BROADWAY WEST

The New York Times gave Broadway’s mass migration to Las Vegas a massive spread in Sunday’s edition.

Two stories and 13 photos filled almost three full pages of the Arts & Leisure section.

In one of the articles, headlined “Live on the Strip: Broadway’s Second City,” author Jesse Green suggested as many as a dozen more Broadway shows are on the way, including Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s “Movin’ Out” and the Tony award-winning “Wicked.”

It’s not just Broadway shows looking for a place to call home.

“We’re tired of running all over the world,” Flamingo headliner George Wallace told the Times’ Frank Bruni, who predicts the road weary will eventually turn Las Vegas into “a superstar colony.”

Vegas4Visitors 2005 Readers’ Poll Results: Buffet, Casino, Service, Rooms. By Rick Garman.

The 4th Annual Vegas4Visitors Readers’ Poll garnered thousands of votes from around the world, offering our readers a chance to vote on their favorites in more than a dozen categories. This week the results of the voting as our readers pick their favorite buffet and casino and choose which hotel they think offers the best rooms and service.

Best Buffet
#1 – The Buffet at Bellagio. Expensive but worth it. At least that seems to be the mantra from our readers as 12% of the votes went to this upscale all-you-can-eatery for an uncontested number one finish for the first time in the four years of this poll.

#2 – Aladdin Spice Market Buffet. The new owners of the Aladdin are starting the process of a top to bottom makeover of the property to turn it into Planet Hollywood. 11.5% of our readers’ votes in this category seem to be telling them to leave the buffet alone.

#3 – Tie! Paris Le Village Buffet and Rio Carnival World Buffet. Apparently people have gotten over their whole French-hating thing and cast 9.3% of their votes toward the whimsical buffet at Paris to put it into a tie with the recently remodeled (and now more expensive) Rio Carnival World Buffet. It’s worth noting that while a tie for third place is nothing to sneer at, the Rio buffet came in first place in this category for the last two years and in our first edition tied for number one with Bellagio. Why the downfall? You tell me.

#5 – Mirage Cravings Buffet. It’s impossible to tell whether voters were casting their ballots for the new Cravings buffet or in memory of the old one, but since Cravings has been around for about a year now we’re going to have to assume y’all have actually eaten there and like it as much as we do. 5.1% of the votes gave it fifth place.

Best Casino
#1 – MGM Grand. This is quite an upset in this category. The MGM Grand has always done well with our readers but has never come in first place so apparently the changes and remodeling done over the last year have been a hit with guests. With 6.3% of the vote, the biggest casino in Vegas is officially the grandest in our readers’ opinions.

#2 – Harrah’s. Harrah’s debuted in our Top 5 in last year’s poll and this year announces that it’s here to stay with a move up to second place with 5.9% of the vote.

#3 – Caesars Palace. This is another casino that has undergone some massive changes in the last year and apparently the people like them. The Roman opulence got 5.4% of the votes to come in third, up two spots from last year.

#4 – Bellagio. How the mighty have fallen. True, only 1.1% of the vote separated first and fourth (5.2%) but going from being number one for three years running to number four has gotta smart. Take solace, Bellagio fans – note the winner of the other three categories revealed this week.

#5 – New York-New York. The wild Big Apple spectacle that is NYNY garnered 4.7% of the vote for number five.

Best Service
#1 – Bellagio. I’m not even sure why we bother to continue having this category in the voting because Bellagio has dominated every year. With 18.7% of the votes it nearly tripled the ballots of its closest competitor.

#2 – Caesars Palace. It’s a virtual repeat of last year with Caesars Palace garnering a much lower vote percentage (6.8%) but still good for second place again this year.

#3 – The Mirage. Third place last year, third place this year (with 5.9% of the vote). You guys are reminding me of Emmy voters.

#4 – The Venetian. Anyone want to guess what hotel came in fourth place last year? Yes, the Venetian, although this year it got 5.5% of the vote compared to last year’s 5.8%.

#5 – Paris Las Vegas. What’s this? A new entry? Could it be? Yes! Paris Las Vegas kicked Mandalay Bay out of the Top 5 with 4.6% of the vote.

Best Rooms
#1 – Bellagio. Only a handful of votes separated the number one and two spots on the list but the 15.5% that Bellagio got was enough to put it into first place for the second year in a row.

