MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL OPENS AT LAS VEGAS HILTON
HIT SHOW ADDED TO FIRST-CLASS ENTERTAINMENT ROSTER AT CLASSIC PROPERTY

Four years, forty cities and six countries after its world premiere, Menopause The Musical celebrates its international success with a new Las Vegas cast production at the Las Vegas Hilton beginning February 1, 2006.

The debut of Menopause The Musical adds to the first-class entertainment schedule at the Hilton, led by superstar Barry Manilow. The expanded roster complements the resort’s transformation through a multi-million dollar construction and renovation enhancement project that will be completed in December 2005.

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Writer/Producer Jeanie Linders created the show as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” Since its first performance, the show has evolved as a “grassroots” movement of women who deal with life after 40 and all the challenges that result in the mental, physical and spiritual freedom of the post-World War II baby boomer generation.

According to The New York Times, “[Menopause The Musical] has no trouble winning over its audience…because elsewhere the subject is almost never treated with humor from the woman’s point of view.”

Menopause The Musical opens February 1 in the Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret. Tickets are on sale now. Showtimes are Mon.-Tues. & Thurs. 7 p.m., Wed. 2 p.m., Sat. 4 p.m. & 7 p.m., Sun. 2 p.m. & 5 p.m. (Dark Friday). Tickets are $49.50 (plus tax and service charge) and can be purchased at the Las Vegas Hilton box office or by visiting www.lvhilton.com or calling 702-732-5755 or 1-800-222-5361. For group sales, call 702-884-1222.

NORM: Bette’s reps in talks with Wynn

Bette Midler’s headliner deal in Las Vegas, hinted at in this space in August, is looking like a done deal, according to insiders.

After initial contact with Caesars Palace this summer, her reps have been in talks with Wynn Las Vegas, which is certain to raise eyebrows in light of reports of “Avenue Q” and “Le Reve” being under-achievers at the box office.

If Midler ends up at Wynn, it would mean a shift back to headliner acts for Steve Wynn, who has shown a recent penchant for Broadway productions, along with the Cirque-like “Le Reve.”

“We’ve been in talks,” a Wynn representative said Saturday.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Too soon to crow about ‘Broadway West’

The imminent closing of “We Will Rock You” and reports of trouble on “Avenue Q” make you wonder if all the buzz about the “Broadway West” trend is premature.

But “Avenue Q” producer Kevin McCollum says it’s the New York Post that jumped the gun to claim the show is in trouble. “Talk to me at the six-month mark,” he says. The Wynn Las Vegas production is selling as many tickets here as it did in its early months on Broadway, he says, and the local edition hasn’t lost money in a single week since it opened in late August.

The difference between 792 seats in New York and 1,200 at Wynn does result in an empty balcony some nights. But “our advance (sales are) building every week,” he says, a sign that “the show is behaving as we expected.”

HIP HANGOUT: See and Be Seen.
Art Bar gives artists place to share their talents and customers place to feel cool.

The lime green building downtown provides a refreshing spot of color on an otherwise average-looking Main Street, while the name, Art Bar, serves as a reminder that you can’t spell party without A-R-T.

At least that’s what bar owner Jesse Garon says, explaining the success his business has had in such a short period of time. That’s because the bar, which opened in May at the edge of the valley’s burgeoning downtown arts district, has become a trendy spot among residents who are plugged into the art scene and with those who just want to hang out in a cool bar without going into a Strip casino.

“This is the part of town to keep an eye on,” Garon says, citing the recent growth and construction in the area surrounding Charleston Boulevard and Main Street.

NORM: Feathers fly for Paris Hilton beau.

A pillow fight gone awry at the Hard Rock Hotel might have turned into more than a financial nightmare for Paris Hilton’s latest millionaire boyfriend.

The fierce room trashing also might have dampened Hilton’s new relationship.

Spies tell me a sprinkler head was broken during horseplay about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, flooding rooms, setting off fire alarms and causing evacuations.

A table was thrown, shearing off the sprinkler in the ninth-floor room, several sources said.

Hilton’s baby-faced beau, 20-year-old Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos, was seen shirtless and with white feathers in his long hair, while his bodyguard told Hard Rock supervisors, “Why are you so upset? It’s all going to be paid for.”

At least four rooms suffered water damage. An informant said Niarchos, whose family is worth a reported $7.5 billion, could be charged more than $100,000 for the damage. He had to call his father to get the credit card charge OK’d, a spy said.

Four women who stayed in a room near Niarchos’ party room said the problem began when fire alarms went off twice, first at 7:30 a.m. and then a half-hour later.

Hilton, who was partying with Kelly Osbourne in the penthouse suite at the time of the pillow fight, came down to the room afterward and was overheard telling Osbourne, “I don’t want them (the Hard Rock) to think I bring in people who do this stuff.”

