The latest on Harrah’s:

It is not written in stone but a reliable source at Harrah’s has said that not only will the Imperial Palace be taken down but also Harrah’s Las Vegas itself along with O’Shea’s, Barbary Coast, Bourbon Street, and most likely the Battista’s restaurant plaza. Harrh’s is looking to bulid a mega-structure that will rival MGM/Mirages’ Project City Center.

The Imperial Palace is still booking through 2006 so nothing will be happening until at least 2007.

The World Poker Tour is returning to the Bellagio from December 12th-16th.

Look for the show OVATION to be opening at the Plaza around Christmas time.

The Luxor is saying that Frankie Valli’s shows sudden closing was simply a “business decision.” Insiders say Valli is too demanding and that’s why he was let go.

“Love Is A Pain” opens at the Riviera on December 26th.

Lady Luck is offering an attractive Las Vegas Pin when you join their Mad Money Player’s Club.

People have been asking for locations of the half-priced ticket outlets. Here are the locations for TIX4TONIGHT

The Elvis-A-Rama Museum has been renamed the Elvis-A-Rama Experience. There is a free shuttle from the Strip. Just call 702-309-7200.

You can check out the new Hooters Las Vegas at www.hooterscasinohotel.com

Casino MonteLago now has a daily slot tournament with $1000 in prizes.

There are a lot of table game versions of Texas Hold Em in just about every Las Vegas Casino. The newest one is called, “The World Poker Tour All-In Hold’em.”

You can get a $10.00 off coupon to the Rio’s Village Seafood Buffet and a 2 for 1 coupon to Erocktica at the Rio’s security podium.

Change in Bus Fares
A fare restructuring on Las Vegas’ public CAT buses will be implemented tomorrow, Thursday December 1. Free transfers from one bus to another will be eliminated. In their place, the price of a special all-day pass is being reduced from $5 to $2.50. The special pass allows unlimited rides on all non-Strip routes and 50-cent rides on Strip routes. The $5 regular all-day pass allows unlimited rides on all CAT routes, including the Strip, for a 24-hour period. The $1.25 per ride on residential routes and $2 on Strip routes remain unchanged, but the cost of a 30-day pass will be raised $10 to $40 for adults and $5 to $20 for kids and seniors.

Show Review: Avenue Q By Rick Garman

I’ve struggled with a succinct way of summing up Avenue Q, the Tony-Award winning musical now playing at Wynn Las Vegas and what I’ve arrived at is this: It’s Rent meets Melrose Place meets Sesame Street. If that doesn’t intrigue you I’m not sure we have anything left to talk about. The storyline is fairly simple. Princeton is a recent college graduate who moves into a rundown apartment on Avenue Q in New York City and starts to take the first steps toward responsibility and maturity as he gets involved in the lives and loves of his neighbors including Kate, a kindergarten teaching assistant and potential love interest; Brian, an out of work comedian and his Asian fiancé Christmas Eve; Rod, a Republican investment banker who is harboring a secret crush on his slacker roommate Nicky; Trekkie, the porn-obsessed malcontent with a heart of gold; and their landlord Gary Coleman. Yes, that Gary Coleman, but not played by the diminutive ‘70s sitcom star.

Sounds offbeat, right? Well, throw in the fact that Princeton, Kate, Rod, Nicky, and Trekkie are all Sesame Street style puppets interacting with live human beings Brian, Christmas, and Gary Coleman and it really bumps things up a notch.

Avenue Q is a bright, fizzy musical concoction that somehow manages to be more emotionally involving than most shows featuring real, live people. As Princeton and Kate’s on again-off again relationship is interrupted by Princeton’s dalliance with sultry singing siren Lucy (also a puppet), you actually feel Kate’s heartbreak. Rod’s affection for roommate Nicky and the attendant sexual identity issues that come with it are more fully fleshed out and interesting than just about any similar storyline short of “Brokeback Mountain.” And as all of the characters struggle to figure out who they are and where they fit in this kooky world of ours will leave you rooting for a happy ending. And these are puppets!!

