Everything Las Vegas Issue 544
November 1st, 2005
I just want to remind you that I will be in Las Vegas from 11/22-11/28th and I am planning a members get together. If you are going to be in Las Vegas at that time and would like to attend the get together, just email me at mrvegas98@aol.com and include the dates you will be there and the number of people you will be. I will only be making this announcement a few more times as final numbers have to be turned in. As of now, it looks likes the Imperial Palace will open it’s 5th Floor Dining Plaza early to accomondate the get together. They have even offered to bring the bartender in early also!
Steve’s Soapbox:
I just want to say has upset I was to learn of the upcoming closing of what I think is the best show in Las Vegas, “We Will Rock You.” But I can’t say I didn’t see it coming. Harrah’s in another one of their mindboggling executive decisions trimmed 30 minutes from this wonderful show saying they wanted to make it more of a musical. Even though I have not seen the shortened version, I can just imagine what the end result was. (I think they wanted to rename the show, “I Want To Block You.”
I guess the Producer’s just got tired of all of Harrah’s B.S. and decided to pack up and leave and I don’t blame them.
This also give more credibility to the rumors that Clint Holmes and the Scintas contracts will not be renued. Does any of this make sense to you? I just don’t get it.

Las Vegas Top Ten Values: November 2005
1. Complete Steak Dinner - Ellis Island - 24 hours - $4.95
The $4.95 complete steak dinner at Ellis Island first appeared in the Top Ten in November 2000, which means it’s entering its sixth year as Las Vegas’ top bargain. What’s amazing, especially in this day and age, is the fact that since the day it was introduced at this price (it actually debuted at an incomprehensible $2.95), the fare has never increased and the quality has never decreased. The 10-ounce filet-cut sirloin, salad, green beans, potato, and rolls are served 24/7. Bravo, Ellis Island, for five uninterrupted years of this classic Las Vegas deal.
2. Shrimp Cocktail - Golden Gate - 11-3 am - 99¢
The 99¢ shrimp cocktail at the Deli at the Golden Gate (#2) is in its forty-sixth year—and its 22nd (with only a few breaks) in LVA. What month it all began is anyone’s guess, but like the steak, the quality of this great snack is as high as ever, even if the price was raised once. Note that it isn’t available from 3 to 11 am.
3. Ham & Eggs - Arizona Charlie’s Decatur - 24 hours - $2.49
A third venerable Top Ten meal deal is available at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur: a huge ham steak, two eggs any style, potatoes, and toast for $2.49 (#3). Or get steak & eggs for just 50¢ more.
4. Souvenir Photo - Imperial Palace - noon-8 pm - Free
The free souvenir photo at Imperial Palace (#4) is one that’s lasted years longer than we thought it would (it entered its third year last August). Simply show up on the sidewalk in front of IP to get your picture snapped, then pick it up in the casino in the time it takes you to walk to the slot club booth. Of course, there’s no guarantee that the free photo will survive the Harrah’s takeover, so get your keepsake while you can. Meanwhile, if you plan your shoot for the evening hours, you can catch the IP’s Dealertainers. It’s a total party scene, whether they’re just dealing or breaking for an impromptu impersonator show.
5. Funbook - Stratosphere - Daily - Free
The Stratosphere funbook (#5) is, without question, the top funbook in town considering the combination of expected value and ease of acquisition. The blackjack coupon alone is worth $10 and the whole package just under $20. And players club members are entitled to one every week.
6. Casbar Lounge - Sahara - Daily - Free
The Casbar Lounge at the Sahara (#6) continues to put on top-notch free entertainment nightly. Go to saharalasvegas.com to check out the extensive line-up for November: Freddie Eckstein, Dixie Dooley, David Van Such, the Checkmates, Denise Clemente, Lena Prima, Pete Willcox, and George Bugatti—none with a drink minimum or admission charge. While you’re at the Sahara, play the $50-for-$40 blackjack coupon, one of the best gambling premiums in the POV (if you’re an end-of-the-year trial member, the free money pays for your entire trial subscription).
7. Buffet - Mirage - Daily - $12.50-$22.50
We’re sticking with the Mirage’s Cravings Buffet (#7) as our choice for the best smorgy in town. The selection is extensive: American, Italian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Asian noodles, dim sum, raw bar, rotisserie, carving station, salads, and desserts. The room is stainless steel, spotless, and gorgeous. And the prices are the best of all of the gourmet buffets.
8. Mac King - Harrah’s - Tues.-Sat. - $7.99/$21.95
Mac King at Harrah’s (#8) is a throwback to the old-time Las Vegas acts that started out small, then made it to the big time with talent, dedication, and perseverance. Harrah’s has helped the cause by keeping the price ultra low.
9. Prime Rib Dinner - California - 5-10 pm daily - $6.99
The prime rib special at the California downtown (#9) is a Top Tenner for the big cooked-to-order cut, potato, veggie, and roll, all for just $6.99. But it also comes with a full salad bar (worth $4.75 alone) and a cherries jubilee for dessert. You won’t find another prime rib special in Las Vegas with those extras, not even at three times the price.
10. MNF Parlay - Sam’s Town Boulder Station - Mondays - Free
Monday Night Football is in full swing and the parties at Sam’s Town and Boulder Station (#10) are too. The games are shown on big screens at both, but it’s the free hot dog and beer that you get just for showing up that puts these two on the list. These casinos are only a couple miles apart on Boulder Highway, so you can get two dogs and two beers during one game.

