Hi, anyone know of cheap long term car rentals. we are here in las Vegas for several months and wonder if there is an alternative to the regular rental car option. The regular rental charges really mount up over a long period. Is it an option to buy a car and how about what to do with it when you leave town? I would appreciate any suggestions.

reply to elainebrotchie at hotmail.com

have read and you mentioned it also, that there is a shuttle bus to GVR from the Mandalay Bay. Do any of your readers know when this started and if there is a schedule somewhere? Sometimes those shuttle buses are the best kept secrets in Vegas. They can respond to me at mjonody at ra.rockwell.com

I want to ask the readers if they know of anyplace that is offering poker

lessons. I remember seeing a sign in one of the hotels saying they were offering

Texas hold em lessons, ladies only, in the afternoon but now I don’t remember

where I saw it. I would like to play in the poker rooms but need some

instruction to feel comfortable.

respond to ltslovak at aol.com

Hi. My husband loves lobster & I recently read that lobster is included

at the Wynn buffet. Does anyone know if this is true? And how much is

it? We’re going to Vegas in late August & I’d love to surprise him with

lobster. Thanks. Figleaf3 at cox.net.

Bourbon Street casino closing.

Harrah’s has other plans for off-Strip property and land surrounding it.

A small off-Strip casino that had entertainer Wayne Newton among its original

investment group will close at the end of October to make way for future

development by the gaming industry’s largest company.

In March, Harrah’s Entertainment purchased the 166-room Bourbon Street and

several surrounding parcels totaling eight acres as a potential land investment.

Harrah’s informed the 110 Bourbon Street employees Friday that the property

would close Oct. 31. Company spokesman David Strow said the workers would be

invited to apply for jobs at Harrah’s six Las Vegas casinos.

If It Makes You Happy, Play Slots by Bill Burton

Over the last ten years slot machines have taken as the casino’s top money

maker surpassing the revenue earned from all of the table games put combined.

The fact that players are willing to play a game that they know has a high house

edge is a testament to the creative genius of the slot game designers. Once

the technology became possible to produce the modern video slot machines with

multi-lines and life changing jackpots, it was up to the slot game designers to

produce the games that would interest the players.

There challenge was top get away from the old spinning reel concept and

create games that would entertain a diverse multi-generation slot playing public.

They had the younger generation who grew up playing video games, the Baby

Boomers who saw witnessed the start of the “electronic revolution” as well as

their parents who had played the early mechanical machines. They meet the

challenge head on and created a product that would change the face of the gaming

industry.

Cook E. Jarr and The Twin Keys

By Ted Newkirk

One of our favorite things to do is to hit Harrah’s on a Tuesday or Wednesday

because we get to see two of the best lounge/party acts in town, playing

steps from each other at Harrah’s!

Twin Keys are Kimberley & Tamara Pinegar. These identical twins take the

stage just inside from the Carnival Court Tuesdays - Saturdays from 9 PM to 2 AM.

They have you laughing, singing along and dancing in no time. Keeping

tradition of the dueling pianos genre, the show is an all-request, sing-along that

incorporates audience participation and comedy. Twin Keys plays requests that

range from the Andrews Sisters to Aerosmith and AC/DC! Check out their streaming

video (not from Harrahs but you get the idea).

Cook E. Jarr is the ultimate showman. He’s the entertainers’ entertainer and

he’s at Harrah’s on the fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Cook E. Jarr has been voted

Number One lounge performer more times than any other performer in the history

of Las Vegas. He is well known for attracting big-name celebrities to his

phenomenal performances. Cook E. Jarr, King of America’s Lounges is performing at

upstairs at Harrah’s Carnival Court on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 11:00

PM. For more information and to hear streaming sound clips of his live show,

RIVIERA’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONTINUES!

While the City of Las Vegas continues to celebrate the Las Vegas Centennial

Birthday (May 15), the world-famous Riviera Hotel and Casino continues to

celebrate its 50th Anniversary (April 20) throughout the rest of 2005, through

April 20th of 2006!

The 99-cent food promotion at the Riv’s retro snack bar, Hound Doggie in

their new Penny Town location was so successful; the resort has decided to

continue the offer indefinitely. All food items (except whole pizza) are 99 cents,

which include spicy chicken sandwiches, shrimp cocktail, as well as meatball,

Italian and American hoagies.

Liberace’s 1954 Rolls Royce Silver Dawn Convertible Sedan, originally on

display through May, has been held over through December 31. Stop by and enjoy

the continuous running tape with highlights of Mr. Showmanship’s career.

Liberace was the first headliner, opening for the Riviera in 1955.

