Ka Review

I saw ‘Ka’ in December while it was still in previews, so it may have changed a little between the time I saw it and the its currents version, but I doubt it. ‘Ka’ is a bit of a departure from the typical Cirque

show. They have focused less on the acrobatics (although the feats are still a big part of the show) and concentrated more on a coherent story. The production was very operatic. I was able to follow it and understand the journey, but I was also aware of the story before seeing the show. The twins are separated during an attack in the very beginning. An evil group takes one of the twins. That twin eventually escapes and the show follows the life and journey of both twins back to each other.

Even though the production was operatic, the music was

not as memorable as that of the other Cirque shows.

It was OK, but not great. The stage and the staging

were incredible. You need to be at the theater at

least 15 minutes before the show in order to get the

full experience and see the characters running and

flying from the catwalks which surround the audience.

The preshow announcement was very well done. Nothing

was spoken. It was acted out by a few of the

characters on the railing at the front of the stage.

I was disappointed that the surround staging was lost

once the actual show started. Speaking of surround

… there are speakers in the headrests of the seats.

This kind of attention to detail is typical of what to

expect with the show. I did find myself paying more

attention to the technical elements than the story

from time to time, but I think that is true of all the

Cirque shows. Part of the spectacle is the use of

technology.

If you can only see one Cirque show, I think ‘Mystere’

is the best choice. I have enjoyed all of the Cirque

shows in Las Vegas for different reasons. ‘Mystere’

seems to have a more universal appeal.

Take Care,

Mark

Re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas: Members Corner

Left for Vegas on March 6 and returned on March 9. My wife and I stayed at

Harrahs, but spent most of our time at Imperial Palace. IP has a much better

comp system than does Harrahs. My wife won $1300.00 on the slots the first 30

minutes at IP. That kept her in business for the rest of the trip. She came

home even. More than I can say for me. We ate most of our comped meals at IP,

except for breakfast at Andreott’s at Harrahs and the Range Steakhouse. We

go the Range once a year, it cost about $80 for 2 for the steaks, with salad

and baked potato not including tip. You can share the baked potato and save 6

bucks as they are big enough to be shared. The service and atmosphere at the

Range is super. This time we were going to try out Delmonicos at the Vietinian

as I hear this is a great steakhouse as well. ( Maybe next year) Andreott’s

has a great breakfast for $7.99. They are open now from 5am to 2PM serving

breakfast and lunch now that the garden cafe is closed for remodeling. I tried

out Texas hold em at IP’s poker room. This game is very addictive and popular

now. I played the $2-4 tables 2 days in a row and won a little money.

Roulette is now my game of choice at IP. One day a high roller sat down and the Pit

Bosses were a bit nervous. They seemed relieved when he left the table only a

few hundred a head as he was betting more than $1000.00 each time. I mention

this to the dealer and she said the bosses had to account for all money that

left the tables. The weather was nice in the high 70s and 80 the day we left

coming back in to the Midwest with weather in the 20s. While we came home

down some, it was otherwise a great trip and we may go back again in the fall.

Trip report

Hi Steve, thank you so very much for the best Las Vegas Newsletter anywhere!

You have given us so many great tips and recommendations that I wanted to

pass one on to you. I was in Las Vegas the last week of February. I stayed two

nights at the Hilton, two nights downtown at the Plaza and three nights at the

Rio, all comped. Anyway I was at the Plaza on thursday night. I know you enjoy

the Center Stage restaurant. The Plaza has added an Italian restaurant right

next to the Center Stage. I couldn’t get in it was so busy. You should recall

the piano player and small bar in the same area. To my delight they have added

a singer who now sings with the piano man. Her name is Windy Edmead and she

is really great. She sings Broardway songs, upbeat songs, love songs, the

blues, anything! She takes requests and I asked her if she knew “Our Love Is Here

To Stay” and she said “certainly” and went into a wonderful rendition of the

song. She puts everything she has into a song and sings with all her heart. I

was so impressed that I went back friday night. and I was glad I did as they

added a bass player and drummer that made a great trio backing her up. Drinks

are $5.50 but no one was pushing you to buy a drink. I had to go to the bar for

a drink. I was by myself on this trip but it would be a great place to take a

date, catch Windy Edmead at 7PM, then have dinner at the Center Stage at 8PM.