Explore the erotic world of Fantasy
By Penny Levin
Fantasy
Where: Luxor
When: 8 & 10 p.m. Mon., 10:30 p.m. Tues.-Wed. & Fri.-Sun.
Cost: $49.49
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS
Let your fantasy become a reality as you embark on a sensual journey with the gorgeous women dancers in the Luxor’s Fantasy topless dance show in the Atrium Theater. The show, produced by famed Emmy Award-winner Anita Mann, has been revamped from the original Midnight Fantasy production and is receiving rave reviews.
“We wanted to make the show younger, hipper and fresher,” said Mann, who has choreographed the Miss America Pageant and TV’s “Solid Gold Dancers,” among other shows.
Fantasy includes nine sultry dancers and features lead dancer Jennifer Ross and singer Stephanie Jordan. Singer-dancer-comic-impressionist Sean Cooper, the only male in the production, provides the comedy and brings down the house with his Tina Turner impression.
Mann’s goal is to produce a show in which both the audience and the cast have fun. “Fantasy isn’t meant to be like other traditional Vegas dance shows,” she said. “We’re contemporary and have the MTV look or what you would see at a live concert.”
She credits the work of famed Hollywood choreographers Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia for much of the show’s new feel. Both men, highly regarded in the concert and video TV fields, brought new dance numbers to the show, including choreography for “Roxanne” by The Police and “Red Light” by Usher.
The former number is performed by all the seductive dancers whose costumes suggest they are sexy ladies of the night who entice men. The gorgeous black-haired, blue-eyed Ross appears with her hair in an updo and clad in a red business suit.
Minutes later, she is standing sans suit and top and joins her cast mates in the “Red Light” number. “We all try to connect with audience members and make them feel they are part of the show,” Ross said. “The numbers are designed to let each lady’s personality come out,” she added.
Both she and Mann view the show as a song and dance production with enough variety that it appeals to men, women and couples.
“The show is revealing and sensual, but also theatrical. However, I wanted to make sure there is no fourth wall between them (the performers) and their audience,” Mann said.
“The dancers enjoy themselves and working with each other, and I want that to show from the stage,” she said. “I like them to smile at each other and the audience.”
One especially intriguing number is “Black Velvet,” where three of the dancers use a long piece of black elastic and perform what is best described as an adult version of the children’s game “Cat’s Cradle.”
“It’s very sexy and edgy,” said Ross.

Leave your inhibitions at Zumanity’s door
By Carey Rossi
Zumanity
Where: New York-New York
When: 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Fri.-Tue.
Cost: $85, $95, $250
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS
One thing’s guaranteed: Zumanity is unlike any Cirque du Soleil production you’ve ever seen. Unlike the grand scale of ‘O’ or KÀ, the theater feels more like an intimate cabaret setting. And, perhaps before you’ve even made it to your seat, you may find yourself the object of the resident gigolo’s flirtatious advances, or being served strawberries by one of the … uhh … buxom Botero Sisters (clad in nothing but thong bikinis and fishnet bodysuits). It’s at that point you’ll realize all your inhibitions should’ve been left at the door.
Zumanity is a journey through the beauty of human sexuality. Emceed by the “Mistress of Seduction,” the colorful ensemble of characters mesh into an exhilarating circus, with contortionists, dancers and aerial artists providing endless entertainment throughout the show. Each vignette helps you explore places untouched, untasted and unthought of outside the boudoir; by exploring the many sides of sex, from the experience of a first kiss to an erotic self-bondage ritual, Zumanity aims to engage your senses and break down societal inhibitions.
A word of warning—if you purchase the $125 per person seats on the front-row sofas, you could very likely become a part of the “Orgy” scene, joining the cast onstage near the show’s finale. Like the rest of Zumanity, it’s wild, uninhibited but, at the same time, lighthearted and fun.

New Year’s Eve In Las Vegas
Nobody does it like Vegas.
The Strip fills with revelers. Fireworks explode over the hotels. The casinos are body-to-body, the showrooms filled with A-list entertainers and Vegas is more gloriously alive than you’ve ever seen it. New Year’s Eve in Vegas is a world-class celebration, and this guide will help you find your way through it with lists of parties, headliners and more.

