KARAOKE NIGHTS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO JAX
Want to sing at the Riviera Hotel and Casino on the Strip? Now you can! Every Friday and Saturday night, an open microphone is available to brave souls who care to stop by Jax restaurant, located in the world-famous Riviera Hotel and Casino, to warble a tune or two. From 8 p.m. until midnight, you never know who will pop in to perform.
What is Jax? “It’s a unique restaurant,” says partner/owner Chef Jacques LeForestier, who, along with Chef Charles Limbach, opened their first restaurant, La Chirane, in Seillams, France, in 1970. “The restaurant was so successful, with a name change to JAX, we knew it had to expand and we wanted to bring it somewhere to the United States. We were not sure where it would thrive. Hollywood? New York? Sin City?
“In 2002, a mutual friend, Producer David Wright, knew of a location in Las Vegas he thought would be perfect. Before you knew it, we were in negotiations with Riviera management and after much ‘intercontinental paperwork,’ the Riviera became our home!”
Specializing in European country food, the independently owned venue is located next to the Splash Bar in the casino of the resort. The restaurant opens onto a portion of a slot area adjacent to the Riviera’s smash hit production show, “Splash,” and operates from 7:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, extending to midnight on Friday and Saturday for Karaoke nights.
LeForestier continues, “I like to think of us as a convivial venue. You can sit down by yourself and have a cup of coffee with a croissant and be seated right next to a family settling down to pizza pies, while they are next to a couple who dropped by for quick sodas and deli sandwiches!
“We are known for our simplicity and quality of food. We want you to take a break from your activities, come in for the moment, enjoy. . . . Stop by in the mornings and you will find freshly baked pastries.”
All baking is done on the premises. Gavina Family coffees are served. Good wine and great foods all make this a superb dining experience.
For more information, or to find out what the daily specials are, call: (702) 697-4233. The Riviera is located at 2901 Las Vegas Boulevard South, and can be found on the Internet by clicking www.rivierahotel.com.

MEN’S NIGHTS OUT AT SYN CITY?
YES, INDEED!
A little known secret has now become widespread. Remember Connie Francis? Move over, Connie! The men in Las Vegas are now singing, “Where the Girls Are… Someone waits for me…” And those girls can be found at the Riviera Hotel and Casino’s intimate ultra-lounge, Syn City, every night (except Mondays and Tuesdays), beginning at 10 p.m.
The hubbub increases on Fridays and Saturdays at 1:00 a.m. when the cast of the Riviera’s male strip revue, “American Storm” descends upon the club to mix and mingle with the lounge patrons. They provide unexpected interactions with the customers, as well as some wild photo and autograph opportunities. Word-of-mouth has traveled fast and now the males flock to the club to catch the girls.
“When those down-home ‘American Storm’ fellers (sic) hit the dance floor, the club becomes a sea of women. I get there around midnight, to watch the tide come in!” jokes Harley Winston, of Pasadena, California.
While the Riviera celebrates 50 years in the resort industry, its Le Bistro Theatre converts into Syn City, The Nightclub, every night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday. While reservations are not necessary, early arriving IS recommended.
Featuring resident DJ’s Bryan Wyld and Dynamixx of the Syn City Mechanixx, live music (keyboard, percussion and wild sax), flare bartenders and the Riv’s “devilishly-costumed” cocktail waitresses, the party atmosphere gives themed nights with “something for everyone.” The Syn City slogan? “Bring Only Your Temptation” is perfect for any man or woman, 21 years or older!
Wild Women Wednesdays feature “wild, crazy contests” for great prizes. All women get in free and receive one-dollar drinks all night.
Prepare yourself for Nuts and Bolts Thursdays and Fantasy Fridays and every Saturday Night becomes New Year’s Eve in Syn City with a champagne toast and Balloon Drop filled with more prizes.
Exotic fashion shows are featured on Synful Sundays when all female entertainers get in free and receive a Synful Treat. Again, for the ladies, all drinks are one dollar.
“I come to Vegas many weekends, especially for the clubbing,” boasts Maynard Furlong, from Seattle, Washington. “I hope the secret doesn’t get out, otherwise all the bachelors in Vegas will be at Syn City every weekend. That DJ Bryan really knows how to throw a party!”
For Reservations and club information, call (702) 794-9426, or click on www.rivierahotel.com. Admission is always $20.00, which includes two drinks.

