Gildah, the featured elephant in Siegfried & Roy’s show for two-plus decades, died Wednesday night at the duo’s Secret Garden at The Mirage. A 4-ton ceremonial Thai elephant, she celebrated her 57th birthday on May 4 by chowing down on a 4-foot-high cake made of carrots and fruit with a straw-filled center and topped with multicolored Cool Whip. A former star of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, she joined Siegfried & Roy 25 years ago. In a press release, Siegfried & Roy said, “In celebration of her life, we would ask that donations be made to the American Red Cross in support of animal rescue for those animals affected by Hurricane Katrina.”

The Las Vegas Hilton has modified its plans for Delisco, the entertainer owed a headlining engagement at the casino after winning the E! reality series “The Entertainer.” It sounds like the poor guy has more of a fighting chance now. Instead of throwing him into the big showroom on those wonderful nights of Sundays through Tuesdays, they’ve moved him into the club-sized venue, Shimmer Cabaret, where David Brenner performs.
Delisco also gets to perform a five-night stretch, Tuesdays through Saturdays, albeit in an early 7 p.m. time slot. The ticket price still won’t top $35 with taxes. The singer originally was scheduled to open last Sunday. His new opening night is next Tuesday.

NORM: Yen for fine steak? Dish out top dollar.
Soaring gasoline prices? That’s small potatoes compared to the elite steaks in Las Vegas.
Along Las Vegas Boulevard and off the Strip, the $20-something steak has gone the way of the $1.99 buffet.
A survey of top eateries reveals the most expensive steaks this side of New York City, if not even higher than there.
Granted, many of the jaw-dropping prices are the result of more Kobe beef being served. Take Shintaro, the Japanese eatery at Bellagio, where the 10-ounce Washugyu Kobe tenderloin is going for $190. Shintaro’s 12-ounce sirloin commands $170.
Over at Bradley Ogden, the high-end restaurant at Caesars Palace, the 8-ounce Kobe steak goes for $175.
Also cracking the $100 barrier: Craftsteak at the MGM Grand, with a 10-ounce Kobe filet mignon price at $100. On the cusp: a 14-ounce Kobe ribeye for $98.
So much U.S. beef has topped the $50-a-steak mark that we couldn’t count them. Among the highest: Michael’s at the Barbary Coast offers a 20-ounce New York prime aged Black Angus sirloin for $75, and filet mignon for $68.
Yes, it’s outrageous, agrees Russell Anzevino, assistant maitre d’ at Michael’s, “but it’s got to do with the availability of prime beef. In the days of the $20 steak, prime beef was plentiful. Now one percent of beef is deemed prime now.”
Prime beef, he said, “is deemed just like a vintage wine. It goes through an auction. It’s very rare, almost like diamonds.”

Celine Dion will rush from her show to Andre Agassi’s annual benefit on Saturday.
By Mike Weatherford.
Dion will join the Agassi benefit’s most crowded roster to date: Mary J. Blige, Duran Duran, Earth, Wind & Fire, Glenn Frey, George Lopez, Robin Williams and at least one unannounced surprise guest. Some of the performers also will feature backing by music producer David Foster and an orchestra.
“It’s not about being nice or generous,” Dion said by telephone recently. “I think it’s — how do we say it? — a responsibility. I don’t think it’s given to everyone to give a million dollars or build schools for children,” as Agassi has with his charter school, the Andre Agassi Preparatory Academy. “But if we are given the opportunity, it’s so rewarding to be able to make a difference.”
Dion’s participation also makes her the rare Las Vegas-based performer at the benefit. She first sang at a “Grand Slam” in 1997, long before “A New Day” debuted in March 2003. Since then, the Canadian superstar has put to rest the notion that she would be a carpetbagger who would “suck up all the oxygen and then fly away,” as one unnamed local headliner told Newsweek at the time.
what: Grand Slam for Children
when: 8:30 p.m. (approximate after auction) Saturday

