Everything Las Vegas Issue # 529

Please note that my sponsor Hunter and I have set the date of October 1st as the date that the www.everythinglv.com website will be the official site where the newsletter will be posted. There will be no more email newsletters. All members will get an email when something new is posted to the site. This notification system has been welcomed by almost all of the members.

If you haven’t checked out the website, I suggest you do. You will find some very nice features there. This newsletter will also be posted there.

Coming soon will be the public forum for the Members Need Help portion of the newsletter. This has been the most requested feature for the new website. What this feature will do is when a person posts a question, ALL members will be able to read all the responses that the person gets.

I am also thinking about adding at least one restaurant review per newsletter when we move over to the website posting. This would eliminate the Dining Issue entirely. The other option would be to expand the Dinning Issue as there is more room for articles at the website than in an AOL email format.

Please post your thoughts in the COMMENT link for this issue.

I also would like your comments about this:
You will notice in this issue, I did not put any lines (——–)to separate the articles. Does it make the flow of the articles better?

This newsletter will soon be posted at the www.everythinglv.com website.

I will be sending out a Members Corner newsletter tomorrow.

I found a pair of old Sahara Dice with a building on it.
On each pair of dice also has “Paradise 55″.
Do you have any information on the term ‘Paradise 55″ which relates to the
Sahara Hotel? The Sahara Dice are from the early 1950’s.

Where do I find all the coupons for Las Vegas?
Respond to: rollingbonz3344@comcast.net

My wife and I are taking our three sons and our daughter in law to Vegas in December or January. Our oldest is 27 and a prior Marine and has been there several times. In fact, he was stationed at Indian Springs, just north of Vegas one summer. The youngest son has just turned 21 and that’s what we were waiting for. The middle son is 25 and his wife is 22. My wife and I couldn’t think of a better Christmas present than to take the family to Vegas. Along with the information I’ve gleaned from your newsletters (I save them all), I was hoping your readers could guide us to the best places to stay, places with the best (and easiest) comps, coupons, free show tickets, etc. We will be on a tight budget, and all the money saved from meals, shows, and lodging can go toward gambling. My wife and I have stayed downtown and on the strip. We seem to like downtown best - everything is right there. I wouldn’t mind trying the Boulder strip, Sam’s town, Boulder station, etc. Also, where is the best place to rent a car? Previously, we have driven, so a car wasn’t necessary. I would like to drive again, but my wife says no. Please ask your readers for help. bstegall@yahoo.com

I have a question about all this controversy about Harrahs. My sister, my friend and I all get your newsletter and read it religiously and none of us can remember reading about Harrahs and their new 6 month “use it or lose it” rule regarding comp points. I just got back from a trip to Harrahs Atlantic City and received my usual postcard telling me how much cashback and comp points I earned. In the cashback block, it said I had until November, 2005 (3 months from last trip) to use them and in the box with my comp total, it specifically says “Use them. Save them. The choice is yours.” To me, that means I could save them for as long as I wanted (which I try to do to save up the points that I accumulate in Atlantic City to use during one of my trips to Las Vegas during the year). Are the rules for Harrahs in AC different from the rules in Las Vegas? I would think not, but we would just like to be clear.

Now that the Gold Star half price promo has ended, has anyone seen We Will Rock You tickets at the 1/2 price ticket outlets? Has anyone purchased a Saturday matinee ticket for 1/2 price ($30 or less?) We’re going in September and hope to see this show, but would like to find the discount tickets if they are available. We will still of course go see this because of the rave reviews but are still hoping to find a discount since we’re buying 4 tickets. Thanks lhood@iastate.edu

It is a locals place and the food has always been wonderful, the service is great, the people are polite and friendly… and the prices are reasonable. WE go at least twice in the week we are there.

What Type Of Slot Player Are You by Bill Burton

Slot players are not that much different from other types of investors. Where ever there is money involved people tend to fall into general categories based on their risk tolerance. I recently attended a seminar given by the company that manages my 401K retirement plan. The meeting started with all of us filling out a questionnaire that would help determine the type of investors we
were.

The questions were designed to give us an insight into how much “risk” we could handle as well as how much money we anticipated we would need for retirement. With this information recommendations could be made about the types of investments that were best suited for us.

`LA CAGE’ CELEBRATES TWO DECADES OF IMPERSONATING THE STARS.

“Crazy Girls” and “An Evening at La Cage”
Adds up to 38 Years at the Riviera

Norbert Aleman’s introduction to the world of show business began as a
bodyguard for French singing sensation and rock ‘n’ roll star Johnny Hallyday
during the ‘60s in Paris. Later he would come to manage and produce Hallyday’s
show. Hallyday was referred to as the Elvis of France. Having served in the
highly disciplined French Foreign Legion and later as a mercenary in Algeria and
other parts of Africa he was perfect to look-out for the well-being of the
French superstar.