The whole package is a winner. Performances from the cast, many of whom came from the original Tony-Award winning New York version, are uniformly stellar with standout awards going to John Tartaglia (pulling double duty as Princeton and Rod) and Tonya Dixon as Gary Coleman (complete with the trademark smiling pose and laugh).

Laugh-out loud songs like “It Sucks to Be Me,” a cast-wide competition of whose life is worse, Rod’s desperate attempt to cover his secret with “My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada,” and Trekkie and Kate’s duet about the true role of the world wide web in our society entitled “The Internet Is For Porn” are a few examples of the delirious sing-a-long style numbers that could’ve been written for Sesame Street if it weren’t for the actual lyrics.

But this is no Sesame Street to be sure. First, the puppets don’t pop up from behind brick walls or desks, but instead are on the arms of their human masters who give them voice and motion. At first it’s a bit hard to decide who to watch, the expressive and animated fuzzy characters or their equally expressive and animated human counterparts, but after awhile you pretty much forget the people are there and just go with it.

Second, the themes explored and the way they explore them are not something you’d find on the PBS kiddie show. Sure, Sesame Street has touched on the theme of racism, but in Avenue Q you have puppets and people singing “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist.” Being true to yourself is something Bert and Ernie might talk about but probably not with the Avenue Q songs like “If You Were Gay” and “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today.” And certainly love and affection are a common factor for folks like Elmo but in Avenue Q you have two naked puppets having sex. Seriously.

Which should bring you to the conclusion, rapidly, that this show is not for kids. While sophisticated teenagers will probably love and appreciate it, Avenue Q is filled with adult humor, language, and situations that will leave youngsters unable to look at Big Bird quite the same way again. For that reason, children under 12 are not permitted.

Likewise, people with easily offended sensibilities or those who don’t think the concept of a closeted Republican puppet could possibly be funny may want to consider alternate forms of entertainment.

Everyone else should run, not walk, to this fantastic slice of American theater. You’ll leave feeling more than a little sore from laughing so hard and perhaps, a little bit uplifted as well. Hard to believe you can get some sort of emotional edification from puppets, but there’s probably a reason that Sesame Street and The Muppets are still so popular.

INTERNATIONAL SENSATION PERFORMS VALENTINE’S WEEKEND

Michael Bublé makes his first ever Las Vegas appearance by performing Valentine’s weekend (February 10-12 and 14) 2006 at the Las Vegas Hilton.

The international sensation’s only Vegas stop on his worldwide tour will be at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater.

Since the release of his groundbreaking 2003 debut album, this gifted entertainer has literally been around the world an astonishing eight times, playing for sell-out audiences and, in the process, connecting with music lovers of every description.

“I’ve seen how music can transcend border and boundaries, cultures and creeds,” Bublé says. “It’s been an education but, more importantly, it’s been an inspiration.”

Bublé’s Hilton Valentine’s weekend engagement announcement marks a busy month: his new DVD, “Caught In The Act,” is in stores, Tuesday, November 22, and his PBS special airs on December 3.

Bublé’s first “Great Performances” PBS special of his August live performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles will be seen and heard in this CD+DVD package. Earlier this year, Bublé scored his biggest triumph to date with the platinum and Top 10 Pop album, “It’s Time.” Its #1 Adult Contemporary hit, “Home,” spent 26 weeks at #1 on the Contemporary Jazz chart. Now Bublé takes yet another giant step in his meteoric career.

Michael Bublé performs Valentine’s weekend, February 10-12 and 14 at 9 p.m. in the Hilton Theater. Tickets are $75 and $95 (plus tax and service charge) and can be purchased at the Las Vegas Hilton box office or by visiting www.lvhilton.com or calling 702-732-5755 or 1-800-222-5361. Tickets go on sale November 26 at 10 a.m.

