Everything Las Vegas: Issue # 515
I had a great time in Las Vegas, as usual, and I hope to have my trip report ready by next week. I was only down $40 after 5 days of gambling but ended up losing a little under $300 for the entire trip which I think is very good.
I always said that no matter how many times you go to Las Vegas, there is always a FIRST in every trip. This time was no exception as I walked out of a Las Vegas show for the first time. Details will be in the trip report.

MERGER MADNESS:
For those of you who try to keep score of who owns what in our town, the last
of the giant mergers just came to a close as Harrah’s Entertainment finalized
its $9 billion-plus buyout of Caesars Entertainment. Harrah’s holdings in Las
Vegas now include Harrah’s, Flamingo, Caesars Palace, Bally’s, Paris and the
Rio. This means that Harrah’s now owns 16,825 hotel rooms on the Strip, which
is 22.3 percent of the available total.
I’m against mergers and acquisitions on a scale such as we’ve seen here
recently, but I have to admit that Harrah’s is an exceptionally well-run company
that does cater to the middle class, so I don’t think we’ll get too royally
screwed down the road.

MIKE WEATHERFORD: Does Michael Jackson have a future here?
You have to expect talk about Michael Jackson making a long-term commitment
to Las Vegas. But you don’t have to believe it.
Las Vegas is built on big ideas, and there’s some logic in imagining the
dethroned King of Pop staging a spectacle that goes beyond Celine Dion’s to
reclaim his crown. He has always fancied the sort of gee-whiz production effects –
3-D, monsters, UFOs, you name it — that a customized venue on the Strip could
offer him.
And he has history here, beyond running up big bills in his Mirage bungalow
during the Steve Wynn era. Jackson actually worked Las Vegas stages as a youth,
performing with the Jackson 5 in the early ’70s. Sharing the backstage
hallways of the old MGM Grand (now Bally’s) led to an enduring friendship with
Siegfried & Roy (in “Hallelujah Hollywood” at the time). He wrote and performed the
theme for their spectacle at The Mirage when he was still on a credible
plateau of pop stardom.

Horn checks into clinic in Germany
Roy Horn has entered a clinic in Germany noted for stem cell research. Still
struggling to walk after a tiger attack almost killed him two years ago, Horn
checked into the Leonardis Clinic in Bad Heilbrunn, Germany, on Thursday.
A statement released Friday said Horn and Siegfried Fischbacher had returned
to their home country so that Horn could “continue his remarkable ongoing
rehabilitation and therapy.” The statement made no mention of what Horn was being
treated for.
The clinic is also known as a leading cancer treatment center, but “this
isn’t about cancer,” said Siegfried & Roy spokesman Dave Kirvin. “I don’t know
what the treatment involves other than they felt this was the best place in the
world to get it done,” he said.
One of the world’s top gene researchers is on the staff at the German clinic.
A physician who interned at the exclusive clinic tells me that the clientele
list includes royal families and international celebrities.
Stem cell research has been opposed in the U.S. by right-to-life groups
because it involves the destruction of embryos. President Bush threatened to veto a
stem cell funding bill earlier this year, but Congress recently approved
limited federal funding.
Stem cells can be used to develop tissue, which, in Horn’s case, might allow
damaged nerves to regenerate.
The late “Superman” Christopher Reeve, left unable to walk after falling from
a horse, was a prominent advocate of stem cell research before he died last
year.

The made-over revue’s official premiere was Wednesday.
While the show is given a dustup every couple of years in an effort to keep
it fresh, the latest incarnation is one of the best in recent memory.