NEW SURVEY: Gas prices could hurt LV gaming.
The Las Vegas gaming industry could be in for a rough ride this fall if gasoline prices pass $3 a gallon in Southern California, a recent survey suggests.
The research by MRC Group, Nevada’s largest market research firm, found Las Vegas is likely to lose 48 percent — or about 5 million — of its Southern California drive-in customers if gasoline prices get stuck above $3 per gallon.
Roughly 10 million of Las Vegas’ visitors in 2004 were drive-in customers from Southern California, or about 27 percent of the city’s total 37.4 million visitors.
Further, the survey suggests higher gasoline prices would lead the remaining drive-in visitors to seek air transportation or some other means, although whether they would come at all would be determined by the cost and the availability of flights.

Blue Man Group: Back to Basics
These colorful characters engage the senses
By Carla J. Zvosec
Blue Man Group
Where: Venetian
When: 7 & 10 p.m. daily, beginning Oct. 10, 2005.
Cost: $75, $95, $110
Info: (866) 641-SHOW
Bluephoria–what exactly is it other than a cool word to say? Well, according to Michael Quinn, one of the two artistic directors for Blue Man Group, it’s that “exalted widget twittering” that you feel when you “forget where you are, that this is theater, that you’re looking at guys in blue makeup, and you’re having this wonderful group experience that’s joyful and euphoric.”
While this might sound like a big bill to fill, Blue Man Group is more than equipped to handle the challenge. The production, which recently left behind a successful, more-than-five-year run at the Luxor, re-opens its redesigned and remodified show on Oct. 10 in a new custom-built theater at the Venetian resort.
Co-founder Chris Wink explained that, “The changes we are making are meant to boost the audience’s elation to a whole new level.”
The new theater seats nearly 1,800, but don’t let the room’s capacity fool you–every seat in the house is a great one, allowing all to be up close and personal with the production’s colorful characters.
“I would say the biggest thing we got out of developing the space and being able to work with the theater architects and engineers is that we think that it’s going to be a more intimate experience … and it’s proving to be,” said Quinn.
Unlike any other production currently on the Las Vegas Strip, Blue Man playfully engages our primordial side, transporting us into a world where things are simpler and often whimsical; where having fun with paint, Twinkies and Cap’n Crunch is the norm.
Starting out as three good friends with some very cool ideas–Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Wink–doing street performances in New York City in the late ’80s, Blue Man Group has significantly evolved over the years. The guys even have developed some of their own musical instruments, such as the “Back Pack Tubulum” and “Airpole,” out of PVC pipe and flexible hosing, to accompany the intense and invigorating tribal-like drumming in the show. In doing so, the guys have created an exceptional and unique concert experience that literally brings goose bumps to the flesh.
But music isn’t the only stand-out feature in Blue Man Group–just about everything could be described as innovative. From such quirky antics as making a sculpture out of “moistened” marshmallows, to making a “living” piece of artwork, to bronze statues dancing before your eyes, this show is virtually a playground for the senses. Now go get Bluephoric!

Nightclub With A Strip View
Burlesque dancers are part of the mix
By Grace Bascos
Tangerine
Where: Treasure Island
When: 10 p.m.-4 a.m., Tues.-Sat.
Cost: $20
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS
The modern look and feel of Tangerine hits you immediately as you pass through the curtains near the entrance. The dance floor is framed by a mellow-orange (daresay, tangerine) billowy fabric and a low, backlit bar. The inside is lovely enough, especially when the burlesque dancers put on their show four times a night. Accompanied by a three-piece band, these ladies shake and shimmy until they’re wearing next-to-nothing. Guess they’re not lying when they say that Tangerine is the only nightclub with a Strip view!
Outside, however, is the place to be, especially since Las Vegas has cooled down and the night air is spectacular. Overlooking the moat outside Treasure Island, the exterior patio is one of the best places to view Sirens of TI, the casino’s swashbuckling adventure show. When the show’s not going on, the music outside is fun and hip, with a drummer on a pedestal banging the beats to compliment the DJ’s music.
The crowd is cool and eager to mingle; the service is attentive and hot. Watch the Strip and its many tourists pass you by as you sit comfortably on white leather sofas, sipping cocktails and enjoying the vibe. Marvel in the fact that, yes, you’re in one of the coolest lounges in town, and yes, that is a true-to-scale Jolly Roger pirate ship, and those really are tempting sirens!

