Everthing Las Vegas: Issue # 525
August 9th, 2005
Notes from Steve.
Eileen and I are heading to Las Vegas next Wednesday for 6 nights. I am sending out Part 2 of the Members Corner tomorrow. There will be two more newsletters sent out before we go, one Friday and one next Tuesday.
I also want to let you know I will be testing out the Google Group I formed this Friday. The intention of starting this group was to inform my members when something new is posted at the new website. It will also include a direct link to the newsletter. Hopefully, you will get this in your mailbox.
Thanks to all the members that have posted in the COMMENT section at the website. My sponsor, Hunter and I are considering everything that is suggested.
You will even see some of the suggestions already put into place.
———–
Steve’s Soapbox:
This is a new feature that I will do when I have to comment on something good or bad:
In doing the newsletter I get a lot of personal mail, most of it complimentary, some of it not, but that goes with the territory.
I got an email today that just rubbed me the wrong way and I want to share it with you, witholding the writers name for privacy reasons.
“Re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas Members Corner Part One”
“you know, if you are going to write letters that we are supposed to think are from real people,
then they can’t all be written in the same style - sort of gives it away, ya know?”
Let me state that I do not post anything in the Members Corner that does not come directly from a member.
The articles in the Members Corner comes 100% from the MEMBERS. I do not make them up in any way, shape or form.

POOL PARTY WEEKEND SPLASHES OFF AT LAS VEGAS HILTON AUGUST 19-20

Velvet rope protects former Riviera owner’s place in hotel food court.
By Mike Weatherford.
On a Strip where the velvet rope has become a powerful status symbol, you could argue this one represents the opposite. Perhaps, paradise lost.
It’s the velvet rope protecting a special booth in the Riviera’s food court. It guards one of the remaining pieces of former casino owner Meshulam Riklis’ diminished empire.
Riklis, best-known to many as the former husband of Pia Zadora, bought the Riviera in 1973 when it still basked in top-drawer Vegas class (Dean Martin worked the showroom). When he lost it through bankruptcy reorganization in 1991, Riklis retained ownership of two things: the “Splash” show and the food court.

Pointed changes at Luxor by Jerry Fink
The recent $7.9 billion purchase of Mandalay Bay Resort Group by MGM Mirage
has had a trickle-down effect on the topless show at Luxor, which is part of the Resort Group.
“Midnight Fantasy” is changing some of its cast members — out are comedian Carole Montgomery and tap dancer Lindell Blakewill — and six of the 10 dance numbers.
“It’s always sad when I replace people,” producer/creator Anita Mann said. “It’s the hardest part of being a producer, but a change was requested.”
MGM officials requested that the production go for a younger demographic.
“They wanted a more edgy, hipper look to it,” Mann said.
The revue will celebrate its sixth anniversary at Luxor’s 350-seat Pharaoh’s Theatre in November.
Mann was happy to accommodate the new owners.
“You always like to keep freshening things up,” she said. “I like to make changes.”
The renovated show should debut in mid-August.
“The hotel will pick a date,” Mann said.
She brought in choreographers Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia to revamp the production.
Judd, formerly married to Jennifer Lopez, said the new show will have more up-to-date music and be sexier.
“We’re making some dramatic changes in costumes — there will definitely be a hotter vibe to the show,” he said.
While most of the girls will perform some topless numbers, Judd said more will be left to the imagination, “instead of it being so out there with the topless parts.”