The four women I interviewed on Sunday showed me photographs of the damaged room. The photos revealed a room carpet coated with feathers with a garbage can placed under a leaking sprinkler nozzle.

“Every lamp was broken,” one of the women said.

“A maid told us they ruined every down pillow in the room,” another said. After security showed up, “the feather trail got heavier and heavier.”

Bellagio, Picasso and Le Cirque Receive 2006 AAA Five Diamond Award - Bellagio Only Hotel in the Country with Two Five Diamond Restaurants.

Diamonds represent brilliance, quality and luxury as do five-time Five Diamond recipients Bellagio and Picasso and three-time recipient, Le Cirque. For the third consecutive year Bellagio remains the only resort in America to house two Five Diamond award-winning restaurants under one roof.

“The AAA Five Diamond award is one of the highest compliments a restaurant or hotel can receive,” said William P. McBeath, president of Bellagio. “For Bellagio to receive this distinction five consecutive years and to be home to two Five Diamond restaurants is a tremendous honor and recognizes the level of commitment each of our employees makes.”

AAA evaluated more than 57,000 hotels and dining establishments across the United States, Canada, Caribbean and Mexico throughout a 12-month period. Of those, only 88 resorts and 62 restaurants earned the highly coveted AAA Five Diamond rating for 2006.

Le Cirque, one of only three restaurants in Nevada to have earned this honor, offers guests world-class wines, haute cuisine and luxurious service in an intimate setting.

“We complete the perfect circle from the minute the reservation is made to the minute our guests leave the restaurant,” said Mario Maccioni, creator of Le Cirque. “We strive each day to provide an exemplary experience for each and every guest.”

Le Cirque shares the distinction of being one of only three Nevada Five Diamond dining award winners with Picasso, another of Bellagio’s fine restaurants. Picasso made history in 2002 when it became the first Five Diamond restaurant in Las Vegas history.

“We set out to create special, memorable moments for our guests each day,” said Julian Serrano, executive chef at Picasso. “The Five Diamond Award tells us that we are successful in that goal.” The regions of France and Spain where Picasso spent much of his life inspire Chef Serrano’s memorable, Mediterranean cuisine. Picasso masterpieces, as well as a collection of his charming ceramic pieces, further delight the senses of diners enjoying the Picasso experience.

For the ultimate destination resort, look no further than Bellagio, an ideal place for beauty and elegance. Bellagio became the first and only Las Vegas hotel and casino in history to be awarded the AAA Five Diamond Award in 2002. Today, the resort received this distinction for the fifth consecutive year.

To be considered for AAA rating and approval, restaurants and lodgings undergo a thorough evaluation by one of 65 full-time, trained, professional tourism editors. Five Diamond establishments go through a much more extensive review. The entire experience, from arrival through departure, is taken into account.

“As the industry and guests continue to raise the bar on expectations, Bellagio, Le Cirque and Picasso continue to meet the challenge,” said Kelly Bell, manager of Supplier Relations for AAA Nevada. “This level of achievement requires the highest quality of service and facilities. We are convinced that these properties will exceed guest expectations.”

McBeath added, “We expanded Bellagio’s offering in December 2004 with the opening of the Spa Tower. Our promise was to continue to provide the same level of service our guests have come to expect. The 2006 AAA Five Diamond Award confirms we delivered on that promise.”

The expansion includes an additional 928 rooms and suites; the 65,000-square-foot Spa & Salon Bellagio which offers unique venues and a fusion of international treatments; an additional 60,000 square feet of meeting and convention space including an exhibition kitchen; the casually elegant restaurant Sensi and Jean-Philippe Pâtisserie, a European pastry shop unlike anything else in the world.

How To Play Three Card Poker by Bill Burton

Three Card Poker is becoming on of the most popular new table games. Players are discovering that Three Card Poker is not only easy to play but it is a lot of fun.

The game is played with a single deck of 52 cards. Three Card Poker is actually two games in one. There is the Play/Ante game where you are playing against the dealer to see who has the highest hand. There is also the Pair Plus game where you are wagering on whether or not you will be dealt a pair or better. In most casinos you can bet on either of the games but some casinos require you to make an Ante Bet in order to bet the Pair Plus portion of the game.

Thomas works with cat-like precision
By Penny Levin

Magic of Rick Thomas
Where: Stardust
When: 2 & 4 p.m., Thurs. - Tues.
Cost: $21.95, $27.45
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS

You might think that illusionist Rick Thomas would be jealous of the attention his magnificent co-workers receive when they perform with him at the Stardust. Instead he grins from ear to ear when he talks about them.

The particular “co-workers” in question are white Bengal tigers, orange Bengal tigers, cockatoos and doves, but he also praises the lovely two-legged dancers who share the stage with the entourage.