#2 – The Venetian. They won the category easily in the first two years of this poll but have been sliding in popularity ever since. Still with 15.4% of the vote, more than double the third place finisher, its obvious that The Venetian still impresses with its sizeable rooms.

#3 – Rio Suites. Third place is nothing to sneer at, especially when you do it consistently year after year. With 7% of the vote the Rio Suites scores the bronze for their rooms.

#4 – Mandalay Bay. 5.2% of the votes went to the rooms at Mandalay Bay, another repeat of its finish from last year.

#5 – Wynn Las Vegas. Even though its only been open for a little more than four months, apparently enough of our readers were impressed by the offerings at Wynn to give it a Top 5 showing with 5.1% of the vote.

Updated Hotel Review: The Fremont Hotel by Rick Garman

The Fremont is a Downtown Las Vegas landmark, having been in operation for 50 years as of 2006. In a city that seems to delight in tearing down or remodeling its history, experiencing a bit of “old” Las Vegas is a welcome change from the occasionally over-processed palaces on The Strip. Located on The Fremont Street Experience, a dazzling light and sound show, The Fremont casino area is small by Strip standards (only 32,000-square-feet) but it is jammed with just about everything you’d want – a nice mix of slots (all recently upgraded to feature the latest ticket-in ticket-out technology), video poker, and table games with relatively low limits – yes, you can find $2 blackjack tables here.

As with most Downtown casinos, they’ve crammed a lot of stuff into a relatively small space so walkways are narrow and personal space is at a premium. Despite this they’ve done a great job keeping the place airy and bright so there is a very low claustrophobia level.

The Players Gold players’ club allows you to earn points at any of the affiliated hotels under the Boyd Gaming property including The Stardust, Sam’s Town, The California, and Main Street Station. Now that Boyd and Coast Casinos are merged into one company they may include Barbary Coast, Orleans, Suncoast, and South Coast in the future, under one umbrella program.

As with the casino, the rest of the hotel is small by comparison as well. There are only 447 rooms – many hotels on The Strip have 10 times that amount – but there are benefits to being in a hotel of this size. For instance you don’t have to don hiking boots and bring a bottle of water to make it from your room to the elevator. In fact, getting from your room to the front door or the valet parking can be done in a couple of minutes – something I defy you to do at one of the gigantic hotels.

The rooms themselves are also smaller than those of its Strip brethren but really, how much time are you planning on spending in the room anyway? The furnishings are clean and well-kept, with a standard room featuring a television with pay-per-view movies, a hair dryer, a safe, iron and board, and a data port on the phone (no high-speed Internet, sorry). Upgraded rooms come equipped with a coffee maker, and a small refrigerator.

Be aware that the bathrooms are tiny. To be fair it is no smaller than what you’d find at your local Motel 6, but you can forget about sharing it with your spouse. So take turns and relax – you’re on vacation.

In addition to the aforementioned full-service casino, the hotel has several restaurants including two Vegas4Visitors favorites – the Paradise Buffet and the Second Street Grille (see Dining section for reviews). A branch of the rib joint Tony Roma’s, a 24-hour café, and the peculiar Lanai Express round out the offerings. I say peculiar because it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a place that offers Chinese food and foot-long hot dogs side by side. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

That’s about it in terms of facilities. There is no pool or spa (most Downtown hotels don’t have them), no self-parking (valet only but you can get validation), no shopping mall (although there are a couple of basic shops), no showroom, no 24-hour room service, and no roller coasters, 3-D motion simulators, white tigers, or stunt shows. On the plus side you are literally steps away from a half-dozen other hotels so you can do a lot of casino hopping in a short amount of time and there is a free shuttle to sister property Sam’s Town over on Boulder Highway, from which you could catch a free shuttle to The Strip if you wanted.

Worth mentioning is the fact that although having the Fremont Street Experience so close is kind of cool, it can also be a bit distracting. Shows run every hour on the hour after dark so if you are in your room in the evening it’s a bit loud. In fact on one visit I sat in my room at midnight listening to the closing strains of the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere I just can’t think of one right now.

Of particular note is the incredibly friendly staff. Everyone I encountered – from the valet parking attendants to the cocktail waitresses to the dealers and beyond – was unbelievably personable. One lady at the front desk greeted everyone as if they were her grandchildren. It’s a lovely feeling and quite a welcome relief from the professionally brusque manner in which you are treated in most places in Las Vegas.

