STRIP INCIDENT : Suspect competent for trial.
Man accused of driving into crowd delusional, expert finds.

The man accused of driving a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians on the Strip, killing three, is legally competent, authorities said Wednesday.

Stephen Ressa, 27, appeared in the courtroom of Justice of the Peace Karen Bennett-Haron on Wednesday for a status check, and defense attorney Tim O’Brien of the Clark County public defender’s office said a psychiatrist has examined Ressa.

The psychiatrist determined Ressa is delusional, but he has been found to be legally competent, meaning Ressa understands the legal process and is able to help his attorneys.

NORM: Wayne Newton has holiday plans.

Wayne Newton will sleigh ‘em in his new show at the Flamingo.

No one’s confirming (or denying) my story earlier this month about Newton’s move to the Flamingo, but I’m told the master plan goes like this:

The announcement for a Nov. 24 soft opening will be made in early November, probably next week.

He will appear in a Christmas/holiday show during November and December, with a sleigh and penguins, similar to his Branson production.

His regular show will run from January to April, with a Harrah’s Treasure Hunt promotion concluding with a $1 million prize for the person who figures out the clues.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Producer takes rock band out of ‘Erocktica’ in revised show.

The producer of “Erocktica” says a lot of people misread the show title as “Erotica.” It won’t matter anymore, because the Rio show is reopening without the live rock band the title used to suggest.

In a move that’s fairly rare in casino shows, producer Greg Thompson pulled the topless show for an overhaul in late August, after six months. It is scheduled to reopen Friday without the four-piece rock band and with about half of its dance content changed.

“We knew going in we were bucking the odds a little bit” by using the band, Thompson says. “There was a chance we could do more numbers (in tickets sold) than the average late-night show.”

Hooters Job Fair

As you are aware, the San Remo Hotel & Casino will soon become Hooters Casino Hotel. To get ready for the scheduled February opening, Hooters is holding a job fair at the San Remo Nov. 8-9, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. On Tuesday, Nov. 8, they will be have auditions for the Hooters Girls positions, so if you’ve got a winning personality and a great body to go along with it, give it a shot. They also will take applications for food servers, cocktail servers, bartenders and table game dealers. On Wednesday, Nov. 9, they will be looking for people to fill all general positions throughout the property. Good luck.

Speaking of jobs, did you know that our hotel-casinos, just in Clark County (that’s Greater Las Vegas), employs 177,400. That’s 10,400 more than last year and it keeps on growing as more hotel-casinos open. And people wonder why we have such a strong economy here.