Monorail shut six hours after part falls off

Clark County officials described an incident Sunday in which a wheel skirt fell off a Las Vegas Monorail train as “pretty minor,” though it delayed the start of the day’s operations by almost six hours.

No one was injured in the 6:30 a.m. incident, in which a skirt fell off one train, then was run over by another, during a pre-opening test run near the Sahara Avenue station, county officials said Wednesday.

There were no passengers aboard any trains at the time of the incident.

X Scream reopening on hold until safety inspection ends.
Power outage left six tourists stranded for about 90 minutes.

There will be no X Scream activity at the Stratosphere until safety inspectors examine the circumstances that left six tourists stranded on the world’s third highest thrill ride during a power outage Tuesday night.

Las Vegas inspectors shut the ride down early Wednesday morning, said Paul Wilkins, Las Vegas director of building and safety.

Recreation Engineering Inc., which specializes in amusement ride safety issues, has been asked to conduct the investigation, which began late Wednesday afternoon.

“Right now, we are conducting a thorough and complete investigation,” Stratosphere spokesman Mike Gilmartin said. “We won’t have any comment until it’s complete.”

The Most Extravagant and Expensive Burger Experience Ever Conceived

In the land of $100 margaritas and $1,000 shots of whiskey, it should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is now home to an extravagant burger-eating experience to rival all others. Renowned Chef Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys at Mandalay Bay presents FleurBurger 5000, a gastronomic jackpot. The fois gras and black truffle-topped Kobe burger is served on a brioche truffle bun and garnished with Chef Keller’s special sauce consisting of, you guessed it, more truffles. To accompany this decadent burger, guests enjoy a bottle of Chateau Petrus 1990 poured in Ichendorf Brunello stemware, exclusively imported from Italy. After the meal, the team at Fleur de Lys ship the glasses to the guest’s home at no additional charge. This level of decadence can be savored for $5,000.

Las Vegas Resident Becomes First to Win Grand Jackpot on Aristocrat’s New Zorro Hyperlink Progressive Games.

Ardent Zorro fan and Las Vegas resident David Ventura became the first player to win the $50,000 top award on Aristocrat’s new Zorro-themed local-area progressive games. He won late Tuesday night at Santa Fe Station Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

“I’m a great Zorro fan and was there for the grand opening when the new Zorro movie opened up,” Ventura said. “I knew I had to try the new Zorro machines.”

The 53-year respiratory therapist said he had invested about $50 when he hit the Grand Jackpot, which is a static $50,000 award that can be won on any Zorro game.

“I said ‘yes, it’s about time’,” Ventura said, adding that he and his wife Nancy will use the winnings for an upcoming cruise and trip to Mexico.

Aristocrat’s Zorro linked progressive combines the excitement of a four-level progressive jackpot with six bonus events and four bonus features. This rich feature set is augmented with two unique, Zorro-themed MKVI(TM) 20-line penny slots, amazing graphics, and hi-fi sounds.

The four-level, second-screen progressive features three linked progressive jackpots and a fourth top jackpot with a static $50,000 award that can be won on any game. The jackpots are triggered randomly and the jackpot level won is based on the player’s accumulated jackpot score. Once a player enters into the second-screen feature they are guaranteed to win one of the four jackpots, providing frequent wins and added excitement to their game play.

An extra 10-credit ante bet adds even more anticipation, giving the player the chance to win one of the Zorro random bonus features. Players know they have won the Zorro bonus when Z-O-R-R-O is spelled across the reels. The Zorro bonus feature offers free credits, free games, player’s choice options, match-a-coin, and multipliers.

Monorail ridership remains stagnant.

The number of people riding the Las Vegas Monorail remained virtually flat last month, and this month doesn’t figure to be any better, monorail officials said Thursday.

But monorail officials said they think the sluggish turnstile count of 28,820 daily riders in October was more a sign of a seasonal tourist slowdown than a lack of interest in the $650 million rapid-transit line.

“Now that the monorail has successfully operated for more than 10 consecutive months without incident, we’re stepping up our marketing efforts with the convention and travel industry, although we expect next month’s numbers to be relatively the same as October,” Curtis Myles, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Monorail Co., said in a prepared statement.