Windy is so good that I doubt that Plaza can keep her for long. See her while

you can! Fred, Detroit, MI

Trip Report – Lake Las Vegas

I recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas. As a regular visitor

who typically stays on the Strip, this was a different experience, both good

and bad. For those not familiar with the area, Lake Las Vegas is a

master-planned community on the outskirts of Henderson. There are currently two resorts,

the Hyatt Regency and the Ritz-Carlton. The Hyatt is a traditional,

self-contained full service golf resort. Think Palm Springs or Scottsdale. The

Ritz-Carlton also has all of the expected resort amenities, but is situated about a

little less than a mile from the Hyatt within the Monte Lago Village, which

is a collection of upscale shops, restaurants, and condos. The somewhat

Moorish theme of the Hyatt was nicely done, with beautifully tended grounds and

nicely finished public areas. The guest rooms were a major disappointment,

however. Having grown accustomed to the lavish rooms of Bellagio, Venetian, and

theHotel, the standard room at the Hyatt was no better than what you find in a

typical airport Marriott, despite a steep nightly rate of $229. I’ve read

where these same rooms can be had on Priceline for $99 a night, something to

consider if you wish to stay in this area. The Hyatt contains a small (and I do

mean small) casino, Casino Baraka. This is the first casino I’ve seen that has

operating hours, 10am to 2am, with no table games until 4:00pm. Table games

were limited to blackjack and half a craps table. There may have been a couple

poker derivatives, as well. No roulette. There is also a selection of newer

slot machines, which were reported to be fairly loose. While I have never

been on a cruise, others have commented that this casino is similar to what you

would find on a Princess or NCL cruise ship. With limited hours and no real

craps, I preferred the Monte Lago Casino, located in the aforementioned Monte

Lago Village, and a short stroll from the Ritz. There is also a free shuttle

that runs between the Village and the Hyatt. While small, this is real,

full-service, 24-hour casino with everything you want, including a small sports book

and sports bar located on a balcony overlooking the main casino floor. Table

limits were comparable with the Strip, which is to say $10 and up. You may

even find a $5 BJ game during off-hours. This casino reminded quite a bit of

the old Desert Inn: classy, but a bit too subdued. One night, we ventured

away from LLV, and went to the Palms to get a taste of real Vegas action. Expect

a full 30 minute drive each way, more if there is traffic. It was my first

visit to the Palms, and we had a great time in the lively craps pit, as well as

the phenomenal Ghost Bar. I even walked away with some of the Maloof’s

money, which made the evening a complete success. We all agreed the Hyatt was

simply too far to make this drive more than once, so we spent most of our casino

time at the Monte Lago. If you go to Vegas looking for action and lots of

gaming, the Strip and Downtown are a far better choice. The Hyatt is a great

choice if you are bringing children, as they have lots to keep the kids busy.

Otherwise, if you like the idea of a golf resort, but don’t want to deal with the

hassle of being is such a remote location, I would suggest taking a look at

the JW Marriott, Mandalay Bay, or Wynn Las Vegas, which opens next month.

Trip Report

Spent 10 days in Vegas Dec 18-27…

left Newark (took 1 hr to get through

security) Sat, arrived Las Vegas about

11:30, LAS is the only aiport I know

of where the baggage is ready by the

time you get there…picked up rental

car (got upgraded by Hertz from Taurus

to Town Car-nice ride, but no bargain

trying to navigate some of those

Vegas parking decks!!)..checked in

at Boardwalk about 1:00, first time

there (Sat, Sun for $95-not bad for

weekend that part of Strip!!), no line…

nice, clean room, view of Strip looking

North-Paris, Bellagio fountains, etc)..

went down to casino, started playing

blackjack @ $25/hand, couldn’t buy

a hand!!! Lost $375 instantly (or so

it seemed), offered to just give dealer

the money, why bother with dealing

the cards??? Took break, went next

door to Monte Carlo, first time in there,

too, ate at Sbarro with a coupon I

picked up, went back to Boardwalk,

figuring my luck had to change (it’s

a good thing I don’t get paid for figuring!),

lost $50 in the 25 cent video poker

machines (double bonus, pretty weak

pay schedule, had to move up to $1

machines for better schedules), played

some more blackjack, this time at $10/

hand-lost another $220!! Dropped $20

in Wheel of Fortune slots, another $40

on VP, walked up and down the Strip

for a while, then called it a night, sat

down to figure out my picks for next day’s

NFL games…first 1/2 day in town down

about $700 (1/3 of my bankroll)!!!