The show business hook was in. From those years on, he knew what he wanted in
life and nothing would deter him from it. What was very hard work would
become his legacy and enjoyment later.

Ironically, he was born in Morocco during the ‘40s when American troops were
landing in the French colony for WWII. After Morocco gained their
independence, he immigrated to France.

During the ‘60s he became a stuntman and an actor working in films. He
worked with Sergio Leone (creator of the spaghetti westerns) and Terrence Young.
Leone also adapted a samurai film “Yojimbo” into “A Fistful of Dollars”
making an unknown Clint Eastwood into a star. Young was a director-writer-actor
playing “Dr. No” making his mark on film history with many films including “The
Valachi Papers.” Norbert has appeared in 25 movies that were filmed
throughout Europe.

The progression towards eventual international fame as a behind-the-scenes
show business mogul was both consistent and steady as he worked nonstop. He
became a producer and manager of future French stars such as Michael Sardou,
David Winter, Richard Anthony and many more selling over 50 million albums in
Europe while promoting tours in Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe.

In the late ‘70s, Hollywood was calling his name, so he moved to Laurel
Canyon in 1979 when tragedy struck and a fire destroyed his house just after he
married and got his first TV commercial. The tragic loss changed his life but he
sucked it up and moved to Las Vegas where he produced the first
African-American Beauty Pageant called “Miss Galaxy.” He began producing fashion shows.

In the early ‘80s, he was approached by the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City
to produce shows. He did a series of revues: “Can Can,” “Concert on the
Beach,” “Hooked on Classics,” “Big Band” and headliners making a huge impact on
the casino business. In 1984, he produced “La Cage” at Bally’s Park Place
in Atlantic City and the show ran for 10 years. He took the new East Coast
gambling mecca by storm with 10 major shows for Trump Castle. He also became the
only producer during that time to have four shows running simultaneously in
Atlantic City. This was all meant to be.

However, he chose to be a resident of Las Vegas so that he could concentrate
on his shows on The Strip. “An Evening at La Cage” opened in 1985 and the
controversial “Crazy Girls” was soon to become “Las Vegas’ Sexiest Topless Revue
” leaving its mark on Las Vegas entertainment history. When the politicos
wanted Las Vegas to change into a family city, they tried to kill off his show
by banning his award-winning advertising. The heat was on and the ADDY Award
winning advertising campaign showed what Norbert thought of their ideas when the
“Crazy Girls” butts were aimed at Las Vegas City Hall creating the most
controversy in Las Vegas’ showbiz history. The media frenzy had erupted and the
people of Las Vegas supported him. His independent thinking style helped show
the corporate types the reason Las Vegas has been so successful is because it
was a destination for everybody. The Riviera Hotel & Casino has survived the
years with his shows being their backbone.

Once again, Norbert would push the envelope by producing “The World’s Most
Beautiful Transsexual Pageant.” This pageant was on Howard Stern’s morning
radio show and became the biggest splash since the “Crazy Girls” award-winning
billboard and statue. In 2004, he produced the pageant which was filmed as “
Trantasia” for television and movies. It will be airing on a major cable TV
station soon and debut at the Venice Film Festival. His latest project is
re-incarnating the “Lido.”

He is to Las Vegas what David Merrick was to Broadway. The controversial
Merrick was known as “The Abominable Showman” for his publicity campaigns and
creative ideas in the late 20th century.

Aleman became the first Las Vegas producer to have his shows copied. With “
Crazy Girls” there have been a dozen knock-offs that were for the most part
failures not achieving the artistic creativity of the original which opened in
September of 1987. “La Cage” has been copied nationally and met the same fate
as “Crazy Girls’” with imitations popping up nationally. “La Cage” is the
best show of its kind in the world. The “NO, IFs and or…” bronze life-cast
statue attached to the façade of the Riviera’s Casino has produced more smiles and
laughs than all of the comedians who perform in Las Vegas. It has achieved a
reputation that if you rub the bronze butts your wishes will come true and
good fortune will permeate your life like the Fat Buddha in Japan. It’s won
awards and has become a Las Vegas landmark. The world’s largest life-cast statue
has been touched and seen by millions. The 11’ by 6’ art was debuted on May
13, 1997.