SHOW REVIEW: Two-Sided Dice.
Comedian blurs line between doting father, stage persona.
By Mike Weatherford

You have to see him to believe it, but Andrew “Dice” Clay argues a halfway good case for why we need him today.

You remember the chain-smoking, trash-talking Brooklyn mook with the slicked-back hair and leather jacket? He may be anachronistic, but sometimes it takes an outsider to call us out.

You just took it too far. Everything,” he says. “Look what you’ve done to yourselves over a phone… You’re 55. Why do you have to hear half a Led Zeppelin tune (as a ringtone) before you pick up the phone?”

But if you catch the end of Clay’s long stretch at the Luxor this weekend, you will be reminded “The Diceman” is the creation of another person born Andrew Silverstein. He’s the doting father of two sons — he proves this by trotting them out and showing them to you — who is said to be nothing like the character he inhabits onstage.

Howard taking his versatile show to Stardust
By Jerry Fink

Watching Robbie Howard perform you wouldn’t know that his last performance at the Westward Ho will be Tuesday.

Of course he won’t be without an audience long — he debuts Nov. 21 at the Stardust’s Starlight Lounge, where he will perform two shows daily beginning at 1 p.m.

Howard never seems to let things bother him.

He exudes enthusiasm as he works his fans, wringing out the laughter and applause that have been driving him since he began in show business more than 25 years ago in Anaheim, Calif.

The show opens with a lively “Jump, Jive and Wail” and rarely slows down after that.

It’s a bargain, especially for the price of admission — a $6.95 drink minimum.

Slot Reviews by Gayle Mitchell

Reviews are listed by Slot Name, Manufacturer, average hit frequency and payout range offered, (low to high) if information is available.

1) Gilligan’s Island: IGT. 91-93%. 2 spins.
“Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale”…about a bunch of castaways stranded in a slot that pays an instant jackpot of $20,000 for Gilligan’s Island logos.
All your shipwrecked buddies are here: Gilligan, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, Skipper, Ginger, Mary Ann and the Professor.

The main Shipwreck Bonus is activated when three Shipwreck Shorts appear on the middle reel. Clips from the famous TV series are shown while you make your selection for a credit bonus and perhaps select a Bonus Pick for added credits.
Secondly is the Castaway Cash for three bonus symbols showing up on the first three reels.

Pick one of the castaways to start up the Professor’s Contraption and between multipliers and free spins, your total reward is revealed when the contraption stops.
I have a feeling this crew won’t be saved as long as this slot is paying it’s way.

2)Animal House: IGT. 88-90%, 2 spins.

This Comedy Classic is set up as a multi-site progressive with a top box replica of the Delta House fraternity house enclosed by six spinning reels with room for frantic food fights and toga parties.

Scatter pays are Greek letters with bonus returns in the range of 2X-200X the line bet.

The bonus round occurs when three Delta House symbols appear activating the top box spin again and again to reveal five items from this movie classic.

You choose a cheerleader symbol on the screen for a multiplier value. Add in the reel credits and watch those credits mount.

The ’serious money’ for this fun slot is an Instant-Win of at least $250,000 for five Animal House symbols. Now, that will buy a lot of togas.

3) Newlywed Game: IGT 88-93%, 2 spins.

This slot is worth the play just to hear what the new mates have to say.

The theme is the classic TV game show completed by the familiar music, funny lines and voice of host Jim Lange.

Three or more wedding gift scatter pays will land you at the Wedding Gift Bonus. Select one for bonus bucks.

Secondly, the Newlywed Game Bonus main event occurs with the sighting of 3 or more Jim Lange symbols at which time a screen opens to the set showing four couples ready to play.

Pick your favorite couple to reveal a multiplier and then three questions are asked for which there are two answers, three answers and four answers accordingly.

Correct answers, revealed by the wife, increase your bonus credits while you are treated to the comic exchange between the couple.