Day 2: Had breakfast at the Boardwalk

cafe, had the skillet, was pretty good,

certainly got the job done!! Played 7

NFL games at $20 each…watched the

games for a while, took a walk, wound

up at MGM Grand, have walked through

this place before, but never really

spent time there…played some VP(deuces

wild), played for about an hour, breaking

even!!! Won 3 out of my 4 early football

games…went back to Boardwalk, ate

at buffet, better than you’d think, had

tickets to see Rita Rudner at NYNY,

had 15 minutes to kill there, was enough

time to blow another $100 at BJ table

(@$10/hand)…show was pretty good-

not side-splitting, but consistently funny…

lost 2 of 3 late football games, net win

of $12 on NFL for day…went to Monte

Carlo, used 2 for 1 coupon at Nathans,

dropped $20 in Wheel of Fortune machine…

only lost about $110 today!!!!

Day 3: Checked out of Boardwaok, spent

good part of the day looking at real estate

with realtor referred to me by my local realtor,

looking for something affordable I could rent

out until I could move here (probably not any

time soon), predictably slim pickings, did find

townhouse in old Henderson, but was overpriced,

seller wouldn’t budge…I didn’t, however, lose

any money!!! Checked into Rio ($99 for 2 nights),

the room they gave me smelled awful-couldn’t

identify the smell (a combination of cheap

cigar & bacon was the closest I could come),

they gave me a new room-called it an upgrade

(it had a cofeemaker!!!)…went to the Carnival

World buffet, every time I’d come here in the

past, line was too long, was same way this

time (looked like approx. 45 min. wait), bypassed

the line by using the room charge desk…

buffet was as good as it’s reputation-definitely

didn’t leave this place hungry!!!! Couldn’t find

any decent VP machines, threw in $20 at a

marginally playable Double Bonus machine,

hit 4 of a kind, walked away with a $60 win for

the day!!! All their shows were dark (normal

for the 3rd & 4th week of December-the trade-

off for the least expensive week of the year),

watched rest of Monday Nite Football (glad

I didn’t bet it-liked NE, would’ve lost), called it

a night

Day 4: Slept late (because I could!!), went over

to Key Largo for lunch-$1.99 1/2 lb cheeseburger

& fries-best burger deal in town, has since been

closed for good, was a dive (never saw more than

1 table open), but was fun place, will be missed…

broke even playing $10 BJ, awful VP, won’t miss

this part of the place!!! Went to Trop, first time

in here-was very surprised that my player’s club

card from Trop in Atlantic City isn’t interchangeable

with this place-seems like a pretty bone-headed

marketing move….found few full pay Deuces Wild

VP machines mixed in with the lousy ones, by

the slot club booth, between the rest rooms…

won a quick $20, took the money and ran…went

to see the free bird show, was worth every penny

it cost!!!…was amusing, wouldn’t pay for it…took

a walk through the gambling museum, interesting

if you’re into LV history…went over to check out

the Tuscany casino, good deals here for new slot

club sign-ups, found good double bonus VP

machine, lost $20 instantly, had quick little run

at BJ table, walked away up $50…back to Rio,

consistently has longest wait at valet of any casino

I’ve been to…went across street to the Palms,

tried the buffet, more interesting than most, great

deal for the money…great place for VP…played

JOB(9/6), lost $20…dropped $32 in wheel of

fortune…dropped $20 in Deuces Wild…won $40

on 10/ 7 double bonus…dropped $50 at Pai Gow

table (almost instantly-this game usually at least

takes a while to lose at!!)…stopped at Gold Coast

on way back, dropped $20 in double bonus VP,

$25 on wheel of fortune…time to call it a night,

down $75 for day

Day 5: Check out of Rio, into Stardust ($38 for the

2 nights, and $40 in match play coupons!!)…

easy check in, I like this place, in good shape for

a dinosaur, and has everything you need (except a

playable VP machine)…went next door to Westward

Ho, had to have their $1.49 3/4 lb hot dog-this is

a meal in itself!!! good place for VP (usually), lost

$10 in JoB, played BJ for 45 minutes, broke even,