Las Vegas’ very own Walk of Stars features granite sidewalk slabs honoring

Liberace and Frank Marino, installed in front of the Riviera at the beginning of

this year. “Both have made an indelible mark on Las Vegas’ rich

entertainment history,” said Bob Alexander, President of the non-profit Las Vegas Walk of

Stars and the Motion Picture Hall of Fame Foundation. Additional sidewalk

star ceremonies are planned for Riviera headliners during the coming months.

Anniversary “Fifty Is Nifty” promotions also continue throughout the year.

Details are available at the Riviera’s Player’s Club. Also, if you are

currently a member of the Riviera Player’s Club, an invitation to October’s “50 and

Lovin’ It Party” are in the mail.

NORM: Show teaches Dragone a lesson.

His latest creation on the Strip fell short in delivering the anticipated big

splash, but a lot changes in three months, said “Le Reve” helmsman Franco

Dragone.

That was then. This is now, said Dragone. Ninety days later, “every night

people are yelling and giving standing ovations.”

“Le Reve” opened too early, he said, and “that’s one thing I will never do

again. All the musicals here (in Las Vegas) have four weeks of previews. `Ka’

had paid previews in November and December. I only did five previews, which is

not good for a show of this magnitude.”

Dragone, who returned to the United States on Saturday from a four-week

talent search in Europe, hinted that a major development is in the works.

“Steve (Wynn) is totally behind me, and I think we’ll see a few announcements

in the next week,” he said by telephone from New York City.

Dragone is involved in “a great project” for Las Vegas that’s “more musical,

not acrobatic, circus style.”

During his stop in New York, he got his first look at “Monty Python’s

Spamalot,” the Broadway hit that Wynn has lured to Las Vegas for at least seven

years. “I laughed all the way through,” said Dragone. “Very British, very well

done.”

Show Review: Forever Plaid

By Rick Garman

Broadway style musicals are becoming big business in Las Vegas, what with “

Mamma Mia!,” We Will Rock You,” and the upcoming “Hairspray” and “Phantom of the

Opera” all singing out lout for your attention. But long before these

big-budget extravaganzas hit The Strip, there was “Forever Plaid,” a minor

Off-Off-Broadway hit in New York that played at The Flamingo, well, practically forever.

The show, about a ’50s style doo-wop group killed in a car accident, has been

resurrected (sorry) at The Gold Coast, just west of The Strip on The

Flamingo. Whether or not it’s worth making the short jaunt is dependent upon two

things: if you like the style of music and if you don’t require high-art or a

substantial plot. Then again, “Mamma Mia!” doesn’t have much of a plot and

certainly can’t be considered high-art so really it all comes down to the music.

The story, such as it is, centers around Forever Plaid, a quartet of wannabe

doo-wop singers in the style of The Platters or Dion and the Belmonts who were

on their way to their first big gig when their car was hit by a busload of

Catholic schoolgirls on their way to see the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Through a convergence of astral planetary alignment and a hole in the ozone

layer the group is given one last chance to perform the big show they never got to

do and in the process achieve some sort of heavenly state of harmony.

Don’t analyze, just go with it.

So basically what you have is an excuse for some really terrific four-part

harmony on classics like “Catch a Falling Star,” “Heart and Soul,” “Love Is a

Many Splendored Thing,” “Matilda,” “Papa Loves Mambo,” and even “She Loves You”

redone from Beatles rock to barbershop smooth.

The performers (Greg Davis, Bruce Ewing, Doug Korblick, and Dale Sandish as

the Plaids and David Kanscar and Ken Seiffert on piano and bass respectively)

are terrific, getting into their geeky characters well as they grow from

stage-fright paralysis to confident tunesmiths in the course of 80 minutes. There

are diversions along the way - short storytelling vignettes from their lives

that contextualize some of the songs - a few laughs too, but really it’s all

about the singing.

Staging is simple but satisfactory in the Gold Coast showroom, which is

filled with tightly packed tables and a few booths. Production values are basically

none with a couple of lighting effects and minor stage props taking a back

seat to the music.

Which is where we get back to: do you like this kind of music? If you don’t,

don’t go to this show. It’s that simple. If you do, it’s a fun night with

undeniably talented musicians at a very inexpensive price.

Top 10 Las Vegas Top Attractions by Zeke Quezada

With so much to do it is always a good idea to have a short list of the best

Las Vegas attractions. Some are free and some require a fee but you can be

guaranteed a good time. Las Vegas attractions can range from the adult only type

to the attractions for the entire family. Las Vegas attractions will guarantee

you a good time while in Las Vegas.