“Crazy Girls” has been running for 18 years around the U.S.A. on TV shows.
They’ve appeared on “Blind Date,” “Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” “Wild in
Sin City” on E!,” “Two for Las Vegas” on The Travel Channel,” Germany’s “Star
Search,” “Goin’ Deep” on FOX Sports, MSNBC’s “Special Edition,” “
Nosolomusica” in Spain, “The Late, Late Show,” Globe Magazine, The National
Enquirer, “Livin’s Large,” “Aqui de Hora” on Univision, “Hard Copy,” “Showgirls
in the Desert” for Discovery Channel,” “Showtime Vegas” on The Travel
Channel, “A Current Affair,” “Vegas Showgirls” on E!, “Taxicab Confessions,” “
Vegas Nights” on Discovery Channel, “The Pet Psychic” on Animal Planet, “The
Lucky Tour Show” on Japan TV, “The National Enquirer” TV show, “FOX Magazine,”
“Vegas Life,” “Only in Vegas,” “Showgirl Diaries,” “After Dark Las Vegas”
& VH-1.

Over 40 members of “La Cage” were honored over the years – the renowned show
ran for 12 consecutive years in Atlantic City and 20 years at the Riviera
Hotel & Casino on The Las Vegas Strip. Over the years “La Cage” has garnered
attention from the entertainment critics being awarded “Best Show,” “Best
Costumes,” “Best Producers,” “Best Specialty Show” and most recently won “Best
Impersonator Show” two years in a row in Las Vegas’ “Best of the the R-J.”
The current mind-blowing performers are: Jimmy Emerson as “Tammy Spraynette and “
Madonna’s Bigger Sister,” Brent Allen as Bette Midler and Judy Garland,
Sammy Gonzales as Liza Minnelli, Kenneth Blake as Madonna and Dolly Parton, Steven
Wayne as Cher and Celine Dion, Chris Woods as Diana Ross and Whitney Houston,
Jonathan Kay as Jennifer Lopez, Derrick Barrick as Britney Spears, Ryan Zink
as J.Lopez and Ryan Ziknk as Reba McEntire. “La Cage” appeals to adults over
30.

Over his lengthy career in show business, he has produced shows in China,
Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, France, Monte Carlo, Spain, Italy and Russia. He’s
received the key to the City of Las Vegas for his successes with “Crazy Girls”
and “La Cage.” In association with Global Media he will soon launch the
first Gambling TV Cable Network in Las Vegas. Creating is clearly a labor of
love.

The best is yet to come for Norbert Aleman!

The Tropicana’s very own Dirk Arthur lives up to his “extreme” reputation in the most outrageous ways a Las Vegas magic show could dream: big cats, helicopters, trains, and heart pumping theatrical effects. Dirk Arthur has added some extra quality ingredients to the already renowned mind-boggling illusions.
His fast paced show is also capable of reminding his audience of the mystery of magic through timeless, classic tricks and humor suitable for all ages. In addition viewers get a sneak peek into the humanitarian side of Dirk Arthur- It looks as though his cats reserve the right to upstage anyone.

Dirk arrives on stage in a less than conventional fashion for the opening act- fabricated from thin air in a smoking glass chamber. One of his Bengal Tigers is introduced early for an act called “Stripes” where the Tiger’s stripes are removed. Dirk has the honor of making over his Tiger but only after it is practiced on the outfit of one of his dancers (because this just certainly isn’t
Las Vegas without beautiful dancing girls in feline outfits). Audience members are not only floored by the illusion itself and it’s majestic stars, but by Dirk’s fun filled fact stating these animals can carry 3 times their weight up a tree.

Dirk takes a break from his “wild” side for some old school audience
participation card tricks. “The spirit of Houdini” involves absurdity and awe through the use of Houdini’s dentures. A card is picked and the magic chops reveal to the audience the selected card in a most outrageous and entertaining way. (Houdini is one of Dirk Arthur’s roll models and his spirit is brought back again
later in the show for an escape bit involving a straight jacket, chains, and an industrial drill as tall as the Tiffany showroom moving straight down for Dirk. Hopefully his studies on Houdini were diligent.) However, before the audience is even able to finish clapping for this cute number, Dirk makes a Robinson Helicopter appear from who knows where and everyone’s heart rate is back up
to maximum beats per minute. 007, eat your heart out.

Nothing says magic like dismembering beautiful women. Dirk takes the old knife to a box trick to a whole new level of disbelief. Girls dance through the ages in flapper dresses and poodle skirts to a sad fate of losing at least their legs. The only thing worse than losing the lower half of your body, would be having yours switched with someone else. Dirk is not afraid to mix and match tricks, or limbs for that matter.