lost $40 on Double Bonus…went over to LV Hilton,

bought tickets for that night’s David Brenner show…

dropped my daily $20 in wheel of fortune…back to

stardust, did the buffet (very ordinary, but no complaints),

back to Hilton for Brenner show, was okay, started

out slow, picked up as he went along, went a really

long way for some of his jokes…played some 3 card

poker, first time I ever played this game, didn’t really

like it-wasn’t just the $50 I lost…back to Stardust,

played some $10 BJ, lost $100 (plus both my $20

match play coupons-usually they don’t let you use

both in same session-maybe they knew something??)

in 15 minutes…played a lousy Double Bonus machine,

lost another $20 in 10 minutes, called it a night, down

$240 for the day

Day 6: Went next door to the New Frontier for their

breakfast buffet (had $2 off coupon), was lamest

I’ve ever seen…walked down to the Flamingo, checked

out the the penguins, played one of the win a car slot

machines, didn’t win the car (’vette), did win $44…

went next door to O’sheas, sat down at BJ table,

didn’t realize was a 6/5 BJ until I was playing, stayed

anyway, won $50…back to Frontier, won another $50

at BJ…can’t figure how this place stays open, really

no reason to walk in the door…back to Stardust, won

another $100 in 45 minutes…ate dinner at William B’s

steakhouse, had coupon (think it was for $10 off),

really good food, service a little slow for not being very

busy, seemed a little over priced…took ride across

town to see the Christmas-lighted cactus garden at

Ethel M’s chocolate factory-was interesting, not sure

was worth the trip in 35 degree weather… back to

Stardust, called it a night, up $245 for day!!!!!

Day 7: Had Stardust breakfast buffet, pretty much what

you’d expect….played Super Fun 21 (BJ), didn’t have

super fun, lost $50, dumped $20 in wheel of fortune,

checked out, took ride through Valley of Fire Park-

is 45 min-1 hr North of town, highly recommend the

drive if you need a diversion, have been there 3 times

now…back to town, checked into Fitzgerald’s ($114

for the 3-day Holiday weekend)…this parking garage

was definitely not built with full size cars in mind….

room on 32nd floor, great view toward the East-Sunrise

Mtn, etc…this place has the slowest (yes, even

slower than the ones at the IP!!), noisiest elevators

in town!!!…found bank of 10/7 double bonus machines

next to bar by check-in desk, dropped $20, went down

to the Plaza, used my $3 coupon on cheeseburger

at Plaza Diner, won $50 playing Pai Gow…back to the

Fitz, lost $60 on VP, down $10 on nickel win a BMW

slot machine…went to Las Vegas Club (now Vegas Club),

played BJ for 45 minutes, broke even…across to the

Golden Gate for a 99 cent shrimp cocktail ( a must if

you’re at Fremont St), walked Fremont St & surrounding

area for a while (every time I come to town, I find

myself spending more and more time downtown-

the energy on Fremont St is addictive!!!), then back to

Fitz, dropped another $40 on VP in 45 minutes, called

it a night, down $170 for the day.

Day 8: Merry Christmas!! Fremont St is pretty deserted

today…dropped $40 in Double Bonus, $20 in 4 of a kind

bonus machine…took a ride (I’ve got the town car, might

as well use it!) out to Lake Las Vegas, impressive,

definitely up-scale…took ride south of town, checked out

a couple of towns I’ve seen on the map but never been

to, Goodsprings (basically a shanty town) and Sandy

Valley (really spread out, a lot of ‘paper’ roads, scattered

trailers and a small fly-in neighborhood..as far as I could

tell, the nearest store of any kind is a convenience store

22 miles away-but land is cheap-saw a 2 1/2 acre building

lot for $10,000….back to Vegas, went to Plaza, got

ticket to Larry G. Jones (man of 1002 voices) show…

had 1/2 hr to kill, was enough time to lose $150 at BJ table…

show was good, funny, well worth the price (think it was

$6.95, 1 drink included, or something like that)…played

some 5 cent VP, switching between double bonus &

JoB, still lost $20….back to Fitz, played $20 6-team

teaser at sports book…played Pai Gow, dropped $50…

blackjack for a while, lost $25, dropped another $20 in

VP machine, called it a night, down $325 for day.