1) Shark Reef At Mandalay Bay

This Las Vegas attraction features Sharks, tropical aquariums, a jelly fish

exhibit as well as a few crocodiles. A great way to spend a few hours. You will

come in contact with numerous species of sharks, marine invertebrates and

rays. All in a ancient sunken temple themed locale. Walk through a tunnel where

sharks surround you and put your fingers in the touch tank. No other Las Vegas

attraction allows you to touch living sea animals.

2) Manhattan Express rollercoaster

Of all the Las Vegas attractions this one will get you moving the fastest.

Located in the New York/New York Las Vegas resort this Roller coaster will take

you to heights of 203 feet, drops of 144 feet and speeds up to 67 MPH, It

features the world’s first “heartline” twist and dive maneuver, allowing riders to

experience the thrilling force of negative g’s! I nearly lost my lunch on

this one but it was well worth it. The ultimate Las Vegas attraction.

3) Las Vegas Attractions - Bellagio Fountains

I’ll come clean, I can be a romantic guy at times and this place has a

tendency to make me soft. The music gets going and the water dances back and forth.

In the early evening the light show along with the fine mist that fills the

air is magical. This is the romantic Las Vegas attraction

4) Eiffel Tower - Paris Las Vegas

This Las Vegas attraction gets you high in the air above Las Vegas. The

replica Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas is an exact reproduction of one of Europe’s

most famous landmarks, only at 1/2 scale. You can to ride to the top, and

experience a panoramic view of the valley, from 460 feet above the ground. There

is also the Eiffel Tower Restaurant, located on the 11th floor. Las Vegas

attractions do not get better than this.

climbing wall. Right in the showcase shopping area adjacent to the MGM Grand you

every day. This ride takes you aboard the enterprise and into space. If you’re a

With the tallest rollercoaster in the world and a great view this is an

attraction that you will not want to miss. The tower is now a Las Vegas trademark

and why not go to the top of it. Ride the rollercoaster or have dinner, it’s a

ton of fun.

10) Lion Habitat at the MGM Grand

It’s not much, but, you can take pictures with baby lions at this attraction

or just watch them walk around. I always seem to find myself standing there

for twenty minutes watching a cat sleep. I don’t know why, try it and explain it

to me. This is the Las vegas attraction where you can get a picture with a

huge cat.

Las Vegas Art Museum To Host New Chinese Exhibition

The Las Vegas Art Museum (LVAM) will host an exhibition July 30 through Sept.

23 that will open a window on elite Chinese society during the Ming and Qing

dynasties. “Chinese Beauty and Elegance: Collecting and Connoisseurship in

Scholarly Taste” will include a furnished re-construction of a period scholar’s

studio, a private collection of Chinese jade and landscape scrolls from the

Wing Fong collection. An exhibition preview for museum members, scheduled for

Friday, July 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., also will include a new exhibition of Latin

American art that features Cuban painter Carlos Alfonzo. The museum is

located at 9600 West Sahara Avenue.

Trained in the Confucian classics, an elite group of scholar-gentlemen played

a dominant role in Chinese society during the Ming and Qing dynasties of the

17th and 18th centuries. Some served as officials; others played the role of

refined gentlemen, pursuing a broad range of cultural interests. These

scholarly pursuits are the focus of the exhibition. Museum visitors will view more

than 30 artifacts on loan from the Pacific Asia Museum of Pasadena, California,

including exquisite porcelains, delicately carved wood, writing accoutrements

and many other fascinating objects used by these artists, poets and

calligraphers.

The exhibition also will feature many pieces of a local private collection of

magnificently carved Chinese jade that demonstrate the astounding

craftsmanship of the artisans, as well as four large vertical landscape scrolls on loan

from the UNLV Beam Music Center. The scrolls were originally owned and

commissioned in China by the late Wing Fong, a Las Vegas businessman well known for

his humanitarian and educational contributions to the community.

LVAM has been a sister museum of the Naxi DongBa Cultural Museum in China

since

December 2004 in order to facilitate East-West cultural exchange events. An

introduction to this Chinese sister museum will be included in the exhibition.

The exhibition’s guest curator, Kristine Galassi, will give a free lecture on

“Chinese Beauty and Elegance: Collecting and Connoisseurship in Scholarly

Taste” at the museum at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, followed by a brief tour of

the exhibition.

The Las Vegas Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through

Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for

seniors 55 years and older, and $3 for students 13 years and older; children 12 and

younger enter free when accompanied by an adult. Docent tours are available at

2 p.m. weekends and other times with advance arrangements. On display at the

gallery now through July 24 are “Asian Art Now 2005″ and “George Hunter’s

Images of Canada: The Land, The People” exhibitions. The LVAM Virtual Tour is

Slot Reviews by Gayle Mitchell

The three slot reviews below are new IGT versions that offer Instant Wins of

at least $100,000.