“O”™ At The Bellagio
Cirque du Soleil weaves an aquatic tapestry of artistry, surrealism and
theatrical romance in the timeless production, “O.” The international cast of
world-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, divers and characters perform in, on,
and above water to create a breathtaking experience in a magnificent theatre
reminiscent of a European opera house.
Beyond circus, beyond theatre, Cirque du Soleil has created an entirely
original form of live entertainment with “O”. The innovative team unveiled their
most daring project to date with the premiere on October 15, 1998 at the
Bellagio in Las Vegas.
“O” pays tribute to the magic of the theatre—from the simplest street
performance to the most lavish of operas—where anything is possible and the drama of
life plays itself out before our very eyes.
Inspired by the concept of infinity and the elegance of its pure form, “O”,
phonetically speaking, is the French word for water (spelled “eau”). Written
and directed by Franco Dragone, who has created ten of Cirque du Soleil’s
previous productions, “O” has brought a new level of performance art to the Las
Vegas Strip.
With an international cast of 81 artists, performing in, on and above water,
Cirque du Soleil’s “O” tells the tale of theatre through the ages and frees us
to lose ourselves in a world without limits. Join Eugen, an ageless theatre
guardian, and Guifà his eager yet unsuspecting visitor, as they embark on a
90-minute voyage where dreams are not only encouraged, they actually come true.
An array of awe-inspiring images celebrates the vitality of the human
spirit. Among these images are the visually stunning duo trapeze act, world-class
divers and daring displays of highly specialized aerial acrobatics. The
innovative “Barge” number, performed by eight women from Ukraine and Russia,
intrigues with a unique interpretation of traditional circus art and dramatic
choreography. A spectacular visual treat, the fire sequence provides a contrast to the
ever-present element of water. The journey continues with the chaotic cadre
number and the poetic prowess of contortion. “O” features a team of
synchronized swimmers, who, under the direction of Canadian gold-medallist Sylvie
Fréchette, bring an entirely original approach to the sport and to the theatre. The
entire performance is underscored by the international melodies of a 10-piece
orchestra.
“O” is a spectacular feat of imagination and engineering. The 1.5-
million-gallon pool is 25 feet deep and measures 150 by 100 feet. Three years of intense
study and testing have resulted in a one-of-a-kind aquatic environment. The
classical proscenium style of the Bellagio Theatre is another Cirque du Soleil
first, with tiered orchestra seating, side galleries on two levels and a
balcony.

Long-Awaited ‘Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill’ Opens
Harrah’s Las Vegas Casino & Hotel will open Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar &
Grill at 11:30 a.m. on June 29, 2005.
Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill features a bar, lounge, restaurant, live
music venue and retail store, all of which offer the finest in American
spirits, food, entertainment and merchandise. The new venue features a “down home”
feel that will satisfy country-music lovers of all types.
Giant guitar pick-lined walls, guitar-shaped bar, a stage featuring live
music nightly, a dance floor and a private dining room are only some of the unique
offerings at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill.
“The common theme here is great food, attentive service and an enjoyable
atmosphere,” said David Hoenemeyer, assistant general manager of Harrah’s Las
Vegas. “This isn’t just for country music fans. It is for anyone who wants a fun
dining and entertainment experience.”
The Harrah’s food and beverage team went on a special mission, scouring
restaurants in Norman, Oklahoma and Oklahoma City, dining in all of Keith’s
favorites, in order to assemble a true southern home-style menu. Some of Keith’s
favorite recipes include a fried bologna sandwich made with thick cut bologna
seared with onions and American cheese, served on garlic grilled Texas toast; a
pulled-pork sandwich made with shredded slow-roasted pork shoulder tossed in
Toby’s barbeque sauce, topped with crispy coleslaw and served on a soft potato
roll; and, a tasty side of classic “freedom fries.”
For something sweeter, there is sweet potato pecan pie with bourbon ice
cream, warm chocolate bread pudding or blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream.
All dishes will be served up by a stunning, all-female wait staff, clad in sexy
country attire.
Whether or not guests have “a singing voice,” they will find themselves
chiming in to such Keith hits as “Whisky Girl” and “Beer for My Horses” while
catching his music videos on one of 20 state-of-the-art plasma television screens,
which will broadcast major sporting events and other exciting programs
throughout the year.
In addition, for those that feel the need to two-step, live country and rock
bands, hand-picked by Keith, will perform nightly from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Toby Keith fans will delight in the vast array of Keith merchandise,
including t-shirts, cups, guitars, memorabilia, CDs and DVDs. The retail store is
open from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 to 2 a.m. Friday and
Saturday.
The 262-seat, 17,000-square-foot restaurant, bar and retail area is located
at the interior promenade situated directly adjacent to the Harrah’s Las Vegas
monorail concourse and is open from 11:30 a.m. - 2 a.m. Sunday through
Thursday and 11:30 a.m. - 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Toby Keith is currently one of the hottest performers in music. The
singer/songwriter and acclaimed entertainer finished last year as Billboard’s 2004 Top
Country Artist, Top Male Country Artist, Top Country Album Artist and Top Hot
Country Singles & Tracks Artist. His release the previous year, “Shock’N
Y’all,” was also one of the top selling country offerings of the year, and his
November release of “Greatest Hits 2″ is nearing triple platinum and continues to
be one of the genre’s top sellers. Keith remains one of country’s top touring
acts and a highly respected musician and songwriter.
Keith, the first country artist to perform an AOL Music Live concert with a
record setting 850,000 downloads in the first 24 hours, released this month his
new studio album, “Honkytonk University.” The first single, “Honkytonk U,” is
an autobiographical song that harkens back to days that Keith spent working
in his grandmother’s nightclub. His current single, “Good As I Once Was,” is a
song that comes from a saying that his dad used.
Keith has performed the cut on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on June 8 as
well as on the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on June 9. He will also
perform on an upcoming episode of the “CBS Early Show.” His national headlining
tour “Toby Keith’s Big Throwdown II” began on June 10 in Charlotte, N.C.