Day 9: Went next door to 4 Queens, usually do pretty

good here, dropped $20 in 10/7 double bonus, played

long enough to get comped entree at Magnolias Veranda,

will save it for dinner, went across street to the Fremont

for their buffet…it was ok…checked out their VP, nothing

even remotely playable (6/5 JoB?!?!?), walked down to

Neonopolis shopping mall-heard alot about it, wanted to

see it…great location, great building, but nothing there-

no reason to go here, except for the giant video arcade

for kids….hope this place makes it, but doesn’t seem

like it was planned very well…went back to Las Vegas

Club, played BJ for an hour, lost $50…back to Fitz,

saw Wild Billy Tucker (he’s no longer there), well worth

the $5 admission…lost my 6-team teaser, hit 4 out of 6,

lost $20…dropped another $20 at VP…back to 4 Queens

for dinner….limited menu at Magnolias, but good food…

played win for life slots, lost $20, VP, won $20…back to

Fitz, played wheel of fortune, lost $20 (the usual!), played

BJ for 1 hr, broke even, played VP, won $30, called it

a night, down $120 for the day.

Day 10: vacations over, lost about $1450 on the trip-so,

almost worst case scenario, and it wound up costing me

what a 10-day vacation anyplace else would’ve cost-and

I still had a great time!! Can’t wait to get back (coming

back Sep 1-6, great deal at Vegas Club-$198 for the

5-nite holiday weekend!!…. Flying out of Atlantic City,

$100 cheaper than Newark-and parking’s affordable-

could’ve gotten same price out of Philly, but have to take

3 trains to get there!!)…Oh well, have early flight

back to Newark-now THAT”S a depressing thought!!!!!

Hope this isn’t too long to print!!

Recent Vegas Trip

Las Vegas 3/6/05-3/11/05

Stayed at the Rio because we received an unbelievable deal for the Sunday

Thru Thursday. Averaged $52.00 including tax per night for a suite. Can’t beat

that. We would have never stayed there again because they don’t care about $10

bettors at the tables if you can even find any? Never expect any comps playing

table games for $10 or quarter slots from Harrah’s. But for the price we paid

for the room we figured we have already been comped.

Suite located in Masquerade Tower, older but still very nice. No coffee

makers in room. When I called up and requested one, there were none available

unless you are a Diamond Harrah’s club member. We are only Gold, so that meant no

coffee in our room. View wasn’t that good either but what can you do?

Great room horrible casino. No full pay VP machines anywhere and I spent a

lot of time looking. Slots very tight and table limits very high for week

nights. Needless to say, we did not spend a lot of time there gambling. Went to Gold

Coast next door, lots of full pay VP and always $5 tables available. Slots a

little tight there too.

Palms had very few full pay VP and table limits were lower than the Rio. The

Gold Coast is a very nice casino but no LET IT RIDE there. Ate at the Gold

Coast coffee shop a couple of times and it’s always good there and great value!

Had very good Sushi at the Rio and ate at Buzzio’s one night for dinner and

it was very good! Very good value as well for what you got.

We rented a car this trip and drove out to Bonnie Springs, Old Las Vegas.

Nice scenery but had to sit through a very corny lame show there. Not worth the

trip to go there though the drive to get there was very nice.

Saw the following shows:

3/6- Scintas at the Rio. My wife liked it better than me. Very much a family

show, good for the kids. I was bored.

3/7- Zumanity at NY/NY. Spent $125.00 for duo couch on side of stage. The

best right? Not even close. Do not sit anywhere near that stage, we had limited

visibility and had to deal with a couple of actors going through the audience.

We both were undecided if we liked it or hated it? I wouldn’t recommend it

that’s for sure.

3/8- Justin Tranz at the Sahara. We really liked this show. The tickets

included a free buffet and we were prepared for the usual Sahara lame buffet but it

was OK, especially when you don’t have to pay for it. Sign up for the slot

club at the Sahara and get a buy one get one free for this show and $10.00 in

slots credits. Excellent deal. Justin Tranz is a very funny and good show.

3/9- Celine Dion at Caesars. Sat in second mezzanine due to cost of show.