Slot Payback Percentages by Bill Burton
Most slot players have seen the advertisements or billboards proclaiming that the XYZ casino has the loosest slots in town. These ads may even say that the machines have a 98 percent payback percentage. In the casino you may see a sign reading that machines in a certain carousel have a guaranteed return of 99 percent. While all these claims may be truthful, they can be deceptive to the average player.
Payback is the overall percentage that a machine will return to the player in the long run. These figures are programmed into the machines computer chip and are set by the manufacturer to the specifications that the casino wishes to use for that machine. This may be anywhere from 75 to 99 percent. Some states regulate the minimum payback that a machine can return.

Updated Show Review: Clint Holmes
By Rick Garman
“My name is Mikey, I’ve got a nickel, I’ve got a nickel shiny and new. I’m going to buy me all sorts of candy, that’s what I’m gonna do.” Okay, now that you know who Clint Holmes is (provided you remember that song from the 70’s) we can get past the biggest hurdle this talented entertainer has with his audiences: no one knows what to expect. I’m here to tell you you’re in for a treat.
At the beginning of his show at Harrah’s, singer Holmes takes the stage with a crack band and is faced with a stone-faced audience that is practically daring him to be entertaining. From what I understand this is a pretty common occurrence. But Holmes’ talent, energy, emotion, and sheer chutzpah quickly wins over the crowd and by the end of the performance he had people standing, cheering, and begging for more.
Holmes describes his show as a “musical journey” but I’d prefer to call it a Vegas throwback. I wasn’t around during the glory days of the Frank, Sammy, Dean, Englebert, or even 70’s era Wayne Newton, but Holmes’ show is what I imagine they were like. He sings, dances, tells jokes and stories, and connects with the audience on a level that isn’t even attempted by today’s MTV ready artists. Heck, he even goes into the audience to shake hands with people while he’s singing and somehow he manages to make it not look cheesy.
The musical selections are a broad mix of flavors and styles, from Broadway to Jamaican flavored selections to old standards and even a little light opera thrown in. It’s all done with such energy and obvious love of the performance that you just can’t help but be entertained.
He also peppers the evening with personal observations throughout, including tales of his mixed-race upbringing, loving honorariums to his parents (with his sister as a back-up singer), and a particularly moving story about his recent successful battle with colon cancer. The fact that this guy is here at all is astounding – the fact that he gives such an enthusiastic performance mere months after such a devastating health crisis is a miracle.
As the evening progresses, Holmes continues to belt out the tunes with amazing passion, as if attempting to constantly top himself. This, combined with his self-deprecating sense of humor (how would you like to have “My name is Mikey…” follow you around for 30 years?) and limitless energy all mesh to form an evening in the Las Vegas theater that is just as entertaining as when I saw the show the first time a couple of years ago. Although the bulk of the material is all new, the night is just as enjoyable.
As mentioned earlier, the widely diverse audience cheered him and on my first visit several actually threatened me when they saw I was there to review the show. “You better say good things!” they said as wagged their fingers at me. They needn’t have worried then or now.
Take a journey back to Vegas days gone by with Clint Holmes. You’ll probably wind up cheering as well.