Eat for Next to Nothing
It used to be easy as pie to get cheap food in Las Vegas, even pie. The
casinos were desperate to get you in, and they cut their losses on the food hoping
you’d be so full and happy you’d be willing to gamble away your savings. Not
so anymore. The cheap eats are fewer and further in between these days, but
these tips will keep you and your wallet stuffed full.
The buffets in town are the most obvious place to start, but don’t limit
yourself. There are plenty of other options that don’t include slimy scrambled
eggs and corn beef hash unfit for dogs.

McCarran adding checkpoint lanes to ease passenger traffic.
McCarran International Airport this morning said it will open two additional
checkpoint lanes at the A and B gates in an effort to accommodate growth and
speed passenger traffic during peak demand periods.
The new checkpoint lanes, which will open Wednesday, will give passengers
needing to reach the A and B gates a total of nine lanes.
Airport officials point out that McCarran hosts 1,066 daily departures and
arrivals and reached a 2004 passenger total of nearly 41.5 million. The current
seat capacity of airlines using the A and B gates is equal to about 14,000 a
day when allowing for an 80 percent load factor, an airport statement said.
The checkpoint lanes are operated by the Transportation Security
Administration.

Step into a world of live theater and empty your head of radio goo-goo and
Internet ga-ga. British comedic writer and stand-up Ben Elton collaborated with
Queen to create a rock musical that sends a message to all consumers: Stop the
C.R.A.P. (Computer Recorded Analog Pop)! We Will Rock You tells the tale of
Galileo Figaro and Scaramouch, two outcasts caught in the forthcoming world of
Planet Mall, where Ga Ga products and a Killer Queen rule.
By using the songs and lyrics of Queen, Elton devised a plastic-wrapped
future for a content, cookie-cutter race that has no individuality, no free
thinkers and no man-made music. Only one mind, one voice and one corporation,
Globalsoft, controls everything. All music is generated and fed to the public via
their wristband media technology.
Alas, the power of music reaches to a group of rebels, the Bohemians, who,
incidentally, live in Heartbreak Hotel. They continue to grasp the snippets of
lyrics they’ve heard as well as carry on the names of the musicians like Ozzy,
Aretha and Puff Daddy.
The revolutionaries find their hero in Figaro, who, with his “chick,” makes
his journey to save the world. The Bohemians finally break free of mind
control, hear their rhapsody and happily rock on ever after.

glory.
Jubilee!
Where: Bally’s
When: 7:30 & 10:30 p.m. Sat.-Thurs.
Cost: $55-$69 plus tax
Info: (702) 992-7970, (866) 80-SHOWS
Straight from the imagination of Don Arden, “king of the modern production
show,” comes Jubilee!, a classic Las Vegas extravaganza in which more than 100
dancers present their talent on a multimillion dollar set. The huge stage at
Bally’s explodes with vibrant color, magnificent lighting and a cavalcade of
performers adorned with elaborate costumes. Beautiful women are draped in pink
and orange feather boas, others in elegant black and silver gowns, and all have
headdresses that reach for the sky.
The exhibition of topless women is presented tastefully as a testament to the
beauty of the female form. The atmosphere is altered dramatically between
acts by the set changes from one scene to another. Vignettes including circus
performances and even a sinking of the Titanic are followed by a tribute to dance
greats Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This production encompasses all
aspects of the traditional Las Vegas variety show.
A trip to Las Vegas would not be complete without being immersed in the
comedic, emotive and narrative performances Jubilee! has to offer. As the lights
fade and the audience exits the theater, you’re left with one thought: “This is
Las Vegas!”