Magic spectacular by Jerry Fink
Producers seem fascinated with rock concerts lately.
Earlier this year a topless show/rock concert (”Erocktika”) debuted at theRio.
Now a magic show/rock concert — “As Worlds Collide” — will make its firstappearance in a two-day showcase at 8 p.m. July 22-23 at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts.
The production has a storyline that takes advantage of spectacular illusions and rock music.
Tickets are $40 and $65. For information call 785-5000.
Magician/producer Paul Haynes, who also is the show’s main character, SpellBinder the magician, said during an interview last year that this is the largest illusion show ever created.
“It’s the biggest in terms of size and amount of illusions,” Haynes said when he revealed the scope of his $8 million project.
He made the announcement in November. After several delays in finding an adequate venue for the large illusions, which Haynes designed, the Aladdin theater — which boasts a 90-foot stage — was selected.
Haynes, a Las Vegas resident and head of Creative Illusions and Production Stageworks company, has designed and built grand-scale illusions for such magicians as Siegfried & Roy, David Copperfield and Lance Burton.
He has been working on his own production for more than four years.
There will be 20 illusions in the show, which features a cast of 20.
The music is original, with elements of Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, “but in a much more modern way,” Haynes said.
It will be performed by a five-piece rock band, SpellBinder.
The plot of the show involves a fight between good (SpellBinder) and evil (Blackthorn) for domination in their world.

Lance Burton thrills crowds with amazing illusions
By Michael Berg
Lance Burton

Cost: $66.50, $72.55
Info: (702) 492-3960 or (866) 80-SHOWS
News flash: Magic is just an illusion, a dose of inventive trickery meant to fool (and amaze) the audience. There aren’t people in the world who can actually make people disappear, or pull items out of thin air. (Hopefully, you’re not surprised.)
That being said, the world does still have some incredible talents in this art form. They can’t literally change the laws of time or physics, but they certainly can make you believe you’ve just witnessed something otherworldly. The true art of magic is in making you wonder, again and again—how did he do that?
Such is the ability of one of the most well-known marquee conjurers in Las Vegas, Lance Burton. Playing at the Monte Carlo since 1996, Burton, always dapper in a black tuxedo, has created a visual spectacle inside his $27 million theater, while tying together each segment with a quick wit and entertaining interplay with the crowd.
The speed of some of the tricks is mind-boggling, as Burton disappears and reappears almost instantaneously at different areas of the theater. The large-scale tricks—making a car disappear, a dual levitation of himself and one of his female assistants, among others—are astonishing, but it’s the quiet,
masterful sleight-of-hand that ultimately steals the show.

Society of Seven and Lani Misalucha impress audiences

Where: Bally’s
When: 3 p.m. Wed. & Thurs., Sat. & Sun.; 8 p.m. Fri.
Cost: $46

Among the stellar lineup of entertainers in Las Vegas, Lani Misalucha is part of the cream of the crop. Along with the music-comedy group Society of Seven, Misalucha brings audiences to their feet, as they shower her repeatedly with standing ovations.
A versatile artist, Misalucha can deliver a torch song with heartache, then seamlessly glide into a powerful aria with ease and grace. She even shows her comedic side with spoofs of Britney Spears, Shania Twain and Celine Dion.
A mainstay in Hawaii, Society of Seven brings new meaning to variety on the Strip. The group continues to morph throughout a performance by switching back and forth between blues, ballads, comedy and impersonations. Each member contributes his own genius to the ensemble.
The Society of Seven consists of Tony Ruivivar, the creative leader of the group who plays the guitar and sings with Misalucha; Bert Sagum, the comedic leader; Gary Bautista, a vocal impresario who can perform anything from Broadway to Sinatra hits, as well as a multitude of impressions; Hoku Low, who has a
crystal-clear high falsetto voice, and is a bass and horns player; Randy Abellar, an accomplished drummer and singer; Roy Guerzo, keyboardist; and Wayne Wakai, a singer whose vocals range from low bass to high falsetto. Lani Misalucha and the Society of Seven mix together like an exotic drink with fruit and little umbrellas: smooth, fresh and definitely satisfying.