SHOW REVIEW: Zumanity by Mike Weatherford.
People always ask, “Why so many Cirque du Soleils? Why are they so successful in Las Vegas?”
Here’s one answer: Failure is not an option.
Unlike much of the competition, Cirque has deep pockets, a patient corporate partner in MGM Mirage and custom-built theaters that discourage drastic moves. After the company gutted the general-use theater at New York-New York to install the decadently curvaceous Zumanity Theatre, I would always tell people, “There will be a show called ‘Zumanity’ at New York-New York, and it will be a hit, even if they have a trained seal act onstage.”
It never came to that. But a recent party to mark the start of the revue’s third year also showed off the continued tinkering with a title that once threatened to snap Cirque’s winning streak.

Bellagio is favorite Vegas resort, visitor survey shows.
A new independent tourism survey says Bellagio is the favorite casino resort in Las Vegas.
And, of visitors who are members of a frequent-player loyalty program, most have an MGM Mirage Players Club card.
The survey, released today by New York-based Majestic Research casinos and leisure analyst Matthew Jacob, also said that while Las Vegas loads up on a variety of entertainment, dining and shopping alternatives, casinos are still the primary lure to the city.
Jacob said he wasn’t surprised by most of the results, since he has seen other surveys about Las Vegas visitation.

Time constraints don’t help ‘We Will Rock You’
By Jerry Fink
Although it is by no means a shadow of its former self, “We Will Rock You” lost some of its charm and meaning when writer Ben Elton whacked 30 minute off the two-hour production, chopping it down to fit the standard Vegas format of 90 minutes.
It has been said that the decision for the incision by the author’s scalpel was made by Harrah’s executives after Paris Las Vegas became part of the Harrah’s family.
Perhaps they felt the operation was necessary for the survival of the show, that the two-hour length was not drawing enough fans.
Or perhaps they were merely looking at the bottom line — get the fans out of the theater as quickly as possible so they can spend more money in the casino or the restaurants.

Columnist Jerry Fink: Tranz embraces brand X
Chances are, you aren’t going to see local hypnotist Justin Tranz in his reality TV show, “Extreme Truth.”
It airs at 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Sundays on the Playboy Channel.
The channel is not, shall we say, mainstream entertainment.
“X-rated,” Tranz said. “Yes. It’s X-rated.”
The show’s premise is for Tranz to hypnotize a couple who are in a committed relationship (married or dating) and to get them to tell secrets, reveal fantasies or actual desires.
“Playboy re-creates the fantasies with naked actors,” Tranz said. “But the couples I work with are real. Nothing is set up. What you see is what you get.”

Magic rocks
Greg Thompson attempted to combine a rock concert with a topless show in the production “Erocktica” at the Rio.
Now Curtis Adams is trying a similar tact, combining a rock concert atmosphere with a magic show in “Adrenaline: Magic that Rocks.”
“Erocktica” recently closed for a couple of months for some serious tweaking.
Here’s hoping Adams has better luck.
The 22-year-old magician begins a six-month engagement at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Plaza aimed at the younger fans.
Adams, a native of Long Beach, Calif., began performing professionally for birthday parties at the age of 10. At 11 he began performing at restaurants, and by the time he was 13 he had created his own production company, M.O.C.A. Productions.
At 17 he teamed with creative director Don Wayne, who has created material for David Copperfield’s TV specials as well as his live tours — including such tricks as Copperfield’s disappearance of the Statue of Liberty, walking through the Great Wall of China, as well as flying and vanishing the Orient Express.

Columnist Jerry Fink: New adult club Scores at Jaguars’ old location.
Can a Jaguar change its spots?
Maybe — at least it can change its owner, and its name.
The former Jaguars strip club, 3355 Procyon St., at Desert Inn Road, was sold by Jack Galardi a few months back to Dennis DeGori.
The club was one of three formerly owned by Galardi’s son Michael Galardi that were raided by the FBI in May 2003 as part of an investigation into an alleged bribery scheme involving four former Clark County commissioners.
The younger Galardi has pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He turned the club over to his father, who sold the club to DeGori.

