bennett in 1995. A spokesperson for the Sahara noted, “We haven’t heard anything about it, it’s probably just rumors.” Fair enough, but FAR stranger things have happened.

Top Chef Warms Up
Bravo’s new reality television show Top Chef got off to a hot start this week with some serious Vegas connections. The 10-episode show features twelve aspiring chefs battling for the bragging rights of Top Chef and the $100,000 in seed money to further their culinary career. Celebrity Chef Tom Colicchio, the man behind the MGM’s craftsteak, serves as judge and show chef, but he isn’t the only big name involved with the show. The first episode also featured renowned French Chef Hubert Keller, of Fleur de Lys (Mandalay Bay), serving as guest judge and host for the first competition, which was held in the kitchen of his San Francisco Fleur outpost. Additionally, two of the competitors have strong Vegas ties; Tiffani Faison is currently serving as a food server at Tao and had served as chef du partie under Daniel Boulud at Wynn Las Vegas and Stephen Asprinio who until recently served as sommelier at one ofMichael Mina’s MGM restaurants, Nobhill. In case you missed it, the first person ejected from the show was Kenneth Lee, an outspoken Irishman who had the audacity to argue with Chef Keller in his own kitchen. You can catch new episodes of Top Chef every Wednesday at 9P.

You have to check out the new menu at the Rainbow Bar & Grill. The slimmed, dressed down menu features lowered prices and offers fantastic fare that might be more suiting of the rocked out venue. The menu comes from Chef Chris Eissler who has traveled the world as the personal chef to media magnate Ted Turner. If you’re lucky you might get to hear Eissler tell a tall tale or two while you dine on his mouth-watering food.

Japan’s #1 Show Is Fun For Whole Family!

“Matsuri,” the number one production show in Japan, is now performing a limited engagement in the Splash Theatre at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, through thru Saturday,Apr. 29. The show, which features world-ranked professional athletes and Olympic medalists, combines athletics, extreme sports, dance, and Japanese tradition.

The musical performance originally started as a hit Japanese television program, “Kinniku-banzuke,” created by famed Japanese producer Ushio Higuchi. Together with world-renowned musical director Ryoji Nakamura, the creators developed a musical stage production that now performs 142 sold-out performances in Japan every year.

“Kinniku-banzuke,” which means muscle ranking, was a sports variety program that highlighted athletic performances set to music. As a stage show renamed “Matsuri,” it evolved to include a variety of musical stunts, extreme sports, and comedic routines. It is punctuated by Japanese earth and foot drum dances, which create heart-pounding rhythms using the human body and tapping, clapping, and stomping the stage.

“The show is an energetic, interactive, and memorable musical performance that celebrates of the human mind, body, and spirit,” says Higuchi. “These athletes and performers accomplish things on stage that most of us can only dream of … but what amazes me is that they can perform these feats because they dared to dream they could and then make it their reality.”

Higuchi attributes the success of the show to its ability to continually evolve and integrate the newest world-class athletes from Japan into the production. Highlighted segments include world-ranked mountain bikers and freestyle trampolines.

Featured athletes include world champion German wheel gymnast Yasuaki Yoshikawa and 2004 Trampoline World Cup winner Daisuke Nakata. Yoshikawa won first in German wheel vault and second all around in 2003. Nakata and his partner were the first Japanese gymnasts to ever win at the Trampoline World Cup.

“Each athlete and performer brings something new, unique and exciting to the production,” said Nakamura. “Sometimes it is a challenge to see how a particular human feat might fit into the musical, but then it hits you and the whole show takes on a new dimension.”

Show times are 4 p.m. Saturday – Thursday; 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. on Fridays. Dark Tuesdays. Tickets are $59.95 plus tax and fee-general admission, $69.95 plus tax and fee- VIP seating, $39.95 plus tax and fee for children under 12. George Wallace is known as the “Best 10 p.m. Show” when he performs at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. A long-time friendship and mutual respect for each other as comedians, led to this special engagement where Brenner will join Wallace for the month of April.

Wallace has been featured in his own HBO One Night Stand and has appeared in several motion pictures including Three Strikes, Little Nicky and The Wash. He was most recently seen co-starring opposite Tom Hanks and Marlon Wayans in the Coen Brothers’ hit film Ladykillers. GUIDE TO CASINO COMPS
By Henry Tamburin

What is a Comp?

A “comp” is an abbreviation for complimentary. They are the free goods and services provided by the casino to reward players for their play. Comps can range on the low end to free drinks and free valet parking all the way up to free room, food, beverage and transportation.

What are the Requirements to Get a Comp?

The only requirement is that you gamble. Most casinos require that you bet at a certain level and play for a specific period of time in order to qualify for a comp. The more you bet and the longer you play the higher the level of comp you can expect.

I Thought Comps Were Only For High-Rollers?

That’s one of the misconceptions about comps. You don’t need to be a high roller to get a comp. Yes, we all know the stories about high rollers that get shuttled to and from Las Vegas on a private jet, picked up in a chauffeured stretched limo, given a luxury suite twice the size of your home, and dine in ultra-swank gourmet restaurants “on the house”. But casinos also offer valuable comps to low rollers that include free meals, free or discounted rooms, and free show tickets.