All this amusing chitchat and slot play turns into serious money with a MegaJackpot Instant Win starting at $500,000. Ain’t love Grand!

There is always a welcome mat out to new subscribers.

Feature Article: Slots 2006 — Part 1. by Gayle Mitchell

Variety, entertainment value, innovative sound technology and downloading your favorite game are some of the concepts presented in the new line-up of slots.
Penny slots, similar to last year, continue to lead the parade of the new slot selections.

This 4 Part Series covers 8 slot manufacturers, their individual creations and/or slot series.

Additionally, there is great news for slot players in that the majority of these newer versions will be available in casinos within months.

One of the most exciting innovations, in my opinion, is downloadable technology.
This concept involves a central server that permits a casino to download various slot machine games from an equipment provider and reconfigure game content quickly.
The current download offerings of individual slot makers are reported in this series.
It does wear my patience, however, as it is not expected to arrive before 2007.

Part 1 presents the slot manufacturers IGT and partner A.C. Coin.

IGT:
International Gaming Technology celebrates it 25th Anniversary in 2006.
Almost 400 gaming machines were presented with a dazzling array of configurations to include 5-reel slots and video slots with up to 100 paylines.

Let’s begin with Penny series titled Perfect for Pennies:
Fort Knox, Party Time!, Great White, King Cheetah, Persian Princess, Beachcomber, Great Plains, South Pacific, Double Bunger and Heart of Africa.
IGT video slots will showcase a number of new titles: Jewel of Arabia, Lucky Lion Fish, Festival Fantastico, Henry the 8th, Sneeking Tiki, Brew Ha Ha and Wild Goose Chase.

IGT’s S2000 spinning reel slots will, as always, be well represented by new themes on 5-reel slots including Five Times Pay and Triple Strike.

On to multi-line, multi-coin, 3- and 4-reel games where there will be (Double 4 Times Pay, Triple Red Hot 7s and Triple Double Butterfly 7s); and on the new Double Reels slots (Double Diamond Extra, Reel Charms, Super Wild Cherry and Triple Stars Red, White & Blue).

The MultiWay product, which allows players to buy reel positions rather than wagering on standard line patterns,
will include three “treasured” themes: Aztec Temple, Pharaoh’s Gold and Troy.
Several new titles have been added under the Reel Touch banner: It’s All Greek to Me, Bobble Times, Cash Cove and El Toro.

IGT’s Multi Level Progressive products will include the three existing themes — Fort Knox, Party Time! and Wheelionaire and two distinct new ones: Soul Train and Jackpot Hunter.

Jackpot Hunter is a 25-line game featuring a free spin bonus to determine the level of progressive won and Soul Train boasts nine levels of progressive jackpots. 3D Videos will be shown with host Don Cornelius to give this slot
some ’soul’.

The Wheelionaire series of progressives features a common bonus round leading
to one of four jackpot levels.

The next game in this series will be The Apprentice with the Donald.

The Boardroom Bonus prompts the player to select one of the contestants from the first season of the Apprentice to be fired as Donald Trump looks down from a top box second video screen. Bonus amounts climb until the player is fired thus ending the round.

Mystery Mega Progressives series. A collection of games offering a central wheel-spinning bonus round allows the player a chance to win one of five progressive jackpot levels, the top resetting at a ‘life-changing’ million dollars.

Super Spin, a new Megabucks variation featuring actress Morgan Fairchild, World Poker Tour, Back to the Future, Elvis Multi Strike, and Paul Rodriguez.

The standout here is the World Poker Tour slot featuring the sounds and symbols of a poker tournament in a 20 line, 200-coin game. Video clips with familiar poker players and hosts will be sure to entertain. For an extra bet, the player receives a seven-card stud hand to qualify for the All In free spin bonus.

Further on progressives, look for I Dream of Jeannie-Your Wish, a penny progressive with a spinning wheel bonus, Win a Latta featuring Alf, the alien from the TV show and Stinking Rich, a penny progressive with 100 paylines.