Seats are OK up there. Good visibility and sound was excellent. What can I say,

She’s Celine. Very good show and very entertaining, this coming from a non fan

but the wife loves her. She is a must see.

We took a helicopter tour of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and landed inside the

Grand Canyon for a picnic lunch. Booked through Look tours and we used Sundance

Helicopter. Excellent time and great pilot, Dave. Yes, it was a lot of $ but

it’s a once in a lifetime trip. We both loved it.

We hopefully will be back in October, not sure where we will be staying but

will give everyone a report when we get back. I read all the reports posted and

find them very helpful in deciding where to go or not to go. I hope our

report helps everyone as well.

Trip tidbits

Hi Mr. Vegas,

I’ve been to Vegas a zillion times, twice this year so far, and enjoy your

newsletter very much.

Excalibur Problem: No cell phone signals in the casino, and intermittant

weak signals from the room. We had to go outside to use our cell phones. Some

people might not care, but this was a major inconvenience for us. We won’t stay

there again just for this reason. Plus, the buffet was pathetic.

Main Street Station: The antiques were a delight, and worth going to see.

The antiques are not just the old lamp or bowl, but giant archetechural

structures like brass doors and chandeliers and entire train cars. Main Street

Station is a breath of fresh air downtown. Unlike some of the other downtown

casinos, it does not smell like urine. It is not one of the “station” casinos, but

is a Boyd property, and there is are shuttles to Stardust and Sam’s Town. We

ate at the Brewery which was good.

I love the neon museum, and the museums in Tropicana and Neonopolis.

Green Valley Ranch was fun and the buffet was excellent. It’s worth the trip

just to go look at the pool.

The end. Wishing everyone big wins.

re: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas: Issue # 494

regarding “Choice” beef.

I thought I could give a slightly better explaination then the sidebar in a

wedding book.

There are three grades of beef. Select, Choice, and Prime.

Prime is EXPENSIVE!!!!!. Delmonico’s, Galaghers, and places of that ilk serve

it, and you pay $30+ for a steak. It’s got the most marbling (thin veins of

fat in the meat which contribute to tenderness and flavor).

Select is sold usually as “stew meat”. regardless of what cut it’s from, it’s

not real good as steak in most cases.

Choice is everything else. Most steaks you have at most places (or buy in

supermarkets) are choice. A good, dependable, and not terribly expensive meat.

An odd thing to come out of this naming convention is this: Back in the day,

“Prime Rib” meant a rib roast that contains Prime meat. Nowadays any rib roast

is called “Prime Rib”, regardless of the meat specifications, when it should

really be called “Rib Roast.”

Love the newsletter! keep up the good work!

RE: [Everythinglasvegas] Everything Las Vegas: Issue # 494

Hi Steve,

FYI and all newsletter members:

Just called the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino in Vegas and spoke with someone at

Mr. Lucky’s Restaurant (open 24 hours) They still have the Special of Steak

and Shrimp dinner for $7.77, all day. IT IS NOT ON THE MENU. YOU HAVE TO ASK

FOR IT!!

They used to offer three entrees to choose from for their Twilight Specials,

served before 7:00 p.m. Now they only have the Steak & Shrimp special, any

time of the day, but you have to request it, as it is not on the menu. Last

October when we were there, our waitress told us there were no specials. Their

food is very good and we always looked forward to our dinner at Mr. Lucky’s in

the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino. We’re going to Vegas in May, so we are looking

forward to going to the Hard Rock one night to enjoy a great dinner at a very

reasonable price, relaxing in a casual setting.

Thank you for all your helpful tips and I’m glad to have a place to pass this

on to other Vegas vacationers. Enjoy!

Comps

Have been to Vegas several times and am starting to

learn my way around. My favorite city, bar none. And

I appreciate your newsletter. Great help for

everyone. One thing I can’t figure out is how to get

comped. My bride and I stayed at the Golden Nugget

last time and I had over 2,000 points on my card in

one day, not counting the Black Jack I played. I went

to the players club cage and asked about if I had any

comps coming. I thought they were going to laugh at

me. I am no big player by any means; I usually play

$15-$25 black Jack and .25 and $1 max play video

poker. Maybe your members can help out. I won’t be

offended by any answers, I just would like to know.

Thanks for all you do for us who love Vegas.