Why do Casinos Give Player’s Comps?

Casinos need steady customers and they know there is a lot of competition for players. Therefore they offer comps to loyal players as a reward for their business. Comps also have a way of making players rationalize their losses so they return again to the same property. Comps also stimulate players into betting at higher levels and longer because most players mistakenly believe that when they get a comp they are getting something for nothing.

Do I Have To Lose To Get a Comp?

This is another misconception. Comps are not based on how much you lose (or win) but on the total amount of money you’ve wagered (known as the amount of “action” you give the casino). All the casinos want is a shot at your money at their tables and machines.

How Do I Get a Comp if I Play the Machines?

You need to sign up for a Player’s Card and keep it inserted into the machine’s card reader while you play. The casino’s computer will keep track of how much money you play through the machine. Always make sure your card is registering properly so you get credit for your play. Also check at the Player’s Club if you are entitled to any freebies just for joining (casinos often have promotions to entice players to sign up).

How Do I Know How Long to Play the Slots to Get a Comp?

Casinos use to be secretive about how they rewarded comps. But nowadays the majority of casinos have brochures that tell their players how many dollars they must play to earn a point and how many points are required to get a specific comp. Nowadays, you can also find this information on most casino web sites (you can also sign up for a player’s card and keep track of your points on some casino web sites).

How Do I Get a Comp if I Play the Tables?

You must ask to be ‘rated’ when you play in the pits in order to be eligible for a comp. Getting rated means the pit boss or floor supervisor will keep track of the hours you play and your average bet size. In some casinos you can use your Player’s Card to get rated while others issue a different rating card for table players. If unsure just inquire at the Players Club or ask a casino host. When you sit down to play just slide the card to the dealer with your buy-in and the dealer will hand it to the floor supervisor, who will begin the rating process (in some casinos the dealer has a device on the table that she uses to swipe your card to initiate the rating process).

If I’m a Table Player, How Much Do I Need to Bet and For How Long to Get a Comp?

Each casino has a different policy when it comes to giving comps for table players. Some casinos that cater to high end players require a minimum of $25 bets to even be considered for comps while other casinos will gladly rate nickel players. My advice is to first call the casino’s marketing department and speak to a casino host about table game playing requirements for rating and comps. This way you’ll know the casino’s requirements and there won’t be any surprises.

Are Their Any Downsides to Comps?

Most players are envious of other players who get “comped”. These players play right into the casino’s hands because by betting more and longer then they intended in the pursuit of a comp, most players with end up losing more then the comp was worth. Never play longer or bet more for the sake of a comp. Just learn how to use the system to get your fair share of comps for your normal play.

“Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” by Jerry Fink

The Broadway musical “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” is coming to the Plaza for an open-ended engagement.

Entertainment Coordinator Andrea A. Woods says the revue, based upon the music of Thomas “Fats” Waller from the 1920s through the 1940s, debuts April 26.

Waller - jazz pianist, organist, composer - rose to fame during the height of ragtime and jazz popularity.

The production opened on Broadway in 1978 and ran for 1,604 performances.

Among Waller’s many numbers in the production are the title hit (written in 1929), “Ain’t Misbehavin,’ ” “The Joint is Jumpin’,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie.”

The local cast includes A.J. Phillinganes, Nona Johnson, Cassandra Williams, Lyrehc (pronounced lyric) Jordan and Neil Taffe (background singer for Gladys Knight).

Jarrett-Martini is the producer of the show.

The 90-minute show will be in the Plaza Showroom at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

Tickets for the show are $19.95. For the show and dinner the price is $49.95.

Since the holiday is all about enjoying a few of your favorite adult beverages, here’s a rundown of some choice drinking tunes.

Pass the bottle, and let’s go.

SHOW REVIEW: Earl Turner

‘Look What Katrina Blew In’: Displaced from New Orleans, Earl Turner has landed on his feet.
By Mike Weatherford.

Make room, folks. Las Vegas has even more ticketed shows than it did when Earl Turner left town four years ago, but he’s elbowed his way back in at the point where he left off.

An open-lounge favorite throughout the ’90s, Turner finally made the transition into a ticketed act at the Rio in 2001. Harrah’s Entertainment then transferred him to Laughlin and New Orleans.

Hurricane Katrina ended his gig in a showroom bearing his name at Harrah’s New Orleans — which reopened last month, but isn’t ready for a tourist-oriented show — and Turner moved his family back to Las Vegas. Early this month, he launched a new residency at Palace Station’s cozy SoundTrax.

THE SOPRANOS SPOOF COMES TO VEGAS

The most talked about TV show is coming to The Las Vegas Strip this weekend to audition for 20 positions. The two-and-a-half-hour interactive dinner show will be the best of its kind in the world. Where else would be more perfect than Las Vegas? The mobsters of the ‘60s and ‘70s would be spinning in their graves if the knew a comedy-musical would be spoofing them in their old stomping ground.

The show should open at the Krave Nightclub on April 6th.