The MegaJackpots products will include two new versions of the Star Wars video slot, Dark Side with the Empire in Pursuit bonus focusing on Darth Vader and his challenge to find the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s ship. Also, The Empire Strikes Back.

The innovative Wheel of Fortune Special Edition Super Spin is a multi-player slot version arranged like the game show.

Nine individual stations are available featuring popular hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White.

Several ‘contestants’ at the game’s stations are signaled about an upcoming bonus round with a lit arrow. At this time, the big wheel in the center of the nine stations spins for all qualified contestants to respond within a 10-second countdown from the time that a player hits the Spin button.

Everyone including spectators and certainly players will be jumping up and down for this Special Edition as the wheel goes round and round and where it stops is a winner.

IGT’s Class II and Central Determination products will include 3/5/10 Multi-Hand Poker, Sea-Monkeys, Denver Duck and 5-reel Wheel of Fortune; and Instant Bingo themes like ALIEN and Snow Globes.

Additional offerings are Elvis Multi Strike where you choose favorite Elvis songs for Platinum Album Awards during the Record Sales bonus or In the Photo Memories, the player gathers Elvis snapshots. Another exciting feature players have come to expect is the selection of video clips of the King in concert.

IGT has moved forward yet again with the Back to the Future slots featuring the character of Doc Brown utilizing the voice of actor Christopher Lloyd.

Add the sounds of the trio of movies, video clips, top box clock tower and free spins that move the player forward and backward and you have another winner, thanks to IGT.

Lastly, IGT will also feature its new sb products for server-based gaming applications including the sb system and sb machines which allow a casino to download entire games and configure game themes on any of its gaming machines. The Trimline sb AVP machine displays the game theme on its digital glass.

Once again, the mega slot manufacturer offers the largest and most impressive lineup of new games.

AC Coin & Slot:

A partner of IGT, A.C. Coin brings us a fun collection of newer slot versions, some of which include their patented top box bonus, Slotto sphere.

More of these top box bonus slots later.

Let’s begin with Sparky’s Red Hot Jackpots, a three reel base slot with mechanically operated miniature fireman.

Upon reaching the bonus round, you are entertained by scurrying fireman jumping into the fire truck then arriving at a burning building where 9 smoke-filled ‘bonus’ windows await your selection. All this activity is accompanied by the rock classic, Burning Down the House.

One of the penny video slots is Seaside Fries offering up burgers, hot dogs, french fries with a top box bonus round shaped like a fryer.

The innovative scrolling bonus brought to you by AC Coin shows various party scenes from the ’60’s in the top box of Bonus Party-think Animal House.
Jackpot Fantasy’s scrolling bonus takes a peek at the Cirque production show theme.
To the music of Stuck i
n the Middle with You, ’slotto’ balls and multiplying ‘lightning balls’ can add up to a whopping 40,000 credits reward.

Returning to the patented Slotto sphere concept that is married with IGT reel spinners, AC Coin offers up these exciting slot versions.

Mellionaire displays a watermelon sphere with bouncing ‘berries’ balls inside.
As with other ’sphere’ games, the players receive bonus balls, multiplier balls and bonus rounds that ‘jump’ out at them offering several bonus options.

It’s Raining Cash, a new addition, sports an umbrella inside and once the number of bonus balls is determined, the umbrella provides protection from the ‘raining bouncing balls’.

Then there’s Break the Bank where the top box sphere contains a bank vault and a mystery bonus. If you strike a Break the Bank symbol, the vault opens and spills out the bouncing balls for a surprise win.

Bonus slots are the name of the game for AC Coin and they prove it with the new line-up.

There is always a welcome mat out to new subscribers.

One Response to “Everything Las Vegas Issue 552”

  1. I thought the Barb was not owned by Harrahs. Are they going to sell out?

Does Harrah’s own Hilton too? O’Sheas is part of Hilton.

Anyway, it will be sad to see the little guys drop off the center strip one by one….