Shows to Keep Your Heart Pounding
Whether they’re steamy and sexy or tasteful and artsy, Las Vegas adult productions keep popping up. The following is merely a condensed list of productions from the city’s biggest players; they’re also among the best:
• Chippendales: To keep these beefcakes happy, the Rio revamped its space and gave them their own showroom, complete with a posh VIP area and gossip pit-turned bathroom. Sexed-up ladies even get a chance to catch up with the objects of their desire after the show in the aptly-named Flirt lounge.
• “Crazy Girls”: An homage to seven pairs of beautiful buttocks, “Crazy Girls” is a bachelor party on steroids, as the girls turn into biker babes, pole dancers and perform naughty chair routines. If your blood’s not boiling on the way out, there’s something wrong with you.
• “Erocktica”: A hot and sweaty production, courtesy of Greg Thompson Productions (whose other titilating show, “Skintight,” excites guests at Harrah’s). Singer/dancer Gabriella Versace & Co. tear it up to hard rock hits from AC/DC, Aerosmith and more.
• “Fashionistas”: A stage production based on John Stagliano’s adult film of the same name, “Fashionistas” follows the love triangle involving a young fashion designer, her female boss and a world-famous male designer. With fetish fashions, elaborate fashion shows and one of the best production teams in Vegas.
• “Jubilee!”: It’s pure Vegas spectacle: all showgirls, all of the time. Sure, the costumes are among the most lavish we’ve seen, but there’s no kidding that what crowds really want is to see them come off. Watch for the erotic Samson and Delilah scene; you can’t get much hotter than that.
• “La Femme”: Modeled after the famed Crazy Horse in Paris, France, light patterns fuse with the nearly naked body in this sensual, “art-of-the-nude” production. The provocative choreography takes full advantage of the dancers’ ballet training.
• “Splash”: For 20 years, this variety show’s specialty acts — as well as its showgirls — have gotten hotter and hotter, and the production has shown no signs of slowing down. In fact, it just underwent yet another update to coincide with Las Vegas’ 100th birthday.
• “Skintight”: From the streets of Rio to the center-Strip, Carnivale has gone wild at Harrah’s, where a bevy of beautiful topless dancers pays homage with brightly colored plumes and barely-there costumes. For the guys, the sultry Shannon O’Keefe will keep your blood racing; gals will enjoy the hot Darryl Ross.
• “Zumanity” — No matter what your persuasion, you’re bound to find something to turn you on here; two female dancers cavorting in a giant fish bowl, a male dance of seduction or a devilish sprite named Jesus are but a few of the options.

Las Vegas Historic Museum Opens At The Tropicana Resort & Casino
The newest addition to the Tropicana Resort & Casino is the Las Vegas Historic Museum, an exhibit that allows customers to take a peek into Las Vegas’ underworld, focusing on gaming, mobsters, entertainers and the brothels of Nevada.
Many interesting items can be found in the Gambling & Gangsters section of the museum. At the entrance of the museum, a video focuses on the Las Vegas Mafia and covers the rise and fall of mob influence and involvement. Several giant-size photos of well-known mobsters, such as Bugsy Siegel, Frank Rosenthal, and Al Capone decorate the walls. Bugsy’s death certificate and Los Angeles Times articles with interesting stories about the mob days of Vegas are also on display. A replica of the “black book” can also be found, listing the names of all “bad guys” who have been banned from casinos.
Several entertainers are represented in the museum. Statues of three members of the ‘Rat Pack’ - Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra - are displayed to symbolize their days of performing in the Copa Room at the Sands. Playing on a monitor nearby are scenes from the original “Ocean’s Eleven” movie, starring “Old Blue Eyes.” Memorabilia items of other entertainers, such as Louis Prima, Judy Garland, Wayne Newton, Elvis Presley and Liberace are also on display, including a photo of the Beatles performing at the Sahara.
Another section of the museum focuses on brothels in Nevada, giving customers a look into legalized prostitution. Back in 1950, 35 legal brothels were in operation in Nevada , including Mabel’s Whorehouse, Madam Kitty’s, Sheri’s Ranch, the Green Lantern, the Mustang Ranch, and the Chicken Ranch, all of which are represented in the Las Vegas Historic Museum. Some of the items on display that could be found in a brothel back in their heyday consist of books the girl’s read, liquor decanters from 1960, old calendars, colorful lamps, an old-fashioned pink telephone, and a hairdryer. Brass tokens used to pay the women are also on display.
A variety of items from Las Vegas hotel/casinos, past and present, as well as information on several of the developers, can also be found in the museum. Highly collectible commemorative decanters from the Sahara, Harold’s Club, and Caesars Palace fill one display case. Champaign bottles that were found in the Hacienda and the Landmark are also part of the exhibit. Memorabilia from the El Rancho fire can also be found. Vintage slot machines are set up in several areas of the museum, including one that was housed at the Golden Nugget. Several casino gaming chips and swizzle sticks are also present. Photos and other memorabilia detailing two of Las Vegas most famous developers, Steve Wynn and Howard Hughes, are also available for viewing.
More videos can be seen throughout the museum. One video tells the story of the various casino implosions and fires that have occurred over the past decade in Las Vegas. Another video shows a retrospective of the Las Vegas icon, Showgirls.
The Las Vegas Historic Museum is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p .m. General admission is $6.95 for adults and $5.95 for seniors. Must be 18 years or older or accompanied by an adult to enter museum.