Sin City Brewing Company will follow. It is the company’s first Las Vegas-based microbrewery. These excellent beers (the light beer is the best light brew I’ve ever tasted) can be sampled at Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar in Mandalay Place. Sin City owner/brewmaster Richard Johnson was previously the longtime Gordon Biersch Director of Brewing Operations. Sin City beers are brewed and distributed exclusively in Las Vegas.

NORM: Venetian doesn’t know how to Carey.
Mariah Carey was at her diva best for the opening of TAO, The Venetian’s new nightclub.
She not only insisted on the best room at The Venetian, but she wanted $25,000 to walk the red carpet for TAO’s grand opening Saturday night.
“She demanded blacked-out windows, the presidential suite, etcetera,” said one of two moles. She had to settle for a penthouse.
Another request, said a second spy: She wanted the butlers and security to lower their heads in her presence.
When she didn’t get the $25,000, she didn’t show up for what many local scenesters said was one of the city’s most star-studded openings.
The 50-some celebs on hand included cast members from NBC’s “Las Vegas,” Chelsea Clinton and Wilmer Valderrama of “That ’70s Show,” still clad in the tuxedo he wore to Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s wedding earlier in the evening in Los Angeles.
Paris Hilton was there with her parents, Rick and Kathy Hilton, and sister Nicky.
On Friday, Carey, Usher, Nelly, Ashanti and Janet Jackson turned Jermaine Dupri’s 33rd birthday party into an impromptu concert. At one point the recording artists stood on couches to sing happy birthday to the record producer.
Other attendees at the TAO opening: Oscar winner Adrien Brody, Daryl Hannah, Anthony Kiedis, Shannon Elizabeth, JC Chasez, David Hasselhoff, Steve Wynn, Anastasia, Drea DeMateo, Eve, Tara Reid and socialites Alex and Alexandra von Furstenberg, Marcus Allen, Eliza Dushku and Brent Bolthouse.

SHOOTING STARS: Cable network visits Binion case.
By Carol Cling
Gambling heir Ted Binion has been dead for seven years. But interest in his demise lives on — at least on TV.
The latest case in point: an episode of the Discovery Channel documentary series “True Crime Scene,” which is scheduled to begin a six-day location visit Friday.
The forensic science program, from Toronto-based NextFilm Productions, will conduct interviews and shoot Vegas views for the episode, according to associate producer Vanessa Hill.
Binion, son of Horseshoe founder Benny Binion, was found dead at his home Sept. 17, 1998. Live-in girlfriend Sandra Murphy and her secret lover, Rick Tabish, were found guilty of Binion’s murder in 2000; three years later, their convictions were overturned.
During last year’s retrial, the two were acquitted on murder charges, but convicted of the theft of $8 million in silver from an underground Pahrump vault two days after Binion’s death.

DEATH ON THE STRIP: Car plows into crowd.
car jumped a curb and plowed into a group of pedestrians on the Strip Tuesday, killing one and injuring 13 in what Las Vegas police said was an intentional act.
“He just drove onto a wide section of the sidewalk and took out all those people,” Sheriff Bill Young said. “He is a bad guy, and it looks like it may have been intentional. … All I know is that he stole his mother’s car and that he had had a bad day at drug court.”
The maroon Buick LeSabre was headed north on Las Vegas Boulevard about 5:15 p.m. when it veered onto the sidewalk in front of Bally’s, just south of Flamingo Road.

Word getting out on New Frontier
Phil Ruffin’s plans for the New Frontier site have been a well-kept secret — until now. The announcement, I’m told, is still two months away, but the word’s getting out.
For starters, I hear the tentative new name is Mondo and the hotel-casino will have 2,000 rooms and 750 suites.
Remember that massive Ferris wheel that was to be part of the Rio’s expansion? Someone who saw the blueprints says the Mondo project, if that’s the eventual name, will feature a Ferris wheel.
A spy says look for the New Frontier demolition to begin in late spring and construction a few months later.