Cost is a big motivator here. You can often get a room here for as low as $40 a night, although it can spring up well above $100 for busy weekends and convention periods. Even so, you’ll probably be paying half what you would on the Strip and often even less.

Overall, I enjoyed The Fremont and while it may not be my first choice when I visit Vegas, it’s definitely on my list of recommended hotels.

Brett’s vegas Views

“Buck Wild” is a variety show with a country theme. The show has the winning traditional production elements: country music, a live band, gorgeous sexy dancers, featured singers and well establish variety acts like juggler Wally Eastwood.

The show’s highlight is the 11 year old child prodigy LD Miller. When you are privileged to witness a star in the making such as Miller, you experience show business electricity. Effortlessly playing the harmonica and singing, Miller displays talent way beyond his years and he’s the last act before the dance finale because he is such a strong onstage presence.

The show’s producer David Saxe, who also has the “V – The Ultimate Variety Show” at Desert Passage, is a show business veteran who knows how to package an upbeat show. Tickets are $49.95 and $59.95 plus tax, call 702-737-2515.

David Brenner, who stars in his own show at the Hilton, is creating a film about stand-up comedy that will begin shooting in New York City and Los Angeles in mid to late October and in Las Vegas in December or after the first of the new year. The film will include some of his stand-up performance as well as feature casino action, a restaurant, and a lot of hotel life. Brenner created, wrote and will star in the film along with a cast of major stars.

Delisco is making his debut at the Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret with a nine-piece band and two back-up singers in the Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret. Delisco, who was chosen “The Entertainer” on E! Entertainment Television’s “The Entertainer” that was taped at the Las Vegas Hilton, performs at 7 p.m. and shares the Shimmer Cabaret with comedian David Brenner, who appears at 9 p.m., and the Frankie Moreno Band. Delisco takes the stage Tuesday-Saturday and tickets are $29 plus tax and service charge.

For the first time, Las Vegas’ “What Happens Here Stays Here” has been nominated for “Advertising Week’s” prestigious “Slogan of the Year” award. Historic slogans such as “A Diamond is Forever” (DeBeers) and “They’re Grrrrrreat !” (Frosted Flakes) have been nominated along with newer work. Two winners from each category (icons and slogans) will be unveiled this week.

Old Las Vegas alive and well in solid ‘Viva!’
By Jerry Fink

If you’re a bargain shopper, you won’t find a better entertainment bargain in town than “Viva Las Vegas!” — a no-frills afternoon revue that features a cast of talented performers who work hard to give you more than your money’s worth.

Producer Dick Feeney came up with a winning formula that has worked well for 14 years, first at the now-defunct Sands (where it opened in April 1991) and since 1996 at the Stratosphere’s Theater of the Stars.

For $11.95 you get an abundance of comedy, magic, singing and sexy dancing showgirls.

OK, maybe the formula is as old as Vegas, but Feeney and the Stratosphere have continued to use it to the satisfaction of fans while other hotels focus on multimillion-dollar extravaganzas.

‘Crazy’ Like a Fox: Mastermind of Riviera production shows boasts a storied past.
By Jerry Fink

You may not recognize the name Norbert Aleman.

But you probably are familiar with two long-running shows he produces at the Riviera: “Crazy Girls” (18 years) and “An Evening at La Cage” (20 years).

And, unless you are blind, you certainly have seen his famous “No Ifs, Ands or …” ad that adorns a fleet of taxicabs, showing off the shapely derrieres of seven showgirls.

The photo was Aleman’s brainchild. When it first appeared on the marketing scene it raised a lot of eyebrows in a town that takes pride in its jaded approach to the sexual side of show business especially the backside.

Walled in
By:Jerry Fink

Stephen Sorrentino is among the host of performers in Las Vegas who believe four-walling is anathema to entertainment in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

The 39-year-old native of Long Island, N.Y., says casinos in old Las Vegas had it right — pay the entertainers to entertain, don’t collect rent from them.

“Receiving an actual check at the end of the week instead of room rent is a wonderful concept,” said Sorrentino, one of the great Elton John impersonators and an all-around performer.

Sorrentino had a brief encounter with four-walling a couple of years ago when he rented space at the Riviera’s Le Bistro Theatre.