NORM: A Friday madhouse at the Madhouse.
With a potential TV deal on the line, comedy show producer Jeff Beacher couldn’t have scripted a wilder scenario.
There was Paris Hilton being carried onstage during the season-opening show of “Beacher’s Madhouse” on Friday, with Ted Harbert, president and CEO of E! Networks, in the audience to determine whether to make the “Madhouse” a cable network staple.
With Hilton serving as the ultimate good sport, Beacher’s anything-goes show took its zaniest spin at The Joint, the Hard Rock Hotel’s show venue.
Late in the show, Leonid the Magnificent, a 6-foot-9-inch Russian who wears boas and feathery wings while balancing a sword on his forehead, went into the crowd, scooped up Hilton and brought her onstage.
After Hilton spanked Leonid’s bare bottom, he propped her up on her hands and knees like a show pony and climbed on, flattening the elegantly dressed heiress face first. Then Leonid laid down on her back, and, umm, we’ll leave it at that.
When the horseplay ended, Hilton was frantically trying to prevent a wardrobe malfunction, using both hands to keep the top of her dress from falling down. “My fiance is going to kill me for that,” said Hilton, as she stepped off the stage.
The crowd loved it, and so, apparently, did Harbert. After the show, he gave a thumbs-up to Beacher and Hard Rock execs Peter and Harry Morton for a weekly “Madhouse” deal on E!
If the deal gets inked, Beacher told me the show will start filming this fall and air in February.
“It will be like `Saturday Night Live’ with celebrity hosts, stand-up comedians and musical performances,” said Beacher, who brought the “Madhouse” from New York City in early 2004.

Jury: New Frontier must pay $110,000 to card counter.
A Clark County District Court jury has awarded a gambler $110,000 for an incident in 2001 in which he was detained in a security office at the New Frontier.
Wednesday, the jury found the New Frontier, its security chief and a security guard liable for false imprisonment, assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence.
Earlier this year, the court dismissed claims for defamation, violation of civil rights and unlawfully searching the gambler’s personal property.

Q&Accent: 2000-2005
For nearly six years the Q&Accent has been a favorite component in the Sun’s entertainment coverage. Over the course of nearly 300 Q&As we have spanned the celebrity universe, interviewing personalties as diverse as Robert Goulet (our first subject in January 2000) to Carrot Top.
Today the Sunday Q&Accent makes its final appearance; a week from today the Las Vegas Sun will be a new morning paper. To send Q&Accent off in style, members of the Accent staff collected some of their favorite exchanges. The highlights follow.
Enjoy!

Video Poker Strategy by Bill Burton
One of the reasons for the popularity of Video Pokers is the fact that some of the games return over 100 percent and other “full pay” games offer close to 100 percent over the long run when you play the correct video poker strategy. Unfortunately a few mistakes when playing can wipe out the little advantage that you have. It is very important that you lean the strategy for each game and play them correctly. Each video poker game has its own strategy. For example you can not use the strategy for Jacks or Better when playing Deuces Wild.
Learning a new game or playing correctly at the casino is really quite easy when you use a video poker strategy card. A strategy card will show you the correct way to play each hand that you are dealt. By following the cards advice you will keep the hand that offers the highest possible return.

Very good review on Clint Holmes. It amazes us how much energy he has. We saw him a few months before and a few months after his surgery and his stamina was the same for both shows.
Boo, Harrahs, if they don’t reconsider and resign him.
Thanks very much for posting the TV listings! Great idea.