Cosmopolitan Unveiled by Rick Garman
A groundbreaking of sorts was held for the new Cosmopolitan resort complex on The Strip recently that unveiled new details about the project. I say “of sorts” because rain forced the cancellation of the actual ceremonial shovel turning, but the company in charge of the project held a ceremonial unveiling anyway.
Cosmopolitan is a $1.8 billion hotel, condominium, and casino complex planned for approximately eight acres of land just south of Bellagio, effectively surrounding the Jockey Club time-share complex. It will feature two towers of around 60 stories each with a total of 3,000 units, 2,000 of which will be condominiums plus 1,000 hotel rooms managed under the Hyatt banner. The roofs of each tower will feature pools with, presumably, some of the best views in all of Las Vegas.
The owners of the condos will be able to place their units into a rental pool so average Joe’s like you and me can stay there when the mortgage payers aren’t in residence. Even before the earth was turned (or not, as the case may be) the developers have already sold 1,300 units valued at over $100 million.
The two towers will be linked by a common building that will contain a 75,000-square-foot casino and more than 300,000-square-feet of restaurant, entertainment, and retail space. The façade of that building will be all glass so pedestrians and drivers on The Strip will be able to see inside.
The Cosmopolitan is scheduled to open in 2008, about a year or so ahead of the massive Project CityCenter complex of hotels and condos being built next door on the current Boardwalk Hotel site.

“Official” Las Vegas Documentary To Debut on PBS
By Rick Garman.
As part of the ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration of Las Vegas, Insignia Films has partnered with PBS American Experience series to create “Las Vegas: An Unconventional History,” the officially sanctioned documentary project about Sin City’s past. It will debut on November 14th and 15th on PBS (check your local listings for exact times and dates). I was honored to be of part of the making of this documentary and the companion book that will be released in November. Items from my collection of Las Vegas memorabilia (some of which you can see online in the Vegas4Visitors Museum) are featured in both the TV and print version of the project.
By the way… no, I don’t get paid for either so this is purely an altruistic promotional push. The self-serving one will come in a couple of weeks when I start telling you about my upcoming guide book.
Anyway, the four-hour documentary spans the history of Las Vegas, from its early days as a railroad whistle stop through the boom of the Boulder Dam era into the Rat Pack days and the explosive growth of the ‘90s to current day. It focuses on the unconventional ways (hence the title) in which this town became what it is, manufacturing little more than the promise of instant fortunes or instant gratification rather than an actual product that you can hold in your hands.
The documentary features interviews of Steve and Elaine Wynn, media mogul (Las Vegas Sun) and casino entrepreneur (Green Valley Ranch) Brian Greenspun, and many others who helped shape the city into what it is today. It also profiles of ten modern day Las Vegas residents who in one way or another add to the fabric of Sin City.
And of course there’s all that wonderful archival footage, not just from Vegas4Visitors but from sources far and wide. You’ll see historical film and photos that you’ve never seen before, offering an unparalleled look at the city’s past.
For more information on the documentary, the companion book, and some really fun features like interactive maps, postcards, trivia, a Vegas timeline, a photo gallery, and more, visit the official “Las Vegas: An Unconventional History” website.

Amazing Johnathan hosts a Halloween treat
By Jerry Fink
The Amazing Johnathan really knows how to throw a party.
Body bags. Body parts. Live boa constrictors. Fake rats.
The always spooky magician may be at his best on Halloween.
Thursday night he partied with a hundred or so fans and peers at a warehouse where he stores his 14 classic automobiles.
The warehouse was dubbed Szeles & Sons Mortuary.
For the occasion he moved the cars and created a maze of terror which guests had to pass through just to get to the party, where you could dine on such delicacies as human brains (made from jello).
There were live actors in body bags, a carved-up living carcass from a surgery gone seriously wrong, a possessed baby that sprang up from the crib to surprise people passing into the room and a seriously demented mother asking people for help.
Spirits came out of walls to grab you.
The always politically incorrect Johnathan and his assistant Penny Wiggins (Psychic Tanya) brought their zaniness to the party.
As you exited the haunted house you found Johnathan sitting behind the wheel of his classic Ford Falcon, that bounced on hydraulics and flashed its lights as a bloody torso flew at you from a dark corner.
There were performances by go-go dancers and strippers; models carrying snakes and a mind reader.
At 1 a.m. there was a live freak show by cast members of the Jim Rose Circus — fire eaters and human pin cushions; a performer who hung various heavy objects from a nose piercing.
Among the guests were Monte Carlo magician Lance Burton, who recently was invited to perform on the FTD Float in the 117th Rose Bowl Parade (this year entitled “It’s Magical”).
Also, “An Evening at La Cage” star Frank Marino (who recently has become involved in a public spat with his producer Norbert Aleman). And Rio magicians Penn & Teller (Penn reportedly soon will have an hourlong talk show on KSFN 1140-AM).
“Thunder from Down Under” producer Adam Steck, hypnotist Anthony Cools (Paris Las Vegas), magician Nathan Burton (”Buck Wild” at the Sahara and “V, the Ultimate Variety Show” at the Aladdin) and cast members of Second City (at the Flamingo) also were among the guests.
Johnathan performs at 10 p.m. Fridays through Wednesdays in the Sahara’s Congo Room — where it’s Halloween year around.