But this is only a tiny taste of the magical feast that Dirk sets for all his bewildered audience members. His show simply won’t allow rest from chair-gripping magic. But after all the explosions, smoke, and applause, it’s obvious who remains the true Dirk Arthur muse- his Tigers. A video segment from an Animal Planet special is played for the audience revealing that Dirk views the animals as “colleagues, not cats.” He truly feels privileged to work with the species, “his friends.” So even though Daily News has named him “a rival to David
Copperfield” and even though he exits his own party at Tiffany Showroom on an Amtrak train arriving from nowhere, Dirk Arthur may very well be just a simple cat lover before a charismatic man of magic.

Still on a roll

“Hollywood Jack” Davison got his name from being a stuntman, but he owes his stardom to a legendary run at a craps table.

On Aug. 12, 1979, Davison started with a $1 bet on a 25-cent table at
Binion’s Horseshoe and, defying odds in the billions, didn’t give up the dice for an hour and 45 minutes. In all, he made 34 successive passes without rolling a craps on the come-out.

Davison had gone to the Horseshoe to collect a loan after losing $500 at Caesars Palace. “I was down to spit when I started. I had $6 on me when Teddy Binion, who was in the pit, said. ‘Let’s start a game.’ ”

Still a regular at Las Vegas tables at age 75, he’s often a hired gun. One night, a fellow craps shooter who was down $20,000 begged Davison, “Get me even and I’ll make it worth your while.”

Davison did more than get even; he won $37,000.

His best dice advice: “Don’t stay in a losing environment. Move on. And never double up with your money, only their money.”

Meanwhile, there are rumblings that Harrah’s, the new owner of Binion’s, plans to memorialize Davison’s feat by adding his photo to the Horseshoe’s Wall of Fame.

CURSE OF THE TALLYHO: Uneasy ride on the Strip.

A history of bad management has kept the Aladdin resort in red ink.

The new Aladdin formed a riddle as it pressed up against the boulevard dressed in its Vegas-meets-Arabian-Nights theme. It was at once intriguing and perplexing.

If not quite a mirage, the 2,547-room megaresort offers walk-up customers a mystery in the form of a question: How could a gambling palace that cost $1.1 billion be built without a front door?

In truth, the entrance did exist. Nor did visitors have to shout “open sesame” to access it. It was just that throngs of tourists might have found it easier to make a carpet fly than to step inside the building from the street. Las Vegas megaresorts like to market themselves as exclusive-but not that exclusive.

Such were the troubles of the new Aladdin when it premiered in the year 2000 on property where its namesake and the original Tally Ho casino project had been cursed with everything from bad location to hidden mob ownership.

Clooney joins cast of investors in LV project

Actor George Clooney and nightclub developer Rande Gerber have signed on to invest in a previously announced hotel and condo project on Harmon Avenue between Koval Lane and Paradise Road.

The $3 billion Las Ramblas project, the largest and most expensive project to date in the rapidly-growing Harmon and Koval corridor, also will include a casino as well as a spa, health club, dining and shopping.

The Sun first reported on the project in March, when Centra Properties purchased 25 acres for a hotel and condo complex by buying the 996-unit Harbor Island apartments and several four-plex buildings nearby for about $85 million.

Singer’s stay might be longer.

Barry Manilow’s “Manilow: Music and Passion” at the Las Vegas Hilton has been extended into 2007. An announcement is expected this week, I hear.

His Hilton engagement began in February. Originally signed to 20 weeks in 2005 and four weeks in 2006, Manilow will be adding another 25 next year, putting him at 245 appearances going into 2007.

Major renovation slated for Mirage.
New restaurants, more fiery volcano planned.

When it opened in 1989, The Mirage set a new standard for luxury in the local resort sector and helped revitalize a tired Strip.

Now, the property that launched the modern wave of themed megaresorts on Las Vegas Boulevard needs some refreshing of its own, say executives of parent company MGM Mirage. So they’re changing the 3,000-room property’s restaurant lineup, adding an upscale nightclub, upgrading its signature volcano and adding a major Cirque du Soleil show.

The renovation is the biggest single overhaul The Mirage has received since it opened 16 years ago; it’s also a bid to lure back customers who moved on to newer offerings such as The Venetian, Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas.

  1. Ilove the web site but I like having the email because I’m more inclined to read the newsletter and it is available off line too.

My 2 cents, I liked the “-” between articles because if I was uninterested in the topic I could easily scroll to the next tidbit.

    Keep it up, great job.

    Thanks

  2. Steve, I rather like the idea of having lines or something dividing the articles because there are particular segments that might not interest me & I can go directly to the end of that section & check out the next one. Just a comment. Love your newslettr & hope to be Vegas sometime when you are there.

  3. Hi there!! I look so forward to always reading your newsletter. Thank you so much for all the work you do. I now have the new website saved on my favorites! You truely are appreciated!