Nevada Megabucks Jackpot, at $15.2 Million, is Statistically Overdue to Hit.
The Nevada Megabucks(R) dollar progressive slot jackpot has more than doubled its base amount of $7 million, and its current total of $15,231,052 (as of June 22) is statistically overdue to be won.
Nevada Megabucks(R) is a 3-coin dollar game that requires a max bet of $3 to win the top prize. Megabucks(R) launched IGT’s MegaJackpots(TM) progressive product line in 1986 and has produced 63 major winners, whose jackpots range from just over $1 million (when a million dollars was the system’s base jackpot)
to the world record slot jackpot of $39.7 million won in March 2003 at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Since then, Megabucks(R) has hit five times in Nevada casinos, with jackpots ranging from $8 million to $19.5 million. Its last major jackpot was on Oct. 31, 2004 when a 56-year-old retired postal worker won $13.6 million at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. That was one of three Megabucks(R) jackpots won in 2004. When the current Megabucks(R) jackpot is eventually won, the base jackpot will reset to $10 million.
IGT introduced its second Nevada Megabucks(R) wide-area progressive system in March — a penny video slot version with a jackpot that starts at $10 million. It, too, can be won for a max (300-coin) bet, and its current jackpot total is $10,504,902 (as of June 22). The first major jackpot on penny Megabucks(R) will easily set the standard for a payout on a penny gaming machine.
Megabucks(R) jackpots are paid in annual installments upon verification. MegaJackpots(TM) systems were developed and are maintained by IGT (www.IGT.com), a global company specializing in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution and sales of computerized gaming machines and systems products.

Red Hot Chili Peppers free concert anything but.
Clear Channel Entertainment seeks a $627,209 reimbursement from the city of Las Vegas and its centennial committee for unexpected costs incurred while staging the free Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in July.
Bruce Eskowitz, president of Texas-based Clear Channel Entertainment Properties, asked centennial committee members for financial relief during the group’s regular meeting on Monday. The concert, which was one of the ongoing centennial celebration’s signature events, drew more than 47,000 people with free
tickets.
“The expenses exceeded expectations, in part, because of the unique nature of the July 2 concert,” Eskowitz wrote in a letter to the committee.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Las Vegas tough on performers.
So much has changed in Las Vegas, except for most of the unsung troupers who perform on its stages.
The recent debacle with “Tropical Passions” at the Sahara reminds us that performers often end up with little more than a nightly moment in the limelight and the sounds of applause.
This one seems so ridiculous against the backdrop of corporate consolidation and Wall Street accountability of the new Las Vegas. A first-time show producer told performers he was cutting their pay — $1,000 per week or less for most of them — in half as a “forced savings” account until the show could get on its feet and improve its cash flow problems.

Slot machine makers search for perfect theme.
By Joan Whitely
Fruit symbols aren’t entirely pass , but the visuals of today’s slot machines are magnitudes greater than the generic slots of yesteryear.
Besides exciting colors, video imagery and wisecrack comments spoken by video characters on the slot machine’s screen, new-generation machines can incorporate advanced sound and smell features.
For example, one video slot model by International Gaming Technology, which is themed after the “I Love Lucy” television show, used to spritz a whiff of chocolate scent when a player reached the bonus round inspired by the famous TV comedy’s episode involving actress Lucille Ball at work on an assembly line in
a chocolate factory.

David Copperfield preserves the myths of magicians’ past in his personal museum.
BY SKYLAIRE ALFVEGREN
When David Copperfield first began performing in Vegas at the Hilton in 1983, he stayed at his secret warehouse, which he has since transformed into the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts. Founded by Copperfield after he purchased the 15,000 volume Mullholland Library collection in 1991, he
has continued to add to it. It now includes the Cole Collection, over 5,000 cubic square feet of magic paraphernalia Copperfield liberated from Sotheby’s storage in London, and the Dr. Robert J. Albo collection, considered the most important private collection of antiquarian magical props ever assembled.
Copperfield has exhibited part of the collection in New York and L.A. “We take this stuff (on tour) and show the history of magic,” he says. Filled with scrapbooks, stage clothes, props and playbills, he flits from Professor
Hoffman’s cups and balls to Dante’s Spirit Cabinet to nine years’ worth of correspondence between Houdini and Kellar, to Alexander’s trick turban and the ornate mystery clocks of Robert Houdin (from whom Houdini took his name), “The best magic mind of two centuries,” says Copperfield.