Thomas has been mesmerizing audiences with his magic for more than 20 years and it becomes obvious how much he adores his animal family when he performs every afternoon (except Wednesdays).

“It’s important to me that all the animals receive the best of care,” Thomas said. The cats and Thomas have a mutual respect for each other and that is something to roar about.

The show moves at a dazzling pace and includes some of Thomas’ trademark illusions that include shrinking a snarling 500-pound Royal Bengal tiger into a cuddly cub, and levitating a showgirl high above the stage and then making her disappear.

Fans are thrilled to see him interact with his beautiful tigers and watch the cat-like precision of both man and beast. Both have something else in common. They move with a litheness and grace. The explanation for the cats is obvious—that is their natural movement. And, actually you can say the same for Thomas, who was a national ballroom dancing champion in his early theatrical days.

As a result, the handsome 6-foot-4-inch showman employs intricate choreography to embellish his large-scale illusions that not only involve a troupe of exciting showgirls, but also exotic birds and motorcycles in addition to the jungle cats.

Thomas has dreamed of bringing magic to the stage since he was a child and now his dream has come true.

“I believe in the art of dreaming. I make it up, then I make it reality,” he said. Joining this dream are Sampson and the other cats: Star, a 2-year-old white tiger; Morpheous, a 3-year-old orange Bengal tiger; Morpheous, Jr., a 3-month-old orange Bengal tiger; and Maxmillian a 6-year-old orange Bengal tiger. There are also two 20-year-old cockatoos, Buddy and Frenchy.

The performer has won numerous honors, which include the prestigious “Magician of the Year” award presented by the Academy of Magical Arts. He was named “Stage Magician of the Year” on the television special “The World Magic Awards,” and has appeared on two NBC “World’s Greatest Magic” specials.

Thomas also starred in his own ABC special, “The Magic of Rick Thomas.” TV audiences on A&E, the Discovery Channel and the Learning Channel have also seen his illusions.

Diamond days here: Alex gets AAA’s top ranking in first year.

When travel club AAA named its Five-Diamond restaurants and hotels, a new gem joined the local crown jewels already on the list.

Late last week, Wynn Las Vegas’ Alex, a French restaurant with prix-fixe menus starting at $120 per person, gained membership in the elite AAA Five-Diamond club after less than seven months in operation.

Patti Shock, chairwoman of the tourism and convention department in the Harrah College of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said it’s “very unusual” for a restaurant to nab five diamonds in its first year. She attributed Alex’s high rank to the experience of its lead chef and namesake, Alessandro Stratta. Stratta was executive chef at The Mirage’s Renoir, which had earned five diamonds from AAA and five stars from Mobil Travel Guide before it closed last year so that Stratta could open Alex.

The F&B team at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino has created a fantastic new and creative dish that plays off of the sensuality of champagne. The elegant winter dessert, entitled Ménage a Dom, features a trio of flavored Dom Perignon champagne sno-cones served atop a glass tree with a demitasse spoon! The 4-5 hour preparation process lightly whisks the tasty bubbles until the air is removed. The three flavors that make up the tasty trio are raspberry, strawberry and mango.

Pure will play host as the official after-party venue for Thursday’s EARTH TO AMERICA! comedy fest that will feature comics and stars such as Jack Black, Larry David, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Steve Martin, Ray Romano, Martin Short, Cedric The Entertainer, Wanda Sykes, Robin Williams, the cast of Avenue Q, and Ben Stiller. EARTH TO AMERICA! will be taped at The Comedy Festival at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Nov. 17, for telecast Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

Two Las Vegan’s, Rich ‘The Locust’ LeFevre and Ron Koch have qualified for the “Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship” in Chattanooga, They’re set to battle eating guru and reigning champ Takeru Kobayashi for the $10,000 cash prize. At last year’s competition, the ever-freaky Kobayashi consumed 69 Krystal burgers in eight minutes to set a new world record. Perhaps the most compelling question is how can anyone eat even ONE Krystal burger, yet alone dozens of them? (We anticipate a litany of bad juju from our friends in the southeast for this last comment.)

HOMETOWN FAVORITES: Halloween, Vegas-Style.
Who needs Batman when kids can dress up as a showgirl or high roller?

We Las Vegans are known for taking Halloween seriously.

So, why, we ask, are many of us so unimaginative when it comes to putting together our kids’ Halloween costumes?

Witch, check. Vampire, right. Ghost, yawn. Scarecrow, whatever.

Given this town’s odd past and even weirder present, why, we think, can’t we come up with costumes that really illustrate what Las Vegas is about?

It’s in answer to that nobody-ever-asked question that we herewith offer a few suggestions for Halloween costumes that speak to the heart of this city.