“I’m a survivor of the Riviera,” he said. “I had a hit show — one of the highest-rated shows at the Riviera, but I still lost an incredible amount of money.

“By the time you pay your room rent and advertising and commission to ticket brokers — by the end of the day if you come out even you’re ahead.”

Sorrentino, for one, is elated by the recent purchase of Caesars Palace and other properties by Harrah’s.

“Harrah’s theory of entertainment is what Las Vegas was built on,” he said. “The idea is that good entertainment brings people; people bring in gambling revenue and that revenue pays for the hotel and creates profits.”

He notes that Harrah’s has headliners, such as Clint Holmes at Harrah’s and the Scintas at the Rio (another one of the company’s vast holdings).

Maybe one day Sorrentino will be one of the headliners, if not at Harrah’s then at another Vegas property.

“I’m waiting in the wings,” he said.

While he is waiting, he isn’t idle.

Sorrentino often performs in Atlantic City at the Tropicana — his next engagement there is in September and October.

He is busy editing an hour-long special taped at one of his Atlantic City performances, which will air on KVTE Channel 35 in the summer.

He also performs corporate gigs and he opens for other entertainers, including Dana Carvey.

“I used to open for Dennis Miller, but he won’t hire me anymore,” Sorrentino said. “He told me I was too good to be an opening act.”

Whatever he does, Sorrentino says he won’t four-wall.

And when he performs he puts on a full production — 10 dancers and a 10-piece orchestra.

“That’s what I have in Atlantic City, and that’s the only way that I will come back to the Strip,” Sorrentino said.

Celine Dion stirs the crowd in A New Day
By:Michael Berg

Celine Dion
Where: Caesars Palace
When: 8:30 p.m. Wed.-Sun.
Cost: $115.00 – $252.50
Info: (702) 992-4852 or (877) 983-4279

A world-famous star in the prime of her career, celine dion left behind the touring grind inherent in the music business to build an incredible concert experience in Las Vegas that would serve as a destination for millions of fans. It has allowed for a show unlike any other, with a grand scale and intricate detail that would be impossible to duplicate on the road. Since opening in March 2003, sellout after sellout soundly proves the bold experiment to be a resounding success.

In a set born from the surreal imagination of former Cirque du Soleil producer Franco Dragone, characters, landscapes and images spring to life onstage: In this world, musical instruments float through the sky, and the moon swings so close you can almost touch it. However, the action never overpowers the central focus of the performance—21 masterful numbers by Dion. Fans of the Grammy-winning singer will not be disappointed, as most of the hits are here: “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now,” “I Drove All Night,” “Because You Loved Me,” and “My Heart Will Go On,” among others.

But even better than the mind-blowing scenery, the multitude of 48 talented dancers, and the crisp live sound of the musicians, are the simple heartfelt moments of the Quebec-born chanteuse herself.

In Jubilee!, plumes are a showgirl’s best friend
By: Michael Paskevich

Jubilee!
Where: Bally’s
When: 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. Sat.-Thurs.
Cost: $55 – $69
Info: (702) 992-7970 or (866) 80-SHOWS

There’s no such thing as a lightweight feather in Jubilee!, the vintage Las Vegas spectacle that’s entertained millions since its 1981 debut at Bally’s.

Indeed, there’s a certain weight to every single plume—and we’re talking countless thousands of them—that nest in elaborate headdresses and stylized hats worn by the production’s trademark showgirls. Others roost in wrap-around boas or aptly named “buttpacks,” and each feather becomes part of the unique tapestry that makes Jubilee! a stage spectacular that could never be duplicated.

“It’s definitely an art, one that I think compares to flower arranging,” said wardrobe manager Donna London of the never-ending task of maintaining, restoring and eventually replacing the show’s calling-card feathers. “It takes a lot of time, skill and patience to keep them looking their best under the bright stage lights.”

Fortunately, London has costume director Marios Ignadiou on hand to help the show contend in an ongoing battle against natural elements, backstage mishaps and general wear and tear. Those factors are among the ever-present enemies of the fragile feathers.

Ignadiou and his assistants keep exacting eyes on more than 3,000 costume pieces that are maintained for potential use in Jubilee!, a multi-act extravaganza that re-enacts everything from the ancient fable of Samson and Delilah to World War I and the sinking of the Titanic. On a given night, a good portion of the current cast of 102 performers makes up to eight rapid costume changes.