With time, Delisco should be the real deal
By Jerry Fink
Maybe you saw Delisco earlier this year on the E! Entertainment reality TV series “The Entertainer,” hosted by Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton.
If you did, you are in the minority.
The series, a search for the next Las Vegas headliner, didn’t do well in the ratings. But a true entertainer — perhaps two — may have been discovered.
Delisco, a native of Florida, was the winner. The vocalist’s prize included a 17-week engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton. His performances are at 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, ending Nov. 29.
He shares the spotlight with the runner-up in the televised competition, comedian Dave Russo. Russo of Boston is Delisco’s 10-minute opening act.

THE STRIP: True Blue
Blue Man Group tweaks its successful show
By Martin Stein
Ensconced in its new home at the Venetian, the Blue Man Group offers a lot of its tried-and-true winning formula as well as some fresh tricks.
If you’ve been living in a cave on the Pakistani-Afghan frontier, here’s the rundown: Take three grown men, cover them in blue paint and then set them loose on stage with props that include the inventory from Sherwin-Williams, drums and PVC tubing, and Cap’n Crunch cereal and Twinkies.
Mute throughout the performance, the trio communicate easily with one another through subtle expressions and body language, their most common expression being a sense of wonderment at what they are doing. In the show’s opening sequence, two of the troupe pound some tall, interior-lit drums. Unremarkable until the third spills some vibrant paint on the surface. The result is a stunning yet simple display, as red and yellow erupts in glowing sprays.

Ceremonial Tree Lighting Event Provides Holiday Entertainment “On Ice”
Lake Las Vegas Resort welcomes the holiday season with an evening of cheerful festivities to commemorate the opening of MonteLago Village’s floating ice rink on Friday, November 18, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Celebrate the arrival of winter at Lake Las Vegas Resort with joyous activities to mark the official season opening of the one-of-a-kind floating ice rink. Beginning at 6 p.m., the critically acclaimed Helen Joy Choir will serenade guests with holiday song favorites, and precede a dazzling ice skating performance at 6:30 p.m. A grand tree lighting ceremony, led by local Fox 5 news anchors Ted Pretty and Heidi Hayes, will take place under a glittering dusting of “snow” at 7:15 p.m. and illuminate the resort with twinkling holiday lights. In support of the couple’s chosen charity, all proceeds from ice skating tickets on November 18, 2005, will be donated to the March of Dimes with a matching contribution from Lake Las Vegas Resort. All money raised will go towards lifesaving research for the more than 4,100 babies born prematurely in Nevada each year.
After the majestic tree lighting ceremony, guests are invited to mingle with Santa Claus and his elves— who will be on hand to listen to holiday wishes and pose for photos—or ice skate on the 40-foot by 70-foot floating winter spectacle. In operation from November 18, 2005, through February 14, 2006, the MonteLago Village Floating Ice Rink is open to the public daily at a cost of $12 per child and $15 per adult for an all-day pass. Times vary month to month.
Guests are invited to enjoy the tree-lighting festivities at no cost; however, those wishing to ice skate after the event may purchase tickets at the ice rink for a standard fee.

I personally think it is a mistake on Harrah’s part not to renew the Scintas and Clint Holmes. I have been going to Vegas for the last 11 years and have seen many, many shows. The Scintas is by far one of the best. What is Harrah’s thinking? It’s bad enough that their room rates have sky rocketed and their reward program has changed and now they want to get rid of some of the best talent on the strip! Hopefully the people in charge will see the big mistake they are making. Does anyone else feel this way?
How or where this site ever came up, but thanks
for your efforts. I enjoy seeing what is going on
in Las Vegas. Usually attend the National Finials
Rodeo, which is the only time each year that I am
in Las Vegas. Will not br attending the Rodeo this year, but sure enjoy your reporting. My source of whats going on in town, enjoy the news.
Thanks Again: Alan
Can’t believe Harrah’s is even thinking about not renewing Clint Holmes and the Scintas!!! Both shows are absolutely fabulous and will be “a hard act to follow”. Will be interesting to see what the replacements will be!!!
Love the newsletter! Can you install a prompt to a printer friendly version? When I print now, I have to change the format to landscape!
I believe it is printer friendly as many members have told me they print them out with no problems.