1) Dream of Jeannie Magic Spin:

Barbara Eden’s voice is back with another Jeannie version. This time though,

you will find a mechanical top box bonus displaying two bonus reels.

Another first is that the progressive $100,000+ prize is one of the highest

found at a multi-denomination game offering ‘pennies to play’.

The main bonus event is triggered when Jeannie’s bottle lands on the second

or fourth reel.

The bottle then expands to fill the reel and payouts are doubled for any

combo on paylines in this area.

Another is the Magic Spin Bonus that occurs when 3 or more Bonus Symbols are

spun thus revealing a group of genie bottles awaiting your selection and bonus

credits. If the selected bottle reveals a Magic Spin Multiplier symbol, the

two-tiered top box comes into play providing multiplier amounts from 2X to 5X

plus a bonus $ value for a total bonus reward.

The ‘best of Jeannie’ is the top reward for five TV Hits symbols offering at

least $100,000 and reset at that amount.

This is the moment that you are truly, The Master.

2) Magic 8 Ball:

IGT goes big for this game with a large 8-Ball hanging above you encased in

the top box. Look up and you are sure to find this ‘Instant Winner’ slot on

the casino floor.

The main event is a go when three 8-Ball symbols land on the first three

reels of an active payline, then a question mark appears on the screen. Your touch

of the screen will provide two, three or four spins of the giant pool ball

and a cue to begin the ball spinning.

Among several bonus options, a stop of the 8 spot will give the player 8 free

spins.

One of the IGT Famous Games, this slot boasts frequent bonus rounds and high

payouts.

The top jackpot is yours for five 8-Ball symbols on the first payline with a

payday of at least $100,000. It’s Instant Magic under ‘the Big Ball’.

3) The Dating Game:

You will remember this golden oldie where a bachelorette questions three

bachelors before choosing one for a dream date. The game is re-created with

symbols of hearts, eager bachelors, beautiful bachelorettes and of course, the

voice of your host, Jim Lange.

One of two bonus rounds is The Dating Game Bonus that begins when three

bachelor or bachelorette silhouette symbols appear on the first four reels.

Your choice will determine a bonus amount.

Secondly, two Jim Lange symbols in any position on the second and fourth reel

trigger a free spin round titled Blow Me a Kiss Bonus. You are then rewarded

with 10 free spins that may continue to a second round of free spins as the

Kiss Me symbols accumulate.

If you receive credit for five symbols, the game adds 10 more free spins and

possibly more as $$$ continue to mount. This round ends when no free spins

remain or when you have gone through a total of 200 free spins.

The largest reward is reserved for five Dating Game symbols in a row with max

coins in play.

After an Instant Win, the game resets at $100,000. awaiting the next dreamy

date.

  1. Hi Steve:

I love the larger size print and the links to members corner, dining, etc. I think this newletter will evolve a grade A+ newletter. It’s hard to improve on something that is a big hit with your fans. But if anyone can do it, you can!

  2. Good Luck on the site. It’s hard to read (in light grey and blue) Please print in black.
    Thanks.

  3. We love the newsletter as it is. Please don’t change the format. Do not need or want color, graphics, etc. Just need info in a basic form.
    Fancier site= higher costs=”pay-to-read” newsletter?
    Thanks for listening.

  4. Love your new format - alot easier to follow. Been coming to Vegas for 28 straight years (about twice/year) and your newsletter is always helpful - keep up the good work!!!!!

  5. Steve,
The new site looks great so far. Nice format.Keep up the good work. I am looking forward to it.

  6. This new website is fabulous!!! It is like a one stop information headquarter. I like all the links to coupons, hotels, reviews, restaurants, shows, and maps. Will you announce air fare prices that are reasonable? Or any other aspects of Las Vegas that are running specials?

    Sincerely,

    Linda

  7. I like the proposed format. I would like to see the “Categories” expanded. ie Casino Reviews, Reader Trip Reports,Casino Promotions, etc.

  8. Looks good so far, but please keep it simple,as millions of us still on dial-up connections as we do not have access to DSL, etc. So stay away from “flash” etc and insure it is stays a fast loading site for ALL of us!

  9. Love the new format. Info is still great. Presentation is better.

  10. Hi Steve,

I think the new web format opens up great potential for future ideas. One suggestion, when putting a web address in an article, how about making it a hyperlink so you can go directly to the site without having to cut and paste.

I have enjoyed reading your newsletters for many years and look forward to many more years!

    Roger

  11. Steve,

I for one love the new site, good luck with it.