And, of course, many of those costumes feature feathers in the tradition of famed French dancehall shows that influenced producer Donn Arden. He enlisted noted costume designers Bob Mackie and Peter Menefee to create costumes that recalled the early 1900s, a time when feathered hats and flowing boas were considered high-fashion staples. The two designers also forged fresh and more modern designs that helped Jubilee! become a classic Vegas extravaganza.

Both London and Ignadiou spend ample time on the other side of the curtain to get audience views of the costumes, thus helping them assess when it’s time to replace feathers that are past their prime. Each decision to do so sets in motion a complex process that requires time, craftsmanship and money.

“A single feather can cost as much as $4,” said London, “And one hat may require more than a hundred of them. So the costs can add up quickly.”

Jubilee!, which recently underwent a multimillion dollar facelift, is expected to carry its distinction of a unique feathered wardrobe for countless years to come.

NORM: Britney may get full-time LV gig.

Mommy-to-be Britney Spears may be expecting a long-term Las Vegas engagement.

She’s embracing the idea of becoming a resident headliner and nontouring mom, a la Celine Dion, according to Las Vegas deal maker Jack Wishna, who met with her recently.

“The parties are working on a deal that could bring Britney in her own show in Las Vegas by 2007-2008,” Wishna said Saturday by e-mail.

Wishna did not identify the property he’s negotiating for, other than saying it is not Phil Ruffin’s New Frontier or Donald Trump’s residential tower. Wishna, who put together the Ruffin-Trump deal, said he’s representing a “major Strip property.”

He said he’s also been discussing a deal that would bring Madonna to the same property, for several weeks at a time.

Big cat attack

A fatal tiger attack in Kansas has tie-in issues with Las Vegas.

Stardust big cat headliner Rick Thomas has obtained animals from the owner of the Lost Creek Animal sanctuary near Mound Valley, Kan., where a 17-year-old girl was killed while posing for a photo with a Siberian tiger.

“We have relations with them, but it wasn’t my cat,” Thomas said Saturday, between his matinee shows.

Thomas currently has a white tiger in his big cat lineup that he purchased from Doug Billingsly, who opened the 80-acre Kansas sanctuary in 1994 and supplies cats for entertainment acts.

The death of Haley Hilderbrand of Altamont, Kan., reopened the debate over safety concerns involving live animal shows and human contact at sanctuaries.

Thomas said his show has never been safer since the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered added cautionary measures after Roy Horn’s near-fatal incident at The Mirage almost two years ago. Thomas’ cats are attached to a cable system designed to prevent them from going into the audience.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Connection to Broadway tough to call.
Avenue Q” was set to open its doors to paying customers Saturday night, and soon we may have a better idea how this whole Broadway-to-Vegas thing is panning out.

Or not.

Honestly, the whole Broadway trend has been a lot tougher to get a grip on than the national publications would suggest.

If you remember your high school science, the problem is the lack of a control group. The marketing of Britney Spears aside, entertainment has never been an exact science. And a recap of Broadway-style musicals in Las Vegas suggests each title has too many of its own issues for a collective picture to become clear:

  3. Hi, do you have an update on the “Death on the strip” article? we were there when this happened, and saw the after-math of it. Was there another death? Do they know WHY this man chose to injure those people? was he trying to commit sucicide?

  4. Hi Steve, are you sending out reminders or anything telling us when the new newsletter is available? I tend to forget when it comes out, and thought a reminder would be great… otherwise when does it “actually” come out?

  5. this newsletter was exceptional I really like the article on the Freemont tha was great – hope do some more properties that was great. Enjoy the newsletter a lot and they are very helpful. bj

Now that Boyd and Coast Casinos are merged into one company they may include Barbary Coast, Orleans, Suncoast, and South Coast in the future, under one umbrella program. Just wanted you to know that the points are not a joint venture. To get comped for a meal, etc., you had to have earned the points at the casino you want the comp. The only benefit to this “umbrella”, that I could figure out, is you won’t have to carry the extra casino cards. I played at Main Street, California, Vegas Club and the Freemont and was told, I didn’t have enough comps at the Freemont to get a comped meal, but to go back to one of the other’s to see if I did. I wasn’t too happy and thought what’s the point of having the “umbrella” effect. Just my humble opinion. Love your new website!

  9. CONGRATULATIONS – Just received new format … looks very very good!
